FEBRUARY They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. ACTS 2:42 (NIV)

MARCH Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. ACTS 2:46-47 (NIV)

APRIL Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. ACTS 4:12 (NIV)

So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them… ACTS 6:2-3 (NIV)

FOREWORD BY S E N I O R PA S TO R S

As we lead Covenant EFC towards Vision 2028 and our 50th Jubilee Anniversary, God has given us Acts 20:28 as our spiritual anchor:

“PAY CAREFUL ATTENTION

to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.” As church leaders and members, we are to pay careful attention to our hearts’ condition and to our triune God. At last year’s Listening Retreat, God impressed a spiritual burden upon us for 2018: WE ARE CHURCH: PRAY AND REPENT! We are CHURCH We believe God has called us to be One Church with Multiple Centres and pursue the A.D.I.D. of A Certain Kind within each local centre through small groups. We will enhance the small group strategy so that we can make disciples who make disciples. This year, we were led to preach on the book of Acts, as we rediscover what the Church is all about. We Are Church: PRAY! I (Rev Tan Kay Kiong) received a distinct picture of Moses praying in the mountain with his hands supported by Aaron and Hur. As I read the account in Exodus 17, the burden was clear:

1. We Are Under Attack (Exo 17:8) Many of us are living defeated lives stained by sin and the affairs of this world. The devil has launched his arsenal of attacks against every possible area of our lives. 2. We Must Fight with the Weapons of God (Exo 17:9b) The staff in Moses’ hand was the staff of God. Formerly used to goad sheep, this once ordinary staff became God’s weapon to fight spiritual battles. We must put on God’s spiritual armour so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes. 3. We Must Fight with the Weapons of God and Hold Up Our Hands (Exo 17:11a) Joshua and his troops were fighting with all their might against the enemies, but the secret to their victory was Moses’ hands raised to God in desperate intercession. Aaron and Hur helped Moses keep his hands up. We must hold up our hands in intercession for spiritual victory in our lives. We Are Church: Pray and REPENT! There is no true prayer without REPENTANCE. “Bring forth fruits in keeping with repentance.” − Luke 3:8. God spoke to me (Rev Tony Yeo) through the book of Joel: 1. Repent humbly – put on sackcloth, wail before the altar, declare a holy fast and call a sacred assembly (Joel 1:13-14). 2. Repent wholeheartedly – rend your heart and not your garments (Joel 2:12-13). Return to God with all our hearts for He is gracious and compassionate! 3. Repent urgently – in the light of the day of the Lord and His coming judgement (Joel 3:3-14). We believe that God will speak to each of you personally as you spend daily devotional time with the Lord in His Word and in prayer. This Devotional Journal (DJ) has been designed to help you in this. We pray and trust that God will greatly bless you as you use this DJ daily, and His Spirit will guide and direct your prayers such that God will be pleased to answer them and display His glory in you and in our church for the advance of His Kingdom in Singapore and beyond. In Christ, Rev Tony Yeo and Rev Tan Kay Kiong

GUIDE TO USING THIS

DEVOTIONAL JOURNAL

1

Prepare your heart in God’s presence

■ Select a fixed time (preferably in the morning before you begin your day) and a quiet place where you can be alone and undisturbed. ■ Observe a moment of silence as you acknowledge God’s presence. Centre down. ■ Begin with a song of worship. Meditate on the lyrics even if you are unfamiliar with the tune. (Refer to the list of worship songs provided.) ■ Ask God to open your heart to hear Him.

SOMETHING TO PONDER... Examining your life is essential in your faith journey. Your redeemed life as a disciple of Christ deserves careful examining. May you take root and bear fruit in Him!

The English Standard Version (ESV) is the default Bible version translation unless otherwise specified.

Allow God to S.O.A.P. you

with His Word and Spirit

■ Scripture – Take your time to meditate on the Scripture passage for the day. Pause and mull over words and phrases that stand out to you. ■ Observation – Jot down significant insights and reflections from the passage you have read. You may use the guiding questions provided. The “Deeper Reflection” section is to aid your contemplation of the Scripture. It is not to replace your own observation, for the Holy Spirit illuminates the Scripture to you as you seek Him earnestly. ■ Application – Note down a specific and practical commitment to God’s Word for you. Is there a command to obey, a sin to avoid, an example to follow, or a principle to live out? Where appropriate, share your devotional entry with someone. ■ Prayer – Bring your heartfelt response to God in prayer.

P R AY E R P O I N T E R S F O R 2 0 1 8 Prayer pointers for Pastors and Staff are included every Tuesday. On each Friday, there is a prayer pointer for Lay Leaders (e.g. Zone Mentors, CG Leaders, Assistant CG Leaders and Ministry Leaders). A prayer pointer for Church Board Members is included every Saturday. Please pray for each group as well as any specific individuals whom God may bring to your mind.

Acts 20:18-21, 25-27

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about Paul’s disciplemaking ministry through his twice-repeated statement, “How I did not shrink from declaring to you” in verses 20 to 21, and 25 to 27?

Deeper Reflection PAUL’S FAREWELL ADDRESS to the Ephesian church leaders (Acts 20:18-35) – “elders” (Acts 20:17), “overseers” and “shepherds” (Acts 20:28) was a “pastoral testament” with a “pastoral spirit”1. Paul was concerned with more than evangelism, he sought healthy churches, and leaders are key to realising that goal.2 Any form of leadership in the church is pastoral in nature one way or another, including, at the lowest denominator, one believer nurturing one younger believer. We must have the sense of responsibility marked by “how I did not shrink from declaring to you” (vv.20, 27). Paul fulfilled his responsibility such that he could say “I am innocent of the blood of any of you” (v.26, NIV; cf. Eze 33:1-6). To be responsible in this way, our pastoral ministry, like Paul’s, must be Word-centred and truth-imparting, which is comprehensive in its contents, covering “anything that would be helpful” (v.20, NIV) and “the whole will of God” (v.27) – “all that God wants you to know” (NLT) as found in the Scriptures. But we can never know and grasp the Scriptures exhaustively. Nonetheless, we are to keep growing in knowing and following God’s Word, walking a few steps ahead of those whom we lead.

Be on Guard!

S CRIPTURE

Acts 20:28-31

O BSERVATION How did Paul underscore the importance of spiritual alertness and watchfulness?

Deeper Reflection THE CHURCH OF GOD must always be spiritually “on guard” and “on the alert” for individual believers and leaders shepherding “all the flock” (vv.28, 31). For Paul, the greatest spiritual danger is deception through false teachers who “distort the truth”, coming from both outside and inside the church (vv.29, 30). Paul expected this to happen: “I know” (v.29). Do we? It is only when we expect it that we will be alert to it. False teachings are counterfeits of the truth. They look alike to the truth. We can detect and discern the counterfeits only when we know what is true. Ignorance of the truth and weak biblical foundation make easy prey to counterfeit “biblical” teachings. Paul watched over “all” his flock in his three years at Ephesus by teaching and warning them personally – “each one” − and intensively – “night and day…I did not cease” (v.31). “All” the flock under a leader implies that “each individual member under our charge must be taken heed of and watched over…it is necessary that we should know each person that belongs to our charge. For how can we take heed of them if we do not know them? We must labour to be acquainted with the state of all our people as fully as possible”3.

A Certain Kind

S CRIPTURE

Acts 20:22-24

O BSERVATION What characterised Paul as a follower and servant of the Lord?

Deeper Reflection WOULD WE EMBRACE a life of “not knowing what will happen to me”, but certain that “imprisonment and tribulations await me” (vv.22-23)? Paul embraced such a life: “I am on my way to Jerusalem” (v.22). Paul followed His Master’s footsteps: “When the days were approaching for His ascension, He set His face to go to Jerusalem” for the cross (Lk 9:51). Paul is a model of a disciple of A Certain Kind: a Christ-mastered life. It is a life “bound by the Spirit”, taken captive by the Spirit and under divine constraint. Paul was passively “bound by the Spirit”, but he could still actively choose not to go to Jerusalem. A Christ-mastered life is one that aims to finish the race and complete the task “which I received from the Lord Jesus” (v.24). The main obstacle to this lies in “my life”, when I am concerned about my significance, security, comfort and future. Paul considered his life “worth nothing” to him (v.24). This means following and serving the Lord faithfully wherever it may take us. It could be lifethreatening and infinitely costly. We don’t need to be certain where we are going or what we shall face. We are entirely expendable to God. Our overriding goal is not to live long, but to live well.

FAMILY DEVOTIONAL WEEK 1 NOVEMBER 2018

HOW CAN I LOVE OTHERS? We love others because Jesus loves us. Scripture: John 15:12-13 ACTIVITY BITE Cut out the front or back of a cereal box, leaving a 3cm border. Write “Now Showing: Love to” on the top of the frame. Cut round holes along the sides of the box and partially insert balledup tissue paper in them to imitate light bulbs. Put a photo or a piece of paper with the name of a person you want to show love to in the frame. CHAT TIME Q1: Can you think of a Bible story in which Jesus demonstrated how He loved His friends? Q2: Have you ever given up something because you cared for someone? Share this experience. Q3: Name two sacrifices that your parents or teachers did today to show their love for you. LEARNING POINT Love didn’t start with us. We love because God loves us. We can pass on the love of Jesus when we give up our lives for others. That doesn’t always have to be big or complicated. It can mean paying attention to what others need and giving up something to help them. It might just be a few minutes of your time or some encouraging words. If it sounds difficult, we can always ask God for help because He can give us the power to love others the way we should. We can love others like how God loves us, as in verses 12 and 13. ACTION POINT Think of a friend who needs help and how you are willing to do something you don’t normally do to help him or her. Share your plan with your parents. FAMILY PRAYER POINTS Thank God for His love and ask Him to help us show His love to others. Pray for the strength, courage and wisdom to make wise and loving choices.

God’s Great Love For Us

S CRIPTURE

Ephesians 2:1-10

O BSERVATION What is the extent of God’s love shown to us?

Deeper Reflection THE APOSTLE PAUL described and explained God’s great love for sinners. God was willing to go all the way and bear the full costs to save disobedient and rebellious people from His divine wrath and righteous judgement. He was prepared to even pay the ultimate price – the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, dying on the cross for the sins of humanity in exchange for the lives of men, women and children who would believe in Christ for salvation. Why was God willing to do that? The reasons are God’s mercy and love: “being rich in mercy”, “because of the great love with which He loved us” (v.4). Why does Paul say God’s mercy is rich and His love great? All of humanity are sinners, born with a sinful nature and therefore we all sin in all kinds of ways. We are dead in our trespasses and sins (v.1), living in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind (v.3). We have no sensitivity to God, no desire to seek Him and His righteousness. Our behaviour and actions are driven by all that our bodies crave for and our minds covet (v.3). We are “by nature, children of wrath” (v.3), destined for destruction as deserved. We have nothing in ourselves to merit God’s love. Our total unworthiness stands in stark contrast with the “the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (v.7). Believers have been saved by God’s grace – unmerited favour! God who is merciful chose us in love for salvation through faith in Christ and for a fruitful life in Christ!

Who Does Good Works? (1)

S CRIPTURE

Titus 1:15-16; Luke 6:43-46

O BSERVATION What is the relationship between knowing God and doing good works?

Deeper Reflection DOING GOOD WORKS is the outward expression of being God’s people. It is the embodiment by God’s people of God’s character of mercy, grace, patience, steadfast love and faithfulness (see Exo 34:6; Neh 9:17; Psa 86:15; 103:8; 145:8; Joel 2:13). No person can have a relationship with God and at the same time live a life devoid of good works. If one knows God, one will invariably do good works. The life of God is in that person and it will be evident in his or her deeds and actions. In other words, good works are the vital evidence of a relationship with God. Conversely, bad works or evil deeds are compelling evidence of their practitioners not having a relationship with God: “They profess to know God, but they deny Him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work” (v.16). Good works are done by those people who take care to keep themselves from being defiled in their minds and consciences. They constantly feed their minds with things that are pure and good, and as a result they constantly think about and desire what is good. They will then act on that and do various good works. On the other hand, those people who constantly allow their minds and consciences to be defiled by all kinds of sins, perversions and evil, will constantly think about and desire what is evil. They will then go on to speak and do evil in all its forms. They are incapable of doing any good work.

Who Does Good Works? (2)

S CRIPTURE

2 Timothy 2:20-26

O BSERVATION How can we be ready for every good work?

Deeper Reflection A VESSEL CAN BE A CONTAINER like a jar or a pot. Figuratively, a vessel can also refer to an instrument. A vessel can be made from various materials, such as gold, silver, wood and clay. However, what a vessel is used for doesn’t depend only on the material from which it is made; it also depends on whether the vessel is clean. For example, if a jar is clean, it can be used to contain drinking water, or if a pot is clean, it can be used to cook food. On the other hand, if a container is not clean, then it may be used to contain waste matter. The apostle Paul likens a Christian disciple to a vessel. If disciples cleanse their hearts from dishonourable things, they will have pure hearts and be good and faithful servants of the Lord Jesus. They will be vessels “for honourable use, set apart as holy, useful to the [Master], ready for every good work” (v.21). The dishonourable things that need to be purged from our hearts include sexual immorality arising from youthful passions, as well as divisive quarrels arising from foolish, ignorant controversies (vv.22-23). The honourable things that we should fill our hearts with include righteousness, faith, love, peace, kindness, patience and gentleness (vv.22, 24-25). If we desire to be useful vessels for God’s redemptive purpose for humankind, then let us regularly make efforts to examine our hearts, confess our sins and repent of them. On the basis of Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross for our sins, let us ask the Lord for forgiveness and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 Jn 1:9).

Doing Good at Home and at Work

S CRIPTURE

Titus 2:1-14

O BSERVATION What good works should Christians do in their homes and workplaces?

Deeper Reflection WE ARE OFTEN PRESENTED the dichotomy between “being” and “doing”. Well-meaning Christians sometimes tell us, “God is more interested in your being than in your doing”, as though what we are is more important than what we do. That is true in some sense, but it is also false. Why false? It suggests that what we are is wholly unconnected with what we do. The truth is “being” and “doing” are two concepts that cannot be separated. The apostle Paul seemed to understand this. He wrote a letter to Titus, a foremost church leader in Crete, appointed by Paul himself to put things in order within the church. From Paul’s instructions and counsel to Titus, we can see clearly that being a godly person is intimately connected to doing good works. In verses 7 to 8, Paul instructs Titus, “Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.” The general principle is: In all respects, Titus was to show himself to be a model of good works. The particular principle is: In his teaching, Titus was to show himself to be a model of integrity, dignity and sound speech. So for us, isn’t it clear that by developing and displaying godly character and conduct in our homes and workplaces, we are doing good works? The converse is also true: By doing good works in our homes and workplaces, we are developing and displaying godly character and conduct.

Doing Good in Our Community

S CRIPTURE

Titus 3:1-14

O BSERVATION Why does the apostle Paul emphasise the need for the Christians “to devote themselves to good works” (vv.8, 14)?

Deeper Reflection BEING DEVOTED TO GOOD WORKS has the same idea as being “zealous for good works” (Tit 2:14) and “ready for every good work” (v.1). It means that one is passionate for and perseveres in doing good works. But what is the reason we are called by God to do good works? Certainly, we are not saved by doing good works. This is made very clear by Paul in verses 4 to 7. God saved us “not because of works done by us in righteousness” (v.5). Rather, God saved us “according to His own mercy” (v.5) and we are “justified by His grace” (v.7) in Christ Jesus. Then why are Christians called to do good works and to do so with passion and perseverance? The reason is that when Christians are not side-tracked by worthless distractions (vv.2-3, 9), but are focused on doing good works, people will be blessed (“profitable for people”, v.8). When we do good works in the community, many people’s felt needs are met and they are much blessed. However, the greatest blessing we can give to people is to share with them the good news of Jesus Christ, so that they will have an opportunity to believe in Christ and receive the hope of eternal life through faith in Christ. The ultimate good work is proclaiming the Gospel to unbelievers! Brothers and sisters, let us align ourselves with God’s will for us to be fruitful in our lives and not be fruitless. In doing good works, let us be prayerful and led by the Holy Spirit, so as to be wise in our decisions and give priority to urgent cases.

Serve the Poor and Needy in Society

S CRIPTURE

Luke 4:16-21; 24:44-49

O BSERVATION Who are “the poor”, “the captives”, “the blind” and “those who are oppressed” (v.18)?

Deeper Reflection ALL BELIEVERS ARE GOD’S AGENTS to carry out His mission in the world. God’s revealed will is for the repentance and forgiveness of sins to be proclaimed in Christ’s name to all nations (Lk 24:45-47). Just as Jesus was anointed by the Holy Spirit to do the work of the Father, so too are all Christian disciples to be anointed by God’s Spirit (“clothed with power from on high”, Lk 24:49) for God’s work. What Jesus began to do and teach in His ministry while on earth, the Church is to continue doing and teaching faithfully until His return (Acts 1:1-5; Matt 28:18-20). When we read the Gospel accounts, we see that Jesus had a special place in His heart for the despised, marginalised and downtrodden in society. However, while Jesus met their physical needs (e.g. for healing, deliverance), He also clearly saw their spiritual need (e.g. Lk 5:17-25). That is why He was focused on preaching the good news. When we serve the poor and needy in society, it involves meeting their physical needs. However, we must not forget that people’s deepest need is a spiritual one – forgiveness of sins and reconciliation to God. The poor need to know the riches of God’s mercy and grace. The captives need to be set free from slavery to sin. The blind need to see the reality of their pride and rebellion against God. The oppressed need to be delivered from the burdens of their guilt and shame. In truth, every person is poor and needy, whatever one’s status in society. Every person’s hope of salvation and eternal blessing is found only in one person — Jesus Christ!

SHOULD I COMFORT THOSE WHO ARE HURTING? Jesus will comfort those who are hurting. So can I. Scripture: Mark 4:35-41 ACTIVITY BITE Retell the story in verses 35 to 41 with sound effects. Crush a sheet of foil for rain, pop paper bags for thunder, blow into empty cups for wind, and splash water in a bucket for the sound of waves. Be creative in making other sounds! CHAT TIME Q1: When Jesus was woken up by his disciples who were afraid, what was the first thing He did? Q2: What are some “life’s storms” that your friends are experiencing which make them afraid or upset? Q3: In Matthew 22:37-39, how does God want us to help our friends who are hurting? LEARNING POINT The God who stopped that wild storm instantly is the same God at work in our lives and the lives of the people we meet. When people are afraid, sad or hurting, God wants to comfort them in the middle of their “storms” just like how He comforts us, and He can use us to comfort others too. Even when we cannot stop what is happening, we can comfort our friends by spending time with them and reminding them that God loves them. ACTION POINT Name a friend who is going through “life’s storms” and may be feeling hurt, scared, upset, sad, angry, disillusion or at a loss. Think of how you can bring God’s peace, power and comfort to him or her and act on it this week. FAMILY PRAYER POINTS Praise God that He is more powerful than anything, including the storms in our lives and the lives of those around us. Did the Holy Spirit Contradict Himself?

S CRIPTURE

Acts 20:22-23; 21:1-6; 1 Corinthians 14:29

O BSERVATION How do you explain the apparent contradiction between what Paul (vv.22-23) and the believers at Tyre (Acts 21:4) heard from the Holy Spirit concerning Paul going to Jerusalem?

Deeper Reflection PAUL WAS “BOUND BY THE SPIRIT” to go to Jerusalem (v.22). But the believers at Tyre “kept telling Paul through the Spirit” – through the operation of a prophetic gift4 – “not to set foot in Jerusalem” (Acts 21:4). This seemed to contradict what Paul had heard from the Holy Spirit. It could be that the Tyrian believers received from the Spirit a prophecy that Paul would have trouble in Jerusalem, but they inferred from this that the Spirit was prompting him not to go to Jerusalem.5 Paul heard the warning and received it as a revelatory word, yet without doubting that it was an utterance of the Spirit, he concluded in his assessment that this did not invalidate the Spirit’s earlier revelation that he must go to Jerusalem.6 In the church, when a prophet gives a prophetic word, the church must “pass judgment” (1 Cor 14:29, NASB). The prophetic word is to be judged as to the meaning of the prophecy and its significance for specific behaviour or situation. Paul seemed to discern that the prophecy “don’t go to Jerusalem” was the Tyrian church’s concern for his well-being out of a Spirit-given love, which is no less of the Spirit than the Spirit-inspired prophetic utterance.

Divine Will and Human Wish in Tension

S CRIPTURE

Acts 21:7-14

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about the divine will and the human wish in verses 7 to 14?

Deeper Reflection FROM TYRE Paul went to Caesarea (vv.7-8). In a Christian gathering at Caesarea, the prophet Agabus spoke the word of the Spirit, that Paul would be “bound” by the Jews in Jerusalem and “deliver” him to the Gentiles (v.11). The word “bound” is the same word used in “bound by the Spirit” in the same context (Acts 20:22). Here is a lesson on perspective: To see our being “bound” by sufferings as being “bound by the Spirit”, and “bound by the Spirit” is sovereign over “bound” by sufferings. The word of the Spirit, expressing the divine will, was met with the human wish. The Christian community “began begging” Paul “not to go up to Jerusalem” (v.12). Paul meant a lot to them, and they treasured the precious relationship with him, just like the Ephesian church leaders grieving and weeping, knowing that they would not see his face again (Acts 20:37-38). We see here a tension between the divine will and the human wish. What if Paul yielded to the human wish and disobeyed God’s will? Luke did not have this hypothetical question in mind. He just narrated the real painful human feelings in a loving relationship in Christ, and ended with “The will of the Lord be done!” (v.14).

To Die for the Name of Jesus

S CRIPTURE

Acts 21:12-13; Philippians 1:18-24

O BSERVATION What significant observations can you make about how Paul looked at life and death?

Deeper Reflection WE DO HEAR OF CHRISTIANS responding, rather thoughtlessly, to the mention of death with “Reject that in Jesus’ name!” This reflects an anthropocentric mindset, in great contrast to Paul’s Christocentric posture: “I am ready… to die for the name of the Lord Jesus” (v.13). Mark the word “ready”. When I turned 40, I began to think of my own death, because I had already lived half, and possibly more than half, of my life. My life was nearer to death than before. I reflected on how Paul looked at his death in Philippians. My conclusion was: Living or dying is secondary. What is primary is Christ: To live “is Christ” (Phil 1:21) and to die is to be “with Christ” (Phil 1:23). In his Christ-centredness, Paul viewed death as “gain” and “very much better” than living, and death was his “desire” (Phil 1:21, 23). Paul’s central concern was Christ “be exalted in my body, whether I live or die” (Phil 1:20). We reject death because we want to live. But why do we want to live? Is it “for the name of the Lord Jesus”? Or do we fear to die because to us death is the end of everything good? This is worldly self-love, which turns life into an idol.8 Am I ready to die or fearful to die? It depends on whether we are Christ-centred or not.

Paul’s Mission to the Gentiles: Glorification of God

S CRIPTURE

Acts 21:15-20; 14:26-27; 15:4, 12

O BSERVATION What is a repeated idea found in Paul’s ministry in Acts 14:27, Acts 15:4, 12 and verse 19?

Deeper Reflection FROM CAESAREA Paul went to Jerusalem, where he met with the church leaders (vv.15-18). He reported to them his ministry among the Gentiles (vv.19-20) – from which we can learn two theocentric ministry principles. How do we see our ministry? When Paul and Barnabas returned to Antioch from the work the church had sent them to, they reported “all things that God had done with them” (Acts 14:27). When they went to Jerusalem to resolve some critical theological issues, they reported to the church there “all that God had done with them” (Acts 15:4) and the “signs and wonders God had done through them” (Acts 15:12). Now in Jerusalem again, Paul related “one by one the things which God had done among the Gentiles through his ministry” (v.19). “God had done”: The work of God is the work of God. But we have the privilege of being partners with God – “what God had done with them” (Acts 14:27; Acts 15:4), and channels of God – “what God had done through them” (Acts 15:12; v.19). Our ministry is only and always “by the grace of God” (1 Cor 15:9-10; Eph 3:7-8). What do we seek in our ministry? The glory of God! What “God had done” (v.19) results in “glorifying God” (v.20a).

Paul and Fellow Jewish Believers: Accommodation for Unity

S CRIPTURE

Acts 21:20-26

O BSERVATION What did Paul’s action in verses 20 to 26 tell us about him?

Deeper Reflection JEWISH BELIEVERS in Jerusalem who “followed the Law of Moses very seriously” (v.20, NLT) believed the rumours that Paul taught the Diaspora Jews to reject the Law of Moses, not to circumcise their children or follow other Jewish customs (v.21). Thus, they were antagonistic towards Paul. It was Paul’s principle to be a Jew to the Jews for the sake of the Gospel (1 Cor 9:20) by observing certain Mosaic laws and Jewish customs without compromising the Gospel that salvation is by grace through faith and not by keeping the Law (Acts 15:1-2, 5, 7-11). The Jerusalem Jewish believers’ misperception of Paul formed their misgivings towards the Gentile believers, because Paul was an apostle to the Gentiles (Rom 11:13). Hence, what was at stake here was the unity of the church, consisting of Jews and Gentiles. Paul was advised to observe certain ritual laws to prove to these Jewish believers that the rumours about him were all false (vv.22-24). With sensitivity and humility, Paul did it for the sake of the unity of the church. Non-essential things that are permissible for us may trouble or stumble weaker believers. But we should seek to build them up by accommodating them in love (Rom 14:13-15).

Paul and the Antagonistic Jews: Submission to Suffering

S CRIPTURE

Acts 21:26-36

O BSERVATION How was the sovereignty of God seen in the opposition Paul faced from the Jews (vv. 26-33)?

Deeper Reflection JUST AS PAUL was observing certain ritual laws to seek conciliation with the strict Jewish Christians from Jerusalem for the unity of the church (vv.26-27a), opposition against him was started by “the Jews from Asia”, who “had probably come to Jerusalem as pilgrims on Pentecost”.10 Paul was accused of attacking “the fundamental symbols of Jewish national solidarity – the people, the law and the temple”11 (vv.27-28). Paul was overwhelmingly attacked by “all the city” (v.30a). The opposition was violent: the Jews “rushed” upon him, “dragged him out of the temple”, and beat him, seeking “to kill him” (vv.30-32). On Paul’s part, there was total submission to the affliction; for it was according to his expectation to suffer in Jerusalem “for the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 20:22-24; 21:11-14). But in the nick of time, “while they were seeking to kill him”, intervention came from the Roman commander (vv.32-33). God was there and was sovereign over the whole situation, although He is absent in the text. Paul could say – and we, too, − “God is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not fear” (Psa 27:1, 3).

SHOULD I GIVE TO THOSE WHO ARE IN NEED? Jesus gives to those who are in need. So can I. Scripture: Mark 6:30-44 ACTIVITY BITE Write thank you cards to people who need to be noticed: police officers, firefighters, hospital staff, Church staff who work on Sundays and even parents. You can also create Special Awesome Parent Award cards for new parents. Think of others whom you can add to the list! CHAT TIME Q1: Need is different from want. Name some items that fall under both categories. Q2: God knows and can meet our needs even when we don’t tell anyone. What is your greatest need right now? Q3: What are some things that prevent you from seeing the needs of others? LEARNING POINT Jesus showed His love for each person by providing for their needs. Jesus told His disciples to give the people something to eat – this is still the job of those who follow Jesus. He can use us to meet the needs of people around us. This might be using our time, words or allowance. When we look around, there is always someone with a need. So, be ready and willing for God to use whatever we have to help them. ACTION POINT Explore with your parents how you can serve those who are in need as a family. Provide hope by visiting an elderly neighbour or provide food by volunteering at soup kitchens. You can also call the Community Centres to find volunteer opportunities. FAMILY PRAYER POINTS Thank God that He meets our needs because He loves us. Pray for help to show others how much God loves them by giving them what they need.

Has the Holy Spirit Disappeared?

S CRIPTURE

Acts 1:8; 21:7-17

O BSERVATION What is the significance of the Holy Spirit being mentioned in nearly every chapter in Acts 1 to 21 but only once in Acts 22 to 28 (Acts 28:25) in the light of verse 8?

Deeper Reflection THE STORY OF ACTS is the fulfilment of Jesus’ missional purpose for His church: to be His Spirit-empowered witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the ends of the earth – the Gentiles (v.8). The Holy Spirit was the main actor in the story, being specifically mentioned 57 times. But, He is mentioned in nearly every chapter only until chapter 21. The Holy Spirit is kind of absent and silent in the last seven chapters of Acts. Has He disappeared? How are we to understand this sudden absence and silence of the Holy Spirit in the light of verse 8? The last mention of the Holy Spirit in Acts 1 to 21 is “what the Holy Spirit says” concerning Paul that he would be bound by the Jews in Jerusalem and delivered to the Gentiles (Acts 21:11). This would be fulfilled in Acts 21:15-28:31, with Paul imprisoned in Rome (Acts 28:30-31). From Rome the Gospel would reach Spain – the furthest end of Western Europe (Rom 15:23-28). This would be a further fulfilment of verse 8. In His quiet ways in Acts 21:15 to 28:31 the Holy Spirit was no less present and powerfully active than in the many spectacular ways in Acts 1:1 to 21:14. And Paul was no less filled with and empowered by the Holy Spirit in the last quarter of Acts.

Two Most Fundamental Discipleship Questions

S CRIPTURE

Acts 21:31-40, 22:1-10

O BSERVATION In what ways can Paul’s two questions to Jesus (Acts 22:8, 10) in his encounter with the Lord function as fundamental questions in discipleship?

Deeper Reflection HAVING BEEN RESCUED by the Roman commander from being killed by the hostile Jews (vv.31-36), Paul asked for permission to speak to them (vv.37-40). Paul spoke of how when he was on his way to Damascus to arrest the disciples of Jesus, Jesus appeared to him in a very bright light (vv.1-7). In this encounter, Paul asked Jesus two questions: “Who are You, Lord?” (v.8) and “What shall I do, Lord?” (v.10). These are two most fundamental discipleship questions. “Who are You, Lord?” is a question of knowing the Lord, and “What shall I do, Lord?” is a question of following the Lord. Knowing and following the Lord ought to be the central purpose of our lives. Paul addressed Jesus as “Lord”. Addressing Jesus as “Lord” presupposes our allegiance to His lordship, otherwise it is hollow of truth (cf. Matt 7:21). The order of the two questions – “Who are You, Lord?” preceding “What shall I do, Lord?” – is of great importance. For Paul, knowing “Jesus Christ is Lord” objectively (Phil 2:11) leads to following Jesus subjectively as “Christ Jesus my Lord” (Phil 3:8). While knowing the Lord is foundational to following Him, following Him increases our knowing Him.

God’s Story of My Life

S CRIPTURE

Acts 22:1-16; Galatians 1:15

O BSERVATION How does Paul’s personal testimony before the hostile Jews present an outline of how God writes His story of our lives?

Deeper Reflection PAUL MADE HIS “DEFENCE” to the hostile Jews (v.1) by telling God’s story of his life (vv. 3-16). Each of our lives is a unique story that God is writing. That story began with God foreknew you. Paul saw that God “had set me apart even from my mother’s womb” (Gal 1:15; cf. Jer 1:5). It means “You saw me before I was born…Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed” (Psa 139:16, NLT). What we are and how long we live are predetermined – constraints which environmental factors and personal decision-making cannot evade.14 But this does not mean we have no responsibility in how we live our lives (1 Cor 4:1-5; 2 Cor 5:9-10). Paul talked about his preconversion life, particularly his persecution of the Church (vv.3-5). Your pre-conversion life, whatever it was, was without God. Yet God was with you, in that God pursued you until you reached your “Road to Damascus” where God saved you (vv.6-7). What follows is God appointed you. God “has appointed you to know His will” (v.14) and “all that has been appointed for you to do” (v.10). What God has “appointed for you” includes everything that happens to you, good and bad. And God has not finished His story.

God Knows Better Than Us

S CRIPTURE

Acts 22:17-21

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about God in His dialogue with Paul in verses 17 to 21?

Deeper Reflection WHEN PAUL WAS CONVERTED to “the Way”, God called him to missionary work among the Gentiles (Acts 9:1-6, 15-16). Then Paul went to Arabia, and three years later, he returned to Jerusalem (Acts 9:23-26; 22:17a; Gal 1:17-18); apparently, he was seeking to witness to the Jews there. While praying in the temple, God spoke to him: “Make haste, and get out of Jerusalem quickly” (vv.17-18a). Notice the great urgency. Reason? The Jews “will not accept your testimony about Me” (v.18b). But Paul objected, reasoning that being once a great persecutor of the faith that he now embraced, his testimony will be “incontrovertible evidence that Jesus is Israel’s Messiah and Saviour”16 (vv.19-20). Paul was confident that “they themselves understand” (v.19) and his testimony would be effective. Paul’s objection reflected “his reluctance”17 to leave Jerusalem. His objection flew in the face of God’s clear call for him. God had to sternly repeat to him His call: “Go! For I will send you to the Gentiles” (v.21). Sometimes, we think or act as though we know better than God. God says, “My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts” (Isa 55:8-9).

A Time to Avoid Suffering

S CRIPTURE

Acts 22:22-30; 9:15-16

O BSERVATION What can you learn about Paul in his response to being examined by torture by the Romans (vv.23-25) in the light of the Lord’s calling for him to suffer for His name’s sake (Acts 9:15-16)?

Deeper Reflection WHEN PAUL SAID IN HIS DEFENCE before the hostile Jews that God had sent him on a mission to the Gentiles, they interrupted him by yelling, throwing off their cloaks and tossing dust into the air (Acts 22:21-23). Then, the Roman commander ordered Paul to be brought to him to “be examined by scourging” to find out why the Jews were reacting to him in that way (v.24). The Romans interrogated slaves and other suspected persons by whipping them with a scourge composed of leather thongs to which rough pieces of bone and metal were attached; the afflictions on the victim’s back was a far worse experience than undergoing a Jewish beating (2 Cor 11:24) or the Roman punishment of being beaten with rods (Acts 16:22).18 Paul questioned the lawfulness of the procedure as “a Roman citizen and uncondemned” (v.25). Hearing that, the interrogators “withdrew immediately”, and the Roman commander was “afraid” (v.29). But didn’t the Lord call Paul to “how much he must suffer for My name’s sake” (Acts 9:15-16)? Paul was ready to suffer (Acts 20:22-24; 21:13), but he would avoid “unnecessary” suffering whenever he could. There is a time to assert our rights, and a time to deny our rights.

“I Am Jesus the Nazarene”

S CRIPTURE

Acts 22:6-8; John 1:45-46

O BSERVATION What is the theological significance of “I am Jesus the Nazarene” (vv.6-8) in the light of John 1:45-46?

Deeper Reflection PAUL ASKED, “Who are You, Lord?” The Lord answered, “I am Jesus the Nazarene” (v.8). Jesus was born in Bethlehem, but He lived in Nazareth all His life on earth, so much so that His identity was “Jesus the Nazarene”. In the New Testament, Jesus is called “Jesus the Nazarene” 13 times,19 and “Jesus of Nazareth” seven times.20 This is not without theological significance. When Philip told Nathaniel that he found “the Messiah” – “Jesus of Nazareth”, his immediate response was: “Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?” (Jn 1:45-46). What lies behind Nathanael’s scepticism is “not that the town had a bad reputation but that it was considered totally insignificant”21. “As Galileans were frequently despised by people from Judea, so it appears that even fellow Galileans despised Nazareth.”22 “Jesus of Nazareth” “reflected the self-abasement of the man from heaven”23. Jesus is referred to as “Jesus the Nazarene” and “Jesus of Nazareth” 19 times in the third person. And only once as “I am Jesus the Nazarene.” Don’t miss the present tense: “I am” – not “I was”. The exalted King of kings and Lord of lords is still “Jesus the Nazarene”! God is eternally a humble God! Follow Jesus the Nazarene.

WHY MUST I LOVE OTHERS? Love others because they matter to God. Scripture: Luke 10:25-37 ACTIVITY BITE Take turns to describe everyone you see, including those on the street, in one word. It can be based on their personalities or appearance, like friendly, funny, skinny, poor, colourful or loud, or special features such as glasses, e-scooter, schoolbag or ponytail. After describing the person, the rest of the group should say, “They matter to God too!” CHAT TIME Q1: Why do you think that everyone you see matters to God? Q2: Is there someone or a group of people whom you are surprised that God loves too? Q3: How do you feel about loving those who may be unfriendly to you? LEARNING POINT God made and loves every person you will ever meet − even those who are very different from us. He wants us to love them too! Whoever they are, wherever they are, we can treat them the way you want to be treated. Love them because they matter to God. Because love started with God, we can ask God to help us handle loving someone when it’s hard to show love. Remember, we shouldn’t choose who we want to love, but to love everyone. ACTION POINT Ask your parents to share how they have shown love to someone who was unfriendly to them. It might be someone at their workplace, at the supermarket or within the family. Think of how you can show love to someone “unloveable” this week. FAMILY PRAYER POINTS Thank God for loving us so much and for being with us now. Paul’s Conduct

S CRIPTURE

Acts 22:30, 23:1-10

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about Paul’s conduct in his defence before the Jewish leaders?

Deeper Reflection STANDING BEFORE the chief priests and the Jewish Council to make his defence, Paul started by saying that he had always lived before God with a clear conscience (v.1). But thereupon the high priest ordered for him to be slapped on the mouth (v.2). Then, Paul reacted aggressively. By calling the high priest “whitewashed wall” (v.3) he openly accused him of hypocrisy in claiming to judge according to the law, and yet acting unrighteously in the trial.24 Did Paul’s swift reply go against Jesus’ teaching of turning the left cheek to be slapped when being slapped on the right (Matt 5:39)? Apparently, Paul “lost his temper”25, for he made an apology when he was told that he had reviled God’s high priest (vv.4-5). Indeed, Paul was “both human and sinful, and we do not need to credit him with a sinless perfection that he himself never claimed”26. Yet at the same time, Paul’s words, “God is going to strike you” (v.3), was a prophetic word of judgement, which was fulfilled when Ananias was “assassinated as a pro-Roman by Jewish guerrillas (AD 66)”27. Despite our moments of weakness and failure as jars of clay (2 Cor 4:7), God by His grace stills works in us and through us.

God Speaking

S CRIPTURE

Acts 23:1-11

O BSERVATION What can you learn about God in Paul’s ugly experience in verses 1 to 11?

Deeper Reflection THE LAST TIME God spoke to Paul was at Caesarea, before leaving for Jerusalem (Acts 21:10-15). The Holy Spirit said that he would be bound in Jerusalem and delivered to the Gentiles. Undoubtedly, Paul looked at his present adverse circumstances based on what God had said. The principle here is: Live by the Word of God in dark and difficult times. The ugly experience that Paul just had (vv.1-10) must have left him with a heavy heart. The deep hatred, willful misunderstanding and close-mindedness of the Jewish leaders that prevented him from making a proper defence must have left him wondering if he would ever get out of Jerusalem alive, let alone fulfil his mission in Rome. “But the following night” – God’s perfect timing, “the Lord stood at his side” – God’s reassuring presence, “and said” to Paul, “Take courage” – God’s encouraging word (v.11). After this, God did not speak to Paul again until his next dark and difficult moment: “Do not fear.” (Acts 27:23-24). God is a speaking God (Heb 1:1-2). But God does not speak to us on demand, whenever we seek and ask Him to. When God is silent, it means He wants us to live by what He has already spoken in the Scriptures.

God’s Will

S CRIPTURE

Acts 19:21; Romans 1:10; 15:23; Acts 23:11

O BSERVATION What observations can you make about the will of God for Paul’s going to Rome in verse 21, Romans 1:10, Romans 15:23 and Acts 23:11?

Deeper Reflection TOWARDS THE END of his third missionary journey, Paul said “I must also see Rome” (v.21). Paul planned to go to Macedonia and Achaia to collect from the Gentile believers “a contribution for the poor” among the Jewish believers in Jerusalem to show the Gentiles’ solidarity with the Jews as one Church in Christ (v.21; Rom 15:25-27). Then from Jerusalem he would go to Rome to get the Roman believers’ support for his mission to Spain (Rom 15:23-24, 28). During his “three months” stay in Corinth29 (Acts 20:1-3), Paul wrote his Letter to the Romans. He wrote: “I have had for many years a longing to come to you” (Rom 15:23), and “always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you” (Rom 1:10). It was God’s will for Paul to go Jerusalem, and not without sufferings (Acts 20:22-23; 21:11-14). It is wrong to think that when we are in God’s will, things will always work out smoothly. Right in the midst of circumstances beyond Paul’s control, God spoke to him, “You must witness at Rome” (Acts 23:11). Paul had no idea how that would happen. God alone knew. And God would bring it to pass, because He had spoken (cf. Isa 14:24, 27).

Divine Intervention

S CRIPTURE

Acts 23:11-24

O BSERVATION What is the significance of verses 11 and 16 in the story of the Jews’ plot to kill Paul (vv.11-24)?

Deeper Reflection THE ASIAN JEWS had been thwarted in their attempts to lynch Paul (Acts 21:27-34). The Jewish Council had failed to convict him of any offense (Acts 23:1-10). Now a plot to murder Paul was hatched (vv.12-15). A group of Jews schemed to get Paul released by the Roman commander “for the Jewish Council’s further investigation”, so that they could ambush Paul to kill him. But, suddenly out of nowhere “the son of Paul’s sister” appeared in the picture (v.16a). And he “heard of their ambush” (v.16b). How did he come to learn of the secret plot? How was it that he had access to the Roman barracks so easily to inform Paul? We don’t know. But one thing is for sure: It was clearly God’s providence. Paul’s nephew was led to the Roman commander to inform him of the plot (vv.17-22). Then, under the escort of 200 soldiers, 200 spearmen and 70 mounted troops, Paul on horseback was sent “safely” to Felix the governor (vv.23-24). Such extraordinary overprovision of security was God’s protection. Undergirding and overarching all these was God’s purpose: “You must witness at Rome” (v.11). Indeed, even the most careful and cunning of human plans cannot succeed if God opposes them.

Purposeful Irony

S CRIPTURE

Acts 23:25-35

O BSERVATION What can you learn about God in Paul’s life in what Claudius Lysias wrote about Paul in his letter to Felix the governor in verses 28 to 30?

Deeper Reflection THE ROMAN COMMANDER, Claudius Lysias, sent Paul to Felix the governor accompanied by a letter, which gave a factual account of how the matter appeared from the Roman side (vv.25-30). Paul’s Innocence: Lysias wrote that he found Paul “to be accused over questions about their Law, but under no accusation deserving death or imprisonment” (v.29). But when he was informed of the plot to murder Paul, as an act of Roman justice, he sent him to Felix immediately, and instructed his accusers to bring charges against him before the governor (v.30). God’s Intention: All these happenings were rooted in God’s providence to accomplish His purpose (Acts 23:11). It is ironic that Roman justice would bring Paul to Rome as a prisoner, so that in his journey to Rome, he could speak to the highest levels of Roman society,31 like Felix the governor of Judea (Acts 24), Porcius Festus, Felix’s successor (Acts 25) and King Agrippa (Acts 26). This would have been unlikely if Paul had journeyed to Rome as part of his own missionary work. It is one of the mysteries of God and His providence that many times we cannot see why things are happening as they are, and in ways we could not have planned for ourselves.
