2016 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
NCAA DIVISION III In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013. The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions. Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first. The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience. The Three D’s: Discover Division III student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their interests and passions beyond the classroom and field of play…to discover themselves. Develop Division III institutions provide an environment that encourages student-athletes to develop into well-rounded adults. Small class sizes, the ability to participate in more than one sport, and an emphasis on participating activities outside of the classroom are all hallmarks of the Division III experience. Dedicate Division III institutions expect student-athletes to dedicate themselves to achieving their potential. Student-athletes must manage their busy schedules, keep up with class work and face the same challenges as the rest of the student-body.

MEMBERSHIPS
USA SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE
Overall, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members for the 2015-16 academic year. One of the oldest Division III conferences in the nation, the USA South was born as the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1963 when six institutions with similar philosophies of academics and athletics joined as founding members. The original members were: Charlotte College (now UNC-Charlotte), College of Charleston (S.C.), Methodist University, North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Lynchburg College. The basis for the new athletic conference was that participation would be strictly amateur, and thus no athletically awarded financial aid or athletic scholarships would be awarded. That philosophy still exists today. In February 2003, it was announced that the Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference would change its name to the USA South Athletic Conference. The name change was made official on July 1, 2003 and the first USA South Athletic Conference championships were awarded in the fall of 2003. The Conference was originally affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and remained with that affiliation until 1973. At that time the NCAA divided into three legislative and competitive divisions, with Division III allowing membership for nonathletic scholarship institutions only. The Dixie joined the NCAA, and in so doing, became one of the first conferences accepted into Division III. Since the inception of Division III, the USA South has been a leader in many areas, and has gained an outstanding regional and national reputation in a number of sports. The Conference sponsored athletic programs for men only until 1981. In that year, the NCAA expanded its sponsorship to include women’s sports, and the Dixie followed that lead by including women’s sports. The Conference now sponsors championships in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s golf and women’s lacrosse for a total of 14 sports. Each year the Conference not only recognizes the participants for outstanding athletic achievements, but academic excellence as well. Student athletes who maintain academic averages of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale in both academic semesters are named to the Academic All-Conference team. This group annually averages well over 800 students. Each year, the President’s Cup is awarded to the school that accumulates the most points throughout the academic year in sports that are sponsored by the USA South. In 2004-05, the President’s Cup was changed to have one winner for men’s sports and one winner for women’s. In 2005-06, the Conference began awarding a men’s, a women’s and an overall President’s Cup.

HOME OF THE SCOTS Finished for the 2009 season, the Softball program has called this field home ever since. The field sits adjacent to the baseball field to complete the baseball/softball complex. The field features a very well-maintained playing surface, oversized bullpens, and spacious dugouts for both the home and visiting teams. In the summer of 2010, permanent bleachers were added behind home plate with a set of bleachers on both the first and third base sides. The scoreboard stands in right field and features the teams’ total runs, hits, and errors along with the current inning and ball-strike-out count. The venue played host to an NCCAA Mid-East Regional tournament in 2012. In 2014, the indoor hitting facility (right) was completed inside the Highlands Fieldhouse. The facility has two hitting areas and is used by both baseball and softball programs.

SARA RUSSELL • Head Coach • 8th year Head softball coach Sara Russell will begin her eighth season at the helm of the program in 2016. Russell came aboard the Covenant athletic staff in 2008 to serve as the second head coach in the program’s history. Russell arrived at Covenant from Paducah, Ky., where she played and coached at Mid-Continent University, and where her husband, William, served as the baseball coach. In her only season as head coach at Mid-Continent, her 2006 squad went 28-26 overall and 14-8 in conference play and won the conference tournament. Russell was named KIAC Coach of the Year. At Covenant, Russell has guided the Lady Scots program to three appearances in the NCCAA National Tournament in 2010, 2011, and 2012. In 2011, Russell coached the Lady Scots to a successful season winning a program record 22 games, concluding with an NCCAA Mid-East Region title, a trip to the NCCAA National Tournament, and the Mid-East Coach of the Year award. In 2012 the team advanced to the NCCAA National Tournament yet again following another season with over 20 wins. During her seven years at Covenant, Russell has coached 10 NCCAA All-Americans, eight all-conference performers, and had a team earn the conference’s Champion of Character award (2009, AAC) and Sportsmanship Award (USA South, 2014 and 2015).

Off the field, Russell has had 30 players earn conference all-academic honors with a record 14 during the 2014-15 academic year. Additionally, Russell’s teams have made efforts to reach out to the community through volunteer opportunities. In 2014, her team took a mission trip to the pacific northwest and Canada. Russell grew up in Duncan, British Columbia, where she played on all-star and travel softball teams until she was 18 years old. Her success as a youth included two World Series appearances: 1994 in Portland, Oregon, and 1996 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. While pitching for a traveling team out of Vancouver, she was invited to Mid-Continent for a recruiting visit and tryout that ended up bringing her to the U.S. for a collegiate career. In addition to coaching the Lady Scots, Russell also conducts private pitching lessons for youngsters in the local area. She and her husband, William, live in Chattanooga, Tenn., with their three children.

CHRISTINE ENGBERS • Assistant Coach/JV Head Coach • 4th year overall Christine Engbers is entering her fourth year with the Covenant softball program in 2016, but her first as the full-time assistant coach. Engbers was hired as the full-time assistant in December of 2015. “I am really grateful to have this opportunity to coach at Covenant,” Engbers said. “This is a program that I love, and being able to be a part of it is a huge blessing.” Engbers has experienced tremendous success as a head coach in the high school ranks. She previously served as the head coach at Dade County High School in Trenton, Ga. Her squad won the Georgia High School Association Class AA state championship in 2012 and made another deep run into playoffs in both 2013 and 2014. Engbers was a finalist for the Chattanooga Times Free Press’ annual Best of Preps Coach of the Year honors in June of 2013. She was named GACA Coach of the Year and Georgia Dugout Club Coach of the Year in 2012. In addition to her softball coaching duties at Dade County, Engbers taught English and coached the JV and middle school basketball teams. “I am honored to have Christine join our staff as our full-time assistant coach,” said head coach Sara Russell. “She strengthens our program with her spectacular coaching skills and her strong desire to make players better both on and off the field.” Engbers graduated from Covenant in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. She played four years and had a career .335 batting average, fourth best in school history, and ranks second in program history with 162 hits and 45 multi-hit games. Engbers holds the program’s record for career steals with 59, including the season record of 26 in 2012. She was a second team NCCAA All-American in 2010 after hitting .352 with 15 stolen bases which helped the Lady Scots reach the NCCAA National Tournament for the first time.

SEASON PREVIEW
2016 SOFTBALL MEDIA GUIDE
PREVIEW: Experience, Consistency Key for Covenant in 2016 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- After a tough couple of seasons, the Covenant softball program is ready to turn the corner in 2016. Covenant begins the year on Saturday, Feb. 13 with a doubleheader at Wesleyan starting at 3 p.m. in Macon, Ga. Under eighth-year head coach Sara Russell, the Lady Scots bring back every key player from last year’s team and a recruiting class that yielded some players that will add depth and talent to the program. “I’m really looking forward to the year,” Russell said. “We have great hopes of turning the corner this year. Our freshmen from last year have matured and know what to expect heading into their sophomore year. We have a really experienced and talented team.” All nine position starters return as do two pitchers who combined to start 25 of 32 games a season ago. The roster features three seniors, two juniors, eight sophomores and five freshmen making it a young team, but a squad that has plenty of college experience. Covenant brings back junior All-USA South performer Jordan Brett and senior Morgan Lane. Brett and Lane have been forces in the middle of the lineup the last two years and Russell expects even more production out of her top two hitters this year. Brett hit .438, a single-season program record, last season with four home runs and 33 RBIs and was named to the All-USA South second team. Lane, an All-USA player in 2014, was also impressive with a .396 average with four homers and 24 runs batted in. Brett will handle third base, while Lane will start at first base. “From Jordan and Morgan, we’re looking for more production and consistency this year,” Russell added. “We want them to drive the ball even more than last year and have a high slugging percentage.”

SEASON PREVIEW
In the outfield, senior Madison Quirk will man center field. Quirk, a three-year starter in center, has hit over .300 in each of her first three seasons, including a .315 clip last year, and is a consistent performer in the outfield. Fellow senior Kendall Whann and junior Kaitlyn Sirmons will vie for playing time in the other two outfield spots along with freshman Madalyn Ames. At catcher, sophomores Shannon Schmitt and Shade Epes look to be the two contributors. Both showed their skills behind the plate a year ago and offer Russell and her coaching staff some options offensively and on the base paths. “This might be one of the hardest years to make out a lineup,” Russell said. “We have so much depth with players that can all contribute and offer different sets of skills to the lineup. It’s a good problem to have.” Adding to the talent pool are utility players in sophomore Joni Johnson and freshman Carlin Labuzan. Johnson was effective both at the plate and in the circle a year ago as she hit .309 and had an earned run average of 3.74 with four wins and two saves. Labuzan was an All-State player in Florida and adds more talent for Russell. “Joni will help in the circle as a reliever again as she did well in that role last year,” Russell said. “She also has a consistent bat that we want to get into the lineup when she’s not pitching.” In the circle, sophomore Cris Gant looks to be the consistent starter for Russell. Gant showed plenty of talent and promise in her freshman year before injuries hampered her efforts in the second half of the year. Still, Gant struck out 77 batters in just 58 innings of work and picked up four victories. “I have high expectations for Cris,” Russell noted. “She has the talent to be one of the top pitchers in the conference. She will be the workhorse in the circle this year for us.” Sophomore Tyler Epes saw significant time at pitcher last year with a team-high 59.1 innings pitched and will look to contribute in similar ways this year. Freshman Carsyn Stone and sophomore Kat Andrews could also see some time in the circle. Other freshmen include Megan Wardlaw and Amber Grimes. Both players provide added depth to the roster both in the field and at pitcher. Russell has been impressed with Wardlaw’s bat and Grimes can play multiple positions. All the talent aside, Russell says the biggest aspects of the game her program has worked on since the fall is the team’s mentality and producing consistent efforts. “The skill level is definitely there, but we’ve worked hard on developing the mental side,” Russell said. “We have great aspirations for this team, but need to play well consistently.” Covenant’s mental toughness will be put to the test this season with a challenging schedule. The Lady Scots face regional powers Berry and Birmingham Southern in non-conference play, both on the road. In USA South play, Covenant will host perennial conference favorites Piedmont and Averett. “I think it’s a well-rounded schedule,” Russell noted. “Some tough non-conference teams with Berry and Birmingham Southern. I like being able to have Averett and Piedmont at home this year, which will be huge.” After playing Wesleyan on Saturday, the Lady Scots open the home portion of their schedule with doubleheaders against Berea (Feb. 19) and Mount St. Joseph (Feb. 20). Covenant will play 22 of its 40 scheduled contests at home. Home games this year will feature live stats for all games, while live video will be offered for select contests. All links can be found on the team’s schedule page or by visiting athletics.covenant.edu/live

Rounding out the infield up the middle will be sophomore shortstop Kasey Hart and sophomore second baseman Jami Johnson. The duo showed flashes of promise in their rookie seasons, both at the plate and in the field, and Russell expects that to rise this year with more experience.

2015 SEASON REVIEW
Covenant won 11-10.
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant softball team got off to a fast start on the season, raising hopes that this team would exceed expectations. While the Lady Scots cooled off in the second half, they were able to take incremental steps in their development on the season.
The two Johnson twins also had significant roles as freshmen. Joni hit .309 with a .404 on-base percentage. She also pitched 58 innings, finishing with a teamlow 3.74 ERA and tied for first in the USA South with two saves. Jami hit .288 with six doubles and 13 RBIs. Her on-base percentage of .443 was third on the team. The Johnsons were first and second on the team in walks and combined for 28.
Covenant started the year with a 5-1 record, the best six-game start to a season in program history, before finishing 11-21. Eight of the Lady Scots’ 32 games came against teams that earned spots in the NCAA Tournament (Averett, Emory, Berry, LaGrange). In addition, there were seven games which the Lady Scots lost by three runs or less.
Another pair of twins, Shade Epes and Tyler Epes, were battery mates for many of Tyler’s 12 starts in the circle for the Lady Scots. Shade hit .273 with a .360 onbase percentage, while Tyler led the team in innings pitched with 59.1. Hart hit at the top of the order for much of the season and finished third on the team with 19 runs scored, while pacing the club with three stolen bases. She finished the season with a bang by hitting a pair of home runs in Covenant’s season-ending doubleheader sweep against Mary Baldwin on April 11. Kendall Whann started 31 games and had four outfield assists to lead the team.
“We started out of the gate strong and I was proud of our level of play,” seventhyear head coach Sara Russell said. “We had a tough patch in the middle, but finished the season playing well.” Complicating matters for much of the season was the weather. Covenant saw six doubleheaders get wiped out with just two (Agnes Scott and Greensboro) able to be rescheduled. “We had a lot of obstacles this season from weather to injuries, I am proud of all that we fought through,” Russell said. GAME OF THE YEAR: Covenant 12, Berry 6 (Feb. 14, 2015) In the first game of the new season, Covenant took on Berry at home on February 14. The Lady Scots were breaking in new starters at five positions (all freshmen) in shortstop Kasey Hart, catcher Shannon Schmitt, second baseman Jami Johnson, designated player Joni Johnson and pitcher Cris Gant. The Vikings were coming off a 31-11 season and ended the regular season 32-6 with a conference championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. Despite all the new faces, Covenant showed no signs of inexperience and scored six runs in the opening inning and another four in the third to take a 10-1 lead. With single runs in the fifth and sixth inning, the Lady Scots put away Berry 12-6 for win No. 1 on the year. Gant pitched five innings, giving up just four hits and three earned runs with nine strikeouts. Joni Johnson came on in relief and gave up one run in two innings. The newcomers to the lineup combined for three hits, including one double, three runs scored, four walks and four RBIs.
Kaitlyn Sirmons was also a valuable part of the team, appearing at shortstop, second base, left field, and right field and making only one error in 26 games. Sirmons was named to the USA South All-Sportsmanship team. A couple of other freshmen in Amanda English and Jacey Massetto each started more than 10 games. English hit .412 and Massetto had eight runs scored and two stolen bases. Junior Nicole White and freshmen Kat Andrews and Tatum Watford saw action in the field as well.
Besides the freshmen, Madison Quirk had three hits, three runs scored and an RBI while Morgan Lane had a double among her three hits while driving in two. Jordan Brett extended her hitting streak that started in 2014 to 13 games.
In the circle, Gant struck out 77 in 58 innings. Her strikeouts per seven innings of 9.29 easily led the conference and set a season program record.
TOP PERFORMERS: Covenant had several players make key contributions to the team during the year. Most significantly was the impact that Brett had on the offense. Brett led the team in most offensive categories and hit .438 (eighth in the USA South) with four home runs and 33 RBIs (seventh in conference). She also finished sixth in the conference with 13 doubles. Her batting average set a program record for a season, topping Beth Harris’ .434 mark in 2012. Brett earned All-USA South second team honors for a second consecutive year.
Junior Hannah Rogers and senior Cori Hilt also saw action at pitcher for the Lady Scots, each starting two games. Hilt finishes her career with 73 appearances, 34 complete-games and 313.2 innings pitched. IN THE RANKS: 9.29: Cris Gant’s strikeouts per seven innings average, which was first in the USA South and is 11th nationally. 2.06: Doubles per game as a team, which ranked Covenant second in the conference and 15th in Division III.
Close behind Brett in terms of offensive production was Lane. The junior batted .396 with four home runs, 24 RBIs and 11 doubles. During the year, Lane put together a 17-game hitting streak, setting a new program record. Lane hit three home runs and had eight RBIs in a doubleheader sweep at Agnes Scott early in the year and that earned her both USA South Player of the Week and NFCA Hitter of the Week accolades.
AWARD WINNERS: USA South All-Conference Jordan Brett - 2nd team USA South All-Sportsmanship Kaitlyn Sirmons
Quirk also had a solid year offensively for the Lady Scots, hitting .315. It was the third straight season hitting above .300 for the junior. Quirk also hit eight doubles with a triple and one home run while driving in 17. Her one homer was a grand slam against Maryville on March 18.
USA South Player of the Week Morgan Lane - March 2
At catcher, Schmitt took over primary catching duties and impressed as she threw out 10 runners attempting to steal on the season (second-most in the USA South). She also was consistent on the offensive end, hitting .296 with five doubles. Schmitt produced a walk-off single against Wesleyan on March 24 as
USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Week Joni Johnson - March 2 NFCA Hitter of the Week (Division III) Morgan Lane - March 4

Are you a Booster?
A booster is an individual that: • Promotes Covenant athletics program. • Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations. • Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant. • Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes. Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever. If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at tim.sceggel@covenant.edu. What is an extra benefit? Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties. Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to: • Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car. • Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere. • Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services. • Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone. • Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete. • A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan. • The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment. • The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards). This list is not exhaustive. Please refrain from offering prospects and/or current student-athletes and their families and friends anything that is not available to all students or the general public. Any questions or concerns should be directed to: Tim Sceggel Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance & Operations Email: tim.sceggel@covenant.edu or phone: 706.419.1517
