Core Modules Finance, Funding and Legislative Frameworks for Success The aim of this module is to explore key accounting and finance practice and the associated decision making tools within organisations. It will cover the nature of accounting and finance tools within a variety of business environments and consider appropriate management techniques to help identify strategic options.Drawing on the disciplines of financial and management accounting, this module will enable students to gain an appreciation of the type of financial information that is routinely produced by organisations for internal and external use. The module will use a wide range of business scenarios and apply relevant accounting techniques to critically evaluate and interpret financial information.

Sustainable Strategy - from Planning to Implementation The module challenges concepts of strategy, its scope, purpose and outcomes and provides a practical outline of a number of different approaches to strategic management. The module also highlights the international scope of strategic management, the globalisation of technologies and markets and looks at the role of strategic alliances and international collaborations in establishing and nurturing competence for the achievement of strategic advantage.

Marketing in a Global Age

Leading in a Changing World

This module studies marketing: the application of marketing techniques and concepts to a number of different environments. It analyses the nature of marketing, the core concepts, techniques and processes. Students will have the opportunity to learn the complexity of managing marketing and applying theory in practice, to assess the effectiveness of marketing, discuss some of the difficulties in implementing marketing as well as the general ethical issues that arise from its use. Students will also appreciate how different aspects of marketing relate to and interact with each other.

In a volatile and unpredictable economy and even in good times, leaders must demonstrate extraordinary performance to their employees, customers, shareholders and other stakeholders. The ability to lead sustainable strategic change is a key characteristic of effective senior managers and executives. Globalisation has increased the complexity of the role of a leader, in particular in delivering the challenge to integrate different national and organisational cultures to deliver international business strategies.

Therefore, this module aims to facilitate students’ understanding of applied marketing. Whilst building on and utilising basic knowledge of marketing literature, it seeks more to develop student critical analysis and understanding of marketing in practice. It seeks less to impart theory or knowledge but more to provide an environment in which advanced masters students can exchange their ideas, experiences and thoughts in order to build up critical understanding and appreciation of the value and limits of marketing in practice.

This module examines the knowledge, skills, behaviours and techniques of leadership and explores the role of leadership in relation to other business themes such as globalisation, strategy, innovation and organisational development Leadership is one of the most pervasive social phenomena. As such it is also a controversial one. This module will provide students with an opportunity to consider and develop some key leadership skills to support them in building their international business careers. Students will be expected to prepare themselves to address contemporary leadership issues such as globalisation, virtual teams and corporate social responsibility. This will be achieved by the acquisition of a critical understanding of the impact of such issues in practice.

Business and Management Research Methods or Entrepreneurship Students as future managers and leaders will need to document their company, industry or consultancy research based on accepted procedures within the business and management academic community. This module introduces students to the major theoretical perspectives and research strategies and associated methodologies in business and management research. Consequently, the module aims to provide students with an understanding of the major philosophical issues within business and management research and enable students to identify the nature and characteristics of qualitative and quantitative research. Students can also learn to identify which theoretical perspective is appropriate to research the dissertation problem under consideration and to develop the theoretical foundation appropriate for the research problem. Students will understand the differences between primary and secondary data collection and how to collect/collate data and analyse and interpret it depending on the nature and characteristics of the research. Students planning on starting their own enterprise or to continue in their own business after graduation can benefit from other forms of business research. These are addressed in the alternative module to Research Methods that leads to the entrepreneurship project in the final term. In this module, students will explore various entrepreneurship and startup models and research as a platform for the market research of a potential business opportunity. Students will then create a feasibility study and learn how to find relevant current data with judgement and confidence towards justifying a perceived opportunity and its implementation.

Specialist Modules Buying and Merchandising in a Changing Global Industry The ability to understand and interpret trends and translate them into stock in store is the focus of the module with the emphasis being on aligning product, brand promise and customer profile. As well as being at the technological forefront of the creative industries fashion is one of the most agile in its response to the global shifts which are impacting upon all aspects of society, reflecting the changes in which people live has a huge impact upon shopping channels the industry offers. The module analyses on-line retailing as well as more conventional in store methods, studying which business models are best suited for specific markets. It studies the impact of the psychology of the consumer in a specific global location upon the method of consuming the specific products. As Fashion professionals, individuals need to be able to think strategically and creatively in respect to the problems which present themselves. The purpose of this module is to underpin an understanding of the fashion consumer with a more concrete knowledge of the fashion cycle and how to achieve the best financial outcome each season.

Trend Prediction and Fashion Forecasting This module gives an opportunity to explore in more depth the importance and the distinctions between Trend Analysis, Trend Prediction and Fashion Forecasting. At its core is how analysts and forecasters identify emerging trends and arrive at a commercial outcome understanding how a societal trend emerges into a fashion statement, and the implications on product development, marketing and brand strategies. Fashion professionals use of a wide range of sources including the printed press, blogs, media including films and music, cultural as well as trade shows and the industry standard WGSN database to inform their understanding of the marketplace. Accordingly great emphasis is placed upon these research methods in this and other fashion modules enlivening research and communication methods.

Project Management Project management is a truly cross functional discipline and, through their engagement with this module, students will develop their awareness of the interrelated nature and interdependence of functional areas within business. The module provides a variety of theoretical concepts and frameworks on which the project management knowledge systems is based and apply effective methodologies, tools and techniques applicable to managing contemporary projects. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of traditional and emerging modes of application of project management philosophy in contemporary organisational environments. Students will also have the chance to develop the skills to critically analyse and evaluate current project management practices in organisations and offer competent suggestions for improvements of existing project management processes.

Fashion Design and Product Development A strong understanding of the processes involved in developing product is key to the success of any business in the fashion industry. The module covers how this activity varies depending on which market segment a company functions within, and how brands interpret trends to deliver product to their customers at the correct point of the fashion cycle to achieve the best financial outcome. All levels of the industry are discussed within this module with a view to achieving a strong overall understanding of existing and emerging business models which can be applied to more than one market sector which is key to transferable skills and employability.
