It has everything you need under one roof, social facilities, private study areas and trained staff who can offer relevant advice. Our diverse and vibrant mix of students on campus is just one element which contributes to our vision to become a global enterprising university. Internationalisation is embedded throughout the university giving our students a truly international dimension to their studies. Many students conduct real-life research activity, solving real-world problems in one of our specialist Applied Research Centres or Groups. We place great emphasis on the ability to transfer our research expertise to create innovative ways of working or to deliver economic, commercial, environmental, cultural or social benefit. The Applied Research Centres and Groups are multidisciplinary with excellent links to external organisations and funding bodies. The staff working within these areas are renowned in their fields and, with their expertise, we are able to deliver a lively and dynamic environment for doctoral students to work in. Our Masters programmes are explicitly designed to develop knowledge and skills that are at the leading edge of professional practice, or address highly relevant current issues. They prepare students for senior positions in organisations all over the world and draw on the practical experience that students themselves bring to the course. If you are interested in studying in an environment that not only provides you with an excellent education but also exploits strong links with industry and research expertise then Coventry is the ideal choice. The University’s partnerships with commercial, academic and governmental organisations are continually evolving – for the latest information visit www.coventry.ac.uk/researchnet Whatever your personal goals, I hope you find a programme at Coventry University that meets your needs and I look forward to welcoming you to our community of learning.

THE CITY

The City Coventry City – like the University – embraces the themes of reinvention and innovation. The University lies in the heart of the city and its buildings are as much a part of the landscape as the distinctive Cathedral spires. To complement the University’s plans for a state-of-the-art new campus, the City has responded by unveiling a £6 billion blueprint for a new city-centre; including green parks and open spaces in the middle of the city, a waterway following the path of the River Sherbourne through the middle of a new shopping centre with a new library at the heart of the groundbreaking design. The plans continue to embrace the City’s historical past by showcasing its medieval heritage, tastefully combining the old with the new. Even today, before these revolutionary plans are complete, you can walk through Coventry’s pedestrianised City-centre, and see over 1000 years of England’s history, ranging from the medieval charm of historic Spon Street to the architectural innovation of Millennium Place. The close relationship between the City and the University recently contributed to the award of ‘Midlands City of the Year’ at the Midlands Property Awards 2009. Coventry beat off stiff competition from Birmingham, Nottingham, Stoke, Leicester, Derby and West Bromwich. At the heart of Coventry’s nomination was the work to transform the city-centre and the University which was drawn up with an unprecedented level of input from local people. Culture and arts has been given a major boost in the City over recent years. Coventry Transport Museum attracts thousands of visitors each year and the new development of the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has welcomed a History Centre, Creative Media and Arts facilities, galleries and exhibitions, school space, cafés and much more. The Belgrade Theatre and Plaza has benefitted from an £11m redevelopment including a seven-storey extension, hotel and range of bars and restaurants. By day, Coventry is a great place to shop, eat, drink and relax while, at night, it transforms into a buzzing, vibrant centre with bars and clubs to keep you entertained through to the small hours. Right on the University’s doorstep is Priory Place; home to shops, bars, cafés and apartments and home to BBC Radio Coventry & Warwickshire. Three shopping centres; the £33m SkyDome complex – incorporating the UKs first and largest City-centre based IKEA, a superclub, ice rink and multiplex cinema are just some of the City-centre’s entertainment highlights.

4

The Ricoh Arena is home to the City’s football team and has become a major entertainment venue for the Midlands. Thousands of visitors flock to the Arena for major sporting events including rugby union’s Heineken Cup and the Arena has recently been announced as a venue for the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Some of the biggest names in music have performed to sell-out crowds including Take That, Oasis and Bon Jovi. The Ricoh is based at Arena Park, just outside the City-centre. The Park brings together shops – including Next, Marks and Spencer, Borders, Starbucks and the largest Tesco in Europe, with a casino and leisure facilities to form a popular city attraction. But it’s not all superstores and superclubs. Coventry is a gateway to some of the most historic, cultural and scenic areas of the UK, including the peace and beauty of the Warwickshire countryside. For a relaxing escape, close to Coventry you’ll find Royal Leamington Spa, the castles of Kenilworth and Warwick and Coombe Park – a 300-acre estate comprising an abbey, formal gardens, woodland nature trails and wildlife. For literary heritage, Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon attracts people from all over the world and also boasts a superb cultural mix with live music as well as theatre on offer. Best of all, it’s only 20 minutes away from Coventry And then there’s Birmingham, Coventry’s bigger, brasher neighbour. It is a thriving centre for arts, entertainment, sport and culture and the home of the world-famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and is just 30 minutes away by road or rail. The National Indoor Arena, the LG Arena, the Birmingham Hippodrome, Symphony Hall, the International Convention Centre and the historic redeveloped Town Hall are just some of the wonderful venues to be found in Britain’s second city.

THE CAMPUS

The Campus

The new campus was borne out of student feedback; you asked for it and we’re delivering it. Two iconic buildings will be the first steps in the development, which will see Coventry’s campus evolve. The first is a Student Enterprise Centre which will become the new heart of the University, providing first class facilities for students and a new home for the Students’ Union. The building, which will have two frontages, will feature shops, bars and cafés as well as an entertainment venue and creative space for students.

THE CAMPUS

Coventry’s campus is changing. The University has embarked on a £160 million ‘masterplan’ to create a campus that provides students with the very latest in teaching and learning facilities combined with open, communal spaces for relaxing, socialising, studying and showcasing the University’s talents in art and cultural enterprise.

Work has already started on a new home for the Faculty of Engineering and Computing located next to the University’s library. The building is designed to be the most advanced technological learning space in the UK and probably the world. It features the highest standards of sustainability, with elements as passive cooling, rainwater harvesting and solar thermal energy capture. We have developed a strong view on how we want our students to develop the best employability skills and have designed the learning spaces to accommodate this approach. Our active approach to learning requires space for collaboration and creative learning in a beautiful and inspirational space. The plans will also see much of the area inside the campus become pedestrianised, creating a safer, smarter site. Lighting, the use of public art, seating and horticulture will all play a part in creating Coventry’s futuristic new campus – providing you with the ideal base for your studies for the next few years. While you are here you will continue to enjoy all the facilities which make Coventry so unique. We’ve already spent millions on providing first class facilities to deliver a first class experience.

Classes are offered in: French, Spanish, Italian, German, Greek, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese (Mandarin), Russian and Arabic. Programme of Study & Examination A research degree involves undertaking a substantial individual research project and preparing a thesis which is the main focus of the examination process. Some taught modules will be studied to help prepare you to undertake the research project but these are secondary to the research project and preparation of the thesis. The thesis is examined at the end by an oral examination which determines the result. PhD and MPhil degrees will involve making a significant and original contribution to knowledge, whereas Professional Doctorates and Masters by Research degrees normally entail applying advanced knowledge to professional practice.

Entry Requirements Applicants will normally have either:

n

The University does not award discipline specific research degrees. The degree certificate will normally describe the degree and the title of the thesis. Professional doctorates are named awards.

i. A postgraduate Masters degree in a discipline which is appropriate to the proposed programme of study. OR ii. First or upper second class Honours Degree or an approved equivalent award in an appropriate discipline. OR iii. Appropriate research work or professional experience at a postgraduate level which has resulted in published work, written reports or other appropriate evidence of achievement. Subject-specific entry requirements may be added to these minimum requirements, for example, a portfolio of creative work may be required in art subjects. International applicants with an equivalent of an upper second class honours degree or who have demonstrated experience at an appropriate level will be considered for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English or who have not completed a first degree in which English was the main language of tuition must provide evidence of English language ability. An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 6.5 or higher (and at least 5.5 in each component) or equivalent qualification is the criterion for admission.

How to Apply for Research & Doctoral Programmes

The most important aspect of undertaking a research degree is to find a subject area and topic you want to research and a Supervisory Team who have the appropriate experience. The Subject A to Z in this Section provides examples of subjects we can supervise and potential research themes. Please use the Subject A to Z and check the University website to identify potential research student opportunities (www.coventry.ac.uk/researchnet/opportunities). While we may list research opportunities there is no guarantee that staff have the free capacity to supervise a research student or that the opportunity has not been taken already by another student.

ACCOUNTANCY, FINANCE & INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT

Accountancy, Finance & Investment Management Accounting & Financial Management

Finance

Qualification: MSc

The MSc Finance programme builds upon the research strengths of staff within the school. The MSc Finance provides students with an opportunity to develop their studies in the area of finance but within a managerial context. The emphasis of the course is on interpreting, evaluating and communicating financial information for strategic and managerial purposes. In addition, students will also examine the reasons for and the effects of financial reforms throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

The MSc Accounting and Financial Management programme is a new exciting development in Coventry University Business School. The programme is designed as an advanced programme for students who have already obtained a first degree (or equivalent) in Accounting and Finance. The main feature of this programme is that it covers both advanced areas of Accounting and Financial Management. This gives a certain level of flexibility to students who want to explore more before specialising in a particular area. The MSc is an important stepping-stone for those who want to become, for example, Accounting and Financial Managers, Professional Accountants, Financial Analysts and Financial Consultants. In addition to training on functional accounting and finance topics, the programme also develops students’ quantitative and research skills, that are very useful for their final MSc dissertation. The experience of doing a dissertation will in turn help students’ career development because many high-level jobs involve a certain element of research. However, the opportunity also exists for students to take up a company internship rather than doing a traditional dissertation so that they can apply the theories learnt in the course to a real commercial environment.

Finance Qualification: MBA MBA Finance provides recognition in the form of an award for those students who wish to tailor their programme to ensure a combination of generic MBA modules, with some specialist coverage of the financial environment, the finance function and the key financial issues facing modern organisations. Environmental Management Qualification: MBA

MSc in Environmental Management ‘I was studying Bio-medical science in London and some friends recommended the course here at Coventry so I did some research and it looked like the best course so I applied. It is a really good course, it’s taught properly and the staff are really helpful. I think it’s brilliant that the library will stay open until late and that the open access suite in the Graduate Centre is available for postgraduates whenever we need it. I like the fact that we have our own spacious centre to study in where we have all of our lectures and resources for both study and relaxation.’

Geography, Environment & Sustainability

Victoria Uche-Anyanwu

This course integrates the specialist knowledge of Environmental Management into a business context. Many large companies have already acknowledged and addressed their environmental responsibilities, but small companies, which may create 70% of industrial pollution, are reluctant to enter the environmental management arena. They anticipate that the costs of environmental management will be prohibitive. The programme will explore opportunities for companies to embrace environmental management in a profitable way. The intertwined aspects of this will be developed in the mandatory modules of the course: technical, legislative and fiscal. The technical measures such as improved waste management can lead to savings. Environmental Law is now founded on EU directives and it is becoming essential for companies to plan for future legislation, and finally taxation to reflect environmental damage is a tool increasingly applied by governments. Successful companies will need managers who can address all of these issues.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

Mignone Silveira MSc Physiotherapy ‘I had already studied for my BSc in physiotherapy and was working as a practicing physio when I decided to take my masters qualification. Coventry was the first choice for me, the course is really prestigious and the University has an excellent reputation. Its also very well located and there are lots of friendly people around. There’s been a plenty of support from the faculty while I’ve been studying here and one of the best things about the University is the friends that you will make and the support groups that are available when you need some help. The other students on my course are really a delight to spend time with and it really helps that you enjoy your time here. Taking a masters is definitely worth the effort and Coventry University has been a great place to do it.’

Politics, International Relations & Sociology Community and Social Action

Politics, International Relations & Sociology

Qualification: MA The Community and Social Action MA degree at Coventry University allows you to critically evaluate policies to combat social inequality and social exclusion; and to discuss current issues such as the existence of a ‘broken society’, community cohesion, the EU social agenda, gender issues and the needs of marginalised groups.

Qualification: MA

The Community and Social Action MA degree is designed for students looking for careers related to social action in the community. It also provides professional development opportunities for those already working in this area.

This course aims to provide students with an integrated security perspective, combining traditional militarised security concerns with contemporary threats of terrorism, organised crime, and non-traditional security. Since the end of the Cold War there has been a widening in the number of threats affecting individual, group, state and international security. The degree provides students with an up-to-date set of modules which examine these threats.

Diplomacy, Law & Global Change Qualification: MA This programme is designed to shed light on the emerging global order of the 21st Century from the perspectives of diplomacy and international law. The multidisciplinary nature of the course is reflected in two core areas: Diplomacy and the International System, and International Law in the Contemporary World Arena. These focus on the legal framework regulating international relations. They examine the premises on which international law is based and how it is generated by state practice, diplomacy, treaties, arbitral decisions and moral imperatives often linked to resolutions of the United Nations. The place of the United Nations and other organisations in the changing institutional framework of international law will be emphasised.

Sociology Qualification: MA Are you interested in debating and reflecting on the pertinent issues of our time? The Sociology MA degree is an involving course that looks at new and relevant issues, taking into account changing times and circumstances.

140

Terrorism, International Crime & Global Security

Drawing on the expertise within the Sociology department at Coventry University the Sociology MA degree is interdisciplinary in nature, reaching out to and drawing on other intellectual disciplines. Be part of a vibrant and dynamic department and intellectual culture. Develop your ‘sociology imagination’, view the world with a more perceptive, a more critical eye.

This timely and exciting programme is designed to engage students with some of the most significant and pressing security issues confronting us today.

Twentieth Century History Qualification: MA As we embark upon the 21st Century our lives remain influenced by the dramatic events of the twentieth. This MA provides an opportunity to examine some of the key events which marked that turbulent century, offering an insight into the problems of the present. Using a historical approach, this programme ranges widely geographically, from Europe in the inter-war years, to the Soviet Union and Russia, from Vietnam to Post-Colonial Africa to France and the Fifth Republic. The clash of ideas in its domestic and international settings, which was a central characteristic of the 20th Century, will feature prominently.

PSYCHOLOGY

Parapsychology (online)

Psychology (online)

Qualifications: MSc/PgDip/PgCert

Qualification: Graduate Certificate

This two year part-time course is taught using online delivery of lectures and workshops. It provides students with a comprehensive and critically oriented understanding of the psychological investigation of ostensibly paranormal phenomena. Course content includes modules on the history of Parapsychology, Research Methods, Extrasensory Perception and Psychokinesis, Evidence for Survival of Bodily Death (e.g. Apparitions and Near-Death), Anomalous Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology, and an empirical dissertation. Applicants should typically have a minimum second class degree in a relevant discipline, or its equivalent. A degree in psychology is desirable but not essential, given the interdisciplinary nature of parapsychological research.

This is a distance learning, online, two module, 60 credit pre-conversion programme aimed at graduate students whose first degree was in a non-psychology based discipline. It is suitable for applicants who wish to enrol on the Graduate Diploma in Psychology, but who do not have 60 credits of psychology. Two modules are studied: Introduction to Psychology and Investigating Psychology. The first provides a foundation in the core elements of psychological theory from a social, biological, cognitive and developmental perspective; whilst the second complements this by providing an introduction to research methodologies and statistics.

Psychology Qualification: Graduate Diploma This is a conversion programme for graduate students whose first degree had a psychology component but which did not provide eligibility for the Graduate Basis for for Chartered Membership (GBC, formerly known as the Graduate Basis for Registration or GBR) with the British Psychological Society. A mix of mandatory and optional modules is studied that form part of the undergraduate psychology programme. These cover the core social, biological, cognitive, and developmental approaches to psychology as well as methodological approaches and statistics. There is also the opportunity to study more specialist applied areas such as forensic or health psychology and to develop your own research for the Individual Research Project in Psychology module.

MA Sport Business Management ‘I love Coventry – I really like the city and all it has to offer! Having completed my BA in Sport Tourism here, I was delighted to return for my MA – the University is exactly how I would want it to be! The facilities are outstanding, especially the library, and the campus is so convenient as it’s located in the city centre. Being part of a University with students from all over the world has been a really great experience, you can learn so much from each other and my confidence has grown a lot. I feel very confident speaking in large groups and making presentations, which will be a great advantage for my career. I’m hoping to work in the sports management field, and the course allowed me to choose a number of different modules that were tailored to what I would like to achieve.
