— Partick match report
HOME WINNING RECORD GOES ON Rory McAllister was the last-gasp goal hero as we maintained our amazing league record at Balmoral Stadium and made in three League One wins out of three by beating Partick Thistle in the most dramatic of fashions. The strong wind that swirled around the stadium looked like being the only winner as the two sides manfully huffed and puffed on their way to what looked set to be a 0-0 draw. That was until super-sub Rory, who had come on midway through the second period, pounced on a delightful through pass from man-of-the-match Blair Yule and rolled the ball beyond despairing Jags keeper Kieran Wright in the third minute of injury-time. Keeper Stuart McKenzie also did his bit with a remarkable save from Blair Spittal’s free-kick on the hour, as did Harry Milne, who nodded a net-bound Brian Graham shot off the line in the 91st minute. It underlined just how much of a team effort it took to secure our first ever victory over full-time opponents and keep us on top of the table. The game only went ahead after an inspection by referee David Lowe, around 2pm, because of concerns over how the howling gale and driving rain would influence proceedings. The wisdom of going ahead remained open to speculation, despite the fact the rain had at least been replaced by sunshine as kick-off approached. The impossible conditions wrecked any hope of the game living up to expectations, although it wasn’t for the want of trying by both sets of players.
08 09
Manager Paul Hartley had made one change to the starting line-up that beat Peterhead 2-0 last time out, with Adam Livingstone replacing Jamie Semple, who began the afternoon on the bench. Midfielder Hamish Ritchie, who joined us on loan from Inverurie Locos on the morning of the match, was also on the bench. The challenging weather conditions made it impossible for us to play our usual passing game. How bad things were was highlighted by the fact eight balls were lost in the bushes that run down one side of the stadium after passes were carried way off their intended targets. Partick at least managed a shot on target in the 16th minute, although McKenzie was well positioned to grab Spittal’s 16-yard effort. Our only shot of note in the half came in the 28th minute, when Wright saved Leaighton McIntosh’s effort from just inside the Partick area, after a great through pass from Mitch Megginson. Connor Scully also made an outstanding last gasp tackle to stop Mohamed Niang getting a shot in from 15-yards, otherwise there was little for the fans watching the game live on Cove Rangers TV to get too excited about.
Mitch Megginson thwarted by the Partick defence Cove’s Mitchel Megginson claims a foul after a clash with Partick Thistle defenders
Wonder Stop: Stuart McKenzie’s top class save on the hour was crucial.
The real highlight was the outstanding shift in the heart of our midfield from Yule, who won countless tackles and seemed the one man immune from seeing his passes going anywhere but a team-mate. Partick enjoyed a little more territorial advantage in the second period now that the wind seemed to be firmly behind their backs. McKenzie did well to punch Stuart Brannigan’s cross away from the head of Graham in the 49th minute. We managed to break up the park soon afterwards, with Jamie Masson playing the ball to Livingston for a low 16-yard shot that was comfortably held by Wright. McKenzie denied Partick again in the 56th minute, when he beat away James Penrice’s point blank shot, after the full-back had got on to the end of an excellent pass from Ross Docherty. Keeper McKenzie surpassed that with a world class stop in the 60th minute. Spittal used the wind to full advantage to thunder in a free-kick from 20-yards that would have gone in were it not for McKenzie acrobatically diving to deflect the ball over his crossbar.

— Partick match report
McAllister had only just come on for Livingstone, in the 68th minute, when we were forced to make another change because defender Daniel Higgins had gone down with a hamstring injury. When skipper Megginson hobbled off too, it looked to be a case of hoping we would be able to hold out for a point. We were almost denied that in the first minute of injury-time when Graham tried to curl the ball home from the edge of the area but Milne had got back to head the ball off the line. And the heroics of our left-back and keeper were rewarded two minutes later when Yule showed great skill to create space to send a pass through to McALLISTER.
The former Peterhead striker then deftly dinked the ball past Wright and it rolled on, as if in slow motion, over the line for a brilliant winning goal that kept our proud record of never surrendering an SPFL point at Balmoral Stadium intact. Cove Rangers: McKenzie, Scott Ross, Milne, Higgins (Graham 76) Strachan, Livingstone (McAllister 68), Yule, Scully, Masson, McInstosh, Megginson (Seb Ross 80) Subs: Watson, Semple, Ritchie, Brown, Demus. Partick Thistle: Wright, Penrice, Brownlee, Spittal, Bannigan, Graham, Gordon, Bremen, Niang, Foster, Docherty. Subs: McCready, Williamson, Cardle, Lyons, Reilly, Kouider-Alissa, Murray. Referee: David Lowe
Rory McAllister celebrates with his team mates after scoring the winning goal
— Reaction: Partick match Rory report McAllister
Goal hero Rory McAllister has praised teammate Blair Yule for the important part he played in our dramatic 1-0 League One victory over Partick Thistle at Balmoral Stadium. Striker Rory pounced three minutes into injury-time to give us a victory that maintained our perfect start in League One - and our proud record of never dropping a point at home since stepping up into the SPFL. But Rory, who came off the bench in the second half, admitted the quality of the through pass from midfielder Blair meant it was easy for him to claim his first league goal of the campaign “It was a touch of class from Blair,” he said. “When the ball fell to him, Blair did a clever wee shuffle with his feet to make sure he could get the pass through to me. All I had to do then was make sure I skipped the ball over the goalie. “It went over the line in slow motion, that probably had something to do with the strong wind, but it was good to see it eventually go in. It meant a great result for the club, beating a full-time club like Partick Thistle is a decent achievement.

“It was also a good day for me. I was really happy to make such an important contribution because it’s been frustrating not to be playing as much as I would like. All you can do is keep working hard in training to make sure you are ready to do as best as you can when called upon, so it’s really pleasing I managed to do that.” “It’s what I’ve done my whole career, give me chances and I’m always confident I can score. Hopefully I will be able to get a good few more goals and help to keep us at the top end of the league table.”
THE MINDSET IN THE DRESSING ROOM IS ALWAYS ‘NOBODY COMES HERE AND WINS’ Rory admitted it was tough going in a match blighted by the howling wind that swept along the length of Balmoral Stadium. He said: “It meant it was 50-50 football, the game could have gone either way. We got the big break at the end, but I feel we earned it because of the effort everyone put in. Stuart McKenzie also made an unbelievable save from a free-kick.” “From where I was you could see it was going in, I don’t know how Stuart managed to flick it over. He kept us in the game and ensured we could go on and eventually win it. It also helped us maintain our perfect record at Balmoral, which we are very proud of.” “The mindset in the dressing room is always ‘nobody comes here and wins’. We want to keep that run going for as long as we can and beating a side of Partick’s quality will certainly help on that front.”

STRIKER LEIGHTON MCINTOSH TELLS US ABOUT HIS OTHER PASSION IN LIFE - AS AN ARTIST Highly admired for his cartoon-inspired Pop Art, he is preparing for an exhibition of some of his work down in London in the new year. Leighton’s paintings have also been displayed in Dundee and Perth – and he was happy to admit he would love see them shown at Balmoral Stadium some day too.
>>>
>>> TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT YOUR LOVE OF PAINTING? It all started in my schooldays. I began by doing portraits but I’ve always had an interest in cartoons so gradually evolved into that. I love the older cartoons and bright colours and enjoy adding my own abstract spin to things. It was just a hobby to begin with, I found it was a great way to totally switch off from the pressures of playing football, particularly when I was full-time. But things gradually grew when people began to show an interest in what I was doing. I now have my own brand name - Geckor Designs - and get commissions to do paintings. I’ve sold quite a few, particular during the Covid lockdown, when a lot of people seemed keen to brighten up their homes with some of my work.
18 19
HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WERE ASKED TO DISPLAY SOME OF YOUR WORK AT EXHIBITIONS? I was obviously delighted. Like I said, it all started off as a hobby, to go from that to actually being asked to exhibit some of my work was very pleasing. I’ve now shown them in galleries in Dundee and Perthshire, with a second scheduled for Dundee at the start of next month. We also have one pencilled in for London in the new year, depending on what happens with the on-going Covid-19 crisis, of course. It’s pretty exciting but also means I’m having to spend whatever spare time I do have working to ensure I have enough completed works to show.
>>>
>>>
DO YOU HAVE ANY PLANS TO EXHIBIT YOUR PAINTINGS IN THE NORTH-EAST? That is something I would be happy to look at. I really enjoy giving people the opportunity to see what I do and the feedback from the previous exhibitions has been very positive. SHOULD WE ASK THE CHAIRMAN IF YOU CAN DISPLAY PAINTINGS AT BALMORAL STADIUM? That might be an idea! I hadn’t really though of that but I would be delighted if that did happen. ANY PARTICULAR FAVOURITES AMONG YOUR PAINTINGS? I did a series of images based on the Loony Tunes characters - like Bugs Bunny, Road Runner and Wile E Coyote - for an exhibition, I was particularly fond of those ones. Others obviously liked them too because they were all sold at the exhibition.
20 21
WOULD ANY OF YOUR COVE RANGERS TEAM-MATES MAKE A GOOD CARTOON CHARACTER? There are certainly one or two candidates! The good news for them is that’s not the sort of thing I do. Don’t get me wrong, I could easily have some fun by doing caricatures of them, but I’m far too busy doing all my other stuff. As well as painting, I’m also working with a clothing company to produce items with my artwork on them. The first range of tee-shirts sold our pretty quickly. I’m focused on all of that at the moment so the guys at Cove can rest easy.
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH HOW THINGS ARE GOING FOR YOU ON THE FOOTBALL FRONT TOO? Very much so. The manager highlighted the need for us to make a strong start because it’s going to be a shorter season than normal. It’s great we have been able to that with three great results so far. I’ve also enjoyed the role given to me by the manager. Doing well against Hibs when we played them in the League Cup helped. That gave us a lot of confidence and also showed us what we were capable of if we work hard and maintained high standards.
>>>
>>>
HAS IT BEEN EASY TO SETTLE IN AT THE CLUB? I was worried it might be more difficult because of the Covid-19 restrictions, we obviously can’t enjoy nights out, the sort of things that normally help a squad bond. The fact I already knew a lot of the lads from previous clubs has helped, as has the fact they already have a very strong team spirit at Cove. It was just a case of slotting into that and I have to say I’m as happy now as I’ve ever been in my career.

PAUL HARTL I would like to welcome the players and staff of Forfar Athletic to Balmoral Stadium for today’s league meeting. Forfar manager Stuart Malcolm and I go back a long way, we were team-mates at St Johnstone. I’ve watched footage of their 3-2 defeat to Montrose last weekend and Forfar were extremely unlucky not to take something from the game. You can be sure Stuart will have taken positives from that and will have his team well organised and ready to go again this afternoon. This will be an extremely tough game for us. It’s good that we go into it on the back of beating Partick Thistle 1-0 at Balmoral. To be honest, I would have been happy to come away with a draw in that one, especially when the terrible weather conditions are taken into consideration. We were all delighted Rory McAllister came up with a brilliant finish to give us a victory instead and maintain our astonishing record at Balmoral since we made the step up to the SPFL. It’s far from the first time we have claimed points with a late goal. That’s testament to the fitness levels of the players - and to the work done by our fitness coach, Tam Ritchie.

The last close season was difficult for the players because we were unable to meet and they had to work on staying fit on their own. So all credit to them for returning in peak condition, which meant we were able to use what little time we had to build up to this season in the best possible fashion. That’s when the value of having Tam on our coaching staff really paid off. The fact I have worked with Tam at five of my previous clubs, as a player and fellow coach, underlines how much I value his input. He’s the best in the business and it’s clear the players enjoy working with Tam too. His training sessions are extremely tough but the players know he has their best interests at heart and have done everything asked of them. The payback is we have a squad of players I would back to go toe-to-toe with anyone over 90 minutes. I have always said success only comes to those who are willing to put the work in. Every single player at the club shares that work ethic and hopefully their efforts will be rewarded over the course of the campaign. Stay safe and enjoy the game.
Paul Hartley

“STRENGTH IN DEPTH IS GOING TO BE CRUCIAL IF WE ARE TO HAVE ANY CHANCE OF CONTINUING OUR GOOD START TO THE SEASON.” You only need to look at the celebration pictures to understand how pleased all of us were to see Rory McAllister emerge as the match winner in last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Partick Thistle. There was a genuine shared joy for one of the most popular men at the club. Rory underlined how talented a striker he is by making best use of about the only chance we had in the game to secure all three points. It’s the sort of thing he has done throughout his career and emphasised just how strong our squad is at the moment. That strength in depth is going to be crucial if we are to have any chance of continuing our good start to the season. As was the case last term, everyone is going to be called upon to do their bit. While there is obviously strong competition for starting places that is matched by a genuine desire to see whoever is picked do well. It won’t have been easy for a player of Rory’s stature to start our first three league games as a substitute. The same goes for the others who were in the same position. But you never hear a dissenting word from anyone.
>>>
— Captain’s view
>>> When teams are named those not starting always do what they can to help ensure those who are picked stay fully focused on the tasks in front of them. That solid bond between us in the dressing room is going to be a huge asset in what we accept is going to a very tough campaign. Beating Partick means we are facing Forfar Athletic this afternoon in a confident mood, but we also accept that result counts for nothing once we cross that white line today. I’ve been at Cove for four years now and it’s been drilled into us since day one that you must never look any further forward than the next match. It’s great we beat Partick and also got full points off East Fife and Peterhead - but there’s still 24 league games to be played. I know it’s an old cliche, but it’s vital we take it one match at a time. It’s the teams who don’t do that who can suddenly see a good start transform into something less pleasing. I would like to end by extending a special welcome back to Balmoral Stadium to two of my former team-mates, Chris Antoniazzi and John Robertson. Chris and John played their parts to ensure last season was a memorable first one at SPFL level for our club. It was a real shame Chris’ spell with us, on loan from Aberdeen, was cut short by injury. He still managed to underline how good a player he is and I’m certain he will prove to be a big asset to Forfar over the course of this campaign. The same goes for John and you can be sure both will be eager to impress in their first game back here. CYCR! Mitch Megginson
