— Dundee match report
BLUE SEES RED Controversial red cards shown to Blair Yule and Jamie Masson ended any hope of us taking points off Dundee in our Betfred League Cup Group B clash at Dens Park. Paul McGowan gave our Championship hosts an early lead but we were still well in the tie until referee Craig Napier deemed right-back Yule’s challenge on Max Anderson, in the 41st minute, was enough to earn him his marching orders and Dundee a penalty kick. Former Scotland and Rangers star Charlie Adam missed from the spot, but playing more than half of the game a man down against full-time opponents - was always going to be a big ask. Napier made that task nigh on impossible when he also sent Masson off, early in the second half, after he appeared to clash bodies with Max Anderson. It was a night the match official won’t look back on with much satisfaction. All credit to the nine men though, they kept at it and even came close to equalising on a couple of occasions. The fact it took goals inside the last five minutes, from Danny Mullen and Adam (from another penalty) to secure things for Dundee underlined just how gallant an effort it was from our lads. As expected, manager Paul Hartley had shuffled his pack to give some more of the squad game time, with Seb Ross, Jordon Brown, Adam Livingstone and Jamie Semple all in from the start. Dundee’s fifth minute opener came when Declan McDaid cut in from the right touch-line then squared the ball across to McGOWAN who rifled a 14 yard shot into the top corner of the net, to keeper Stuart McKenzie’s left. Adam then found Danny Mullen with an excellent cross field pass. The striker darted into the area but McKenzie stood up well to save his 16-yard shot. Adam also tried his luck with a 25 yard free-kick but McKenzie made a comfortable diving save. Scott Ross attempted to take the spectacular route to goal
08 09
in the 13th minute, when he had a go from just inside his own half. Dundee keeper Jack Hamilton was relieved to see the ball drop down just behind his crossbar. We had a strong penalty shout rejected a minute later when Jordan McGhee appeared to block a shot from Brown with one of his arms. Despite appeals from our lads, referee Napier was content to award only a corner. Dundee’s next chance came when Adam was given too much space to hit a 30 yard shot over the crossbar. Brown came close to equalising in the 23rd minute with a powerful 20 yard drive that Hamilton was happy to beat clear. Jamie Masson then fed the ball inside to Mitch Megginson but his ambitions effort from 25 yards went well wide of the Dundee goal. It was end-to-end stuff, with Dundee’s McDaid hammering a shot wide just 30 seconds later. Adam was much closer with a low shot from a 19 yard free-kick that sped just beyond McKenzie’s right post. The best move so far came from us in the 35th minute. Masson exchanged passes with Seb Ross as he darted through the middle then passed to Megginson and Hamilton had to make a great diving save to keep the skipper’s low 18yard shot out of his net.
Mitch Megginson thwarted by the Partick defence Cove’s Mitchel Megginson claims a foul after a clash with Partick Thistle defenders
Referee Napier handed Dundee their significant advantage when he showed Yule a straight red card after he challenged Anderson at the edge of our area. It was debatable if it was even in the box, but Napier was convinced, so also awarded a penalty to the Dark Blues. Adam missed the spot-kick, firing his effort against the outside of McKenzie’s left post but it was clear it was going to tough going for us from then on. We were forced to shore up our defence for the restart, with Ross Graham on for Semple. Any hope of a comeback was killed off when Napier also showed Masson a red for a challenge on Marshall, in the 54th minute. It looked as if the ref was reaching for a yellow card and Masson was understandably upset when the match official also gave him his marching orders. It’s understood the ref opted for a red instead of a yellow after taking advice from one of his assistants, which will only compound the pain felt by Masson. Despite being two men down, we dug deep and still created chances. Livingstone had a powerful shot from the edge of the area saved by Hamilton.
10 11
— Dundee match report The Dundee keeper then gifted us an indirect free-kick, after dropping the ball then picking it. Brown knocked the kick short to Megginson and his low 14 yard shot went inches wide of Hamilton’s right post. We brought Connor Scully and Hamish Ritchie on for Brown and Seb Ross in the 67th minute. Rory McAllister and Broque Watson replaced Megginson and McIntosh three minutes later. Striker McAllister then saw his 25-yard free-kick cannon off the Dundee defensive wall as the home side hung on to their lead. Dundee finally made the game safe when Adam lofted the ball forward to MULLEN and he managed to squeeze a shot home from the edge of the six yard box with five minutes left. With two minutes to go, the Dark Blues were awarded their
second spot-klick of the night, for a foul by Graham on Mullen. ADAM scored this time but the final scoreline was very harsh on us after having battled so long with two men less. Dundee: Hamilton, Kerr, McGhee (Hamilton 88), Byrne (Robertson 75), Mullen (Wilkie 88), McGowan, McDaid, Elliot, Marshall, Anderson (Blacklock 88) Adam.Subs: Ferrie, L Strachan, D Strachan. Rory McAllister celebrates with his team mates after scoring the winning goal
— Reaction: Partick match Rory report McAllister
Rory McAllister is hoping to keep up his good form when we round off our involvement in the Betfred League Cup against Forfar Athletic at Balmoral Stadium today at 3pm. Neither of us can qualify for the next stage, but striker Rory says that won’t lessen his desire to be involved. “There is no such thing as a meaningless game to me,” said Rory, who has netted in last week’s 3-0 League 1 win over the Loons and also had a hand in the other two goals, which were claimed by skipper Mitch Megginson. “We will be doing our best to win to put ourselves in the best possible frame of mind for next week’s league visit to Falkirk.” “There will also be lads out there getting more minutes desperate to impress the manager in the hope that they can stay in the side. I’m certainly hoping I get to feature. “ “I really enjoyed the chance to start against Forfar last time and I want to play more football to get my match fitness back up to where I would like it to be. It would also be great if I got another chance to play alongside Mitch.”

“We work well together because we have contrasting styles and I’m confident we would be able to pose a goal threat again. The midweek 3-0 defeat by Dundee at Dens Park officially killed off any hope of us finishing in the top two in Group B to qualify for the next stage. Having Blair Yule and Jamie Masson harshly sent-off in that game didn’t help, but Rory insists the loss to the Dark Blues hasn’t dented confidence at Balmoral.”
“I REALLY ENJOYED THE CHANCE TO START AGAINST FORFAR LAST TIME AND I WANT TO PLAY MORE FOOTBALL” Rory said: “The two red cards made it a bit of a false result in the end. Both of them were extremely harsh but we can take a lot out of the fact we were still able to make it tough for Dundee, despite being down to nine men. It’s past now though, these League Cup games were always seen as a bit of bonus and an opportunity to test ourselves against full-time sides. Like I said, we will be doing all that we can to at least finish with a win ahead of getting back to league action, which has always been more important to us.” Today’s match will be screened live on Cove Rangers TV, with our coverage kicking off from 2.30pm.

We are delighted to confirm manager Paul Hartley and goalkeeper Stuart McKenzie have been named as the SPFL League One Manager and Player of the month for October. Paul and Stuart were rewarded for their contributions to what was a perfect league record for us during the course of last month. We kicked off our first League One campaign with a 3-1 home victory over East Fife, beating Peterhead 2-0 at Balmoor Stadium and completing the run with a 1-0 win over Partick Thistle at Balmoral Stadium. Manager Paul said: “The award is recognition of the hard work everyone has put in so far, I’m delighted for them as much as for myself. You don’t win these sort of awards on your own, we really do work as a team. I really appreciate being able to work with so many good people and with such a talented group of players.” Stuart made a key contribution to all three league victories. He made crucial early saves in the victories over East Fife and Peterhead. The former Montrose keeper was also praised for the outstanding stop he made, from a free-kick, during the narrow triumph over Partick Thistle. Stuart’s month also including an astonishing performance in our Betred League Cup clash away to Brora Rangers. He saved two penalties and then scored the winner as we won a dramatic shoot-out 6-5 to claim an extra point after the tie had ended 2-2. Manager Paul said: “We are all delighted to see Stuart being recognised in this manner. His contribution often goes unheralded but we all appreciate having a goalkeeper of his quality in our squad. The award has been well earned because Stuart, like the team, has made a very strong start to the season.” Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Paul and Stuart for picking up the awards, which are chosen by an independent panel of journalists selected by the SPFL.

PAUL HARTL Once again, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the players and officials of Forfar Athletic for our meeting in the Betfred League Cup. As was the case when we met in the league a week ago, Forfar will make it extremely tough for us. We can’t qualify for the next stage of this competition, but there is no such thing as a meaningless game in my eyes. I want to win every time we go out there so will be looking for the players to maintain the high standards shown in the league so far. Keeping up our fine record in games here at Balmoral Stadium will be an added incentive. We also want to get the three points to finish as high in our Betfred Group as we possibly can. I said from the outset that we regarded this as a bit of a bonus competition that would be used to give as many of our squad as possible some game time. Don’t get me wrong, we also had a burning desire to progress to the last 16. That hasn’t happened but it wasn’t for the want of trying. We ran a very strong Hibs side close in our first game, we created chances and deserved to take more from that encounter.

It was not taking our chances that proved costly when we drew away to Brora Rangers, although we did at least claim an extra point by winning the penalty shoot-out. That was followed by last Tuesdays 3-0 defeat by Dundee at Dens Park. We were hampered by having Blair Yule and Jamie Masson sent off in that match before an hour had been played and I said at the time that I felt both decisions were harsh. Having since seen video footage of the game I stand by that, but we now have to move on. We can at least be encouraged by the way we played at Dens, before and after the red cards. I was really pleased with some of our passing play in the first half, despite having lost an early goal we were unfortunate not to go in at least level at the interval. Finding ourselves down to nine men made our task even tougher but I can only praise the lads for the way they went about things in the second period. They stuck together and organised themselves very well. We knew Dundee would have more of the ball but we still created chances and were well in it until conceding two goals in the final minutes. The players could have given us no more but it’s on to this next match now, though. We will obviously need to make some changes today because Blair and Jamie are unavailable, but as a said, using as much of the squad as possible was always the plan. I will be looking for whoever plays this afternoon to show how eager they are to remain involved when we return to league action. Stay safe and enjoy the game.

WE ARE ALL REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS AFTERNOON’S REMATCH WITH FORFAR ATHLETIC... ...It took our best performance of the season so far to get the better of them in last week’s League 1 meeting at Balmoral Stadium. We know we will have to try and replicate that if we are to finish our Betfred League Cup campaign with a win. It would have been nice to go into the tie still in with a chance of progressing in the next round of the competition, but that won’t reduce the competitive approach from both sets of players this afternoon. Forfar, like ourselves, will be eager to get a positive result ahead of returning to league action next weekend. Our hopes of making the last 16 ended with the 3-0 defeat away to Dundee in midweek. Having Blair Yule and Jamie Masson sent-off made what was already a tough task even more difficult. I felt both decisions were extremely harsh, but we took encouragement from the way we performed when down to nine men. We kept a great shape, continued to play the ball and created chances. I thought I had equalised when Jordon Brown played an indirect free-kick short to me in the Dundee box. I drilled the shot as low and as hard as I could and it was disappointing to see it creep just wide of the post.
>>>
— Captain’s view
>>> It would have been interesting to see how the match turned out had we been able to pull it back to 1-1. Unfortunately, Dundee then went on to seal their win with two late goals but the way we made them work for the three points was an indication of the strong team spirit we have at our club. We never give up and give our all for each other and that will continue to be the case as we look to continue our strong start in League 1. A victory over Forfar this afternoon would certainly be a boost ahead of what we know are going to be two extremely testing league games on the road, at Falkirk and against Airdrieonians. Falkirk were my pre-season tips to win our division because they are full-time and added well to their squad in the close season. Airdrie are also going to be up there, so we know we are in for two testing games but if we want to be up at the top end challenging over the course of the season it’s a task we have to be willing to take on. For now though, it’s all about facing Forfar and doing what we can to end our involvement in the League Cup with three points. CYCR! Mitch Megginson
