CLYDE 1 COVE RANGERS 1

— Clyde match report

Clyde snatch the equaliser A point was scant reward for the performance we put in against the Bully Wee in our League One clash at Broadwood Stadium. Despite having to go with a squad depleted by injuries - and playing just 48 hours after a taxing Scottish Cup showdown with Rangers - we dominated possession for long spells and eventually went ahead in the 75th minute, thanks to a cracking strike from Connor Scully. Unfortunately former Aberdeen and Dundee United striker David Goodwillie came off the bench to snatch the equaliser within three minutes to deny us the victory our lads deserved for their efforts. Manager Paul Hartley had planned to make changes to cope with the hectic programme. Unfortunately, some of them were forced because skipper Mitch Megginson, midfielder Jamie Masson and striker Leighton McIntosh all missed out because of the injuries they sustained at Ibrox. Ryan Strachan and Blair Yule, who were rested on Sunday, were among the six to come in, with the former taking over as skipper in the absence of Megginson. Cumbernauld, remarkably, was snow free and bathed in spring sunshine by kick-off time, in total contrast to the weather when the squad departed from Aberdeen.

08 09

It was still chilly in the shadows thought as the home side started strongly and went close in the third minute, when Lewis Jamieson got in behind the defence to send a chip from the edge of the area wide. Marky Munro’s cross from wide on the right also looked to be sneaking in at the far post until Stuart McKenzie stretched to knock the ball behind for a corner. Mike McGlinchey took it and his cross found Craig Howie, who powered an eight yard header off target. Once we got into our stride after that, we looked by far the better side. We seemed to have a strong penalty claim in the eighth minute when Seb Ross was swept crashing by home keeper Dave Mitchell as he attempted to latch on to a pass from Blair Yule but the referee decided the challenge was fair. Howie had a better chance for Clyde in the 15th minute from another McGlinchey corner but sent a poor header well wide from 10-yards. Scully set up our next chance with a pass to Rory McAllister but his shot from a tight angle on the left was held by Mitchell.

— Clyde match report

10 11

Fraser Fyvie was just inches away from opening the scoring in the 25th minute. His free kick from wide on the left evaded everyone as it went inches wide of the far post. Fyvie then played the ball inside to Scully and his 25-yard shot went narrowly beyond the other post. We claimed for another penalty in the 36th minute when Ross Graham fell inside the area as he went to meet Yule’s cross but the referee waved play on again. The best chance of the half came our way in the 39th minute. Fyvie played a fine pass through the middle to McAllister and the striker turned cleverly just inside the Clyde area before seeing his powerful shot beaten away by Mitchell. If points were awarded for possession, we would have bagged all three for the way we went about dominating the second period. Fyvie found Seb Ross with another excellent through ball in the 58th minute and his shot from 18-yards was held by Mitchell. Clyde were screaming for a penalty on the hour when Jamieson’s shot cannoned off one of our defenders but the referee waved play on. Munro was booked in the 68th minute for a foul on McAllister. Fyvie took the free kick but his 20-yard shot went well over the crossbar. We had been pinning Clyde back deep inside their own half for most of the second period and were rewarded with a wonderful opener in the 75th minute.

— Clyde match report

A sweeping move forward ended with McAllister laying the ball back to Scully and he placed his shot from the edge of the area well beyond the reach of the diving Mitchell. Clyde equalised in the 78th minute. Goodwillie played a pass to fellow substitute Barry Cuddihy in the area and his shot was cleared off the line by Strachan. Unfortunately, the ball eventually fell back into the path of Goodwillie and he lashed it home from the edge of the six yard box. Kevin Hanratty almost put us ahead again in the 80th minute. His curling shot from the edge of the area was going in until Mitchell dived full-length to push it wide of the post. Scully also hammered a volley a couple of feet wide as we continued to look for the winner. Goodwillie almost pinched all three points with an eight yard shot that forced McKenzie to dive full length to save. We at least remain unbeaten in the league since returning from the latest shut-down but we will feel hard done by not to have gone back up the road with a victory.

— Richie Fraser tribute

A tribute to Richie fraser

16 17

Everyone at Cove Rangers was saddened to learn of the recent death of our former player Richie Fraser. The 36-year-old - who lived in Portlethen with his wife, Laura, and children Ava, 11, and Rhys, 3 - was described as “inspirational” by his family for the way he dealt with being diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2019. Richie joined us after coming through the youth ranks at Aberdeen and played under then manager John Sheran in the early 2000s. He also played for local amateur sides Cove Thistle and Kincorth AFC. Present Kit Manager, Adrian Thomson, was in charge of our youth side and signed Richie when he left the Dons. Adrian said: “Richie wasn’t just a very, very good footballer; he was also a really nice man. He helped us win the Highland Youth League before going on to play in the first team under John. Richie was well liked and popular with everyone he met. He trained well and had a great winning mentality and I really enjoyed working with him. Richie will be sadly missed by many people.” Richie’s private funeral is due to take place on Monday. The funeral cortege will pass Pittodrie Stadium around noon for anyone who wishes to pay their respects. The thoughts of everyone at the club at this sad time are with Richie’s family and friends.

nor scully Connor Scully was delighted to finally score an SPFL goal in our 1-1 draw with Clyde at Broadwood Stadium. Connor finished a slick move by latching on to a lay-off from Rory McAllister to fire home from just outside the Clyde area in the 75th minute. Unfortunately for us, seasoned professional David Goodwillie replied three minutes later to give the Bully Wee a share of the spoils. It was a still a landmark moment for midfielder Connor to net his first goal in 12 starts in League One after drawing a blank in all 28 of his League Two outings last term. Connor said: “I would obviously have preferred my goal was the winner but it still meant a lot to me. I should maybe have scored a second as well with a shot that just crept wide of the post. It was still great to get one though because it was annoying me that I hadn’t managed to score since we made the step up from the Highland League. I used to set myself a target of at least 10 a season but accepted that might be more difficult at the higher level. In my own defence, I was asked to play more of an anchor role in midfield last season, which limited my opportunities to get forward. But the manager said I could do that against Clyde as long as I made sure I had cover. I was happy to accept that opportunity and delighted when Rory laid the ball back perfectly for me to hit.

— Player reaction: Connor Scully

The goal was even more important because we had several key players more known for scoring missing through injury. When the team is in that situation it’s important the rest of us try to step up and do our bit. Hopefully there will be more goals to come before the end of the campaign.” Connor has dedicated his first SPFL strike to former Cove Rangers player Richie Fraser, who recently passed away at the age of 36. Connor said: “I played in a few charity games with Richie and saw him regularly going about in Cove. We had many long chats about the club and he always showed an interest in how my career was going. Richie was a really nice bloke and my thoughts are with his family at what is a very sad time for them.”

Connor also put in a tireless shift in the middle of the park against Clyde, despite the fact it was his second full 90 minutes inside 48 hours. He had also done his bit to keep Rangers are bay during the previous Sunday’s Scottish Cup third round tie at Ibrox Stadium. Connor said: “It was tough going towards the end of the second game, but I also loved every minute. I feel I showed in my performance against Clyde that I had learned a lot from playing against Rangers midfielders Glen Kamara and Steven Davis. It’s things like their movement and positional play, they always seemed to be able to find space to make passes and to be in the right place to make tackles. I took a lot off seeing them working close up and hope that experience can help me become an even better player. I’m always looking to improve because I know that’s the only way to ensure I remain part of the plans at Cove.”

PAUL HARTL I will start by extending a warm welcome to the players and officials of Dumbarton FC on what is their first visit to Balmoral Stadium. Our away clash with them in League One was extremely close fought and I expect this afternoon’s meeting to be the same. There are simply no easy games in this league, as was proved by the results in midweek. Every side is capable of causing each other problems, which means the battle to finish in the top five before the league splits is likely to go right to the wire. We are just happy to be in the mix. I said right at the start of the season that, because we were new to the division, our aim was just to get as many points as we could and see where that takes us. Doing that is particularly tough with the schedule as hectic as it has been since we returned from the latest lockdown. I have to praise the players for the way they have coped with the demands put upon them. It was particularly challenging for them over the last week, when he had to face Rangers and Clyde away inside 48 hours.

We picked up injuries at Ibrox, which meant I had to make six changes to the side that started against Clyde. Given the circumstances, it was pleasing to see us dominate the majority of that match and come away with a point. Midfielder Jamie Masson was one of those absent at Broadwood Stadium and it has since been confirmed he will require surgery to the ankle injury suffered against Rangers and will miss the rest of the season. It’s a big blow to us, especially coming on the back of the news Harry Milne is also out for the rest of the season. They have been key players for us down the left side of the pitch. It’s up to others to come in and do their best to ensure Jamie and Harry aren’t missed and I’m confident we have players who will do that. Stay safe and enjoy the game. Paul Hartley

AT THE TIME OF WRITING I’M HOPEFUL THAT I WILL BE FIT ENOUGH TO FACE MY OLD CLUB DUMBARTON THIS AFTERNOON. I was unable to play when we travelled to play them in December so it would be extremely disappointing if I missed out again. I will always appreciate the part Dumbarton played in helping revive my career after I left Aberdeen. They gave me the opportunity to get back playing, I actually featured in every match during my two years with The Sons. I enjoyed playing for the management duo then - Ian Murray and Jack Ross - and believe they helped to improve me as a player. It would be nice to actually get the opportunity to lead Cove out to face them this afternoon and I have my fingers crossed that can happen. No matter who plays, we know we are in for yet another tough game. When you look at how close the League One table is it could be argued it is the most competitive of all the SPFL divisions. With some having games in hand, every club still has a chance of making the top five by the time of the split, it’s going to be really interesting to see how things work out. Our aim, of course, is to finish as high as we can and making sure we make home advantage account could well be the key to that. While I expect to be back from injury pretty quickly, everyone at

the club was disappointed to learn that Jamie Masson’s season is over because of the ankle injury he suffered at Ibrox. That came on the back of it previously being confirmed that Harry Milne will be out for the rest of the campaign too. Injuries are hard enough to handle at any time but it will be even tougher for Jamie and Harry because theirs have come on the back of a period when we were all unable to play football at all for several months. It hardly needs to be said that we all wish Jamie and Harry speedy recoveries and look forward to seeing them back out on the field next season. In Jamie’s case, the enforced rest period will at least give him the time he needs to figure out how to actually play Call of Duty! Being injured meant I had to be content with watching our midweek 1-1 draw with Clyde via a live stream on my computer. I’ve never been a great spectator because I get annoyed at not being out there helping the team, but I thought we played very well and deserved to win the game. I was particularly pleased to see Connor Scully score his first SPFL goal at Broadwood Stadium. He had been getting a wee bit of stick for not having found the net since we made the step up from the Highland League, but only in a playful manner. Connor is a player everyone in the squad admires because we know he is Cove through and through. He has embraced the opportunity to play at SPFL level after spending his whole career with the club and you see by the way he plays with a smile on his face that it means a lot to him. Connor epitomises what being a Cove player is about, he’s a local lad living the dream and I have no doubt now that he’s ended that goal drought more will follow. CYCR! Mitch Megginson
