cinch League One Saturday October 16th @ Bayview Stadium

EAST FIFE 4 COVE RANGERS 2

— East Fife Match Report

EAST FIFE earn THE THREE POINTS We paid a heavy price for some very poor defending as East Fife secured all three points in our cinch League One clash at Bayview Stadium. First half goals from Aaron Steele, Kyle Connell and Scott Mercer proved too much of a hurdle for us to overcome. We looked to have raised our hopes when Robbie Leitch pulled a goal back right at the start of the second period – but those were blown away again when Connell claimed his second of the game within two minutes. In fairness to the players, we went on to dominate possession and forced home keeper Jude Smith to make saves. Morgyn Neill also pulled another goal back, from a header, but the damage had already been done during those disastrous first 48 minutes or so of a match to forget. Shay Logan and Iain Vigurs returned after being rested the previous weekend. There was also a start for midfielder Jamie Masson, with Harry Milne and Blair Yule absent because of injury.

— East Fife Match Report

12 13

We started brightly, with Connor Scully meeting Smith’s punched clearance, from a Masson corner, to hit a powerful drop-volley that was on the way in until it was blocked by a defender. But from the 12th minute, when East Fife scored the opener, it made grim viewing for the small but loyal band of Cove fans who had made the trek to Methil. The goal came from a corner that only came about because Stuart McKenzie was forced to make an excellent save from Connell, after he had been allowed to break clear through the middle. Connor McManus took the kick, from the left, and his cross should have been cut out before it reached Steele, who rose at the back post to score with a close range header. We were unlucky not to equalise within two minutes, when Vigurs sent a corner over from the right and the ball broke to Leitch. Home keeper Smith did well to block the midfielder’s net-bound shot to safety with his legs. It was 2-0 in the 16th minute, when slack play in midfield led to the ball landing at the feet of Connell. The East Fife man was also given far too much space, but made the best of it by lashing a spectacular 25yard shot in off the underside of the crossbar. Smith rescued East Fife again in the 34th minute, when he beat away Masson’s powerful shot, from a tight angle on the left. The third goal came from a controversially awarded free-kick, after Connell tumbled to the turf while Scott Ross challenged him from behind.

— East Fife Match Report

It looked to be a harsh decision and referee Scott Lambie then sparked a reaction from some our players by ordering the defensive wall to retreat a distance that appeared far more than the required 10-yards. Lambie then booked Ross and Fraser Fyvie and East Fife also brought on former Cove player Daniel Higgins, for the injured Ross Dunlop, before the kick could be taken. The long delay didn’t bother Mercer though. He lashed home a wonderful 22-yard free-kick that gave McKenzie no chance as it bulleted into the net. We looked to be back in it when we scored just 50 seconds after the restart. Mitch Megginson played a pass through to Leitch and his shot, from the edge of the area, flew past the diving Smith. Unfortunately, we then gifted East Fife another goal within two minutes. Mercer should never have been allowed to dance in from the right, almost on the byline, before squaring the ball for Connell to hammer home from close range. Our lads at least had a go at saving the game. We were unlucky in the 55th minute, when Masson passed the ball to Megginson and his shot was kept out by an excellent save from Smith. McAllister was also just inches away from getting on to the rebound before it was booted clear, from the edge of the six yard box.

— East Fife Match Report

16 17

Leitch should have done better than send a free header wide, from a Vigurs corner, in the 64th minute. Defender Neill pulled a goal back, in the 73rd minute, when he met another Vigurs corner and netted with a downward header from inside the East Fife six-yard box. Our best move of the game came in the 74th minute, when a series of passes forward ended with McAllister laying the ball off to Megginson and his powerful shot was finger-tipped over the crossbar by Smith. Scully then crossed from the right to McAllister, but Smith was well placed to save the striker’s deft flick at the front post. Substitute Ola Adeyemo also set McAllister up when he headed the ball on in the last minute, but Smith saved his 16-yard shot as well to ensure East Fife held out for the win they deserved.

East Fife: J Smith, C Higgins, Dunlop (D Higgins 43), McManus, Slattery, Wallace (Brown 88), Mercer, Watt, Steele, Newton, Connell (Semple 79). Subs: Gallacher, Denholm, Smith. Cove Rangers: McKenzie, Neill, Scully, Ross (Strachan 46), Megginson, Masson (Adeyemo 58), McAllister, Vigurs, Leitch (Robertson 66), Fyvie, Logan. Subs: McIntosh, Anderson, Gourlay. Referee: Scott Lambie.

— East Fife Reaction

“ No matter who you are playing you have to earn the right to win.”

18 19

Cove Rangers right-back Shay Logan pulled no punches when he spoke to the media after our 4-2 cinch League One defeat by East Fife at Bayview Stadium. Shay was furious with our team performance, particularly in the first half, during which we conceded three goals. Shay said: “You can’t start a game like that and expect to win. When you are 3-0 down at half-time you know you have a huge job on your hands. Give yourself a 3-0 deficit against any team and you probably aren’t going to come out of it with anything. When we scored at the start of the second half we had a chance - but then conceded another within two minutes of that. That simply wasn’t good enough from us, it was rubbish. You won’t see defending like that in a Sunday League game.” Shay continued: “You have to earn the right to win and we certainly didn’t do that. We didn’t stick to the game plan in the first half. We had followed a certain game plan the previous three weeks, but this time, in the first half, we just didn’t do it and we got punished. No matter who you are playing you have to earn the right to win. Bottom of the league, top of the league, it doesn’t matter, if you don’t do your jobs right you will get punished. Even though we had most of the possession - and were the better team overall - we got what we deserved. We beat them 5-2 at home earlier in the season, so we know we can score goals against them. The gaffer said during the interval that the aim was to come out, score the first goal, then take it on from there. Then that happens (East Fife scoring their fourth) and it just sets us back again. It wasn’t good enough, all over the pitch. We just have to dust ourselves off and look to prove we can do better in our next game. You are going to play good games and lose and play rubbish and win. That’s just football - but as I said if you want to win you are going to have to earn the right. We need to take it as a learning curve and look to do a lot better in our next game.”

— Ian McIntosh Interview

IAN MCINTO As the Fanzone at Balmoral Stadium finally reopens today we felt it was the ideal time to catch up with Ian McIntosh, secretary and treasurer of the official Cove Rangers Supporters Club.

20 21

— Ian McIntosh Interview

How happy are you to see the Fanzone back in operation? I’m absolutely delighted. The Fanzone was a massive attraction to supporters when Balmoral Stadium first opened. It’s a great place to meet pals as a well as opposing supporters to enjoy a few drinks and a bit of pre-match banter. It really enhances the match day experience and I’m really happy it is available to us again. What do you like most about the Fanzone? When Cove Rangers played in the Highland League we were able to meet rival supporters, home and away, and created friendships that have lasted away from football. We are having to make new friends now that we are playing at SPFL level and the Fanzone was playing a huge part in that. It’s the ideal place to introduce ourselves to the fans of clubs who had never been to Cove before. We’ve also had a lot of interest from families wanting to come to more games, the Fanzone will help on that front because it gives them somewhere warm and safe to take their children beforehand. The interest in Cove Rangers is growing all of the time, and not just from people based in the north-east. Two of the latest to join our ranks are Irene and Jake Byrne, who stay in Forfar. Our bus picks them up at Dundee on the road to every away game. It’s great they will now be able to socialise with fellow fans when they travel up the road to Balmoral as well. I’m sure we will continue to attract new supporters because we have the Fanzone at the stadium. It’s a real asset to the supporters club and the football club.

— Ian McIntosh Interview

>>>

What has it been like finally being allowed back into games this season? Fantastic. There is nothing to beat watching live football. The club did as well as it could to help compensate for the fact we couldn’t get in because of the Covid pandemic. The live television coverage was very good, even though the modern automatic cameras used by many of the clubs now aren’t perfect. We all heard about the time fans watching a game from Inverness were upset because the automatic camera ended up tracking the bald head of one of the assistant referees instead of the ball. We are lucky Charlie Allan’s head was never in focus at Balmoral! Joking aside, we appreciate the club making the effort to create CRTV for our benefit. Watching games on the telly or a computer was better than not seeing Cove Rangers at all. But it will never get close to the excitement felt when you actually walk into a stadium ahead of a match. It’s still been a bit strange at times because of the covid regulations. When we have travelled away we have been segregated from the fans of our opponents, which isn’t ideal. As I said, having a laugh with them is one of the most enjoyable parts of supporting Cove Rangers. There is never any trouble, everyone is there for a good day out, no matter the result although we obviously enjoy it even more when we win! We’ve gone along with whatever was asked of us because we are just happy to be attending games again. Many of our members have now been double vaccinated, just incase that is a requirement for us to attend games in the future. We have also been offering help and advice to some of the more elderly fans who maybe don’t have mobile phones, so need to sort out paper proof that they have been vaccinated. It’s an inconvenience we are happy to cope with if it will guarantee we don’t miss out on any games.

24 25

What’s your assessment of the season so far? Things are going really well. None of us got too upset by the defeat at East Fife last week. You have to expect there will be set-backs now that we are playing at SPFL level. When anyone does have a wee moan I’m always quick to remind them that our players are only semi-professional, they have to work for a living too.

We won League Two in our first season and went close to gaining promotion in our second, despite all the problems caused by the Covid pandemic. Even after losing last weekend, we are still sitting in second spot, so there is every chance we could be involved in the fight for promotion again. We are in a good place and I can only see better things ahead for us.@gmail.

We have done pretty well since coming into the SPFL when you take that into account.

PAUL HARTL I would like to welcome you to Balmoral Stadium for this afternoon’s cinch League One game against Clyde. We are obviously hoping for a positive reaction to what was a very disappointing result for us a week ago, away to East Fife. It was very unlike us, but served as a timely reminder that you need to be on your game every week in this division. Clyde didn’t have the best of results last weekend either, so you can be sure they will be coming here determined to bounce back too. The players really don’t need me to tell them it means we are in for another really tough 90 minutes. I’ve been encouraged by the response we have seen at training this week. The mood has been very positive and it’s clear the players are eager for the opportunity to show what happened to us against East Fife was just a one off. Hopefully that will be reflected by our performance this afternoon. Stay safe and enjoy the game. Paul Hartley

“ The only good thing about having a bad day in football is that you know you normally don’t have too long to wait for an opportunity to get it out of your system.” None of us were happy with the result, or performance, when we lost 4-2 to East Fife last weekend. It was one of the poorest team displays I’ve been a part of since joining Cove. We gave away cheap goals and didn’t create enough chances at the other end and got what we deserved. The most annoying part of it is we knew a good number of Cove Rangers fans had made the trip to Bayview Stadium to cheer us on. We could hear you doing your best to get us going and I’m sorry that, on this occasion, we didn’t respond. I’m sure you will make yourselves heard again today and we will be doing everything we can to give you a better reward for that backing. Losing to East Fife, who are in bottom spot at the moment, was a timely reminder of just how competitive League One is this season. Everyone is capable of beating everyone else because there is real quality in every squad.

It’s why nobody really needs to tell us we will need to improve greatly if we are to do better against Clyde this afternoon. Even more so with their attack being led by David Goodwillie, one of the best strikers in the SPFL, who has been a bit of a thorn in our flesh in the past. He will punish us if we allow our standards to slip again. It’s good that we are at least looking to bounce back here at Balmoral Stadium. Our home record since stepping up to the SPFL has been excellent. That’s because the surface at Balmoral Stadium suits the way we like to play passing football. But we will only be able to do that if we apply ourselves better than we did a week ago. CYCR! Mitch Megginson
