QUEEN OF THE SOUTH 1 COVE RANGERS 0 SPFL Trust Trophy Tue March 1st @ Balmoral Stadium

— Queen of the South Match Report

frustrating result for cove Our dreams of reaching the SPFL Trust Trophy final were shattered by Aiden Fitzpatrick’s first minute strike for The Doonhamers on a night of frustration at Balmoral Stadium. We were virtually camped in our opponents’ half of the pitch after that – and created chance after chance – but just lacked the composure needed take one of them and save ourselves. The defeat will be a sore for our players to take because they gave it their all, with Blair Yule in particular having one of his best games in a Cove Rangers shirt. But no matter what they did, they just couldn’t get the break needed in front of goal. Queens keeper Joshua Rae did his bit with a series of brilliant saves, with one in the first half – from Fraser Fyvie – absolutely unbelievable. BBC Alba, who showed the game live, awarded their man-of-the-match to Queen’s forward Ruben Soares Junior. Failing to go for keeper Rae – or Yule – must have baffled their viewers.

12 13

If it were a boxing match, the men from Dumfries would have been forced to throw the towel in long before end. This, however, was a game of football in which goals count, so you have to give the visitors credit for getting the one they needed then placing their bodies on the line to protect it to ensure they will face either Kilmarnock or Raith Rovers in the final at the beginning of April. Injuries to Shay Logan and Ryan Strachan, Harry Milne’s suspension and the fact Kai Fotheringham was cup-tied meant we could only list three outfield players on the bench. A fair number of the 728 crowd were still making their way into the stadium when Queens took the lead, with less than a minute on the clock. Soares Junior collected a long ball out of the Queen’s defence, near the half way line, then sent Fitzpatrick racing clear on the right with a perfectly timed pass. The former Norwich City winger advanced into the area before lashing a 14-yard shot high into the net to give the Championship side a dream start. In fairness to our lads, they immediately went about the task of trying to bounce back and Rory McAllister was unfortunate to see a shot from a tight angle on the right bundled wide of the post by Rae. Joshua Todd had a great chance to score a second for Queen’s in the 14th minute when he broke clear from the half way line, but his shot from the edge of the area was well saved by Kyle Gourlay.

— Queen of the South Match Report

Keeper Rae was the hero for Queens again in the 15th minute, when he dived full length to deflect Fyvie’s 22-yard net-bound shot wide for a corner. Our next chance came from a well-worked corner routine. Fyvie played the ball in short from the left to Mitch Megginson, who had raced out to collect the pass. The striker then immediately whipped a cross over to Mark Reynolds, but he couldn’t connect correctly with his header from 10-yards and the ball bounced up off the ground into the arms of Rae. Megginson’s powerful 19-yard shot was also held by Rae as we remained camped in and around the Queens’ penalty area. The next opportunity, in the 22nd minute, came from Yule’s fine right wing cross that McAllister could only head wide from 14-yards. Queen’s broke forward almost immediately and Alistair Roy should have done better than send a 12-yard header over the bar after being set up by Calvin McGrory. If ever there was a sign that it wasn’t going to be our night, it was in the 25th minute. Megginson left Rae for dead with a shot from just inside the area, but the ball rebounded to safety off the inside of the keeper’s right post. Fyvie immediately latched on to the rebound and looked to have scored from seven yards until Rae stretched a leg out to clear the ball with a wonder save. We kept at it though, with Robbie Leitch only just off target with a powerful 16-yard shot after he had collected a pass from Megginson. If keeper Rae wasn’t making saves it was his defenders who were doing well to block efforts, as Megginson found out in the 40th minute.

>>>

14 15

— Queen of the South Match Report

That rebound fell to McAllister, but he was denied the chance to shoot when Rae made a brave save at his feet. The pattern was exactly the same in the second half, which began with Rae diving to hold a 16-yard effort from Megginson. Vigurs then took a corner from the right and his cross reached McAllister, but his eight yard header crept just wide of the target. Rae excelled again in the 53rd minute, when he dived full length to push away a raging drive from Leitch that looked to be heading for the top corner. Just after the hour, it was Megginson’s turn to be denied again, when he turned cleverly before seeing his 14-yard shot saved by Rae. Soares Junior had the chance to increase Queens’ lead in the 64th minute. He looked to be at least a yard offside when the ball was played through to him, but the striker was allowed to go on with the Cove defenders in his wake. He was denied when Gourlay made an impressive save from his 15-yard shot. Queen’s had another opportunity three minutes later, when player/boss Willie Gibson battered a 22-yard free-kick wide of Gourlay’s right post. Queen’s were rescued by Rae again in the 71st minute, after Vigurs had played a great ball through to Yule. The midfielder’s 10-yard shot was heading for the net until Rae dived to push the ball behind for a corner.

16 17

Vigurs took the corner and crossed to McAllister and his 10-yard header slipped a couple of feet over the Queens’ crossbar. Manager Paul Hartley had thrown all of his outfield subs on and was going for broke before Queen’s scorned a glorious opportunity to make it 2-0 in the 82nd minute. Alistair Roy played the ball through to Fitzpatrick and he looked certain to score until Gourlay made a top drawer save from his 18-yard shot. Rae made another stop from McAllister and Jamie Masson also fired wide from 20-yards as the match moved into four minutes of injury-time, but the Doonhamers held out to book their dream day out at the final. Cove Rangers: Gourlay, Neill, Scully (Adeyemo 77), Ross, Yule, Megginson, McAllister, Vigurs, Leitch (Masson 69), Fyvie (McIntosh 77), Reynolds. Sub: McKenzie. Queen of the South: Rae, O’Connor, Todd, Roy (Paton 93), Fitzpatrick (Joseph 83), Debayo (Cooper 83), McGrory, East, Johnston, Gibson, Soares Junior. Subs: Cowie, McKechnie, Nditi, Folarin, Henderson. Referee: David Dickinson.

— Queen of the South Reaction

QUEEN OF THE SOUTH REACT Cove Rangers striker Rory McAllister is determined not to allow the disappointment of losing out on a place in the SPFL Trust Trophy final harm our chances of continuing our good form in cinch League One. A first minute strike from Aiden Fitzpatrick was enough to give Queen of the South the winning edge in a tense semi-final tussle at Balmoral Stadium. Rory is upset we failed to make better use of the countless scoring opportunities we created after going a goal behind. But he challenged his teammates to put the defeat behind them and focus on extending our 17-match unbeaten run in the league, which will be put to the test against Rory’s old club - Peterhead - this afternoon. Rory said: “It would have been a nice Brucey Bonus if we had got to a final, but the league has always been the most important thing. We’ve got to use the cup defeat to spur us on to avoid any more disappointments. We have worked our socks off since the start of the season to put ourselves in a great position in the league with nine games to go.

“ We have proved we are a good team - but we must keep on proving it because all nine of the games we have left are going to be really tough.” We have proved we are a good team - but we must keep on proving it because all nine of the games we have left are going to be really tough. It hurt to lose the cup tie, but we actually played well in the game. If we play like that every week from here on, we will have a great chance of winning the league. But it’s up to us to go out and do it. We have to keep putting in the effort and doing our best to create as many chances as we did in the cup tie. If we could do that we will be hard to stop because I can’t see us missing as many scoring opportunities as we did against Queen of the South again. It’s a frustrating defeat to take because it feels like a huge opportunity missed by us. To put so much into the game and not get anything out of it is very hard. You’ve got to give them a bit of credit, they put their bodies on the line. They also worked hard, but they got the rub of the green as well. They got all the luck, like when the ball was spinning it would go to them or if a shot was blocked it would fall to their player instead of one of us. If we had been six ahead at half-time they couldn’t have argued, that’s how much on top we were. We weren’t though and no matter how hard we worked to get the goal we needed they held out, which as I said was so frustrating for us.”

— Kevin Tindal Interview

KEVIN Kevin Tindal was a trophy winning player and manager with Cove Rangers. Prior to joining us, he also won promotion at SPFL level with Arbroath and Montrose and also played for Peterhead. Kevin looks back on his career… and also expressed delight that three of the players he worked with in our Highland League days are still key members of the squad.

TINDAL

— Kevin Tindal Interview

Did you enjoy your spells as a player and manager with Cove Rangers? Very much so, I had a long and happy spell at the club- almost 10 years playing alongside and working with some fantastic players and characters. To go from playing to becoming the manager was particularly pleasing. I would have loved if it had been while we could have had the facilities they now have at Balmoral Stadium to call upon. Having said that, I loved it at Allan Park, mainly because we had a great record there. As the present team is proving, being strong at home is vital if you want to be successful. What do you regard as the highlight of your period as a player? You are in the game to win trophies. I was fortunate to gain promotions with Arbroath and Montrose while playing in the Scottish League. But I would put winning the Highland League title with Cove ahead of either of those. I thought the promotions were going to be the highlights of my career until I experienced how joyful it was to be part of a championship winning side. It doesn’t matter the level, if you win your league it fills you with immense pride because it proves you were the best team that season.

Don’t get me wrong, the promotions were still great achievements. But it’s nothing like how you feel when you get your hands on a championship trophy and also get a winners’ medal. It was the first of the backto-back titles we won between 2007-2009, when John Sheran was manager. It meant a lot personally and I like to think it also played a part in helping Cove get to where they are today. When I joined the club from Peterhead, John making it clear how much he wanted to win the league was the biggest selling point. There was already talk of Cove hoping to one day gain entry into the Scottish League, but we all knew it would be a bit easier if we could become successful on a regular basis at Highland League level. John was the driving force. The changeover of players when he first took charge was incredible. He improved the squad at every level because he knew it was crucial that Cove were ready if the opportunity to make the step up ever arose. It’s good that John is still involved behind the scenes today, you can be sure he will still be putting pressure on people to keep working to take the club up to the next level. It’s just in his nature and clubs need people like him offering support to the players and coaching staff.

24 25

How did your move to Cove Rangers come about?

What was it like to then take over as the team manager?

Like I said, I was at Peterhead at the time. They were on a good run and, unfortunately, I just couldn’t get into the side.

A bit daunting at first! We were all a bit surprised when John announced he was leaving after the second title win. But when the club asked if Jerry O’Driscoll and I would take over it was a no brainier.

You are never happy if you aren’t getting a game, so I was happy to accept the offer to go out on loan to Cove. The original plan was for me to eventually return to Peterhead, but once I saw what John was doing at Cove - and how ambitious he was for the club - I made it clear that was where I would prefer to stay. It was about winning trophies, which has always been the most important thing in football as far as I’m concerned. Enjoying who you are training and playing with is a big part of it as well. It would be difficult to list all of the team-mates who made that time at Cove so special. But the one I have to name is big Eric Watson, it’s amazing to think he is still playing at Junior Level all these years later.

We knew John would be a tough act to follow, but we appreciated chairman Keith Moorhouse showing faith in us and also offering us the chance to start our managerial careers with a top club like Cove. It came with a fair bit of pressure though. Back-to-back Highland League title wins hadn’t been done since Steve Paterson’s amazing Huntly side won five on the trot in the 1990s. Jerry and I knew we would have to keep the honours coming if we wanted to stay in our jobs.

Eric is a born winner and the fact he won more honours than any other Cove player in the club’s history tells you all you need to know about him. John obviously picked the team, but he trusted players like myself and Eric to make decisions on the park, in the heat of the battle, if it was required. It was a brilliant time to be a Cove Rangers player.

>>>

— Kevin Tindal Interview

“ When you win a title as a player you are overjoyed. When you do it as a manager, your first feelings are ones of total relief.”

26 27

How did winning the league as a player compare to also doing it as a manager? The fact it took us three years to actually win the title again ensured it meant a lot. But I would have to say you enjoy it more as a player than you do as a manager. I totally underestimated just how massive the Cove manager’s job was and probably still is. The chairman trusts you to get on with doing what you think is required to bring success, which is a huge responsibility. When you win a title as a player you are overjoyed. When you do it as a manager, your first feelings are ones of total relief.

You know how hard everyone has worked to help you get to the point of winning a title, so when it does happen it’s as if a huge weight has been taken off of your shoulders. You don’t get too long to enjoy it as manager either. When I played you spent the summer looking back on what you had achieved and resting before the next campaign started. As soon as you win it as a manager you are immediately thinking about what needs to be done to the squad to make sure you have a chance of doing it again the following season. You simply don’t get the luxury of enjoying triumphs, your mind is always on the next challenge.

>>>

— Kevin Tindal Interview

Three of the current squad - Stuart McKenzie, Blair Yule and Connor Scully - were at the club when you played or were manager. Does it please you to see them still key members of the squad pushing for promotion from League One? Very much so. Stuart has always been a top class goalkeeper. He has great stature, is commanding and his kicking and use of the ball is just what you need at SPFL level. Stuart joined Montrose after we won the league and it’s great Cove were able to persuade him to come back. His shut-out record since Cove were promoted to the SPFL is incredible and underlines just how good he is. Blair was just a young kid when he came in. He had just been released by Aberdeen and I can honestly say we couldn’t believe our luck. We couldn’t believe Aberdeen didn’t see how talented a player Blair is. Blair is full of energy, he could run all day, but he is also a fantastic footballer and it hasn’t surprised me to see him become a mainstay of the team since they made the step up. He’s playing now exactly as he did back then, nothing seems to phase Blair, he just goes out there and quietly goes about his business. You can be sure he’s a player who is highly valued by his teammates.

28 29

I also admire how hard Connor has worked to improve as a player and become a key part of what Cove are achieving. He was still a youngster as well when I was the manager. It’s Graeme Mathieson (who was in charge of the Cove youth side at that time) who deserves the credit for spotting his potential and always pushing for Connor to become more involved. Connor’s real assets are his versatility and willingness to do anything that is asked of him for the sake of the team. We played him wide, up front and occasionally in the heart of midfield and he never let us down. He’s a far better player now than he was when he first arrived and that’s down to his hard work - and the quality of the coaching he is getting at Cove now. It would have been easy for Cove to look to fill their squad with players who had only played at SPFL level when they were promoted three years ago. But it’s no surprise to see they have rewarded the likes of Blair and Connor for the parts they played in getting the club up in the first place.

>>>

“ We couldn’t believe Aberdeen didn’t see how talented a player Blair [Yule] is.”

— Kevin Tindal Interview

Your old club Arbroath are now pushing to be promoted to the Premiership, despite being a part-time club. Is that something Cove should take inspiration from? I don’t see why Cove can’t do as well as Arbroath are doing at the moment. People make far too much of part-time sides finding it tough to compete against full-time ones. I’ve seen Arbroath a lot this season and they haven’t been outrun by anyone, they are as fit as any of the other sides in the Championship. What counts is having the right manager and players with the right mind-set - and I would argue Arbroath and Cove Rangers both have that at the moment. Cove still have a lot of work to do, but if they could eventually make it up to the Championship I don’t see why they can’t kick on in the manner that Arbroath have. As we have seen this season, they seem to relish the opportunity of proving they can go toe-to-toe with full time opponents and you can be sure nobody would relish facing Cove, especially at Balmoral Stadium.

PAUL HARTL We are really looking forward to this afternoon’s game. Every meeting we’ve had so far with Peterhead has been highly competitive and we know we will need to be at our best if want to take anything from this latest one. I made it clear before the campaign started that competing at the top end of cinch League One was our no.1 goal. I have to praise every single player in our squad for delivering on that so far. Injuries and other factors have denied us the opportunity to pick the same side two games in a row, which means everyone has been called upon to do their bit at some stage. They can be very proud of what they have already achieved. We are now unbeaten in 17 league games, with 11 victories during that run. That is a remarkable return in a league as competitive as ours is. It has only been possible because the players have shown a strong mentality, desire and work ethic every time they have gone out on the pitch.

>>> They don’t need me to remind them those qualities will have to continue to be displayed if we are have a successful conclusion to our season. We have nine very tough league games to go - with the derby clash against Peterhead likely to be among the most challenging. It’s the business end of the campaign, when you need to up your game because every opponent you face has their own reasons for needing the points. I’m confident our lads will rise to that and do us proud, just as they did in the cup competitions this season. It’s disappointing we lost to Queen of the South in midweek to miss out on a place in the SPFL Trust Trophy final. But anyone at the game - or watching it live on television - saw just how good the team we have here at Cove Rangers is. We totally dominated after losing an early goal and only lost because we were unable to take any of the numerous chances we created. I thanked the players at the end because it was clear they had given everything they had. It was the same when we took Hibs to extra-time in the Scottish Cup, another tie that was screened live by the BBC. Even though we lost, the performances from our players reflected well on them and our club. Enjoy the game. Paul Hartley

“ We are all bitterly disappointed to have fallen short in our bid to take the club to its first senior final since stepping up to the SPFL only three years ago.” But the good thing about football is there is always the next game and challenge to focus on to ensure you don’t dwell too long on any defeats. Even now, several days later, we still can’t believe we ended up losing to Queen of the South in our SPFL Trust Trophy Semi-Final. I can’t recall another game where we have dominated as much as we did in that one and come away with nothing. Having said that, I must congratulate The Doonhamers for getting their early goal then defending to a man to ensure that was enough to give them the victory they needed. I wish them well when they play in the final. And I can assure you going as close as we did will make us even more determined to go a step further when we return to competing in the cups next season. For now though, it’s all about doing everything in our power to take as many points as possible from our remaining nine league games. We are in a good position in cinch League One as we prepare to entertain Peterhead this afternoon, but I can promise you not a single person at the club is taking anything for granted. It’s great that we are unbeaten in our last 17 league games and we can also take pride from our runs in both the Scottish Cup and SPFL Trust Trophy. But the attitude at Cove Rangers has always been that you must never look any further ahead than the next game.

— Captain’s view

>>> Especially when it’s one that is going to be as tough as this afternoon’s encounter with Peterhead. Every meeting between us in highly intense, with the fact we know so many of the Peterhead players on a personal level a small part of why that is the case. We are also at the stage of the season where every side has their own reasons to need points, so nobody needs tell us that only our best will do if we are to get the result that we want. CYCR!
