The players came back in great shape and have worked hard so I’m confident they can make it difficult for Hibs I WOULD like to welcome the players, staff and officials of Hibernian to Balmoral Stadium on yet another historic day for our club. Our Betfred League Cup group match has the honour of being the first to be screened live from our home ground. We are all excited by that, even though we know we are in for one of our toughest tests of the entire campaign against a Hibs side who have made an impressive start to their season. But it’s just great to be back preparing to play some real football again. It’s a shame the Cove Rangers fans won’t be there to share in the excitement and back us in the magnificent style they did throughout last season. The last six months will have been pretty tough on them and I’m gutted they are going to have to wait a bit longer for the chance to be at our matches. The fact the clash with Hibs is being shown live on Premier TV will at least give them the opportunity to see how we fare against one of the leading sides in the country. It’s also great that our club has launched Cove Rangers TV, so that the supporters will also be able to view our home games live when we eventually start our League One campaign. It underlines how much we appreciate the backing we get and how determined the directors at the club are to ensure the Cove fans get the opportunity to still see us in action during these strange times. Our main focus today, of course, is on making it as tough as we possibly can for Hibs. Almost everyone in the country accepts they are the hot favourites to win our group. Hibs are 10 games into their Premiership campaign, sitting third in the table and it top form. They are clearly well ahead of us as far as match fitness and preparation is concerned. It means there is no pressure on us in this tie but I still want

to see us perform well and make it as difficult as we can for Hibs over the course of the 90 minutes. What I have seen from our players in the five weeks since we returned to training gives me reasons to be optimistic about that. I have to commend the players for the way they looked after themselves during the extended break. They came back in great shape and that allowed us to make good use of the limited time we’ve had to prepare for the new campaign. I was also very pleased with what I saw from them in the five pre-season matches we played. Facing Hibs is going to be a huge step up for them at this stage but I will be urging them to relish that challenge - and try to enjoy the occasion. I know I will. Enjoy the game!

Cove relishing the chance to play against one of the big clubs live on Premier Sports TV IT’S good to finally be back playing competitive football again! The fact our first match in six months is against one of the biggest clubs in the country - and is being shown live on Premier Sports Television - adds even more magic to the occasion. The only negative is that the current situation means there will be no fans inside Balmoral Stadium to watch us against Hibs. Our supporters played a huge part in our success last season which is backed up by the fact we won all 14 of the League Two matches we played at home. It will have been as tough for them not being able to see us these six months as it had been for us not being able to actually play. Hopefully it won’t be too long before the restrictions are eased and our fans will be back in at Balmoral cheering us on as they normally do in such style. The Hibs game being screened live at least gives them the opportunity to see how we are shaping up ahead of our first League One campaign. Every one of us worked really hard during the shut-down to ensure we were as fit as we could possibly be when we came back to training. You could see that in the pre-season games, we performed at a decent level against some very good opposition. Facing Hibs will be a totally different test though. Our group games in last season’s Betfred League Cup were used to fine tune us ahead of the start of the league campaign. It will be the same this time, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have ambitions to do well and maybe even make it through to the next stage. It will be tough to do that with an in-form Hibs side starting as clear favourites to win our group. But playing a side as good as they are is the ideal chance to see exactly where we are in terms of fitness and a great opportunity to show we can compete with the best. There’s no pressure on us because Hibs will be expected to win, but cup competitions are always full of upsets, so you must go into every tie thinking you are capable of coming out on top.
Mitch Megginson
If we could do that it would be a huge boost ahead of what we know is going to be a really challenging League One campaign. We were all extremely excited by the prospect of playing for Cove Rangers at SPFL level for the first time last year. It’s the same now, as we prepare for what is sure to be another big adventure for our club. We are eager to prove ourselves again after making yet another step up. I’ve played in League One before, so know just how tough the task is that lies ahead of us is going to be. We are going to have to be right on our game from the off, week in, week out. One advantage is the fact most of the squad who won the League Two title last season are still at Balmoral Stadium. We are a very tight-knit group and that close camaraderie played a huge part in us doing as well as we did. The manager has also added some quality to the squad and the new boys have gelled straight away, so we are in a positive place as we get ready to get back to doing what we love most. COYC

8 ON THE SPOT -FRASER FYVIE
Winning the Scottish Cup with Hibs was Cove ace Fraser’s finest day in football COVE Rangers midfielder Fraser Fyvie has good reason to be relishing the prospect of facing Hibs in the Betfred League Cup. That’s because Fraser is a legend to the Hibees faithful for the part he played in helping them finally win the Scottish Cup again in 2016 - and then win promotion back into the Scottish Premiership the following season. The 27-year-old was also on the bench for Wigan Athletic - whom he joined after leaving home town club Aberdeen - when they lifted the English FA Cup in 2013. But it’s that Hampden glory day with Hibs - when they beat Rangers 3-2 thanks to an injury-time strike by David Gray to take the Scottish Cup back to Easter Road for the first time in 114 years - that is the stand-out moment in Fraser’s career so far. He said: “Winning the Scottish Cup with Hibs was my best day in football. “It will be a wee bit strange for me facing them now with Cove because I’ve not even been back to any of their games since leaving Easter Road. But there’s still a lot of boys there that I know and speak to. “Hibs are also a great football club and I really enjoyed my time there, so facing them with Cove means a lot to me.” Hibs had lost 10 finals since last winning the Scottish Cup way back in 1902 and were making their third final appearance inside five years when they faced up to Rangers. They were defeated in those previous two finals - by Hearts and Celtic - and most pundits were predicting another day of heartache for the Hibs fans at the national stadium. So you can understand the joy felt by Fraser and his teammates when Gray headed home the decisive goal in the second minute of added time. When the final whistle sounded thousands of celebrating Hibs fans spilled on to the pitch, which unfortunately resulted in some ugly confrontations with rival supporters.
But that could never overshadow what will also be remembered as one of the greatest days in the history of the Edinburgh club. Fraser said: “It was really enjoyable because of the way we played, the dramatic way we won it, and because we knew how much finally winning that Cup meant to everyone at Hibs. “The club had endured decades of stick because it had been so long since the Scottish Cup had been taken back to Easter Road. “We got a taste of it when lost in the Challenge Cup and also slipped up in our fight for promotion. “The newspapers were full of claims about it being the same old story - and that we would ‘Hibs it again’ in the Scottish Cup final as well. “It was extremely pleasing to prove all of our critics wrong at Hampden - it was a special day that all of us who were involved will never forget. “It really struck home when we saw how the Hibs fans celebrated after the game. “They had waited so long for that Cup and it was great knowing you were one of the players who had finally delivered it to them.” It’s all about Cove for Fraser now though and he is delighted to see us return from six months without competitive football with a clash against a Hibs side flying high in the Premiership. They are currently in third spot, hot on the tails of the Old Firm. “We are all really looking forward to it,” said Fraser, who signed a new one year contract with us during the extended summer break enforced because of the coronavirus epidemic. “It’s against one of the best teams in the country, live on the telly and a chance for us to start as we hope to continue through the season. “It’s good that we know we face a tough test because we know we are going to have to set high standards right through the campaign if we want to compete at League One level. “Nobody gave Cove a hope of doing as well as we did last season. “It’s another free shot because we won’t be expected to do as well, especially with us being up against some full-time clubs. “But we are determined to do well and a good show in the game against Hibs and our other League Cup ties would obviously set us up nicely for when the league campaign starts.”

It’s been a busy summer for the club, despite the lack of football THERE has been plenty going on behind the scenes at Balmoral Stadium while football has been in cold storage. Our management team of Paul Hartley, Gordon Young and Tam Ritchie all agreed new contract extensions, as did midfield duo Fraser Fyvie and Jamie Masson. Former Dundee United and Kilmarnock keeper Alan Combe also took over as goalkeeping coach when John McCafferty stepped down because of work commitments. Our first team squad has been strengthened by several new arrivals. Ex-Peterhead striker Leighton McIntosh arrived after leaving Wrexham, as did former Aberdeen FC reserve team captain Seb Ross. Defender Adam Livingstone, who was previously with Motherwell, agreed a two year deal at Balmoral Stadium. The Steelmen also allowed us to take midfielder Jamie Semple in on loan. The 189 day wait to actually get back to playing ended when we beat Brechin City 4-2 at Glebe Park in the first of five closed doors friendly games. A double from Leighton McIntosh and singles from Seb Ross and Daniel Higgins were enough to see us fight back from 2-0 down to win. Two clashes with Championship side Dundee, the first at Balmoral Stadium and the other at Dens Park, proved particularly beneficial.

Ian Yule and Roy McBain after their marathon walk to Dundee
We were desperately unlucky to lose the first 1-0, to an 85th header by Dundee captain Paul McGowan, after we had been reduced to 10 men because Adam Livingstone had to go off injured. Honours were even in the rematch, although it could be argued we deserved more than a 1-1 draw.
Mugs - £8
Scott Ross put us ahead in the 50th minute and Dundee’s equaliser came via an unfortunate own goal from Ryan Strachan. We left it late before seeing off Highland League opponents Fraserburgh 3-0 at Balmoral Stadium. Mitch Megginson opened the scoring in the 75th minute, with Connor Scully and Jamie Masson also on target.
Beanie Hats - £10
The run of pre-season games concluded with a 4-1 victory over Aberdeen Junior side Banks o’ Dee at Balmoral Stadium. Jordon Brown and Mitch Megginson scored for us in the first half and Leighton McIntosh grabbed a double in the second period.
Limited Edition Polo Shirt - £35
Tartan Scarf - £15
That proved to be midfielder Jamie Redman’s last appearance for us. We would like thank Jamie, who had joined us from Montrose in June of last year, for his services and wish him all the best for the future. Special thanks also go to Cove Rangers fan Ian Yule and our former player and coach Roy McBain, who completed a sponsored walk from Balmoral Stadium to Dundee United’s Tannadice Park to help cover the legal costs of defending our right to be promoted to League One. They were joined at various stages by manager Paul Hartley, former players Mark Perry, Eric Watson, Kevin Tindal and John McCafferty as well as football director John Sheran, youth coach Gary Hake and club secretary Duncan Little. Daniel Higgins was on the scoresheet at Brechin friendly
The efforts of all of them were much appreciated.
