Q&A with Andrew Gullett, Head of Wills & Probate, Pudsey Legal Andrew Gullett is a qualified solicitor with over 14 years’ experience in his field. He has a particular interest in acting for clients who are suffering from forms of dementia and here he answers the common questions he is asked on the sensitive subject of Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA’s). Q. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A. It is a document which gives someone else the legal power to look after your affairs if you cannot do so yourself. However, the person making this has to have the requisite mental capacity to do so at the time it is made. Q. What are the types of Lasting Power of Attorney? There are two types: One type is Property and Financial Affairs LPA, which, as it suggests, gives the attorney the power to make decisions about the donor’s property and financial affairs. The second type is called Health and Welfare LPA, which gives the attorney permission to make decisions concerning the donor’s personal welfare and healthcare. This can include, medical treatment and decisions about where you live. Q. What happens if some has not made a Lasting Power of Attorney and then loses their mental capacity? A. This is a very difficult and different situation where a deputy would need to be appointed by the Court of Protection (COP). This requires making a complicated application to the COP, which can be a long and often expensive process. Under this process, the court appoints the deputy, who is often a family member, who then makes the decisions for the person as authorised by the court. Q. How much does it cost to put a Lasting Power of Attorney in place? A. We have fixed prices listed on our website which start from £299 plus v.a.t. for one LPA. This includes a free home visit but excludes the court registration fee of £130 (unless you are entitled to a fee exemption). Q. How can Pudsey Legal help me? We can, if necessary, make a FREE preliminary assessment of your needs over the telephone and advise you on the most appropriate course of action. We can then prepare and register your LPA’s. Huge thanks to the many readers who have sent in comments about Covered – we’re all absolutely delighted with your feedback. It’s great to hear that we’re getting it right and that our advertisers are getting plenty of calls from you all! So positive have your comments been that we’ve taken the decision to launch another edition in the summer, covering three more postcodes and taking our distribution to 60,000 copies per month – more details on that in our next edition!

Co

Spring has finally sprung – hooray! Hopefully we won’t feel the need to comment on how bad the British weather is for at least a few months. That said, if it rains all through this summer as it did the last then you can expect plenty of gripes. So, get in the spirit and make the most of the good days when we have them! There’s a huge programme of summer events and activities in our community – fun days, galas and festivals – some are free entry, those that aren’t usually offer excellent value for money and are often in support of a worthy local cause. Inside Covered this month you’ll find details of Caring For Life’s Open Day and Rawdon Fun Day – both events support local causes. Get involved if you can. Check out our Diary Dates section for others.

Tomlinson’s has been a regular haunt for the people of Pudsey since Jackie first opened her farm shop on Roker Lane in 1977. The shop was initially opened to sell only produce grown on-site, but a refurbishment and expansion two years ago has seen the introduction of a wide range of fresh produce, as well as a butchers’ concession from Bentleys of Pudsey.

Tomlinson’s The farm is now maintained by Jackie’s son, whilst daughter Heidi looks after the shop, but Jackie is still a regular behind the counter and can often be seen chatting to customers. It’s good to see this local company back in business after they were forced to close for a short while due to competition and rock bottom prices at the nearby supermarkets. Food and health scares seem all too frequent in the news these days, and do make the public think about where they want to buy their food, and who they trust, and local companies, such as Tomlinson’s, offer fresher produce, which hasn’t been mass produced. Growing mainly green vegetables on-site, such as asparagus, cauliflower and cabbages, Tomlinson’s buy in other produce from market, sourcing good quality, affordable, and locally where possible. Confectionary comes from Haigh’s at Guiseley, eggs from Andrew Leadbeater in Birkenshaw and smoked produce, such as salmon and bacon, from McKenzies in Blubberhouses. And some of the jams and curd available are made by the family. Rhubarb is a popular winter product for the company, and is force grown in sheds in the colder months and also grown in the fields in summer, and Tomlinson’s rhubarb can be found on the menu at some of Harrogate’s smart spa hotels. There has been a rise in demand for rhubarb and Heidi thinks this food ‘fashion’ may be down to an increasing number of people staying at home to cook their own meals and being inspired by TV chefs who seek to promote different and overlooked produce, such as beetroot and rhubarb. Whatever the reason, demand is so high that new rhubarb sheds are currently being built at Tomlinson’s in order to meet demand.

Local companies, such as Tomlinson’s, offer fresher produce, which hasn’t been mass produced.

The inclusion of Bentleys butchers is also a massive success

“Tomlinson’s rhubarb can be found on the menu at some of Harrogate’s smart spa hotels”

The inclusion of Bentleys butchers is also a massive success and there barely seems a minute when there’s not a queue at the counter. Recognised for their award winning sausages and pies, Bentleys also specialise in organic meat produce and game, and offer a wide range of products from your ubiquitous steak and chops to spicy meatballs. The introduction of the butchers also means that the products for a meal can now be bought under one roof, with even a bunch of flowers to decorate the table! Many customers ask about opening a café to compliment their thriving empire but this family prefer to stick to what they know, and to do what they know well, rather than compromising standards. And who can blame them? With lots of fresh air and magnificent views across the valley to Tong, celebrating Halloween by growing pumpkins and making up food hampers for Christmas, it sounds like a busy, but good life, to me. Next Month Covered visits The Woolpack, Esholt following its extensive refurbishment. If you’re a producer or provider of quality cuisine then us know - we’re always on the hunt for good food to feature in our pages. Features are free of charge and included in 45,000 magazines!

A refurbishment and expansion two years ago has seen the introduction of a wide range of fresh produce.

editor’s note Are you a food producer or provider with a difference? Are you a regular at Farmers’ Markets? Do you do food with flair? Let us at Covered know – we’re looking for Farm Shops, Growers, Café’s, Bakery’s, Vintners, Restaurants, etc who do things differently. There is no cost should we choose to feature your business and you’ll benefit from exposure in Leeds’ leading monthly magazine!

1lb Meatballs Oil, for frying Grated zest and juice 1 orange 2 tbsp olive oil 1 leek, thinly sliced 200g caster sugar Red onion, sliced 225g potatoes, boiled and 6 stems rhubarb Yellow pepper, sliced 50g pine nuts cooled 2 cardamom pods 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped tsp tomato paste Juice 1 lemon 6 eggs 2 star anise ½ tsp smoked paprika 85g cheddar 280ml double cream 25g Manchego cheese Can plum tomatoes 1 tbsp sage, finely chopped Grated zest and juice 1 lemon 2 tbsp red wine 2 tsp chopped fresh rosemary Spicy sausage, sliced (optional) 3-4 tbsp Madeira wine 18 asparagus spears 70g unsalted butter

Asparagus with Toasted Pine Nuts & Manchego Cheese Bring pan of salted water to the boil and plunge in asparagus. Cook for 2-3 minutes, drain and keep somewhere warm. Next, heat the butter in a cold pan with the pine nuts. Heat up slowly so that butter doesn’t burn. When turning golden brown and beginning to foam, remove from heat and pour in lemon juice. Arrange asparagus and spoon over brown butter and nuts. Shave the cheese over the top and serve immediately.

Cheese, Leek & Potato Tortilla Heat oil in a medium frying pan, then fry the leek (and optional sausage) for around 5 minutes, until softened. Meanwhile, cut potatoes into slices 0.5cm thick. Beat eggs, season and stir in cheese and sage. Add extra oil to pan, if needed, before adding potatoes, then egg mixture. Turn heat low and cook for 10 minutes until almost set. Place under a hot grill to cook for a couple more minutes before top is golden and set. Slice into wedges and serve.

2 tsp chopped fresh basil

Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

Rhubarb Syllabub

Heat olive oil in a pan over a medium heat. Add meatballs and cook for several minutes until brown an all sides. Add the pepper, onion, garlic and paprika to the pan and cook for 2-3 minutes before adding the tomato paste, stirring whilst cooking for a further 1 minute. Add tomatoes, wine, rosemary and basil before simmering gently for 20 minutes, or until the meatballs are cooked. Season generously with salt and pepper and serve sizzling hot.

Heat oven to190 degrees celsius. Warm orange juice in a pan and dissolve 100g sugar in it. Cut rhubarb into 3cm lengths and cook in an ovenproof dish with the orange juice, zest, cardamom and star anise for 15 minutes. Lift out the rhubarb pieces and set aside to cool. Make the syrup by boiling up the rhubarb juice until it thickens. Remove cardamom pods and star anise and leave to cool. To make the syllabub, put the cream, lemon zest and juice, wine and 100g sugar into a bowl and beat until the mixture become thick and light. Put the cooled rhubarb into individual glasses, spoon over some syrup, then syllabub mixture on top and chill for few hours before serving.

Covered Profile: Rafael Chandler of Croft Street Fisheries

Croft Street Fisheries does not serve fast food, but quality food as fast as we can!

- Rafael Chandler Owner, Croft Street Fisheries.

After 13 years of working in the trade, Rafael Chandler remains as passionate about fish & chips as he did when he first took to a fryer back at the turn of the century. Covered spoke to the Farsley based entrepreneur about his achievements and love of the great British Chippy.

It all began in 2000 when Rafael started a first shift at Otley’s The Cove. Over the next few years, he continued to learn the trade, eventually buying a chippy in Undercliffe, along with family members. The experience confirmed to him that he wanted to be involved in quality catering and the quest to fry the perfect portion began. It wasn’t long before the accolades came. 2006 saw Rafael come runner up in the Young Fish Fryer of the Year Competition, which gave him the confidence to invest in Croft Street Fisheries, Farsley, in 2007. Just a year later, Rafael and his team had redeveloped the shop completely, refitting and installing a new frying range, one of the best in the country. The progress at the shop was rewarded with him winning the Quality Award from the Seafish Authority in 2009 – high praise indeed considering there are around 10,500 Chippies in the UK! The success didn’t stop there, Croft Street Fisheries was the first shop in Leeds to be Awarded the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) Quality Award, which they have kept every year since and in 2012 they were awarded the title of 'Britains Best Chippy' as voted by Morrisons magazine. From the outset, Rafael has insisted on quality at his establishment; using the finest ingredients he can find and always with a keen eye on sustainability. This has been recognised by the industry and now, as well as owning and running Croft Street

Fisheries, Rafael delivers training at the NFFF in Leeds, to people looking at buying their own Fish & Chip shop. So, what’s next for this inspiring local success? “I have always wanted to expand the business by opening a second shop, and hopefully in the next 12-18 months we can achieve that. Maybe Covered readers could pass on some suggestions as to where you would like to see an Award Winning Fish & Chip shop next?”

If you look role for accredited letting agents to offer expert advice after your property and your tenant then a rent increase should be achievable. and help make the process as smooth as possible. Against a backdrop of rising demand and a shortage of properties, rents are increasing but this does not mean that landlords can turn a blind eye to the need to keep their properties well looked after and in good condition. As a rule, and advised by the Tenancy Deposit Scheme and other Government deposit schemes, properties should be redecorated every 5 to 6 years, with carpets replaced every 8 to 9 years.

This should be used to bring rents in line with those commanded by other similar properties in the market. But don’t rely on the lethargy of a tenant; if your property is not up to specification, they may be tempted to move to one that is.

Home Health Check have you done yours?

With summer just around the corner, we’ve all now done a spring-clean and recent bank holidays will have seen many an interior inspected, paintwork touched up and cushions plumped. But, don’t forget to give the exterior of your home a good examination too!

An extreme case of window frame rot

Neil Gillson (of Aspray, National Insurance Claims Management & Property Repair Company) gives Covered his top tips for making sure your property is in great condition, leaving you to enjoy a relaxing, stress-free summer!

Clear out guttering and downpipes – pipes and guttering will have taken a battering over winter. Check (wherever possible and only if safe to do so) that gutters are clear of debris and downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall. Blocked gutters can cause rainwater to leak into your home, so be sure to keep them clear!

Check your roof – it’s important to check your roof to see if any tiles or slates are damaged, loose or missing. Inspect the pointing of your chimney, looking out for cracks or loose mortar. For properties with flat roofs, make sure lead flashings are intact and that puddles are swept away regularly.

Review the condition of your outside wall – deteriorating brickwork, rendering and peeling paintwork should be dealt with swiftly as rainwater, draughts and damp will penetrate tiny cracks. Ventilation bricks can get blocked so ensure they are always clear.

20 Property Matters

Repair and reseal windows – cracked, peeling paintwork, loose putty and rotten frames need to be checked, repaired and sealed. Further decay may occur if neglected. And let’s face it: rotting window frames don’t look great either! Fix patio and driveway erosion – the quickest way to ‘de-winter’ your patio is to use a pressure washer which can sometimes reveal potholes, cracks and tarmac deterioration. Make sure these are repaired before the spring showers start to fall. Damaged or loose slabs can be incredibly dangerous, so list it as a top priority. Better safe than sorry! Various parts of your house and garden may have taken a tough beating from the brutal blizzards of the year’s first quarter. Don’t let your home become so deteriorated that your insurance no longer covers it. Prevention is better than cure! If you’d like any advice or support for health checking your home, don’t hesitate to contact Aspray on: 0113 208 9719. www.aspray.com

22 Antiques & Vintage

Up the Garden Path Covered has a few ideas for people looking at exterior design this summer Old school Traditional garden ornamentation, sometimes known as “statuary”, falls into two broad categories of age and type. First, there are the classical pieces, or antiquities, from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the like. Often in the images of gods, or their forms on earth, they are the standards by which all others are judged. Then there are the later pieces from the 17th century onward based, sometimes loosely, on the classical period. The main difference between the two is that limestone, coadestone (similar to concrete) and iron were in more common use than bronze or marble. In the 18th century, methods and speeds of manufacture improved dramatically. New money wanted to be noticed. The ornamentation of the grounds of stately homes was a favourite way to make a statement. New school Cost, garden theft, escalating insurance premiums and the trend of recycling have made people look at alternatives when deciding how they might decorate their gardens. Anything goes. Treadle sewing machine tables, dilapidated pushbikes, chimney pots, stone sinks, enamel signs and discarded masonry can all be eyecatching features if positioned and planted sympathetically. Where to look Specialists in garden ornaments are few and far between. But items do turn up. So, locally, it’s a question of phoning round and registering your interest. There are several members of SALVO, the architectural salvage dealers’ association, in Yorkshire. Their website salvo. co.uk is creditable – comprehensive and up-to-date. Locally, Hartleys Auctioneers in Ilkley have a special garden and architectural section in their antiques and

Anything goes. The large fossilised tree trunk was one of several unorthodox garden ornaments in Hartleys’ 2010 summer antiques and fine art sale – this year on 19 June. Old enamel signs add colour and interest to patios and modern synthetic “statuary” is less of a worry than truly antique examples (exhibited at Lincoln County Showground, next event 3-4 June).

fine art sale on 19 June. Or maybe it’s worth taking a trip to either or even both of the country’s 2000 exhibitor antiques events at Lincoln Showground (next 3-4 June) or Newark Showground (next 6-7 June). Authenticy and prices Beware stolen or fake items and be prepared to pay a premium when buying from a dealer or auction house qualified to guarantee ownership and provenance. Porous “stone” usually suggests a semi-synthetic composite. There is no harm in buying these – although more susceptible to frost, they are a lot less expensive and certainly look the part after spending an autumn with a thin coat of yoghurt. Nowadays, indistinguishable imports from India mean that genuine stone features such as troughs are around a quarter of the price they once were.

24 Animal Matters

All Creatures Great and Small In this new monthly feature, we’re going to be taking a regular look at all things feathered, furry, scaly or shelled! Regardless of how much you protest to a pet, there will come a point, especially if you’ve got kids, when the pestering will deplete your resilience. So, what makes for a good first pet? Here are some options to consider: PICK OF THE PETS

1

Hamster, Gerbil, Mouse or Rat

The stuff of nightmares for many adults, but rodents make wonderful pets for children. Food, water, bedding, and an exercise wheel are all it takes to keep them happy in the cage although they benefit from handling and can even learn tricks! Be warned though, left unsupervised they will head for the nearest hidey-hole and you might end up ripping floorboards to rescue them!

2

Guinea Pig

Although part of the rodent family, guinea pigs require a more hands-on approach than their smaller cousins and like to live in groups. Long-haired breeds require daily grooming, which is good practice for responsible pet ownership in later years. Why not consider adopting a couple? Try Bramley Cavies Rescue, who offer advice and have a variety of small animals ready for adoption. Visit: bramleycaviesrescue.com

3

Small Lizards

A great starter pet; after all, which child doesn’t want a mini Jurassic Park! Novice owners should seek advice before taking the plunge, though. Juvenile iguanas and monitors may look small and cute, but can grow to several feet in length. Bearded dragons or leopard geckos are small, docile and require little maintenance. With lizards, kids get the excitement of feeding them live food!

4

Rescue an Older Dog or Cat

Puppies and kittens are top of the want list for most kids, but the amount of patience and training required can make them a handful. Why not consider a more mature dog or cat? Older animals tend to have basic house training and are usually tamer, making them better companions for kids. As a rescue animal they will still need plenty of attention, so they’re great as a family pet! Do visit your local animal charity if you’re considering a pet! There are so many wonderful animals waiting to find their permanent home! Contact one of the centres below if interested: westyorkshiredogrescue.co.uk dogstrust.org.uk whitehalldogrescue.com leedsfelinefriends.org.uk leedscatrescue.btck.co.uk rspcaleedsandwakefield.org.uk

Are you so proud of your pet you want to share it with the world? (Well, your local area at least!) Send us a snap with your pet’s name and a short description – we’ll pick the best of the bunch and publish in next month’s issue! To get us started, here’s a pic of the Editor’s hound, Shana - a Bulldog X Staffordshire Bull Terrier, rehomed through West Yorkshire Dog Rescue. Despite her tough exterior, she’s a real softie with bags of character that loves nothing more than a snooze on the sofa after a manic session of fetch in the park!

Send your pet photos to: info@covered-magazine.net or text: 07999 138390 or post to the usual address (see P3)

Brownberrie Lane, Leeds, LS18 5HD

5Wellbeing Ways to

There are many reasons why physical activity is good for your body, but did you know that it’s also beneficial for your mental health and wellbeing? The message from Mental Health Awareness Week (13th-19th May) is that we should personally value physical activity as having a positive impact on our wellbeing.

Even a short burst of 10 minutes brisk walking increases our mental awareness, energy and positive mood and regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and reduce stress and anxiety. Here are 5 ways suggestions to improve your wellbeing.

1

Start Slowly

Set yourself goals some goals. If physical activity is new to you, build up your ability gradually. Focus on task goals such as improving sport skills or stamina rather than competition. If you are already fairly active is there an event in Leeds you’d like to take part in such as next year’s Leeds Half Marathon or 10k, the Abbey Dash or Skyride.

2

Be Practical

Will you need support from family and friends to complete your chosen activities? Exercising with a friend can boost motivation and reduce anxiety

about how you look to others. If using a gym ask about couples membership as you might be surprised to find they offer deals for friends or relatives exercising together and not just husband and wives.

3

Make it part of Daily Life

A lack of time is the most common reason given for not exercising. Consider where you could fit an activity into your weekly routine. Could you do something before or on the way to or from work. Consider parking the car further away and walking in or getting off a bus stop earlier. Ask to see if your company offer a Bike to Work scheme and potentially save a fortune on a bike and accessories.

4

Get Outdoors

Research shows that doing physical activity in an outdoor ‘green’ environment has greater positive

Local Matters

27

Are you fed up of dieting? What if you could say NO to chocolate? How would it feel to NOT WANT a piece of cake and SAY NO to another glass of wine? Since 2002 Julie Woodcock has been helping people like you to STOP SMOKING, LOSE WEIGHT, and remove STRESS and PHOBIA. More information and hundreds of testimonials at: www.breakthehabit.co.uk

effects on wellbeing compared to exercise indoors. Swap that game of indoor football for outdoor, or switch that ‘top up’ trip to the supermarket for a walk down the High Street. Leeds boasts some of thebest public parks in the country but when was the last time you went for a walk? The treats at the café offer great reward for anyone walking around Golden Acre, or take a brisk walk around Pudsey Park.

5

Note Your Progress

Regularly look back at what you’ve achieved. Using a pedometer or an app on your smartphone (Runtastic Lite is a great free app) can help record your development. Note how well your doing and set yourself some new goals.

31 Local Matters

StUart Andrew mp I had the pleasure of visiting Calverley Parkside School and meeting with pupils currently campaigning to improve the local environment through clearing up the dog mess problem in Calverley Park. This is not only an unsightly problem but also a clear hygiene risk to children in the area and I commend the pupils at the school for campaigning for a solution which will benefit everyone who uses the park. On a very different note, State visits to Parliament are rare occurrences and the now yearly State Opening of Parliament is a highlight on the political calendar. The Queen’s Speech contained some very welcome announcements this year, such as the introduction of legislation which will reform the way long term care is paid for, to ensure the elderly do not have to sell their homes to meet their care bills. The Deregulation Bill will reduce the burden of excessive regulation on businesses, reducing or removing burdens on businesses and Civil Society and facilitating growth. I was particularly pleased to see high speed rail on the agenda for the next Parliamentary session, given my strong support for the project, and I believe that this major investment in our transport system will have a positive impact on our region. Finally, I am sure many readers will have shared my interest in the announcement of the Immigration Bill. This issue has been a taboo subject for too long and I know from my own constituency postbag that immigration is a huge concern for many people. This bill will stop immigrants accessing services they are not entitled to, make it easier to remove people from the UK and harder for people to prolong their stay with spurious appeals. It will also specify that foreign nationals who commit serious crimes shall, except in extraordinary circumstances, be deported.

Plant beds now for a bouquet of colour

the clumps after the leaves have died down.

The wet and cold autumn, winter and spring has washed out many of the soil nutrients, so this is a good time to spread a balanced fertiliser all around the garden. Then top up with a high potash feed for your fruit trees and bushes, together with your rose bushes. With the soil starting to warm up, all the plants in your garden will be showing signs of new life – and demanding your attention. Starting with the lawn, give it a good scarifying (raking) to remove all the old thatch, and if possible give it a good spiking with a garden fork to add air to the roots. Then sprinkle a spring fertilizer, adding weed and moss killer as necessary, followed by regular cutting for a beautiful green lawn. There is still time to split perennial plants if they have not put on too much growth, staking the ones which will grow tall. As the frost threat disappears at the end of May, bedding plants and tender plants can be planted out for a bouquet of colour. Do not forget your house plants, move them into larger pots if necessary, alternatively remove some of the old compost and top dress with new material and season long feed. Remember to dead head daffodils and tulips, to ensure all the goodness goes back into the bulb, adding additional feed to bulk them up for next year. If clumps have become too large, or have not flowered well – split

In the vegetable garden, start sowing parsnips and leeks ready for the autumn, then every two weeks sow small quantities of beetroot, lettuce, dwarf, runner and broad beans, cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower to avoid having a glut in the summer. Black florists buckets are an easy way to grow vegetables, where you do not have space in your garden. In June and July keep on top of the weeds, spray on a regular basis if troubled with rose black spot, or other fungal diseases and pests. Then enjoy the fruits of your labours in the colours you have created and the fresh fuit and vegetable to eat. talents of Farsley. It is hoped that following its launch at this year’s festival, the makers market will be a regular fixture in the village.

Last year’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations saw around 5000 people enjoying a huge street party on Farsley Town Street. Now, Farsley Festival is pleased to announce plans for an even bigger and better event! Taking place on Monday 27th May, between 1pm and 5pm, Farsley Festival 2013 will draw the Spring Bank Holiday weekend to a close by inviting the whole community to come out onto Town Street and enjoy their village in style. This event, supported by Leeds City Council’s Outer West Area Committee, is a celebration of all things Farsley; including the village’s history and heritage, the local schools, community groups, businesses, and of course the people. Plans include inflatables, arts and crafts, a mini teepee festival for the little ones, music, games and more. Everyone is invited to pack a picnic and grab a seat at one of the street party tables, or take your choice from Farsley’s many eateries. A makers market of locally produced food and crafts will occupy the car park of Sunny Bank Mills, providing refreshments and showcasing the artistic

Do you know who you are? An awful lot of people are searching for their ancestry, if the crowds at Family History Day at Pudsey Civic Hall on 27 April are anything to go by. The main hall had an array of stands offering dozens of ideas as to how to search for information, much of it in the public domain – if you know where to look. One enterprising exhibitor was Deceased Online, a central database aiming to compile a complete record of burials and cremations, inscriptions on headstones and other genealogical records. Director Jamie BurgesLumsden told Covered: “so many people have no idea exactly who might be in a family grave – there have been quite a few surprises!”

Getting started with a database

As well as the stands, there were lectures covering archives, family tree making and scrapbooking and there was even a “Tweet-up” session for tweeters to meet in person. Plenty of stalls were selling old postcards and related books, maps, stationery and software. There was local colour provided by Jackie and Graham Reed; Graham restores old cycles and Jackie has a collection of appropriate vintage clothing. Graham even demonstrated the art of mounting a penny-farthing without pitching straight over the handlebars – to the delight of onlookers. Look out for them around Pudsey – they occasionally take to the road in costume. The fair was organised by Jackie Depelle, of Your Fair Ladies. The next one in Pudsey is 10 May 2014, but there is plenty going on locally before that in the way of courses and meetings. Check the website. yourfairladies.ning.com

Finally the shoe fits! Imagine walking into a shop that smells of sugar and spice, with a carpet that bounces underfoot, a play tent in the corner for kids to dive in and out of, fantastically vivid colours, brighter than a Carnival in Summer, a basket of sweets on the counter, and the most beautiful array of children’s shoes you could ever imagine. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d wandered into a fictional place from a Roald Dahl storybook; not so, it’s Trendy Steps in Pudsey! This wonderful children’s shoe shop is nestled between some of Pudsey’s longest standing businesses on Lidget Hill, clearly visible – just look for the beautiful, brightly coloured shop frontage - Trendy Steps is owned by Pudsey residents and husband and wife team, Phillip and Sarah Parker, who after eighteen years as a couple and nine of those married, decided to open their first shop together.

And what a lovely addition to Pudsey it is! With nothing like it in the Pudsey area, Trendy Steps prides itself on being part of the local community, with support from local businesses, local residents and local schools. In store you’ll find a delightful display of beautifully crafted shoes, in exquisitely designed boxes, and Trendy Stepper: Sarah Parker names that are usually only found in pricy city centre stores including brands; Lelli Kelly, Hush Puppies Camper, Crocs Noel and Hummel - Trendy Steps has all your children’s footwear needs in your local town. Residents of Pudsey and indeed those further a field who are looking for something special should find a moment to pop in and say hi to Phil and Sarah, and if your anything like Covered, you be wonderfully amazed...

Farsley AFC Hosts Zumbathon for Cancer Relief UK Local zumba instructor Dayne Whitaker attracted around 100 zumba enthusiasts to Farsley AFC’s sports hall on 21 April. They were there to participate in a two-hour zumbathon in support of Cancer Relief UK. With participation at £5 per head, or £7 on the door, the funds raised were substantially increased by donations and further sponsorship. That very evening, Dayne reported on Facebook (zumbawithdayne) raising in excess of £2500 – and still counting! £2500 seems a remarkable return from a twohour event - maybe call it three with setting up, registration and winding down. And a day or two in the planning. Yet all the more remarkable when it’s the feel-good paying guests that are doing most of the work. Are sponsored zumbathons a way forward? The Big Lunch The Big Lunch, an annual event originally started in 2009 by the Eden Project, is coming to Calverley for the first time on the 2nd June from 12pm. Creative Calverley are encouraging Calverley based neighbours to organise their own “Big Lunch” in back gardens and streets so that they can get to know each other more and share a few hours of food, friendship and fun. Alternatively, people could plan to take a picnic that could be shared with others in Calverley (Victoria) Park and listen to the summer band music, or watch a cricket match. Invitation templates to “The Big Lunch” are available from the Creative Calverley website www. creativecalverley.co.uk/Events-And-Workshops.html “Bringing people of all ages and abilities together is one of our aims as a community organisation and we are keen to encourage this as much as possible. ‘The Big Lunch’ is an initiative which is so simple to do. All it takes is a knock on a door and a conversation inviting people to lunch.” said Creative Calverley Founder Gael Timbers.

If You Go Down to Swaine Wood Today… Swaine Wood is off to the left of Broadway, as you leave Horsforth and almost opposite Calverly Lane. If you go down to those woods today, outside work/ school hours, there’s a good chance you’ll find BMX or mountain bikers or motorcycle trialists testing themselves and their machines against the rather tricky terrain. The woods are also the official venue for club and competition evenings and weekends – which is why there are so many cars and vans sometimes parked along the verges. There were scores of vehicles parked there one Sunday afternoon in April. With youngsters around, wearing or carrying motorcycle leathers, boots, gloves and helmets. But there wasn’t any noise. What was going on? Had they all forgotten their petrol? We had to investigate. The answer was simple. All thirty bikes were battery powered - today’s advanced compact electric motors and batteries have reached such a high power to weight ratio that electric trials motorcycles are so powerful that they can offer true tests of skill in their own class. As much as 1.2kw (1.6hp) can be delivered by a bike weighing around 35 kilos, with safety options to restrict the top speed (around 20mph). Though less powerful, they are cleaner, safer, cheaper and greener than their full-blooded petrol equivalents. And you can sling them in the back of a car without fear of flooding a carburettor – or the car itself.

Trials competitors have to negotiate obstacle course without putting their feet on the ground – if they can reach that is.

That afternoon, 28 youngsters from all over the north and aged between 4 and 12 were competing over a series of short obstacle courses. For beginners, intermediates and advanced. All losing points when touching the ground with a foot - “dabbing”, as they call it. The next large Horsforth Trials Club event is at Swaine Wood on 29 May at 6.30pm. Adults and juniors, petrol and electric – an excellent opportunity for interested parties to go and find out whether the sport is for them or their children. As far as parents are concerned, and as so many remarked on the afternoon, it gets kids out in the open air and away from their Play Stations in all weathers. There are clubs located in Bradford, Horsforth, Ilkley, West Leeds and Yeadon/Guiseley – though allegiances aren’t geographical. Battery powered trials bikes cost between £700 and £1700 and hold excellent resale values. Add around £300 for safety gear. Petrol varieties cost around three times as much. Enquiries about the sport, equipment, local events and sponsorship opportunities to organiser Nigel Pearson, Trials UK, Park Centre Station Road, Horsforth – 0113 2818242.

IF TEETH COULD TALK

debris from the teeth. Thirdly, if you do have a little mishap whilst using tape it doesn’t have quite the cheese cutter effect that floss can have.

Farsley Dentist, Jon Swarbrigg, knows a thing or two about taking care of teeth. So much so, he’s written a book on the subject – ‘If Teeth Could Talk’.

Don’t Tie Yourself In Knots

Jon picks up his pen for Covered and takes a look at things from the tooth’s perspective, offering tips and advice on how you should look after your pearly whites. Let’s face it nowadays we want to keep our teeth for life! So Many Nooks And Crannies What about the areas that a tooth brush cannot reach? If you think about it, in a mouth that has teeth touching, there are a lot of areas that the bristles of a toothbrush, manual or electric, cannot reach. So, what do you do? In the majority of cases I think that the best thing is to use dental tape. If you don’t clean these areas you are missing quite a high percentage of the surface area of the teeth and gums. I’ve Heard Of Flossing But What Is Tape? Dental tape is almost the same as floss but wider and flatter. I like it for a few reasons. Firstly, it doesn’t seem to dig in your fingers as much as floss. Secondly, because is it wider it seems more efficient at lifting off the plaque

You only really need to clean in between the teeth once a day. It does not really matter when you do it but I tend to do it before I brush last thing on a night. However, if you have been to a party and had a few sherbets I would give it a miss and wait until the morning.

Top Tip Top Tip: To use dental tape efficiently and effectively you need to have a short length between your fingers, finger and thumb or thumbs (whichever is most appropriate to you) at a time. Also pull this short length tight. In this manner you have much more tactile feedback and control over the tape. You can feel when you have taken the tape through the contact and put the brakes on without traumatising the gum. You do this by having a good size length of tape and wrapping around your middle fingers to secure it.

Silverlinks Project Silverlinks is a new initiative looking at ways to support older people when they are faced with making difficult decisions around housing and care. It is a Big Lottery (in association with the Daily Mail) funded project and will run at Care & Repair in Leeds, Manchester and Bristol. Where you live can be an important factor in keeping independence in later life. The decision to move in later life may come at a difficult time, perhaps following bereavement, illness; a stay in hospital or the result of a long-term disabling condition. Having the opportunity to talk to someone who is totally impartial about possible housing options can be very beneficial in making these difficult decisions. Volunteers aged 60+ who have had to make a decision about where to live will be matched with other older people who are about to make that “do I go or do I stay” decision. The volunteers will share their experiences, be a listening ear and offer support and impartial information. Silverlinks volunteers have experience of downsizing or moving into sheltered/retirement accommodation, or perhaps of choosing to have their property adapted or repaired.

Farsley AFC Hosts Cup Final It’s a credit to Farsley AFC, the board, their secretary and the groundsman that Throstle Nest was chosen as the venue for the Evo-Stick League Doodson Cup Final on the evening of 23 April. The Cup was hotly contested between Curzon Ashton FC (Oldham) and North Ferriby United (Hull). The score didn’t reflect the amount of goalmouth activity. Although it was one goal each after twenty minutes, it remained unchanged for the rest of the half. Then until full time. Then until the end of extra time. The penalty shootout was dramatic. Of the ten taken, seven were saved – most of them quite spectacularly. North Ferriby prevailed 2-1.

If you know of someone who is about to make a decision about where to live, and who would welcome the opportunity to have an informal chat with one of our volunteers or you would like to become a volunteer, please contact Barbara Bailey on (0113) 200 9157. Wharfedale 499BC The Otley Courthouse is the venue for Celtic Connections: Echoes From The Past - an evening devoted to the lives and influences of the ancient Celts in Wharfedale. It's also a chance to hear about Rob Godfrey's new novel 'Year of the Celt: Imbolc': Wharfedale 499BC. "The ice sheets are coming, driving all before them. From the northern lands, deer, wolves and people flee the encroaching snow and ice. In their wake comes death, betrayal, love and hope. A small village of the Brigantes tribe in northern England will be changed forever. This is their story." The saga follows the fortunes of the Scefinge, whose settlement occupied the site of modern day Otley. Set against a backdrop of a changing climate and a large influx of refugees from the north escaping encroaching ice-sheets, it's a story of ordinary people struggling to survive in a rapidly changing world; only those who adapt have any hope of surviving. established folk weekend but all squeezed into one marvellous manic day. The big thing for us now is spreading the word and getting people to come along, bring their instruments, voices and ears," said one of the organisers Kathie Griffiths. Gael Timbers from the project said: "Calverley is quite a hub for talent so we're lucky to have lots we can tap into to help out. We've got a 17-year-old art student designing our fliers and posters, a lecturer who has set up a webpage, twitter and email account for us and lovely landlords opening their doors to us for informal singarounds and sessions."

The folk day is being organised by a small band of folk volunteers and is backed by the Creative Calverley project which harnesses and promotes villagers' talents. The organisers wanted to bring the feel-good festival vibe to their own doorstep.

Kath And The Kicks It’s difficult to pin West Leeds band Kath And The Kicks to one particular genre of music, so I’m going with lead singer, Kath Edmonds, definition of “alternative acoustic rock”. That hardly seems to cover it though, as they produce a diverse range of pure, bluesy-rock and thoughtful acoustic numbers, through to hard, raw rock with obvious influences from the likes of Skunk Anansie. One thing’s consistent though, and that’s the rich, unique vocals from Kath, weaving her stories and taking the audience on a musical journey, through quiet contemplation to raucous energy, not unlike the great Patti Smith. The Kicks produce a powerhouse of sound to support Kath’s vocals with strong rhythm and riffs from lead guitarist Richard Hart, fierce drumming skills from Lee Proctor and melodic, stand-alone bass by Tom Duffissey. They were recently featured in the 2013 Glastonbury Emerging Talent Contest and “Don’t Judge” received airplay on BBC Radio Leeds. The band, who mainly hail from the Horsforth, Yeadon and Guiseley area, were formed in early 2012 when former Salford University friends Kath and Rich were reunited, adding friends Tom and Lee to the mix to create

the band. Prior to that, Kath had gigged since 2004 on the Leeds’ music scene, playing solo and with other musicians. The band release their EP on 24th May when they support Nashville artist, Stacie Collins, at Bingley Arts Centre, and their music will be available online when their website is launched over the summer. They’ve played some iconic venues, like The Hope and Anchor, Islington and The Roadhouse, Manchester, but Kath And The Kicks love the local, outdoor gigs too and they’re playing at Otley Fake Fest and we caught up with them at The Owl in Rodley over the bank holiday, supporting The Four Fighters. https://www.facebook.com/KathEdmondsMusic Twitter @kathnthekicks
