Welcome to Covered. The magazine with commitment to the community. Summer marches on, albeit sporadically, but we have had the occasional sunny day. Thankfully they have coincided with some of our community events. Others have not been so lucky however, but with true Northern Grit cancellations have been few. Covered Magazine is often the only publication that attends and reports these events, even more so now that the local ‘’free-sheet’ has been discontinued. We hope that our growing list of contacts in this area will continue to invite us along to events and activities. On that note, I feel forced to reiterate one of our standard terms; that nothing in this magazine be reproduced without our express consent. I say that because a local ad-mag recently lifted and published one of our original features about a successful local business. We visited the venue, photographed and reported. If any other “local” publication wants to carry as much original content as does Covered then they really should get out (and about) a little more often. The deadline for editorial and advertising next month is 15/8/12 but please give us plenty of notice if you’d like us to attend your event.

Busy Betty
The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.
One of the great things about the recent Jubilee celebrations was that it was an opportunity to get to know our neighbours and there was a real sense of community. Wouldn’t it be great to see this community spirit continue into every-day life? I’m not talking about regular street parties, just simply thinking about your neighbours when you park your car for example... Footpaths are for feet... Many of our streets are narrow, and our older housing developments simply not designed for families with multiple cars. This gives many no alternative but to park on the road / footpath. Unfortunately when they do so, often drivers remember to leave space on the road for cars but forget about pedestrians. Anyone in a wheelchair or pushing a pram can often not get past and have no option but to venture into the road to go round the vehicle. Please bare this in mind next time your wheels mount the kerb! Kill your speed...
Community spirit is all about thinking about your neighbours. Everybody needs good neighbours, as they say, that’s when good neighbours, become good friends! I’d love to hear what you think. Love Betty

Talking of roads, I hear a rumour that some of our streets are to become 20mph zones with possibly the introduction of some ‘traffic calming’ speed bumps. I detest speed bumps as much as the next person but if these rumours prove to be true I will be delighted. Some of the streets in our neighbourhood appear to be used as race tracks! A small child or elderly person crossing the road (or going round a parked car) at the wrong time wouldn’t stand a chance!

Messing About on the Canal
All Hands On Deck! Two bramphibian water taxis recently welcomed local residents on board for a tour along the canal as part of the 8th I Love West Leeds 2012 Festival. Despite the miserable weather and persistent rain the All Hands On Deck crew proved you can still have fun messing around on the canal. Narrow boats were transformed into floating beauties with the help of artists and musicians while locals were invited to join in with all sorts of fun, from making paper boats and bath-toy boat races, to guided walks showing you what’s edible and what’s not along the canal.

Calverley’s Social Network
Following a realisation that even in a tight knit community many people never actually get to meet each other the Calverley Business Network was set up by four like-minded people (from Calverley). All of whom ran their own businesses and believed passionately in the power of real ‘networking’ - bringing people together. The whole ethos behind the CBN is for people to meet in a social, relaxed, informal environment so they can share ideas, leads and ultimately do business with the people who are on their own doorstep. One of the founding four, Helen West, told us “ It doesn’t matter what your background is,

you don’t have to own your own business – if you’ve got something to offer and the ability to help others too, then it will work.” Membership of CBN has increased from four to nearly ninety members and over the last three years, there have been a lot of friendships built, referrals and business done. Membership and meetings are free and there is no need to attend every meeting. Why not give it a go? Meetings are held at the Thornhill Arms, 18 Town Gate, Calverley, LS28 5NF on the first Tuesday of every month – 7 pm – 9.30 pm For further information, see the website http:// calverleybusinessnetwork.wordpress.com or contact Helen West on 07971 753919

Crawshaw School Strike Gold in Outdoor Pursuits!

Crawshaw School are celebrating after their team emerged victorious in a new challenge event for Outdoor Pursuits. A team of 12 year 9 students (6 boys and 6 girls) from the school made the short journey to Yeadon Tarn to take part in a city-wide challenge of Outdoor Pursuits. The was arranged in commemoration of the 2012 Olympics and involved secondary schools from across Leeds. Pudsey Market Goes Boot on a Sunday LCC runs a very tight ship when it comes to commercial boot sales and treats them as markets. Are the venue and organiser appropriate? Will it meet a genuine need, or does it detract from LCC’s own market strategy? And, once the licence is granted, commercial boots can expect regular inspections by LCC Markets, and occasional visits from Trading Standards. So, it was a feather in Bob Thompson’s cap to be granted a licence to operate on Sundays on Pudsey Market itself. Only a month old, weather permitting, the boot is running at around 20 stalls. Permission has been given for 65, though Bob thinks it will be more comfortable at a little over 50. Pitch fees are £9, free to registered charities giving a week’s notice. 18 Garden Guru Local Matters
Lawns will have suffered recently, time to get the garden fork out
Garden Guru
With Eric Wells of Horsforth Allotment and Garden Association
The very high rain fall in June and July will have washed away most of the fertilizers in your soil, so now is a good time to give your plants a boost. Using either an organic fertilizer such a blood fish or bone, alternatively a chemical fertilizer such as Growmore. Which ever option you choose, sprinkle it lightly around your plants and hoe it in to the give the roots an immediate boost.
The attacks on soft fruit by pigeons and other large birds has increased dramatically this year, which means you need to place anti bird net over all your bushes and ground crops to ensure you have something to eat at harvest time.
Your lawns will have also suffered in the wet, although if there are any damp or soggy areas, start by letting air into the roots and improving the drainage. Using your garden fork, press down hard every six inches to a minimum depth of four inches – then apply a lawn feed as directed.
July is a good month to take cuttings of most plants, both to increase your stocks and as insurance against a cold winter. As this is the start of the show season, support your local events with as many entries as possible – exhibiting is fun and a good way of making more gardening friends.
Slugs and snails are the number one menace at the moment, as they are thoroughly enjoying our current weather. So take action to protect your precious plants with either blue pellets, or egg shell, coffee grounds, grit, copper tape – or what ever works for you.

Stuart Andrew MP
Cllr Joe
Hello again,
I thought I’d begin this month by responding to a couple of Busy Betty items from the last few issues. Pedestrian Crossing: As your Councillors we are well aware of the need for a second Town Street crossing in Farsley. We have been asking the Highways Department to provide this for many years and we will continue to pursue it. Unfortunately, the current economic climate means it will be very difficult to progress in the short term. Grass cutting. This has been very badly affected by the weather (what a miserable summer it’s been so far!) and the rota of cuts has fallen behind. We do know that this has caused difficulties for some people (as well as some untidy areas) and can reassure you we are working with the contractor to catch up generally, dealing with some of the problem areas first.
The Safe and Sustainable Review into Children’s Congenital Cardiac Services has come to a close this month at a meeting which I attended in London. Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund has been fighting a very strong campaign to save the Leeds Unit from closure. Over the course of the campaign many of us in Parliament have raised grave concerns over the legitimacy of the Review with the Secretary of State for Health and Sir Neil McKay, the Chair of the JCPCT. I was therefore very disappointed to hear that the Leeds Unit has not been designated as a children’s heart surgery unit and will therefore close. This is a bitter disappointment to the parents, children and staff at the LGI who have campaigned tirelessly over the past year to save this valuable resource and I believe raises some very serious questions about the criteria which the Review has used to come to its decision. Following the announcement I was able to raise this with Ministers from the Department of Health and during a Parliamentary Question session it was confirmed an independent body will assess the outcome of the review, look at the process and make sure it was carried out correctly. The Children’s Heart Surgery Unit in Leeds provides a vital service for people living in our area and I will continue to do all I can to make sure that it stays open.
On a more positive note, we are making progress in tackling the scourge of dog fouling in our parks. A very successful ‘Action Day’ with the Dog Wardens was held in Victoria Park, Calverley. We’ve secured some extra patrols throughout the ward to take enforcement action against irresponsible dog owners that don’t clear up after their dog. One Born Every Minute is Back! Every minute, of every day, a baby is born. Yet no birth story is ever the same!
The production team wish to speak to lots of mums and dads who are expecting babies between August and November 2012. To make the new series as unique and diverse as ever, the team would love to include a great variety of birth experiences and are particularly keen to hear from you if you are planning a home birth.

A particular favourite attraction we had at the stall was ‘splat the prat’ – a set of stocks complete with sponges and cold water and one of the UKIP team sporting the mask of a leading political figure. Newsflash! Those guys aren’t popular! Young and old alike seemed to love that, although I have to say it was probably a lot more fun throwing the sponges than being on the receiving end!
UKIP member and local candidate
Greetings! Well what a terrific day we had for the Bramley Carnival – a week prior it seemed inconceivable that the event would go ahead. I know the UKIP team would like to thank everybody involved in putting the event on, especially Helen Garrand and Terry Knapton (for organising it), and all the marshals who made sure that dozens of vehicles could get in and out safely from the venue. Once we’d managed to get everything up and running, and then pinned everything down with vast quantities of pins and sticky tape, (a necessity thanks to the somewhat blustery wind), we had a great day handing out information and talking to people visiting the show, so thanks also to those that stopped by for a chat – whether you agree with UKIP Policy or not, it’s great to hear people’s opinions about their local area and beyond.
We are very much looking forward to returning next year – complete with stocks and sponges, and hope to see you there too. If it’s run half as well as it was this year, it’ll be a roaring success. 07904 091134 alistairmcdowall@gmail.com

Will you get 100% of the compensation?
Youngsters getting lost in a story
Summer Reading Challenge
Well yes, but in some cases no. Although it is true that your compensation will not be reduced by the taking of legal fees by lawyers, there is sometimes the possibility that your compensation could be reduced from 100% to 80% or even less. The legal term used for this is “contributory negligence”. This is where there is an accident, in which you suffer damage (and are awarded compensation), but because of some fault on your part, the compensation is reduced.
It’s that time of year again, the weather is There are several common situations where ‘changeable’ at best and the kids are off school and contributory negligence may affect the amount of looking for something to do – for a mere six weeks! compensation you should receive, seat belts for car drives and helmets for cyclists. Come rain or shine, families are always welcome at our local libraries and this summer they are If you are in a car accident and have failed to take encouraging children to while away the school reasonable care of your own safety i.e by not holidays by taking up a summer reading challenge. wearing a seat belt, the compensation could be The challenge involves a minimum of three visits reduced significantly. However, this would only be to the local library taking at least two books out so if the injuries you sustained were directly related each time. Prizes and sticker charts are on offer to you not wearing a seatbelt (and thus received a to encourage little readers and certificates for all “whiplash” type injury from being thrust backwards those who complete. The challenge is open to all and forwards). If, for example, you were driving and children from reception to Year 6. a tree branch fell into the car, it would be irrelevant as to whether or not you were wearing a seatbelt as the damage would have occurred anyway.
The Big Bike Ride
BARCA-Leeds has been working in West Leeds for 18 years with vulnerable children, young people and adults in our community. In order to continue their work they need help and support and would like you to join them on their fundraising cycle from Bramley to Skipton down the Leeds Liverpool canal wearing the BARCA colours of orange. The route is around 23 miles and relatively flat but you will still need some degree of fitness to take part. You must be over 13 years old and able to arrange your own transport back from Skipton. The event will take place on Saturday 29 September 2012. Registration is at 8am. To enter the bike ride you must donate a minimum of £20 to BARCALeeds. To download an application pack or to find out more please visit: barca-leeds.org/big-bike-ride
Now, cycling itself is not dangerous but cyclists are vulnerable, particularly when commuting through the busy streets of Leeds on dark winter mornings (as a number of solicitors here at Wilsons do). At these time, there is the potential for an accident with a car to occur. We have dealt with a number of such cases in the past and the injuries sustained by the cyclist can be horrific. Cyclists do not have a duty to wear a helmet when out on the road, however, if they are involved in an accident which involves head injuries, the compensation is usually reduced by at least 2025%. There is much debate between cyclists as to whether or not helmets are effective, however, when talking of compensation it definitely pays to wear one. Wilsons Solicitors www.LawOffice.co.uk

Are you one of the many people who have so many things to do that it’s all a jumbled chaos in your head and nothing really gets done properly? Or perhaps you start doing one thing and then the phone rings and you leave it half finished while you deal with something else? The best thing to do is to get all that chaos out of your head. Take a piece of paper and make a list of everything that you have to do, whether it is big or small, long term or short term. Next put the items on your list in order of priority. Give each item a number, with one being the most important. Then decide that the next day you will definitely do the first three things on your list. Any more than three and it might seem too daunting for you to even start. Don’t even think of going on to number two until you have completed number one. If you’re not sure what are the most important items, do the difficult things first i.e. the phone call you don’t want to make. You will be really

Farsley Playing it Safe Farsley AFC are the first club in the Evo-Stik divisions to buy a defibrillator following the much publicised cardiac arrest of Fabrice Muamba, which highlighted the need for such equipment. Farsley have been quick to bring in the medical equipment to provide the players with the best possible facilities to help those that suffer a cardiac arrest immediately on the field of play. The defibrillator was presented to the club’s physio Gareth Liversedge by the visiting Leeds United manager Neil Warnock ahead of the pre-season match between the two sides at Throstle Nest on July 20. A strong Leeds side won the game 5-2 on the night in front of a crowd of more than 2000 to kick-off the pre-season campaigns for both clubs.

Farsley Thumped by Strong Leeds Farsley AFC kicked off their pre-season by entertaining a strong Leeds United side in front of a crowd of more than 2,000 at Throstle Nest. Leeds fielded a formidable side in the first 45 minutes and eventually ran out 5-2 winners on the night with goals from Robbie Rodgers, Billy Paynter, Sanchez Payne and two from triallist Andy Gray. Leeds, had the lionshare of possession as was expected but a gritty Farsley side held strong for the opening half hour before Andy Gray’s deflected shot looped up over the despairing Tom Guidford in the Farsley net. The breakthrough saw the floodgates open as Leeds notched three goals in just six first half minutes to give them a 3-0 half-time lead. The second half saw a completely new Leeds XI take to the field with manager Neil Warnock taking the opportunity to give all his traveling players some game time, however, it was Farsley who started the brighter and pulled one back in the 59th minute with a goal from substitute Adam Muller from a Simeon Bambrook corner. The visiting Leeds side responded immediately though and restored their three goal advantage when the experienced Billy Paynter powered home a header from a pinpoint Ramon Nunez cross.
Eyes Wide Shut - Leeds’ Third Goal (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
At 4-1 many would have forgiven the hosts for falling apart but Neil Parsley’s side continued to battle and even gave the home fans something to cheer when midfielder Ryan Watson found the bottom left corner from 25 yards with a expert strike. Chances continued to come for both sides as the game entered the latter stages, but it was Sanchez Payne who stole the show late on as his cut in from the left and curled home an almost identical goal to Watson in the final minute.

PSL Host Farsley
Two teams from our area came face-to-face in the Bradford Cricket League First Teams Division One as Pudsey St Lawrence hosted Farsley. Pudsey St Lawrence openers Charlie Waite and Mark Robertshaw wasted no time in getting runs onto the board as they tried to rattle off as many runs as possibly before the rain set in. Waite racked up a mightily impressive 83 while fellow strike partner Robertshaw [pictured] was also in deadly form as he notched 70 runs. The Pudsey side who currently sit 3rd and just two points from 2nd declared at 204-4 after 38 overs and ushered struggling Farsley into bat as the dark and ominous clouds loomed overhead. Farsley struggled to get a foothold in the match with Pudsey desperate to record a win before the rain fell. However some resurgent and fighting spirit from Farsley batsman Joe Greaves who grabbed his half century kept the visitors in the game before the heavens opened and the match was eventually abandoned. Farsley reached 1125 at close of play and were awarded 7 points, while PSL were given 11 points with them in the command before the weather reeked havoc.

Rodley CC Withdraw From Division Ben clutches hold of his piece of Olympic history (Photo: Jake Harvey)
Olympic Torch Relay Pudsey’s Ben Cropper etched his name into the history books when he carried the Olympic Torch as it past through our region. Ben, 21, transported the flame for a leg in Bradford cheered on by hundreds who flooded the streets to see the relay in action. The recent graduate from Leeds Trinity University College suffered heartache at first when he was offered the chance but received the e-mail too late and had his place revoked. However, after a close friend nominated him again with an inspirational story, Ben was offered a lifeline. Ben can now claim to hold a piece of history with his Olympic Torch taking pride of place at his home and will forever remember the part he played in the Olympic Games as they return to London for the first time in 64 years. “It was a real honour to carry the Olympic Torch. Until I had carried it I hadn’t realised that the excitement ahead of the games was so widespread. I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me to achieve such a feat, none more so than Carol Russell who submitted the successful nomination, much to my surprise.” Sports fanatic Ben will now head down to several events in London to watch some of world’s best in action in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games; “I can’t wait, since I carried the torch I’ve been counting down the days. Fingers crossed now that Team GB enjoys great success and that we host the best Olympics to date.”
Rodley CC progressed in the Premier Cup after they beat Tong Manor by an incredible 107 runs to reach the semi-finals. Rodley batted first and racked up an impressive 203 runs with opening batsman Gary Sagar collecting a solid 57 runs to help his side make the next round. Meanwhile Gary Walton was menacing in his limited amount of overs, taking three wickets in just five overs. The only other fixtures that the side played in against 3rd placed New Wortley in the league and 4th placed Shipley Providence. The encounter with New Wortley was abandoned before the end due to a downpour but Rodley were the happier of the two sides as they teetered on defeat at 76 for 6 chasing a target of 151 before play was halted. Coming up for Rodley was a set of very winnable matches against sides in the lower echelons of the Yorkshire Dales Council ‘A’ Division. However, the side will not be competing again this season after withdrawing from the remainder of this season. Rodley were also due to play the Premier Cup semifinal and were hoping to book themselves into the final but will not compete under the circumstances. A league meeting has been scheduled with a number of clubs and more information will be released in due course. Calverley Community Cinema
