Making a Power of Attorney Sometimes people wish to plan ahead and set out in advance what they would like to happen should they become unable to make decisions for themselves in the future. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is an important legal document that enables a person who has capacity and is over 18 (Donor) to choose another person or people (Attorney(s)) to make decisions on their behalf. There are 2 different types of LPAs: •
•
A property and affairs LPA is for decisions about finances, such as selling the Donor's house or managing their bank account; and A personal welfare LPA is for decisions about both health and personal welfare, such as where to live, day-to-day care or having medical treatment.
An Attorney is appointed to make decisions as if they were the Donor themselves. An Attorney must act in the Donor's best interests and have regard to the Code of Practice. An LPA must be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) before it can be used. An unregistered LPA will not give the Attorney any legal powers to make a decision for the Donor. The Donor can register the LPA while they have capacity, or the Attorney can apply to register the LPA at any time. Wilsons can give you advice and prepare the necessary documents from £399 plus VAT. There is also a registration fee payable to the Government of £130 (however if in receipt of a guaranteed pension credit, this will be exempt). Contact Tina O'Brien on 0113 236 2333

Hello and welcome to edition 8 of Covered – the magazine with commitment to the community. This month we take a glimpse at Otley Folk Festival. Otley is slightly out of our distribution area (for now – we’re launching there soon!) but the festival is a nationally recognised event, so it was well worth our team taking a trip there. If you get the chance next year then go along! ‘In Bloom’ volunteers and the businesses that support the initiative have recently been rewarded with a trip to the John Charles centre for a presentation. From a simple hanging basket outside a shop to the development of flowerbeds on otherwise plain grass verges, the ‘In Bloomers’ do a great job of helping our community look that little bit better every year. Volunteers and businesses are always welcome to join. Busy Betty tells us of her anger at potholes – if there is a crater in the road in your part of the world then contact us and we’ll send Betty round and highlight it to your local councillors and highways department and ask them to deal with it. Betty’s not happy about dogs in our parks either. Let us know what you think. If you, your business or any organisation you’re involved with has any special plans for the festive season (yes, it’s nearly here!) then please let me know about them. We’ll attend, support and report as many events as possible and we may be able to offer some free exposure. The advertising and editorial deadline for the next edition is 9/11/12 so please get in touch soon. Until next month,
Chris Barnham Editor

Busy Betty
The views of Busy Betty are not necessarily those of the publisher.
October has been a wet month! And don’t we know it! This month I was unfortunate to be walking along the street at just the wrong moment. A passing car almost disappeared into a pothole! Both car and driver escaped unhurt (I suspect the driver was completely oblivious!). But I was almost drenched from the waist down! Had ‘Betty Junior’ been in his pushchair that day, rather than in my arms, he may well have been washed away by the tsunami! In an ideal world it would be fantastic to see the council step in and repair the huge crevices in our roads. In the meantime I ask drivers to keep in mind not only other road users but those on the footpaths too. If there’s a puddle it may well be deeper than you think! Also this month I’ve been talking to some of you to see what you’d like changed in our area. One point that has come up time and time again is the issue of dog-fouling. While most dog-owners clear up after their four-legged friends, some STILL don’t! There is a small area of grassland next to one of our local schools, a popular dog-walking area despite being right next to a playground. Of course, dogwalkers will argue that they are not doing anything wrong, after all there is no sign to say that dogs are not welcome in this area. But again, (like the drivers who are splashing pedestrians), all I ask is that dogowners keep in mind that there are lots of children likely to be using a play area. Why not walk your dog somewhere a little further from the beaten track?
While dogs are not permitted within play areas, owners often allow them to foul immediately outisde the vicinity
Finally, my friend on Bagley Lane claims that the road-works on her street result in her freeview TV not working. Neighbours using SKY and cable appear to be unaffected. Has anyone else had this problem?! I look forward to hearing from you Love Betty

Westroyd Infant School, Springbank and Farsley Farfield. Councillor Andrew Carter, Chair of Farsley Business Forum, visited each school; "Thanks must go to the schoolchildren at Springbank, Westroyd and Farfield, as well as to local shopkeepers, for the wonderful display of scarecrow - over 70 in total. It was great to see so many people coming to look at them. It marked yet another milestone in our efforts to promote Farsley Town Street.”
Ruben Hughes (with friends) who said the event was ‘Amazing’.
Farsley’s First Scarecrow Festival Local businesses were delighted with the success of Farsley’s first Scarecrow Festival held over two days at the end of September. All different shapes and sizes adorned Town Street thanks to the imagination and hard work of Farsley Business Forum.
Local Dad Steve Hughes attended the event with sons Ruben and Max; “The atmosphere on Farsley Town Street is fantastic. It’s a great community event!” Ruben and Max, pupils of Westroyd and Springbank, added that they had enjoyed being part of the event and helping to make scarecrows at their schools. Ruben; ‘It’s amazing. Our scarecrow really does look like Usain Bolt!’ Trail maps and raffle tickets were available from local shops and businesses. The event concluded with a raffle draw which included prizes of up to £100 to spend in local shops.
This was the first event of its kind. After this year’s great success many hope that it will become a Schools got involved. There were entries from regular event.

Cllr Joe Marjoram Cllr. Joe Marjoram Calverley and Farsley
Hello again, As many of you will be aware the council has received a planning application for 400 houses at Kirklees Knoll, Farsley. Cllr Carter and I have opposed this and would urge you to do likewise. I’ve set out our reasons for objecting below. We are currently working with Council Officers to identify a number of sites throughout the ward for small scale development. We understand that many of you want to continue to live locally and that house building is an important part of the local economy. But the large scale development of one site prevents us from satisfactorily completing the work we’ve started. The highways infrastructure is totally inadequate to accommodate an extra 400 dwellings, the majority of which would access the site via Bagley Lane – Rodley and Farsley, Town Street Farsley, and Calverley Lane. All local schools are currently full, and likely to remain so for a number of years to come. Therefore there is insufficient education provision in the area. Recently approval was given to the development of over 500 houses on the Clariant/Sandoz site, off the Ring Road. This development will have a major impact on the area, and make the Kirklees Knoll site in Farsley even more unsustainable. Kirklees Knoll is high quality pasture land, currently leased to a local farmer. It is not redundant green space, but a vital part of the green environment. It also provides the last remaining separation of the historic communities of Rodley, Bagley and Farsley. This in itself is worth preserving. You can find details of the planning application on the leeds.gov.uk website in the planning portal. Please join us in campaigning to protect this area of land.
Stuart Andrew MP Recently I was fortunate enough to visit the Horsforth Farmers’ Market at the Grove Methodist Church, the finale event of Hope in Horsforth’s fortnight of celebrations and activities in our local community. A constituent involved with the organisers, Horsforth Churches Together contacted me several months ago to tell me of the plan to coordinate two weeks of events including theatre and quizzes and I thought it a wonderful idea. Visiting the stands at the Farmers’ Market offered visitors the opportunity to find out more about community and global projects which the local churches are involved with, a host of wonderful and tempting local produce and it was great to see so many people from the community supporting this project. Two local schools joined in on the festivities, competing to design a new ‘Prayer and Peace’ garden in Horsforth and it was clear that the children had worked very hard on most imaginative designs and themes, showcasing the best of the town. I was delighted to discover that, due to the success of Hope in Horsforth, the Farmers’ Market will now become a regular feature near Horsforth library. I hope that this is the first of many such events as it is a valuable opportunity for the community to come together to celebrate our local producers, churches and schools.

Calverley Beaver Scouts Charity Bike Ride 2nd Calverley Beaver Scouts have been busy raising money for charity by taking part in a Sponsored bike and scooter ride around Calverley's Victoria Park. The Beavers were fantastic and managed to raise £338.20 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charities. Kerry Garner from the YAA came to a Beaver Colony meeting and was presented with a cheque and a collage of sketches of Yorkshire Air Ambulances to take back to her office. Kerry gave a short presentation showing how the YAA is so essential in our community attending accidents and

Sunny Bank Art Exhibitions In September, Sunny Bank Mill opened their doors to welcome art lovers to an exhibition entitled 'The September Show - Five Northern Artists'. The event was the brain-child of Farsley resident and artist Mel Davies. Originally Mel’s idea was to convert the much loved former cloth warehouse into a gallery for a weekend. Due to the overwhelming success of the exhibition, the show continued for a further four days. Artists L to R Kim Coley Eric Moss Mel Davies and Chris Moss The warehouse has been transformed into a bright and airy gallery space flooded with natural light. White walls, original architectural features, exposed for the community. We are delighted to see more structural elements, excellent views (both inside and and more people coming to Sunny Bank Mills’. out) and a fascinating past; this is a gallery that any city would be proud of. For details of opening times or to learn more about the artists involved please visit The exhibition included a wide range of work by www.sunnybankmills.co.uk artists; John Newdick; Chris Moss; Mel Davies; Eric Moss and Kim Coley.
Currently, the gallery is displaying the works of established Leeds artist, Shane Green. Calverley residents may regocnise one of his most recent works as he was responsible for the carved timber Angel now resident outside St. Wifrids Church. The exhibition will be on display until 23 Nov and Shane Green may be available at weekends to answer questions and to talk about his work. Site Manager, Michael Whitaker said ‘We’re very excited to see the mills becoming a real focal point

CAKES FOR KIDS - FOR FREe Blowing out the candles on a birthday cake is the stuff of classic childhood memories - and today’s photo opportunities. It’s a childhood birthday ritual just as special and memorable as the party games, cards and gifts. Most children should have a cake on their birthday. Home made or shop bought, it doesn’t matter. But sometimes it just doesn’t happen. There are families who, for whatever reason, find it very difficult to provide a cake for their child on the day. This is where the charity Free Cakes For Kids UK comes in. Volunteer bakers within the community give up their time and skills to bake a birthday cake where one might be needed. For example, Pudsey resident and passionate baker Rachel Askey recently made a “Superman” cake for a six year old boy who is carer for an immediate relative; “I loved baking this cake for a very special boy and I really hope it brought a smile to his face.” Rachel explained that this is the precise reason she volunteered for the Leeds branch of Free Cakes For Kids UK in the first place - to help create these happy moments for children.

Woodhall Hills Golf Club Beer Festival There was a lively atmosphere at Woodhall Hills Golf Club, Calverley, recently as the golf club hosted its own three day beer festival. With over twenty real ales and a selection of ciders there was something for everyone. For a minimal entry fee, drinkers were also treated to a generous smorgasbord and three nights of live music. The event was open to members and non-members alike.
Drinkers at Woodhall Hill Golf Club’s Beer Fesitval…..some on soft drinks only of course!
Local band Motor City Blues kicked off the entertainment on the first evening with blues, rock and soul. They were followed by soul singer Janet Jaye. On the final day of the festival the musical baton was handed to fabulous Horsforth talent 18 year old Jack Howard - who has been likened to Ed Sheeran. The beer festival coincided with a gent’s only two day competition. The first day of the tournament saw 92 pairs compete and was won by Richard Jagger and Chris Benton, both members of Woodhall Hills Golf Club. The second day saw thirty teams taking part. Again, Richard Jagger was one of the members of the winning team alongside his fellow club members Tom Benton, Chris Jerome and Chris Dunne. Woodhall Hills Golf Club hopes that the event may have attracted the attention of non-members who might like to join. With its backdrop of fabulous views and a varied mix of water hazards,
strategic bunkers and tree lined fairways, the course is designed to be enjoyable while also being challenging for players of all levels. Contact Mark Romans on 0113 2554594.
Pudsey Wedding Fayre Brides-to-be gathered at Pudsey Parish Church earlier this month for the church’s second annual Wedding Fayre. Lead Organiser and florist Beverley Stephenson explained that the idea for the fayre came from a desire to promote not only the church as a wedding venue but also to help promote local businesses and give couples ideas and inspiration for their special day. Future bride Jessica Fieldhouse said ‘The fayre has been great. I’ve been getting loads of ideas for my wedding in 201. Her mum added “It’s also been great for getting ideas for budgets too!’ Part of the event included two fashion shows with many of the models being local volunteers expertly demonstrating a stunning array of dresses and accessories. All the dresses featured in the show
One of the dresses from the fayre’s fashion show (Photo: Paula Brown - www.ollievision.co.uk)
were available from Oxfam. Many of the future brides were pleasantly surprised to discover that over 95% of Oxfam’s stock is brand new - unworn dresses donated by designers or bridal shops when they change their stock over at the end of the season.

Otley Folk Festival 2012 Otley Folk Festival is an important event in the British folk music and dance calendar. The 21st Festival, from 20-23 September, didn’t disappoint. Mind you, it never should. Strategically placed after the end of the summer season, performers and followers are less likely be juggling priorities. The 2012 event had around sixty musical acts appearing in nine ticketed venues. Plus other scheduled events in a dozen pubs and Morris dancers in the streets. Additional free and impromptu sessions at those venues, and others, meant that our photographer didn’t know which way to turn – apart from the Sunday afternoon. The massed and very visual gathering of Morris dancers at The Cross Pipes was a photographer’s delight.

Slimmer Speaks About Success Meet Alison Hockney, She is Pudsey's Slimming World Women of the Year 2012. Alison has lost 6 stone in 57 weeks with the help of her Slimming World mentor Sarah Parker, who is a Gold Consultant. Alison told us: “When I first joined Slimming World in March 2011 I felt nervous and embarrassed but Sarah put me at ease and I quickly realised that lots of other people had felt like I did. The warm, encouraging and supportive environment of the group soon put me at ease, helping me make great food choices and getting fantastic weight loss results. I took it a week at a time, making little changes here and there. With help and support from my new friends in the group and my consultant I was able to lose weight by enjoying unlimited amounts of free foods, no weighing or measuring, I even adapted our family favourites so we'd all benefit from eating healthier. Previously people had ignored me - I just wasn’t noticed. As I started to lose the weight that changed too, people were genuinely interested in what I had to say. I was given an opportunity to further my career, given more responsibility at work and life in general seemed easier. I was more confident and positive; the
Alison Hockney before and after

Extension of Permit Parking and Traffic Restrictions in Farsley Since car parking fees were increased at the Pudsey Civic Hall, more and more employees from the Green Flag complex and adjacent offices have taken to parking on the surrounding residential streets. This has been one of the major factors that prompted the proposed extension of the Resident Permit Parking in Farsley. As well as extending the existing permit parking arrangements on Richmond Road and Cote Lane, there will also be increased waiting restrictions in the proximity of Farfield Primary School. In an effort to improve safety around the school, the existing ‘Keep Clear’ markings may be replaced with Traffic Regulation Orders. Some of the residents who will be affected by the parking permits have expressed their satisfaction with the proposals. ‘We are tired at having to negotiate through the cars parked on both sides of the road, clogging the street’ said one resident. However, the increased restrictions to parking outside Farfield School have been met with a mixed response. While everybody welcomes increased road safety, Kath Horner, a mother of a child at Farfield School, pointed out that some parent parking was essential. ‘It’d be great if everyone was able to walk to school and leave their cars at home, but it’s just not feasible’ she said, ‘Parents often drop their children at school on the way to work’. Kath, who lives in Rodley added ‘It’d be fantastic to be able to walk to school, but sadly, parents in Rodley don’t have

GREAT WINTER REDUCTIONS ON LEISURE AND COUNTRY WEAR
Techie Tips Feeling the need to buy a new computer or laptop? Please stop and consider this. All Windows computers slow down over time, but it’s usually simple to correct. Perhaps you purchased a budget model? Fitting more memory (RAM) will give your machine new legs. Cost £20-£40 Have you ever noticed that there’s never an instruction manual telling you how to look after Windows? Whether it’s XP, Vista or 7, Windows needs attention to keep it running efficiently, but the retailers, manufacturers and Microsoft don’t bother to tell you this. They rely on you becoming frustrated with a slow computer and buying a new one. They want you to think of your computer as just another domestic appliance, like a fridge. If it doesn’t work how you want, you buy another. This is like buying a new car because the oil needs changing. Good for the retailers, bad for your pocket. Learning a little about servicing Windows is a sound investment, but if technical stuff is not your thing, do what you do with your car – have it serviced, at least once a year, and preferably every six months. At the very least, Google for how to defragment the hard drive and how to do a virus scan. You do have an anti-virus don’t you? Keep it clean! The cooling fans draw in dust, which gets stuck inside the casing. This causes slowdowns, overheating and it can kill a laptop. It’s easily blown away, a bit like your budget!

Otley and Wharfedale Macmillan Cancer Support Doing Their Bit in Yeadon Macmillan organised a nationwide coffee morning (and afternoon) on Friday 28 September. Yeadon Town Hall was the contribution by the local fundraising committee. The day included snacks and cakes and around a dozen craft oriented stalls, some rented out to small local enterprises. The day raised in excess of £1100. Otley and Wharfedale Macmillan Cancer Support’s next events will be coffee mornings on 24 November at Yeadon Town Hall and 7 December at Horsforth Grove Methodist Church. They have geographical responsibility for the whole of Wharfedale and are looking to strengthen ties in Pudsey and immediate surrounds. Anyone wishing to offer donations or other support, including suggestions of suitable premises for coffee mornings, should contact Chair Katharine Jex on 07709 300613.

A team of local volunteers recently gathered in Pudsey for the town’s second annual Apple Harvest. The "Community Cropping" event involved picking and juicing apples and pears from local gardens. The event was organised by local community group, Pudsey Local Sustainability Enterprise (PuLSE), with equipment loaned by Leeds Urban Harvest Pudsey locals with trees that needed picking were encouraged to get in touch with the group. Organiser Helen Sims said ‘The idea came from trying to promote sustainability as well as seeing Pudsey in a different way. It’s a great way of getting to know people and our area better’. She went on to add ‘Unfortunately the apple harvest nationally is bad this year due to the unusual weather... but it’ll still be great fun and everyone should go home with a bottle or two of freshly squeezed apple juice!’ As well as apple harvesting, other events organised by PuLSE have included a community seed swap at the Pudsey Park Bandstand, gardening classes and gardening events children at Greenside School, Pudsey. The group has recently been in discussion with Leeds City Council Parks and Countryside regarding the development of a ‘forest garden’. This would be a small-scale, low maintenance, but hopefully highly productive grouping of useful and edible plants in Queens Park as part of their new ‘Feed Leeds’ initiative. If you are interested in finding out more join PuLSE at their meetings. The group meet at Pudsey Leisure Centre on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Or contact foodinpudsey@gmail.com

Leeds in Bloom Successes for Horsforth and Pudsey North West Leeds fared better than ever in this year’s Leeds in Bloom Awards at John Charles Centre in September. As usual, Horsforth stole the show. But this year also saw strong recognition of the efforts made in Calverley, Farsley and Pudsey.

The Pudsey in Bloom delegation
Of all the awards, the one that deserves special mention is one made to Gerry Ingham of Horsforth in Bloom. Not the one he collected on behalf of his church, nor the one he collected for Horsforth itself. It was a special award made personally to him in recognition of his tireless service to Leeds in Bloom in general - and Horsforth in Bloom in particular.

Leeds Carnegie will be hoping to get their hands on the military backed Yorkshire Regiment Trophy
Leeds Carnegie Coach backs new Yorkshire Regiment Trophy Three of the Yorkshire region’s top clubs have come together to create a new competition which will determine which is the strongest rugby union side in the County. The new competition has been backed by the regions’ military and it is hoped that through their sponsorship the game can grow within Yorkshire. The competition will take the format of a three team league which runs within the RFU Championship. The three teams taking part, namely Leeds Carnegie, Rotherham Titans and Doncaster Knights, will play each other home and away, each win earning four points with extra try-scoring bonuses available. Leeds Carnegie Head Coach Diccon Edwards spoke exclusively to Covered Magazine stating that he thought the new initiative was “A real positive for the game in Yorkshire”. Speaking of the benefits in terms of team morale, he added “It’s great to have a genuine trophy for the best team in the county to
get at the end of the season, and we want to be the number one club in the county.” Carnegie has also announced that three of their home games this season will be taken to different venues around the region. Edwards has stated that this is crucial for the development of the club’s brand if it is to grow in the future, something with which he hopes the new trophy will assist. “Going on the road is about taking experiences away from Headingley and creating a big occasion for those who have not necessarily experienced a game of rugby union before. We want a big occasion and hope that we can bring those fans back to Headingley in the future.”

Rodley Rockets First Team Aiming to Turn Season Around
Struggling Rodley in action at home to West Bowling A, a game they lost 58-4
After a disastrous start to the campaign in which Rodley Rockets’ senior side have lost all four of their opening league fixtures, many at the club will be hoping that the next month brings about a change in fortune. The Rockets currently lie second bottom in the Pennine ARL-Division 6, a league which is unchartered territory for them having only been drafted into it at the beginning of this campaign.
to do so they must tighten up their defence having conceded a staggering 210 points thus far, while only managing to score 68.
In the third game of the campaign the Rockets were narrowly beaten by only two points 36-34 against Whitworth Spartans. It is on such fine margins that seasons change and the Rockets will be hopeful that they can sneak a win sooner or later. In order
Rodley will be looking to kick start their season with a noteworthy scalp in the coming weeks. They will be keen to prove that they are worthy of their place in the new division and there will be no bigger catalyst for that than a maiden league win.
One positive for Rodley is that they are not the only side without a win and if you look at the league table as a whole they are only one victory away from climbing the ladder significantly.

Farsley Firing on all Cylinders Farsley AFC have turned around their disappointing start to the Evo Stik Division 1 North with a string of successive wins but suffered cup agony, crashing out of the F.A Cup, F.A Trophy and the County Cup. The side climbed up to 3rd place in the table, beating Ossett Town, Garforth Town, Prescot Cables and demolishing Wakefield. Neil Parsley’s side have been majestic in the league, thrashing Ossett Town 4-0 at Throstle Nest and securing a 5-0 triumph away at struggling Wakefield. Farsley will hope that their fine form continues as they face high fliers Clitheroe twice, and host a mid-table trio of Cammell Lairds, Curzon Ashton and Trafford. Farsley’s league performances have come as no surprise following the acquisitions of defenders James Riley and Matt Dempsey, both joined the club following their release from Blue Square North new-boys Bradford Park Avenue. Dempsey got his time with Farsley off to a flier, notching twice from
