Changes to employment law with Early Conciliation For employees wanting to bring an employment claim, Early Conciliation (EC) has been introduced by ACAS to establish whether a resolution can be reached prior to commencing proceedings. This will save time and costs for both respondents and claimants. It will be a legal requirement for any tribunal claims lodged on or after 6 May 2014 for claimants (current or former employees) to notify ACAS of their intention to bring a claim to the employment tribunal before they can submit an ET1 claim form (unless an exemption applies). The process begins with the EC form being presented to ACAS by the claimant. ACAS will then attempt to liaise with both the claimant and the respondent (or their representatives) for up to one calendar month to see if the issues can be resolved without a claim being formally lodged. Conciliation is however voluntary and there is no legal requirement on either party to enter into it. • If settlement can be reached then ACAS will ask for settlement wording and record this on a legally binding agreement. • If settlement cannot be reached then ACAS will issue an EC certificate, which a claimant will require in order to submit an employment tribunal claim. EC will also affect the timescale for claimants to lodge claims. Generally a claimant has three months from the date of the act complained of to lodge an employment tribunal claim. When the claimant contacts ACAS via an EC form this will pause the time limit for presenting their claim to an employment tribunal and they will effectively gain an extension. If you are commencing a claim or are contacted by ACAS regarding an attempt at EC we have a dedicated employment team who can assist you.

Editor’s Letter

Hello and welcome to this month’s Covered – the magazine for the Leeds suburbs. You may have noticed that we’ve increased our distribution….again! We deliver to more properties in the LS postcodes than any other publication but there are still thousands that we’re unable to reach - our distribution team’s little legs will only go so fast. I’m often asked where people can pick up a copy and I usually point them in the direction of the local libraries, post offices, pubs and bars. That’s about to change as we will now have additional pick up points situated in high footfall supermarkets and convenience stores – you’ll start noticing these over the coming weeks and months. Rather than reduce our door-todoor distribution and see regular recipients miss out, I decided to increase our print run to ensure that we can reach thousands of new readers too. My accountant will be livid but the Disclaimer The opinions expressed in Covered do not necessarily reflect those of the editor, publisher or their agents. Whilst every reasonable care is taken to ensure the accuracy of information included within this publication, the publisher takes no responsibility for errors or omissions in Covered.

many community organisations and businesses that rely on Covered to spread their message will benefit tremendously, and that’s what this magazine is all about. I hope you enjoy reading another packed edition. As always, I’m keen to hear your thoughts about Covered so please do drop me a line with any feedback. The deadline for editorial submissions and listings in our Really Useful Guide is 04/06/14. The advertising deadline is 06/06/14. Until next month,

Crafthouse Crafthouse is billed as "a unique dining atmosphere in the heart of Leeds," which seems a fitting introduction to this elegant and serene restaurant perched high in the rooftops of the new Trinity shopping centre. Access is by lift, directly from Boar Lane, or via Trinity Leeds and you are soon transported away from the hustle and bustle of the shoppers below. This classy restaurant has obviously been designed with quality in mind and the attention to detail is superb. At first glance, it may just look like a tasteful fusion of varying materials in

shades of grey, black and brown but as you settle in, and allow your eye to wander, it becomes apparent that it's all a very subtle representation of the area's rich, industrial heritage; woven seats, stainless steel knives from Sheffield and threaded room dividers, reminiscent of the great weaving looms once operating in mills throughout

Leeds. And that's not the only Yorkshire connection... all of the produce here has been sourced from within a 60 mile radius and suppliers are hand picked by Head Chef, Lee Bennett. Lee, himself, was born in Yorkshire and has worked in restaurants throughout the world, from London to Singapore. After training under such well respected names as Gordon Ramsey and Pierre Gagniare, Lee has returned to Yorkshire to lead the team of some 20 chefs who work at Crafthouse and its sister venue, Angelica, and he describes the food on offer here as "good, honest food cooked properly." The menus are seasonal and include an a la carte selection, fixed price or tasting menu. Starters include smoked salmon served on a warm potato pancake, asparagus with breaded duck egg or Bridlington Bay bisque. Main courses are equally varied and range from Denby

Dale lamb shoulder to seabass or a goat's cheese, pea and bean risotto. Another popular option at Crafthouse is the Josper Oven, which grills meat and seafood at an incredible 480 degrees centigrade over charcoal, creating a unique taste. Selections include steaks, pork chops and king prawns. There is a children's menu available and

a really intensive wine selection which even details organic wines. And if you struggle to choose a dessert, you could always opt for the Crafthouse Dessert Selection for two to share, offering such delights as pistachio soufflĂŠ, vanilla and mango cheesecake or valhrona dulcey chocolate dome. For those looking for a truly original dining experience,

Crafthouse offers the exclusive Chef Counter experience. Afforded an uninterrupted view of the kitchen and bar area, you will receive special attention, not only from the chefs, but from the sommelier, cocktail mixologists and waiting staff whilst enjoying a bespoke 5 course tasting menu. The restaurant offers 144 covers but still manages to feel intimate, and is open for lunch and dinner, giving views across the city from most tables, including from a dedicated outdoor terrace which is flanked by swaying trees and potted plants adjacent to the glass domed rooftop of Leeds Trinity. To the other side sits Holy Trinity Church, with it's distinguished bell tower sitting alongside the restaurant. Events can be catered for and there is a private dining room available which can seat up to 14 people. Crafthouse is a popular venue though and booking is advisable. www.crafthouse-restaurant.com

Covered Smoked Salmon with Potato Pancake Serves 4 The perfect steak

9

cookbook

200g long sliced quality smoked salmon, 200g mashed potato, 1 egg, Salt 2 tbsp milk (warm), 2 tbsp double cream (warm), 1tbs plain flour, 4 egg whites, Crème fraiche

With the mashed potato still hot, fold in the flour, then the milk and cream, then the eggs one by one and season. Whisk up the egg whites in a separate bowl until they form soft peaks and fold into stage one using a spatula. Take small frying pan and heat up with a little oil, before pouring in the mix and cooking in the oven at 180oc for 8 minutes. Whilst still hot, take ¼ of the smoked salmon and place onto each pancake and finish with a teaspoon of crème fraiche. • Try to buy ‘aged-beef’- it is firmer than non-aged and has less moisture content. The reduced moisture helps tenderise the meat and concentrate flavour. • You don’t always need to get the most expensive cut. Opt for a good rump from a reputable butcher for plenty of flavour. If you buy well you don’t always need the finest cut. • Let the meat reach room temperature before cooking. It will cook more evenly throughout if the same temperature throughout. • Simple seasoning is best – before cooking season thoroughly with coarse salt. • Heat is key to cooking your steak – a hot grill will char the meat and seal in the flavour. • Forget the oil – oil can cause fire flare up and can change the flavour. If the cooking surface is hot enough the steak shouldn’t stick. • Most grills have different hot spots. If you rotate the meat you’ll ensure it cooks evenly. • Allow it to rest for a minimum of 2/3 minutes. This will allow the juices to settle and the meat to reach it’s final tenderness as the temperature evens. • Clean your grill. Don’t think that by leaving it you’re leaving a layer of juices for next time – it’ll just burn on and affect the flavour. If you can, clean it whilst it’s warm as any fat will clean more easily.

Chocolate Fondant

Serves 8

280g Dark chocolate (64%), 150g Butter, 170g Sugar, 4 Eggs, 60g Plain flour

Melt the chocolate and butter in a bain-marie (a bowl resting over a pan with water in – avoids burning) Whisk together the sugar and the eggs. Add this mixture to the chocolate and butter mixture. Whisk in the flour. Butter and flour your moulds or ramequin (to stop the mix from sticking) Pipe 80 to 100g of mixture into each mould. Bake for around 9-10 minutes at 180˚C. To Finish, Coat the fondant with warm chocolate sauce. Make a quenelle of caramel or serve with vanilla ice cream.

Birdlife in your garden

of year, avoid whole peanuts or peanut chunks, which can choke young birds. If you are lucky, in spring, you may also see or hear migrant birds from Africa, such as chiffchaffs, willow warblers and blackcaps. These birds are largely insect feeders with finer bills than finches, for example, so do not come to garden feeders as readily. Growing flowering plants which attract insects will be of most help to them.

Spring is a time of frenzied activity for the wildlife in your garden. Nesting, defending territories and feeding young use up a lot of energy, and the food you provide can be a lifeline for the adult birds (the chicks need to take in water with their food, so need juicy caterpillars rather than seeds). Every garden is different, and the birds you see will depend very much on where you are and on the natural resources in and around your garden. Some birds will feed at feeders (tits, finches and sparrows), whilst others find it difficult to perch, and prefer to feed on the ground (blackbirds, dunnocks, thrushes). Ideal foods are sunflower hearts, seed mixes,

Avoid too much bread which can act as an ”empty filler”, and anything salty (e.g. salted bacon) as salt can be toxic to birds. This time

June is bursting out all over, as the old song goes, and colour is really starting to show all over the garden. Two essential tasks, keep the hoe going to take out all your weeds on a regular basis. Then if your soil is heavy, lift your tulip and hyacinths after they have died down and store them in a cool dry area. Large clumps of daffodils will not flower well when congested, so lift, divide, and replant every few years to rejuvenate these lovely flowers. In order to maintain a good show of summer bulbs, it is essential to feed them with a high potash feed (tomato food) after dead heading to build the bulbs up for the following year. If frost has really gone, finish planting out summer bedding together with any tender exotic plants. Give your indoor plants a summer holiday by placing them outside and remembering to water and feed them as necessary. As your perennial flowers, like lupins, poppies etc. finish flowering, cut off all the dead flowers to encourage a second flush. Pinch out the tops of chrysanthemums to make them bush out, which will encourage them to produce more flowering stems for a really impressive show.

During late June, apple and pear trees experience the June Drop, which means the trees naturally shed excess fruit when there are too many fruits to ripen. If you still see clusters of tiny fruit after this event you can thin the fruits further to make sure all the remaining fruits will grow to a decent size. Remove any raspberry suckers which are growing at a distance from the main row and tie in new growth on blackberry canes as these will produce fruit next year. Trim your privet and other fast growing hedges after first checking there are no birds nesting in them. The HAGA Trading Hut is open 7pm - 8pm every Friday, and Saturday 10.30am - 12pm during May. Hope Pastures Fashion Evening at Weetwood Hall The evening of Friday 28 March saw a charity fashion show with a difference at Weetwood Hall on the north Leeds ring road. Lorraine Esteban of Hope Pastures, a horse and donkey sanctuary, had collaborated with Jane Thompson, owner of Harriet’s of Otley, Hair by Dmand of Adel and some professional and volunteer models to stage a James Bond themed fashion evening. Lorraine also drew in her good friend Claire King (aka Kim Tate of Emmerdale) to help with the raffle. Though the fashion wasn’t all glitter and glamour and included clothes and accessories for all ages from late teens upward. Jane, of Harriet’s, told Covered; “Linen is going to be popular this summer – no surprises there as it so often is. Pastel colours are going to be big too, and the fashion accessories of the moment are statement necklaces.”

The evening’s raffle was accompanied by entertaining banter between Emmerdale’s Claire King and her friend and the event organiser Lorraine Esteban.

Originally the Phyllis Harvey Horse and Donkey Trust and founded forty years ago, the sanctuary was restructured as Hope Pastures ten years ago when the present trustees averted closure. The sanctuary, also on the north Leeds Ring Road, presently houses and cares for thirty animals and has an ongoing responsibility for another eighty rehoused. Although the fashion evening raised in excess of

£1000 and counting, the running costs are around £8000 per month. Donations, support and volunteers are always welcome – hopepastures.org gives comprehensive details of the charity, its work and upcoming events. There is a Spring Fair on Sunday 18 May and a fun dog show on Sunday 22 June. They are also open every day from 103, admission free. Details online or 0113 2614344.

18 News From the Suburbs

Councillors Comments: Councillors Comments: Chapel Allerton alwoodley You may know this already but… Alwoodley is going to get a new medical centre, on King Lane. NHS England has approved the project and men with surveying equipment have been seen on the site in the past fortnight, on the area on the west side where buses used to turn round. Two existing local medical practices intend to move into new building and a developer is ready to start the planning processes. This is the single best item of news I can remember for our part of the city since I have been a councillor. It has taken years of nattering, persuasion, disappointment and resilience to reach this point and it is almost unreal to read sentences about ‘starting work on site early in 2015’. There will be inevitably be glitches and delays between now and the doctors moving in, but the decision is made and we are on our way. Everything else is second division stuff after that but do you know that Harewood Parish Council is organising a public consultation on June 28 at Wigton Moor church about the neighbourhood plan for our area? Or that we have written to the Grammar School twice about the problems apparently caused by Sixth Form parking? Or that the parade of vehicles that accompanies the riders of the Tour de France will take an hour to pass any given point on that Saturday morning? And after all these years we’re going to get a brand new, state-of- the-art, best-in-Leeds medical centre? I could sing. Cllr Peter Harrand TEL: 0113 268 9844 Email: peter.harrand@leeds.gov.uk

We are continuing to work closely with Chapel Allerton Good Neighbours and the Royal Voluntary Service to promote Chapel Allerton as a ‘Dementia Friendly Community.’ The first in a series of training sessions took place in April and was a great success. Two businesses have been formally designated as ‘Dementia Friendly Champions’ who will engage with the community to promote the scheme and encourage more people to take part. Other businesses have also been contacted scheme and more sessions will take place with other interested companies shortly. A public information meeting has also been arranged for the 5th June, 6pm at Inkwell, 31 Potternewton Lane, LS7 3LW. Please feel free to come along to find out more about the project. For further information please call Gemma at the Royal Voluntary service on 0113 8773597. Discussions are also underway to work with the Alzheimer’s Society and other charities supporting people with dementia to get as many people involved as possible. The Dementia Friendly Chapel Allerton scheme aims to enable the local community to make a big difference to the lives of people who have dementia in the area. Be that through shop assistants or restaurant staff being a little bit more patient when serving a customer who has the illness, or through the general public being more aware of how to interact with people who have the condition. Local Police and Leeds housing staff have also signed up to the scheme and it is hoped many statutory agencies and voluntary sector groups will also do the training.

NEWS FROM ALWOODLEY PARISH COUNCIL The World War One Commemorative Flowerbed has now been planted and after a few delays, the sundial has been installed in the centre. We are delighted with it and we hope others will be, too. The bed has been planted to provide a display of poppies, lavender and spring and autumn bulbs throughout the year. A bench will be installed within the next few months and, in spite of the traffic on King Lane, we hope it will provide a quiet spot for people to sit for a moment or two. The grass is now being prepared for the wild flower beds and they, too, will provide bright and colourful displays of flowers. We are delighted that Leeds City Council has rejected the Government Inspector's criticism of the Core Strategy and confirmed that they will continue to follow a brown field first approach to development which prioritises the use of previously developed land wherever possible and commits to protection of the Green Belt is the right one. We note that an appeal has been lodged with Planning Inspectorate against the decision to refuse the application for a takeaway on The Avenue. At the time of writing no date has been set for the hearing, but details can be found on the Planning website. We are hoping to install a third boundary stone at the corner of Harrogate Road and Nursery Lane, on the grass verge by the Royal Mail Sorting Office. Also, on Eccup Lane there was a very old stone which, from 1796, marked the boundary of what is now Alwoodley Parish. It is currently lying forlornly in a field after it fell down sometime after 1974, but if permission is granted by the Harewood Estate whose land it is on we would like to reinstate it to mark the northern boundary of the Parish. Green Woodwork for Beginners Carpenters are skilled craftsmen. The gift is in their hands and their natural ability is honed by training and apprenticeships. If you think that sounds a little grand then remember the first offerings you or your children brought home from craft classes at school. Or the last time you tried to build a shelf or re-hang a door. Or assemble a flat pack computer desk. Hollybush Conservation Centre in Kirkstall, Leeds, has devised the right one-day course for budding woodworkers who lack the necessary technical knowledge and precision and arsenal of electric tools. Their Green Woodwork Experience Days offer tuition in selecting freely available woodland timber, mainly unseasoned, and, using traditional tools and simple methods, turning it into useful rustic items such as stools, coffee tables, gates and trinkets such as spoons or napkin rings. And, in keeping with their ethos

The Thankful Village Badapple Theatre is touring with an innovative new production that finds humour within the tragedy of The Great War. The play is set in the fictitious village of Bottledale – designated a “thankful village” because it suffered no casualties in WWI. That designation is a genuine one and was coined in the 1930s. Recent extensive research has extended the classification to 53 such civil parishes in England and Wales – and none in Ireland or Scotland. After several years of her own research, including visits to battle sites and military cemeteries in Flanders, Badapple’s director and published playwright Kate Bramley created Bottledale as another. The original musical score is by Jezz Lowe. Covered visited the company’s final rehearsal at Kirk Hammerton Village Hall in April and spoke with Kate and actors Kaitlin Howard, Zoe Land and Emma Bright. The play explores the relationship between three men from Bottledale, enlisted in the army and posted to Flanders. Captain Arthur Proud had been landlord of The White Horse Inn. The two privates are Sydney (a blacksmith) and Tommy (a thresher). Then there are the wives at home – Mrs Proud (now the landlady) and Nellie and Edie (her employees). Clever parallels are drawn from their surreally parallel lives. The three actors are also in parallel. Each plays both the husband and wife. In costume but not make up for their

male characters, the audience is constantly reminded of the mirror imagery between Bottledale and the trenches. Badapple Theatre is a fully professional theatre company and registered charity. The Thankful Village has a very busy touring schedule, almost daily, at small venues throughout north Yorkshire and some beyond. Their website badappletheatre.com gives comprehensive details of all plays and performances. The Thankful Village closes in Hull on 22 June. Its only appearance in the Leeds area is at Thorner Victory Hall on Saturday 14 June. Bookings online or 07521 372994 (Thorner only).

The inhabitants of Bottledale received none – therefore a designated “Thankful Village”.

Samuel Ledgard Remembered in Miniature at The Motor House Garage Visitors to The Motor House, a Bosch Garage in Clayton Wood Close, West Park, are impressed by the cased 1/8 scale model of a London double decker bus. Enthusiasts might recognise it as a model of a Daimler chassis with a Park Royal body, fitted with an AEC 7.7 litre engine. But what of the name on the side, Samuel Ledgard? Samuel Ledgard was a Leeds entrepreneur born in 1874. His business interests began in 1897 when he became the licensee of The Nelson Hotel, Armley, and acquired the adjacent bulk bottling plant. Moving into outside event catering, he also became a haulage contractor and in 1912 combined his haulage business with a weekend passenger service. Although he also extended into vehicle servicing, quarrying and farming, it is perhaps his passenger services for which he is best remembered.

Spring planting in Shadwell The Shadwell Horticultural Society is a friendly gardening club for everyone, expert and novice alike. It was started in 1947 by a group of like-minded people, whose first Show was a buttonhole competition held in The Red Lion. The club has naturally evolved over the years and current membership is just over 200. There is a Committee of 15 and additional volunteers help run various events. There

Ledgard’s first scheduled passenger service was in 1924, from Horsforth to Leeds. By the time of his death, in 1952, his large fleet of buses was well established and had been working from depots including Armley, Bradford, Otley and Yeadon. The company survived in name until it was acquired by another in 1967. The model pictured was built by Don Bate of The Motor House, seated, in 2012 to commemorate

The Sylvia Wright Trust Sylvia Wright, a Leeds-based senior nurse and senior lecturer at Leeds Met, sold up and cashed in her pension in 1982 to meet her calling to help relieve suffering in India. She moved to Tiruvannamalai in the Tamil Nadu region, in the south east – where the majority of the population suffers poverty and deprivation beyond Western comprehension. She was at first supported by friends after her own money ran out. The breadth of support for the work she continued to do lead to the formation of the Leeds based Sylvia Wright Trust. The trust has no paid staff, with 97% of all funds raised going to India - currently

around £200,000 a year. That is a tiny amount by UK standards, but a visit to sylviawright.org gives a good idea of what it has done in Tamil Nadu. Sylvia Wright OBE (since 2008) visited Yorkshire in April. Her educational and fundraising engagements included a coffee morning at Sand Moor Golf

Club in Alwoodley on 4 April. Sylvia outlined the trust’s recent and planned work and, at the close, answered a number of searching questions from pupils from four local primary schools - Immaculate Heart, St Nicholas, St Paul’s and St Urban’s. The morning raised £850 for the trust. Contact via website or 0113 2673936.

Moving is easy with Linley & Simpson We have all seen the stories recently regarding how the property market has started to improve; one of our properties in Horsforth is a true testament to this! Mrs M placed her two bedroomed terraced house in Horsforth for sale, and we didn’t even need to wait one day before her house was SOLD (subject to contract). Sandra Wright, Valuation Manager at Linley & Simpson, Horsforth explained how the house had sold so quickly:“The first viewings were booked within 3 hours of measuring the property up; we hadn’t even put it on the market! Once measured up we contacted applicants and had 3 viewing booked immediately. The first viewing was within 3 hours and we had an offer after this viewing, and at the asking price!” Mrs M told us: “The service I have received from Linley & Simpson has been warm and professional. They have communicated well and kept me up to date with the process. I feel they have wanted the best for me as a client

and have worked hard in the background to make this sale happen for me.” An improving market is also visible through our other offices with over 30% of our current stock sold STC, coupled with a buoyant rental market it really does show how quick the market is moving at the moment. If you are thinking of selling or letting make sure you get in quick to avoid disappointment. Contact Linley & Simpson today to see how they can get you moving. Exploring Leeds More Owls to find Our walk this month looking at the various Owls to be found on buildings in the centre of Leeds concentrates on the area south of The Headrow. We commence the walk on Infirmary Street at the old Yorkshire Bank premises where stone owls can be seen on the buttresses and spires. Moving to the adjacent street of Quebec Street, there is an owl in the glass in Quebec’s Hotel, formerly the Leeds and County Liberal Club, which was built in 1890. Around the corner on King Street, on another hotel the Met Hotel (formerly the Hotel Metropole), which was built in the same decade in 1898, are a pair of owls on the Victorian terracotta facade. From here turn left onto Wellington Street. We now head off across City Square (no owls to be seen on the statues – only pigeons) to the corner of Bishopsgate Street where on the old Midland Bank premises – now Flares nightclub – owls can be seen above the doorway. Heading down Boar Lane, on your right a stone owl can be seen on The Bourse building. Over the road is the new Trinity shopping centre - the owl here is like a gem, brightly gold and silver. Turn left at the lights and head off up Briggate back towards The Headrow. Halfway up the street on the right is the Yorkshire Bank on Kirkgate where two owls

are carved in wood with YPB (Yorkshire Penny Bank) on the shield between them. Continue down Kirkgate and cross over the road to Kirkgate Market, 110 years old this year and designed by Leeming and Leeming. In here the pairs of owls can be found in circles on the green and gold ironwork. We now cross over from the market heading back slightly towards Boar Lane to one of the jewels of Leeds’s architecture. I mentioned in the last article about Cuthbert Broderick who designed many fine buildings in the city, and the Corn Exchange, built in the 1860’s, is possibly his greatest

Head back towards the market and down Kirkgate to reach the Leeds Minster (formerly Leeds Parish Church before its recent upgrade in status in 2012) where a couple of sets of owls can be found, both in plaques with a fleece in the middle. The one illustrated is that on the end of one of the sets of pews. The building itself is dedicated to Saint Peter. An early 7th-century church on this site was burned down in 633 AD. A church at “Ledes” is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The church was subsequently rebuilt twice, after a fire in the 14th century, and again in the 19th century. Walter Farquhar Hook, Vicar of Leeds from 1837 until preferment as Dean of Chichester in 1859, was responsible for the construction of the present building, and of the revitalising of the Anglican Church throughout Leeds as a whole. Face back up Kirkgate and turn left onto High Court and The Calls. On your right you will see Wharf Street and above the door of the

Leeds Civic Trust building on the right an owl can be spotted in the glass. Continue along The Calls into Call Lane and then turn left onto Bridge End where you will reach Leeds Bridge. The present cast iron road bridge dates from 1730 and is Grade II listed. A wool cloth market operated at Leeds Bridge, becoming the centre of wool trade for the West Riding of Yorkshire in the late 17th century. The bridge was rebuilt in 1870-73 by W. H. Barlow to a design by T. Dyne Steel. The iron was cast by John Butler of Stanningley. The cast iron balustrade is of rings and flowers. The east side bears the arms of the Corporation of Leeds where we will see our crowned owls and a fleece. Our final owl on this month’s tour can be found by going back from the bridge onto Call Lane and then heading up Swinegate

to the Malmaison Hotel, now in the building formerly occupied by Leeds City Tramways Department, which opened in 1915. The pair of owls can be seen in the plaque above the doorway. From here continue along Swinegate to return you back to City Square.

So ends our second visit round the centre of Leeds looking at the owls which appear on the arms of this fine city. For more information, education and inspiration, and to view a Leeds Owl Trail map visit: www.leedsowltrail.com

34 Blast from the Past

Back to the Future The recent loss of five British servicemen in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, and last November’s police helicopter crash in Glasgow, received extensive media coverage. Both were subjected to scrutiny at the highest level by uniformed and civilian investigators. Conversely, a similar incident that took the life of Charles Butler of West Park on 27 August 1917 was not. Butler was a Captain in the Royal Flying Corps (now RAF). Training a cadet at an English airfield, his airplane inexplicably fell from the sky. Both were killed. Such was the rate of casualties during WWI that the incident never made the national press – possibly not even the regional. The information can be found online buried among alarmingly brief military reports and in a 1917 issue of Flight magazine. Also reported on the same page of Flight was a corruption case being brought against three men. Lyman J Seeley, an American aviator, inventor and salesman had been charged with bribing Wing Commander John Cyril Porte of Royal Navy Air Service procurement into buying his company’s aircraft. William August Casson, a recently retired senior civil servant and practising barrister, was charged with laundering the

“commission” – as much as 25% of the value of sales. The alleged offences spanned three years and were the first cases to be brought under a 1908 Act of Parliament intended for that very purpose. At the time of trial, Seeley remained in USA and failed to appear. The Crown dropped the case against Porte in view of his previous service record and the fact that he was terminally ill – on the condition that he refunded the £38,000 he had pocketed in unlawful payments. Casson pleaded guilty to twelve of the twenty-six charges, was fined £6000 and his proceeds confiscated. Six thousand quid – in 1917! Using average earnings for comparison, that’s well over £1 million in today’s money. So, while 27 years old Captain Butler was risking his life on a daily basis in England and France,

flying primitive aircraft made of wood and cloth offering precious little protection from anything, a barrister was colluding with a salesman and senior Naval aviator to deprive the War Department, and war effort, of tens of thousands of pounds. Reporting was evidently suppressed at the time; the only comprehensive reports of the trial were carried in Flight and The Mount Ida Chronicle (NZ). Two column inches a month later in The Sydney Morning Herald exonerated Porte and incriminated only Casson. Risks taken by unsung heroes such as Charles Butler, then and now, pay for our security and freedom of speech. Continued corruption at high level in the public and private sectors and irresponsible behaviour by the media are shameful returns.

The Tetley

It’s hard to believe that the magnificent art deco Tetley headquarters, built in 1931, isn’t a listed building. Such a fundamental part of Leeds’ industrial and social history, Tetley’s Brewery was founded by Joshua Tetley in 1822 and grew to be the largest brewery in the North of England, before Carlsberg took over in 1998. The Leeds brewery site closed in 2011

and was largely demolished. We can be thankful then that Pippa Hale and Kerry Harker saw the beauty in this building and how it would fit with their vision for the future. The recent transformation is down to the directors and cofounders of Project Space Leeds, a charity established to showcase new and emerging artistic

talent, and previously located at Whitehall Waterfront. Kerry and Pippa are themselves both graduates of Leeds University and were drawn to the character and architecture of the Tetley building. Now a centre for contemporary arts and learning, the heritage of the building has been beautifully preserved, and demonstrates a careful blend of old and new. Entering through the original wood and glass revolving doors you arrive into the reception area where the original war memorials still stand, commemorating the loss of 261 Tetley employees, including Isaac Tetley, during both world wars. Oak panelling remains throughout and the boardroom is kept intact, complete with portraits of the Tetley elite still gracing the walls. The original art deco lift has been decommissioned but still provides an interesting feature, and the second floor atrium has been

opened up to provide a light, airy exhibition space over which the stunning period glass roof sits. The Bar and Kitchen centres around community, with profits going directly to support the artistic and educational programming held at the venue. Here you’ll find a range of good quality food and drink in a relaxed environment. The menu is wholesome and Yorkshireinspired, using locally sourced produce as much as possible and, of course, you’ll be able to enjoy a fine pint of Tetley’s whilst soaking up the atmosphere. The furniture in the bar is largely recycled from the old headquarters and you’ll find tables fashioned from old workstations and magnificent iron pillars. Children are welcome and have a special menu, which includes picnics. This is now very much a building

where all of the family can come and education is a key factor at The Tetley, with school groups welcomed and regular Springboard Saturday family events. Easter promises “fun for the young at heart of all ages” with a plethora of activities lined up including animated films, robot making and letterpress printing, not to mention the Easter egg hunt and opening of the outdoor dining terrace and new green space, which will encourage the continued regeneration of Leeds south bank. The renaissance of this building continues with the Tetley archive still being sifted through but, in the meantime, it’s good to see that the illuminated sign upon the roof still beams out across the city “The Home of Tetley’s Established 1822.” www.thetetley.org

NORTHCALL: A GREAT COMMUNITY RESOURCE As charities find it increasingly difficult to attract funding a charity in north Leeds has looked at finding other means of raising revenue to continue offering its many valuable services to the local community. Northcall is a community centre based on the Cranmer Bank estate amidst some of the most affluent areas of Leeds. Last year, it was lucky enough to secure funding to engage a part time Café Manager in the Community Café, which was spruced up in an effort to attract more customers. Bright colours and a revamped menu seem to have worked and now the Community Café is turning into a profitable enterprise. A Tea Time Club for families, Luncheon Club for older people and use of the facilities for cookery lessons for are just some of the activities hosted.

Janet Pike, Project Manager, told Covered: “We have been so fortunate in the past to receive funding to help us keep going but if we are to continue in today’s economic climate, we must start being more proactive and raise much more of our own funding. Leeds Directory provided funds for a pilot project around housekeeping to help older people stay in their own homes for longer. We have just become Green Tick Registered with the Council and have got all our

policies in place, now we’re ready to rock and roll, signing up new service users. We’re hoping that in the future part of our service will be to provide meals on wheels and offer gardening to the people we are housekeeping for” Northcall is open from 9 am to 2 pm serving, amongst other tasty morsels, what they claim as the best bacon sandwich in Leeds, and possibly the cheapest! REAP WHAT YOU SOW‌. Edible Bed is a project run by members of the REAP (Roundhay Environmental Action Project) Gardening Group which aims to encourage growing within an urban environment. The bed is managed by volunteers to demonstrate the variety of things which can be grown, often within a limited space, and aims to educate and promote good food health. All food grown here in the community bed is labelled when it's ready to eat and is free to be picked by the public. And it's not just your basic potatoes and carrots on offer. Expect to find seasonal artichokes, beetroot, beans and a variety of herbs and edible flowers. The group also organise Roundhay Open Gardens, offer advice to novice gardeners and give free seedlings to children to illustrate how small acts can have a big impact on the environment. If you'd like to get involved then drop by for a chat at Oakwood Farmers' Market (3rd Saturday of the month, www.oakwoodfarmersmarket.com)

COVERED BUSINESS PROFILE:

ELMHURST STILL GOING STRONG 45 YEARS ON

You must have installed a few windows in the last 45 years, do you know how many?

Nearing a milestone 45 years trading is some feat, particularly in a competitive environment like windows, doors and conservatories. Covered talk to Elmhurst’s Richard Abrahams about his impending anniversary and if they’ll be marking the year with sapphires.

When did the Elmhurst story begin? My Father Jack set the business up in 1970 at premises on Whitkirk roundabout. We’re still in the same spot to this day, though the showroom has undergone extensive refurbishment recently. I’ve been running the business, under the keen eye of Jack, for about 22 years now. My

Mother Norma still looks after the finances today – checking I’m not overspending! We’re all proud to have remained a true family company all these years.

Sounds like everyone has been in it for the long haul…. Definitely, Adele our office manager has been with us for nearly 30 years, installations

At the last count we have over 10,000 satisfied customers! It’s difficult to say how many windows we’ve fitted but our customers range from one-off windows, to full houses and conservatories – I’d say we’ve handled over 100,000 panes of glass at least! About 70% of customers have used us more than once, I’m assuming the other 30% will once it’s time to replace our last installation for them.

What changes have there been in the industry?

I think uPVC companies got a bad reputation at one point – there were plenty of cowboys on the scene, looking to cash in with quick sales and cheap units with no follow-

quite simply, a revelation and helps us to create beautiful, comfortable rooms, that add value to your home.

Ok, so I’m thinking of some home improvements – what should I look out for?

up customer service. Since 2002, genuine installation companies have to adhere to current Building Regulations under the FENSA registered scheme – it has made the industry more professional.

What about today’s products? Energy Efficiency is on trend! We fit A Rated Windows which are 60% more efficient than the ones we fitted 30 years ago. We replace a lot of windows that we installed all that time ago. We now fit solar controlled glass roofs to conservatories so 70% of "green house" heat is extracted. That ensures a conservatory can be used comfortably 12 months of the year. We’re currently investing in a ‘Green Deal Accreditation’ enabling us to become a green deal installer.

What other home improvement products have you launched? The past 10 years have seen a boom in many technologies and plastics are no different. We can now offer an extensive range of maintenance free products and be confident that the quality is now good enough for our customers. Bi-fold doors have proved really popular, they really open the

house up in summer. Composite doors are now replacing pvc ones, they look like wood but there’s no need to sand and paint every year! We also install roofline products, fascias, soffits and gutters that will last for years, again no need for a paintbrush and ladders!

What’s the best thing about running Elmhurst? Without doubts, it’s the satisfied customers who come back to us 30 years after their initial installation – it’s like being re-united with old friends. Customers are amazed that units have lasted twice as long as our famous 15 year guarantee.

There must be bad things? Although I’m doing my best to keep fit and trim, all the team like to get cakes and chocolate in the office so dieting is so hard! Otherwise, I’m living the dream!

What do you consider to be your best product? The Loggia conservatory: The Loggia system builds stunning extensions, replacing traditional conservatories and makes orangeries affordable. Combining the very best of British building excellence with a generous helping of Italian inspiration, Loggia is,

Ask anyone who quotes you for their current offers and discounts – everyone has a promotion on. Critical to any investment in your property, you should make sure the company you are dealing with has been established for some years - some say they have but watch out, they may have a chequered history! If a guarantee is offered, ask what it consists of for example our 15-year guarantee covers everything: labour and materials, including sealed units breaking down. Some will cover very little – be warned! Make sure you ask about planning permission on conservatories - you could get caught out – Elmhurst take care of things like that, for me that’s what service is all about – anything we can do to ensure your project runs smoothly and efficiently is just part of the package.

Sapphires are traditionally given on a 45th anniversary, are you expecting some jewels to come your way? Wouldn’t that be nice! Continued good reports from thousands of customers is reward enough for me. The family will certainly celebrate the milestone in some way – perhaps a little Bombay Sapphire Gin might be on the cards - here’s to another 45 years of business! If you’d like to know more about Elmhurst’s range of products and services and find out just why thousands of customers would recommend them, give Richard a call on: 0113 264 4505 or visit www.elmhurst-windows.co.uk

THERE’S MORE TO

LIFE THAN RUNNING

TRY SOMETHING

DIFFERENT! There's so many sports out there it is hard to choose a favourite. Football, rugby, cricket, golf. How about archery, bubble football, korfball and American football. They all sound great, but you can't get involved with those sports in the UK though can you? As luck would have it, you can and you don't even need to leave Yorkshire! Archery is getting more and more popular each year, especially with it being an Olympic sport but appeals to so many people because of their want to emulate the fabled Robin Hood. Trinity Sport now plays host to an archery club on a weekly basis and offers both beginners and experienced archers the chance to come along and get involved. Archery on your doorstep, who knew? Bubble football (also known as zorb football) is a relatively new concept that puts zorbing and football together to create a brand new, exciting activity. Players are engulfed from the waist up in an inf latable ball that allows them to play football with

a lot more contact without getting hurt. It's high action, high impact and definitely promises high levels of fun for all involved. The Lad Experience have teamed up with Leeds Goals Soccer Centre in Kirkstall to bring Bubble football to the local area with prices starting at ÂŁ20. Korfball sounds exotic and far from accessible but that is definitely not the case. In fact there is a korfball club in Leeds that is welcoming to players of all abilities. This fun and exciting sport combines basketball and netball and allows men and women to play on the same team on equal terms, a very

rare aspect in the world of sport, but one that proves very rewarding in the unique sport that is korfball. If you'd like to get involved then visit www. leedscitykorfballclub.co.uk. American football is getting really popular in the UK, you only need to look at how many

19

Brits watch the Super Bowl each year. However, did you know that Yorkshire plays host to a few American football teams that you can get involved with? American football is very similar to rugby and is just as exciting, hard hitting, action packed and fast paced if not more so. One of the 50+ UK based sides is the Yorkshire Rams who play at Middleton, South Leeds. Not only are the team on the lookout for players, but new fans and game day volunteers are also required and welcomed. There are a lot of unique sports out there just waiting for you to get involved, so go ahead, jump in and enjoy. Written by Daniel Roberts
