Selling to consumers - new rules: cancellation rights With effect from 13 June 2014 new regulations will change consumer rights. If you sell or provide services or digital products to consumers on line or by any other method you need to be aware of the new rules. In the case of “off premises contracts” a “distance contracts” the consumer must now be notified that for 14 days after the date of the contract there is a right to cancel the contract with that consumer. If that notice is not given in the contract, the right to cancel can last for up to one year after the date of the contract. If the contract does not make clear what the consumer must pay if the contract is cancelled (for example materials bought in anticipation of carrying out the contract or the cost of returning goods) then the trader will have to refund the whole of the price and bear any such costs himself. There are exceptions to the rules about cancellation rights, for example, they do not apply to land contracts and perishable goods. The regulations also have new requirements about giving information, about the sale of digital content and a number of other issues. Traders need to check that their method of dealing with consumers and terms of business will comply with the new rules. As a trader it is worth seeking the advice from a commercial solicitor to know how the rules may affect you and your business.

Editor’s Letter
Hello and welcome to this month’s Covered – the magazine for the Leeds suburbs. Be More Image Conscious! First-time contributors that is. We’re lucky to live and work in such strong communities and we have a growing number of contributors from groups, clubs and societies in the area. As readers’ yourselves you’ll realise that it’s usually the image that draws you into an article. So many times we’ve been unable to run a good story or report a community event because of the absence of a printable image. Or I’ve had to speak very nicely to one of photographers, often giving them little or no notice of the job in question. So, a few tips should help your event get the coverage it deserves. Images drawn from websites are often subject to copyright and are rarely good enough for print. To print glossy, the original image should be a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longer side and have a file size Disclaimer The opinions expressed in Covered do not necessarily reflect those of the editor, publisher or their agents. Whilst every reasonable care is taken to ensure the accuracy of information included within this publication, the publisher takes no responsibility for errors or omissions in Covered.

of 500kb or more. Merely increasing the file size of a poor image doesn’t improve it. If you are in any doubt then please send us the image ASAP, even before the piece is written. Unless the subject is distant and in darkness, or fast-moving, most big-name compact cameras under £200 should be good enough. Our own photographers are of course happy to oblige where possible, though their images are not freely available for release to other local publications. If they expect images then they are always free to attend events and take their own. The deadline for editorial submissions and listings in our Really Useful Guide is 08/07/14 and the advertising deadline is 11/07/14. Until next month,

The Tetley We visited landmark Leeds venue, The Tetley, a short while ago but were intrigued to learn more about the food on offer in the Bar & Kitchen and to see how the their new outdoor ‘green space’ had come into fruition. Just a short walk across the river from the city centre, it was well worth a repeat visit. In front of the majestic Art Deco building, which was once home to the Tetley’s Brewery empire, now lives a lush, green wildflower meadow. Surrounded by tasteful pathways and benches this is the perfect spot to enjoy a peaceful picnic, or to watch
AREA_E_ED40.indd 6
your children running amongst the flowers and it is fantastic to see an organisation giving such consideration to its surroundings and the community. Also outside The Tetley building itself is a new terrace area... perfect for an after work pint with friends, or even a spot of al fresco dining, should the Yorkshire weather hold up. It’s a real sun trap in
the right conditions and the lovingly maintained fuschias and garden herbs certainly seem to be thriving. Inside, the bar area is spacious and it’s a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and a good spot for intimate business meetings, with free wifi available, or for enjoying a leisurely drink with the papers. There appears to be no great urgency here; whilst the staff are attentive and always around, they seem content to be on hand when needed and not rushing people out so they can clear the tables. The service is cheery and prompt though and the hospitality team is lead by General Manager, Sam Gundelfinger, who has 15 years experience and came to The Tetley after previously working for Arc Inspirations. Through the bar area is a more slightly more formal dining room, with furniture and fittings largely recycled from the old brewery headquarters. The original oak wood panelling remains 16-Jun-14 11:55:28 PM

inspired. Good quality comfort food, locally sourced wherever possible. When The Tetley first opened its doors as a contemporary arts centre they consulted with renowned chef Anthony Flinn upon the menu. Many of the original dishes chosen by Anthony remain and are as popular as ever, but the current chef team of 7 are also
keen to lend new ideas, such as a fish mixed grill which was trialed over a weekend period, before making it onto the full menu. Firm favourites include fish and chips with mushy peas cooked in Tetley beer batter and individual toad in the hole with a pearl onion gravy which is cooked fresh from scratch and is worth every minute of the wait, I’m told. Burgers are thoughtfully presented on a wooden board, in a Tetley infused bun, and with dressings and garnish on the side so that you can leave out anything not to your taste. Sunday lunch is also highly popular and is served individually or on a sharing wooden platter, the idea being that you can share out your Sunday roast, as you would at home, but without the hassle of cooking it. Beef and pork are always provided for the roasts along with some of the biggest Yorkshire puddings ever seen and a hearty selection of vegetables to cater for all. For those with 16-Jun-14 11:55:33 PM

a smaller appetite, there’s a nice selection of salads, chunky sandwiches and a brunch menu as well as a ‘Daily Bake’ cake of the day. The vegetarian choice is good too with homity pie, a mixed platter and shepherdess pie. Salt Baked Beetroot, Whipped Goat’s Curd and Watercress salad proves to be a popular summer dish. The children’s menu is inspired and there is not one chicken nugget on offer. Instead there are fish finger sandwiches, made from the same fresh fish as the adult dishes, bangers and mash and a children’s picnic which includes hummus and courgette fritters. Children’s desserts are also smaller replicas of adult dishes, ranging from fruit crumble to sticky toffee pudding or fruit with a strawberry sorbet. There are a wider range of
dishes and desserts available on the full menu including the creative Tetley’s strawberries and cream. Not just your average strawberries and cream, this is beautifully presented with a range of meringues, jellies and sorbet. Afternoon tea is also available. There’s a good selection of warm drinks and the coffee is fairtrade. The bar, not surprisingly, offers Tetley cask and gold beers and why not? After all, it was first produced in this very building around 200 years ago. Tetley Huntsman is also available in bottles, along with a range of draught and bottled lagers, ciders and spirits. There is a good selection of wine and Running Duck, an organic fairtrade wine, is one of the wines available to buy by the glass, as well as by the bottle. Plans are in place to launch
9
a classic cocktail list later this year and will offer several 1930’s themed cocktails to honour the Art Deco heritage of the building. The really nice thing about the Bar & Kitchen here is that all the profits go directly back into the artistic and educational programming. This means that The Tetley can continue to inspire artists and school groups alike and to offer free events such as Springboard Saturdays, a free family event held every Saturday. The Tetley is just the sort of community minded venue which Leeds will benefit massively from and it’s new purpose as an assessable arts centre has allowed this building to continue to be a fundamental part of social history and it’s well worth the short walk over the river to investigate. www.thetetley.org

Buy local:
fish and seafood It is tempting to pick up meat and fish along with the groceries, household essentials and drinks at a weekly supermarket shop – whether in the car or on-line. But a bit of research in your local area might suggest some alternative time well spent. As an example, let’s visit a fish and seafood supplier in Ilkley. There may well be comparable provision near you! The Ramus Seafood Emporium started life in Harrogate 40 years ago. In 2007, a second branch opened in Ilkley. Not a rapid rate of expansion, you might think, but as MD Jonathan Batchelor told Covered: “We need the right location, premises and customers.” The Ilkley premises in South Hawksworth Street are impressive, with an extensive range of fresh and smoked seafood as well as dressed and home-cooked items. The home cooking is done in Harrogate and Ramus also supplies selected hotels and restaurants. Food miles are kept to a minimum – dressed Whitby crab is a feature – but the watchword is quality. Staff are on the phone to suppliers on a daily basis and the best catch arrives by the next day. Produce is responsibly sourced; Ramus only buys line-

Ramus is also responding to a demand for delicatessen products, again with competitively priced and local items. Ilkley is short of independent delis; three have vanished in the last couple of years. The next step is to stock a small range of wine specifically selected to accompany fish. So, if you live or are shopping in Ilkley, check out Ramus. We guarantee that you will be very pleasantly surprised.

Confrairie internationale de St Vincent St Vincent is the patron saint of wine makers and the Yorkshire/ Leeds confrairie (old French spelling for brotherhood) is one of three in UK. It was founded in 1981 as a direct consequence of Leeds and West Yorkshire’s school twinning arrangements with Lille, Leeds’ twin. Lille, in northern France, is well known for Flemish beers, hop spirit and its own local beer, Ch’ti (named after the local population and dialect), though not wine. But there was a vibrant confrairie in Lille to which many British teachers and lecturers had been invited. So it was only a matter of time before the Leeds community followed suit.
Tom Watson of Majestic Wines presented seven Spanish wines
Leeds confrairie has four tasting evenings each year, with additional tasting dinners in January and July. The quarterly tastings are held in Castle Grove Masonic Lodge, Headingley, and the dinners at Devonshire Arms and Ruddings Park. The number of members has shrunk, through time, to a little over 30. The core of original members has diminished and, with French no longer being the universally taught foreign language at schools, the exchanges just aren’t generating enough new ones. Which is precisely why the confrairie invited Covered to their spring tasting on 30 May – what better way to publicise their activities than in a magazine that delivers and places 100,000 copies across North Leeds every month? By now many garden birds will have fledged their first brood of chicks, and may be starting on a second. You could see fledglings at your feeders for the first time. They are often as big as the adults, but can look very different, a bit like “unfinished versions” of their parents. Young robins are speckled brown where the adult is red, and young goldfinches lack the striking red and black patterns on the head. The parents will be introducing them to your garden as a food source, and will feed them less and less. If you see a chick that seems to have been abandoned, please don’t try to rescue it unless it is injured or in immediate danger. The parents are most likely to be nearby AREA_E_ED40.indd 12

winds. This also applies to dahlias, delphiniums and other tall flowering plants, where staking early ensures the flower heads are enjoyed without damage. If you have the time and energy, soft wood cuttings of shrubs taken now will root in a reasonably short time. This is a month to enjoy yourself, as flowers are blooming everywhere and your carefully grown crops are starting to reach maturity. Start harvesting your vegetables, fruits and salads, as they reach their peak of perfection. Eating, pickling, jamming or freezing as your fancy takes you. This is also the last month to sow final quantities of brassicas, peas, beans and beetroot, ready for autumn and winter. If this month becomes dry, it is important to water all your growing crops to ensure they grow healthily – and do not bolt (run to seed) prematurely. Feed your tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers on a regular basis, picking out the side shoots on tomatoes to maximise the crop. Dead head roses and other perennials, to encourage repeat flowering. As the first flush of flowers go over, feed the plants with a general balanced fertilizer – then spray with a preventative fungicide to keep on top of rust, mildew and any other garden problems. If there is an infestation of green fly, black fly etc, spray with your own favourite remedy to control the situation.
Since this is the start of the holiday season, it is time to stand indoor plants outside in a sheltered spot – where they can enjoy being part of the natural surroundings. In order to prolong the scent of summer, start to cut lavender and a selection of herbs for drying or freezing for use during the winter. Finally, keep on top of your lawns and weeding without any excuses! The HAGA Trading Hut is open 7pm – 8pm every Friday. Featherbank Lane, Horsforth LS18 4NW www.haga.btck.co.uk

Cycling Out of Fashion Regular contributor Ivor Hughes thought he’d had a brilliant idea for a fashion feature based on what’s hot in today’s cycling scene – and how Le Tour’s presence in Yorkshire had affected local fashion. How wrong he was ... It didn’t take me long in Chevin Cycles in Otley to realise I was on to a loser. Speaking with one voice, the sales team of four assured me that there are no fashions whatsoever in the world of keen club road cyclists. Black Lycra shorts and their own club’s jersey and that’s it, maybe with
Cycling clothing can be colourful and stylish but fashions rarely vary – cycling club members are expected to wear the official jersey at events. Here are two East Bradford CC guests at Otley CC’s Christmas cycle ride and dinner with Olympic medallist Lizzie Armitstead.
differently coloured helmets. The reason is quite simple – club cyclists are expected to wear their club’s jersey and expect others to do the same. But what about yellow, red spotted, green or any of the others sported on Le Tour? And what about the team sponsors’ colours, logos and patterns? Again, four speaking as one; “The only people who should

wear those jerseys are the ones who have earned the right to do so. Those that haven’t are just posers – and there are other less charitable words used from time to time. Cyclists and their supporters aren’t like, say, football’s. Football fans will happily wear their team’s shirts, even named players’. The only acceptable exceptions in cycling are children.” That told me. A quick look round Chevin Cycles was confirmation enough. A vast array of cycles, accessories and clothing. Cycling may be just as glamorous and colourful as, say, athletics, golf or winter sports, but there isn’t the same fashion input. Yes, a few bright colours and club jerseys but none of the big team names, sponsors, characters or jerseys. No replicas. The closest reference to Le Tour was a yellow T-shirt commemorating the event’s passage through Otley.

To Pixie or Not to Pixie? That is the question! Sleek Bobs and chic Pixie Crops have been all over the fashion catwalks and red carpets this year! But don’t worry, you don’t need to be a celebrity, you just need the right advice! Here are a few points to consider when preparing to take on this gorgeous new style! Face Shape - Usually a chic pixie or a bob cut suits small oval faces - however find the right stylist and you are on to a winner! Colour - Make sure your colour is right! A L’Oreal Professionnel salon will ensure you get great colour! Colour is very important - and a salon colour is far superior to anything you can achieve at home out of a bottle - the colour used in salons is designed to care for your hair and isn’t going to fade after a week or 2! Texture - This is very important!
Beyonce, Emma Watson, Anne Hathaway and Renee Zellweger have all had a Pixie cut. Have you done yours?! If you sit in the mirror looking at your hair hanging down the side of your face, weak, limp and lifeless - then this pixie or bob cut is the perfect choice for you!!! The short cropped choppy style will create definition, texture, volume and really give your face some shape! Search the internet and magazines and cut out your pictures then book in to your local salon - and take the plunge! It is a brave style that brings back life to your hair! And don’t worry about taking your pictures hairdressers love you to take them pictures of
what you want. Get yourself some good wax product - such as L’Oreal Professionel Wild Styler Depolish or the Wild Styler Scruff me - the Wild Stylers are a great new range from L’Oreal and leave you with an amazing finish - or the ‘Tigi Bed Head’ is another great one. Also, invest in a blow dry cream - something you can rub in just before blow-drying your hair, whilst it is still wet and this will create tons of volume. What’s more it takes half the time to create this and will reduce your routine every day!

Tous en selle! (everybody in the saddle!)
In July ‘Le Tour de France’, cycling’s most famous competition, will be making its way to Yorkshire for the Grand Départ. For the first time since it was established in 1903 the Tour is heading to the North of England and it gives sport lovers in Yorkshire the chance to see this historic and prestigious event first hand in their home county. The vibrant city centre of Leeds will see the cyclists speeding through the Headrow before making their way around one of the most scenic routes in the UK. If you want to be present to give Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish some home crowd encouragement as they start their quest to try and get their hands on the fabled yellow jersey, then make sure you get to the Headrow in Leeds on the 5th July because as of 11.10am the 2014 Tour de France will be underway; from here the cyclists will then travel 190km to Harrogate during stage one of the Tour. Yorkshire does have a big link to the Tour de France besides hosting it this year – before
Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome won the last two Tours and put British cycling truly on the map, it was Yorkshire born Brian Robinson who was the first Brit to win a stage of the Tour de France way back in 1958 paving the way for the success of today. The beauty of the Tour being held in the beautiful Yorkshire hills is that they are here all year round and can be ridden by anyone, including you! Obviously fitness is key if you want to cycle the whole 190km so here are a few tips to get you started (buying a bike is a given…) : • Get involved with spin classes, they are a great way to build stamina and fitness levels whilst being motivated by an instructor. • Be prepared to gradually build up your cycling skills and fitness levels, it will come with time and cannot be rushed. • Make sure that your technique is correct when in the saddle – poor technique will affect your overall ride. • If your plan is to participate in a road race, make sure that you are
tackling plenty of road routes for practice – don’t expect to be able to go into an event just having taken a few spin classes – hill climbs cannot truly prepare you for the real thing. • Make sure you stay hydrated whenever you cycle (even on a stationary bike or in spin class) and if you’re on a road bike outdoors then make sure that you’ve got a helmet on. (Letour.yorkshire.com has plenty of cycling events that you can get involved with if you are struggling.) If you don’t fancy tackling the Tour route itself, Trinity Fitness is offering the chance to participate in a stationary Tour de France as part of their summer fitness challenges. The challenge starts as the Tour begins on the 5th July and must be completed by the 27th July as the Tour ends. The first person to complete the 190km, or the person that gets the furthest along the route, will win an official Yorkshire jersey. Written by Daniel Roberts (@DannyRoberts74)

FABIAN HAMILTON MP: Reaching out to those in need Whenever there is a period of financial crisis, you can be sure that some politician or party will pop up to argue to say that, ‘charity begins at home’ and therefore we should stop sending aid abroad. I sincerely hope that the UK as a nation never becomes that callous. Last March I travelled with members of the International Development Committee of House of Commons to the Middle East where I saw at first hand some of the terrible consequences of the civil war in Syria. Faced
Buying Yorkshire
with their cities being bombed by their own government and districts turned into battle zones with feuds between rival militias, ordinary people have had no alternative but to flee to other adjacent countries leaving all their possessions behind. We cannot begin to comprehend their misery. In northern Jordan we visited the Za’atari camp that has been recently established and which now shelters 100,000 inhabitants (the same number as the population of Cambridge). Jordan, a small impoverished country of just 6.3 Million has taken in no fewer that 600,000 refugees from Syria, so far, meaning its population has gone up by 10%. Imagine! That would be an influx of more than 6 million on an equivalent scale in the UK - a number equal to half the population of the greater London area. Jordan, one of the poorest countries in the world in terms of its water supply would be unable to cope without overseas aid and I for one am pleased and
We are a compassionate society and we should always help our neighbour. In today’s global community, we cannot turn and ignore the misery of others who are suffering through no fault of their own and I hope we will never do so. Fabian Hamilton MP 335 Roundhay Road LS8 4HT 0113 249 6600
He also observed a disengaged youth culture, an unaffordable housing market and, with an ageing population, a pensions time bomb.
Buy Yorkshire 2014 was a full house on 13 and 14 May. Two full houses, in fact, if you count both of the exhibition halls at Leeds Royal Armouries – the Armouries Hall itself and New Dock, opposite. Around 170 exhibitors indoors and another half dozen taking advantage of the fine weather in the courtyard between the two buildings.
But, for those who managed to fight through the tears of woe and despair, and make it to paragraphs four and five, there was still hope. That hope was to build on the trust shared and earned among conference attendees; we are moving into a relationship economy, where business communities come together and show mutual support, prospering in tandem.
In the event programme’s foreword, founder Geoff Shepherd used three of five paragraphs reporting the breakdown of trust in politics, banking and big business.
It will of course be months, maybe years, before this Buy Yorkshire Conference can be assessed as a catalyst for Mr Shepherd’s clear optimism. Still, with 180

proud that the UK is helping out. The country offering most help is the USA and we come next in terms of the support that is provided by the worldwide community. It is tragic that in the 21st century the struggle for political power and wealth in parts of the world still translates into human misery on a frightening scale. But without aid what would happen? Millions would die and the scale of asylum seeking worldwide would explode with hundreds of thousands of people travelling the world, crossing frontiers and seeking asylum. What other alternative would they have?
Few exhibitors were from the manufacturing sector. Ginetta’s outdoor display received a lot of attention and was complemented by their indoor display of own brand inspired leisure wear. Racing driver Max Coates is behind the wheel.
well-appointed and informationpacked stands, and twenty-five guest speakers from the peaks of numerous industries and professions, the conference gave exhibitors and delegates a pretty good chance. 16-Jun-14 11:55:51 PM

NEWS FROM LPS During the past months the Leeds Photographic Society has had success with two wonderful exhibitions. Their annual exhibition at Salts Mill attracted over 800 visitors and the 'Beauty in the Natural World' exhibition at the Atrium Gallery in the Bexley Wing of Saint James' hospital was heralded a great success and will continue to run until the end of July. This exhibition is open to the public and features 16 stunning framed prints, all of which are for sale with all proceeds going to the Yorkshire Cancer Centre charity. Meanwhile the society's summer events have continued with tutorial evenings and an opportunity for members to practice their street photography with an outing to the Appleby Horse Fair. Events for July include the ever popular knockout competition and AREA_E_ED40.indd 28

Vintage, Vintage, Vintage Covered makes no apologies for featuring vintage fashion yet again – though this time the subject is broadened by the inclusion of music, dance, and vintage and classic home wares and vehicles. Once upon a time there were retro stands at antiques fairs, societies re-enacting whichever battles or periods, themed dance evenings such as swing, vintage fashion fairs and classic car shows. Those stand-alone events have now joined forces with devastating effect. There being none in Leeds, at least as far as we are aware, enthusiasts and the simply curious are going to have to venture further afield – Haworth Forties Weekend and Whitby Goth Festival are two of the best known. In June, Covered was invited to the second annual event at Scampston Hall, near Malton. The two-day event, Scampston Does Vintage, was an imaginative product of the two organisers’ passion for all things vintage. Rather than confine the event to any element or period, it is a wish list of everything they wanted to see, hear and taste at retro and vintage events. And at a venue that lent itself to the theme, rather than in some sports hall taken over for the afternoon - between the play group and the badminton club.
Take a look for yourself. Scores of multi-award winning classic vehicles as clean under the bonnet as they were outside. Dozens of vintage fashion and home ware dealers, including a specialist in menswear (very uncommon).
Jazz and swing bands performing throughout the event, including the Saturday night - and at two on-site venues. Visitors living the dream at a venue that complements and doesn’t conflict. By the way, the three visitors seated are on the display of a vintage prop hire company. The event had all angles covered. Such a charming and civilised event, and so were all the exhibitors and visitors with whom we spoke. June to September is the season for these events. Admission was £8.50 on the Sunday. Scampston has set the standard for others to follow.
Editor’s note
in this issue’s letter I’ve emphasised the need for reports sent in to be supported by good images. While I’m not necessarily plugging ours here as being the best possible, they do illustrate the point I’m trying to make. We couldn’t have given the event or subject as much as a mention without at least one good image. Don’t deny your club, cause or event the publicity and recognition it deserves by relying on microscopic web images or one taken on a dusty mobile phone.

30 Blast from the Past
Beryl Burton One name which was not being mentioned a great deal in the Yorkshire media, for a while, is Beryl Burton – arguably Britain’s greatest cyclist ever. Perhaps the world’s. But things are changing, due to Yorkshire’s present feverish interest in all things cycling and a play at West Yorkshire Playhouse. Born Beryl Charnock in Halton in 1937, she was hospitalised with rheumatic fever as a child. Her husband introduced her to cycling. They married in 1955. Within two years

she had won a silver medal at a national event and within five she had won three world titles. Domestically she was unbeatable for over twenty years. Her most remarkable achievement was in 1967 when she set a new record of 277.25 miles in 12 hours. The remarkable element isn’t in the record itself (though it still stands). No, it’s the fact that it took a British man until 1969 to beat it. Perhaps it is a sign of the times that, whereas two of our male cyclists have been knighted relatively recently and quickly, Burton was awarded only
an MBE, later elevated to OBE. There are tributes to her in Morley and there is a short cycling track between Harrogate and Knaresborough that bears her name. On 27 November 2012 a radio play about Burton written by actress Maxine Peake was broadcast on BBC Radio 4. This year’s Tour de France wasn’t the inspiration for the play, but is responsible for Beryl running at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 30 June to 19 July. There have also been recent supportive events in Morley, Ilkley and Knaresborough.

Belgrave Music Hall Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen is an independent venue offering music, art, film and food over three floors. This unique and vibrant addition to Leeds' Northern Quarter is easily noticeable on Cross Belgrave Street with it's bright, neon lights. The building first opened in 1934 as Leeds Children's Palace, a nursery built to provide childcare for the working families of the area. Throughout the years it has had many incarnations... Ike's Bistro in the early 90's through to Riley's Snooker Hall recently. Nowadays, this red brick building is home to the brainchild of Simon Stevens and Ash Kollakowski, who opened it as Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen in October 2013. The two also organise the increasingly popular Beacons Festival, which is held annually in Skipton. And that's the kind of vibe you get at Belgrave.... it's like a music and arts festival, all cleverly packaged up into one rather quirky indoor space.
The ground floor is the main bar and canteen, with wooden tables and benches alongside comfortable sofas. The furniture is reclaimed and fits in with the simplistic, retro vibe of the place. Exposed brickwork and chipboard sit by enormous windows flooding in natural light. The bar offers a good range of local ales and the 'canteen style' food is on offer from 12pm until late, seven days a week. There are several resident food companies operating at Belgrave. Dough Boys are the inhouse pizza outlet, baking freshly and selling them by the slice or whole. The menu changes daily but there will always be six with gluten free and vegan options available. Patty Smith's burgers
are served in a brioche bun with a range of exciting toppings and Fu Schnicken's offer Guo Bao Taiwanese steamed buns. There's also Layne's Espresso serving delicious cakes, Sunday brunch and expertly crafted coffee. The monthly 'Street Feast' is popular and has select vendors offering a range of exotic and

affordable food to sample. When we visited there was Mexican, Caribbean, Vietnamese and ice-creams, amongst others, and it was fantastic to see so many families there. Upstairs was largely dedicated to the Art Market with stalls selling original work alongside vinyl in what would usually be the live event room. This 200 capacity venue was part of the recent 'Live at Leeds' and regularly

plays host to enviable names such as James Taylor Quartet, Minneapolis synthpop band Polica and Brooklyn songwriter Joan As Policewoman, as well as promoting new talent and regularly hosting comedy and film events. Sitting on top is the roof terrace. Leeds desperately needs more outdoor spaces and this one fits the bill in any weather. Complete
with garden sheds, bunting and deck chairs it follows the festival theme and is a great, chilled out space to take in the skyline. Belgrave Music Hall is quite hip and studenty, but it has so much to offer to a whole range of people, whether it's enjoying a coffee with your paper or taking in some of the most vibrant music Leeds has to offer. www.belgravemusichall.com

Covered Website Covered’s website has just undergone a long overdue overhaul. With the magazine’s continued expansion and improvement, the old website had become relic of times gone by. After discussing plans for a revamped site with a number of digital gurus, editor Chris Barnham settled on the extensive talents of Modern Circus. Modern Circus is the professional identity of local digital media producer Jim McGuire. Now digital media can mean a lot of things, so let’s be specific; Jim specialises in video production, website management and online marketing. He achieves this all as a sole trader by working closely with a passionate, localised network of close-knit ‘creative types’; in his own words “the kind of people to which I’d gladly entrust the protection (but not consumption!) of my girlfriend’s homemade carrot cake”. In the space of 4 years, Jim has lent his talents to a multitude of local, national and international organisations, working with notable names such as bestselling author Philip Pullman CBE, evolutionary biologist Prof. Richard Dawkins and BBC radio presenter & comedian Robin Ince. This year, Jim consolidated his various digital media efforts to launch the Modern Circus brand, with the aim of making AREA_E_ED40.indd 34

Five fantastic blues acts will be performing at Chapel Allerton’s Seven Arts and Inkwell venues. Allerton Grange Fields – activity on all fronts! Covered readers will remember we reported late last year on the planting of fruit trees in the Community Orchard at the six-acre site off Talbot Avenue. Friends of Allerton Grange Fields have been busy in spring with two edible beds, as part of the Feed Leeds project. Volunteers have worked with the Roundhay Environmental Action Project’s Gardening Group to plant strawberries and rhubarb, vegetables (peas, beans and salads) and herbs (chives, rosemary, thyme and oregano). The aim is to encourage healthy eating and invite local people to pick fresh produce, while supporting a diverse array of wildlife at the site. The edible beds are a key project for the Friends in its emerging ten-year Greenspace Management Plan for Allerton Grange Fields, being developed with Leeds City Council Parks & Countryside.
Fields. FOAGF is a registered in Bloom group and this project is in response to the Welcome to Yorkshire and RHS campaign called Turning Yo r k s h i r e Yellow to honour the Grand Départ. It also serves to raise the profile of the traffic-free cycle track at AG Fields. And still on a local note, the flowers were grown at Red Hall Nursery.
Andy Goldring, Chair of Feed Leeds Committee said " It's fantastic that groups like this - and indeed our own Leeds City Council Parks and Countryside - are now starting to grow food in green spaces around the city. It helps to build community relationships, it helps to change food miles into food yards, and it sends a powerful message about access to fresh, local, tasty food in Leeds."

In the background is the grey industrial-looking perimeter fence, soon to be a smart black to match the new entrance signs at AG Fields. A Community Fence Painting Day is scheduled for Tuesday, 24 June with support from 20 corporate Asda volunteers. This is the first project to be delivered from the newly launched Voluntary Action Leeds (VAL) Employee Supported Volunteer Scheme. Asda is the first major firm to sign up to this scheme and Friends of Allerton Grange Fields will be the first organisation to benefit.

Travelling Through Leeds
the interests of travelling and Gypsy communities) has helpfully got back to us. While accepting that some of the settlements had been unwelcome, she outlined the city’s legal responsibilities towards communities with a nomadic lifestyle. She was hopeful, even confident, that new measures (including a negotiated stopping policy) would help ease past anxieties and disruptions – among the travelling community as well as local residents.
Last year’s game of cat and mouse between LCC and the travelling community – this settlement on the ring road, in Chapel Allerton, had been preceded by evictions from West Park and Adel. Leeds GATE praises LCC’s new policies as being a beacon to the rest of the country – but will they work for both communities?
Last September Covered reported unwelcome temporary traveller communities along the ring road – at the time in West Park, Adel and Chapel Allerton. Among other observations, we criticised Leeds CC for the apparent lack of a clearly stated and workable policy that could manage such events - then and in the future. Since then Helen Jones of Leeds GATE (representing AREA_E_ED40.indd 38
While GATE’s response was remarkably comprehensive, informative, helpful and positive, Cllr Barry Anderson remained unconvinced when we spoke with him. Last year he had been the intermediary between anxious constituents in Adel and the authorities responsible for evicting two traveller communities on Bedquilts playing fields. Not easy at the time – LCC hadn’t been keeping him fully in the picture while he was on a short break following his beloved Hibernian Football Club. At the time of going to press, traveller communities had recently appeared in Otley (on the road out to Ilkley) and in West Park (near McDonalds). Too early on the season, and without sufficient volumes, to indicate whether LCC has got the balance right between the needs and rights of both resident and itinerant communities. We shall see. 16-Jun-14 11:56:13 PM

Fairport Convention in Ilkley Most of the big names in folk music have played with Fairport Convention at one time or another in the band’s 47-year history; Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Mattacks, the late Sandy Denny – to name but a few. The current line-up is led by founder member Simon Nicol on guitar with Dave Pegg (34 years in the band) on bass, Ric Sanders on fiddle, Gerry Conway as a one-man rhythm section and Chris Leslie on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and whistle. They played in Kings Hall, Ilkley – for the first time – on 21 May to an enthusiastic reception. Two hourlong sets saw them ranging over a wide repertoire, from traditional folk staples like Matty Groves (from the iconic album Liege and Lief) to up-to-date numbers like Myths and Heroes. The latter is typical of Fairport’s approach to music, as entertainment and as a vehicle for bringing serious issues to mind. One such was Genesis Hall, a Richard Thompson composition from 1968 inspired by the housing crisis and evictions of tenants in London. Sadly, not much has changed on that front. AREA_E_ED40.indd 39
Simon Nicol in great voice at Kings Hall (Images: ivorhughes.com)
Fairport is credited with being the original “folk rock” band and is remarkable for the way it has evolved over the decades. Simon Nicol looks every inch the lead singer and guitarist, but it was a long time before he felt confident in the role, as he confesses on the band’s website. Dave Pegg never intended to play bass, now it is hard to imagine anyone else there. That they are all multi-talented was clear from this performance. Ric Sanders is a virtuoso violinist, amply demonstrated in the instrumental numbers. Chris Leslie, allegedly, can Morris dance while fiddling and singing – not hard to believe given the ease with which he picked up a succession of instruments. He is also a gifted songwriter and vocalist. Part of the pleasure of an evening like this is the chat between numbers
and Fairport judged it brilliantly. Mostly Nicol, but Pegg and Leslie made useful contributions and there was plenty of interaction with the audience, who clearly knew their back story. Fairport’s current tour lasts until 7 June, after which they will be getting ready for their August festival at Cropredy in Oxfordshire. Fairport’s Cropredy Convention is a great festival, smaller and more intimate than monsters like Glastonbury, and usually a lot less muddy. Running 7-9 August, it features Fairport in acoustic and electric mode as well as the likes of the Waterboys and Capercaillie. HEATHER PEACE: The Thin Line Regular Covered contributor Dawn Kilner is more used to visiting the city’s best restaurants and venues, this month she caught up with Heather Peace in HMV to find out about her new album, The Thin Line. Bradford born actress and singer songwriter, Heather Peace, made a welcome return home to Yorkshire when she performed a short acoustic set in HMV Leeds before greeting fans and signing copies of her new album 'The Thin Line.' She may have headlined with such acts as KT Tunstall, Alison Moyet and Brian May but, after starring in many mainstream TV programmes, Heather is perhaps better known as an actress. She has always had a passion for music though and often performed alongside her acting roles. Having learnt to play the piano at age 6, she went on to sing at her local church before leaving Yorkshire to study drama at Manchester Metropolitan University. After landing a role in Emmerdale in 1996, as Anne Cullen, her television career began and she appeared in show's such as London's Burning, Ultimate Force, The Chase, Lip Service and, most recently, ITV's Prey. This year though, Heather decided to leave her role in Waterloo Road to focus more on her music. She released her debut album 'Fairytales' back in 2012 under her own AREA_E_ED40.indd 40
record label, Kaleidoscope, after been signed to Simon Cowell's label in the past. This move for independence was, undoubtedly, assisted by Heather's strong and loyal fan base, who have travelled from as far as Australia and the USA to see her play numerous sell out tours. 'The Thin Line' was 3 months in the making and was produced by James Lewis, who has also produced the Arctic Monkeys. Heather describes being much
more involved in the production process for this album and they recorded onto tape to create a warm, soulful sound reminiscent of Motown and not dissimilar to a modern-day Dusty Springfield. Heather says that she had a clearer idea of the vibe she wanted for this record and was keen to inject more energy. "This is definitely more of a pop album" she says, and describes the first single from the album, 'We Can Change', as "an empowering tribute to equality." Heather's rich and strong vocals shine through this blend of tender ballads and up-tempo pop songs and covering the delicate subjects of love and break ups, with often emotional lyrics, can only help Heather's music reach out to yet more people and increase that fan base even more. Heather returns to Leeds City Varieties, with full band, on 27 October as part of a UK tour and will be playing at festivals throughout the summer. 'The Thin Line' is available from HMV stores, iTunes or Heather's website. www.heatherpeace.com 16-Jun-14 11:56:17 PM

2014 KIRKSTALL FESTIVAL The 2014 Kirkstall Festival will be on Saturday 12th July, 11:00 – 17:00, and the theme for 2014 is ‘Le Grand Festival De Kirkstall’, taking inspiration from the Tour De France. There will be some cycling themed events but also some French themed ones; including a newly constructed Pètanque court! Kirkstall Festival is a community fun day that takes place every year on the second Saturday in July in the beautiful grounds of Kirkstall Abbey, providing a full day of free entertainment that appeals to the whole family and community. The event is organised entirely by local volunteers with the kind
support of local councillors, Leeds City Council, grant providers and sponsors. This year’s entertainment includes; 8 performance areas for live music, dance and comedy, plus a Youth Stage. There will be over 100 stalls (with many local charities and groups represented), a wide

Rhinos’ New Partnership with NHS There are three clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) in Leeds, each covering a different area. Each also takes a citywide lead in different aspects of care. Leeds North CCG leads on emergency health care and on 6 June launched a new partnership with Leeds Rhinos and Leeds Rugby Foundation. The launch was at LGI’s Accident and Emergency Unit with ambulance drivers, A&E staff, GPs, the NHS CCG, LRF and Leeds Rhinos all represented.
As the Festival is largely selffunded attendees are asked for their support by buying a programme for £2 on the day. This will give details about everything that’s on across the day, and it’s a small amount for a fabulous family day out. Wherever possible attendees are encouraged to take public transport though there is limited free parking available, as well as disabled parking close to the site.

Urgent care is when you feel ill or have been injured and where the condition is not life threatening but still needs to be seen quite quickly. Emergency care is when you have a serious life-threatening illness or injury that needs to be treated immediately. Anybody who lives in Leeds or the surrounding areas that has used urgent or emergency care health services in the past twelve months can take part in the anonymous survey, available on the CCG website leedsnorthccg.nhs.uk. The building of your dreams! Scratch cards are everywhere, with their brightly coloured facades, they promise us wealth beyond our wildest dreams. If you have a heart to listen you will understand why . Someone, somewhere is interested in making money and it is not your concern who, but to then direct your thoughts to the promise of wealth you will then rely on, until the thing is defaced and cast into the bin where it belongs, only to cause yet more destruction to the environment it was supposed to have helped in the first place. It’s a really sad way to start this appeal isn’t it but true for so many of us ...false hopes after genuine trust in an authority that’s supposed to take care of us.
AREA_E_ED40.indd 42
So Safe Haven has reached its fourth birthday , yet it is so much older than you think. It’s existence is beyond reality and has its source in Wisdom and understanding. If you thought you were going to hear from us that we have reached a level where we are content then think again! We have only just touched the surface of the problem. Our eyes have been opened to the reality of the state of lives that have been blown apart by bureaucracy and harshness. Lives so torn apart they have no earthly way of being put back together again by earthly measures alone. Do you know someone in need, I do, and that person cannot be ‘fixed’ she is torn in every way and she stands alone now waiting for my solution, but I don’t have one. I can
only stand by and watch, yes I can make promises and give gifts but the real pain is still in attendance throughout and will remain so until something significant changes. Safe Haven is on a brink, does it settle and remain as it is or does it do the spectacular and resist the temptation to stay where it is. No it has to change, it has to grow up into something so big it stands with you all and says...’here my friends is the difference... the living proof there is a God after all’ What Safe Haven is about to achieve is phenomenal, it is turning its authority entirely over to God Himself and relying totally upon His authority and wherewithal to do an even greater job in helping society regain all it

has lost, the buck stops here and only God can achieve this for us. We have settled for less and now it is time to go for the Lot of His provision. The taskmaster will be definite in His choices, He will choose men of stature in society to help him and these people will be unrecognisable to the human eye. Men, and women, who will stand at His side and declare..’I’m for Good over evil...where do you stand?’ Some of you already feel you are helping and for that we are grateful , but God will ask for so much more, He will require your total commitment to this , so are you ready to take on a newer more fulfilling role than ever before in your life. We are no beggars and we don’t want your hard

earned savings, what we do expect is your willingness to do something and help us launch Safe Haven into a new era. You will know the type of help you can give because God will show you where you stand in all this. You can bring along your expertise as some have, you can make us all a cup of tea one day if you wish but most of all you can help us support the less fortunate by doing more than buying a scratch card and being left disappointed by its utter letdown clause. The Opportunity is out there free and clear as they say. Do you want to spend your life wondering did the pound I spent go to the people who needed it or did I do something for
someone else and change a life that was lost. Get involved help us build Safe Haven into a fortress of help where no one goes hungry or is left to squander their life into nothing, with despair and hopelessness. We can make a difference but that is only a shadow of what God can do with our willingness if we will give freely to His. Consider a total abandonment of our own volition to His... what a world this could be. A place where children are free to play again and grow and grow into whom they should have been all along! INSPIRATION FROM SAFE HAVEN A player is no longer required by a top league team so he is put onto the transfer list and sent packing to another team who eagerly await his involvement in new plans for their team. With success in mind the teams forge ahead with their team plan and no one is aware of what really took place behind the scenes. Some may say it was a bribe or another transaction that took place but was it entirely as seen by the average fan? No, in many ways all they are interested in is; will their team win? When a body is no longer needed it disappears into the abyss, it is only reconciled when it reaches the point of true arrival at its new destination. That destination has its roots in someone else’s decision to do good or leave it well alone. A do-gooder comes along very rarely, as in the well-known story of the Good Samaritan, but his actions were lifesaving. When a person is in need they are desperate, they want to know you care enough to step off the ladder of success and jump into their world for a time, time enough to realise their position AND understand it very well. Intervention is the answer, it comes when we

care, and it comes in barrels full of surprises and Candy Cane appetizers. If the person you help says “thanks” that is all you needed to make your day complete and say to yourself I did care after all. Come to the place where dreams come true, it’s exciting to know it exists, even more so because God leads us there all day long and completes the picture Himself for you. Poachers Bold – the latest album from Duncan McFarlane Duncan McFarlane has a loyal following in the Wharfe Valley and at folk festivals up and down the country. Fans have waited a couple of years for this latest album thanks to some health problems, now mercifully behind him. Duncan and his acoustic trio (Anne Brivonese on fiddle and Steve Fairholme on melodeon) were in fine voice at Otley RUFC in early May, playing a number of these tracks. The lineup on the album is electric, with Geoff Taylor on electric guitar, Martin Ward on bass guitar and
Nick Pepper on drums, but the added resonance merely enhances the appeal of a deeply thoughtful compilation. Some tunes are traditional, though often with the Duncan touch, like Rufford Park. This sinister tale of poachers gives the album its title and makes starkly
clear the gulf between haves and have-nots. Poachers Bold is not a protest album, though it does expose issues such as bullying and question the morality and the aftereffects of sending ever more troops into battle. There are more personal themes too; one song inspired by his memories of his grandparents and one by the funeral of Jane Tomlinson, who touched the lives of so many. A lovely instrumental piece recalls a special time with his daughter. All rounded off with a rollicking drinking song celebrating good cheer and friendship. The website duncanmcfarlane. co.uk gives the back story, all the dates and all the songs – with plenty of commentary.

The Shock of the Fall – book review The Shock of the Fall was the Costa book of the year 2013 and you can see why. It is a totally authentic first-person account of how it feels to be someone with a personality disorder, struggling to come to terms with a traumatic event and the inevitable guilt surrounding it. Written by Nathan Filer, a psychiatric nurse, it could so easily have been a pale shadow of Mark Haddon’s Curious Incident of the Dog in the Afternoon. But no – it has its own identity and packs a AREA_E_ED40.indd 46
huge punch. Aided by images and typography, it takes you inside the mind of Matthew Homes with his clear perception of his own condition and the inadequacy of almost everyone attempting to deal with it. Except his mum. Her total love and acceptance of her son (and whatever he did or did not do) shine through like a beacon and are infinitely moving. As is the ending – inevitably imperfect but nonetheless satisfying and ultimately optimistic. Buy it, read it, share it – you will never look at mental illness in the same way again. The Shock of the Fall is published by Harper-Collins at £7.99 in paperback and is available on Kindle at £2.99 16-Jun-14 11:56:21 PM

Leeds cat Rescue Can you offer a safe loving home to a rescue Cat or Kitten? Leeds Cat Rescue is an organisation that relies on cat loving volunteers to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome unwanted and abandoned felines. All cats and kittens re-homed by Leeds Cat Rescue are fully vaccinated, neutered, treated for fleas and worms, and micro-chipped. Mimi is a current resident. She is a lovely girl, but unfortunately has struggled to find loving adopters. She was a very poorly kitten when she came into the organisation’s care but she has come a long way and now deserves a forever home where she can thrive with a family that understand her needs.

Fell Running Fell running differs significantly from cross country running. The gradients are steeper and the climbs more frequent. Whereas crosscountry and road races are defined by distance, a fell race is also classified by the amount of ascent, eg 10 miles/2000 ft. A quick scroll through the events listings of the Fell Runners’ Association (FRA) shows that the majority are won in under an hour. All runners are fit, dedicated and healthy. The fact that some take twice the winning time shows the difference the climbs make between runners of otherwise similar ability. The earliest fell race was reputedly an eleventh century test for potential messengers by the King of Scotland. More realistically, today’s competitions originated at agricultural and rural shows in Victorian Britain alongside other tests of throwing and pure strength. The FRA’s main reasons for being in existence are to make the events as safe as possible AREA_E_ED40.indd 47
