Editor’s Letter
Hello and welcome to this month’s Covered. We’ve another vibrant, packed edition for you this month – it’s been a pleasure to put this one together! Our Food & Drink section takes a look at Mrs Gales – a newcomer to the Street Lane scene. I’m a sucker for a business with a heart and Mrs Gales is certainly one of those – pop by for afternoon tea if you can, not only can you sample tasty cakey delicacies in a unique environment, you’ll also help a good cause. Our new ‘Leeds Venues’ feature takes a look at Seven Arts in Chapel Allerton – look out for the picture of the baby in ear defenders – that one has bought a smile to everyone’s face! If you’re a fashionista then check out this month’s FHAB for some inspiration. And remember, dress to impress at all times – our snapper may be just round the corner from you! Do let me know what you’d like to see more of in our FHAB section, I’m more of a flat cap and walking boots
kind of guy so I rely on inspiration from others for that particular feature. On that note, please do let me know what you’d like to see more (or less) of in Covered. We publish this magazine for the benefit of all our readers in the Leeds suburbs and we rely on your feedback to ensure that we’re being representative. If you want to see something in the next edition, just let me know – I’m always eager to please! The deadline for editorial submission for the next edition is 19/03/14 and the deadline to advertise and showcase your business in the city’s most widely distributed publication is 21/03/14. Until next month,
Chris Barnham Editor

Mrs Gales Imagine a traditional, English tea-room, the type you’d often find hidden deep in The Cotswolds… well, now you don’t have to go that far… Mrs Gales offers you just that, right here, on Street Lane in Leeds.
Complete with mismatched china, tea cosies and lace doilies, Mrs Gales brings a touch of elegant nostalgia to this bustling area and offers a welcome retreat from busy everyday life. Opened in late December 2013 by friends Francesca Davis and Lucia Scaife, this is something more than just your average café; Mrs Gales is billed as a tea-room, meeting place and emporium and sells quality, vintage memorabilia and clothing in addition to tempting customers with an array of fine teas, cakes and light meals. It all began when the friends met at a local fair, through a
love of vintage clothing. They joined forces with Marilyn Gale, another friend of Fran’s, who was keen to start a business which could support and provide resources towards the fight against melanoma cancer, an illness from which Marilyn suffered, and the idea of the tea-room was born. Very sadly, Marilyn passed away before seeing her dream become a reality, though her husband David carried on his wife's wishes and became landlord, renovating the premises so that Fran and Lucia could continue with the plan. Very fittingly, they decided upon the name Mrs Gales as a tribute to their late friend and money

from the venture goes directly to ‘M’ for Melanoma, a charity set up to work with the oncology department at nearby St James’ Hospital. Walking through the door now, you are greeted by the most fantastic chandelier and a mannequin wearing Victorian silk finery, much of which is for sale. Traditional style lights also hang from the walls and old style radiators blend well with grandfather clocks and antique wooden chests. And there’s something fantastically eccentric about the baby changing facilities… a genuine Silver Cross pram, complete with changing matt. There is a happiness in the air and warmth and hospitality flows easily about the place. Fran tends mainly to the customers with a cheery and respectful manner, whilst Lucia is usually seen working away in the kitchen, carefully creating beautiful cakes and dishes. This is certainly no fast food establishment. Everything here is made freshly to order and special requirements will be catered for wherever possible. Provision is made for
vegetarians and there is also a gluten free range of breads, bagels and porridge. Facilities for disabled customers are good too, with a purpose made ramp and accessible toilet. Cakes are freshly made daily and the choice varies, but the chocolate cake is especially delicious…and fat-free. There is a specials board which offers a home-made soup of the day, with unusual choices such as spinach or butterbean making an appearance, and traditional dishes such as corned beef hash. Healthy options such as poached eggs are available and also a good range of sandwiches such
as smoked salmon or homemade hummus with pitta bread. Mrs Gales is a wonderful venue for every occasion, including business meetings (with free WiFi available), family gatherings and afternoon tea parties. Now fully licensed, they are also looking at hosting events such as champagne celebration parties and have a spacious area downstairs with it’s own facilities. The Lord Mayor is visiting on 1st March for an official opening and we have a feeling that many more people will follow. Call (0113) 2689581 for enquiries.

5 large eggs, 250g caster sugar, 200g chocolate, 200g plain flour, 200ml milk, 1 tsp baking powder, pinch salt, tin condensed milk, 62g cocoa powder, 400g (empty condensed milk tin) milk, chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 170c. Melt chocolate before letting cool. Separate egg whites from yolks and beat together yolks with sugar before gradually adding the melted chocolate. Add milk gradually, beating all the time, then fold in the sieved flour. Beat the egg whites, with the salt, until you form soft peaks. Fold into the chocolate mixture. Place in a greased tin and bake for 55 minutes. To prepare the filling, put condensed milk in a pan with the cocoa powder and mix well. Add milk and stir constantly until you have a thick paste. Set aside to cool. Once the cake and filling are cool, cut cake in half and fill, reserving some filling for the top and sides of the cake. Decorate with chocolate chips. 250g unsalted butter, 200g caster sugar, 4 eggs, 1 tsp vanilla extract, juice 1 lemon, grated zest 2 lemons, 1 tsp baking powder, ½ tsp salt, 50g ground almonds, 280g plain flour
Preheat oven 180c. Beat butter and sugar together until light and creamy. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each addition, before adding vanilla, lemon juice and zest. Mix together dry ingredients and fold into mixture. Pour into greased tin and bake for around 40 minutes. To make the glaze, combine lemon juice and icing sugar, enough to make a thick mixture, and pour over the cooled cake, letting it drip down the sides.
75g butter, chilled and cut into cubes, plus extra for greasing, 350g self raising flour, 1 1â „2 tsp baking powder, 30g caster sugar, 75g sultanas, 150ml milk, 2 eggs, beaten
Preheat oven 200c. Lightly grease baking tray. Put flour and baking powder into mixing bowl. Add the butter and rub in lightly and quickly with your fingertips until mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar and sultanas. Pour 100ml of milk and most of the beaten egg into the mixture. Mix together with a knife to a soft dough, adding a bit more milk if needed. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured work surface and lightly knead just a few times only until gathered together. Gently roll out to around 2cm deep. Cut out rounds and place on baking tray, spaced slightly apart. Glace with reserved egg and bake for around 10 minutes. Serve with jam and cream.

Buying Local Buying local produce can give levels of assurance and satisfaction that supermarkets and major brands are still trying hard to match. Some buy in the names of celebrity chefs or TV personalities. Some celebs go it alone, by marketing products that have little or nothing to do with their on-screen personae. But it’s never the same as establishing a rapport with a local butcher or grocer or, in the case of markets, with the producers themselves. Feather’s Poultry, also known as Egg Man Skipton on social media, is a long established
family business selling a wide range of breeds and types of poultry and their eggs. Not only chicken, but also duck, goose, rhea and quail. Richard and Sue Feather had decided to branch outside their immediate locality and, before Christmas, gave Otley boot sale a try – perhaps they had heard of the hundred-yards-plus public queues formed by noon on fine Sundays. It must have worked for them – they are there every Sunday, always visible from the entry gate.
Sue Feather at Otley boot in February
With all poultry free range, Richard and Sue are also thinking about selling at local farmers’ markets. So, if you’d like to see them at yours, or
would like to be added to their delivery service, you can contact them on 07595 360078, via their website or on Facebook or Twitter.

12 Blast from the Past
The Good Old Days Most people’s perception of the workhouse is guided by two prefixes commonly in use – Victorian or Dickensian. Oliver Twist and all that. But workhouses and state provision for the poor both predate Oliver Twist (1830s) by over two centuries. Poverty in England had become a public issue during the sixteenth century. The feudal system, effectively slavery, had eroded. Although communities were no longer tied, there was only the church to go to when times got hard. In the 1530s Henry VIII closed over 800 monasteries and smaller religious communities. A growing number of the poor and infirm had fewer places to go. In 1572 Parliament compelled parishes to levy taxes to relieve local poverty.
All that remains of Calverley Workhouse on Blackett Street – a dedication or foundation stone acknowledging Sir Walter Blackett (né Calverley) as the benefactor in 1756.
In 1576 towns were compelled to provide work for their unemployed. These and other measures were consolidated in 1601 – the very beginning of the welfare state. The term workhouse is a loose one. The earliest would have been in places where it was thought more economical and effective to provide for the poor and unemployed under one roof, not necessarily purpose built. They were formalised only in 1723, when Parliament sanctioned them as a last resort and deterrent to unemployment. Calverley Workhouse is a good example. No longer standing, it was built in 1756 and donated to the parish by Sir Walter
Blackett. Sir Walter had been born Walter Calverley in 1707 and inherited his father’s baronetcy in 1749. Having quickly sold his father’s estate in Calverley (and Esholt) on inheritance, perhaps Sir Walter thought he should put a little back. It was designed to accommodate as many as forty. In 1728 Walter had also inherited an uncle’s vast wealth on condition that he change his name and marry a cousin. Though Otley born, and with his new wife and wealth in Newcastle (where he was Mayor five times), he nonetheless remained attached to Calverley - his father’s place of birth and family title. He was buried there in 1777.

Prune fruit trees now to ensure a healthy crop later in the year
It Is easy to stay indoors, when the weather is wet, although it is important to keep the garden ticking over – even when it is not possible to work on major items – like winter digging etc, due to the soil being totally saturated. Indoors, it is time to sow the remainder of your half hardy annuals, together with a further batch of sweet peas. Broad beans may be sown in containers, for planting outside as the weather dries up. Then start to waken up your dahlia tubers, begonia corms, arum lilies etc stored over the winter. It is possible to take dahlia and chrysanthemum cuttings to increase your stock, when the new shoots have grown between 3” and 4”. Lightly spray cactus and succulent plants to bring them out of dormancy, and give small amounts of water to over wintered fuchsia and geranium plants. Indoor plants which are showing signs of new growth, should be inspected to see if they need moving to a slightly larger pot, new compost in current pot, then given small amounts of feed to encourage them to flourish for the new season.
Prune soft fruit bushes to an open goblet shape, mulching them if possible, and then start to feed at the end of the month when the ground is drying out. Apple and pear trees should also be pruned as necessary, to remove any crossing or over growing branches. Also prune rose bushes, buddleia, coloured dogwoods, and coppice eucalyptus trees to maintain a reasonable shape. Tidy and trim your herb bed, sowing new varieties as required, cutting back any overgrowing rosemary and sage. Leave lawns and fertilizer until the soil dries out. 16 Readers’ Letters
Readers’ Letters Star Letter Dear Chris, RE: Vernon Wood Letter, Covered Edition 36 I read with interest the above article. Today (Sunday 9 February), Eric Pickles. a government minister, apologised on national TV for the chaos of the flooding experienced in some parts of the UK as a result of listening to 'experts' (consultants) & not listening to the actual local residents. As voiced by a local resident, it should not be a 'blame game' any more.
route goes ahead as planned. Hardly convenient – I may as well just get a bus in to town! Or take the car in. Why not look to initially run the route around the ring road and then, in time, make additions to route it in to town? I appreciate that not all commuters want to go around the ring road, but then again – not all commuters are travelling from Holt Park to Stourton. So, I support the concept of the Trollybus but certainly not the chosen route (for the benefit of the chosen few). Yes it might take longer for ALL Leeds residents to benefit if the route went around the city but it would mean that the plan does benefit ALL Leeds residents, rather than a small minority. After all, it will be ALL Leeds residents that end up paying for the Trollybus now and for a long time to come. Yours,
This also applies to the Leeds transport issue... blaming political parties/city councils is no longer an issue...what has been done, has been done. The important thing is not to continue with bad practices.
M. Sterland Adel
Leeds local residents should be consulted as to what is required transport-wise, as opposed to employing & listening to consultants who do not reside locally. A few time-limited visits would not provide a complete perspective to the situation. Surely Leeds does not deserve to be used as a political 'football'?
Dear Chris,
Regards, Lily Cheng, Moortown
Dear Chris, I read with interest a letter from Vernon Wood in last month’s Covered. I agree with much of Vernon’s opinion. Electric vehicles seem to be the way forward, for the next 50 years or so anyway. What I can’t understand about the Trollybus proposal is why the entire city should welcome such a thing. I’d have to catch a bus to get on the Trollybus if the
I have read with interest some of your reader’s objections to the Trolleybus proposal. I would favour it. Having been used to trams in Leeds until their demise unfortunately in 1959. I also was used to trolleybuses in Bradford as I had Grandparents who lived there, so travelled frequently on them. I know a lot of people do not like the fact that there would have to be alterations particularly in Headingley, but if I lived in Headingley I would welcome any mode of transport which would eliminate the heavy traffic which goes through. I recently visited Berlin and they have a wonderful tram system which winds it way to all the suburbs, in fact most European cities have trams and in cities smaller than Leeds. Sincerely, Mrs Angela Stocks

ROBERT THOMPSON MOUSEMAN OF KILBURN
Robert Thompson’s furniture has travelled worldwide. The business founded in 1919 remains a thriving family firm whose ethics and working practices remain true to those of the master. Robert Thompson was born in Kilburn in North Yorkshire in 1876, son of the village carpenter and wheelwright. Good at school, Robert was sent to Cleckheaton on an engineering apprenticeship. But he preferred carpentry to metalwork and ended up working alongside his father. Though, whereas engineers work in measurements of one-thousandth of an inch, woodworkers rarely work to tolerances one tenth as tight. Robert Thompson the carpenter started work trained in engineering precision. Robert had often passed through Ripon, with its magnificent cathedral. His imagination was fired by the work of William Bromflet, a medieval woodcarver who had carved and decorated many of the cathedral’s furnishings. Robert Thompson resolved that he too would one day work with oak and resurrect the spirit of medieval carving. But it wasn’t until 1919 that he got his big break. A priest from Ampleforth Abbey was visiting a parishioner in Kilburn at the very time he was also looking for someone to make a large crucifix. He was introduced to Robert Thompson, who accepted the job on the spot. More commissions followed and word soon spread. Robert had six men working for him by 1925, then ten in 1928 when he
Robert Thompson wasn’t the only person inspired by the medieval carvings in Ripon Cathedral – this is among those said to have inspired Lewis Carroll’s Alice books.
Mouseman pieces can be as small as pin trays, napkin rings and letter openers. This cheese board was on offer at Ilkley Antiques Fair earlier this month.
received his first commission from the USA – for a dining table and four chairs. In 1934 the craftsmen numbered thirty. Two characteristics of Mouseman pieces are their adzed finish and signature 3-D mouse. An adze is an axe with a curved blade set at right angles. For small pieces, a miniature adze or “flat tool” is used, also leaving the surface looking like planished pewter. The trademark mouse first appeared in 1919, the year Thompson received his first artistic commission, and remains the company’s trademark today. Robert Thompson’s Craftsmen Ltd is a thriving business in Kilburn and includes a shop and visitor centre/museum. Pieces also regularly crop up at auctions, notably at Hartleys (Ilkley) and Tennant’s (Leyburn).
Hartleys (Ilkley) often has a selection of Mouseman furniture in catalogue sales. This pulpit sold for £750 in September.

SPEEDY SALES BOOST MARKET Homes across Yorkshire are being let or sold more and more quickly, latest research has revealed. While the rental market has always been buoyant with demand outstripping supply in many areas, increased customer confidence and better access to mortgages has given house sales a new lift. So much so that on average it is taking eightand-a-half weeks to shake hands on an agreed sales price – that’s two weeks quicker than this time last year and the fastest time since the prerecession days of 2007. The fall – which amounts to a fifth – signals a positive start to 2014 for home sellers, and with the peak buying time of Spring just around the corner the market is looking for further improvement. One-in-ten homes are reported to be sold within the
first week, and two-thirds within a month. It also brings the speed with which homes are let or sold much closer together. Yet the fact that some properties have been on the market for more than a year underlines the importance of having an asking price that is realistic. Increased activity in the market is particularly good news for first time purchasers and those wishing to move up in a more affordable and stable Yorkshire housing market. Carly and Danni rock their classic LBD and black playsuit. Showing that less is more in some situations as they both looks so glamorous. Carly’s gold pointed heels really complement her LBD black and gold together are a powerful combination!

Stefan only wears black and white, as he thinks simple is more effective, he prefers to stand out by using texture clashing rather than colours. He manages to pull off double leather without making it look over the top.

with your Special Someone! Fitness Fun: Workout These colder months tempt all of us to indulge in crisps and chocolaty comfort foods we end up regretting afterwards. The momentary euphoria of heart-shaped treats is nothing compared to a healthy heart pumping and the excitement of starting a fitness regime together with your partner. If you're having a hard time getting motivated this winter to work off the unwanted weight, Jari Love (certified personal trainer and fitness DVD star) says: 'Research shows that 94 percent of couples stick with their fitness programs when they work out together.' Many gyms offer access and exercise regimes specially for couples; it's the perfect opportunity to exercise side-by-side and as a team with your significant other. There are numerous ways you can strengthen both your bodies and relationship with plenty of (clean) fitness activities. Cardio is a horrible word for any fitness buff - a word that requires you to put in your headphones, blare out some music, and just get running. This being said, going for a jog or a bike ride with your partner whilst having a leisurely talk is a great way to simultaneously get fit and spend that little extra bit of time together. If running isn’t your thing, then why not find a couple that you socialise with and challenge them to a sporting contest? Depending on your interests, you could have a 2 on 2 game of basketball, go for a
round of golf, or, the most obvious choice, a doubles' tennis match. (Just try not to be too competitive!) If you’ve ‘been there, done that’ with gyms, or you’re already active members of a gym and want to try something different, then how about dance lessons or maybe even ice skating? (Best not to mix the two just yet, though!). From now on, Salsa and Tango won’t be junky food and drink; you’ll be hot-stepping your way to a healthy lifestyle. If hot isn’t your thing and you’d prefer to chill with your partner, then go for ice skating. It's a great form of exercise for toning your legs (and also your abs when you erupt in a fit of laughter watching your partner fall to the floor after trying to show off!). Don't forget the relaxation aspects of exercising; winding down in-between those rigorous regimes is just as important as warming up and working out! The perfect intermission for you and your partner is to spend a spa day together. This will give your body and mind time to unwind whilst also giving opportunity to enjoy the whole experience together. Get in touch with your local gym and see what opportunities are available for you and your partner this season. Have fun! Written by Daniel Roberts. Sponsored by Trinity Fitness Sports Centre. Charlotte Newman, LJWB Personality of the Year – an inspiring story The Leeds Jewish Welfare Board Pride Awards recognise outstanding achievement in six categories each year: Community Volunteer, Leader of Youth, Sports Personality and Male, Female and Youth Personality. Reading about all the nominees brings heartwarming realisation of the selfless commitment of ordinary people to their community and to the well-being of others. None is more moving than the story of Female Personality of the Year 2013, Charlotte Newman. A promising law student at Leeds University, in 2011 she was looking forward to graduating with her year group and practising Family Law. However, she was diagnosed with cancer and the nightmare began. Chemo and surgery brought hope of a

Charlotte then had more chemo and a stem cell transplant, endured a month in isolation and radiotherapy – finally winning the battle. In remission, Charlotte became the face of the Teenage Cancer Trust and engaged in an epic round of fund-raising. A series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in March this year featured a video of Charlotte’s journey and saw her addressing the audience. Nearly a million pounds in donations resulted,

In her own words: “I have taken on the role of a 'buddy' to the new cancer patients. I am able to offer them support, a shoulder to cry on, but most importantly I am able to offer them hope.” The good news is that Charlotte has taken a First Class Honours Degree and is poised for her career in Family Law. Wedding Dresses through the Ages St Margaret’s Church in Horsforth was the venue for a wedding fair with a difference on Sunday 16 February. St Margaret’s Social/ Events Group presented seventythree dresses, spanning the ninety years between 1923 and 2013, around sixty dotted around the church and the rest modelled in a show by brides past, prospective and their families. And, unlike other shows, there was only one commercial venture represented – two if you count the church vying for business as a wedding venue. A programme listed and dated each dress and the bride. Some had a story to go with them – notably the earliest, from 1923. Bride Martha Marshall’s father passed away unexpectedly several weeks before the wedding. So she ditched the

No Meetup with Leeds Live Music and Art Lovers As part of our ongoing look at Leeds Meetup groups, all organised online via social media, we decided to connect with Leeds Live Music and Art Lovers. The group has over 800 members with as many as five meetups each week, mainly music and for a wide variety of tastes. They had a meetup planned for Sunday 9 February – at 1230 in the 1853 Gallery at Salts Mill, Shipley. The plan was to start there and go on to all the other art, industrial heritage and retail galleries spread over several floors of the immense Victorian mill. Then join for coffee in one of the mill’s restaurants or cafés. But things didn’t go according to plan – neither theirs nor ours.
Apart from Salts Mill’s own art and industrial heritage displays, there are several other art, cultural, design and leisure retail outlets – this early C20th fine art bronze was on show in Carlton Antiques (2nd floor).
Rules of engagement One group member had discovered that 1853 Gallery was closed for refurbishment. Not a problem – at least for those who checked the group’s web pages that morning. Plan B – meet at 1325 on the second floor. But the building is immense and full of art lovers – just where on the second floor? It wasn’t like meeting other groups such as mountain bikers, photographers or cake-bakers. There were no clues. We missed them.
Plan C Make the most of it. Not only is Salts Mill a remarkably well preserved monument to

Sadly Plan C also ground to a halt after we approached the Los Angeles based David Hockney Inc for clearance to publish. The reproduction fee is $400 for each of his pictures. So the use of the

Seven Arts It’s no secret that Chapel Allerton is now seen as one of Leeds’ most vibrant suburbs. The collection of cafes, bars and boutique shops make this urban village a popular destination for families and young professionals alike. And Chapel Allerton even hosts it’s very own annual Arts Festival, running through the last week in August. Located in the midst of it all is Seven, opened as an independent arts space in July 2007. Seven offer a programme of cultural events most evenings and a café/ bar open from 10.30am – midnight daily, serving food from 12 noon. It’s a welcoming place and great to meet up with friends and enjoy some food before an event or even just enjoy a coffee and, perhaps, read the paper. The good news is that even if you only visit the café/bar, profits will still be used to promote the arts programme.
The aim was to make art accessible to all and inspire creativity within the community and Seven was 10 years in planning, and is run as a notfor-profit Community Interest Company. Promoting local talent as well as attracting work from further afield, Seven is an attractive and versatile venue, which can be adapted to host a variety of shows. Regular events include Screen Seven film nights, Kill For A Seat Comedy, dance and music events.
“The evening attracted a diverse crowd, from a tiny baby wearing ear defenders through to elderly ladies”
We were here for the EP launch of Yorkshire band, Little Braves, presented by MEWL Music, who grew out of Seven Unplugged, the monthly acoustic show at Seven, and so far they’ve presented a variety of genres including opera, folk and world music. Tonight’s listing centres around an indie-pop and folk vibe, and soon every seat in the house was taken. The evening attracted a diverse crowd, from a tiny baby wearing ear defenders through to elderly ladies, and it was great to see an audience enthralled by the music and not talking the whole way through, as you so often find. Of course, having the bar just at the other side of a soundproofed door is a big bonus, if you do want to combine a night with friends and entertainment. Support acts kick of with a couple of songs from Hearts of Lions, before moving on to Second Hand Wings, a band known for catchy indie melodies and soaring vocal

harmonies. Obvious influences include Laura Marling and Fleetwood Mac and, with links to Leeds and Manchester, they have become regulars on BBC Radio, as have the final support, Jacobean Ruff. Here’s a band who play a variety of instruments and have a damn good time doing it! With guitars, mandolins and violins they presented a clever blend of traditional folk with a
modern edge. So, to the main act… It’s hard to believe that five piece Little Braves only formed in the summer of 2013, with such an accomplished sound and rich harmonies. This band have already played the Green Man Festival and we’re expecting more great things from them, and from Seven, in the future. www.sevenleeds.co.uk

Rugby League for all Schools Leeds Rugby Foundation’s Rugby League Development Plan for Leeds has been assured a second year through continuing partnership and sponsorship by PIMS Ltd, a Leeds based a heating, rewiring house refurbishment specialist. The Development Plan was launched with the aim of giving every youngster in Leeds the opportunity to play Rugby League - and the chance of attending a Leeds Rhinos or Hunslet Hawks game. To that end, the Foundation now has a staff of 13 full time Schools and Community Coaches, led by Leeds Rugby League Development Manager Leon Crick.
Colin Smith, Managing Director of PIMS, with wife Kath, is pictured here with LRF Ambassador Keith Senior. The former Rhinos, England and GB wing and centre remained at the very top of the game throughout the noughties.
Fighting on the Home Front – the Legacy of Women in World War One We have all seen Kate Adie on TV, in sober camouflage gear equally soberly reporting from some strife-torn area. Her writing style is quite different, just as direct and concise, but also dry and funny and with a wry sense of the absurd. This account of how women responded to the challenges and upheaval of WWI is based on original and meticulous research and Adie brings vividly alive the resourceful and courageous individuals she focuses on. All classes were affected, from princesses to parlourmaids,
with even Queen Mary planting potatoes and knitting for Britain. There are some astonishing portraits, notably of Flora Sandes, a vicar’s daughter from Poppleton. She had some St John Ambulance training and volunteered for nursing. In the
Having won every club and national honour possible, and having been elected to a World XIII for three years, Keith’s new role with LRF gives him an ideal opportunity to continue contributing to the game in general and Leeds in particular. Balkans from 1914, she realised her experience with a shotgun might be handy and was taken on as Private Sandes, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Serbian Army. She was awarded Serbia’s most prestigious medal for bravery before being invalided out. Back home, she briefed the War Office and took to public speaking, raising funds and spearheading donations of clothing. That women could do men’s work – and do it very well – certainly helped them eventually towards getting the vote, but Adie makes it clear that entrenched attitudes died hard and that liberation was acceptable “for the duration” but, in many cases, for no longer. Fighting on the Home Front is published by Hodder and Stoughton at £20. A paperback version will be published in April and it is available now as an e-book.

Young Artists Recitals at Lotherton Hall Lotherton Hall is an Edwardian gentleman’s country residence, formerly the home of the Gascoigne family. In 1968, Sir Alvary and Lady Gascoigne gave it to Leeds City Council. It is now a museum, but still has the delightful feel of a family home. There are impressive collections of furniture, sculpture, fine and decorative arts, ceramics, costume and jewellery. There is also an extensive park, an Edwardian garden and a bird garden. Every year, there are classical chamber music recitals held in the Drawing Room, using the historic grand pianos, one of which used to belong to the Salt family of Saltaire. Whilst some of the bulbs planted by the Friends have been funded by families wishing to celebrate the lives of loved ones they have lost and by Marie Curie Cancer Care, most have been funded by the Friends themselves – through Membership subscriptions and proceeds from the sale of their beautiful calendar, greetings cards and books. Autumn 2014 will see the Friends of Roundhay Park plant yet more daffodils but they will also begin to plant additional spring flowers such as snowdrops and bluebells to add to those already in the Park. Before then, however, they are planning to develop a new wild flower meadow down
towards Lakeside which will be clearly visible as visitors walk up from Lakeside to the Mansion. Working parties are on the 3rd Thursday and the second Saturday of each month from 10 am to lunchtime – meeting generally at the Mansion Car Park. In addition to the working parties, a small group dedicated to tending the Friends Garden, which is tucked away behind Canal Gardens, work on most Tuesday mornings throughout the year. New people are welome to join in.
If you would like more information about working parties or about joining Friends of Roundhay Park, email info@ forp.co.uk or call David Binns (FoRP Secretary) on 0113 2932893. Membership of Friends of Roundhay Park costs only £10 for an individual, £15 for a couple or £20 for a family of 4. Members get 3 newletters a year, free entry to Tropical World, monthly email updates about what's happening in the Park and opportunity to influence future developments within the Park.

Swim, Bike, Run – the Brownlee brothers’ triathlon story

the mix of rivalry, interdependence and mutual support the brothers experienced, both in their relationship and in their training schedule. It is all in the book, written in collaboration with Tom Fordyce, and told with honesty, humour and self-deprecation. The impression is of two ordinary young men who have achieved something extraordinary without at all losing touch with their roots; they still live in Yorkshire, train together and cycle the old routes. But they pull no punches when it comes to describing just how relentlessly hard it all is. And though their pleasure in cycling is manifest, they still hate the bitter winter cold! And for all you keen cyclists out there, there are plenty of training tips to be shared.
The story behind the Brownlee brothers’ success at world and Olympic level is a fascinating one. How did “two skinny lads from West Yorkshire” (as the blurb puts it) become the best triathletes in the world? The Yorkshire landscape certainly helped; no need for studio simulation exercise when you have all those hills to train on in the fresh air. Family support was crucial too, especially at decisive moments. What parents would not want their son to study medicine at Cambridge? But when it came to the choice, they stood behind Jonny. Another essential factor was
