Hello and welcome to Edition 25 of Covered – the magazine that delivers. We’re now well into Spring and as I write this note heavy snow is falling. But, fifteen minutes ago the sun was shining, the sky blue and I was outside in just a shirt! I’m sure readers will join me in hoping for some consistent weather, preferably dry and sunny! Speaking of consistency, Covered now reaches 45,000 households across much of Leeds and Ilkley – the highest single home distribution of any editorially led monthly in the area. We try not to reinvent the wheel each month but retain a familiar format – good hyper-local news, views and features complimented by advertising messages from reliable local companies. That said, we’re always keen to hear suggestions and ideas from readers and particularly from volunteer-led or community organisations that would benefit from some publicity. The Cheerful Chilli is a restaurant and tearooms on the East Chevin Road in Otley. Opened in 1999, and previously known as The Ramblers’ tearooms, it is situated in a converted farmhouse and is full of character, with a relaxed atmosphere, fresh flowers and an eclectic mix of work by local artists on the walls. The emphasis here is all about the imaginative menu and the ethos of food bringing people together to have a good time whilst sharing wholesome, home-cooked food.
The Cheerful Chilli Owner and chef David Longfield is passionate that every dish is freshly prepared, even the bread, with the focus being on flavoursome, good value food and the generous portions certainly represent that. The fact that the menu is entirely vegetarian almost seems like an aside, with the majority of customers being meat eaters, simply keen to enjoy the flavoursome and satisfying menu. Having said that, David is personally very aware of the needs of vegetarian and vegan diners and is keen to cater for everyone. He and his team are happy to discuss and create dishes with any dietary requirement in mind. The restaurant menu fuses influences from around the world to create something to suit everyone’s taste. Popular dishes are sweetcorn cakes as a starter, and enchiladas or aubergine involtini for main dishes. Puddings range from a beautiful selection of homemade ice creams to the decadent chocolate nemesis, which is described as not for the faint hearted! Another popular feature is the banquet menu, which is available for 4 or more diners, and is ideal for parties and larger groups. Private dining for up to 80 people can be catered for at The Cheerful Chilli, with customers encouraged to make the venue their own for the evening by bringing their own music, wine, and even decorations. In keeping with the ‘good value’ ethic, The Cheerful Chilli welcomes guests who bring their own drinks and charges £1 corkage, or a new wine and beer menu was also introduced last year offering a good selection of drinks, all suitable for vegetarians.

For the tearooms the menu differs and changes weekly, but generally offers a selection of tarts and sandwiches, as well as a few popular restaurant dishes, and a wide range of cakes and desserts, all of which can be purchased whole to take away. The Cheerful Chilli are popular traders at local farmers’ markets, and also provide outside catering for any event as well as seasonal products to take away; picnic hampers for a summer ramble on the Chevin, or in the outside courtyard, and Christmas puddings and nut roasts later in the year. The future is looking bright too with plans to convert the neighbouring barn by autumn this year. Accessed from the same courtyard, this additional venue will include a second kitchen and large banqueting room with mezzanine floor above, and will be available to cater for larger parties and also to introduce cookery lessons. It’s looking like David and his team will certainly be busy, but with their laid-back yet attentive style, I’m sure they’ll manage just fine. 500g cooked chickpeas 1/2 chopped red onion Red chilli - chopped Handful fresh parsley Tablespoon cumin powder Tablespoon paprika Teaspoon chilli powder Teaspoon cinnamon powder 3 cloves garlic Drizzle olive oil 200g plain flour Salt and pepper to taste Vegetable oil for frying
Falafel Place all of the ingredients, except flour and oil, in a large bowl and blend with a hand blender. When smooth(ish) add a drizzle of oil and flour, bit by bit, until you get a smooth, dry(ish) consistency. Roll into small balls and deep fry in vegetable oil until golden. Serve with fresh salad and yogurt and mint sauce.

225g plain flour pinch salt 50g lard 50g margarine 30ml water 5 medium red onions 1 cup red wine 1 cup balsamic vinegar 200g brown sugar 300g soft goats’ cheese log Basil, chopped finely Drizzle olive oil
Goat’s Cheese & Red Onion Tart Peel and slice the red onions and put into a pan with the red wine and balsamic vinegar and sugar. Cook down on a low heat until the onions are soft and sweet. To make the pastry, mix flour and salt in bowl and rub in fat. Use knife to mix in cold water to form stiff dough. Knead lightly on a floured surface before rolling out. Blind bake 6 pastry cases in 4 inch tart cases for 5-10 minutes. Fill with cooked red onion mixture before placing a generous slice of goats’ cheese on top. Blend the olive oil with the basil and drizzle on the tarts. Bake for further 15 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Serve with fresh salad.

250ml Stout 250g unsalted butter 75g cocoa 400g caster sugar 150 ml pot natural yoghurt 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 275g plain flour 2 ½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 300g cream cheese 150g icing sugar 125ml double or whipping cream
Chocolate Guinness Cake Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius, and butter and line a 23cm springform tin. Pour the Stout into a large saucepan, add the butter and heat until the butter is melted, at which time you should whisk in the cocoa and sugar. In a bowl, beat the yoghurt with the eggs and vanilla and then pour into the beery, buttery pan and finally whisk in the flour and bicarbonate. Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined tin and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Leave to cool completely in the tin on a cooling rack before icing. To make icing, lightly whip the cream and the cheese together until smooth. Sieve over the icing sugar and then beat them both together. Ice the top of the black cake so that it resembles the frothy top of the fantastic pint of beer.

Pudsey Live at Home Art Group Pudsey Live at Home is a local branch, if you like, of a national scheme inspired in 1988. Run under the auspices of the charity MHA (Methodist Homes), it is dedicated to supporting retired folk in the community and in their own homes. That support can sometimes be the difference between a person continuing to live at home and entering sheltered or care accommodation. Though MHA itself goes back much further than that. Founded in 1943, they are now celebrating 70 years of providing accommodation and community support. Pudsey Live at Home is one of twelve services and facilities operated by MHA in Leeds – their nearest neighbours are the similar Live at Home schemes in Farsley and Horsforth. PLAH provides support both at home and in the community, including outings, holidays and weekly social groups. One

Leeds and Bradford Making Friends Leeds and Bradford Friendship Group has been running for twenty years now, under different guises. Typically around a half of the 120 strong retirement fellowship meet on the first Wednesday of the month at Pudsey Civic Hall. Guest speakers on a wide range of subjects entertain between 2 and 3pm, when the meeting breaks for refreshments and general socialising. There are also organised outings, walks and meals. On the day of Covered’s visit Geoff Spurr, a regular on the social club circuit, gave an illustrated talk about narrow boats on our inland waterway system.

With spring officially started and the days lengthening, we are looking forward to better weather to come – in order to start sowing seeds and planting out to bring the garden to life. This has been a very wet winter, which means a large percentage of the nutrients in the soil will have been washed away. It will be advisable to spread fertilizers and mulches, to every part of the garden as the soil starts to warm up. On frost free days prune your roses, hybrid teas harder then floribundas, and tie in your climbers after cutting out old the old stems. Ensure all old leaves and stems are removed, to reduce the risk of black spot and other diseases remaining on the soil. Then apply a rose fertilizer around the base of each plant, adding a mulch if available. Other perennials, including buddleia may also be trimmed and tided, adding a general fertilizer to boost their performance. Spring bulbs are looking their best at the moment, and again remember to feed them as the flowers go over – to build up the bulbs for next year. 5 Tips to Get on Your Bike Inspired by Victoria Pendleton, Wiggo, David Stone and the Brownlees, have you used the bike as much as you planned over the Winter? As Spring has sprung, here’s a few tips to get you back in the saddle.

Give Your Bike a 30 Second Check
Check your tyres are properly inflated and that any quick release mechanisms are holding the wheels in place. A properly inflated tyre can take some considerable effort out of cycling and reduce the risk of punctures. Check the brakes are squeezing the tyres enough and that the brake pads are hitting the rim of the wheel, not the tyre, enabling for a gentler more controlled stop. Hopefully the saddle and handle bars are set at the right height but if not there can easily be adjusted with a small spanner. Is your helmet secure? Don’t wear it too high as you want to ensure that your forehead is protected whilst if you tip your head forward do you feel any movement? Last check, as you set off is to make sure that the chain is going through the cogs and derailleurs without catching and that you’re able to go through the gears without slippage.

Although they say no-one ever forgets how to ride a bike, if it’s been a while your muscles may have forgotten the effort required at times so don’t set off

on a 10 mile route straight away. Plan a short ride out or even ease yourself back in on an exercise bikes or anyone can book in for a Spin bike session at Horsforth’s Trinity Fitness before hitting the road.

The best routes for cycling are not always obvious. Leeds City Council have produced some excellent cycling maps for the city including North and North West Leeds. These make cycling easier, safer and more pleasant. Get a copy free of charge from the Gateway Information Centre at Leeds City station.

Ride as if You Are Invisible
Even in florescent clothing it can be difficult for drivers to see you. Ride as if you are invisible anticipating cars misjudging your speed or signalling without notice. In particular never edge up on the inside of a vehicle at a junction as the driver is unlikely to be aware you are there. Ride about 1 metre from the kerb and be prepared for obstructions in the road.

Remember the Deaf Granny Most children love a lie in on a Saturday with a bit of TV but as a parent you probably worry that they should be getting out the house more - getting kids interested in anything apart from DVDs and video games can be difficult. Well, Covered has discovered that there are children who are not only happy to give up their Saturday morning at home and mix with kids of all ages, they do it voluntarily. So, we dragged student writer John Gledhill out of bed and away from his cereal on a cold Saturday morning, to find out just exactly what kind of magic Leeds Children’s Theatre (LCT) is performing and who is this deaf granny?! ‘The deaf granny is a way of getting them to remember to project’, smiles senior LCT member Judith Unwin as we sit to the side watching a group of kids performing. ‘I’m the deaf granny and I’m sat at the back of the theatre – if they don’t project I can’t hear what they’re saying on stage so how will an audience?’ ‘Deaf granny!’ she calls out to one child who mumbles her lines; both Covered and the younger member have a twinkle our eyes – LCT is an amusing place. Ask Judith what her official title is and she’ll tell you: ‘we don’t have titles’. Indeed, younger member, Sarah, 14, from Bramley, tells us she likes LCT ‘because staff are not like teachers and I feel more confident here, I get to learn something new and be creative’. Based in the Carriageworks Theatre in Millennium Square, LCT has been going since 1935. Famous names to have passed through include John Craven, Angela Griffin and the legendary Peter O’Toole! However, while some children do go on to study drama, member Janine Walker, 32, says ‘it’s not the aim to become famous, but to enjoy it [theatre]. The
Children are not always confident when they first come but eventually begin to experience a different side to themselves in a very safe space’. The workshop is a series of exercises which are hugely entertaining thanks to their improvisational nature. LCT member Ian Goodison – a school drama teacher notes proudly ‘we are the only theatre where children don’t have prompts – they must get themselves out of it if they forget their lines’. Covered witnessed kids jumping in to help out their fellow members whose minds had gone blank. Such a display of togetherness and communal support seems to be the ethos of LCT where members range from seven to seventy! Covered is going to remember the deaf granny and tell you this loudly: LCT receives no funding. All members and staff volunteer their services and are not paid. They put on two plays a year, which they promote themselves to raise money to keep going. To support them all you have to do is to buy a ticket to their show and enjoy yourself. The next one is Jacqueline Wilson’s The Lottie Project from Tues 16 – Sun 21 April.

Trackrod Motor Club Back in 1981, Alwoodley Community Association found itself with a number of rally enthusiasts. Leeds based, the group wanted to appeal to a wider Yorkshire audience. So, not wanting to adopt a local place name, Trackrod Motor Club was born. They now have a county wide membership of 120. Around a dozen compete in local, national and international amateur events. Around forty are marshals and several hold high office with the UK governing body of all motor sports – RAC Motor Sports Association. The club meets on Tuesdays. The first Tuesday of the month includes a committee meeting at Old Modernians Association clubhouse, Cookridge. Other Tuesdays are at various pubs. They are responsible for the organisation of two major events - Lookout Rally at Melbourne Airfield, York, (next 14 April) and a national rally, with an international field, staged between Pickering and Scarborough in September.

It’s easy to sit back – I’m not a confident person, but I don’t want to let people manipulate what I do’, she continues. ‘A girl holding a balloon… you can’t question that. Art should inspire you to use your head a bit.’ Becci’s art inspires you to use your head a lot. She does illustrations of animals that seem to highlight the negative impact of humans on the natural world – one striking piece is of a grizzly bear walking on two legs carrying Morrison’s shopping bags! Not to be discouraged, she took her unique portfolio to Arts Café where they agreed to let her hang her
We’re Top 10 for Crime Claims! A recent “survey” by on-line price comparison site MoneySupermarket placed LS13 in 1st place, LS18 in 7th place and LS28 in 10th place nationally for insurance claims made after a burglary. Although these “surveys” are to generate publicity, this time it is backed-up by a report from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) that puts West Yorkshire in 2nd place for burglaries (after London) last year with 13 per 1,000 people, when the national average is 9. Although they say that crime has dropped in the last 10 years. Covered checked the police crime reports (through their newsletter) for the last quarter of 2012 and found that burglaries for October were 19; November 16 and December 20. This doesn’t include vehicle crime or criminal damage. The most notable thefts were mountain bikes from sheds and garages. Some may think who’d nick a bike? But when these bikes can be over £3,000…? Other households targeted are those with europrofile locks on
work. However, she didn’t have enough money for the amount of supplies she would require! Undeterred, Becci discovered a website, Kickstarter: ‘you put your idea on – mine was having my own exhibition that would only be possible if I reached £300,’ she explains. People then pledge money if they like the idea - paying only if the financial target is reached for which they receive one of her prints. ‘I made £460 in ten days; one guy pledged £80 people are amazing!’ she says. New PCSO for Farsley Farsley has a new face in the fight against crime PCSO Ruth Freely, of West Yorkshire Police, has been appointed as the town's new police community support officer. Ruth, who has been an officer for three-and-a-half years, was previously based in Bradford and Mirfield. She joined the Pudsey Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), based at Pudsey police station, as the dedicated officer for Farsley in December.Since then, she has been working within the community to get to know local residents and identify the policing issues affecting the town. Ruth said: "I am still in the process of getting to know Farsley, but I have already identified some issues
that I am keen to help tackle. Anti-social behaviour is a particular concern in some areas, such as on the Farfield estate and on parts of Town Street. "I'm also aware of concerns about parking and traffic problems outside local schools, especially when parents are dropping off or picking up their children, and I will be working closely with schools to try and address this. One initiative I am organising is a safety week at Westroyd infant school, to educate both children and their parents about road safety and the importance of parking safely and considerately. "But I am also keen to hear from local residents, community groups and businesses if they have any other concerns that I can help them with, and I am looking forward to getting out and about, and meeting more people over the coming months." Ruth added that she would be chairing regular Farsley PACT (Police and Communities Together) meetings, held approximately every six weeks at St John's Church in Farsley, where residents can raise policing concerns. Postcard Project This spring sees Creative Calverley launch a community arts project open to people of all ages and abilities. The idea is simple - just take a postcard and do one of the following: • • • • • • •
Lowtown Rises to ‘Good’ Following recent inspection, Pudsey Lowtown Primary School has been given the seal of approval by education inspectors after moving up to a ranking of ‘good’ in its latest Ofsted report. The inspection report also states that ‘Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is outstanding.’ and that children ‘show a high level of care for others.’ The inspectors praised senior leaders and staff for being ‘excellent role models.’ Teachers and support staff were praised for working ‘together very well to ensure that pupils make good progress by making good use of different resources and planning for individual needs.’ The watchdog also credited the headteacher and her senior leadership team along with the support of governors for working ‘extremely well to improve the quality of teaching since the last inspection report. The Chair of governors, Sue Wood spoke on behalf of the governing body when she congratulated the whole school community on achieving a good report which recognises all the hard work the school does. Headteacher Clare Downham said: “We are delighted with the result of our recent inspection. The commitment and passion of every member of staff, the support from parents, governors and the community and the energy and enthusiasm of our amazing children has finally been endorsed by Ofsted.”

Just Do It – Challenge Calverley “Challenge Calverley” the initiative by Creative Calverley to encourage the people of Calverley to “just do it, stop talking about it” and challenge themselves, improve the community, or raise money for charity is now in its third month and things are starting happening. One local resident has set up “Calverley Park Fairy” and aims to improve the use of Calverley Park by encouraging people to use the park responsibly and with consideration for others e.g. clear up dog mess. Another person has scheduled a parachute jump for May. Continuing the sporting theme another person is running three 10k runs to raise money for the RNLI. Gael Timbers, Founder of Creative Calverley said “We are delighted that the people of Calverley are doing so many things to help themselves, others and the wider community. Keep it up”.

33-year-old Laura weighed 17st but since joining her local Slimming World group in Farsley, she is 5st 4lb lighter. She’s also won the group’s Greatest Loser 2013 prize for the member who’s lost the most weight – and all in just 13 months. Laura says: “I feel like a new woman since losing weight – I look so different that people I haven’t seen for a while say they don’t recognize me! I’ve got more energy and I’m much more confident too.”

After receiving a leaflet through the door, Laura joined her local Slimming World group. She says: "I was embarrassed and terrified that I was going to be the biggest person there. But I needn’t have worried because everyone there was so friendly and welcoming."

Rodley Park Refurbishment In an effort to keep Leeds green, Leeds City Council recently announced that funding has been provided to improve Rodley Park. Up to £77,000 will fund numerous improvements such as new play areas for children, new plants, improvements to drainage and the bowling green, new footpaths, gates, and replacing worn picnic tables, benches and bins. Plenty of plans then. But is this renovation in the interest of Rodley's citizens? After speaking to Leeds City Council, Covered then spoke to a handful of Rodley's townsfolk to discover if their input has been sought and to what extent they support the project. From The Rodley Barge pub, David Wintersburn was unaware of the project, but he shared with Covered what he feels are the park's main issues. "The drainage is terrible. The park really needs redoing." Dave and his colleague both agreed that the Bowling Green is also dire, and could do with being stripped altogether. If the project proceeds and promises made by the Council are kept, they're completely on board. One gentleman told Covered how his wife is also
supportive: "My wife's all for it. It'll stop kids running off into the streets." Residents feel that a revamped park will become more secure for playing children. "It's a good thing, really." one resident said; “Rodley Park is very worn down and overshadowed by other parks nearby”. Covered spoke to LCC about the refurbishment and their approach to involve the public. Over 100 letters were sent out, inviting citizens to public meetings where they could pool their ideas. They also uploaded a brief proposal online, which anyone could comment on and share their views. "When people's issues are identified, they tend to coincide with our own. It's encouraging to know we're on the same wavelength." A Leeds City Council spokesperson told Covered, "We want user's comments." "Ensuring our open spaces are kept in good condition is a priority." Peter Gruen, Leeds City Council member said, "These projects will make a big difference to the areas that are being refurbished and will give the communities further facilities to enjoy." It is inherently apparent that the public is all for the renovation. It is encouraging to know LCC welcome the public's input and that throughout 2013; Rodley Park is set to undergo thorough improvement.
