This month our Food & Drink feature takes a look at Bar t’at in Ilkley – a great destination that is ideal for those of you that like to take in a bit of the fabulous Yorkshire countryside too. Bar t’at Tucked away in a quiet corner of the genteel spa town of Ilkley sits a lovely little place going by the very apt name of Bar T’at, a linguistic spin on the old rhyme for which the town is fabled. A quick look at Trip Advisor reveals a plethora of 5 star reviews, aimed largely at the quality of the food, range of ales and friendly staff, so we decided it was time to pay them a visit to find out more.

Bar T’at is situated on Cunliffe Road but can also be accessed from the main central car park around the Moors Shopping Centre. Approaching from the front you get a sense that this end terrace property was once a house or a shop, now doubled in size by an extension built onto the side, and it’s reminiscent of the ever popular Fanny’s Ale House over in

Saltaire. Once inside though, it’s very different. Though the range of cask, keg and bottled ales may rival Fanny’s, the space is a lot more airy and relaxed and there’s a multi level beer garden to the rear of the bar which is ideal for a quick pint whilst out walking the dog. This place has also got something that a lot of real ale pubs lack… outstanding food.

There’s a new team in place here at Bar T’at and Head Chef, David Dockerty, is one of the newest additions. Having worked previously at restaurants and bars largely around the Horsforth area of Leeds, David is keen to expand the range available and to showcase the venue as a great place for a spot of evening dining. Whilst keeping the popular classic pub food such as Lishman’s sausage and mash, home made pie of the day and fish and chips, the new menu which has been introduced includes such delights as smoked haddock risotto, served with a poached egg, to start with and main courses include pan fried salmon with fondant potato and a pancetta and baby onion fricassee or a cajun spiced lamb, served with coriander rice and salsa. cabbage and dates with a red wine jus. Peanut butter cheesecake with chocolate ice cream and chocolate sauce is one of the desserts available. Pre-booking is necessary for all Christmas and New Year meals though. The labyrinth of rooms at Bar T’at offer something for everyone, with quiet nooks and crannies for a quiet, romantic meal through to a larger bar area for chatting with friends and a downstairs ‘cellar’ dining room, which has a cosy candlelit atmosphere and is ideal for a family get-together. There’s even a separate function room where up to 30-40 people can be catered for, and this is a great space for private parties or an afternoon tea or buffet, and has it’s own access to the beer garden. This may all change soon though as the venue is soon to undergo a refurbishment as part of a chain of 15 bars run by Market Town Taverns. Each

bar feels quite unique though and is run independently by the team in house. General Manager at Bar T’at, Sarah Brown, leads the relatively small, but friendly and attentive, team here and talks through some of the real ales on offer… and there’s quite a lot. There’s a great range of 8 cask ales available, Timothy Taylor’s, Black Sheep, Roosters and Ilkley Brewery all have a permanent place on the bar, whilst the remaining pumps are dedicated to an ever changing range of guest ales. Usually, one pump features a single brewery’s ales for a few weeks, enabling customers to get to know that whole brewery’s range and they always have a dark beer (mild, stout or porter) available on one of the other pumps. Taster trays are available for either cask or keg beer and are a great way to try a variety of drinks, offering 3 smaller glasses which equal a pint. There’s an unusual

selection of bottled beers and ciders too, from Belgium’s Floris chocolate beer through to Timmerman’s Peche fruit ale. Hot drinks are also served throughout the day. Amongst the rave reviews found online, comments such as “the waiter remembered what we were drinking” and “the staff recommended an excellent choice” seem to crop up time and time again and it’s this sort of service which has made Bar T’at popular with the locals. Now, with a new and invigorated menu available, this seems the ideal place to visit for a good meal after a spot of shopping or if you’re looking forward to a nice pint after wandering out on Ilkla Moor baht ‘at. INSPIRATION FROM SAFE HAVEN To have a spirit of interest…are we really interested enough to do something positive or do we sit back and let others pick up the flack. Today I heard about the fire at the Manchester Dogs home where silly mistakes were made and 50 or so dogs were killed by a youth probably more afraid of his own shadow than anything. Yet all the people rally round in uproar and send masses of dog food for those that survived. Did the dogs not need the food beforehand? Yes you may say , but no one was that bothered about it before the fire. If we come forward to the present our own needs exhaust us and take up all our time, don’t they, yet if a catastrophe happened such as this we would forget ourselves immediately and run and do something to help instead. You know it’s the same story every time isn’t it, a man only helps his fellow when the insistence is on

being noticed for his efforts, otherwise why bother? The truth of the matter lies in the old saying what goes around comes around. Helping another isn’t an option it’s a necessity in My eyes. Why not help anyway and leave the rest to Me, after all it’s why I came in the first place to show you a better way. I didn’t wait for a tragedy I became a tragedy, but this time for a reason and to show you I cared before you had even realised. The original Department for Transport (DfT) commitment was for over 180 additional carriages for Northern and TransPennine Express. Network Rail was required to deliver the infrastructure needed. This included platform lengthening and other track enhancements such as turnbacks to the East of the country. The uncertainty led Leeds and at Horsforth. Qudos Sheds Light at Leeds PhotoLive in August Knog, a design company in Melbourne, gave Covered magazine an exclusive pre-UK release model of qudos, a tiny yet powerful LED light more at home on BMX bikes and surfboards. Photographer Ivor Hughes put it through its paces. At PhotoLive, in August at one of Leeds Met’s exhibition halls, there were sixteen photographic trade stands. Fifteen, good as they were, weren’t offering anything new. Apart from one. Knog, a cutting edge Australian cycle lighting and accessory design company, was using the event to launch qudos in UK. qudos is their tiny LED off-road activities light. Off-road because the concentrated beam is too powerful up close. So the matchbox-sized LED torch is aimed at night time BMX cycling or, waterproof to 40 metres, surfing or scuba diving. Yes, waterproof to 40 metres. LED lighting for video cameras has been around for several years. Small battery powered panels which can be as small as cigarette packets give home video recorders an edge. But they’ve never been a lot of use to stills cameras. They’re flimsy, can’t stand rain and, although the continuous light is quite strong, they are nowhere near the power of the split-second pulse of light sent out by powerful flashguns. For photographers, qudos is a move in their direction. It’s tiny, robust, waterproof and can be set to two different power levels on three focus settings. Though not quite as powerful as small

LED panels, that ability to focus can deliver more light where it is needed. The Li Po (lithium polymer) battery, the size of a sugar cube, powers it for up to four hours. While it is never going to be a substitute for studio or flash lights, it is an exceptionally portable and robust source of side or back lighting for out-of-studio portraits, even underwater. And it’s cheap. Out anytime now, it is expected to retail at around £90 – one quarter of the cost of

I’m more of a press photographer than studio, so I’ve now passed Covered’s qudos onto Leeds Photographic Society for their members to put it through every test imaginable. I also put Knog in touch with John Denton, one of the country’s top on-location fashion photographers and Leeds Flash Centre, who supply every means of photo and video lighting known. I’ll let you have their verdict in months to come. In the meantime, take a look at the comparative pics. Released onto the Australian and US markets, the qudos should be arriving in UK cycle stores and camera shops anytime now. Definitely worth a look.

20 Places of Interest

The Corn Exchange As Nexus Arts Festival launches at the Corn Exchange in Leeds, it’s a far cry from the building’s beginnings when the doors first opened in 1864. This Victorian Grade 1 listed building has suffered a turbulent few years, but remains one of the few corn exchanges still used for trading, though the corn may be gone and is replaced by boutique shopping, dining and cultural events. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick, the Hull architect who also designed Leeds Town Hall, this iconic landmark sits on the junction of Boar Lane and Vicar Lane and began life as an exchange hall for merchants and farmers to buy and sell grain. Modelled on the Halle au Blé in Paris, and costing a total of £30,000 to complete, the hall elevated Leeds’ standing in the grain industry and business flourished throughout the 19th century. Grain was being imported in vast quantities from North America and Europe and Leeds already had a well established travel network. The

surrounding area, along the River Aire, became dominated by flour mills and from 1903 the Corn Exchange was also used as a leather market. Business continued to do well until the 1980s when few traders remained. At this time Leeds Civic Trust proposed to regenerate the building and turn it into a concert hall similar to the Royal Albert Hall in London but, in 1985, Speciality Shops won the contract to redevelop the Corn Exchange and turn it into a bespoke shopping centre and it was at this time that a large opening was cut into the trading floor, creating

the lower balcony we see today. Staircases were added to allow access to the basement level below. The Corn Exchange re-opened in 1990 and any remaining corn traders were permitted to remain trading on Tuesdays, as they had done for many years. This continued until 1994 when corn trading ceased

after a total of 131 years in the building. By this time, many of the surrounding buildings had been restored and the area is now known as the Exchange Quarter. A further restoration in 2007 saw the hall converted into a food emporium and the ground level

occupied by Anthonyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s until itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recent closure. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s back to independent retailers selling gifts and clothing whilst the venue launches regular events such as food festivals, craft markets and the new Nexus Arts Festival which showcased the work of seven emerging artists, who combined their various disciplines for the event. Nexus is about bringing art, music and performance into popular spaces and the Corn Exchange was brought to life by a vibrant mix of comedy, dance and music alongside the art work on display and provided creative artists with a new platform. Festival Director, Stephanie Upsall, feels that creative events should be open and assessable for all to experience and Nexus is about bringing hidden communities to the forefront to be enjoyed by everyone and not regarded as expensive or elitist. Bramhope Tunnel – The Navvies’ Memorial in Otley The navvies’ memorial in Otley Parish Church is a scaled replica of the north portal of Bramhope Tunnel, Grade II listed.

Bramhope Tunnel, a little over two miles in length, is one of the longest rail tunnels in Britain and has for almost two centuries been a crucial component of the Leeds to Harrogate rail network – now taking in Burley Park, Headingley and Horsforth. Constructed between 1845 and 1849, the project followed an all too familiar path. Originally forecast costs of £800,000 escalated to over £2 million. It also claimed the lives of twentyfour men – the Channel Tunnel, immense by comparison, claimed ten.

The need for tunnels and bridges was and is far greater for trains than for cars. Viewers of the Tour de France, and more recently Spain, will have noticed that cyclists and support vehicles regularly negotiate gradients of 1 in 10 and greater. But locomotives just don’t have the same power-to-weight ratio and burnished steel on steel has nothing like the traction of rubber on tarmac. So they can’t go up and down the same hills. The very steepest rail gradient in UK is 1 in 34 (near Birmingham), where goods trains often need assistance from other locomotives. Even today.

Again, by way of example, the Channel Tunnel is only 1 in 90 at its steepest point. Bramhope Tunnel slopes at 1 in 94. Over 2000 men and 400 horses dug and blasted out the tunnel. Accidents were so frequent that LGI dedicated a specially sprung cart to ferry the injured to hospital. The memorial to 23 of the 24 casualties stands in Otley Parish Church Cemetery. The All New Soul I have always been a fan of quirky cars and when Kia launched the first generation Soul in 2008 it really caught my eye. So when Kia chose Leeds to launch the second generation Kia Soul to the UK press earlier this year I jumped at the chance of being there. The task was simple, to drive from York Place to Bolton Abbey and back in the morning in the diesel model and then change to the petrol variant for a circuit of Leeds in the afternoon. It was immediately evident that the new soul is leaps and bounds ahead of the car it replaces largely thanks to a new Cee’d derived chassis and vastly improved interior. The 126bhp 1.6litre diesel wasn’t the smoothest I have driven but it was far from the worst. Kia expect the diesel to account for 70% of sales. The new suspension set up coped equally well in the city as on some of the faster roads heading out town. The inevitable road noise that comes with a box-shaped car was noticeable but not overly intrusive. Soft touch materials in this Connect

Plus model coupled with a wellplanned layout meant the interior was a pleasant place to be. A touchscreen stereo with reversing camera is standard on Connect and Connect Plus models but even the basic Start model gets a DAB stereo. Connect and Connect Plus models also get a smattering of leather touches around the cabin, Bluetooth and exterior features such as alloy wheels and front fog lights. After returning to Leeds and a spot of lunch it was time to jump into the lower spec Start model. The base model lacks some of the plush finishes and feels drab compared to the Connect Plus. The 130bhp 1.6 GDi petrol engine powering this car was perfectly adequate although the decreased torque compared to the diesel means more gear changes were needed. Luckily the 6-Speed manual gearbox fitted as standard to all Soul models is reasonably easy to use if not as sharp as some of the more established brands. A quick stop at the Owlcotes centre gave me a chance to gauge the practicalities of the car. The legroom

available to rear seat passengers is almost as good as the headroom offered by the raised roof line. The boot is ample but you do have the large one-piece rear hatch and sizable load lip to get used to if you’re going to use it regularly. With the rear seats folded there is still a slight lip to contend with when sliding in larger items. Currently there is only one petrol and one diesel engine to choose from but there will soon be an electric variant. CO2 emissions for both engines are high and the emissions are not as good as others in this market leading to high running costs which will put some off. Business users will be put off by 2427% Benefit in Kind (BIK) tax levels. The new Soul is a massive improvement on the previous version. It is now a genuinely competent car and one which is worth considering if you’re in the market for a small SUV. Councillors Comments: Paul Wadsworth I am pleased to see that work has started on the new wheelchair and pram friendly paths in Nunroyd Park. I was contacted by many disabled residents and families who felt that there were not enough wheel friendly paths in the park. This month I have spent a significant amount of time looking at the World War 1 commemorative Garden Project. I am the chair of the sub group for the Commemorative garden for Aireborough. The consultation on the location of the garden within Nunroyd Park is now in progress, the details of which are on the Leeds City Council consultation website (www. leeds.gov.uk/consultaion). There will also be

some information available in the local library. I would urge people to respond so that we get the location right. Once we have the location we intend to run a competition for young people to design the Garden. We hope that this will get young people involved with the Garden and ensure that our young people are aware of the reasons behind the implementation of the tribute. To fund the garden we hope to raise money through sponsorship and events such as concerts and performances. We hope that the garden will be ready to open in 2018. Last month in this magazine we covered the Green Environment and Heritage issues (see wwww. adelneighbourhoodforum.co.uk/news). This month we look at the community needs in the area. Our vision is to ensure Adel is a healthy, vibrant, safe and caring community.

There are no public transport links from the north eastern side of Adel to the facilities at Holt Park such as the new Health and Well-Being Centre, Asda Superstore and two GP surgeries. This puts elderly residents without access to private transport at a serious disadvantage.

Building on a consultation event held last year some of the issues identified are;

Gardening is popular in Adel with a successful Horticultural Society and the nationally recognised York Gate on our doorstep. A demand for allotment provision has been identified in public consultation but the scale of demand has not been tested and no ready source of land has yet been identified or made available.

The need for children’s play provision. The absence of a community centre for all ages. The need for additional GP health provision. Transport Links across Adel to gain access to Holt Park facilities. Gardening Allotments in the area.

Parents want to see more play facilities within easy reach but problems have been identified in the shortage of public space and private space available. One option being suggested by the Council is for a play area being located at Golden Acre Park which Leeds City Council would part fund. There is a need for more community activities for different age groups and discussions will take place with existing providers on the demands for these new services and the opening hours required. Residents have identified there is a capacity issue

The introduction of the Community Infrastructure Levy on Developers may well help the Forum achieve some of those community facilities stated above. GREG MULHOLLAND MP: RUGBY I am an avid follower of rugby league, and earlier this year I was thrilled to be selected as the first sitting MP to play Rugby League for my country, in a Masters match against Australia. It was a fantastic day that I will always remember and particularly special for happening this year, when celebrations are taking place across Leeds to commemorate 150 years of Rugby in the city. Since 1864 Rugby has played an important role in the development of the city and its suburbs, and has provided benefits to people of all ages in Leeds. As Vice President of the Leeds Rugby Foundation, the official charity of Leeds Rhinos, I have seen how rugby helps promote health and fitness and delivers fantastic community projects locally. Leeds Rugby Foundation runs a range of local projects on its three themes of sport, health and education. It works with primary and secondary schools, amateur clubs and holiday rugby camps for children and adults and is able to engage with some of the most disadvantaged and socially excluded young people in the city. Their work involves more children in sport, not just rugby but also dance classes, as well as promoting healthy lifestyles and helping them make informed life choices. They also provide people of all abilities with a chance to shine through their tailored programs. Leeds Rhinos captain Kevin Sinfield was just last month appointed MBE for his services to Rugby League and his work with the Leeds Rugby Foundation, both roles he has carried out with great distinction, and it was particularly pleasing to see him lead the team to victory in the Challenge Cup

Rugby League across the country is also doing a great deal to raise awareness of mental health problems through its State of Mind initiative. Recent fixtures have been used to highlight the sterling work that has been taking place with players, in the wider game and in its communities. National bone cancer charity wants you at Horsforth HQ Horsforth is home to a national charity which needs your help to make a real difference to everyone affected by primary bone cancer. Bone Cancer Research Trust, based off Town Street, is looking for people to join its army of volunteers to help raise awareness about this cruel and devastating disease. Every year in the UK and Ireland 600 people will be diagnosed and yet only half will survive, which is why funding research is crucial to change survival rates, which have not improved in more than 25 years. Ann Young (pictured) was inspired to join BCRT’s volunteering team after losing her husband to primary bone cancer. She told Covered: “I like coming to BCRT every week – not only because it feels good to be able to help this brilliant cause, but also because of the friendly staff working here. I would recommend volunteering for BCRT to everyone who would like to get some experience in fundraising or administration and have fun while doing so.” BCRT holds an annual Bake It For Bone Cancer event during

News from Horsforth Bridge Open Again Town Council After Facelift The Horsforth Neighbourhood Plan Working Group (NPWG) has placed the 900 responses, from the consultation run during July, in the hands of two honours degree graduates from Leeds Trinity University for analysis. Their job is to input the raw data from the questionnaires that Martin Hughes, Chairman, were returned, and Horsforth Town Council provide the Council with analysis and summary of the results. This work should be completed by the end of September. The information from this will guide the development of the final Neighbourhood Plan for Horsforth. The NPWG is also required to consult with local businesses. It has been a task to assemble business names and addresses from the very many business organisations that are listed in Horsforth. However, sorting through the information has resulted in a list of 1410 LS18-based businesses that we plan to write to, to get their opinions on local planning. Again we have asked Trinity University to help us with this work. You will be interested to know that there are about 270 shop fronts on Town Street, New Road Side and Station Road. So there are many other businesses off our main shopping areas. Christmas is coming! – and with that in mind the Council is planning the Christmas light switch-on event, which is to be on 6th December at 15:30 hours. It’ll be a busy day for the town, as there is also a Farmer’s Market on the same day. Arrangements for Christmas lights were made many months ago with Leeds City Council, but we have delayed the choice and positioning of Christmas trees, hoping to increase the number to at least 2 and to make the trees more impressive. Certainly there will be one on The Green, and we’d like to reinstate the one that was placed on New Road Side.

The Bridge Inn on Horsforth’s Low Lane officially reopened on Friday evening 12 September and was an instant hit with the hundreds of guests invited to see the results of the three and a half weeks total refurbishment. Bob the bassett hound was wondering what all the fuss was about though was quite at home on the new carpet.

Amnesty International UK – recruitment drive for local groups AIUK has 200 000 members nationally, but only 6000 (3%) are signed up to their local group. You might think, well, I pay a subscription, I read the magazine, I write a few letters, so why join the local group? Basically, AI is like any other group with a shared goal, be it losing weight, improving photographic skills or whatever. Better motivation, feeling part of a bigger picture, reaching a deeper understanding of issues and – crucial to AI activities – helping out with fund-raising. In a drive to increase numbers, various events are scheduled nationwide. In Yorkshire, the first is a conference to discuss Amnesty’s strategic goals and their access via Skype or other technology. This will be on Saturday 4 October in room AEW/104 in Alcuin East Wing at York University, from 11am until early afternoon. The event is entirely free, being funded by AIUK in London. Coffee and tea will be provided but participants are invited to bring their own lunch.

Adel Beer Festival – and Adel Players This year’s Adel Beer Festival (29 to 31 August) included a family fun and awareness day on the Sunday. Apart from the music, burgers and bouncy castle, numerous of the sports clubs based at Adel Memorial Sports Ground offered taster sessions aimed mainly at recruiting youngsters. Some social groups were also plugging their own societies and activities, notably Adel Players who were promoting their next production Rutherford and Son. Written in 1912, the play relates the difficult relationship between Rutherford, a glassmaking captain (and extreme capitalist) of industry and his son and heir John. And the rest of the family. Acclaimed at the time, it fell out of production for many years. But in 1998 it was acclaimed by the National Theatre as being one of the best 100 of the 20th century. Better Fortunes for Cookridge Fire Station Open Day Each year Cookridge Fire Station holds an open day. The purpose of the established and popular event is four fold. First, the station opens its doors to the general public and, along with other emergency services, gets to meet the community it serves. Secondly, each of the emergency services carries important health and safety warnings. Then there’s fundraising for local and fire fighters’ charities and, of course, the family fun aspect. Last year the day was severely curtailed by poor weather. They were packing up when we arrived mid-day. But this year the sunnier event proved so popular that they actually ran out of food half way through and had to send out an emergency call themselves for more burgers, sausages and buns. The event raised £1737.00 on the day, divided among three charities.

When most people think of being active and getting fit they think of throwing weights around in the gym and sampling the latest muscle building supplements but that is not for everyone, so if you want to get fit at a steady pace and see some of Yorkshire’s most beautiful natural sights in the process why not try… walking. You did read that right, walking. It may not give you huge muscles or allow you to run marathons but it is a great, free and easy way to look, feel and be healthier. All you need is a comfy pair of shoes, a bottle of water and yourself and you’re ready to go. The NHS says that regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, strokes and some cancers. Start of light and go on short walks before you tackle mountains and also invest in a pedometer to see how many steps you are doing each day and monitor your improvement.

Getting to a local legs bums and tums class is not easy for everyone but walking is available whenever you’re free and will help you to tone the same muscles. If you walk up hills and focus on your posture not only are your legs going to become more and more defined but your abs will also start to tone up. There are many health benefits to walking but there can also be social benefits, as walking in a group will help to make friends and spur you on if your stamina begins to run out. Living in this part of the world has its benefits and one of these is the amazing views that can be enjoyed, you just need to know where they are and be willing to walk to get to them. There are many local walking groups to get involved with including the Horsforth Healthy Walking Group who set off from Morrisons on Town Street every Wednesday at 10am. They also go on longer, more challenging walks once a month

on a Thursday. The Holt Park Walking Group walk from the Holt Park District Centre ASDA every Tuesday morning at 10.30am for short, gentle walks around North West Leeds. Keith Balfour, one of Trinity Fitness’ Duty Managers, runs a walking club that focuses on walking in a friendly group and seeing some of Yorkshire’s best natural views. So far Trinity Walks have walked around Ilkley Moor, The Cavendish at Bolton Abbey to the aqueduct along the River Wharfe, the Ingleton Waterfall Trail and around the Yorkshire Dales. Winter Visitors

Stand outside your house on a clear cold October night and listen carefully, and you may hear the distant “seep” sounds that are the contact calls of flocks of redwings, flying unseen high above, as they escape the snow and ice of the far north to winter in the UK. A member of the thrush family, the redwing is named for the orangered patch beneath its wing, and nearly 700,000 birds arrive here in the autumn. Watch out for them on berry bushes and rowan trees – they are smaller than our native thrushes, and tend to flit about in a nervous manner.

Also arriving soon from the north are fieldfares, again a thrush, but large and colourful, roaming the countryside in noisy flocks and feeding on insects, worms and berries. Both these birds will visit gardens, especially in freezing weather, so keep an eye out for them. Perhaps the most exotic and visible of the winter visitors are the

waxwings, whose arrival depends largely on the availability of food in their native Scandinavia. For this reason, they can arrive much later or even not at all in some years. They are a striking reddishbrown bird, starling-sized, with a prominent crest, black throat and yellow-tipped wings and tail. They are mostly seen in flocks from a half dozen to hundreds, and have a lovely

Jeevan Looking over His Shoulder Last month we reported how eight-years-old Jeevan of Leeds Golf Centre was heading to St Andrews in Scotland to represent West Yorkshire in the Wee Wonders age-grouped national golf championships. It wasn’t to be. On the day, a nonetheless creditable 111 (over 27 holes) earned him a mid-table 20th place. According to granddad Jaspal, pictured here with Jeevan, an even younger grandson is showing equal potential – Jeevan’s two-years-old brother is already demonstrating the perfect golf swing. With the annual tournament broken into four age groups between 5 and 12, Jaspal might be finding himself in Scotland every August for the next ten years ...

The Maxwell Brothers in WWI – update Last month we underlined the difficulties faced by people researching ancestors’ whereabouts during WWI, whether for personal reasons or for one of the many parish projects funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The example we gave was this image held on Leeds CC’s Leodis online pictures archive - the details given didn’t tally with those held on ancestry.co.uk, CWGC records or the regimental monument in Canterbury Cathedral (all online). Leodis has confirmed and is correcting the error. As a result of that article, we received a letter from Cynthia Ruston, who with the help of HLF, is researching all forty-eight Meanwood men commemorated on her local war memorial. Cynthia’s letter included a message supporting the article; “It’s a case of check, double check and go back and check again.” Another reader, Anthony Child, also wrote in. Although he also finds National Archives records a valuable research resource, he had found and reported similar errors in the case of two members of his own family. By coincidence, on a past visit to Meanwood Memorial, he had noticed the date of Arthur Maxwell’s death being the very next day (30 August). Accordingly, he laid a few flowers as a tribute - and recently laid a poppy cross for both brothers at a service commemorating the outbreak of the First Battle of the Somme.

Arthur Maxwell, from Meanwood, was killed on 30 August 1914, shortly after the outbreak of WWI. His brother William, also with 9th Lancers, died on 11 May 1915. The work and sentiments of people like Cynthia Ruston and Anthony Child has brought and will keep awareness of all such sacrifices into today’s communities.

Monday 1st November - Weds 12th November a self-guided walk from the Old Ball roundabout to Horsforth Cemetery on Calverley Lane, going past 20 information boards that link WWI people and events to buildings. 8th and 9th November: Exhibition at St Margaret’s Hall: Saturday 10:00am4:00pm / Sunday 11:00am-4:00pm The Sunday coincides with Remembrance Sunday. The Parade that day starts at 10:15am at the Broadgate end of Stanhope Drive and will stop at the boulder stone for a re-dedication of the 201 memorial trees and the unveiling of two lecterns. The Cenotaph service to take place at 11:00am. Tuesday 11th November - Armistice Day A very short service at 11:00am followed by the placing of poppies on the WWI and WWII memorials by pupils of local school.
