John Burland Ivor Hughes Thom Dent Dawn Kilner Judith Dunn Luke Shepherd Eric Wells Hello and welcome to this month’s Covered – the magazine for the Leeds suburbs. You may have noticed that we’ve increased our distribution…. again! We deliver to more properties in the LS postcodes than any other publication but there are still thousands that we’re unable to reach - our distribution team’s little legs will only go so fast. I’m often asked where people can pick up a copy and I usually point them in the direction of the local libraries, post offices, pubs and bars. That’s about to change as we will now have additional pick up points situated in high footfall supermarkets and convenience stores – you’ll start noticing these over the coming weeks and months. Rather than reduce our door-to-door distribution and see regular recipients miss out, I decided to increase our print run to ensure that we can reach thousands of new readers too. My accountant will be livid but the many community organisations and businesses that rely on Covered to spread their message will benefit tremendously, and that’s what this magazine is all about. I hope you enjoy reading another packed edition. As always, I’m keen to hear your thoughts about Covered so please do drop me a line with any feedback. The deadline for editorial submissions and listings in our Really Useful Guide is 16/05/14. The advertising deadline is 22/05/14. Until next month,

Crag House Farm Crag House Farm has been the home of Leeds based charity ‘Caring For Life’ for the last 27 years and is situated on 125 acres of land between Cookridge and Bramhope, offering beautiful views and walks across the surrounding valleys and fields. The charity provides care and support to some of the area’s homeless and most vulnerable people. In addition to housing people, Caring For Life offer constructive activities and work experience to help people start life over again. A free breakfast and lunch are also provided for all who attend the farm projects in addition to handing out food parcels to those in need. Unfortunately, cuts in government funding meant that Caring For Life had to look at alternative ways of raising much needed money to support the charity. Major sources of income are now generated from the Granary Restaurant and Farm Shop, with neighbouring plant nurseries.

The Granary Restaurant is housed in a 17th century barn conversion, which was an award winner at the 2013 Leeds Architecture Awards, and offers a calm and welcoming place to enjoy a drink, tasty lunch or afternoon tea. Also licensed and open for evening dining, all food is freshly prepared on site by the team of chefs, using as many products as possible from the farm itself. Crag Hall Farm rear their own Longhorn cattle and White Faced Woodland sheep, as well as having around 200 free range chickens, and make their own sausages as well as a range of jams and sauces. Many of the herbs and vegetables used are also grown on site and other ingredients will be sourced locally, wherever possible. Head chef, Pete Washburn, came from America to volunteer at Crag Hall around 3 years ago and loved it so much that he never went back. Now, very much part of the family here, Pete describes his regular working day with so much enthusiasm that it’s clear to see why he stayed. Darren Percival is hospitality manager and previously worked at Harvey Nichols before joining the team at Crag Hall Farm. He explains how everyone is equally welcome

in the restaurant, whether it’s just for a drink or for a full meal. Monthly theme nights are popular and include a steak night, curry night and a jazz evening. During lunchtimes, volunteer pianists play for diners on a grand piano tucked away in the corner and private parties can also be catered for. A fantastic range of breakfasts is available from 9am until 11.30am and offers Crag House Farm sausages, eggs Florentine and smoked kippers amongst other dishes. A selection of meals, sandwiches and snacks are then available

until 5pm, offering salads, pies and casseroles before the evening menu begins at 5pm. Popular choices are the Crag Hall Farm steaks, with signature hand-cut chips, but there’s a good range to cater for most people’s tastes, from garden pea, asparagus and lemon risotto to salmon fillet or double beef burger. Starters vary from bacon and cheese croquettes to a refreshing a orange, fennel and onion salad. And, if you still have room for dessert, there’s a tempting mix of rice pudding, cheesecake and sorbets on offer.

And you can purchase some of Crag Hall Farm’s products in the farm shop and try them at home for yourself. Also available to buy are a range of gifts and woodcrafts made in the neighbouring workshops. A wooden crook used by the Bishop of Wakefield was even made here. The nurseries were new in 2013 and also offer a valuable source of revenue and were started with orchids which were donated by generous sponsors to Caring For Life. w w w. c a r i n g f o r l i f e . c o . u k / granary/granaryrestaurant

Covered ORANGE, FENNEL AND RED ONION SALAD WITH WATERCRESS Serves 2

cookbook

1 Orange, segmented and juiced, small bunch of red onion slices, 1 fennel bulb, trimmed and cored, thinly sliced lengthways, salt and pepper to taste, 1tbs olive oil, 2 handfuls of watercress

Start by mixing all the ingredients, except the watercress. On each plate lay a bed of watercress and simply arrange the mix on top of the watercress. Works well, if drizzled with a little balsamic glaze.

COOKING THE PERFECT STEAK

Buy good quality Beef – obviously, we recommend the steak from Crag House Farm. Long horn is one of the best meats for steak!

LIME AND ELDERFLOWER CHEESECAKE

200g digestive biscuits, 100g unsalted butter, melted, 500g full fat cream cheese, 200g caster sugar, 2 limes zested and juiced, 50ml elderflower cordial, 150ml double cream

Serves 6

Fillet, Rib-eye, Rump, Sirloin? Choose steak that suits you! If you don’t like fat, try steaks that are very marbled or extremely lean, but don’t overcook these. If you prefer a great flavour, it comes from the fat; choose pieces that have a piece lining at the side, it doesn’t have to be eaten, but it flavours it wonderfully whilst it’s cooking. Start with an extremely hot pan. Have your fan already going and the window open. Season generously as salt helps to bring out the flavour of the meat. Let the meat Rest, Rest, Rest! Cook it until just under how you like it and then set aside and let it rest for at least as long as you cooked it. Then flash it in the pan before eating.

Start by lining a 9 inch springform tin with clingfilm. Crush or pulverize your digestives and mix with the melted butter, and push into the base of your tin. Put into the freezer to chill whilst you’re making the filling. Cream the cream cheese, sugar, and lime zest until fluffy. Carefully mix in your liquids, the lime juice and cordial, until incorporated. In a separate bowl, whip the double cream until very stiff, this is what helps it to set, then fold into the cream cheese mixture. Take your tin out of the freezer and fill. Smooth the filling out and wrap the cling fill over. Let it set in the fridge overnight, serve with a berry coulis and freshly zested lime over it, and enjoy!

Farsley Farmers’ Market Completes the Calendar Farsley Farmers’ Market got off to a flying start on Saturday 25 March in St John’s Church car park. Hosted by vicar Paul Tudge and Farsley Community Initiative, and supported by local councillors, the monthly market is scheduled to run on the fourth Saturday of each month – complementing the other farmers’ markets at Horsforth (first Saturday), Bramhope (second), and Oakwood (third). The inaugural market offered much more than local produce. The church hall included a book sale, café, craft stands and face painting. Outside, the church’s own stone wood-burning pizza oven was cooking samples of the café’s own freshly made and hand stretched pizzas – they were delicious. Many of the local shops supported the event by showing posters and offering 5% and 10% discounts on the day. Another bonus sideshow was a performance by the Farsley Farfield Primary School Choir. Who knows what additional attractions the market will have at the next event on 26 April? Enquiries to Paul Tudge on 07872 553633. Farsley man Samuel Marsden exported the very first sheep to Australia. In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of his birth, a large flock of knitted sheep and lambs was distributed among shops in Farsley for a local spotting competition.

Farsley Farfield Primary School Choir made a welcome appearance

Howard Sway was in charge of the church’s pizza oven – which is available for hire for garden parties or events in the church hall. Howard is also involved in the organisation of Farsley Festival (26 May).

Buying Fresh and Local One of the most popular stands at Farsley Farmers’ Market was Leeds Bread Co-Op. Without fixed shop premises, their trade is wholesale and at local produce markets such as Kirkstall Deli Market, Baildon, Horsforth and Oakwood. Their entire range of breads, maybe a dozen on the day, is a culinary work of art. Perhaps the most unusual were these New York deli breads – with 20% rye flour and caraway seeds.

recipe time

Rye bread is the base of the famous toasted Reuben Sandwich – for which there is, unfortunately, no definitive recipe. In fact, culinary

historians can’t agree on which Reuben first created it – though it was Arnold Reuben of Reuben’s Delicatessen in New York who made it famous among the theatres on Broadway as early as 1926. Nonetheless, the rye bread remains

constant. Here’s the most recognised version – though there’s no reason why you, like others, shouldn’t vary the ingredients. Substituting pastrami, Dijon mustard or coleslaw are popular variations – but always on rye bread.

Reuben Sandwich

(main meal or starter snack for two) Butter two slices of rye bread and place them buttered side down. Sprinkle one side with Russian dressing (mayonnaise and ketchup) or similar. Build the sandwich on top of the dressing with corned beef, sauerkraut, thin slices of Emmenthal cheese and more dressing. Feel free to add your own favourite pickles such as capers or gherkins. Add the second slice butter up. Grill or sauté for around three minutes on each side, until the cheese is melting. Perhaps an ideal candidate for a toasted sandwich maker or George Foreman grill?

The Tetley

It’s hard to believe that the magnificent art deco Tetley headquarters, built in 1931, isn’t a listed building. Such a fundamental part of Leeds’ industrial and social history, Tetley’s Brewery was founded by Joshua Tetley in 1822 and grew to be the largest brewery in the North of England, before Carlsberg took over in 1998. The Leeds brewery site closed in 2011

and was largely demolished. We can be thankful then that Pippa Hale and Kerry Harker saw the beauty in this building and how it would fit with their vision for the future. The recent transformation is down to the directors and cofounders of Project Space Leeds, a charity established to showcase new and emerging artistic

talent, and previously located at Whitehall Waterfront. Kerry and Pippa are themselves both graduates of Leeds University and were drawn to the character and architecture of the Tetley building. Now a centre for contemporary arts and learning, the heritage of the building has been beautifully preserved, and demonstrates a careful blend of old and new. Entering through the original wood and glass revolving doors you arrive into the reception area where the original war memorials still stand, commemorating the loss of 261 Tetley employees, including Isaac Tetley, during both world wars. Oak panelling remains throughout and the boardroom is kept intact, complete with portraits of the Tetley elite still gracing the walls. The original art deco lift has been decommissioned but still provides an interesting feature, and the second floor atrium has been

opened up to provide a light, airy exhibition space over which the stunning period glass roof sits. The Bar and Kitchen centres around community, with profits going directly to support the artistic and educational programming held at the venue. Here you’ll find a range of good quality food and drink in a relaxed environment. The menu is wholesome and Yorkshireinspired, using locally sourced produce as much as possible and, of course, you’ll be able to enjoy a fine pint of Tetley’s whilst soaking up the atmosphere. The furniture in the bar is largely recycled from the old headquarters and you’ll find tables fashioned from old workstations and magnificent iron pillars. Children are welcome and have a special menu, which includes picnics. This is now very much a building

where all of the family can come and education is a key factor at The Tetley, with school groups welcomed and regular Springboard Saturday family events. Easter promises “fun for the young at heart of all ages” with a plethora of activities lined up including animated films, robot making and letterpress printing, not to mention the Easter egg hunt and opening of the outdoor dining terrace and new green space, which will encourage the continued regeneration of Leeds south bank. The renaissance of this building continues with the Tetley archive still being sifted through but, in the meantime, it’s good to see that the illuminated sign upon the roof still beams out across the city “The Home of Tetley’s Established 1822.” www.thetetley.org

Exploring Leeds More Owls to find Our walk this month looking at the various Owls to be found on buildings in the centre of Leeds concentrates on the area south of The Headrow. We commence the walk on Infirmary Street at the old Yorkshire Bank premises where stone owls can be seen on the buttresses and spires. Moving to the adjacent street of Quebec Street, there is an owl in the glass in Quebec’s Hotel, formerly the Leeds and County Liberal Club, which was built in 1890. Around the corner on King Street, on another hotel the Met Hotel (formerly the Hotel Metropole), which was built in the same decade in 1898, are a pair of owls on the Victorian terracotta facade. From here turn left onto Wellington Street. We now head off across City Square (no owls to be seen on the statues – only pigeons) to the corner of Bishopsgate Street where on the old Midland Bank premises – now Flares nightclub – owls can be seen above the doorway. Heading down Boar Lane, on your right a stone owl can be seen on The Bourse building. Over the road is the new Trinity shopping centre - the owl here is like a gem, brightly gold and silver. Turn left at the lights and head off up Briggate back towards The Headrow. Halfway up the street on the right is the Yorkshire Bank on Kirkgate where two owls

are carved in wood with YPB (Yorkshire Penny Bank) on the shield between them. Continue down Kirkgate and cross over the road to Kirkgate Market, 110 years old this year and designed by Leeming and Leeming. In here the pairs of owls can be found in circles on the green and gold ironwork. We now cross over from the market heading back slightly towards Boar Lane to one of the jewels of Leeds’s architecture. I mentioned in the last article about Cuthbert Broderick who designed many fine buildings in the city, and the Corn Exchange, built in the 1860’s, is possibly his greatest

Head back towards the market and down Kirkgate to reach the Leeds Minster (formerly Leeds Parish Church before its recent upgrade in status in 2012) where a couple of sets of owls can be found, both in plaques with a fleece in the middle. The one illustrated is that on the end of one of the sets of pews. The building itself is dedicated to Saint Peter. An early 7th-century church on this site was burned down in 633 AD. A church at “Ledes” is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The church was subsequently rebuilt twice, after a fire in the 14th century, and again in the 19th century. Walter Farquhar Hook, Vicar of Leeds from 1837 until preferment as Dean of Chichester in 1859, was responsible for the construction of the present building, and of the revitalising of the Anglican Church throughout Leeds as a whole. Face back up Kirkgate and turn left onto High Court and The Calls. On your right you will see Wharf Street and above the door of the

Leeds Civic Trust building on the right an owl can be spotted in the glass. Continue along The Calls into Call Lane and then turn left onto Bridge End where you will reach Leeds Bridge. The present cast iron road bridge dates from 1730 and is Grade II listed. A wool cloth market operated at Leeds Bridge, becoming the centre of wool trade for the West Riding of Yorkshire in the late 17th century. The bridge was rebuilt in 1870-73 by W. H. Barlow to a design by T. Dyne Steel. The iron was cast by John Butler of Stanningley. The cast iron balustrade is of rings and flowers. The east side bears the arms of the Corporation of Leeds where we will see our crowned owls and a fleece. Our final owl on this month’s tour can be found by going back from the bridge onto Call Lane and then heading up Swinegate

to the Malmaison Hotel, now in the building formerly occupied by Leeds City Tramways Department, which opened in 1915. The pair of owls can be seen in the plaque above the doorway. From here continue along Swinegate to return you back to City Square.

So ends our second visit round the centre of Leeds looking at the owls which appear on the arms of this fine city. For more information, education and inspiration, and to view a Leeds Owl Trail map visit: www.leedsowltrail.com

22 Blast from the Past

Leeds - Armsless since 1974? Inspired by the owls theme of our Exploring Leeds series of city centre walks, we thought we’d dig a little deeper into the history of the coat of arms used by the City of Leeds which, as we all know, incorporates three owls. Walk by any civic building and you can’t avoid the little critters. Our research remained routine until regular Covered contributor Ivor Hughes unwittingly ruffled a few of the owls’ feathers in LCC’s Legal Services Department. But the routine stuff first ... In 1600 and with a population of around 3000, Leeds was a relatively small and insignificant town. But rapid growth in the wool trade doubled the population within fifty years. Though it wasn’t until 1654 that Leeds returned its very first member of parliament, whereas the neighbouring town of Otley had long had two. Then it was granted its first mayor in 1662, upon the restoration of the monarchy. Leeds’ first coat of arms also dates from 1662. It was a shield, incorporating the three stars from the arms of Sir Thomas Danby, the first Mayor. A fleece was added to show the town’s industrial base. The owls, added in 1835, were taken from the arms of Leeds’ first alderman, Sir John Savile – something of an afterthought as Sir John was appointed in 1626. Curiously, that coat of arms remained unregistered with the College of Arms until 7 November 1921, and then only after Alderman Sir Charles Wilson MP expressed concerns about its legality and therefore protected status. Now for the ruffled feathers ... The Local Government Act, which came into force in 1974, redefined counties, boroughs and districts. It created new ones, renamed others and in some cases re-drew their borders. One administrative consequence for those new metropolitan boroughs which kept existing coats of arms (eg Leeds) was that they had to apply for them to be transferred to their new identity – or did they? While researching the history of Leeds’ present coat of arms, Covered spoke with William Hunt, an officer at the College of Arms in London. Previously a Portcullis Pursuivant of Arms in Ordinary, he was appointed Windsor Herald of Arms in Ordinary in 1999 and in 2007 took the additional office of Registrar. Mr Hunt was extremely helpful and informative and told Covered “The transfer of coats of arms in 1974 was straightforward. Applications were made for them to be transferred by Orders in Council [a legal process] and, as I recall, those

An early example of the city’s coat of arms, not properly registered until 1921. Did that registration lapse in 1974, or was the new metropolitan borough exempt from re-applying? The ongoing debate between LCC and the College of Arms, London, was prompted by Covered’s own research into their history. We’ll keep you posted. (image LEODIS)

applications were going through en bloc in batches of twenty. But no such application was made by Leeds City Council. Please pass on my email address and I’ll tell them what needs to be done.” Covered then spoke with Forsyth Hill in LCC’s Legal Services Department who, after doing some digging of his own, told us “This question was raised some years ago. Back in 1974 it was the view of Leeds CC that they were exempted from the process by virtue of the fact that the 1921 registration was granted in perpetuity. There was some correspondence between LCC and Mr Hunt’s predecessor as Registrar, the (then) Chester Herald of Arms in Ordinary. We thought we’d got the all clear - but Mr Hunt’s insistence has caused us to take another look. “Any problem may not be that simple to rectify. To apply for registration now would effectively underline and publicise the fact that the city has been without a properly registered and protected coat of arms since 1974. So any transfer would have to be retrospective. Thank you very much for bringing this to our attention – I’ll get back to you with the final answer.”

Hope Pastures Fashion Evening at Weetwood Hall The evening of Friday 28 March saw a charity fashion show with a difference at Weetwood Hall on the north Leeds ring road. Lorraine Esteban of Hope Pastures, a horse and donkey sanctuary, had collaborated with Jane Thompson, owner of Harriet’s of Otley, Hair by Dmand of Adel and some professional and volunteer models to stage a James Bond themed fashion evening. Lorraine also drew in her good friend Claire King (aka Kim Tate of Emmerdale) to help with the raffle. Though the fashion wasn’t all glitter and glamour and included clothes and accessories for all ages from late teens upward. Jane, of Harriet’s, told Covered; “Linen is going to be popular this summer – no surprises there as it so often is. Pastel colours are going to be big too, and the fashion accessories of the moment are statement necklaces.”

The evening’s raffle was accompanied by entertaining banter between Emmerdale’s Claire King and her friend and the event organiser Lorraine Esteban.

Originally the Phyllis Harvey Horse and Donkey Trust and founded forty years ago, the sanctuary was restructured as Hope Pastures ten years ago when the present trustees averted closure. The sanctuary, also on the north Leeds Ring Road, presently houses and cares for thirty animals and has an ongoing responsibility for another eighty rehoused. Although the fashion evening raised in excess of

£1000 and counting, the running costs are around £8000 per month. Donations, support and volunteers are always welcome – hopepastures.org gives comprehensive details of the charity, its work and upcoming events. There is a Spring Fair on Sunday 18 May and a fun dog show on Sunday 22 June. They are also open every day from 103, admission free. Details online or 0113 2614344.

Covered at BBC Radio Leeds When the topic of junk mail came up for Liz Green’s BBC Radio Leeds morning show, the production team got in touch with Covered editor Chris Barnham - not because it ticked that particular box but because one of their researchers was an avid reader and had recently chosen the best of three quotes from advertising window suppliers. In his short slot, Chris was able to assure listeners that Covered is a valuable community resource with a 50/50 balance of advertising and original local content including community and councillors’ news. Yes, advertising was indeed cheaper in Covered than in many other regional media and with 85% of advertisers reporting good returns. Liz; “Still, has anyone ever objected to its delivery?” Chris; “Only one person during the past three years.”

Covered editor Chris Barnham with BBC Radio Leeds’ Liz Green

Liz Green doesn’t take prisoners on her morning show – minutes earlier she had turned the screw on the Tour de France planners and organisers after finding that their £4.5 million services budget was £2.3 million short (barriers, security, medical support etc). Which, perhaps, didn’t leave her enough time to give Chris the same treatment. Or maybe his answers left Liz with nowhere to go?

Adel Neighbourhood Forum: The next steps The Adel Neighbourhood Forum has now received formal designation which means that the specific details of the geographical area to be covered by the Forum has been agreed. It is the first Non-Parish Council in the Leeds City Council area to receive such designation. Supporting Communities in Neighbourhood Planning led by “Locality” has confirmed that the Forum will receive advice and a grant to purchase Assessments on key issues such as highways, the environment and housing needs. These reports will be central to the draft and final Neighbourhood Plan. The next step is to produce a Draft Neighbourhood Plan which will be the subject of a Community Engagement exercise that will enable residents and other interested parties to have their say before the final document is produced.

RAWDON ASSASSIN RETURNS TO WINNING WAYS It has been a good couple of months on the darts circuit for The Assassin from Rawdon, Martin Atkins. There were fears about whether he would be able to return to form after tendonitis forced him to pull out of the second round of the World Championships in January. However, after following doctor’s orders and giving his arm a good rest, he is now back to his old ways, winning the Isle of Man Open Pairs with Allan Edwards followed by the Hal Open Mixed Pairs with Yorkshire teammate Rachel Brooks. There will be on-going communication thanks to this medium, the website www. adelneighbourhoodforum.co.uk , events and working in partnership with other organisations which have an interest in the area. At the same time our six focus groups on Housing, Traffic, Education, Environment, Community services and Business will be finalising their individual reports. A recent meeting took place on the important issue of education. The existing schools are full to capacity and the demand resulting from housing developments cannot be met from the existing primary schools. Leeds Children’s Services Department has asked the Neighbourhood Forum to work with it to arrange an ‘outcomes based’ exercise. If a new school is to be built should the developers pay for it and where is the potential site? Residents feel that if the infrastructure is not in place then the development is not “sustainable” and it should not go ahead. saw the England Internationals arrive at The Venue in Halifax. Martin was in action again along with fellow Yorkies Scott Waites, Jamie Wilson and Garry Thompson. Martin had a tough draw against his good friend Martin Phillips, the Welsh Captain, who he has played six or seven times before and never beaten. On this occasion he held his nerve record a deserved 4-3 win. The 12 man England squad dominated the weekend, beating Wales 11-1 and Scotland 10-2 to retain the trophy.

Meanwhile David Wilson Homes (DWH) and Hallam Land are pressing ahead with their proposal to build 177 homes on the ancient fields on Church Lane opposite Adel Parish Church. In phase one Leeds City Council has now received a planning application for 88 homes on this site on the upper northern field which separates it from the existing site, Centurion Fields on Holt Avenue. The proposed access is off Otley Road. Residents question why the application is being brought at this time when the site allocations have not yet been decided. This year will be critical in terms of future developments and residents’ responses to them. Hate Crime Victim Speaks Out Rebecca Forster of St Margaret’s Avenue, Horsforth, was on the receiving end of a torrent of abuse at the top end of Horsforth Town Street in October. She’d just had a key cut and was waiting for a taxi home – Rebecca has cerebral palsy and walks with a frame. She was stood by one of the disabled parking bays when a non bluebadged motorist parked there. He refused to vacate the designated space and then approached Rebecca and the taxi driver when, mid-road, she was trying to get in. Rebecca told Covered “Both the taxi driver and I felt threatened as the man walked towards us, shouting abuse. He could see my frame and the difficulty I have in walking. Six months later and I still feel uncomfortable around there. His guilty plea saved me from the distress of testifying and I’m grateful for that. But I do

Cookridge Choir Entertains The Community Since news of their fabulous Christmas concerts has spread it has been a busy few months for Cookridge Intergenerational Choir. In recent weeks they have visited St. Paul’s at Ireland Wood, Opal’s coffee afternoon at Tinshill Community Hub and Cookridge Methodist Church. HORSFORTH SCHOOL STUDENTS FAST FOR SETHANI Horsforth School students have been taking part in a sponsored rice fast, in aid of the Sethani Foundation. Pupils who took part were challenged to go 24 hours (from one evening meal to the next) without any food, bar one small bowl of rice served for their lunch. Led by Duncan Stow of the Craig Hill Baptist Church in Horsforth, the school helped to raise money for an upcoming project in South Africa, which will help to build and provide educational facilities for the growing number of children in the country who are otherwise unable to go to school due to them having

Around 120 students took part in the fast, most going without food for a day whilst a handful of the more adventurous attempting two. Duncan however, as the one organising the event, had to go the entire 5-day week without eating between evening meals. Book review – The Monuments: the grit and glory of cycling’s greatest one-day races

fairly bowls along. It is the history of five legendary one-day cycle races, comparable with the grand slam in tennis or the majors in golf. The races in question are the ParisRoubaix (known as the hell of the north on account of the number of cobbles the cyclists jolt over) the MilanSan Remo, the Tour of Flanders, the Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Lombardy. Mostly a century old, these are far less well-known to the general public than the Tour de France, but to cyclists they offer the greatest challenges. The Monuments recounts the struggles, triumphs and disasters and the personal stories of the major competitors over the years and is a must for any enthusiast. It is published by Bloomsbury at £12.99.

Peter Cossins is a writer and journalist and has covered cycling’s major events for a number of years. A modern languages graduate (Spanish and French) and a cycling enthusiast with a way with words, he gave Stephen Roche vital help with his story. This book is what the French would call “un pavé” (a weighty tome, with a nod to one race largely over cobbles – the literal meaning of “pavé”). Yes, it is a big book, but it is an easy read and

GARDENERS BEWARE! Spring has sprung and summer is here prompting many of us to spend long bank holiday weekends in the garden. However be warned – hours of pruning, weeding and digging after a winter of inactivity can lead to a host of injuries. Every year our physio clinic is inundated with bad backs, joint sprains and repetitive strain injuries caused by the first sunny weekend’s gardening marathon.

Tips to keep you injury free in the garden: • Warm up with some gentle stretches, especially for the back. • Take regular breaks and do some stretches before you start again. • Avoid long arduous tasks - you don’t have to mow the entire lawn in one go. • Rotate tasks to avoid repetitive movements - for example mow half the lawn, weed for 15 minutes, then swap to pruning. Have a break and repeat.

• Lift correctly – bend at the knees not the spine, not just for those heavy plant pots but also all the little lifts to pick up tools, trugs, and plants.

• Beware of falling - moss covered paths can be slippery and garden tools left lying about are a trip hazard.

• Kneel don’t bend to weed, but use a kneeling pad to protect the joints.

If the worst does happen and you do end up injured, our physiotherapists at Walnut Tree Physio Centre are here to get you back into the garden as soon as possible!

• Use the correct tool for the job, trying to hack through a tough branch with garden shears could strain your arm joints.

AGENCY UNVEILS ITS OWN ‘FRENCH CONNECTION’ TO YORKSHIRE’S GRAND DEPART For Yorkshire homehunters, the eye-catching way one company is marking the county’s starring role in the Tour de France this summer promises to be the “wheel deal”. For Linley & Simpson, the residential sales and letting agency with a branch network that takes in the routes of Le Grand Depart on July 5 and 6, has launched a limited edition of signboards to celebrate the event. The customised signage, which features a cut-out of the iconic yellow jersey, was unveiled this week at the Cow and Calf Rocks on Ilkley Moor to bring some oohla-la to the Yorkshire landmark ahead of the 100 day countdown to the race start. Between now and the end of the world’s most televised sporting event, the boards will be a common sight outside hundreds of properties for sale and for rent across West and North Yorkshire. As part of their support for the event, Linley & Simpson is offering all new sales and rental clients the chance to win a holiday worth £2,014. The names

of all property owners who instruct the company to sell or rent their home between now and the end of June will be entered into a prize draw. They will be available to clients across all 10 of the independent agency’s offices – Harrogate, Ripon, Wetherby, York, Ilkley, Saltaire, Wakefield, Roundhay, Horsforth and Leeds city centre. Thanks to Linley & Simpson, Station Road, Horsforth

50 Fashion, Hair & Beauty

Fashion – Is There Anything New? Fashionable clothing of the day is often little more than a rework of fads and fashions long passed. Few genuinely new ideas stick. Good examples are Coco Chanel’s LBD (little black dress) of 1926 and Yves St Laurent’s trouser suit for women le smoking of 1966. Some might include Halston’s pillbox hat of the early sixties, immortalised by Jackie Kennedy and sung about by Bob Dylan. But that was a simple variation of much earlier military or social headwear – Afghani tribesmen knew about it long before the west. Valuable sources of research, information and inspiration for today’s designers are fashion catalogues and magazines of yesteryear. Before the digital age, the contents of most were consigned to the archives or bin decades ago. Which is why, and with a little mix and match, some designers are able to come up with “original” outfits that are in effect a collage of fashion through the ages. Was YSL thumbing through a catalogue of 1920s Hollywood lounge suits when

Some of Jean Choiselat’s creations for 1946. The French didn’t suffer the same cloth rationing as we did in UK. Military uniforms have influenced the lines of some of the coats and jackets. There is more than a little Hollywood and English and Scottish country gentry in the coats and suits.

he was inspired to tailor one for women? Berlin, London, Milan, New York and Paris all lay claim to the title of fashion capital of the world – New York has been crowned just that in 2014. But Paris can’t ever be ignored, and it’s the old French catalogues that persistently attract most interest on eBay (search “catalog”). Take, for example, the catalogues of noted Parisian artist and designer Jean Choiselat – not a fashion house at the forefront of people’s minds today, but with a prolific output of catalogues for men’s

and women’s spring/summer and autumn/winter collections between the thirties and sixties. The originals were always singly and beautifully printed on cartridge (thick) paper, with modern reproductions starting at around £20 per sheet. Many of the images can of course be viewed online, but those wanting full sets of originals might be lucky enough to pick up whole catalogues at around £20 for men’s and £30 for women’s.

INSPIRATION FROM SAFE HAVEN If you investigate a forest fire you will find that someone caused it, whether it is in the burn or not the fire will continue unless someone else puts it out. The causes of malaise in society are often dreamt of beforehand and so as a consequence all of us have suffered at the hand of another at some time or another. If you rewrite a poem it is no longer a poem, it is a sonnet or something similar, as the poem was the initial outcry of the heart, pure and natural and meant for your ears only . When the mishap happened you discontinued to function in the way you did previously and someone needs to step in and readjust your thinking again for you, or something… .a monumental occurrence or a standy-out incident. Overall, this is a very liberal budget. New pension alterations mean that we are now trusting pensioners to look after their own money, so they will have better control over where it is invested. This is the most radical change to pensions for nearly a century; the current system is too prescriptive and prohibits choice at the point of retirement. People will no longer be tied into buying annuities so pensioners will have access to, and will be able to manage, their own money which should give them additional financial security.

GREG MULHOLLAND MP With the Annual Budget being announced at the end of March, some of you may already be feeling the benefits of a £700 income tax cut in your April pay packet. Most of us have dreaded the Annual Budget for years, fearing that policy changes will knock us back with further taxation, but it seems that this year the Budget is altogether very positive. This budget is aimed at helping hardworking people with measures that will cut tax on savings for the lowest earners, freeze fuel duty again, and reduce energy bills. The most significant news was that this April, the amount of money you can earn before you start paying tax has increased to £10,000, and in April 2015 it will rise again to £10,500. This income tax cut will help around 33,110 people here in Leeds North West and this was in the Lib Dem 2010 manifesto.

issues that many working families face is the cost of childcare. From next year, families with children under 12 will feel the benefit of tax-free childcare; working families can get 20% support towards qualifying childcare costs The Coalition Government of up to £1,200 per child. This will recognises that one of the biggest help 21,980 families in Leeds.

There is still a long way to go before the economy will be back on track, but growth is back, unemployment is falling and inflation is under control. There were some very positive announcements in the budget and hopefully you will already be feeling the benefits in your household budget and everyday life. Going Green at Otley Courthouse Otley Green Fair was in the Courthouse on 5 April with a range of crafts, therapies, campaigns, charities, environmental groups, musical entertainment and refreshments. Visitors could find out if they should be worried about American surveillance in UK or send postcards to prisoners of conscience supported by Amnesty International as well as sampling crafts, delicacies and massage. And buy bamboo socks which, Covered was reliably informed, are the last word in softness and comfort. For the uninitiated, we ought add that the bamboo had been reconstituted into fibre and woven rather like cotton. While the usual green agenda

Horsforth in Bloom is again hosting the judges for the “In Bloom” Competition. The Council gives the “In Bloom” committee sponsorship through the Community and Environment Committee. We are all, residents and businesses, encouraged to make special efforts to “Keep Horsforth Tidy” and to encourage colourful displays for both the Spring and Summer judging.

One immediate development for Horsforth is the Council decision to become a fair Trade town. This will include the Council in using local businesses and their produce and products as far as is reasonably possible. The work of the Council continues. The Planning committee have a new category to consider - that of work done to trees in the area. The Working Group of this committee is getting ready to ask everyone for their opinions about many issues of concern to us all. Publicity for this will let all residents know where and when this will happen. Along with the giving of grants and sponsorship, the Community and Environment Committee Working Group is putting in place a Commemorative Event, at the end of July, for the start of World War 1. This will be held in Hall Park and again, there will be publicity for this. Public Safety Committee, working with the PCSo’s, is to extend the Cold Calling zones. The Council continues to ask for suggestions and ideas from residents to undertake projects and works in Horsforth. Sometimes such work can be achieved through liaison with our Leeds City Ward Councillors, or organisations and businesses within Horsforth. It is one of the principles of the Council to encourage discussion and the sharing of information to support the corporate work of the Council. Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council.

COUNCILLORS COMMENTS: BARRY ANDERSON Broadband Vouchers I have recently received information to advise that in Leeds and Bradford businesses can apply for a Broadband Connection Voucher to upgrade to a highspeed connection. The grant of up to £3,000 will pay for the capital and equipment costs of getting a better, faster connection to a business. The business pays any VAT charged and the monthly line rental to the service provider. The Voucher can be used towards the cost of making the physical broadband connection to business premises, including works such as cabling, surveys, power supply installation and costs related to wayleaves or easements. The voucher will cover the whole cost of the connection, if that cost is between £250 and £3000. It can’t pay for monthly rental or for any IT equipment used in the business. Eligibility criteria is that the business must either be a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) or a

registered charity, social enterprise or sole trader. In addition, you must be located in Leeds or Bradford districts, use a registered supplier and choose a high speed/high grade The web address for this is www. superconnectedleedsbradford.co.uk or call 0113 395 0357. There is a full Question and Answer brief on the website. To apply you need to visit the website and try the eligibility checker. Speak to the suppliers from the list of those registered in Leeds and Bradford and obtain two quotes from registered suppliers for a similar quality/speed of service. Submit your application form and two installation quotes. For more information about BDUK, go to www.gov.uk/broadband-delivery-uk From its launch in Leeds and Bradford on the 17th February 2014, the scheme will run until the end of March 2015. Cllr. STUART ANDREW MP I was incredibly pleased to hear the announcement from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that Britain’s economy will grow at a faster pace in 2014 than all other leading industrial nations. I have visited and continue to visit as many of the businesses in my constituency of Pudsey, Horsforth and Aireborough as possible and though I was pleased by the IMF announcement I certainly was not surprised considering how hard our local businesses work in striving to succeed in what has been a difficult economic climate. As these people and their workforce have shown, no government can work alone in improving a financial upturn of a country. Only by the government, business owners and workers striving for the same outcome can we start to reach our potential as a nation again and that is just what is starting to happen. I am honoured to represent these people in parliament and am very proud of their success.

as I write this the long Easter Bank Holiday Weekend is approaching which gives most people the chance to take a little time off and relax with their families, go on a short break or just to stop for a while and I hope that all of those who were off work over Easter enjoyed themselves. I will be spending Easter Sunday with some friends and family but will also be sparing a though for those such as doctors, nurses, police officers, fire service men and women and our armed forces who are working over the Easter period and apart from their loved ones at a special time. I hope all of my constituents enjoyed a very happy Easter whatever you were doing.

Journalism graduate recruited to report Yorkshire Grand Départ A recent Journalism graduate has been given a unique opportunity to report on Yorkshire’s role in the forthcoming Tour de France, in a new paid internship created by Leeds Trinity University. David Spereall, who graduated with a 2:1 BA (Hons) Journalism degree from Leeds Trinity University in 2013, has been appointed as the University’s Le Grand Départ Officer, one of six new paid internships created by the University to provide employment opportunities for recent graduates. Putting his Journalism degree into practice, David is responsible for leading on the reporting of the buildup to the Tour de France’s Yorkshire Grand Départ on a hyperlocal news website (www.ltjournalism.com) created by the University’s Centre for Journalism. Under David’s editorial lead, the news website has also provided a platform for current journalism students to report on the Yorkshire Grand Départ and have their work published. Finance Matters In this column Editor Chris Barnham investigates financial issues that might affect the residents of this area. The last budget contained some major changes, some which were expected and some which caught almost everyone by surprise. Increased ISA allowances (to £15,000 from April 2015) plus new freedoms on how the ISAs can be used will affect many people, although given the low rates available on cash ISAs the benefit for those just in cash might be fairly minimal.

A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

The main change will affect those who are yet to retire, and many will have to seriously consider the new options available through pension “liberation”. A mistake commonly made is to assume that having a freedom means having an opportunity, one that should be automatically utilised. The trust of course is that it isn’t that simple, and anyone looking to take their pension (in whatever format) needs to remember that if they get it wrong that decision will stay with them for life. Even if you do decide to remain in a risk/reward-based system (as opposed to fixing an income for life through an annuity as was generally the case before) does this mean using ISAs for income or some kind of drawdown arrangement? Some will no doubt use their funds to buy property, but is this really safer? Do you understand the consequences of moving from generally diversified assets into a single asset class? What are the tax implications? The government have said they will offer free advice, but how this is to work and how competent it will be has yet to be revealed. More options mean more ways to make mistakes. Talk to a professional.
