Hello and welcome to this month’s Covered – the magazine for the Leeds suburbs. I seem to welcome new readers every month at the moment, such is the rate of our growth. Crafthouse Crafthouse is billed as "a unique dining atmosphere in the heart of Leeds," which seems a fitting introduction to this elegant and serene restaurant perched high in the rooftops of the new Trinity shopping centre. Access is by lift, directly from Boar Lane, or via Trinity Leeds and you are soon transported away from the hustle and bustle of the shoppers below. This classy restaurant has obviously been designed with quality in mind and the attention to detail is superb. At first glance, it may just look like a tasteful fusion of varying materials in

shades of grey, black and brown but as you settle in, and allow your eye to wander, it becomes apparent that it's all a very subtle representation of the area's rich, industrial heritage; woven seats, stainless steel knives from Sheffield and threaded room dividers, reminiscent of the great weaving looms once operating in mills throughout

Leeds. And that's not the only Yorkshire connection... all of the produce here has been sourced from within a 60 mile radius and suppliers are hand picked by Head Chef, Lee Bennett. Lee, himself, was born in Yorkshire and has worked in restaurants throughout the world, from London to Singapore. After training under such well respected names as Gordon Ramsey and Pierre Gagniare, Lee has returned to Yorkshire to lead the team of some 20 chefs who work at Crafthouse and its sister venue, Angelica, and he describes the food on offer here as "good, honest food cooked properly." The menus are seasonal and include an a la carte selection, fixed price or tasting menu. Starters include smoked salmon served on a warm potato pancake, asparagus with breaded duck egg or Bridlington Bay bisque. Main courses are equally varied and range from Denby

Dale lamb shoulder to seabass or a goat's cheese, pea and bean risotto. Another popular option at Crafthouse is the Josper Oven, which grills meat and seafood at an incredible 480 degrees centigrade over charcoal, creating a unique taste. Selections include steaks, pork chops and king prawns. There is a children's menu available and

a really intensive wine selection which even details organic wines. And if you struggle to choose a dessert, you could always opt for the Crafthouse Dessert Selection for two to share, offering such delights as pistachio soufflĂŠ, vanilla and mango cheesecake or valhrona dulcey chocolate dome. For those looking for a truly original dining experience,

Crafthouse offers the exclusive Chef Counter experience. Afforded an uninterrupted view of the kitchen and bar area, you will receive special attention, not only from the chefs, but from the sommelier, cocktail mixologists and waiting staff whilst enjoying a bespoke 5 course tasting menu. The restaurant offers 144 covers but still manages to feel intimate, and is open for lunch and dinner, giving views across the city from most tables, including from a dedicated outdoor terrace which is flanked by swaying trees and potted plants adjacent to the glass domed rooftop of Leeds Trinity. To the other side sits Holy Trinity Church, with it's distinguished bell tower sitting alongside the restaurant. Events can be catered for and there is a private dining room available which can seat up to 14 people. Crafthouse is a popular venue though and booking is advisable. www.crafthouse-restaurant.com

Covered Smoked Salmon with Potato Pancake Serves 4 The perfect steak

cookbook

200g long sliced quality smoked salmon, 200g mashed potato, 1 egg, Salt 2 tbsp milk (warm), 2 tbsp double cream (warm), 1tbs plain flour, 4 egg whites, Crème fraiche

With the mashed potato still hot, fold in the flour, then the milk and cream, then the eggs one by one and season. Whisk up the egg whites in a separate bowl until they form soft peaks and fold into stage one using a spatula. Take small frying pan and heat up with a little oil, before pouring in the mix and cooking in the oven at 180oc for 8 minutes. Whilst still hot, take ¼ of the smoked salmon and place onto each pancake and finish with a teaspoon of crème fraiche. • Try to buy ‘aged-beef’- it is firmer than non-aged and has less moisture content. The reduced moisture helps tenderise the meat and concentrate flavour. • You don’t always need to get the most expensive cut. Opt for a good rump from a reputable butcher for plenty of flavour. If you buy well you don’t always need the finest cut. • Let the meat reach room temperature before cooking. It will cook more evenly throughout if the same temperature throughout. • Simple seasoning is best – before cooking season thoroughly with coarse salt. • Heat is key to cooking your steak – a hot grill will char the meat and seal in the flavour. • Forget the oil – oil can cause fire flare up and can change the flavour. If the cooking surface is hot enough the steak shouldn’t stick. • Most grills have different hot spots. If you rotate the meat you’ll ensure it cooks evenly. • Allow it to rest for a minimum of 2/3 minutes. This will allow the juices to settle and the meat to reach it’s final tenderness as the temperature evens. • Clean your grill. Don’t think that by leaving it you’re leaving a layer of juices for next time – it’ll just burn on and affect the flavour. If you can, clean it whilst it’s warm as any fat will clean more easily.

Chocolate Fondant

Serves 8

280g Dark chocolate (64%), 150g Butter, 170g Sugar, 4 Eggs, 60g Plain flour

Melt the chocolate and butter in a bain-marie (a bowl resting over a pan with water in – avoids burning) Whisk together the sugar and the eggs. Add this mixture to the chocolate and butter mixture. Whisk in the flour. Butter and flour your moulds or ramequin (to stop the mix from sticking) Pipe 80 to 100g of mixture into each mould. Bake for around 9-10 minutes at 180˚C. To Finish, Coat the fondant with warm chocolate sauce. Make a quenelle of caramel or serve with vanilla ice cream.

GREG MULHOLLAND MP Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge I have been very lucky recently to test out the Wharfedale Three Peaks (W3P) challenge that has been devised by the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) before swarms of walkers will give it a go at the inaugural fundraising event on 28th June. As a keen walker, and the British Mountaineering Council’s Parliamentary Sports Fellow, I relished the opportunity to put on my walking boots and try out the W3P route. The 22 mile route started and ended in Kettlewell, and circled the high moors above one of the most spectacular sections of the Tour de France route. With the three summits of Birks Fell, Buckden Pike and Great Whernside; I climbed a greater total ascent than Ben Nevis! We are so lucky to have such dramatic scenery on our doorstep and the W3P route really showcases Wharfedale at its finest. The hills and mountains are open to everyone and offer endless possibilities for enjoyment and adventure. The UWFRA needs £40,000 each year to keep rescuing people

part of the Yorkshire Dales relies on the emergency service they provide, and that’s why it’s important to support such a wonderful, hardworking team of volunteers who provide the area’s mountain rescue service 365 days a year and save people’s lives. As well as the W3P route, there are also two other easier routesa 13.5 mile Two Peaks, and a 4.5 mile family and community routeso there really is something for everyone. So get your entry forms in and look forward to a great day’s walking on 28th June in and animals from the caves and our stunning countryside! Details fells of Wharfedale, Nidderdale, about the event can be found on Littondale and Mid-Airedale. All the UWFRA website of us who enjoy this wonderful (www.uwfra.org.uk).

18 News from the Suburbs

The Thankful Village Badapple Theatre is touring with an innovative new production that finds humour within the tragedy of The Great War. The play is set in the fictitious village of Bottledale – designated a “thankful village” because it suffered no casualties in WWI. That designation is a genuine one and was coined in the 1930s. Recent extensive research has extended the classification to 53 such civil parishes in England and Wales – and none in Ireland or Scotland. After several years of her own research, including visits to battle sites and military cemeteries in Flanders, Badapple’s director and published playwright Kate Bramley created Bottledale as another. The original musical score is by Jezz Lowe. Covered visited the company’s final rehearsal at Kirk Hammerton Village Hall in April and spoke with Kate and actors Kaitlin Howard, Zoe Land and Emma Bright. The play explores the relationship between three men from Bottledale, enlisted in the army and posted to Flanders. Captain Arthur Proud had been landlord of The White Horse Inn. The two privates are Sydney (a blacksmith) and Tommy (a thresher). Then there are the wives at home – Mrs Proud (now the landlady) and Nellie and Edie (her employees). Clever parallels are drawn from their surreally parallel lives. The three actors are also in parallel. Each plays both the husband and wife. In costume but not make up for their

male characters, the audience is constantly reminded of the mirror imagery between Bottledale and the trenches. Badapple Theatre is a fully professional theatre company and registered charity. The Thankful Village has a very busy touring schedule, almost daily, at small venues throughout north Yorkshire and some beyond. Their website badappletheatre.com gives comprehensive details of all plays and performances. The Thankful Village closes in Hull on 22 June. Its only appearance in the Leeds area is at Thorner Victory Hall on Saturday 14 June. Bookings online or 07521 372994 (Thorner only).

Playwright and director Kate Bramley on the last day of rehearsals, reflecting on an original WWI death Plaque – one was issued by the War Department to next of kin in respect of each and every WWI Commonwealth casualty. The inhabitants of Bottledale received none – therefore a designated “Thankful Village”.

LLoving ovingYorkshire Yout h. In a Yorkshire factory hundreds of items are lovingly designed, made and shipped out across the UK. With 17 concessions in Topshop up and down the country, Loving Youth is making its mark in UK fashion. Loving Youth is a new fashion label bringing ‘life loving fashion vultures’ must-have, perfectly picked Vintage Pieces and new creations manufactured in Yorkshire. With reports about popular brands using cheap labour abroad in sweat shop conditions, Loving Youth is committed to bringing manufacturing back to the UK. The label provides the means for fashionistas to ditch exploitative high street chains and start buying British. Created in 2013, Loving Youth is the sister company of vintage shop Blue Rinse. The label is run by Katie Hammonds and Faye Mathieson, who are passionate about their county and their clothes. “All the fabrics and materials are all sourced here in the UK” says Faye. “We want to create pieces you are going to love and bring

them at affordable prices that you will love! We started with one concession in Topshop at Trinity Leeds. Within a year we had concessions in 17 Topshops across the UK, we cannot believe how quickly it has grown!” Loving Youth also reimagine Vintage clothing. They may take an old pair of dungarees and turn it into a must-have new shirt! Katie & Faye have a fantastic eye for fashion. Be assured, there will be something in their collection that would look amazing in your wardrobe. Loving Youth’s ethical approach to fashion is definitely the way forward, and Katie and Faye are forward thinking ladies.

They are already making this season’s summer collection essentials. They know you cannot wait to get your hands on something for the festival season, and when you buy your gorgeous new items you can buy with confidence, knowing you’re buying British. Better still, you’re buying Yorkshire!

THE WONDER OF WAX The sun has arrived but alas, so has the need for maintenance and the discomfort of endless shaving and plucking. By the time the hair is sorted the sun will have gone! It’s time to down razors and tweezers and head to your local salon to try a wax. Seeking to bring readers the best advice, this month Covered popped in to Horsforth Beauty Suite to meet Charlotte, an expert in waxing. Charlotte has a keen eye for detail and nothing is out of place in this wonderful setting. The colours and ambience all create a gorgeous, relaxing atmosphere. Charlotte discussed the waxing process. With 6 years experience she has mastered the art! “Before you go for your waxing be sure you know what you want. It could be really simple, such as legs, eyebrows or under arms. However, when it comes to bikini waxing, you have options”. “The most popular is the ‘Bikini Wax’. This removes hair from the bikini line, just where your bikini or swimsuit would

sit. Next is a ‘Brazilian’, which removes the majority of hair from the bikini area, but leaves a little bit that isn’t visible if you were wearing a bikini. The ‘Hollywood’ involves removal of all hair from the area”. Charlotte explained the best way to achieve the ultimate wax. “It all starts at home before the client comes for their waxing. I recommend exfoliating the area really well and having a hot bath if they can before they come. This will open up the hair follicles. If you are worried about the pain then take a Paracetamol an hour before coming. It doesn’t hurt as much as people make out though so don’t be worried! Once you arrive you will be made comfortable in a private beauty room where the procedure is explained. Then warm wax is applied to the hair and covered with small strips of cloth, which is then pulled off quickly to remove hair from the roots”.

Charlotte’s favourite is a warm cream wax because it nourishes and moisturises the skin. It is also great for sensitive areas. The benefits of waxing are that the hair doesn’t grow back as quickly and re-growth is soft, not prickly like after shaving. Waxing gives a smoother finish too, as the process exfoliates the skin leaving a silky smooth result. With regular waxing hair follicles begin to die preventing future re-growth. Waxing lifts hair straight from the root, which is why the results last at least twice as long as shaving. Shaving only removes the tip of the hair. Once the waxing is finished, expect some pampering. Charlotte explains she would then apply aloe vera jelly or lavender oil to soothe and calm the skin. This will also help prevent in-growing hairs and reduce redness sometimes associated with waxing. Aftercare is simple. For at least 24 hours do not apply perfume

Fashion, Hair & Beauty 35

or deodorant to the waxed area or take a hot bath or sauna as the hair follicles are open and this will irritate the skin. After 24 hours, exfoliate the area again. This will prevent in-growing hairs. There they are - the key steps to a wonderful wax by an expert! The Horsforth Beauty Suite is open Tuesday to Saturday and can meet a variety of beauty needs, including sunbeds, acrylic nails, Indian head massage and eyelash extensions. It also stocks a fantastic range of Dermalogica products. Why not call in and experience some expert pampering? NEWS FROM LPS The Leeds Photographic Society recently held the first of this year's summer outings with an evening trip to Otley. The picturesque market town has a wealth of photographic attractions' from architecture and street photography to views of the park gardens and River Wharfe, and the members enjoyed a sociable evening of photography before retiring to the pub for some light refreshment. Meanwhile some of the society's other projects have come to fruition and in May the members presented 12 large format photographs to the Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, in Headingley Leeds. The images which will be used to decorate the new 'In Patient Unit' at the hospice were created on Acrylic Panels and feature a variety of local landscape and floral images. The project was made possible by a

of year, avoid whole peanuts or peanut chunks, which can choke young birds. If you are lucky, in spring, you may also see or hear migrant birds from Africa, such as chiffchaffs, willow warblers and blackcaps. These birds are largely insect feeders with finer bills than finches, for example, so do not come to garden feeders as readily. Growing flowering plants which attract insects will be of most help to them.

Spring is a time of frenzied activity for the wildlife in your garden. Nesting, defending territories and feeding young use up a lot of energy, and the food you provide can be a lifeline for the adult birds (the chicks need to take in water with their food, so need juicy caterpillars rather than seeds). Every garden is different, and the birds you see will depend very much on where you are and on the natural resources in and around your garden. Some birds will feed at feeders (tits, finches and sparrows), whilst others find it difficult to perch, and prefer to feed on the ground (blackbirds, dunnocks, thrushes). Ideal foods are sunflower hearts, seed mixes,

June is bursting out all over, as the old song goes, and colour is really starting to show all over the garden. Two essential tasks, keep the hoe going to take out all your weeds on a regular basis. Then if your soil is heavy, lift your tulip and hyacinths after they have died down and store them in a cool dry area. Large clumps of daffodils will not flower well when congested, so lift, divide, and replant every few years to rejuvenate these lovely flowers. In order to maintain a good show of summer bulbs, it is essential to feed them with a high potash feed (tomato food) after dead heading to build the bulbs up for the following year. If frost has really gone, finish planting out summer bedding together with any tender exotic plants. Give your indoor plants a summer holiday by placing them outside and remembering to water and feed them as necessary. As your perennial flowers, like lupins, poppies etc. finish flowering, cut off all the dead flowers to encourage a second flush. Pinch out the tops of chrysanthemums to make them bush out, which will encourage them to produce more flowering stems for a really impressive show.

During late June, apple and pear trees experience the June Drop, which means the trees naturally shed excess fruit when there are too many fruits to ripen. If you still see clusters of tiny fruit after this event you can thin the fruits further to make sure all the remaining fruits will grow to a decent size. Remove any raspberry suckers which are growing at a distance from the main row and tie in new growth on blackberry canes as these will produce fruit next year. Trim your privet and other fast growing hedges after first checking there are no birds nesting in them. The HAGA Trading Hut is open 7pm - 8pm every Friday, and Saturday 10.30am - 12pm during May. THE MUSIC THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING Red Eagle Events are bringing some of music’s bestknown names to Millennium Square in August for the Leeds Ska and Mod Festival. For those of you not in the know, Ska originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae - combining elements of Caribbean Mento and Calypso with American Jazz and Rhythm and Blues. It is characterised by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat. In the early 1960s, Ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica and was popular with British Mods. Mods, initially a small group of clothes-focused 1950s working class young men insisted on clothes and shoes tailored to their style. Early Mods watched French and Italian art films and read Italian magazines to look for style ideas. By the summer of 1966, the Mod scene was in sharp decline but a revival started in the late 1970s when thousands of Mod revivalists attended scooter rallies in locations such as Scarborough and the Isle of Wight. This revival was partly inspired by the 1979 film Quadrophenia and by Mod-influenced bands such as The Jam. More recently, the 1990s Britpop scene featured bands with noticeable Mod influences such as Oasis, Blur, Ocean Colour Scene and The Verve.

INSPIRATION FROM SAFE HAVEN The Juniper tree is set apart for its rarity as a species, but is that possible in today’s mass production of anything we want or require? Have you a heart to listen to this …we mass produce the items we don’t really need and infiltrate danger zones by doing it, as the need grows so does the demands upon our time and our efforts. We assume society will cope but can it stand up to so much pressure upon it, to perform at such a rate that it extends itself into unknown territory in order to meet inaccessible quantity and more important, ‘the whim’ of man himself when he doesn’t really want it anymore anyway? Then there is a ‘sale’ of the excess and the whole principle is left wide open to ridicule leaving its founder perplexed and unappreciated. Can you understand that if everything was left to the natural there would be enough for everyone, no surfeit and no need and all would be well once again.

Nourish your soul oh you children of need, ask a favour and it will be granted to you by a saviour who longs for you to re-adapt your thinking to a point of view once initiated by a source so great nothing compares to it, in this life or the next. Readopt the position you were meant for and I will acknowledge you before My Father. Have a heart to listen… I beg you in love. Til next time God Bless

Belgrave Music Hall Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen is an independent venue offering music, art, film and food over three floors. This unique and vibrant addition to Leeds' Northern Quarter is easily noticeable on Cross Belgrave Street with it's bright, neon lights. The building first opened in 1934 as Leeds Children's Palace, a nursery built to provide childcare for the working families of the area. Throughout the years it has had many incarnations... Ike's Bistro in the early 90's through to Riley's Snooker Hall recently. Nowadays, this red brick building is home to the brainchild of Simon Stevens and Ash Kollakowski, who opened it as Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen in October 2013. The two also organise the increasingly popular Beacons Festival, which is held annually in Skipton. And that's the kind of vibe you get at Belgrave.... it's like a music and arts festival, all cleverly packaged up into one rather quirky indoor space.

The ground floor is the main bar and canteen, with wooden tables and benches alongside comfortable sofas. The furniture is reclaimed and fits in with the simplistic, retro vibe of the place. Exposed brickwork and chipboard sit by enormous windows flooding in natural light. The bar offers a good range of local ales and the 'canteen style' food is on offer from 12pm until late, seven days a week. There are several resident food companies operating at Belgrave. Dough Boys are the inhouse pizza outlet, baking freshly and selling them by the slice or whole. The menu changes daily but there will always be six with gluten free and vegan options available. Patty Smith's burgers

are served in a brioche bun with a range of exciting toppings and Fu Schnicken's offer Guo Bao Taiwanese steamed buns. There's also Layne's Espresso serving delicious cakes, Sunday brunch and expertly crafted coffee. The monthly 'Street Feast' is popular and has select vendors offering a range of exotic and

affordable food to sample. When we visited there was Mexican, Caribbean, Vietnamese and ice-creams, amongst others, and it was fantastic to see so many families there. Upstairs was largely dedicated to the Art Market with stalls selling original work alongside vinyl in what would usually be the live event room. This 200 capacity venue was part of the recent 'Live at Leeds' and regularly

plays host to enviable names such as James Taylor Quartet, Minneapolis synthpop band Polica and Brooklyn songwriter Joan As Policewoman, as well as promoting new talent and regularly hosting comedy and film events. Sitting on top is the roof terrace. Leeds desperately needs more outdoor spaces and this one fits the bill in any weather. Complete

with garden sheds, bunting and deck chairs it follows the festival theme and is a great, chilled out space to take in the skyline. Belgrave Music Hall is quite hip and studenty, but it has so much to offer to a whole range of people, whether it's enjoying a coffee with your paper or taking in some of the most vibrant music Leeds has to offer. www.belgravemusichall.com

ELMHURST STILL GOING STRONG 45 YEARS ON

You must have installed a few windows in the last 45 years, do you know how many?

Nearing a milestone 45 years trading is some feat, particularly in a competitive environment like windows, doors and conservatories. Covered talk to Elmhurst’s Richard Abrahams about his impending anniversary and if they’ll be marking the year with sapphires.

When did the Elmhurst story begin? My Father Jack set the business up in 1970 at premises on Whitkirk roundabout. We’re still in the same spot to this day, though the showroom has undergone extensive refurbishment recently. I’ve been running the business, under the keen eye of Jack, for about 22 years now. My

Mother Norma still looks after the finances today – checking I’m not overspending! We’re all proud to have remained a true family company all these years.

Sounds like everyone has been in it for the long haul…. Definitely, Adele our office manager has been with us for nearly 30 years, installations

At the last count we have over 10,000 satisfied customers! It’s difficult to say how many windows we’ve fitted but our customers range from one-off windows, to full houses and conservatories – I’d say we’ve handled over 100,000 panes of glass at least! About 70% of customers have used us more than once, I’m assuming the other 30% will once it’s time to replace our last installation for them.

What changes have there been in the industry?

I think uPVC companies got a bad reputation at one point – there were plenty of cowboys on the scene, looking to cash in with quick sales and cheap units with no follow-

quite simply, a revelation and helps us to create beautiful, comfortable rooms, that add value to your home.

Ok, so I’m thinking of some home improvements – what should I look out for?

up customer service. Since 2002, genuine installation companies have to adhere to current Building Regulations under the FENSA registered scheme – it has made the industry more professional.

What about today’s products? Energy Efficiency is on trend! We fit A Rated Windows which are 60% more efficient than the ones we fitted 30 years ago. We replace a lot of windows that we installed all that time ago. We now fit solar controlled glass roofs to conservatories so 70% of "green house" heat is extracted. That ensures a conservatory can be used comfortably 12 months of the year. We’re currently investing in a ‘Green Deal Accreditation’ enabling us to become a green deal installer.

What other home improvement products have you launched? The past 10 years have seen a boom in many technologies and plastics are no different. We can now offer an extensive range of maintenance free products and be confident that the quality is now good enough for our customers. Bi-fold doors have proved really popular, they really open the

house up in summer. Composite doors are now replacing pvc ones, they look like wood but there’s no need to sand and paint every year! We also install roofline products, fascias, soffits and gutters that will last for years, again no need for a paintbrush and ladders!

What’s the best thing about running Elmhurst? Without doubts, it’s the satisfied customers who come back to us 30 years after their initial installation – it’s like being re-united with old friends. Customers are amazed that units have lasted twice as long as our famous 15 year guarantee.

There must be bad things? Although I’m doing my best to keep fit and trim, all the team like to get cakes and chocolate in the office so dieting is so hard! Otherwise, I’m living the dream!

What do you consider to be your best product? The Loggia conservatory: The Loggia system builds stunning extensions, replacing traditional conservatories and makes orangeries affordable. Combining the very best of British building excellence with a generous helping of Italian inspiration, Loggia is,

Ask anyone who quotes you for their current offers and discounts – everyone has a promotion on. Critical to any investment in your property, you should make sure the company you are dealing with has been established for some years - some say they have but watch out, they may have a chequered history! If a guarantee is offered, ask what it consists of for example our 15-year guarantee covers everything: labour and materials, including sealed units breaking down. Some will cover very little – be warned! Make sure you ask about planning permission on conservatories - you could get caught out – Elmhurst take care of things like that, for me that’s what service is all about – anything we can do to ensure your project runs smoothly and efficiently is just part of the package.

Sapphires are traditionally given on a 45th anniversary, are you expecting some jewels to come your way? Wouldn’t that be nice! Continued good reports from thousands of customers is reward enough for me. The family will certainly celebrate the milestone in some way – perhaps a little Bombay Sapphire Gin might be on the cards - here’s to another 45 years of business! If you’d like to know more about Elmhurst’s range of products and services and find out just why thousands of customers would recommend them, give Richard a call on: 0113 264 4505 or visit www.elmhurst-windows.co.uk

The full line-up (l-r) Ric Sanders, Simon Nicol, Gerry Conway, Dave Pegg and Chris Leslie

Fairport Convention in Ilkley Most of the big names in folk music have played with Fairport Convention at one time or another in the band’s 47-year history; Richard Thompson, Ashley Hutchings, Dave Swarbrick, Dave Mattacks, the late Sandy Denny – to name but a few. The current line-up is led by founder member Simon Nicol on guitar with Dave Pegg (34 years in the band) on bass, Ric Sanders on fiddle, Gerry Conway as a one-man rhythm section and Chris Leslie on guitar, mandolin, fiddle and whistle. They played in Kings Hall, Ilkley – for the first time – on 21 May to an enthusiastic reception. Two hourlong sets saw them ranging over a wide repertoire, from traditional folk staples like Matty Groves (from the iconic album Liege and Lief) to up-to-date numbers like Myths and Heroes. The latter is typical of Fairport’s approach to music, as entertainment and as a vehicle for bringing serious issues to mind. One such was Genesis Hall, a Richard Thompson composition from 1968 inspired by the housing crisis and evictions of tenants in London. Sadly, not much has changed on that front.

Simon Nicol in great voice at Kings Hall (Images: ivorhughes.com)

Fairport is credited with being the original “folk rock” band and is remarkable for the way it has evolved over the decades. Simon Nicol looks every inch the lead singer and guitarist, but it was a long time before he felt confident in the role, as he confesses on the band’s website. Dave Pegg never intended to play bass, now it is hard to imagine anyone else there. That they are all multi-talented was clear from this performance. Ric Sanders is a virtuoso violinist, amply demonstrated in the instrumental numbers. Chris Leslie, allegedly, can Morris dance while fiddling and singing – not hard to believe given the ease with which he picked up a succession of instruments. He is also a gifted songwriter and vocalist. Part of the pleasure of an evening like this is the chat between numbers

and Fairport judged it brilliantly. Mostly Nicol, but Pegg and Leslie made useful contributions and there was plenty of interaction with the audience, who clearly knew their back story. Fairport’s current tour lasts until 7 June, after which they will be getting ready for their August festival at Cropredy in Oxfordshire. Fairport’s Cropredy Convention is a great festival, smaller and more intimate than monsters like Glastonbury, and usually a lot less muddy. Running 7-9 August, it features Fairport in acoustic and electric mode as well as the likes of the Waterboys and Capercaillie. For the full programme and anything you want to know about the band, check the website fairportconvention.com

Shows Within a Show at Otley’s Annual Event Blessed with glorious weather, none of the ingredients of this year’s show (17 May) were impeded by last year’s mud. Several of the marquees had to have their sides raised to provide ventilation for the exhibitors and their exhibits alike. One was the poultry show which, like so many of the other competitions and displays, was a show within a show. Breeding birds for show is a popular hobby, judging from the number of entries. And it’s not like farmers or dog breeders showing their best or prettiest working cattle, horses or dogs. Show birds don’t breed, lay or taste any better than those in the farmyard. So, Otley and other prestigious shows aren’t just another day at the office for the exhibitors, not even for those otherwise connected to the poultry trade. One exhibitor from a family of local poulterers was 23 year old Ashley Marshall from Skipton (pictured). Ashley has Down’s Syndrome. He is shortly to complete a three-year diploma course, including small animal care, at Craven College. His mother, Sue Feather, told Covered that there are few prospects for Ashley after college and that she and husband Richard have encouraged and

Another Otley Show competitor less directly connected to the poultry trade was Debbie Howe (pictured). Debbie, a science teacher in Wakefield, found that hatching chickens at her own school held the pupils’ interest better than text books and was a very versatile way of introducing them to all aspects of the science curriculum - so much so that her own enterprise “eggucation” (ouch!) has reached schools all across Yorkshire, including Leeds.

The venue will also be holding workshops throughout June with community arts company The Big Hoo-Ha to craft “scareclists” - scarecrow cyclists - to put their own local spin on the decorative bicycles that adorn the route, along with a range of other cycle-themed arts and crafts activities. In addition, they’ll be celebrating all things Gallic with Being Brel on the 21st of June, an intense one-man show probing the life and works of the legendary singer Jacques Brel. Dave Robson, Chair of the Courthouse’s Board, said “We’re hugely excited by what the Tour means as a shared cultural event for the people that live here, and hope that the wide range of activities we have on offer, from knitting to storytelling to carnival parades, will encourage people to come down and try something new”.

Race day itself will see the building opening early with bands, dancing and big screen coverage of the action in its courtyard. For more information or to book tickets, visit www.otleycourthouse. org.uk or ring 01943 467466

Entente très cordiale – Ilkley welcomes a delegation from Coutances The May Day weekend enjoyed beautiful weather, all the better to show off Ilkley and its surroundings to visitors from the twin town of Coutances, in Normandy – celebrated too by the Tricolore fluttering from the Town Hall, at Darwin Gardens and other key sites. Twenty delegates were led by Yves Lamy, Mayor of Coutances, and Jean-Paul Madelénat, Chairman of the Coutances Twinning Committee. They arrived at Ilkley Tennis Club to meet their hosts: members of the Ilkley committee, Club Francophone and hospitable Wharfe Valley residents. A fish supper at Otley’s Maypole Restaurant was followed by an evening of folk music by the Duncan McFarlane acoustic trio. This was very well received; Duncan had done his homework and made the guests feel most welcome. Highlights of the programme were a Civic

Reception at Ilkley Town Hall, a walk led by Alex Cockshott of Ilkley Civic Society on the theme of “Taking the Waters in Ilkley” and a buffet kindly hosted by Sue and Keith Ferguson. The visit ended on a high note at the Lord Mayor’s Ball in Bradford – coincidentally on a Parisian theme – where special mention was made of the delegation,

at the initiative of Cllr Mike Gibbons, leader of Ilkley Parish Council and Lord Mayor elect of Bradford. Two projects came out of the visit: a houseswapping scheme and a plan to commemorate WWI and WWII by a release of homing pigeons by the Midland National Flying Club. Covered will bring you details in the next issue!

Wharfe Wool Fair Otley Courthouse continues to be a valuable community hub and resource for so many arts, music and crafts related events for the town itself and beyond. And so it was on 10 May when it hosted Wharfe Wool Fair. One of several reminders that Le Tour is only a month away

Yorkshire Does Even More Vintage The reason that March saw the last Leeds Vintage Fashion Fair at Queen’s Hotel was the organiser’s increased family commitments and not any reduction in demand. In fact, demand remains so great that a new organiser has recently emerged – creating fresh events in addition to the existing vintage fashion fairs in Halifax, Harrogate, Huddersfield, Leeds, Saltaire, Scarborough and York. Now and Then Events was founded in York in 2011 by Samantha Agnew and Alex Claydon (pictured). Already professional corporate and civic events managers and organisers, they decided to combine their shared passion for all things vintage and Britain Does Vintage was the result. Choosing prestigious and historic venues, they now run vintage fashion, accessory and homeware events in Yorkshire (Huddersfield, Sheffield and York) and as far afield as Newcastle and Leicester. They are always titled “[Town] Does Vintage”, so their events aren’t difficult to spot. Covered visited Sheffield Does Vintage on 10 May, in Sheffield’s Cutler’s Hall. There were two messages from the vintage scene. First, the proliferation of events and ever growing media interest, including new magazines and websites, shows that interest isn’t going to fade in the foreseeable future. The second message, possibly more telling, is that demand is beginning to outstrip supply – at least the supply of original clothing in good condition. Two of the exhibitors are now making or modifying dresses and outfits using reclaimed fabric or making them

Samantha Agnew and Alex Claydon’s “Does Vintage” events have won awards from York and Yorkshire tourism and business, and from the national vintage fashion community.

Exhibitors Hannah Rose Designs (Dronfield) (seated) and Black Cat Vintage (Grimsby) are among those helping meet the continued demand for vintage clothing by making pieces from scratch. The swimsuit was priced at £25 and the dress, made from an original 1957 Parisian fashion house pattern, £40.

afresh from vintage dressmaking patterns. So, for the same sort of money you can now buy vintage fashion where neither you nor the outfit needs to be resized. Scampston Does Vintage, near Malton, is a weekend of vintage fashion, vehicles and entertainments on 6 and 7 June. The next and nearest one day fair is Huddersfield Does Vintage (Town Hall) on 16 August.

Travelling Through Leeds

Last year’s game of cat and mouse between LCC and the travelling community – this settlement on the ring road, in Chapel Allerton, had been preceded by evictions from West Park and Adel. Leeds GATE praises LCC’s new policies as being a beacon to the rest of the country – but will they work for both communities?

Last September Covered reported unwelcome temporary traveller communities along the ring road – at the time in West Park, Adel and Chapel Allerton. Among other observations, we criticised Leeds CC for the apparent lack of a clearly stated and workable policy that could manage such events - then and in the future. Since then Helen Jones of Leeds GATE (representing the interests of travelling and Gypsy communities) has helpfully got back to us. While accepting that some of the settlements had been unwelcome, she outlined the city’s legal responsibilities towards communities with a nomadic lifestyle. She was hopeful, even confident, that new measures (including a negotiated stopping policy) would help ease past anxieties and disruptions – among the travelling community as well as local residents. While GATE’s response was remarkably comprehensive, informative, helpful and positive, Cllr Barry Anderson remained unconvinced when we spoke with him. Last year he had been the intermediary between anxious constituents in Adel and the authorities responsible for evicting two traveller communities on Bedquilts playing fields. Not easy at the time – LCC hadn’t been keeping him fully in the picture while he was on a short break following his beloved Hibernian Football Club. At the time of going to press, traveller communities had recently appeared in Otley (on the road out to Ilkley) and in West Park (near McDonalds). Too early on the season, and without sufficient volumes, to indicate whether LCC has got the balance right between the needs and rights of both resident and itinerant communities. We shall see.

THERE’S MORE TO

TRY SOMETHING

DIFFERENT! There's so many sports out there it is hard to choose a favourite. Football, rugby, cricket, golf. How about archery, bubble football, korfball and American football. They all sound great, but you can't get involved with those sports in the UK though can you? As luck would have it, you can and you don't even need to leave Yorkshire! Archery is getting more and more popular each year, especially with it being an Olympic sport but appeals to so many people because of their want to emulate the fabled Robin Hood. Trinity Sport now plays host to an archery club on a weekly basis and offers both beginners and experienced archers the chance to come along and get involved. Archery on your doorstep, who knew? Bubble football (also known as zorb football) is a relatively new concept that puts zorbing and football together to create a brand new, exciting activity. Players are engulfed from the waist up in an inf latable ball that allows them to play football with

The Lad Experience have teamed up with Leeds Goals Soccer Centre in Kirkstall to bring Bubble football to the local area with prices starting at ÂŁ20. Korfball sounds exotic and far from accessible but that is definitely not the case. In fact there is a korfball club in Leeds that is welcoming to players of all abilities. This fun and exciting sport combines basketball and netball and allows men and women to play on the same team on equal terms, a very

Brits watch the Super Bowl each year. However, did you know that Yorkshire plays host to a few American football teams that you can get involved with? American football is very similar to rugby and is just as exciting, hard hitting, action packed and fast paced if not more so. One of the 50+ UK based sides is the Yorkshire Rams who play at Middleton, South Leeds. Not only are the team on the lookout for players, but new fans and game day volunteers are also required and welcomed. There are a lot of unique sports out there just waiting for you to get involved, so go ahead, jump in and enjoy. Written by Daniel Roberts

62 Exploring Leeds

Exploring Leeds A WALK AROUND OTLEY PART 1 Having visited the centre of Leeds for the last two walks, this month's walk is located in Otley, an historic town with an entry in the Domesday Book. The markets are an important aspect of the town, and if visiting on a Friday or Saturday, stalls will be found on the main street Kirkgate, and also in the Market Place itself. The 750 year old cattle market can still be visited on a Monday. The walk starts by the Jubilee Clock (erected to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887) in the centre of town. From the clock, head in a southerly direction along Kirkgate, named so because it was “The Way to the Church [Kirk]”. Opposite is the Old Hall, a fashionable 18th century town house with five bay windows. Just after on the left, look up to the stone dated 1744. This is where the Queens Head Inn used to be located. Cross over the road. The present Anglican Church built in the 12th Century is on the site of a Saxon place of worship. The Church registers commence in 1562 and include many interesting entries, including the signature of John Wesley in 1788 when he was the officiant at a wedding in the town. Opposite the churchyard is a

memorial to the men who lost their lives in the construction of the Bramhope Tunnel on the railway line built between Leeds and Harrogate during 1845 and 1849. Now walk up the passageway by the side of the railway monument to arrive at Westgate. On the right, pass the former vicarage (built in 1673), and then drop down to exit by The Cross Pipes Inn. Cross over the road, turn right and then turn left through the car park and down a footpath eventually exiting by the bridge.

Turn right up Bridge Street passing the Bridge Church on the left and the Catholic Church on the right. At the top of the street turn right by the solicitors’ offices in what was formerly the Royal Oak Inn (the name is visible in the doorway). To the right is a building that was the Old Grammar School. Just before he died in 1603, prominent businessman Thomas Cave left £250 for the founding of a school on the proviso that the town residents raise a similar amount and the school be founded within 4 years of his death. James I granted the Charter for the school in April 1607 within 3 days of the 4 year deadline. The school opened in 1611 and was named Prince Henry’s Grammar School after James’ eldest son, the Prince of Wales, who died before he could succeed his father. The school was able to use the Prince of Wales feathers in its crest and it still has the Royal Charter in the present buildings over the river on Farnley Lane.

Next to the Old Grammar School is a statue of Thomas Chippendale, the 18th Century Cabinet Maker. Whilst it cannot be proved that Thomas Chippendale was actually born in Otley, it is known that he was christened in the Parish Church on the 5th June 1781 from the Parish Records. His father was a local joiner and the family is reputed to have lived at that time in a house on Boroughgate where the present Skipton Building Society is located. Go through Manor Square and back to the Market Place. So ends the tour of the western part of Otley. The remainder to the east will continue in the next issue. Jubilee Clock

64 Blast from the Past

Back to the Future The recent loss of five British servicemen in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, and last November’s police helicopter crash in Glasgow, received extensive media coverage. Both were subjected to scrutiny at the highest level by uniformed and civilian investigators. Conversely, a similar incident that took the life of Charles Butler of West Park on 27 August 1917 was not. Butler was a Captain in the Royal Flying Corps (now RAF). Training a cadet at an English airfield, his airplane inexplicably fell from the sky. Both were killed. Such was the rate of casualties during WWI that the incident never made the national press – possibly not even the regional. The information can be found online buried among alarmingly brief military reports and in a 1917 issue of Flight magazine. Also reported on the same page of Flight was a corruption case being brought against three men. Lyman J Seeley, an American aviator, inventor and salesman had been charged with bribing Wing Commander John Cyril Porte of Royal Navy Air Service procurement into buying his company’s aircraft. William August Casson, a recently retired senior civil servant and practising barrister, was charged with laundering the

“commission” – as much as 25% of the value of sales. The alleged offences spanned three years and were the first cases to be brought under a 1908 Act of Parliament intended for that very purpose. At the time of trial, Seeley remained in USA and failed to appear. The Crown dropped the case against Porte in view of his previous service record and the fact that he was terminally ill – on the condition that he refunded the £38,000 he had pocketed in unlawful payments. Casson pleaded guilty to twelve of the twenty-six charges, was fined £6000 and his proceeds confiscated. Six thousand quid – in 1917! Using average earnings for comparison, that’s well over £1 million in today’s money. So, while 27 years old Captain Butler was risking his life on a daily basis in England and France,

flying primitive aircraft made of wood and cloth offering precious little protection from anything, a barrister was colluding with a salesman and senior Naval aviator to deprive the War Department, and war effort, of tens of thousands of pounds. Reporting was evidently suppressed at the time; the only comprehensive reports of the trial were carried in Flight and The Mount Ida Chronicle (NZ). Two column inches a month later in The Sydney Morning Herald exonerated Porte and incriminated only Casson. Risks taken by unsung heroes such as Charles Butler, then and now, pay for our security and freedom of speech. Continued corruption at high level in the public and private sectors and irresponsible behaviour by the media are shameful returns.
