“I’ll see you in Court!”
- not always the best first step. Come and see us in Ilkley and we can put you in the right direction.
You had a problem, but now you have worked out the answer. But someone else disagrees with you and you need to get them to agree, or at least comply. We can help you to do that! When you have a disagreement you do not necessarily need to go to court over it. There are lots of other ways to resolve a dispute that do not involve going to court, and it is important that you consider them and exhaust all possibilities before you decide to go to court. Judges do not like people taking disputes to court if they have not first tried to resolve it directly. So do not be in too much of a rush to go to court unless it is a real emergency. Resolving things directly with the person who disagrees is not always easy of course. Sometimes you cannot resolve the problem without their cooperation. For example if the disagreement is with a neighbour about where your boundary is, you might need to see their deeds, and they might prefer not to show you them, especially if they support your case. (Again, we can help you with that). But at least ask your neighbours, and do what you can to resolve as much as you can of your disagreement directly. Then even if you cannot agree completely in the end you will not be criticised for going to court too quickly. Then if and when you get to court, continue to be willing to work together with your opponent to reach an agreed solution. That way even if you fail and the court has to decide the dispute, you cannot be criticised. You have made the effort. Lawyers have what we call the ‘overriding objective’, which might be summarised in plain English as dealing with disputes fairly, not being too bothered abut technicalities, and keeping things in proportion. You stay focused on getting a reasonable resolution, either by judgement or negotiated settlement if the opportunity arises. Please call 01943 602 998 for legal advice from Steven Murgatroyd.

We’re now well into Spring and as I write this note heavy snow is falling. But, fifteen minutes ago the sun was shining, the sky blue and I was outside in just a shirt! I’m sure readers will join me in hoping for some consistent weather, preferably dry and sunny!

Speaking of consistency, Covered now reaches 45,000 households across much of Leeds and Ilkley – the highest single home distribution of any editorially led monthly in the area. We try not to reinvent the wheel each month but retain a familiar format – good hyper-local news, views and features complimented by advertising messages from reliable local companies. That said, we’re always keen to hear suggestions and ideas from readers and particularly from volunteer-led or community organisations that would benefit from some publicity. We can’t promise to feature everyone who contacts us, but we’ll try and bring you the best of the bunch. Any companies with a ‘story in their business’ should contact us too – we’re always interested to hear success stories and often include free editorial features for our clients.

A lasting friendship: Ilkley-Coutances Links between Ilkley and Coutances, in Normandy, go back some 60 years. Begun as an informal school exchange, the association rapidly widened to include clubs and organisations. Since 1969, the Ilkley-Coutances Town Twinning Committee has existed to foster these links with regular Civic visits. In the last couple of years, the Committee has taken on a new lease of life with an expanded membership, including Ilkley businesses, primary schools and interested individuals.
links, notably with a house exchange scheme – bound to be popular in the current climate!”
The Committee meets four times a year, in January, March, June and September. Secretary Catherine Cheater told Covered that she was amazed to find that many people were unaware that Ilkley had a twin town in France. “Please help us to remedy this! Coutances is a delightful town, with lots to offer. Our delegation was royally received two years ago, as was Ilkley Cycling Club in 2012 when they took part in a high-profile race. We are looking to develop
There is a visit to Coutances planned for 20-24 June 2013, coinciding with France’s Fête de la Musique, when music takes to the streets in the sort of popular celebration the French are so good at. Businesses, organisations and individuals are invited to contact Catherine for further details on 01943 603456 – and are more than welcome at the next Committee meeting on Thursday 21 March in the Council Chamber, Ilkley Town Hall.

Trackrod Motor Club Back in 1981, Alwoodley Community Association found itself with a number of rally enthusiasts. Leeds based, the group wanted to appeal to a wider Yorkshire audience. So, not wanting to adopt a local place name, Trackrod Motor Club was born. They now have a county wide membership of 120. Around a dozen compete in local, national and international amateur events. Around forty are marshals and several hold high office with the UK governing body of all motor sports – RAC Motor Sports Association. The club meets on Tuesdays. The first Tuesday of the month includes a committee meeting at Old Modernians Association clubhouse, Cookridge. Other Tuesdays are at various pubs. They are responsible for the organisation of two major events - Lookout Rally at Melbourne Airfield, York, (next 14 April) and a national rally, with an international field, staged between Pickering and Scarborough in September.

So, how much does it cost to compete? Rod Parkin, Whether curious competitor, wannabe marshal chairman; “Around £2000 can buy you a decent or simply a fan, Rod’s the man to contact on historical class vehicle, maybe something like a Ford 07850 783555.

LCC Litter and Dog Fouling Wardens – Pilot Scheme from April
7
Litter outside Pudsey Civic Hall in March –within twenty yards of a council bin and facing a large police station. Pudsey isn’t on LCC’s latest litter patrol hit list – should it be?
Leeds City Council recently announced a proposed six month pilot scheme where dedicated patrols are to be deployed in trial areas. Parts of Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Guiseley and Rawdon are likely to be included. LCC stated that these patrols are to be in addition to existing resources - presumably meaning police officers, PCSOs and Civil Enforcement Officers (aka traffic wardens) - and that the work is to be done by a private sector company. The company is to invoice LCC for each fixed penalty notice issued, LCC to recoup the cost on collection (of the £75). LCC has emphasised that they won’t be setting targets; “the objective is to raise the profile of such problems and attempt to improve behaviour locally”. Nonetheless, from April the company in question will have to issue a quantity of notices just to break even. With that in mind, Covered spoke to Keep Britain Tidy, one of the two agencies primarily behind the legislation (the other is DEFRA). A spokesperson told us; “We support such initiatives, particularly the educational element. Though I’m not personally aware of any schemes where the patrols have been privatised, so to speak. “The core pieces of legislation covering the two offences date back to the nineties though additional legislation also relates to the issue of fixed penalty notices. There is excellent guidance on the DEFRA website about the offences in question, the standard of evidence required and, in particular, when the issue of an FPN may or may not be appropriate.”
How right she was – though daunting at first glance, the 96 page leaflet PB12414 can be found online very easily and is indeed a plain English guide through the complexities. Covered has long supported readers’ sentiments about litter and dog fouling and hopes that LCC’s initiative will educate rather than alienate.

ILKLEY RUGBY CLUB Ilkley Rugby Club was officially founded in 1899, but there are references to rugby in Ilkley in 1870. Yorkshire Rugby County records show that an Ilkley member played for the County in 1873. The club moved to its present location in 1920. The new £1.6 million clubhouse opened in 2011. It boasts six changing rooms and a splendid bar and clubroom with panoramic views over Wharfedale and up to Ilkley moor. The outside terrace gives spectators arguably the best view of rugby in Yorkshire. The clubroom is available for hire for a range of events. There are some 600 members, with three senior teams in action each Saturday during the season.
The 1st XV play in Yorkshire Division 1 and are pushing for promotion into the North-East league. A large and thriving junior section meets on Sunday mornings. CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
“Reliability rides are weekly events testing both man and machine” – Bradford Olympic members David Holdsworth, Marie Jackson and Tony Wilde put our photographer in the picture.
Otley on Trial for Reliability Have you ever wondered why, when taking your usual Sunday afternoon drive, you unexpectedly encounter hundreds of cyclists? In little groups of maybe half a dozen similarly clad, though without event and number bibs. What are they all doing? I hope they’re not going to make a habit of it... Well, between assignments on 17 February, our photographer stumbled across one such group. Before they were setting out. Around 250 local club cyclists about to embark on either a 50 or 100 kilometre run. Start and finish at Otley Market Square via Chevin Cycles and cycling as far away as Kettlewell. What’s it all about? Three stalwarts from a Bradford Olympic cycling club explained; “This is a reliability trial – a noncompetitive event testing the reliability of both man (or woman) and machine. Around these parts of Yorkshire they’re weekly – though the individual venues and routes are always different. This is the first sunny Sunday since the two Yorkshire stages of Tour de France were announced and that’s why there’s a bumper turnout today. So, there’s your answer. And take note - sections of the first two stages of Le Tour 2014 (Leeds-Harrogate and York-Sheffield) are going to attract international interest both before and after Le Tour itself.

Strummers wanted Otley’s New in Ilkley! Chippendale Market Alyson Evans comes from a musical background and has played the violin for many years. She played the ukulele a little in her youth and took it up again three years ago when the Baildon Ukulele Club started. She really enjoyed developing her skills and decided to have a go at arranging music for a ukulele band. She wanted to bring together musicians of different levels of ability; the less skilled could strum the basic chords while others could pick or use chords higher up the instrument or develop other possibilities. The idea was for the whole to sound cohesive, like a big band. Advertising for players, Alyson found people ringing up to ask if the group was suitable for beginners. It wasn’t – you really need to know a few chords. But hey, a beginners’ group would train up players for the band, wouldn’t it? And there we have it: the band meets on Saturday mornings, 10.30-12.30 and the beginners meet on Monday night 7pm-9pm, both at the Manor House Museum in Ilkley. Alyson has taken on quite a commitment but is finding it all enjoyable and exciting.
In January a group of architects practising in Otley Old Grammar School decided to put some spare space to use by allowing it to become an art gallery. Zak Whitehead, the gallery’s events manager, decided to put it to further use when in on 24 February he opened their first art, crafts and local produce market. The decision to stage it on the last Sunday of the month was quite deliberate – to complement rather than compete with Otley Farmers’ Market (see last issue of Covered). The gallery is to be put to even further use from 24 March, when it will host the first of a monthly series of tutored life drawing classes – likely to run on the first Sunday of the month thereafter. Contact Zak on 07950 383443.
And, as she told Covered, more players are needed, please! So if you have always meant to get strumming, now is your chance. Ilkley celebrates International Women’s Day International Women's Day grew from protests in US about women’s rights and working conditions in the early years of the 19th century. Now fixed at 8 March each year, it has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. In many, it is a public holiday. The United Nations holds an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women's rights and participation in social, political and economic processes. IWD has a lower profile in UK than in the rest of Europe, but two events in Ilkley marked the occasion. The Aspiring Women’s Network met at Clevedon on 7 March to hear Jennifer Holloway explain her strategy of “personal branding”. Studies have shown that it takes exactly 7 seconds for a new acquaintance to sum you up – and that first impression is lasting. So, Jennifer told her audience, make sure you decide what message you want to get across. Everything counts: facial expression, handshake, eye contact and yes, ladies, the handbag, the shoes and the car you drive… Ilkley Soroptimists “Her Ambition” event was on 8 March, at Ilkley Rugby Club. A panel of women successful in business or professional careers provided inspiration for others. Rachel Feldberg, Director of Ilkley Literature Festival, Suzanne Johns, MD of Approach PR, litigation lawyer April Chamberlain and marketing executive Caroline Shaw spoke frankly about the challenges they faced. At both events, a lively Q&A session ensued.

The Cheerful Chilli is a restaurant and tearooms on the East Chevin Road in Otley. Opened in 1999, and previously known as The Ramblers’ tearooms, it is situated in a converted farmhouse and is full of character, with a relaxed atmosphere, fresh flowers and an eclectic mix of work by local artists on the walls. The emphasis here is all about the imaginative menu and the ethos of food bringing people together to have a good time whilst sharing wholesome, home-cooked food.
The Cheerful Chilli Owner and chef David Longfield is passionate that every dish is freshly prepared, even the bread, with the focus being on flavoursome, good value food and the generous portions certainly represent that. The fact that the menu is entirely vegetarian almost seems like an aside, with the majority of customers being meat eaters, simply keen to enjoy the flavoursome and satisfying menu. Having said that, David is personally very aware of the needs of vegetarian and vegan diners and is keen to cater for everyone. He and his team are happy to discuss and create dishes with any dietary requirement in mind. The restaurant menu fuses influences from around the world to create something to suit everyone’s taste. Popular dishes are sweetcorn cakes as a starter, and enchiladas or aubergine involtini for main dishes. Puddings range from a beautiful selection of homemade ice creams to the decadent chocolate nemesis, which is described as not for the faint hearted! Another popular feature is the banquet menu, which is available for 4 or more diners, and is ideal for parties and larger groups. Private dining for up to 80 people can be catered for at The Cheerful Chilli, with customers encouraged to make the venue their own for the evening by bringing their own music, wine, and even decorations. In keeping with the ‘good value’ ethic, The Cheerful Chilli welcomes guests who bring their own drinks and charges £1 corkage, or a new wine and beer menu was also introduced last year offering a good selection of drinks, all suitable for vegetarians.

“As the sign says, everything at The Cheerful Chilli really is made with love”
For the tearooms the menu differs and changes weekly, but generally offers a selection of tarts and sandwiches, as well as a few popular restaurant dishes, and a wide range of cakes and desserts, all of which can be purchased whole to take away. The Cheerful Chilli are popular traders at local farmers’ markets, and also provide outside catering for any event as well as seasonal products to take away; picnic hampers for a summer ramble on the Chevin, or in the outside courtyard, and Christmas puddings and nut roasts later in the year. The future is looking bright too with plans to convert the neighbouring barn by autumn this year. Accessed from the same courtyard, this additional venue will include a second kitchen and large banqueting room with mezzanine floor above, and will be available to cater for larger parties and also to introduce cookery lessons. It’s looking like David and his team will certainly be busy, but with their laid-back yet attentive style, I’m sure they’ll manage just fine. As the sign says, everything at The Cheerful Chilli really is “ made with love”. For more details visit www.thecheerfulchilli.co.uk, or they can be found on Facebook and Twitter @CheerfulChilli

Blind bake 6 pastry cases in 4 inch tart cases for 5-10 minutes. Fill with cooked red onion mixture before placing a generous slice of goats’ cheese on top. Blend the olive oil with the basil and drizzle on the tarts. Bake for further 15 minutes at 180 degrees Celsius. Serve with fresh salad.
Dessert
250ml Stout 250g unsalted butter 75g cocoa 400g caster sugar 150 ml pot natural yoghurt 2 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 275g plain flour 2 ½ teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 300g cream cheese 150g icing sugar 125ml double or whipping cream
Chocolate Guinness Cake Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius, and butter and line a 23cm springform tin. Pour the Stout into a large saucepan, add the butter and heat until the butter is melted, at which time you should whisk in the cocoa and sugar. In a bowl, beat the yoghurt with the eggs and vanilla and then pour into the beery, buttery pan and finally whisk in the flour and bicarbonate. Pour the cake batter into the greased and lined tin and bake for 45 minutes to an hour. Leave to cool completely in the tin on a cooling rack before icing. To make icing, lightly whip the cream and the cheese together until smooth. Sieve over the icing sugar and then beat them both together. Ice the top of the black cake so that it resembles the frothy top of the fantastic pint of beer.

5 Tips to Get on Your Bike Inspired by Victoria Pendleton, Wiggo, David Stone and the Brownlees, have you used the bike as much as you planned over the Winter? As Spring has sprung, here’s a few tips to get you back in the saddle.
1
Give Your Bike a 30 Second Check
Check your tyres are properly inflated and that any quick release mechanisms are holding the wheels in place. A properly inflated tyre can take some considerable effort out of cycling and reduce the risk of punctures. Check the brakes are squeezing the tyres enough and that the brake pads are hitting the rim of the wheel, not the tyre, enabling for a gentler more controlled stop. Hopefully the saddle and handle bars are set at the right height but if not there can easily be adjusted with a small spanner. Is your helmet secure? Don’t wear it too high as you want to ensure that your forehead is protected whilst if you tip your head forward do you feel any movement?
Last check, as you set off is to make sure that the chain is going through the cogs and derailleurs without catching and that you’re able to go through the gears without slippage.
2
Ease Yourself Back
Although they say no-one ever forgets how to ride a bike, if it’s been a while your muscles may have forgotten the effort required at times so don’t set off on a 10 mile route straight away. Plan a short ride out or even ease yourself back in on an exercise bikes or anyone can book in for a Spin bike session at Horsforth’s Trinity Fitness before hitting the road.
3
Plan Your Route
The best routes for cycling are not always obvious. Leeds City Council have produced some excellent cycling maps for the city including North and North West Leeds. These make cycling easier, safer and more pleasant. Get a copy free of charge from the Gateway Information Centre at Leeds City station.

Ride as if You Are Invisible
Even in florescent clothing it can be difficult for drivers to see you. Ride as if you are invisible anticipating cars misjudging your speed or signalling without notice. In particular never edge up on the inside of a vehicle at a junction as the driver is unlikely to be aware you are there. Ride about 1 metre from the kerb and be prepared for obstructions in the road.
5
Ride to Your Own Pace and Ability
Finally, unless you are preparing for 2014’s arrival of the Tour De France, it’s not a race. Ride to your own ability and take a break and enjoy what you’ve achieved. Sponsored by Trinity Fitness Sports Centre Tel: 0113 283 7155, www.trinityfitness.co.uk

Remember the Deaf Granny Most children love a lie in on a Saturday with a bit of TV but as a parent you probably worry that they should be getting out the house more - getting kids interested in anything apart from DVDs and video games can be difficult. Well, Covered has discovered that there are children who are not only happy to give up their Saturday morning at home and mix with kids of all ages, they do it voluntarily. So, we dragged student writer John Gledhill out of bed and away from his cereal on a cold Saturday morning, to find out just exactly what kind of magic Leeds Children’s Theatre (LCT) is performing and who is this deaf granny?! ‘The deaf granny is a way of getting them to remember to project’, smiles senior LCT member Judith Unwin as we sit to the side watching a group of kids performing. ‘I’m the deaf granny and I’m sat at the back of the theatre – if they don’t project I can’t hear what they’re saying on stage so how will an audience?’ ‘Deaf granny!’ she calls out to one child who mumbles her lines; both Covered and the younger member have a twinkle our eyes – LCT is an amusing place. Ask Judith what her official title is and she’ll tell you: ‘we don’t have titles’. Indeed, younger member, Sarah, 14, from Bramley, tells us she likes LCT ‘because staff are not like teachers and I feel more confident here, I get to learn something new and be creative’.
Based in the Carriageworks Theatre in Millennium Square, LCT has been going since 1935. Famous names to have passed through include John Craven, Angela Griffin and the legendary Peter O’Toole! However, while some children do go on to study drama, member Janine Walker, 32, says ‘it’s not the aim to become famous, but to enjoy it [theatre]. The Children are not always confident when they first come but eventually begin to experience a different side to themselves in a very safe space’. The workshop is a series of exercises which are hugely entertaining thanks to their improvisational nature. LCT member Ian Goodison – a school drama teacher - notes proudly ‘we are the only theatre where children don’t have prompts – they must get themselves out of it if they forget their lines’. Covered witnessed kids jumping in to help out their fellow members whose minds had gone blank. Such a display of togetherness and communal support seems to be the ethos of LCT where members range from seven to seventy! Covered is going to remember the deaf granny and tell you this loudly: LCT receives no funding. All members and staff volunteer their services and are not paid. They put on two plays a year, which they promote themselves to raise money to keep going. To support them all you have to do is to buy a ticket to their show and enjoy yourself. The next one is Jacqueline Wilson’s The Lottie Project from Tues 16 – Sun 21 April.

Brassneck’s Whistle Down The Wind Yeadon based BrassNeck Theatre always offer exciting and innovative productions and 2012 was no exception. Following on from sell-out performances of ‘The Full Monty’, ‘Calendar Girls’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof ’ at Yeadon Town Hall, members and the production team allowed themselves a short Christmas rest before beginning rehearsals for the fabulous Andrew Lloyd-Webber musical ‘Whistle down the Wind’. The story centres round a deeply religious community where Swallow, a fifteen year old girl struggling with her beliefs and the death of her mother discovers a mystery man hiding in the barn. As he utters the words ‘Jesus Christ’, Swallow is convinced that he is indeed Jesus and is an answer to her prayers. She and the other town children endeavour to keep his identity a
secret from the adults. A very talented cast includes an outstanding junior company and their performance of ‘Long overdue for a miracle’ and ‘ When children rule the world’ will delight audiences. As you experience the classic ‘No matter what’ made famous by Boyzone and the title song ‘Whistle down the wind’ plus many other memorable songs, you will be captivated by this superb piece of musical theatre. ...but it doesn’t end there! BrassNeck Theatre is very excited to have been given the rights, by invitation, to perform the multi-award winning musical ‘Avenue Q ‘ from 12 - 16 November, so put the date in your diary. Book now: Whistle down the Wind at Yeadon Town Hall from 15 – 18 May 2013. Evenings at 7.30pm plus Saturday matinee at 2.30pm. Now is the time to trim and tidy Buddleia
split them after flowering and replant to the same depth in another part of the garden. Summer flowering corms of gladioli and lily roots may be planted at the end of this month, together with the many other varieties currently available in the shops. With spring officially started and the days lengthening, we are looking forward to better weather to come – in order to start sowing seeds and planting out to bring the garden to life. This has been a very wet winter, which means a large percentage of the nutrients in the soil will have been washed away. It will be advisable to spread fertilizers and mulches, to every part of the garden as the soil starts to warm up. On frost free days prune your roses, hybrid teas harder then floribundas, and tie in your climbers after cutting out old the old stems. Ensure all old leaves and stems are removed, to reduce the risk of black spot and other diseases remaining on the soil. Then apply a rose fertilizer around the base of each plant, adding a mulch if available. Other perennials, including buddleia may also be trimmed and tided, adding a general fertilizer to boost their performance. Spring bulbs are looking their best at the moment, and again remember to feed them as the flowers go over – to build up the bulbs for next year. If you have large clumps of snowdrops, and other bulbs,
It is not too early to plan and sow your herb bed, in pots or in the garden. Parsley, marjoram, chives etc, tidying up the mint which always strays. PROPERTY MATTERS Landlords will be left counting the cost of having empty properties in their portfolio when a shakeup in the way council tax is charged comes into force next month.
