UK Energy Store Opens in Rawdon The UK Energy Store recently opened its first retail outlet on Leeds Road in Rawdon with a promise to reduce the amount of energy we all waste in our homes and businesses. With energy prices expected to increase by over 70% in the coming years, UK Energy Store’s services are already in great demand.
Leeds City Council Digs Itself Into a Deeper Rut in Woodside In the last issue of Covered we highlighted the plight of Woodside resident Katina Georgiou. Mrs Georgiou had written to Leeds City Council about the litter and unsightly series of ruts in the verges in Lickless Drive. The ruts were so deep we were moved to include “trench warfare” in the heading. But it wasn’t only about the ruts themselves. Mrs Georgiou had written to LCC in February and received their standard letter; “We’ll reply in fifteen days”. Despite a reminder, Mrs Georgiou still hadn’t had a reply by the end of March. So she contacted us.
But they did say “We apologise that Mrs Georgiou did not receive the level of service she should have done. Our aim is to respond to complaints within three weeks. On this occasion council officers took action to address the issues raised, but we did not confirm this with Mrs Georgiou. "We would encourage any resident who has not received an appropriate response within this timeframe to either contact the complaints officer involved or call the council’s customer relations line on Leeds 222 4405.” Well done Councillor Cleasby! Covered is letting the matter rest there only because Brian Cleasby promptly ascertained, and let Mrs Georgiou know, what action had already been taken and what might be happening within the next 11 months.
But it is a fact that, having already reminded LCC of her complaints, Mrs Georgiou received answers only after contacting the local media and, in turn, her Contacting LCC on 6 April, copying in Councillor local councillor. The ineptitude and apparent lack of Brian Cleasby, we asked LCC what was happening accountability of LCC does make you wonder whether and, perhaps more importantly, what LCC residents we should have voted to have an elected Mayor. could do when the three weeks were up. Covered would just love to hear about any similar LCC contacted us on 11 May. They gave no details problems readers have had, or are having, with or confirmation of any of the action being taken. Leeds City Council…
“Most of us realise that energy bills are increasing faster than ever and we all accept that we need to save energy and reduce our consumption”, said Head Surveyor Martin Greenwood, who has seen a huge shift in how home owners and businesses look at their energy usage. “Working as surveyors and energy consultants we were getting more and more requests from industry to help reduce their energy spend and make them more efficient. We opened our retail unit to enable domestic users to take advantage of the different technologies that big business has been using for years and reducing their consumption by up to 32%. “Everyone knows that just to stand still you have to switch suppliers regularly and this service is available on our website for domestic and commercial clients. However the vast array of tariffs is confusing and you can never be sure you are getting the best deal. That’s why we offer the personal touch, we aim to guide our clients through our experience and expertise, showing them how to save energy, reduce what they use and ensure they are on the most economical tariff available, and in control of what they physically use”. As an opening offer, UK Energy Store is offering home owners and small businesses a free energy survey which will show how you can reduce your energy use, and save money – whether this is through optimising your supplies, considering solar panels or wind turbines as viable options, or installing free cavity wall or loft insulation. In recent months Covered has reported our local NPT’s initiatives to encourage sensible parking and keeping within the speed limit around schools, and to frustrate car number plate theft, bicycle theft and burglary. On Saturday 12 May, in Morrison’s Horsforth, the latest crime being addressed was purse snatching – or, as is more frequently the case, purses being quietly “dipped” from handbags and shopping bags while the shopper isn’t looking. The obvious precaution is to make sure that purses are out of the sight and reach of opportunist thieves. But, just in case, PCSOs Julie Richardson and Stefan Rushworth were in Morrison’s Horsforth on the Saturday morning offering help and advice – and some strong but light security chains (pictured). Also there was Horsforth Town Council’s Deputy Charmain, and Chairman of Public Safety and Traffic Committee, Ian Scott – HTC provided the funding for the chains, of which around 250 were gratefully received.
The event was unfortunately under populated with only a handful of people taking advantage of the free stamping. Sadly, but inevitably, some readers are going to regret they did not. Anyway, for more information on how you can get your bike or scooters stamped then look out for future event dates in Covered.

Sweet Shop 60 Town Street, Horsforth
(Photo: Ivor Hughes) Gas mains works forced many residents onto Tinshill Lane in April – here four adjacent driveways blocked on a Sunday.
Rail Works at Horsforth Station - Round Two
In our last issue we criticised Network Rail’s delayed and partial response to our enquiry about how residents, commuters and business outside the station’s 100 metre zone might get a copy of the letter issued to those within, outlining the disruption - and how they might subscribe to any updates. On 25 April Network Rail apologised for the helpline system being down when we called, indicating that more prompt and complete responses should be the norm. They said it was not their policy to drop outside the 100 metre zone but that updates may be received via their 24 hour National Helpline (ie call centre) number 08457 11 41 41. There is no plan to put updates online – other than revisions to timetables. Sussex Avenue Since then, Network Rail has concluded that some items are too heavy to pass over the drainage system under the car park. They have therefore decided that they need to use Sussex Avenue on a one-off basis. Councillor Barry Anderson has informed Covered that LCC has sought assurances from Network Rail, including direct discussion and liaison with residents. Good luck or good management? Northern Rail announced the loss of around 15 spaces in the car park (to preserve access for heavy machinery) by way of leaflets in the Horsforth ticket office and leafleting a number of cars. But no posters. The loss was to be from 19 April and for around six months. Meanwhile, up Tinshill Lane, there were major works on gas mains all along the right hand side, uphill. Many residents’ drives were blocked, forcing them to park on the verges or road itself. Alongside the works vehicles
Emmerdale on Town Street
An Emmerdale film crew was spotted in Town Street at the same time the story of Reverend Ashley Thomas abusing his father, Sandy, was breaking. Given the lead time between filming and broadcasting, you have to wonder what Ashley’s wife Laurel (Charlotte Bellamy) was doing in Mega Burger. Or had the burger bar been transformed into something quite different by the scenery people? Some commuters found ways round the barriers in Horsforth Station car park on 20 April. (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
and machinery, all of which threatened to force further uphill some of the extra 15 commuters that would soon be looking for somewhere to park. Late arrival of Network Rail’s barriers and earlier completion of the gas mains work towards the bottom of Tinshill Lane averted chaos – although there were times when large vehicles were unable to pass higher up. Covered is waiting to hear whether this dovetailing was good management by LCC Highways or just a fluke. We stand corrected! In the last issue we inadvertently referred to Railtrack. Network Rail, their present incarnation, advised us that Railtrack ceased trading in 2002.
Charlotte Bellamy is seen here taking a break, holding court in the doorway of The Sweet Shop – and before the crew was due to start filming outside.

Roadside Light Shines at The Grey Horse
Though all too young to drink at The Grey Horse, Horsforth, the four piece band Roadside Light demonstrated on the evening of 21 April that they clearly weren’t too young to rock it. Drums (Scott Greaves) and bass (Eddie Hyndes) were tight, leaving plenty of room for Keri Cromack (vocals) and Thomas Brown Bridge (lead) to add their touches. Their first set included a lot of original material which, sadly, we missed. But we did see the band set the room alight with their second set – mainly covers of soft rock numbers from the past forty years. Keri Cromack showed remarkable range, depth and vocal maturity – and volume - with the band’s cover of Kings of Leon’s Sex on Fire. Maybe not the easiest number for the youngsters to thump out with so many parents and grandparents in the audience...

Aireborough Historical Society Librarian and member Christine Coverdale in AHS’ room in Yeadon Town Hall, categorising documents due to be added to the society’s digital archives. (Photo: Ivor Hughes)
With sixty members, Aireborough Historical Society has a history of its own. Formed in 1957, as Aireborough & Horsforth Museum Society, the group adopted their present name in 2004. Their original plan, under their first President - Councillor Mrs E M Holdsworth JP - was to collect artefacts relating to the history of Aireborough and Horsforth. But it become impossible to find storage space at a reasonable price, so only paper was collected; books, maps, documents and the like. AHS has recently found a member with the skills necessary to build a website. He has just set up a page on facebook, a preliminary move. Secretary Nina Wintle; “The response to facebook has been astonishing – within a week of being set up, replies were being received from around the world!” The society has three tiers of meetings. On Monday afternoons, members meet in Yeadon Town Hall to research, categorise and archive the documents now held. They also meet monthly, usually on the second Thursday evening at Guiseley Methodist Church. There, from September to April, guest speakers enlighten members about local history and its characters. Then there are annual outings – this year a weekend in Edinburgh (earlier this month) and a forthcoming trip to Beamish on 14 June.

A Taste of Matters Yachting at Yeadon Tarn Local
St James Woodside Wedding Fair
Leeds City Council’s policy of access and inclusion was in full sail on the afternoon of Tuesday 24 April when twenty-four learners with mixed disabilities participated in a disability taster day at Yeadon Tarn – two in each of three boats and over four sessions. Those who got the bug, and anyone interested but didn’t get the chance, were invited to participate in a special series of six lessons on Tuesdays, 4-5 in term time, starting on 8 May. Leeds Disability Sailing & Canoeing Club is funded by Sportivate, National Lottery, Sport England and Leeds CC, enabling the sessions to be subsidised to £1 – for any person aged up to 25 and with a disability. Places are limited, though the centre will welcome enquiries from anyone wishing to know if any have become available. Enquiries about these courses, and all other courses and boating facilities at Yeadon Tarn, to Gill Newman on 0113 2503616 and sailingcentre@leeds.gov.uk
Yeadon Tarn’s yachting and canoeing facilities are best known by the large number of schools groups using them during term time. Here are regular instructors Adam-Peter, Jonathan and Kathryn. Most of their work for Leeds CC Learning & Leisure Department (Sport & Active Recreation) is on the water at Yeadon Tarn, though they also teach and supervise a wide range of outdoor activities. (Photos: Ivor Hughes)
The next monthly meeting is on 13 September, when Mary Twentyman will be talking about the history of Judy Woods of Bradford. Secretary Nina Wintle - 0113 2504493 and wintwalk@aol.com

St James’ first wedding fair was on the uncharacteristically sunny afternoon of Sunday 6 May. And what a delight it was. A genuine church wedding fair, rather than a high pressure commercial Wedding Fayre, it was part of the church’s ongoing efforts to communicate with the community as a whole, not only their regular congregation. With stands attractively priced at around £30 each, and free entry and wine or soft drinks on arrival, it presented an excellent opportunity for small local businesses to communicate with local people. And, of course, to enable couples to sound out St James as a possible venue. The church looks forward to organising a similar event next year. The venue was close to capacity this time round with twelve businesses represented. So anyone hoping to be represented in 2013 will need to be quick off the mark.

Leeds has developed its “Leeds Gold” newsletter to keep residents up to date with the city’s involvement in the Olympics. I took this issue up and was advised that there are no plans to enhance the current No. 31 service. In order to gauge whether or not there would be support for this enhanced service, can you let me have your thoughts on the following questions. 1. Do you think there are at least 6 people who would use this service on a daily basis so that all buses meet the “at least 6” criteria? 2. How often do you think the service should run i.e. the frequency and which days? 3. Between which times should it operate? The reason for asking the questions is so that I can go back and try and get First or Metro to produce a business case. Cllr. Barry Anderson Adel & Wharfedale Ward barryanderson.yourcllr.com

Local Matters
The recent local elections and London Mayoral election have kept Parliamentarians busy over the past few weeks, myself included, as many parts of the country took to the polling booths on 3rd May. Local Councillors of all parties work hard to help their communities and assist individuals who are in need of help and living in their Wards. I was therefore pleased to have been able to support several incumbent and challenger candidates with their election campaigns in their wards and know firsthand of the excellent work they do every day for their constituents. I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all those who won their seats. I know only too well how much effort and dedication goes into an election campaign and it is huge achievement for all involved. It is impossible to ignore the disappointing result for the Government in these elections and there are certainly lessons to be learned here in Parliament. We are in the middle of the worst recession in many years and the Government is trying to introduce policies under an austerity budget. Of course it is understandable that voters have protested at the polling stations and shown Parliament how unhappy they are at present. It is the duty of politicians to now learn from this and listen.

CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
Bluebird Care Pudsey Grangefield danced “Music Mash Up” – an ironic title to their act as their first attempt was frustrated by the music failing to start on relocation of the competition from the main hall to the school gym.
Leeds Dance Final at Horsforth School
Demographically not only is the population of the country ageing but average life expectancy has risen dramatically. Hence some people who need care may require support for 5, 10, 20 years or more. However, just because one day you are unable to tie your own shoe laces does not mean that you need to go into some kind of residential care. Sometimes just a little bit of help can dramatically improve a person’s quality of life and enable them to maintain their independence and continue to live interesting lives in the comfort and familiarity of their own home.
The final round of City of Leeds KS4 Dance Festival was held at Horsforth School on 26 April. The show must go on… Ten dance troupes from years 10 and 11 of nine different schools from across the Leeds area made it to the final round of Leeds School Sport Partnership Dance Festival 2012. On the stage in the school’s main hall, the competition came to an abrupt halt when third team up, Woodkirk Academy (Tingley), had to stop their routine when one of their dancers fell with a suspected dislocated knee. The hall was cleared of pupils, some evidently distressed by the accident, while the dancer awaited treatment and evacuation to Leeds General Infirmary.
Care at home normally involves one or more visits a day for relatively short periods, possibly up to an hour, to help with everyday tasks of life. Longer duration visits are often available including overnight help or even live-in care. With Local Authority budgets being squeezed many people have to fund their own care. David Brown Director of Bluebird Care in North Leeds said “Not only are people seeking the best quality care for themselves or a loved one but they need to know they are getting value for money. That’s why Bluebird Care has been so successful – we give people what they want. We will only deliver care to a standard that we would be happy for a member of our own family to receive.”
With the agreement of all teams, the competition resumed some thirty minutes later in the school gym – not quite as inspiring as the main stage. Woodkirk, to universal support and applause, had been rescheduled as last in line in order to give them time to settle. Their victory in the competition, announced minutes later, wasn’t a sympathy vote from the three judges. Far from it. The troupe, sometimes dancing in three sub-groups, danced well both individually and in harmony. And, most importantly, in time.
Care is an emotive subject and the way it is funded, accessed and delivered is increasingly a matter of public discussion in the papers, on the TV or radio and on the internet. In a society where the extended family is no longer the main vehicle for delivering care, particularly for older people, it is something that we all need to address.
Winners Kirkgate Academy, minus one. The victory gave their injured dancer some cause for cheer – the troupe made sure that her winner’s medal was in safe keeping. (Photos: Ivor Hughes)
We may all require some kind of care at some point in our lives. It is a fundamental right that it is provided in a way that promotes independence and ensures dignity and respect for the individual concerned – you, me, anyone!

My evening visits with my dogs are a different matter, not because of ‘hoodies’ but because it seems that the park is now being used as a training ground by groups of fitness instructors.

This is the month where everything springs into action, the fruit trees blossom, seeds start germinating, and the grass grows longer every day.
Roses, dahlias and chrysanthemums, delphiniums and others are always are always going to attract insects, due to their succulent and attractive foliage. Be Happy Today!
Are you an inspirational Local lady? Do you know of a local woman of achievement? Maybe you’ve set up a successful club or society, or grasped a challenge with both hands. We’re looking for Local Ladies with a story to feature in future editions of Covered so please let us know your story!
Have you ever noticed that what you give out you get back? If you give out angry words or actions that’s usually what you get back in return! If you wake up in a bad mood it’s likely that your day will continue that way. But if you smile you’re likely to receive a smile back. If you say thank you, you will get appreciation back. If you wake up and decide today is going to be a great day - guess what? It WILL be a great day! You are in control of your life and what happens to you. It might not seem like that. But it’s true. Just try it tomorrow. Decide that for a whole day you are going to be happy. To smile at everyone, to say thank you not only for what you receive but also for what you already have - we are so busy wanting other things that we forget to appreciate those we already have. Say thank you all day. Do something for someone, even if it’s just holding a door open for them. Act from your heart not from your head. And see how amazing your day turns out to be! The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the trade body that represents the nation’s fish and chip shops, runs the scheme as a way of raising standards within the fish and chip trade and enhancing the profile of the industry. The scheme is a way of rewarding and promoting shops that provide good quality products and high standards of hygiene, as well as friers who show a high level of competence. To qualify, each shop has to go through an inspection by an NFFF Approved Assessor who assesses the shop’s presentation, hygiene and cleanliness, staff training, equipment, frying and sales skills and most importantly the quality of the cooked product.

Jublee Time in Horsforth
As we await the Spring Decisions from the “In Bloom” judges, we are all fortunate to enjoy the colourful offerings from the Spring and Summer baskets. These are due to the hard work of the Environment Committee who kept their budget within the strict financial limits needed at this time. The work in the garden area outside the library, to be “The Diamond Jubilee Garden”, is due to be completed in the near future. Horsforth will then be able to see the Mosaic, begun by our young people at the Activity Day in Hall Park. Completing the garden will also bring to an end, the first phase of the strategically placed seating in Horsforth. The Council also remind residents that your ideas are needed “to help us to help you”, as the Council moves towards applying for Quality Council Status and the extra responsibilities this will bring. The Diamond Jubilee Committee is busy putting together the finishing touches for the June 4th events in Horsforth Hall Park. The Committee still welcomes sponsors and volunteers to help the Anniversary be “fit for a Queen”! Events will begin at 3pm with various entertainers, picnics(bring your own), cakes and soft drinks. There will also be several food concessions. The evening will bring Disco Music and about 10.15pm, once we have the signal, the Bonfire Beacon will be lit. A big “Thank You” to everyone involved in the many projects that the Council has worked on during the past year – The HMS Aubretia Celebration, The Queen’s Jubilee, the Autumn & Spring flower baskets and the extra seating to name a few. Covered Writer Jake Completes London Marathon
Aireborough RUFC
A mention that our very own Sports Writer- Jake Harvey - completed the Virgin London Marathon last month in a respectable 4 hours 37 minutes and 7 seconds as he ran for the charity Whizz Kidz.
Rugby Union side Aireborough ended the season rampantly as they battered Old Rishworthian 59-15 at home to cement a 4th place finish in the Yorkshire Division Three table.
Jake said of the feat; “It was a phenomenal experience and I’m delighted with the time too. It was my first marathon and my aim was probably to be around the 5 hour mark - so to knock 23 minutes off that was incredible. I must say though, it feels quite embarrassing to be over taken by a rhino and two blokes dressed as a pantomime horse! And it was only at around 20 miles that I overtook a Womble!” Our writer added; “The London Marathon’s an incredible event on the UK calendar but to run it in a year which will be marked with the London 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as well makes it extra special.” The marathon itself was somewhat tarnished with the news that Samaritans runner, Claire Squires, 30, unfortunately passed away in the final mile of the race. Jake said of the incident, “It’s incredibly sad to hear that Claire died, I saw a girl next to me on the home stretch fall backwards, I alerted the St John’s Ambulance crew, I just hope it wasn’t the same girl. It’s such a shame, 30 is no real age is it.”

(Photo: Carol Russell)
Jake is continuing to raise money for the charity Whizz Kidz, who help to improve the lives of disabled children in the UK and would be eternally grateful for donations as he looks to raise £1,600. “Whizz Kidz is such a fantastic charity and are unbelievable at what they do to help move lives forward for disabled kids.” He also asked us to thank everybody who e-mailed in advice and tips prior to the marathon, “It was great to get so much feedback and tips from readers, I hope they do keep in contact.” You can help by pledging on justgiving.com/ Jake-Harvey2 and support Covered’s sports writer following his efforts in the marathon.
Aireborough were narrowly pipped to 3rd by an impressive Baildon side that finished one point above them following an incredible 18 game winning streak. Baildon flourished with a final day 13-10 win over 2nd placed Sheffield Medics, a side who scrapped to a 1614 win over Aireborough in the penultimate match of the season. A 4th placed finish this campaign has seen the side improve on last year’s efforts where they ended 5th and with 13 points fewer than they managed this time around. Aireborough’s highest winning margin of the season was an astonishing 71-7 pummelling away at strugglers York Railway Institute, while their largest defeat was a 22-0 loss at crowned champions Roundhegians in the only match all season that Borough failed to rack up any points. As for next season, Aireborough will be hoping to push for a top two finish and promotion to the Yorkshire Division Two as they look to climb up the local leagues.
E-mail - Jake@klassit.com Nonetheless, they powered themselves through to the Leeds Schools Cup final on 2 May at South Leeds Stadium. There they went down 1-2, to Garforth in a closely contested match. Izzy Wheeler scored Horsforth’s only goal. The team is pictured with coach Julie Richardson – perhaps more familiar to the community in her PCSO uniform ...

Old Modernians
Season round-up
Old Mods RUFC finished the season with back-toback wins as they put to bed the disastrous start of the season to finish 10th of 14 in the Yorkshire Division Three table. Modernians stumbled out of the blocks when the season began back in September and won just two of their opening 13 matches to leave them stranded at the bottom of the league. However, a revitalised and somewhat rejuvenate Mods returned to action in the New Year and showed their true ability by winning seven of their last 11 to keep them safe from relegation. The Mods will be desperate to keep the momentum flowing into the 2012/13 campaign and be hoping for far better success than they endured last September where they lost 40-5 to Roundhegians in the opening month.
Horsforth CC Back at the Crease
It's been a damp start to the new season for Horsforth CC with a number of senior and junior matches being rained off in the first few weeks. In between the showers, the Horsforth First Team have made a steady start with an excellent opening day win against Alwoodley, followed by a rainaffected draw and defeat. Among the individual highlights so far has been a hat-trick by bowler Ian Stephens against Tong Park Esholt. Sadly, the Seconds and Thirds have yet to register their first wins of the season. But new captains Chris Baker for the Seconds, and Sarah Brown for the Thirds, are looking forward to results picking up in the coming weeks. Just prior to the start of the outdoor season, Horsforth was crowned kings of indoor cricket winning the Leeds Last Man Stands Champion of Champions tournament. Off the field, the club is continuing to work hard to raise funds to build their new clubhouse, with many events planned throughout the year. Log on to pitchero.com/clubs/horsforthcricketclub for more details or follow them on Twitter @ HorsforthCC for regular news and score updates from every game throughout the season.

A proud Yorkshireman, Atkins revealed he loves playing for his county, “Born and bred here, I’m Yorkshire through and through!” Atkins also reminisced of getting his call-up for England; “I remember answering the phone at home and having a little tear in my eye when they gave me the news.” As for The Assassins’ future, he still has high hopes to win the Lakeside World Title and have a televised nine-dart 501, for his Dad to watch from home. Despite the success that Martin has already enjoyed it was clear his love for the game remained, “On average I’ll practice two hours a day, I’m really looking forward to the Welsh Open (May 17-20). I’ve played well there in recent years.” Martin started playing darts when he worked at Meanwood Club
Martin with James Wilson, fellow Yorkshire and England player, and the British Inter Counties Championship trophy
as a teenager years and was introduced to the Super League of darts by Steve Worsnop - which led to the chance of representing Yorkshire. Some of Martin’s most memorable victories include beating the formidable Raymond ‘Barney’ Van Barneveld on three successive occasions live on TV, including a 3-0 win on the last occasion. And for any up and coming or amateur darts players the incredibly modest and likeable Assassin’s advice was, “You only get out what you put it, push yourself to be the best and most of all be sporting and gracious in victory and defeat.”

In stark contrast though, Mods turned their season around and even saved their biggest win for the end where they beat Halifax Vandals 46-21 in the penultimate match before edging York Railway 18-5 on the last day.
