SID’S ON THE SLITHER AND WE WANT HIM BACK!
Liz Burton Dawn Kilner Ivor Hughes vicky kulczycka Eric Wells Hello and welcome to this month’s edition of Covered. Things are hotting up for the summer which means we’ve plenty of outdoor activities to attend, support and report. We’re usually the only ‘community’ publication at these events and we try to support as many as possible, either by being there or by including details in our pages. Get in touch if you’re an organiser – we’ll do our best to drum up more support for you if we can. Please try to give us as much notice as you can – we’re a monthly publication, so no point in telling us the day before your event happens! If you’re looking for something to do over the next month or so take a look at the many and varied options on our Diary Dates pages. We took a trip to The Woolpack in Esholt for this month’s Food & Drink feature; many of you will know it well as the pub of the same name in TV’s Emmerdale. Much has changed there since the cameras left, and it’s recently been refurbished – well worth a visit if you can. If Emmerdale is a staple of your TV week – take a look at P40 – we caught up with some of the cast members at Carnegie Stadium on 9th June, they were happy to pose for our photographer. If you’ve given thought to extending your home, take a look at this month’s Property Matters section for some solid advice. I’m more at home tapping the keys on my laptop than I am banging in a nail (or whatever the technical term is!), so if you’re like me you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of very good trades-people advertising in this month’s edition. It’s always best to use local companies when you can! The deadline for competition entries, prize claims, diary date requests, editorial submission and advertising in the next edition is 05/07/13 so please get in touch as soon as you can. Until next month,

The Woolpack at Esholt is perhaps best known as THE Woolpack, of Yorkshire Television’s ‘Emmerdale’ fame, since the popular TV soap opera used this village between Shipley and Guiseley to film it’s outside broadcasts from 1976 to 1996. The TV cameras may have long since moved out, to a purpose built village on the Harewood Estate, but the original Woolpack still stands and is thriving. Having undergone a major £50,000 refurbishment, the pub reopened it’s doors in March this year under new management, and we went along to check out the new look and menu.
The Woolpack New owners, Glenn and Caroline Royston, have a long history of managing pubs including within the Yorkshire Dales, and they explained that they were keen to rid The Woolpack of the former pine wood and green décor and return it to it’s former glory as a traditional, English country inn serving good, home cooked food and cask ales. The new interior is warm and welcoming with traditional stone floors, dark wood and tasteful red furnishings. Deceptively large inside, there is a large main seating area with
a smaller, separated dining area to the rear, which is ideal for small family parties. There are a good variety of trails in the stunning countryside around Esholt village and, with this in mind, there is also a room for ramblers and cyclists to enjoy a pint and a pie, whilst perusing the walls, which are adorned with ‘Emmerdale’ memorabilia, past and present. All of the staff are local and this seems to add to the friendly feel of The Woolpack, with plenty

“The Woolpack is a good place to stop and refresh yourself whilst enjoying the peaceful country pace ”
of tourists and visitors asking for directions and recommendations. Village resident, Clair Thrippleton, is Head Chef and has vast experience, previously working at Cellar V in Guiseley for many years. She now works alongside Glenn in the kitchen to produce an extensive range of hearty, freshly prepared food, the most popular dish being the steak pie. There are also lighter meals and sandwiches available if you should wish to save space for dessert, and the Sunday roast is always popular, with a choice of meats locally sourced from the Aire/ Wharfe Valley. Special dietary requests can be catered for with advance notice and bookings are also recommended at busier times and for larger parties. Coach trips are still welcomed to Esholt with visitors coming from as far afield as Finland, but 48 hours notice is required for dining in The Woolpack in such instances, as the village can see up to 4 coaches per day at busier times. Theme nights are a new addition to The Woolpack too with the first evening being planned at the time of writing; a Spanish tapas evening with a live flamenco guitarist. This will be shortly followed by a special Father’s Day Sunday menu, which again had a generous and varied choice of dishes to suit most tastes.

So, whether you want to enjoy a ramble and take in the countryside air around Esholt or take the kids to meet friendly Farmer James and his animal family at nearby St Leonards’ Farm Park, or maybe you just want to photograph yourself drinking Amos Brearly’s favourite ‘Emmerdale’ beer, The Woolpack is a good place to stop and refresh yourself whilst enjoying the peaceful, country pace. When you’re sat outside, listening to the birdsong and the distant hum of the tractors it really is extraordinary to think that you’re only such a short distance from a main road, with Shipley and Guiseley only 10 minutes away at either side. The Woolpack is open from 11am – 11pm, 7 days a week and further details can be found on the website www. thewoolpackesholt.co.uk, or on their facebook page.
Local Food
Ingredients: Buy Local “The chef takes pride in using only locally sourced ingredients”. Possibly the most clichéd phrase in restaurant ‘reviews’. Restaurants often pay for reviews in magazines so they’re not always a reliable appraisal - the writer is of course obliged to speak highly of their client’s culinary capabilities. Although reviews may be disingenuous, it’s clear that ‘locally sourced ingredients’ have huge benefits for us – environmentally, economically and, most importantly in their appearance and taste. If you do get chance, bypass the supermarket for once
and give your local independent producers a try you’ll be surprised at the range of products on offer at markets and Farm Shops. It makes sense to everyone that a leg of Lamb born, raised and slaughtered locally will taste better than one that has traveled (in shrink-wrap) from New Zealand. Travel is great for people, but not produce. We’re blessed with some great options for picking up local food ingredients so there’s no need to travel 30 miles into the countryside for genuine, organic local produce. Try going along to your local Farmers Market or Farm Shop – here’s a few destinations to get you started.

Yorkshire Puddings Whisk together equal quantities of eggs, plain flour and milk, approximately three quarters of a pint of each, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Melt the beef dripping in medium sized pudding tins in oven at 200 degrees Celsius, until the fat is smoking. Pour the mixed batter quickly into tins, approximately half an inch in each, and place in oven. Cook for 5 minutes before turning down oven to 150 degrees Celsius and cooking for a further 15 minutes, until risen and golden brown. Serve with rich gravy made from meat juices and caramelized onions.
Mains
1kg stewing steak Knob of Butter 10 oz Plain flour Onion chopped Mushrooms chopped Pint of ale 4 oz butter Salt and pepper Egg for glazing

Dessert
4 eggs Half pint cream 2oz sugar 100 mls Cointreau Seville oranges Buttered white bread Sultanas and mixed peel Marmalade Crème Fraiche to serve Fresh mint to serve
Steak and Ale Pie with Onions and Mushrooms
Seville Orange and Cointreau Bread and Butter Pudding
Seal one kilogram of stewing steak in a large saucepan with enough butter, seasoning and flour to make a roux. Add chopped onions and mushrooms and then 1 pint of ale and enough stock to cover the meat. Simmer for 2 hours until the meat is tender. Place in a pie dish before topping with shortcrust pastry, made with 8 oz of the plain flour, butter, seasoning and enough water added to make a dough. Roll out pastry on a floured surface, top the pie dish, glaze with a beaten egg and bake for 20 minutes, until golden brown. Served with chunky chips, seasonal vegetables and rich onion gravy.
Grease a pie dish or ramekin with butter. Line with buttered bread and sprinkle with sultanas and dry mixed peel, before adding orange segments. Next soak with Crème Anglaise and repeat the layering process until the dish is full. To make the Crème Anglaise whisk together the eggs, cream, sugar and Cointreau. The final layer should be Crème Anglaise. Cook in a pre-heated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes before glazing with hot marmalade and serving with Crème Fraiche topped with citrus fruit garnish and fresh mint.
10 Animal Matters
All Creatures Great and Small Have you ever considered a Guinea Pig as a pet? For the beneficiaries at local charity, Caring For Life looking after small mammals such as guinea pigs and rabbits has shown very clear health benefits. While learning new skills of animal husbandry, the young ladies who work at CFL have very much enjoyed the calming effect of stroking and handling the animals. The small mammals project really does help improve self-esteem and sense of self worth. CFL have three banks of cages set up at the farm, currently holding about 30 guinea pigs. Go take a look if you’re considering buying one. Feeding and caring for these small animals is very therapeutic! If you’d like a ‘pig’ of your own, keeping the animals in the best environment is crucial. At CFL’s Crag House Farm a cabin by the woods has been set aside - a delightful residence with electricity, hot water, disabled access and beautiful views. They’ve got a better deal than some humans! If you don’t have the space for a cabin (who does!) then a goodsized hutch or cage with a run is perfectly adequate, as long as there’s enough space to stand up and to exercise. Access to the run shouldn’t be a treat; it’s essential for good health. Do make sure the run and hutch (if outside) is fox-proof. Good pet shops will be able to advise on what is appropriate. Again, pet shops will advise on food and general care. Typically Guinea Pigs live for 5-6 years, but some may live longer so please be mindful that if you’re buying one for an eleven year old, you might well end up feeding, cleaning and grooming the animal yourself as teenagers rarely choose a pig over a party!

CASSIE
1
This is Cassie, a five year old Staffordshire X rescued by Rosie Dutton and family from Dogs Trust - they had found her wandering the streets. Now, Cassie loves nothing more that chasing her ball all day and curling up in front of the fire on a cold day. Rosie told us “She's one in a million!”
This distinguished young chap is Cassidy, a Sheltland Sheepdog who lives with Chris Myatt of Farsley. Chris told us “He is four years old, and is very loving and friendly with people. His favourite callers are the Milkman (because he gets some treats) and the Postman who has made a fuss of him since he was an eight week old puppy. His favourite foods are crab, lobster and cheese and he loves licking the creamy top off a pint of Guinness!”

MA X
Life’s a beach for Max, a three year old tri-coloured Border Collie. He loves going for long walks on Otley Chevin or by the canal with companions Rachael and Matt Coates. He can also be found taking up all the space on the sofa or the bed having a nap! He loves meeting new people and having his belly scratched but is very stubborn when playing fetch because he just won’t fetch!

TOBY
Here is six year old Toby who was adopted by Barbara Spurr when he was nearly two from a Border Collie Rescue Centre. He loves playing with empty boxes, rubber gloves (when he can pinch them!) and his dad’s woolly hat. Barbara told us “He is a really affectionate dog and very handsome!”
Thanks to everyone for sending your snaps in – sorry we couldn’t print them all in this edition. Keep them coming though and remember, it’s not just for the canines! Send us images of your pet along with a few words about them to: info@covered-magazine.net

Leeds United formalised their relationship with Horsforth St Margaret’s youth sides in May. HSM is now LUFC’s feeder club for north Leeds and has some training sessions with Leeds’ highly qualified coaches. Some sixty youngsters and their HSM coaches got exactly that on 18 May.
Leeds United Seals the Deal in Horsforth Leeds United is the only Football League side serving the Leeds area. Many fans remember their successes in the early nineties, and some of those the glory years in the early seventies. So, Championship League LUFC is always under pressure to provide a Premiership profile in the county of Yorkshire. One of the ways LUFC engages with the county’s footballing community is by investing in coaching at both central and local levels. The club’s own academy is at Thorp Arch, with several satellite training centre dotted round the county. They also have feeder clubs in north, south, east and west Leeds – large clubs with a substantial youth element and a proven commitment to bringing them on. To that end, LUFC recently cemented their relationship with Horsforth St Margaret’s, formalising their appointment as Leeds’ feeder club for the north of the city. It’s very much a two-way relationship. Yes, LUFC gets to spot and develop local exceptional talent. But the club’s youth teams, and their coaches, reap the rewards of being trained directly by Leeds’ highly qualified coaching staff. A win/win situation? Ask again in five years, maybe ten...

Finance Matters Editor Chris Barnham investigates financial issues that might affect the residents of this area. These are difficult times we live in, and redundancy (or more commonly the fear of redundancy) means that many people are being forced to only consider the short term in regards to their finances.
A WEALTH OF EXPERTISE ON YOUR DOORSTEP
Not everyone though is struggling, and indeed there will be quite a few people locally who are sitting on considerable sums which are earning very close to nothing in the bank. Given that inf lation remains persistently above target figures, for almost everyone if you have money in the bank it is losing value, whether it is in ISAs or not. Short-term this is ok, long term it’s a problem that should be addressed. Up until recently the banks monitored accounts, and anyone with more than emergency fund levels was invited to speak to a financial planner to help them make these longer-term decisions. With the qualification benchmark rising and considerably tighter regulation most banks are pulling out of offering even basic investment advice, preferring to recommend nothing more than holding money in cash. Investing means taking on some, but not necessarily much, risk. How to structure this to maximise the benefits whilst reducing exposure to potential downsides requires careful assessment of your means and your goals, with specific knowledge of different strategies and a great deal of understanding. Leaving money to languish in the bank is fine for the short term, but not for making real and effective plans. For that it’s best to speak to a professional.

All Pains And No Pain For Froebelian Nearly 40 Year 5 and Year 6 children from the Froebelian School in Horsforth recently returned from an exciting educational and cultural trip to France. It was the perfect opportunity for them to practice their language skills and get a taste of French life. There was a lot of excitement at Leeds Bradford airport as they boarded the plane to Paris and then embarked on a coach trip to the Chateaux that was their home for the next six days in the West of Normandy. A busy programme of activities and exploration had been planned which included; a visit to a French goat farm (which also produced wonderfully smelly cheese), a trip to the local market where the children had chance to spend their pocket money, a visit to the beautiful Mont Saint Michel and a bread making class conducted entirely in French! There was also a history day included with a visit to the nearly thousand year old Bayeux Tapestry which provided the children with a chance to see the bodies of the dead being stripped of their armour; a detail
The children making bread at the bread making class
which fascinated the children. This was followed by a very moving visit to one of the D Day landing beaches and a WWII cemetery. After six days of busy adventures the children returned tired but happy and with more confidence about speaking and listening in French. When asked about the trip one Year 6 pupil said I enjoyed the sinking feeling of the quick-sand on the walk to Mont Saint MichelĂŽ while a Year 5 pupil said I really enjoyed practicing my French and getting to eat lots of croissants and pain au chocolate!

HOST CLUB SUCCESS AT APPERLEY BRIDGE CANTER Despite the threat of rain and high winds, 23rd May saw another large turnout for the popular Apperley Bridge Canter - organised by Horsforth Harriers. Runners were rewarded with largely pleasant conditions for the 9th running of the multi terrain race. The 2013 race saw victory for Woodhouse Grove School, the hosts of the race since its inception. Phillip Tedd, Woodhouse Grove School’s Director of Music romped home in 33:06, almost two minutes ahead of second place finisher Joe Baxter (34:56), with Saltaire Striders’ Simon Pass in third place (35:12).

Calverley Gets Busy – and Creative The local arts and community scene in Calverley was particularly busy on the second Saturday in June. Calverley Methodist Church held a local produce, arts and crafts market while Champion House care home held their summer fête. On top of those more regular events, Creative Calverley was also promoting and supporting Calverley’s first folk day. Centred in New Inn, the day included three other venues ready for any occasional open mic contributions. New Inn had seven acts booked between 1pm and “late”, plus a few extra slots for open mic contributants who wanted to get noticed. When Covered visited the event, local folk singer Heather Woodhead was just completing her open air session in the beer garden at New Inn while Otley folk band Reel Jiggy was setting up indoors. Irish jiggy. Plus an occasional hint of country. Well received. Organiser Kathy Griffith told Covered that afternoon; “I’m so relieved. A lot of work, a lot of nerves. But here it is. So well supported. Several of those involved have yet to take a good look at the figures, but we’d all dearly love to hold a similar event next year.”
The sun shines on Calverley – Heather Woodhead had just completed her lunchtime slot at New Inn.

Permitted development means that no planning permission is required. However, anyone wanting to build an extension of this length must provide the local planning authority with a written description of the proposal, a plan of the site showing where the extension will be, the addresses of any adjoining properties, including those to the rear, and a contact address for the developer. The Local Authority will serve a notice on the adjoining properties, the notice must also explain when the 42 day determination period will end, how long neighbours have to make an objection and the date by which these must be made.
READER TESTIMONIAL After a life-time of working in newspapers, your little gift through my letterbox is both welcome and awaited. There are no dirty newsprint fingers as your mag is beautiful, quality, glossy paper and the A5 size makes it perfect to read anywhere. The content is full of great local news and in the last edition I found out about Horsforth Cricket Club’s open day which I took my little Grandson along to. Without your mag I would never have found out! The adverts have become my Bible, and I refer to them for everything. I have used brilliant, local, reliable contractors and have found lots of amazing deals which have saved me money - giving me excellent local service and a feel good factor of supporting local businesses. To be eco-friendly I share my mag, it is read from cover to cover first and then passed on to family who might need this or that, or simply enjoy “COVERED. The name says it all, you've got it Covered!
Anne Huckerby LS16
If an objection is received the Planning Authority must take this into account and make a decision based on whether the impact on the amenity of all adjoining properties is acceptable. They will not consider any other issues. The Authority notifies the developer in writing that either no objections were received and amenity impacts do not have to be considered or following consideration the impact on amenity is acceptable. If approval is refused the developer has the right to appeal. The development must also accord with all other relevant limitations that apply to other rear extensions allowed under permitted development e.g. must be constructed with materials of a similar appearance to those already used in the rest of the house and the extension must be completed by 30th May 2016. Get involved Women and Girls’ Football July is officially Women’s Football Month with the UEFA Euro Finals in Sweden and the 20th anniversary of women’s football at The FA. Football is now the most popular team sport for women and girls in the UK, with interest increasing in the game following the GB’s team strong performance at last year’s Olympics and England installed as 4th favourites for July’s European Championships starting in Sweden on 10th July. BBC3 will be showing England’s opening game against Spain at 7.30pm on Friday 12th July, whilst there are opportunities to get involved in the game at grassroots levels in the North and West of Leeds. On Wednesday 3rd July 2013 Leeds Trinity University will host a prestigious FA Girls’ Football Festival. The programme is a joint initiative by The FA Women’s Super League (WSL), its lead partner Continental Tyres, Sport England and UEFA. The FA Girls’ Football Festivals will visit various venues up and down the country over the coming months providing girls with an exciting, interactive football experience. The festival offers something for everyone and is inclusive to all levels of ability, from youngsters enjoying their first involvement with football to regular players. The FA are looking to encourage at least 300 girls to attend from local schools. The programme will see informal, lively, festival style events which combine football, lifestyle and music to encourage girls to get involved. Those attending will also get the chance to play with the stars of the game as members of the England squad and FA WSL stars will also be at every event to meet, chat and have a kickabout with the girls. The festival has 3 key aims, these are to drive participation, recruit new players, retain existing players and finally to raise awareness of the FA Women’s Super League.
So if your local school is new to the game or love it already, please encourage them to bring their girl’s team along to The FA Girls' Football Festival at Leeds Trinity University. For more information and how to enter – Please contact Caroline Hulme, Women and Girls Football Development Officer on caroline. hulme@wrcfa.com If you are looking for an opportunity for your daughter to get involved in girls football, watch out for a number of soccer or multi-sports clubs, if they are ready to join a team great examples locally of girls football are Horsforth St Margaret’s (www.hsmafc.com) and Guiseley (www.guiseleyjuniors.co.uk), Wortley FC Ladies (www.wortleyfc.org.uk) and Farsley AFC Ladies (www.farsleyafc.com) For more information on Women and Girls football and how to get involved please visit the following link were you can find your local Women and Girls Football club: http://www.westridingfa.com/~/media/countysites/ wrfa/documents/women-and-girls-football-provisionsbooklet-2012-2013-(2).ashx

The sign of summer: Strawberries should be flowering well – use nets or curtains to protect crops as they grow.
your freezers with this delicious crop, and look forward to rhubarb crumbles all over the winter.
We hope all the frosts have now passed, and it is safe to plant out all the tender perennials you have been keeping warm indoors. These may include dahlias, chrysanthemums, pelargonium and many others. There is also still time to sow seed of half hardy annuals, draw patterns in the soil when sowing them to create a stunning display when they flower. Delphiniums, lupins, echiums and other hardy plants are all growing tall; insert stakes to keep them upright. Large house plants benefit from a summer holiday, so stand them outside in a sunny and sheltered spot – remembering to feed them and water on a regular basis. It is also useful to use either organic or non organic sprays on a regular basis, to prevent any build ups of pests and diseases in your garden. Slugs and snails are a perennial problem, so continue to use your favourite method of keeping them under control. Strawberries and other soft fruits are flowering well, which means using nets or curtains to protect your crops as they develop. Our wet spring has made rhubarb crowns grow exceptionally well, and cropping may continue to the end of July. This means you can fill
In the vegetable garden, continue to earth up your potatoes as the green shoots appear above the soil. Pigeons and other birds delight in stripping the leaves of any green vegetable plant, which means using imaginative bird scarers like suspended CDs, stuffed birds of prey or nets. Be vigilant and continue to plant small quantities of your favourite vegetables every two weeks. The Horsforth Allotment Shed on Featherbank Lane, Horsforth is open every Friday night from 7pm-8pm. Go Glam! This Is Chelsea, The Only Way Is Essex. If these programmes have taught us anything it’s that glamour is on-trend. Whilst the ladies of Chelsea might be more understated than the glamourpusses in Essex, the message is clear – Go Glam! If you’re more akin to jeans and a jumper, don’t worry – here’s Covered’s 5 top tips for getting ahead in the glamour race.
1
Get a tan
Orange is not a natural skin tone, nor is it particularly appealing so try and steer clear of budget methods for home application. Under the sun is of course the best place to get a natural tan (taking precautions such as skin block). If you can’t rely on a regular dose of sun or want an instant glow, visit an established salon for a spray tan or jump on a sunbed. Salon’s will offer a range of advice and should have your safety in mind too.
Fashion, Hair And Beauty
2
Put some bounce in your hair
‘flat’ or ‘lifeless’ are not positive words when it comes to glamour. ‘Volume’ and ‘shape’ are. And the good news is- back combing your hair is back on the menu! Blow dry your hair upside down, add loadsa hairspray and pin up appropaitely for a mane worthy of Farrah Fawcett! – or Cheryl Cole- depending on your genaration…
3
Paint your lips
Remember the bluish tinge your lips took on during the long winter months? Well no more pale mouths! Paint your lips using this seasons brightest colours, whether that be scarlet, apricot, fuscia or wine, don’t forget a slick of moisturisng colour when stepping out of the house this Summer.
4
Don’t forget your fingertips
We are all guilty of neglecting our nails, but remember they say a lot about our general health (brittle, dry with white spots anyone?) Lets treat our nails with a bit of respect and give them centre stage for once. Bright nail polish gives a playful, fun and lighthearted twist to your outfit and should be considered a must have accessory!
5
29
Please yourself!
Ditch the pastels and earthy tones. Cast out neutrals and show the world your confident side! There’s nothing wrong with wearing a beautiful, understated blouse, or perfectly put togther trouser suit- but it doesn’t scream FUN! Step out of your comfort zone this Summer and dress to impress. Choose bright colours to reflect your mood, choose a flattering cut to make you feel good, and select those shoes that are just that extra inch higher than your everyday shoe, just to shake things up a bit. If you’re still struggling for inspiration, bob in to an independant salon or boutique. You’re far more likely to receive true customer service and genuine advice often lacking in the chain stores.

Horses and Hats at Wetherby Racecourse
It’s party time – many workgroups and friends made a night of it. These ladies had just cabbed in from Harrogate.
Being an entirely National Hunt (jumps) racecourse, Wetherby pulled down its Tote betting shutters for the summer on 30 May and won’t be raising them again until 16 October. Though they certainly went out in style. Their annual Ladies’ Evening was complemented by a hat show presented by Leeds College of Art and showing the creations of eleven of their final year students.
There were several mini-shows that evening, each concluded by a group line-up.
Local milliner Beth Hirst of Couture Hats, Farsley, had her own display adjacent to the fashion marquee.

32 Property Matters
TV’s Nigel Havers Warns Landlords and Tenants The big British holiday get away is about to get into full swing for many of us. And none of us would ever think of packing our bags and jetting off to the summer sun with a travel company that wasn’t properly accredited. Yet when it comes to letting a property, where the stakes are far higher, there are many landlords and tenants entrusting their money with an agent who is not regulated. More and more are increasingly finding out to their cost the error of the ways – after being left out of pocket to the tune of many thousands of Pounds. And it’s not just the man or woman in the street who is falling victim to these scams. So too are high-profile celebrities, such as TV actor Nigel Havers. So angry was the Coronation Street star with having been fleeced out of £1,300 by an unregulated agent that he took to national TV warning tenants and landlords of the risks of dealing
with agents that did not meet the strict membership criteria of industry bodies such as ARLA and NALS. He warned viewers of BBC TV’s Watchdog programme to do so at their peril – there is no comeback from dealing with a rogue agent who has no protection scheme in place to safeguard your money whether it is tenants’ deposits or landlords’ rental income. All responsible letting agents display the SafeAgent logo – offering customers complete peace of mind that client money is protected in an official scheme. Havers, a familiar face on the small screen for over 30 years, told presenter Anne Robinson: “Just like my money, the agent who rented the property has disappeared.” Many people are not in a position to buy their own homes and will be renting for many years to come. It is therefore of the utmost importance to choose a letting agent with whom you know your money is protected.
editor’s note Thanks to Paul Mitchell, Branch Manager, Linley & Simpson. Station Road, Horsforth.
We urgently require... 2, 3 and 4 bed houses £700 to £1000 pcm. We have 400 potential tenants registered with us, looking in that price bracket!
Don’t just take our word for it, see what some of our current landlords are saying… “We value the fact that they have a very acute understanding of the demands of the letting market in each of the areas in which they operate”

thinking of extending your home? Here are some simple steps which could save you time & money. Firstly find a Local Architectural Consultant or Architect, who you think you can work with, someone willing to listen to your ideas and work to your budget, but at the same time come up with an interesting design and also be aware of any planning issues in your area. Dependent on how complicated your building project is you can have your drawings done by a Local Architectural Consultant which will keep your costs to a minimum as Architects can often be very expensive. Review the design options with your Architectural Consultant and don’t be afraid to talk about what you want. Try to find the best use of space as extending can often add value to the future sale price, whether or not this is an extension, loft conversion or garage conversion.
Before the extension (turn to page 36 to see the completed building work)
Ideally you should make a list of all the changes/ ideas that you want to incorporate and discuss it with your Architectural Consultant. Do you need planning permission? Speak to your Architectural Consultant regarding obtaining all necessary Planning Permissions and Building Regulation Approvals for the work you intend to carry out.

36 Property Matters
The current permitted development rules now make the whole process of extending your property a lot easier. You’ll be surprised how much extra space you can get without going down the full planning route. In terms of costs your overall budget should include Architectural Consultant’s, Local Authority & Engineer’s fees, as well as adding on VAT which often gets forgotten about. Likewise it is recommended that you include an amount as a contingency sum. Try not to deviate from the final plan/quote as once you have agreed the quote changes invariably become extra costs so you should try and avoid them. Use local tradespeople as they will want to keep their reputation in the area and often are more reliable. Ideally try to get at least 2 or 3 quotes and always check examples of their work. When you have chosen your contractor, make sure that you have a written contract before you commence work. This would typically include details of scheduling & costs. Remember the more you plan, the more you will save in the long run.
The complete effect: after the extension

“We used Creative Installations to knock through our kitchen and dining room into one room and install a new kitchen. David and his team designed us a bespoke kitchen that showed he had listened to what we had wanted. His team arrived on time, kept us informed, were very tidy and delivered a new kitchen we have loved ever since. David is honest and does what he says he will do at a good price and with excellent work ethics. I have no problem recommending Creative Installations and David Crossley. Michael J Clarke, Doncaster, South Yorkshire

Two of North Leeds Neighbourhood Policing Teams gave away a wealth of advice, literature and freebies. Your local NPT will still have plenty in stock.
These police horses were two of the most

Carnegie Stadium was blessed with sunny weather on 9 June, when Leeds Carnegie RUFC, Leeds Rhinos RLFC and Yorkshire CCC combined resources and hosted a spectacular children’s day. Can I ask a favour for Horsforth? We will soon have “In Bloom” judges around again after Spring’s visit was cancelled, due to the weather. Can residents and local businesses, put a special effort into the “finishing touches” for gardens, road edges, baskets and other floral exhibits that the Judges will see as part of their visit? The Community and Environment committee is making sure that the hanging baskets and the Jubilee Garden are in perfect order. A very big “Thank You“ to everyone involved with Horsforth Gala. The Gala committee, and their many volunteers, continue to make this event an entertaining and successful annual event – in spite of the unpredictable weather! The Council welcome the efforts of Horsforth Churches Together, and their monthly Farmers’ Market. This proves to be a lively and friendly addition to the beginning of each month. Council work continues through the efforts of the various committees: Public Safety part funds PCSOs, who use S I D and speed guns to monitor
motorists, and looks at the development of other safety schemes, including purse chains. Community & Environment do much to make Horsforth a colourful place with hanging baskets, organising ginnel cleaning, as well as providing grants to local organisations. The committee is also looking for nominations for The Good Citizen and Young Achiever awards – get in touch with the Town Clerk if you’d like to put someone forward. Planning & Licensing monitors all planning applications within the Horsforth Town Council boundary and make comments and objections, where appropriate. The working group of this committee is preparing a plan to work alongside the Site Allocations consultations from Leeds City Council. All financial matters are scrutinised and considered by the Finance & General Purposes committee before these matters are put to the whole Council for consideration and approval. As you can see, Council life is never quiet or dull! Jude Arbuckle Chair Horsforth Town Council

Gabby Logan installed as Leeds Trinity University’s first Chancellor Leeds Trinity University celebrated a proud moment in its history as Gabby Logan was formally installed as its first Chancellor on 6 June. The Installation Ceremony in the University’s Chapel brought together family, friends, staff and students, along with representatives from the region and the University. The ceremony began with an academic procession that featured representatives from across the University, followed by a performance from members of the Leeds Cathedral Choir. The Chair of the Board of Governors of Leeds Trinity University, Ed Anderson, welcomed guests and the Lord Mayor of Leeds offered Gabby a civic welcome. As well as celebrating Gabby Logan’s appointment as Chancellor, the occasion also celebrated the strong heritage of Yorkshire that Gabby and the University are proud to be a part of. Commenting on her appointment, Gabby said: “It’s a great privilege to become Leeds Trinity University’s first Chancellor and this was a very proud

I’m delighted to accept the role of Chancellor.” Professor Margaret House, Vice-Chancellor of Leeds Trinity University, told Covered: “Today’s Ceremony was a special occasion for a special person, Gabby Logan, who will be a fantastic ambassador for our University. Stuart Andrew mp As many regular readers of this column will know, one of my key interests in Parliament is planning and I know from my own constituency postbag that this interest is shared by many in our community. I have long supported sustainable planning and have raised the issue of overdevelopment many times in Parliament, highlighting in particular the importance of prioritising brownfield sites over greenfield sites in terms of planning for Leeds. It is so vital that we preserve our green spaces for future generations, though I do accept that there is a worrying shortage of housing at present and developments are necessary in order to address this. It is therefore important to note that Leeds City Council is currently running a public consultation on The Site Allocations Plan, allowing Leeds residents to have a say on the areas which will be considered for development as part of the Leeds Core Strategy long term spatial vision. I strongly advise all those who have an interest in developments in our community to submit a response. As a politician I am keenly aware of the importance of listening to the views of my constituents and this is an excellent opportunity for residents to voice their own opinions.

NEWS FROM SAFE HAVEN Once upon a time in a faraway land all the people had everything they needed to live and be happy, then came the big bad wolf and stole everything they possessed. They didn’t know which way to turn so they managed the best they could with what they had and all that God had provided in the natural sense. Then there came a day when a rich man passed by, he had great wealth and wished to help all those around him. The people wondered ‘how is this possible, how can this man do such things, surely he will run out of money and very soon’ but the man knew better, he knew from whence it came and from whom, he knew there was an endless supply of all the wealth in the universe at his disposal…as long as he continued to give generously it never ran out. Do you know a man in need, do you give of yourself or do you deny that the increase will come back to you. If only you will trust the one and only provider of all things good... we do, at Safe Haven.
If you or anyone around you has great need then contact us by email leigh.safehaven@yahoo.co.uk Our Charity Shop is full of good quality 2nd hand furniture at reasonable prices. Our promise to you is that we will endeavour to help any request for help according to the level of genuine hardship. You may be asked to provide a referral letter to support your application. Trojan Efforts at Burley Juniors FC Elsewhere in this issue you can read how Horsforth St Margaret’s FC has reaffirmed its FA Charter Standard by entering into a partnership with Leeds United. As LUFC’s official north Leeds “feeder” club, players and coaches alike benefit from the professional expertise that Leeds has to offer. But HSM is far from alone in what it has done for junior football in the area. For example, Burley Juniors (founded in 1985) now has 300 junior players. Both sexes, spread across twelve age ranges and competing in several leagues. Now called Burley Trojans Juniors, the club’s most spectacular and headline contribution to junior football, both locally and afar, is their annual May five-a-side tournament. Last month saw their 22nd. Yes, 22nd. Almost 200 teams of seven (with reserves), from all over the north. Competing over two days and on twelve pitches. Burley Trojans Juniors has attracted a number of sponsors, some big named, over the years. And a small army of volunteer organisers and officials – year round, as well as on the day. But there’s always room for more help – and more players. Menston Rangers u-9s ready to compete on the Sunday

Calverley Players – The Seven Ages of Stan Written by Calverley Player Colin Trenholme, The Seven Ages of Stan is based very loosely on Shakespeare’s The Seven Ages of Man (taken from As You Like It). In it, Colin explores seven decades of life in England starting in war-torn 1939. Sing for Heroes 2013! New choir seeks 40 men to sing their hearts out! If the only audience to hear you sing is your collection of rubber ducks in the bathroom you might be a little shy at unleashing your vocal talents in public. But award winning choral conductor Will Prideaux is convinced he could get you hitting the right notes in just 12 weeks as part of a new male choir. Sing for Heroes! is being launched with the aim of taking 40 men with a range of musical experience (including none!) and - over the course of 12 weeks – preparing them for a gala concert in aid of Help for Heroes in the spectacular setting of Leeds Town Hall. As the brains behind the project Will is not facing an easy task, but his credentials as Musical Director of both Leeds and Peterborough Male Voice Choirs should stand him in good stead. Will told Covered: "The whole idea of the project is to bring these people together as a community. We are creating a situation where they can come and have a go, get a warm welcome and not be judged”. To get the Sing for Heroes! project up and running introductory sessions are being held at the Carriageworks on Millennium Square on 11th and 12th July. Interested in getting involved? NO JOB TOO SMALL
Brendan Jordan has lived in Leeds all his life. He worked at Bridgecraft for eighteen years before starting up Jordan Upholstery. “I’ve been manufacturing suites for the best part of 30 years. Although we’ve traditionally supplied to trade, recently we’ve made the decision to open our doors to the general public. With us, you’re buying direct from the manufacturer, so you can have the choice of style, size and fabric without paying astronomical prices.
Anyone calling in will deal with me personally and I’ll oversee everything, right through to delivery. You’ll never get lost in the system with us; we are small enough to give the personal touch but large enough to deliver. All our furniture is hand made in our on-site factory so we control the quality from start to finish and are able to offer you the highest standards of craftsmanship and, of course, exceptional value for money.”
