Melita Bruvelis and Jess Crapis are the creative minds behind Casa Locale - The Local House. Lauren Goldsack from Beaches COVERED. sat down with these two designer extraordinaires to share how they got started, what inspires them and how to make a home sing.
What was the passion behind opening your store? Casa Locale was born from our joint love of interiors. We both come from design, retail and customer service backgrounds and have worked together for seven years as brand (Mayvn Interiors) and wholesale agent (Home Design & Co). For us, creating something together was a natural progression after navigating and trying to survive the lows of COVID and devastating storm damage in March.
Relaxed coastal cool is your vibe. What materials and colours do you use to create this? Anything and everything natural and textural, but we do appreciate the use of Tefl on-standard polyester in the right scenario – dogs, kids, husbands…
We have every colour in our wheelhouse, refl ecting the coast and the Northern Beaches; every shade of neutral to blues through greens. Greens are defi nitely having a hero moment right now. For a more contemporary coastal feel, rusts, tans and blacks with a neutral base are heavenly.
The Northern Beaches is a mecca for locally crafted homewares. How do you support local? We love to support local and discover new local brands and suppliers. Casa Locale translates to The Local House in Italian, which is Jess’s heritage and a healthy obsession of Melita’s since high school.
Some of our favs are Byrne and Love candles, Erin Masters Photography, The Pot Warehouse, Piega Window Furnishings, artist Judy Salleh and Mayvn Interiors Furniture. Well, Mayvn is the creation of one of our founders, so we have to say that! We love being surrounded by so much creativity. They all have such a great eye for their craft.
Bunnings’ colour wall is a minefi eld. Choosing the right paint colour is an overwhelming process. Don’t get me started on cushions! What services do you provide to help clients shape their homes? This is where we are most, at home! We are here to help our customers with all the big and small design decisions.
To make the process easier for customers, we have a gorgeous retail offering of furniture, soft furnishings, lighting, rugs, home décor, artwork and body and bath products. We are also working on a range of cool hampers for easy gifts. ‘Coffee Lover’, ‘Cocktail Lover’, ‘Cheese Lover’ and ‘Welcome to the Beaches’ are the themes we are currently working on.
We offer everything from one-off furniture and artwork sourcing to custom upholstery.
For starters, we have over 65 sofa designs to choose from that are made to order in Australia with a 10-year structural guarantee.
Our styling service is for clients who just need the fi nishing touches. With our Book a Design Consultation service, we’re by the client’s side the whole time, whether it’s interior design for one room or the whole home.
We fi nd that holiday home owners and those with investment properties appreciate our set price, curated furniture packages where we’ve made the design decisions for them.
We’re also a great resource for colour consultation and wallpaper sourcing. And when it comes to choosing cushions, Melita is our resident cushion queen.
Describe your dream house. Timeless, relaxed, full of texture and collected treasures with endless sunny spots to hang out with family and mates and, of course, on the Northern Beaches.
What are the three things that every home needs in order to sing? Visual balance, function, and unexpected moments.
What inspires you about the local area? The laidback and relaxed lifestyle, the ocean, the bushland, and especially living and entertaining outdoors.
