SOME OF THE BEST SPOTS IN MANLY

The name "Manly" originated from the Aboriginal word “Manly” or “Manlie” which means “to impress” or “to be splendid” and right now it feels like our iconic seaside suburb is certainly living up to its name.

A beachfront beauty, Manly offers stunning experiences that are hard to find in other parts of Sydney. On the stroll to Shelly Beach, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re on the Italian Riviera, with its rugged cliffs, turquoise cove and secluded swimming spots.

As for food and drink, there really is something for everyone. From high-end restaurants and cosy cafes to gelato bars, cocktails bars and dancing bars, you’ll be satisfied with beautiful brunches, top-notch coffee, lazy lunches and spoilt for celebration dinners. Boutique shops and wellness and health services are also taking up prime real estate.

One thing is for sure, Manly’s bouncing back, and we couldn’t be happier.

SOME FACTS ABOUT MANLY YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW!

During World War II, Manly was used as a base for the US military, who constructed a number of buildings and facilities in the area

Manly is home to the only Little Penguin breeding colony on mainland NSW.

The iconic Manly Ferry has been in operation since 1855 and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Sydney.

The Manly Art Gallery and Museum, which showcases the history and culture of the area, was opened in 1930 and is still operating today.

In the late 1800s, Manly became a popular seaside destination for Sydneysiders, who would take a ferry from the city to enjoy the beach and sea air.

MANLY SAILING

Turn up the Heat

THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE A HOLIDAY, UNTIL YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOORS AT RIMBA SWEAT'S SAUNA STUDIOS.

You don’t need to travel to the Amalfi to experience deep relaxation of a beach sunlounger as Rimba Sweat will have you adorned in a Turkish towel, heavy lidded, under a blanket of warming therapeutic rays without leaving your neighbourhood.

Lauren Wright, Founder of Rimba Sweat is passionate about the healing power of infrared. She explains how it can help detoxify your body and reduce inflammation. It’ll even burn calories while you relax.

“The benefits are undeniable,” says Lauren. “You can really reset or set someone’s day up for the better. The endorphins release makes it feel like a blend of walking out after a relaxing massage, or just finishing a workout.”

The soft curved walls, tactile earthy finishes and textured render of Rimba's interiors evoke a holiday state of mind. Upon entry, you’ll be transported to a seaside villa nestled on the

Mediterranean coast. The studio’s highly Instagrammable signature aesthetic will have you feeling relaxed in the most glamorous of ways.

But don’t let the cool vibes fool you: The saunas are hot! And, they’re supposed to be, as this is where you’ll find deep therapeutic benefits. The saunas yield a myriad of natural healing properties and health benefits, from muscle recovery and stress relief to glowing skin and detoxification.

You can experience luxury in one of the five private infrared sauna suites featuring tranquil in-room rain showers. Or, bring your friends for a chat in Sydney’s most premium communal contrast therapy room, consisting of a custom traditional Finnish sauna, two ice baths and showers. Rimba Sweat offers you a variety of ways to sweat, relax and recover in style.

“Our Neutral Bay studio is our most luxurious space yet. We’re so thrilled with the way it has come to life. It exudes a sense of slow, relaxed-sophistication that we know you’ll love,” says Lauren.

THE POWER OF INFRARED SAUNA THERAPY

Infrared therapy utilises rays found in sunlight, without exposing skin to harmful UVs. It provides an impressive array of health benefits from detoxification, pain relief, relaxation, improved circulation, skin purification, boosted immune system, and reduced blood pressure. Perhaps the most attractive advantage is that a single sauna session can burn up to 600 calories, so you get trim while you relax.

Hands down the best infrared sauna studio in Sydney. The entire infrared experience leaves you feeling amazing, MANLY LOCAL, BREE.

“It gives us a genuine feeling that we’ve really helped improve people’s mental and physical wellbeing,” explains Lauren.

“That makes us feel really proud to be doing what we do.”

CONTRAST THERAPY

For many health-conscious and Wim Hof fans, exposing the body to extreme temperatures is nothing new. By alternating between hot and cold temperatures,10to15 minutes in the traditional Finnish sauna followed by three to six minutes in the ice bath, is an effective way to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, speed up muscle recovery and elevate your mood.

The heat from the sauna causes blood vessels to dilate, which improves blood flow and reduces inflammation. The cold from the ice bath causes blood vessels to constrict, which improves circulation and reduces muscle soreness. This contrast between hot and cold temperatures helps to improve overall recovery and gives a sense of euphoria and energy.

CHROMOTHERAPY:

COLOUR LIGHT THERAPY

This holistic and effective technique restores balance by bathing the body in different coloured lights, each with unique healing properties. Chromotherapy is included in every infrared sauna session, so pick your colour, relax and enjoy the associated health benefits that can help you feel strong, rested, and focused.

Step into one of Rimba Sweat’s beautiful studios, where you can experience the rejuvenating power of sauna therapy. •

BEYOND THE CHUNKS & SWIRLS

Most people know Ben & Jerry's for their delicious and wacky ice cream flavours, but it’s their epic social mission that really makes us happy!

According to global ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's, “We love making ice cream – but using our business to make the world a better place gives our work its meaning.”

Ben & Jerry's in Manly is no exception to their epic social mission. The local ice cream parlour has implemented over 100 social mission initiatives including supporting Bear Cottage, Northern Beaches Women’s Shelter, One Meal and Northern Beaches Hospital. They partner with Seabin Project and are heavily involved in lots of community initiatives like beach clean-ups.

Just a few good reasons to grab a scoop of 'Cookie Dough' next time you’re in Mantown!

SOME FAST FACTS!

• 'Phish Food' is named after Ben & Jerry’s favourite rock band from Vermont called Phish. A share of the proceeds from sales of this flavour goes towards an environmental cause.

• All the brownies inside 'Chocolate Fudge Brownie' ice cream are made in Greyston Bakery in New York. This bakery doesn't hire people to make brownies. It makes brownies so that it can hire people, especially those who need a job.

• Ben & Jerry’s ingredients are fair trade. The bananas used in 'Chunky Monkey' come from Ecuador, while the coffee beans in 'Coffee, Coffee, Buzz, Buzz, Buzz' are sourced from Mexico.

• This season, Ben & Jerry's Autumn flavours include 'Salted Caramel Blondie' and 'Sofa So Good Together'

100 years old & still going strong

It took a century for the Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club to blow the candles out on its 100th birthday – and it might take just as long to recover from the biggest party this much-loved venue has seen.

The “Skiffies” was tested on and off the water over the Summer months and came through with flying colours.

The Australian 13 & 16ft Skiff Championships in early January was a resounding success, with close to 100 boats facing the starter’s gun across the week.

After a week of “dirty’ weather leading into the event, competitors were greeted with near perfect sailing conditions. The heat was on from the get-go.

The 16-footers division, featuring National and State champions, Olympic gold medallists and America’s Cup sailors, was arguably the toughest national regatta in its 115 year history.

The title came down to the last race, and fittingly, it was a Manly entrant left standing on the top step of the podium after the most dramatic of finishes.

Typhoon, owned by club great, Craig Nicholls, and crewed by skipper Nathan Wilmot, Malcolm Page and Zac Barnabas, did a “Steven Bradbury”, coming from mid-fleet to pass stricken St George boat Noakes, which unluckily lost a rudder pin and unable to continue.

“The whole race we were just working as hard as we could thinking anything could happen,” Typhoon skipper, Nathan Wilmot, said.

“We got a bit lucky in the end, but that’s sailing for you. Our consistency throughout the regatta put us in a position to cash in.

“It’s great that we were able to keep the title here at Manly in the club’s 100th year.”

It proved a double celebration for the host club, with 13-footer siblings Jemma and James Hopkins blitzing their class aboard EBIX.

The Hopkins teenagers picked up four wins, three seconds, a third and a sixth in a variety of conditions to record one of the most emphatic wins in recent 13s history.

Jemma said, “We sailed Manly Juniors when I was five or six and that didn’t really work out because we argued a bit, but it’s all good now.

“We worked really well together all week. It’s great to win it for Manly.”

The pace was no less frantic inside the clubhouse as a host of events were rolled out to coincide with the Australian Championships.

There was an Old Buffer's Day for former sailors, Ladies Day celebrating the amazing feats of the club’s female contingent and a Junior's Day for the area’s best up-and-comers.

Huge numbers poured into the licensed club to watch the action from the deck and via Sail Media’s excellent live streaming service.

All this activities have flourished at a time when Manly was busy keeping one eye on “sister” club St George, which hit the ground running and was throbbing with visitors and vibrancy after opening in early Spring.

Manly’s season culminated in the official centenary anniversary party –celebrated exactly 100 hundred years to the day the club held its first race on February 25, 1923.

“There are not too many Northern Beaches institutions to have reached the century mark and to do so in such good health,” Northern Beaches Council Mayor, Michael Regan, said.

“Everyone knows the skiff club. It’s a place to bring visitors when you want to wow them or just to enjoy a couple of beers on that deck and watch the world go past on the world’s best harbour.

“The skiff club has also been home to thousands of sailors, some of whom have gone on to Olympic and International success or won State and National titles.

“I’m sure those 1923 pioneers would be proud of where the club sits a 100 years later.”

Secretary-manager, Matt Hazell, added, “It’s a tribute to our hard working staff and those involved with the sailing program that we were able to successfully pull off probably the busiest time in the club’s history.

“To host the National championships on top of all the 100 year celebrations and the opening of St George was a huge achievement. We now look forward to carrying that momentum into the Autumn and Winter months.” •

Eat. Swim. Sleep. Repeat.

At NS Swim Schools, at Brookvale, Manly and Warringah, swim training, nutrition and sleep, go hand in hand. Here, Owner and Performance (Gold) Licence Coach of Olympians, Narelle Simpson, discusses the importance of prioritising all these elements, to help swimmers reach their ffull potential in the pool and open water.

Recovery, including proper nutrition and adequate rest, cannot be overstated when it comes to athletic training, particularly in a physically demanding sport like swimming.

The right nutrition is essential to maintain energy levels and support muscle recovery and sleep is critical for swimmers to recover and perform at their best. When we’re asleep, the body repairs and regenerates cells and getting enough sleep can also help swimmers avoid injury and illness.

Narelle understands the importance of good nutrition, sleep and recovery for all swimmers.

What role does recovery play in a swimmer’s performance and how do you incorporate it into your training program?

The most important part of any training is your recovery and that includes getting a good night’s sleep. If your body isn’t recovered, ready for the next training session, you cannot apply 100% to your training because your body isn’t ready. In turn, that can cause unnecessary risks. These risks can be pressure on your heart, muscles, ligaments and can over time manifest into injuries and health problems

How important is nutrition for swimmers, and what kind of dietary guidelines do you recommend for optimal performance?

Nutrition, like sleep, shares a very important part in enabling athletes to train and compete at their full potential, especially during prolonged events such as all day carnivals and open water events. To perform properly, your body needs the fuel and energy to complete whatever event or training you are doing. If your body has no fuel, it is swimming in a depleted state and eats into your muscles to find energy. It is always good to consult a dietitian or nutritionist to ensure you are fuelling your body adequately, especially pre and post events including training.

Tell us about your Natural Sport Energy powders and how they can help support overall health and nutrition.

Natural Sports Energy has two Australian made natural products especially formulated to provide energy using 100% natural ingredients that are low GI for, before, during and after exercise. Both have similar ingredients but in varying amounts to ensure you receive what is needed. Energy+ was formulated to give you prolonged energy during exercise, especially carnivals, and contains magnesium and certified organic coconut sugar which is low GI. Instead of having the spikes of the high sugary and artificial flavoured drinks that plummet the body into lows and highs. Energy+ gives you sustained energy that lasts and contains the vitamins and minerals, BCAA, carbohydrates and protein. Both products are tested for WADA banned substances. Nutrition+ is a protein powder, great for recovery, containing natural protein, calcium, extra nutrients and BCAA that are easily metabolised, allowing the body faster absorption. Those that are using it have commented on how it’s helped their gut health, sleep, and lean muscle, and it’s also low GI.

How does sleep affect a swimmer’s training and competition, and what strategies do you suggest to ensure your swimmers get enough sleep?

Sleep and recovery are paramount when exercising and in our busy lifestyle. Screen time should be minimised to allow the body to relax before sleep. Research has shown that there should be no screen time two to three hours before sleep. Mobiles, laptops and iPads need to be avoided at night. Everyone should aim for a minimum of seven to nine hours sleep depending on your age to allow your body time to recover. There are many studies that say if the body has completed some hard, intensive exercise for one to two hours, not only does it need sleep and great nutrition, but it also needs anything from 24 hours to 56 hours recovery time depending on age and muscle mass, before doing another intensive workout. Hence the importance of sleep, great nutrition, and hydration to achieve your goals. •
