The key to supporting your garden in preparation for the colder months is adding a layer of native leaf mulch. This will help to protect the soil and the roots of plants as the temperature drops, as well as helping to retain moisture in the soil. To effectively protect and insulate, you need premium quality mulch. For some helpful tips, pop into the nursery and chat to our knowledgeable team who enjoy nothing more than talking ‘mulch.’
Autumn is a truly beautiful time in the garden, and it’s a great opportunity to get down and dirty and pull out any weeds that might have sprung up. If you don’t have the time to do this, make sure to at least remove the seed heads, as just one can mean years of weeding to come. Organic herbicides can also be a significant help in keeping weeds under control.
From an ecological perspective, a garden serves as another puzzle piece in the surrounding landscape. Feeding the birds, lizards, and insects in your garden is an ongoing job, and planting a variety of plants that offer nectar, seeds, and flowers is essential.
We can get stuck in a rut and plant the same plants year after year. Lilly Pillies are very popular when it comes to hedging. They are so abundant that the bigger birds that feed on their berries rule the skies. We need to consider other types of native hedge plants that protect and feed smaller birds such as native wrens and finches. Not only do both sets of birds eat pests that cause diseases in the garden, they also keep us company while we’re working.
So, don’t be tempted to stick with the same old hedge plants for privacy. Consider a variety of options that will protect and feed both large and small birds.
For example, Grevillea Bronze Rambler is a small hedge that provides shelter for small birds. In addition, Banksia ericifolia is a tall hedge that also provides the same refuge. In addition, Austromyrtus tenuifolius produces tasty berries for both humans and animals. Kunzea ambigua is a striking, scented shrub that can also help to ward off ticks in your yard.
An efficient eco-system can be very rewarding. Watching native Animalia enjoy your garden is truly fulfilling
