2013

LOVE IS IN THE AIR !

Welcome to the February issue of Covered Local.

We love February! Valentines day, shrove Tuesday, the days begin to get lighter, spring flowers begin to poke their heads out and fingers crossed we have seen the last of the snow. Our capture winter competition has had a great response. Many of you have sent us in your pictures of winter from around the CR5 area. This month will see the votes take place on our facebook page www.facebook.com/coveredlocalCR5 with the over all winner having their picture used as the front cover for our March edition plus a meal for 2 and a bottle of wine at Goz Meze bar and restaurant in Coulsdon. So hop over to our facebook page and getting voting! This month we have again taken on a number of new advertisers from in and around the CR5 area. If you are contacting any of our advertisers please mention where you saw their advert, as it helps us to continue to bring you Covered Local every month. We have added a new “Local News” section this month to help the residents of CR5 keep up to date with the local going on’s. If you are part of any organisation/residents association or other that would like us to help to get a message out, please email me over the details and we will try our best to have it published.

This month our Captain Ted competition not only has you winning your very own Captain Ted but we are also giving away a Body Shop hamper worth £100. Have a look on page 70 to see if you can guess where he is. Don’t forget Ted has his own Facebook page now. Follow us on Facebook for more details: coveredlocalCR5 This months winner of her very own Captain Ted was Pam Morris from Old Coulsdon. Our “business of the month” winner Little Lambs soft play received a free half page advert which can be found on page 64. To enter this month all you have to do is email us your details and we will enter you into the draw. As like every month, we need your support to let us know about any upcoming events. We can then have them listed within our diary section, which will encourage more people to attend. It won’t be long now and we will all be sitting out in the garden again, relaxing and enjoying browsing through our Covered Local magazines. We hope that you all have an amazing February and that you enjoy what we have put together for you!

Extra support for budding disabled entrepreneurs

Let us know of any News you wish to have published in our Local news section: editor@coveredlocal.co.uk

Disabled entrepreneurs will get extra support to start up their

Can you spare a few hours? Hello Everyone,

own business in 2013. Support will be offered to pay for specialised equipment, support workers and travel costs to help get new businesses off the ground. Applicants will need to be enrolled on the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) scheme. The NEA provides expert coaching and

With the help of the London Wildlife Trust and Croydon Council, we have been granted some funds to repair the steps into Coulsdon Coppice (entrance corner of Birchfield Close and Rutherwick Rise). Although LWT will be bringing a few helpers, we need as many ‘hands’ as possible...can you help, as we have to spend this grant before the end of February? The working dates are: Tuesday Jan 29th Wednesday Feb 6th Saturday Feb 9th (our normal working day in the month) Thursday Feb 14th (I will let you know times) Any time you can give on these dates would be very welcome especially on the Saturday....or do you know of anyone who might be interested ? Refreshments are usually provided, plus probably a fire to keep us warm !! Some of the work may be a bit heavy, but there are other ‘jobs’ such as litter picking would be equally welcome. I look forward to seeing you. Best wishes Cllr Chris Wright 01737 555581 chris.wright@croydon.gov.uk

financial support for jobseekers with a business idea. Last year Access to Work helped over 30,000 disabled people keep or get jobs, with around 4,500 working in small businesses. Research also shows that around half (45 per cent) of Access to Work customers would be out of work if they did not receive support through the scheme. Half a million disabled people are self-employed, making up 15 per cent of all employed disabled people. This compares with 13 per cent, or 3.2m, of non-disabled people in self-employment. Anyone interested in applying for this support, can search ‘Access to Work’ at www.gov.uk.

How can you help in 2013 To further bring together the community, our community, we are seeking to organise some events. This could be anything you can think of, something everyone can participate in. What do you want to see, attend and perhaps, help to organise? Chritmas has gone, it comes but once a year! That, however means that, really, it is now time to start planning for next Christmas, Christmas 2013! We, at the CWRA, have taken on the task of arranging Christmas 2013 in the town, working closely with the the Coulsdon Business Partnership and we hope we can have your support in making it one to remember, for all the right reasons. Some sugestions already have been for an Ice Rink, A Christmas Market, Carol Singing in the town centre, Switching on the lights event an even perhaps a Christmas Tree. Do you have any other ideas? Your help is invalulable to ensure that, no mater what else is going on around us, we pull together as a community. We will need as much help as we can get with Organisation, Promotion and especially Sponsorship. Thanks for your past help, and we are looking forward to hearing your ideas. To offer your help and put any ideas speak to our Vice Chairman, Chris Thairs, who is heading up the sub-committee by e-mailing him at vicechairman@coulsdonwest.co.uk

Our local history man on Facebook. Welcome to Coulsdon History With the help of a few mates I have managed to cover most of the general history of Coulsdon - and all that we could find in the last years is contained in this group. We are nearing 1000 photos to look at and learn from as well as videos and plenty of links to keep you busy . Our group is constantly changing and with 721 members now things are always coming to light, with our members being our main source of the information used. So why not become a member and have a brief look into the past of the areas in and around Coulsdon. It’s also a great page to share your photos of the past and stories that you have witnessed over the years. So if you are on face book look up our group: Coulsdon history or type in this link:

Brighton Road Coulsdon to under go repair works ( letter from London Borough of Croydon/EnterpriseMouchel ) On the 28th January to the 18th February 2013, EnterpriseMouchel (EM), working in partnership with the London Borough of Croydon (LBC), will be commencing carriageway resurfacing work along Coulsdon High Street. This will include theremoval of the existing central median strip construction and replacing it with a more maintenance friendly type. The works will be carried out during extended daytime hours, between 7:30am and 9:00pm. Carrying the works out at these times will shorten the total duration of the works programme and also eliminate the possibility of disturbing residents at night,as these works can be noisy. In order to ensure the safety of both the work force and the public, the work will take place under total closures of the high street. These closures will be in blocks of 100 – 150 metres in length and may affect access to both properties and businesses. We will maintain access as best as possible through out the duration of the works. The programme will be divided in to phases of work. Phase 1 from Lion Green Road to Chipstead Valley Road. Phase 2 will be from Chipstead Valley Road to Brighton Road/A23. There will be 7 sections of work within these phases. Four in phase 1 and three in phase 2. During phase 1 The Avenue will be used as part of the diversion. There will be parking restrictions along The Avenue to allow wider vehicles to travel along the route. There will be further diversions in place during the whole period of the work programme, which will be subject to change according to the sections being worked on at the time. These will be clearly signed and maintained. To allow deliveries to shops and access to offices, the closures will be manned by a traffic management operative who will assist drivers with access. For deliveries, it would be beneficial if these delivery vehicles were limited to 7.5 – 10 tonne vehicles, as there will be limited room to manoeuvre and turn around. We apologize for the inconvenience the carrying out of these essential works will cause. However, while these works are in progress, there will be a constant presence on site by the contractor carrying out the work, along with regular visits being made by LBC and EM engineers. Any concerns, queries or general questions regarding the progress of the works can be directed to any of these parties, who will do their best to answer them. If you have any concerns you would like to express in the meantime and for the duration of the work, you can forward them to the email address below, where we will try to answer you questions. highway.maintenance@croydon.gov.uk Alternatively please call 020 8726 6000 x 52864 and they will arrange for somebody to contact you. Yours faithfully,

CL Valentines

THE PERFECT VALENTINES DAY It’s Valentine’s Day – time for Cupid to come out and do his thing and you to come out and do yours for that man or woman who makes your heart skip a beat. Obviously, every relationship is different, but there are some cardinal rules you should follow when you start planning your Valentine’s Day date. Here are the essential guidelines that you need to remember: PLAN! Do not promise a romantic evening and then wing it. Make reservations at a nice restaurant in advance so you’re not left with nowhere to go. Hit the bank before the evening starts – stopping off at an ATM is a bit unromantic. So is filling the car with fuel. Get the annoying errands out of the way so you can both enjoy yourselves. LISTEN! If your significant others hates flowers, don’t get her a bouquet of roses because that’s what you think you’re supposed to do on Valentine’s Day. If she once said she thinks it’d be romantic to go the theatre, then book up some tickets. If your date loves a certain meal, make it. It shows you’ve paid attention and care about what your partner likes and dislikes. TALK! The special lady or man in your life may have hinted to you what they’d like for Valentine’s Day, but they probably have a good friend who they flat out told what they really want. Talk to their friends to get some insight. You may discover something that’s a total surprise to you and when you give it to your partner, it will be a total surprise to them. That shows you’re a doer willing to go the extra mile to make your special someone feel, well, special. DRESS APPROPRIATELY! If you’re taking your significant other out for dinner at a five-star restaurant where the waiters answer to “garcon,” then you need to leave your jeans and trainers at home. If you’re taking them to a football game then dress like a fan and keep the suit in the closet. Tailor your wardrobe to the occasion or else you run the risk of looking stupid BE GRACIOUS! Assuming you’ve done a good job putting Valentine’s Day together – and you’ll know if you have – don’t get cocky and say something like, “Ha! I told you I’d do a great job.” Being obnoxious is a turnoff and will wipe out all the effort you put into the evening. Just smile and say thank you and bask in the glory of having been responsible for a memorable date.

Where Art Has No Boundaries Self published artist George Ioannou opened the doors to Art Rebellion in 2010 bringing with him his fresh approach to art that gained him recognition as one of the top ten best selling living UK artists (Art Business Today ‘07). Art Rebellion under the leadership of George has sought to provide a fresh and exciting collection of work and a unique expressive outlet for the artists we represent. As an artist run gallery Art Rebellion has confronted the limitations faced by modern art galleries and continues to find ways to challenge the relationships between artist, gallery and art lover. Recent acknowledgement from the South London Business awards where George was named Entrepreneur of the year (2012) and also the Croydon business awards where he was named FSB Real Life Entrepeneur of the year (Croydon 2012) has reinforced the fact that Art Rebellionis a force to be reckoned with!

This year, Clinique has created a special NEW Limited Edition ‘Kisses from Clinique’ set featuring the best selling shades of Clinique’s iconic Superbalm Moisturizing Gloss. KISS IT BETTER is the brainchild of Carmel Allen whose daughter Josephine was treated at the hospital for Neuroblastoma - a type of cancer. After many months spent at the hospital, and struggling to reconcile life as a Beauty Editor, Carmel decided that she wanted to help and devised the KISS IT BETTER appeal. “The premise was really simple, KISS IT BETTER is something every parent says and does when their child is sick or injured. I wanted to turn Josephine’s experience into something positive and to help make a difference to the lives of children with cancer everywhere” said Carmel.

JEREMY PIVEN

‘MR SELFRIDGE’ BY VICKY DEARDEN AND WALLICE AVERY

// I WAS WILLING MY BEARD TO GROW BECAUSE I KNEW THAT THERE’S NOWAY THAT I COULD SAY NO // Everyone is talking about ‘Mr Selfridge’, ITV’s new Sunday night drama. The series portrays the life of Harry Gordon Selfridge, the man behind Selfridges in London, and stars ‘Entourage’ actor Jeremy Piven and former ‘Coronation Street’ star Katherine Kelly. The first episode of ‘Mr Selfridge’ drew an audience of 7.3 million in the UK. Here, Jeremy Piven says he jumped at the chance to play Harry Selfridge in the hit ITV drama, admits he hasn’t got the endurance for shopping, talks about the reaction he’s been getting since taking on the role and whether we’ll be seeing him in a second series...

SO WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO THIS? AND WHY DID YOU MAKE THIS YOUR FIRST THING BACK AFTER ‘ENTOURAGE’? JEREMY PIVEN: Well Andrew Davies wrote this piece that the likes I’d never seen before. I don’t know if it’s just Andrew that does it differently or all the Brits do it differently, but... IT’S JUST ANDREW. JEREMY PIVEN: It’s just Andrew. He had mapped out the entire season and where he had hoped all of us to go, all the twists and turns, and as I was reading it, I was willing my beard to grow because I knew that there’s no way that I could say no. It was I hadn’t even finished it when I knew that I would jump right into this. And my plan was not to go into TV, and there was no way to not do this, really.

Feature flash / Shutterstock.com

‘MR SELFRIDGE’ IS DOING AMAZINGLY WELL? JEREMY PIVEN: Yeah. ARE YOU SURPRISED BY THE RATINGS? DID YOU EXPECT IT TO BE A HIT? JEREMY PIVEN: You know what? I didn’t get ahead of myself and expect... I didn’t know what to expect, I just know that I was just blown away by the talent that I was surrounded by on that show. The whole cast were incredible, Andrew Davies is brilliant, the direction.. I’m very happy. DO PEOPLE TREAT YOU DIFFERENTLY NOW THAT YOU ARE MR SELFRIDGE? JEREMY PIVEN: It’s nice to hear ‘Hey Harry’ instead of ‘Hey Ari’ – it’s nice to switch it over. PEOPLE ARE CALLING ‘MR SELFRIDGE’ THE NEW ‘DOWNTON’ – HOW DOES THAT FEEL? JEREMY PIVEN: Well I think if that is the case, and I don’t know if that is the case, then I willed it to happen because I’ve been such a fan of that show from the start. I just want to say for the record that I liked that show before it was fashionable in the States. I was first! WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR YOU WITH THIS ROLE? JEREMY PIVEN: I think to play a guy who is possibly likeable and accessible but still isn’t faithful to his wife, so that was one of the many challenges. CAN YOU NOW GO BACK INTO SELFRIDGES THESE DAYS? JEREMY PIVEN: I don’t know. I should go back in there. I mean I went there the day of the premiere but it was pretty under the radar.

25

26

SITION TO LONDON? JEREMY PIVEN: I went to school there, I studied at the National Theatre of Great Britain and I studied Shakespeare there. I had a real reference for the place. I think I’ve stalked that culture since I was in university. There was a casting director the National Theatre and every day we would either be studying Shakespeare or an actor would come in from around or we’d have the casting director come in and we would find out about the culture. I asked her -“How would an American actor be able to perform on stage here in the UK?” -- and she said -- “Oh my dear boy, you have to be a star. It’s impossible” -- and I thought -- “Huh. I don’t think it’s impossible. I’m gonna do everything I can to try and come back here and perform. Whether it’s on the stage or whatever.” I think if you’re an actor and you work hard that anything is possible. A LOT OF THE FUN OF THE SHOW IS THE CONTRAST BETWEEN THE AMERICAN AND THE ENGLISH, THAT THE AMERICAN’S ALWAYS PORTRAYED AS VERY BRASH AND THE ENGLISH VERY STAID. JEREMY PIVEN: I think that’s one the beauties of this show. Is you have this pioneer with this can do attitude with these Americans that come in, and there’s something very realistic about the British culture and, you know, or nihilistic or however you want to look at it. And you put those two together, and I think that’s the beauty, part of the beauty of this series of seeing that duality and how he navigates through that. And I think, you know, based on this guy and what we know of him, he willed this to happen, and there was nothing like it at the time at all. And so it’s kind of amazing what actually happened and what transpired. DID ANYONE GIVE YOU A COMPARABLY HARD TIME AS AN AMERICAN COMING INTO BRITISH ON A BRITISH SET? I MEAN, THIS MIGHT BE A LITTLE DELICATE TO ANSWER. DID YOU FEEL A LITTLE RESISTANCE, YOU KNOW, FROM ‘WE DO THINGS THIS WAY, ACTUALLY,’ IN THE PRODUCTION? JEREMY PIVEN: No. It was very interesting because they really not only do they profess to believe in “everyone

s_bukley / Shutterstock.com

ON THE SURFACE, IT JUST SEEMS SO UNLIKELY AS A TOPIC FOR DRAMA – THE FOUNDING OF A SUPERMARKET? JEREMY PIVEN: He actually transformed shopping, and at that time, people didn’t go out and shop. If you had money, you sent for your dressmaker. He was the first person to take, for instance, cosmetics, and put it in the front of the store. At that time, women weren’t wearing rouge and lipstick and all this stuff. It was only worn by prostitutes or women of the stage, which there wasn’t it wasn’t a sought after role for some people. It wasn’t at that time. So women were wearing, you know, skirts down to their shoes, basically, and he empowered them to come in and kind of be whoever they wanted to. It’s actually kind of a great setting and background for a meeting place for a show. WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES AS AN ACTOR TO DO A PERIOD PIECE? JEREMY PIVEN: The irony there is once you play a character for eight years, it’s your job to inhabit the role and play it as authentically as possible. I think what might have happened is they then see you and report on you as if you are this character. I think that comes along with something like having a reference with this guy as a contemporary person. I’ve always been fascinated by period pieces and no-one does it better than the Brits so I just thought count me in. To me, Harry seems closer to me than Ari and that’s the irony. How you you make this leap. He fancies himself a performer. He’s going over to the UK to prove himself. I don’t have to look too far for that. Check, check. I’m fascinated by his story and I hear people talk about Harry when I’m in the UK and they say -- “Oh we heard about Harry Selfridge. He used to bring women into the store and he used to say buy anything you want” -- and then I would defend him as if he were my father and they’d say -- “You don’t know him. Do you know Harry Selfridge? Well let me tell you about him” -- and then I’d give them a history lesson as they would roll their eyes and walk away. He’s very near and dear to my heart. HOW WAS THE PERSONAL TRAN-

is created equal,” they actually live it, so you get this feeling that we’re kind of all in it together, and I was there isn’t a weak link in this entire cast. They’re all kind of brilliant, and any one of them could steal my job at any moment. At every point during the show they’re plotting against me at this moment. Everywhere in the frame, there’s someone that’s doing an amazing job that is very specific, and they don’t take victory laps. They just kind of get on with it, and that’s kind of the culture. WHAT KIND OF REACTIONS ARE YOU GETTING FROM PEOPLE IN THE UK TO YOU PLAYING THIS ROLE? JEREMY PIVEN: No one knew that he was American. He’s so English so that’s a very big surprise to them. One of the things I really love about this is really bringing the two cultures together because I think that we can learn a lot from each other. I really do. I believe a really organic way to do that and to have this American philosophy, ideology sort of existing and navigating through their culture at the turn of the century. I’ve been lucky enough to be the producer on this so I’ve been a part of this journey and they’ve so graciously collaborated with me. I’m really hard on myself. I couldn’t be more proud of the series and I’ve seen every episode of the series. IS THIS LIKE AN AMERICAN ACTOR’S DREAM TO BE IN A PRODUCTION LIKE THIS WITHOUT HAVING TO DO A BRITISH ACCENT?

CL Jeremy Piven JEREMY PIVEN: Well, to be honest with you, I thought it would be amazing. That challenge would have been incredible to go over there and do the accent, but knowing that he’s from the Midwest, as am I, growing up and going to Marshall Field’s where he made his bones — and my mother, you know, grew up going to Marshall Field’s, and we have a history with that place. And so I kind felt connected to him and going to his the store Selfridges, to this day it was voted the best store in the world, and here we are a hundred years later. So I think he was onto something. He transformed Marshall Field’s in Chicago into, you know, what it is today with the big windows, and saw it as theatre. And he was he loved P.T. Barnum, and he thought of himself as a performer. And the store was his theatre, and being on Masterpiece [US TV channel] is like telling a Jewish mother that you’re going to be a doctor. Basically it’s like I’ve made it. HARRY SELFRIDGE DIED DESTITUTE. ARE YOU LEAVING THAT OPEN TO MAYBE ANOTHER SERIES? JEREMY PIVEN: Lucky for us, it’s done so well. His journey is so fascinating. I think that they don’t want to see that happen yet necessarily. I can’t tell you too much but there’s this great teacher, Tim Robbins, the actor, was my teacher growing up. He taught me comedia del arte which I used to play Ari everyday, which is a heightened state of emotion. What you saw is just comedia del arte. People think that that was a documentary but it was actually acting. Tim has this great call -- “Don’t burn your steps” -- and I don’t think they want us ITV, PBS to burn our steps. I think it’s incredibly juice. His journey is wonderful and I think that we can take our time. As you know now, if you’re gonna admire someone’s life, you have to admire their whole life. His life was full and rich and tragic and all those things. So we have a lot to play with. SO IF A SECOND SERIES GOES AHEAD YOU’D BE ON BOARD? JEREMY PIVEN: I certainly hope I have the job, yeah. To be replaced at this point would be very disappointing. [laughs]

CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THE EXTERIOR AND HOW THEY DID THE CGI FOR THE EXTERIOR. JEREMY PIVEN: They went to great pains, first of all, to get it really authentic and right for 1909. And it’s kind of breathtaking to be in there. I mean, the people from Selfridges walked in there, and they couldn’t believe that the marble was actually plastic. We were kind of blown away by it. We shot the exteriors in a place called Kent, and you just have basically the first level of it, and then the rest of it is kind of CGI.

FEW OTHER QUESTIONS, HOW ARE YOU GREEN ENVIRONMENTALLY. JEREMY PIVEN: I’m as green as I possibly could be. To be honest with you , I’d love to have a huge truck but I’m not going to. WHAT DO YOU DRIVE? JEREMY PIVEN: I drive an Audi and I drive a ’77 Ford Bronco. WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP IN SHAPE? JEREMY PIVEN: I’ve been doing yoga for a couple of decades.

CL Relationships

Love in the 21st Century Most couples meet in mundane ways that allow them to get to know each other over time - through school, friends, work or hobbies for example - but if none of these methods is working for you, have you considered modern technology to help you find Mr or Miss Right?! The internet offers dating sites (sometimes free of charge, but often with a monthly subscription) where your profile, containing a photo and other biographical details, as well as a description of the kind of person you are hoping to meet, is made available for others to see. If someone is interested in you, they can contact you by email and start a conversation to find out if you would both like to take the relationship further. There are risks involved in this type of dating – so don’t give out personal identifying information and never fall for sob stories from poor men in far-away places who need you to give them money. When meeting, make it somewhere public and busy and consider taking a friend along, and use a cheap pay-as-you-go phone to make it easier to get rid of unwelcome admirers! Speed dating involves an even number of single men and women meeting in a room set out with tables. Each person is given a numbered badge and a card containing the names of all the people they will date that night. The ‘couple’ numbered 1 sits at table 1 and spends around 5 minutes chatting, with the man moving on to the next table at the sound of a bell. At the end of the evening, every woman will have met every man and all will have marked their cards with the names of people they would like to meet again. If there is a match (i.e. woman A likes man B and vice versa), the dating service will provide them with contact information. A speed dating session takes around two hours and you can expect to meet between ten and fifteen people. The cost is around £20, normally paid in advance through a speed dating website. The dinner date is a variation on the speed date, where 4-8 men and women meet at a restaurant to chat over dinner and get to know one another better. These smaller, more intimate, groups often work better than speed dates as there are others present to help keep the conversation flowing, so it feels less pressurised. At the end of the meal, if you have connected with someone at the table, the host will help you exchange contact information. Modern dating methods may not be the ideal way to meet a new partner, but they do at least open up a world of possibilities!

Asparagus & Lemon Fettuccine

Banana-filled Pancakes with Lyle’s Syrup Drizzle

1 Cook the asparagus in a pan of boiling water for 4–5 minutes until just tender. Remove from the water with a slotted spoon and cut into short lengths. Keep warm.

1 Place the flour in a large bowl, make a well in the centre then crack in the egg and add half of the milk. Beat together, gradually adding the rest of the milk to make a smooth batter.

2 Place 100ml of the asparagus cooking water in a small pan with the lemon juice. Return to the heat and boil rapidly for 5 minutes until reduced and syrupy. Whisk in the olive oil to create an emulsion and season.

2 Heat a splash of the oil in a non-stick medium-sized frying pan. Add a ladleful of batter and swirl to coat the base of the pan thinly. Cook for 30 seconds or so until golden then turn and cook the second side. Repeat to make 8 pancakes.

3 Cook the pasta in boiling water for 4 minutes until tender. Drain and toss the pasta with the asparagus, lemon zest, pine nuts and reduced stock. Season and serve in warm bowls with the grated Grana Padano cheese, if you like. Serves 2 Prepare 5 mins Cook 14 mins

3 Mash together the bananas and icing sugar then roughly stir into the mascarpone along with one of the Lyle’s syrups (golden, chocolate or strawberry). Divide the mixture between the pancakes, tuck in the edges then roll up neatly. Place two pancakes on each serving plate, dust lightly with icing sugar and drizzle with more syrup before serving Serves 4 Prepare 15 mins Cook 15 mins

CL Food

The Food of Love They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, so why not experiment with some tempting titbits this Valentine’s Day? In Japan feeling flirty can become – quite literally – a matter of life or death! Puffer fish is considered to be a great delicacy and an aphrodisiac, but it contains a poisonous gland that is deadly and must be removed before eating! A safer seafood option is the oyster. A favourite with the Romans some oysters are able to change sex repeatedly and so are said to give you the ability to experience the male and female sides of love. For a sophisticated saucy snack you can’t go wrong with asparagus. Served with hollandaise sauce and washed down with champagne it’s sure to pep things up. And do you know where the term ‘honeymoon’ comes from? In Medieval times newlyweds drank mead – a fermented drink made with honey – to sweeten their marriage. But I reckon the ultimate palate pleaser has got to be chocolate. Described by the Aztecs as ‘nourishment of the Gods’, it contains both a relaxing sedative that lowers inhibitions and a stimulant to perk you up. Even better is the news that it is more effective when combined with that other antioxidant, red wine – but don’t have too much, or your suitor may become a snorer! CL Moving Home

Selling your home Guide If you want to avoid a headache then be smart and do some work upfront to make sure your house sells fast. The economy is showing green shoots of recovery and we are told houses are selling. You’d be lucky though to find multiple buyers bidding up a house; sellers are in a competitive market and have to differentiate their property in order to make a sale.

Let’s revisit those famous house selling tips again. 1. Fix up the house Now’s the time! Go throughout the house room by room, and take notes of all the things that need fixing i.e. oil those squeaks, paint the doors, and patch the cracks. Little things matter and they could turn off your buyers. If you noticed them, the buyer will too. Take the time to go around and fix those things one by one; fixing these small problems doesn’t have to be expensive, and yes it will take time and effort but you can always hire someone to do it or save money and do it yourself if you are handy. 2. Decluttering No one wants to buy a messy house. Make sure your house is clean and organized by removing as much clutter as you can, even if you have to store it so the house feels bigger and more spacious. One way of getting an idea on how your home should look is by browsing through magazines.

40

TO ADVERTISE CALL 0800 612 7966

CL Moving Home 3. Clean up Clean faucets and fixtures, remove fingerprints from the light switch covers, clean windows and hoover dog/cat hairs from everywhere including skirting boards. You’ll need to get rid of suspect smells as well; if your pets have had one too many accidents, you might want to think about replacing the affected carpet and underlay. If you are unsure of how your place smells, get your most forthright friend to have a few sniffs and tell you but please don’t have a row with your friend as a result. 4. Improve your home kerb appeal Yes I know I am sounding like the House Doctor but first impressions do count, and for your home the name of the game is kerb appeal. I am not suggesting you spend a lot of money to improve your home; improve the appearance so it looks better than other houses in the street. It all can be done inexpensively. Many buyers will drive by a property before going to view it. 5. The Art of Home Staging Home staging goes beyond decluttering, cleaning and decorating and happens after the steps above. If you feel it a bit daunting then you can always hire a staging professional and believe me when I say that home staging does help sell you house. If you want to give it a try then here are a few things you can do: § Put vases of fresh flowers on tables, a fruit basket on the dining table and arrange colourful cookbooks on the worktops. § Make sure the house smells fresh and airy; a good tip is to bake some brownies or brew coffee before a showing to give the house a pleasant aroma. § Make sure the temperature is right; you want the potential buyer to feel comfortable. § Make sure rooms are properly lit by opening the window treatments or turning on lights. § Arrange items on shelves, bookcases and the fireplace mantel to bring attention to predetermined areas. 6. Ask the right price I know it’s very difficult to sell your home for less than you expected but you can’t insist on an unrealistic price if you want to sell your home in today’s market. To find the right price, you can check other homes for sale in your area by checking web sites like Zoopla or get a valuation. You will be in a better position to compete against other sellers if you are flexible on the price.

8. Choose a good agent Remember you’re in charge and a lot of money is being dealt with so be discerning; if you shop around for clothes and furniture why not do the same when it comes to choosing a estate agent. One way of determining whether an agent is going to market your property effectively is to look at the details of other properties on their books; see how they’ve presented them. I’m sure you will have seen (and winced at) pictures of houses for sale with unwashed dishes in the sink, clothes on the floor and bathrooms in need of a good scrub. If you follow these techniques you can sell your house that much quicker and even get more money for your home; now would you refuse a few extra pennies? Of course not…

A frosty reception As we progress through the year our thoughts are drawn to spring. The days are gradually getting longer, though it’s hardly noticeable because the temperatures are still very cold. People think of February as ‘nearly spring’ but in fact it can be a much colder month than December or January at times. That said, the cold weather is just the stimulus some bulbs need in order for them to burst into bloom. Take the snowdrop for example: this tiny flower with its delicate head looks its best this month, especially when planted in large drifts. Galanthus (snowdrops) nat-

will form the most beautiful carpet of white. Try and visit an open garden this month and you’ll see what I mean. Choose a clear day when the sky is an intense blue. Take a waterproof rug to lie down on and see the world from the woodland floor, just like a snowdrop would. It’s a beautiful place to be (and to take photographs from). If it’s not frozen solid, the earthy smell of the humus rich soil is wonderful and there will often be a layer of crunchy leaves still remaining from autumn, partially decomposed which add to the aroma. When you get up close and personal with plants in this way it really gives you a chance to appreciate their beauty. Lift up the little nodding head and see the loveliness within. If you are inspired by these wonderful scenes, now is the perfect time to buy and plant snowdrops, so why not add some to a tub, or plant a swathe by the front door? That way even when it’s icy outside you’ll be welcoming guests with a less frosty reception.

Jobs to do this month Cutting down – I’m not talking about the post Christmas calorie intake, but about the herbaceous perennials. Chop them down now, as far as you can go so that the new shoots will be free to grow next month. Hedge your bets – overgrown evergreen hedges can be cut at the end of the month. Do one side this year and one in a couple of years time. It will look pretty awful until it re grows (in about 2 years) but it will be worth the wait. Compost all the waste you create in the garden, but remember to chop it up well. Consider investing in a shredder if you create a lot of bulky waste. You’ll be impressed with the quality of compost you can produce. Use last year’s compost to lay on the top of the soil around shrubs and roses (known as mulch) Until next time, Happy gardening, LEE WWW.COVEREDLOCAL.CO.UK

The Children Love Dressing up” says Mark. “When they first walk into the room, hear the enchanted music playing, smell the flowers, see the mini forest and rock pool with giant mushroom they get very excited. “We use bubble machines and carefully placed butterflies to direct their gaze” continues Mark. “Which transforms their expressions into priceless wonder and amazement.” After the shoot the parents return to the gallery and viewing room to enjoy a presentation on the studio’s 90” cinema projector screen. I’M LEARNING NOT TO BE SO HARD ON MYSELF BY SARA CROMPTON

She’s has recently jetted back from Barbados and now Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh is busy promoting her debut solo album ‘Centre Stage’. The album of covers features Kimberley’s very first solo track release ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away.’ Kimberley started recording the album in Stockholm with producers Per Magnusson and David Kreuger over the summer after signing with Decca Records. The video for ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’ also features Kimberley’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ partner Pasha Kovalev. The 31-year-old’s decision to release a solo disc comes after Girls Aloud’s recent reunion. The girls scored a No.2 hit with comeback single ‘Something New’ and their greatest hits album ‘Ten’ went top ten in the album charts. Kimberley launched her career as part of Girls Aloud on ITV talent show ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ and has

since enjoyed success in West End shows like ‘Shrek’. She recently said of her solo project: “It comprises songs from the musicals reworked and brought into this century. “It’s turned out really well and I feel really inspired and hopefully it’ll be a success. I felt like I’d done so much work with my voice as well – so I want to be able to showcase it.” Here, Kimberley talks going solo, getting emotional and lifts the lid on the Girls Aloud tour.... CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR DEBUT SOLO ALBUM! IS IT SCARY GOING IT ALONE? KIMBERLEY: I think I should feel more scared than I do! I think because I feel comfortable doing music and I’ve put the groundwork in so it’s not as scary. Plus I’m not directly competing with anyone else…but it’s still daunting to be out there on my own, putting music out there and seeing what people think. But I am proud of it.

DID APPEARING IN ‘SHREK’ HELP? KIMBERLEY: If I hadn’t have done ‘Shrek’, I think I’d be terrified right now! But because I know I can do it I’m able to stay calm. IS THERE ANYONE WHO YOU’D LIKE TO LISTEN TO GIVE YOUR CD TO, AND MAYBE GET FEEDBACK FROM? KIMBERLEY: I guess when I was growing up it was people like Elaine Page and Barbara Streisand. When I got back home [from holiday] on Sunday morning I listened to Elaine’s Radio 2 show and she played one of my songs! It was amazing! WHAT’S THE MOST MEANINGFUL TRACK ON ‘CENTRE STAGE’? KIMBERLEY: I think I have to go with ‘On My Own’. There’s so many

CL Kimberley Walsh different memories attached to it for me, from doing ‘Les Mis’ as a child, to then obviously doing ‘The Passions of Girls Aloud’ [in 2008]. It’s my all time favourite musical. DO YOU THINK YOU’RE MAKING SHOW TUNES COOLER? KIMBERLEY: I saw a few tweets the other day saying that. I grew up listening to musical theatre, and I know I wasn’t cool for doing it, but I didn’t care. I was quite a strong character in that way. But seeing fans that would never have gone to a musical who came to ‘Shrek’ and Tweeted me to say “I’m going to see some other shows, I’ve started singing and I’m in my school’s musical” – it’s great. WHO DID YOU PLAY IN ‘LES MIS’? KIMBERLEY: I played the young Cosette when I was 12, and then for ‘The Passions’ I actually sang on my own, so I kind of wanted to re-do it, and do it well – because I’ve improved a lot through doing Shrek. DO YOU REALLY FEEL LIKE YOUR VOICE HAS CHANGED? KIMBERLEY: Yeah, completely – after this long you would never think you’d get to 31 and still be learning how to use your voice – but it’s like an instrument, and I never had any training so I didn’t know how to use it. So it’s literally like a revelation for me! DO YOU RECKON THERE’S MORE TO COME AS WELL?

KIMBERLEY: I hope so. I think you can just keep pushing it – these songs are pretty full on vocally so I don’t know how much further I can push it but the more I keep singing the stronger it’ll be so. DOES THAT MEAN SOMETIMES YOU LOOK BACK AT OLD GIRLS ALOUD VIDEOS AND THINK YOU COULD SING IT SO MUCH BETTER NOW? KIMBERLEY: Yeah. It’s just knowing how to use your voice properly and I just didn’t really know back then. I was so young. ARE YOU TRYING TO KEEP YOUR ‘STRICTLY’ BODY AND KEEPING UP THE EXERCISE? KIMBERLEY: No, I thought I would exercise on holiday, but I just didn’t have the strength! I just chilled out. ARE YOU BACK INTO IT NOW? KIMBERLEY: Not yet, but I will be soon. I’m debating whether to train this week, or just wait till Girls Aloud start the tour rehearsals next week! HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE UPCOMING GIRLS ALOUD TOUR? KIMBERLEY: Beyond Excited! It’s pretty big, I can’t believe some of the things I’ve seen, the plans look amazing! We’ve got the whole catalogue of songs from over the last 10 years so it’s gonna be a spectacle – it’s not gonna be tame in any shape or form! But that’s all I’m allowed to say.

WHEN DID YOU LAST THINK “I’M SO LUCKY”? KIMBERLEY: All the time! I’m a very lucky girl. When I was on holiday with my family and we arrived at the villa in Barbados. I was like “how has these even happened?!” It’s a bit different to Bournemouth, which is where I used to go on holiday as a child. My family were so grateful, they wrote me a poem to thank me which really made me cry. WAS THERE AN ELEMENT OF RELIEF WHEN STRICTLY WAS FINALLY OVER? KIMBERLEY: Yeah, to a point, I think I couldn’t have carried on another week. I would’ve loved to, but I physically couldn’t have, and I loved it, but it got to the point where it was time for it to come to an end. The constant nervous energy, the constant fear – I was like “I need to breathe for a minute!” but then after a few days I wanted to be dancing again! WHAT ABOUT OTHER CELEB REALITY SHOWS, LIKE SPLASH! THE DIVING SHOW, WOULD YOU DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT? KIMBERLEY: No, I would never do something that I didn’t think I could do an alright job of it. I’m not up for that! With dancing I didn’t know how good I’d be, but I knew there was a chance I’d be ok. WHAT IS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU’VE LEARNT IN ADULT LIFE?

Featureflash / Shutterstock.com

KIMBERLEY: I’m trying to not be so hard on myself when it comes to work. I’m really tough on myself, and I think doing strictly really brought that home. Always pushing myself, never being satisfied, always thinking “I can do better”…and I need to just chill out. WHAT’S THE BIGGEST COMPLIMENT SOMEONE COULD GIVE YOU? KIMBERLEY: When I get compliments from women, it’s always a bigger deal than men. When women saying they like and respect what I do, it means so much to me. ENDS

OPEN MORNING Saturday 16th March 9.30am12 noon

Gung Hei Fat Choi! Celebrate the Chinese New Year on 10 February 2013 Chinese New Year is the biggest celebration of the year for Chinese people around the world. In China, the festival is marked by a three-day public holiday. Also called the Spring Festival, it is a special time for families to get together, and millions of people travel home from their places of work or study.

doors and windows of the house are opened to let the old year out and firecrackers are set off. The next day, friends and families exchange gifts of food, flowers and sweets. Children are given money in red paper envelopes. There are fireworks and elaborate lion and dragon dances featuring beautifully coloured costumes and puppets. People try to forget grudges and wish peace and happiness to everyone.

Chinese people prepare for the New Year celebrations by cleaning their houses from top to bottom. The idea is to clear away any bad luck and make way for good luck in the year ahead. People also buy new clothes and have their hair cut. They decorate their homes with red and gold paper decorations and lights. Red is a lucky colour in China, while gold represents wealth. Debts must be paid off before the end of the year, otherwise it is said that you will be short of money in the following year. People also bring plants and fruit trees into their homes, especially kumquat plants and peach blossom.

The date of the New Year is calculated using the lunar calendar and can fall any time between late January and the middle of February. A complete cycle of the lunar calendar lasts 60 years and consists of five cycles of 12 years. Each of the 12 years is named after a different animal – rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Legend has it that Buddha asked all the animals on earth to join him for a party. Only 12 turned up, and as a reward, he named a year after each one in the order they arrived. Each animal has certain characteristics which people born in that year are said to share.

On New Year’s Eve, families gather together for a celebratory feast. They eat sticky rice dumplings to bring good luck and happiness. It is a time to be thankful for the year that is ending and to remember family members who have died. At midnight, the

2013 will be the Year of the Snake. People born in this year are said to be romantic, wise and charming. They are good at making and saving money, but can be stingy. Famous snakes include Audrey Hepburn, Bob Dylan and Brad Pitt! By Alex Brown

CL Book Review

Daughter of Smoke and Bone Laini Taylor Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.

You can follow us on Twitterjust search for @coveredlocal

So begins this novel which really falls into the category young adult (YA) fantasy fiction yet manages to elevate itself through the sheer inventiveness of the plot. It begins in Prague and is the story of teenage art student Karou. She’s in college and has issues with her boyfriend. So far so YA. But this novel quickly develops into something strange and beautiful. Where does Karou go when she disappears from the city without warning, on strange ‘errands’? How can she speak so many languages? Why does her long, bright blue hair never seem to need dyeing? Karou is a girl who transcends two worlds; the real world, and the place she calls ‘Elsewhere’, where she was raised by chimaeras – strange hybrid creatures. But her secret world and all it contains is now threatened by deceptively beautiful interlopers. And Karou’s peculiar fate is to fall in love with one of them. There is a saying that there are no really new ideas in literature and Taylor’s novel bears similarities to Romeo and Juliet, not unlike the Twilight series, but it’s so much richer, more inventive and colourful. It will appeal to fans of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. Karou is certainly as spirited as Lyra - and with an equally confused heritage. To whom should she remain loyal – her adoptive father or her murderous soul mate? Daughter of Smoke And Bone starts small and grows, taking you on an imaginative journey of forbidden love, intrigue and divided loyalty. Sometimes it’s worth taking a break from your regular genres and dipping into something new. With Valentine’s Day approaching this may just be one of those times…and it certainly makes a change from a clichéd ‘They sailed off into the sunset and lived happily ever after…’

Skellig – David Almond Published in 1998, this unforgettable book achieved instant cult status and is now rightly recognised as a children’s classic. It is often taught in junior and secondary schools, but if you really want your child to live out the magic it offers, catch them early so they can read uninterrupted and absorbed. The story itself is simple. Shortly after the birth of his baby sister, and while her health hangs in the balance, Michael finds Skellig in the garage of the ramshackle old house that he and his parents have just moved into. But who – or what – is he? Slowly Michael begins to find out: with gifts of aspirin, beer, cod liver oil and Chinese takeaway, he discovers a friend. Almond’s prose is beautifully understated, and straightforward enough to capture the interest of the reader before leading into passages of lyrical and emotional intensity. Death is ever present, and dealt with sensitively enough for young readers to understand and relate to, whilst the message is all about life, and love, and hope. If you haven’t read it, buy it now.

FEEDING WILD BIRDS

F

eeding birds in the garden can provide an enormous amount of pleasure and is a hugely popular activity for many people. Feeding birds is also an excellent way of encouraging and educating children about wildlife. The RSPB recommends feeding all year and warns that cold winters can kill a lot of birds through starvation. The smaller the bird, the more likely it is to be affected by prolonged winter cold. Robins, Wrens and Blue Tits can be affected by cold snaps, but Starlings and Blackbirds remain unaffected. It is therefore important that we help these birds as much as we can. Putting food out not only provides essential nutrition, it also encourages more birds to visit your garden. To attract the greatest variety of species place several different types of feeder and foods around the garden. We have a large selection of both at Pets Galore Coulsdon. There are a wide range of feeders available to cater for the feeding habits of different types of birds. Peanut Feeders, Seeder Feeders, Niger Seed Feeers, Cage Feeders (to stop the squirrels!) and Fat Feeders are amoungst the many available. The range of seeds and feeds available can sometimes be overwhelming. There is the all round favourite Wild Bird Seed which is specifically blended to appeal to a wide variety of birds. This is suitable for all round feeding. Peanuts

66

are packed with proteins and oils, they appeal to a wide variety of birds and providing an excellent source of energy. Black Sunflower Seeds are also suitable for year round feeding and appeal to a wide variety of birds particularly chaffinches, greenfinches and house sparrows. Sunflower Hearts are packed with oils and proteins, full of energy and provide maximum substence. They are 100% edible, providing no waste and appeal to all birds. Energy boost feeds are particularly appreciated during the colder months and the nesting season when birds are raising chicks. Fat balls, Suet Pellets, Suet Blocks and Suet Filled Coconuts are all extremely popular. Fresh water should be provided at all times, in a shallow container so birds can drink and bathe without danger of drowning. All the feeders, seeds and nuts mentioned in this article are available at Pets Galore Coulsdon so please pop in to browse our selection, we are open 7 days a week and are always happy to help. Or why not call us and take advantage of our free local delivery service and we’ll bring your order to you !

The Golden boys Harvey and Logan are two gorgeous golden retrievers, they belong to Kayleigh; one of the groomers at top to tail. If you pop into the shop most the time you will see either of them lounging about or maybe in Logan’s case causing some mischief. Harvey joined the family in 2006, both his mum and dad were show dogs, his mum Jazmin also won best brood bitch in 2007 and 2008, so we can see why he is so handsome and truly wonderful! Harvey settled into the family straight away, he is lovely and cuddly and always greets you with a wagging tail in the morning! He loves his walks, treats, his squeaky toys and teddies but the thing he is ready for all the time is to cuddle up on the sofa and snuggle! Harvey is a gentle giant, he is unbelievably soppy and so chilled out! After having such an amazing dog in Harvey, the Knellar family decided that a new addition would be perfect! So along came Logan in 2012... When it was Logan’s turn to join the family the breeder had moved to Holland! But still there was no other option than to go to Holland and get him, a little Dutch puppy! Logan cam home and settled in like he’d been there forever; Logan is crazy about 99% of the time but just like Harvey he loves a good cuddle and can’t be stopped from climbing all over you for them. One of Logan’s favourite things to do is chase his tail, he will sit and suddenly he pounces on his tail and shows it who is boss! Harvey and Logan both got along well from the start, Harvey put up with his ears being chewed and being pulled about from puppy Logan but he couldn’t have been better with him! Logan loves Harvey so much, he hates to be separated from him for even 5 minutes and Harvey ...sometimes craves for those 5 minutes! Both boys are great and the family would be lost without them They truly are the golden boys!
