Letter from the editor T

he L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival came to excite us and then eluded from us in a matter of days. With the new trends stocked on retail shelves directly from the runways, it’s hard to believe that the winter months are already upon us. Where did the days of summer go? But with the winter trends comes lots of layering, a personal favourite, with coats and scarves being wardrobe staples of comfort and cosiness. The colder months also remind us to embrace our denim, and with retailers claiming they’re the ultimate denim destination and with denim fashion shows taking place nationally and internationally, we decided to pay homage to the most perfect creation made from cotton, with our photo shoot with denim brand, M.L. Denim.

Like the emerging designers who took to the stage at LMFF, we are debuting on the magazine runway. Our first issue is giving you a taste of what’s to come in COVET, with big future issues already in the works. Here at COVET we invite you to crave, desire and indulge in the luxurious pleasures in life, and we would love to hear what you have to say, so send us an email with story ideas and any feedback. We acquired this heritage-listed antique stable about 18 months ago and have transformed the space into a unique work area and consultation showroom. I won my current Dior watch in the Caulfield Designer Award Competition in 2004 so it has a special place in my heart and I’ll never get rid of it. The crystal watch has a little more bling, which I love.

Jean Paul Gaultier ‘Le Mâle’ aftershave This is a classic. I love wearing it every now and then as it takes me to another place. The scent reminds me of friends past and present.

Di Bella Coffee Roasting House I found this awesome roasting house in North Melbourne soon after acquiring the JASONGRECH Style Office. The coffee is rich and creamy and the service staff don’t take themselves too seriously. I only have one coffee a day so it must be a good one; otherwise it’s not worth it.

Dsquared² Brand Jeans I live in jeans and Dsquared² jeans are my favourite, they fit really well and I love how they shape my butt.

Jemma Naked Treaties I try hard not to eat sweets so these organic, vegan, raw, gluten, dairy and sugar free treaties are awesome. Perfect for when I start to feel rundown and tired as they give me instant energy without the sugar and bad ingredients. My favourite are the superfood truffles.

Fabrics/Laces Fabrics and laces make my body tingle. I import most of laces for the JASONGRECH White label from Sophie Hallette and Riechers Marescot in France (the house that supplies to Dior, Chanel, Valentino and Elle Saab) and there’s no other lace like it in the world. The detail and hours of handwork that goes into the beading is phenomenal. The last lace I purchased has metal chain and bra slides sewn onto it!

Footscray I love the suburb I live in; Harry and I purchased our single fronted Victoria home in a beautiful tree-lined street in 2000 and quickly renovated it to the house of our dreams. Footscray is an amazing colourful suburb full of atmosphere, interesting people and yummy Asian Food. I never know what I am going to find or who I am going to meet every time I walk into the centre. Footscray has some amazing parks and it’s going through some major changes so I am hoping its vintage charm remains.

M

elbourne’s newest label to hit the urban fashion scene is founded by bite and friendship, with the unlikely combination proving to be a recipe for style success. The White Wolf is for the guy who wants to look good and feel good in what he’s wearing, for the girl who likes to wear her boyfriend’s t-shirts, and the perfect label for anyone wanting to sink their fashionable paws into something new. “The t-shirt is our canvas”, says Declan ‘Decca’ McGovern, one of the four designers of The White Wolf who stars in the US film, The Potential Inside released later this year, with the brand exhibiting art in its garments. Balibo actor Nathan Phillips, engineer Andrew Bradley, more commonly known as AB, and Vicious Threads designer and director of Speaker TV, Ivan Gomez, are the other collaborators which make up this wolf pack. The label has been in the making since 2006, back in Venice Beach, which ties the label together. “Nathan had a dream of a wolf coming to him that was about to attack him and somehow he just overpowered it and came to be at peace with the wolf. The funny thing is, two days later he was playing rugby on Venice beach and found a wolf figurine which makes up the brand’s logo,” says Declan. Upholding the heritage of the brand and surrounding it by the theme of friendship, the catalogue was shot in Venice Beach, Malibu and Hollywood – sacred sites for the guys – as well as on location at friends’ warehouses. Their look book was styled by highly sought-after L.A. stylist, Cassandra Kellogg, and photographed by Lauren Stratton. The brand echoes friendship and stories, “we’re just here to create our own story and grow forward,” says Declan. American model Alexander Rodriguez is the face of the label, who you may recognise as Katy Perry’s love interest in her music video clip for ‘Hot and Cold’, with Rodriguez growing up with the singer in Santa Barbara. Working in fashion, advertising and commercials back at home; Rodriguez carries the same flame of friendship the label encompasses. “It’s different to the commercial stuff I do in L.A. It’s such a good company to be a part of. I see it as a fun, organic, clothing line with all the friends just wearing the stuff”, he says. Other celebrities spotted wearing the t-shirts include Rhys Uhlich, who is another face of the label and well as the official ladies wear model for the brand, Jana Banker. Brodie young, Holly Valance, Tammin Sursok and the boys from Melbourne-based rock band, Juke Kartel, also wear the brand. The White Wolf is also crossing its paws to line up Tommy Lee in the future.

The current range features an urban colour palette of black, white, khaki and olive greens and blue, featuring in their range of crew neck and v-neck tees, which are available in slim fit and slouch fit. Designs feature Indian tassels and feathers, The White Wolf official logo tee which is their ‘Paw Print’ tee and a ‘Duran Duran’ tee featuring a hungry wolf, with many of the designs heavily influenced by the AmericanCalifornian culture. Everything is locally produced, even their high-quality leather jackets which are a luxurious addition to the label, constructed using Italian leather. The White Wolf also features a denim range such as the ‘Flesh Wound Jeans’, with their denim range featuring navy and black washes, as well as a new wash they’ve named ‘vintage black’, which according to Declan is “like you’ve been wearing them from back in the day”, bringing you back to that feeling of that much-loved pair of jeans. A standout addition to the collection is the leathertrimmed hoody, which features a leather embellished hood and pocket details, which is unlike anything else on the fashion scene, with the label making the ultimate fashion statement. “The White Wolf is different because we don’t follow trends,” says Declan, “this is what we like to do. This is what we like to wear. This is the style we want. It’s something unique. It’s something different.” The free-spirited label takes concepts of life and art and projects this into the clothing, with the designs being more of an artistic influence rather than a trend, with the artistic development expected to expand in their future collections. “We’re all on the same page with art, ideas and friendship, that’s what ties us together and binds to make what you see now with this initial White Wolf range,” says Andrew. The label is also hoping to expand in their designs for women, particularly through the introduction of a jewellery line as engineered by Andrew, encompassing oxidised silver, bronze and copper in the designs, rarely used in the production of fashion jewellery. The range is currently stocked in boutiques around Melbourne; with the first production of the new winter range out early April, and soon to be available online. The White Wolf invites you to come on a journey with the pack. Step outside of your den and enjoy the adventure.

M

odelling is an industry where first impressions count, and when you first see a model take to the runway, you can instantly know if she has what it takes to make it in the world of fashion and beauty. With a signature strut, seductive eyes and alluring personality, Melbourne model Lucy McIntosh, is definitely making waves on the modelling front, as the official face and body of the latest Cotton On and Cotton On Body campaigns, whilst also taking to the runway at this year’s L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival. “L’Oréal has been lots of fun and a very good experience. It’s a good buzz. I love doing shows because of the atmosphere and being on stage presenting different looks and collections,” says the Chadwick model. Lucy finds her modelling career surreal, yet humbling to know that someone who owns a brand wants her to represent them, and is dedicated in taking her job seriously. “You have to be dedicated to yourself,” she says. “It is important to look after your body and your mind. A good model is confident in how she holds herself on a shoot, on a runway and talking to people. You have to know yourself and believe in yourself.”

It is through this mindset that Lucy has been able to make it in the industry, crowned Australia’s first Fashion TV Diamond Model last year. She also looks towards her role models of Miranda Kerr and Jess Hart for inspiration to succeed. Lucy has often been likened to Miranda Kerr, with her ‘Kerr’ factor hopefully seeing her through the industry. “I look at Miranda Kerr and Jess Hart because they’re close to home, and they’ve made it. I look at Miranda and think ‘wow’, her body is amazing and she’s gorgeous, she’s someone I look up to, and Jess is confident and beautiful, she has put in the time and effort and the work to get where she is.” While Lucy has put the time and dedication into her modelling, she is also dedicated to making her longdistance relationship work with Black Eyed Peas DJ, Poetnamelife, with the couple making the effort to commute between countries, amongst tours and demanding schedules. Lucy is taking her modelling experience in her stride, enjoying the opportunities that come her way and where it will take her. “I wouldn’t mind getting into TV at some stage or presenting. Modelling gives me the opportunity to meet new people in the industry. I’ll take a hold of anything that I can.”

’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival graced Melbourne with the season’s hottest trends this autumn/winter at the official L’Oréal Paris Runways. Wardrobe must-haves and desirable beauty looks have landed, and COVET has collaborated everything you need to crave, desire and indulge in, this chilly, fashionable season.

The L’Oréal Paris runways highlighted the beauty basics to embrace this season, with vintage-glam inspired looks.

Remember this name and make sure you have him in your wardrobe. This ever-talented, budding designer is on everyone’s must-have list, for his attention to quality, detail and tailoring only the elite of designers can achieve. Dion Lee received the 2010 LMFF Designer Award presented by Woolmark, along with a $10,000 cheque and the opportunity to build his network of international contacts in either Florence or Paris. Lee’s current autumn/winter collection encompasses his attention to detail and mastery of structure and precision, producing feminine and edgy garments with origami pleats and folds. His colour palette this season is going back to basic and neutral colours, with winter whites and detailed embellishment coupled to produce his standout designs.

From the Catwalk to your Closet

Autumn/winter can always guarantee elegant, sophisticated and feminine fashion for the ladies, with tailored and sharp suits for the men. It’s a stray away from the casual summer look of dressing down to cool down, with layering being on the forefront of fashion this season. Following on from the snow season’s trends in Europe and America last year, Australian’s should be prepared for the ultimate fashion fix, with so many trends to pick and choose from, and only a few cold months to embrace them in. 24

Make me up, before I go-go

On the beauty scene, defined and shapely eyebrows complement thick Egyptian-style eye-lined eyes. Flawless faces have washed away that summer glow, and have lightly blushed and contoured cheekbones, contrasted with standout stained lips, in dark berry hues and crimson seductive shades. This season, hair trends are experimental with effortless styles, which create elegance to any outfit. Side swept ponytails, wispy fringes and flirtatious curls, twisted knots and braids, and slight quiffs and beehives are all proving to be the successful styles for a perfect hair day this frosty season.

The first lady was a no-show front row, however other fashionistas and socialites were in the media hotspot. Festival Ambassadors, Miriam and Olivia Nervo supported the week of events, as well as Ruby Rose, Pia Miller and budding actress Sibylla Deen who were amongst those seated front-row. American socialite, fashionista and star from ‘The City’, Whitney Port, rocked Federation Square at Target Rocks Red Market, and the Myer runway was the place to see and to be seen, attracting prolific names such as beauties Laura Dundovic and Rebecca Twigley, Geoffrey Edelsten and wife Brynne and Jennifer Hawkins and Kris Smith on the runway.

From school teacher to super model, what provoked the change? It’s funny, and everyone is always freaked out at the life change, but it’s just the way I live I guess. I live a bit of a gypsy lifestyle and am always throwing myself into new things. We only get one crack at this life, so why not have a go at as many things as you can? I guess I just opened myself up to anything that came my way, the supermodel thing did and I threw myself in the ring. How would you describe the experience of being a part of Make Me a Supermodel and winning the title? Reality TV is far from reality, but it was a fun experience nonetheless. I guess I went into the competition with the fortunate position of not needing to win as I already had a job that I loved and felt privileged to be in. I don’t think I was the best model on the show, but I guess there is more to success than being good at what you do – it’s how you go about doing it and I guess some people dug my approach and attitude to it all. What is your most memorable gig as a model? I guess my most memorable gig is working with my close mates and local brand Kiss Chacey over in New York last year. Its just very rewarding working with people you know and respect and being able to watch a brand grow and hopefully contribute to that in some way. Do you have a routine to always look good? I don’t have a routine no, but I do have an obsession for the ocean. I make sure I throw myself in the water at least once a day, whether it’s at my local St Kilda beach in the middle of winter or possibly somewhere a little more tropical. I do it for the feeling it gives me and I think it is the best possible way to keep looking healthy and fresh. I should bottle a bit of St. Kilda water and sell it – it’s probably better for you than some of the other stuff they market. The only products I trust enough to put on my skin are those belonging to a local brand called INDAH, not only do I love the name, but their products are all natural and aimed at surfers who are out in the elements. You came up with the idea of the Bond shoot for the issue, what do you have in common with 007? I have very little in common with the old Jimmy Bond, although, like most men, I’d like to think I’m a bit of a Casanova. I’m not though. Guns scare me. What does 2010 hold for you? Hopefully I’ll be happy and healthy, maybe on a couple of billboards, and in a flick or two. I am fortunate enough to have just signed with a management team in the U.S. who have a few good films already in preproduction and it looks like I’ll have a role in at least two over there early this year. Now all I have to do is work on my American accent!

ACTING HUMAN Nathan Phillips on his movie roles and life outside the silver screen. Words: Monika Pilekic Photography: Anthony Licuria

N

athan Phillips wanted to be a lawyer when he was little, “I wanted to help the poor people, then I learned about the ins and outs of the business and I couldn’t handle the truth!” he says, but then the school stage called him, being this actors’ first break. The IF Award nominee has since left his school stage and has worked on Neighbours and films such as Wolf Creek, he has worked alongside Samuel L. Jackson on Snakes on a Plane and most recently helped capture the blood, sweat and tears in Balibo. “I was in awe of the story,” Phillips, 29, says of Balibo, with his portrayal of Malcolm Rennie being amongst his most memorable roles. “I loved learning about the life of journalists and these young men and the history between Australia and East Timor.” In order to prepare for his roles, Phillips starts by “reading the script over and over and over, then over again”. When portraying an individual, the actor speaks to friends and family to gain insight into his character, researching the time period, listening to music, and wearing the clothes to get him into gear.

When not acting, Phillips enjoys travelling, working on his fashion label, The White Wolf, and working on his production company, Sons of Outlaws. He also enjoys photography and surfing. “I always find the ocean washes anything away after a days work”, he says. It seems Phillips will be spending a lot of time washing away a few days worth of hard work in the ocean this year, with his busy 2010 filled with filming and acting schedules already in play. “I’m in a new Indi-USA film called Quit where I play a happy hippy with a Charles Manson persona, and I am also in an Aussie flick, Summer Coda, which is a beautiful story about life in Mildura, starring alongside Rachel Taylor, Alex Dimitriades, Suzie Porter and Angus Samson”, says Nathan, with the actor keeping himself busy on international and national shores. This year also sees Phillips directing his first film, Prisoners of Society, with his production company making another short film, Post Apocalyptic Man, which we can expect to be full of stunts, action and drama.

“Creative choices with fictitious characters are so much fun, with the freedom allowing my imagination to take flight”, he says of his other roles. “I find I can keep my characters clothes sometimes and years later if I find myself wearing it, a lot of wonderful and crazy memories float back.”

hile the weather in Cleveland, Ohio is dark and gloomy with snow-covered grounds, and looks like anything but spring weather, there is hope of spring coming soon, with the spring/summer collection of clothes and accessories starting to make their way from the runway into our malls. Even though the weather isn’t matching the fashion trends as yet, it doesn’t mean the yellow color of sunshine isn’t shining inside. With the new season approaching us, you must ask, what’s hot and what’s not? While you can Google spring/summer 2010 fashion trends and see yourself faced with thousands of websites, it’s time to take it to the stores and see for yourself what is so last season and what your season must haves are.

The fall season has carried the bandage skirt into the spring fashion trend alert. They seem to be a hot item to have, seen throughout stores such as BCBG, Express, and Arden B. BCBG refers to these skirts as ‘power skirts’, and I can’t agree more. The versatile skirt can be paired up with a white T or a blouse, a leather jacket for a more urban look or a blazer for work. The colors are bright, bright, and bright, everything from turquoise and hot pink to neon yellow. I suggest grabbing one in every color! The boyfriend blazers were a hit in the fall with the trend carrying itself into spring. It’s an item that can be worn with anything it seems. Pair it with slacks for work, skinny jeans for a night out on the town, skirts or shorts for a casual look. What’s great about the boyfriend blazer still flowing into the spring is the school spirit/preppy look. I’m not talking about the plaid school skirts however; so let’s not channel the beginning of Britney Spears. Striped t-shirts have made their way into stores, which is something that many people can easily wear, and wear many ways. I have a feeling that the striped shirts will be a big hit with people with the ease and versatility of this wardrobe basic. Let’s not forget about white button-ups, they are seen everywhere it seems. But it’s not your typical white button-ups, these have details on them to add a little flair compared to something your mother would wear. Anything from ruffles to built-in necklaces seems to be a popular trend in stores.

Denim never fails as a trend with everyone loving his or her denim. Let’s think back to a few years ago when the ripped jeans were big a trend, well guess what; they are back! Stores pretty much everywhere are carrying a selection of destroyed denim. I’m sure parents will be making comments to their children when they start buying these, saying, “I could have made those for you. Why did you pay for those?” This trend is something that only translates to the younger generation of consumers it seems. Also, say hello to the white denim that I have been seeing in stores lately, which I feel will be a great investment for many. And if you have the ability to not get your whites dirty, more props to you! Otherwise, stock up on your Tide Bleach. When the weather starts actually looking and feeling like spring, people are going to be busting out dresses and I couldn’t be more excited! Whatever style you are after, a shop out there will have that perfect dress for you. Dresses are a hot trend this spring/summer, so stock up! Everything from shirtdresses to jersey dresses to dresses with cutouts, are all readily available to be taken into a great closet. Don’t shy away from prints either, prints were hot on the runway and will be hot with the average American. Think of it as a built in accessory to your outfit. While the runway is fashion’s weather channel, forecasting the season ahead, there have been certain runway trends which haven’t translated here in America, at least in Cleveland, Ohio. Hot pants will not be a hit, even though your regular shorts are staple summer pieces. The jumpsuit is also another style considered a trend for the season, however has been seen minimally in stores. Not everyone can pull off the jumpsuit, it seems to either a hit or miss, but it seems mostly a miss, sorry guys. Feathered skirts? Yes, they’ve had their flight on the runway, but not here. While it may look great on the catwalk, for the everyday American, we’d rather see it, rather than wear it.

picked up my first camera when I was fifteen. It was a Polaroid camera and was at my granddad’s house, and I started taking photos just for fun. In November 2008, I purchased my camera, and decided to do photography as a profession because I had some more time on my hands and I decided that I would like to do something that I enjoy. APL Photography officially opened in May 2009, with its launch at White Charlie. I decided to call it APL because my name is Anthony Paul Licuria, and I thought it had a bit of a ring to you. APL’s main focus is fashion and events, which both include celebrity snapping, and weddings. My main credits to date is my portfolio of celebrity photographs, such as Fran Drescher, Serena Williams, Matthew Newton and Vince Colosimo to name a few. I also do a lot of event photography, so I am one of the main photographers in Melbourne for event photography when it comes to launches or nightclubs. Last year I took photos at the L’Oréal Melbourne Fashion Festival, which was one of the highlights that made me want to do photography, because it was a different type of atmosphere that allowed me to zone out of my everyday life and focus purely on the runway. APL is different because we try our best to make sure that all the photos are better than each other. At the same time we’re very efficient. For event photography, the photos are uploaded the next day. We make sure that the photos are crisp and professional, making the client feel like they want to come back to that venue to have good photos taken.

Anthony Licuria The man behind the lens. I do new portfolios or existing portfolios for clients seeking to update their image. They consist of 3 outfits, and you can do it in a studio or on location. We want to make the model look different, for side reels and standard shots, with minimum makeup and looking natural, or if you want an eccentric look we can have a makeup artist and stylist on board to make that effect come true. Weddings are a different strategy all together. It’s all about the bride and the groom so you have to make sure that they are happy with the package. We tailor the package to suit the couples’ needs. APL is there from 9am to 7.30pm taking photos. We also have a package where we can do a photo shoot, consisting of a lighting assistant, makeup artist and a second photographer to come down and take photos at a location of the couples’ choice. There are a lot of fashion runways APL covers, so we make sure the photos are crisp and we make sure they stand out for the designer in order to promote their label. We’re there to make sure that their label gets noticed. I want to continue doing event photography in regards to larger events, such as the Logies, AFI awards, and even the Golden Globes or Oscars overseas, which will enable my celebrity portfolio to expand. I’d like to acquire an office in America and Melbourne so then APL can cover more in more locations. Photography is like a time capsule. Every moment is a memory, from fashion to weddings, and here at APL Photography we want to capture those moments. 55

“W

hen I was younger, I wanted to be a singer. And if I wasn’t a musician now, I’d be wanting to be a musician,” says Zoe Badwi, with the Australian musician coveting performing on stage. “I take on a different persona when I’m up [on stage]. The guys call me Zodium – half Zoe, half podium. I’m up there dancing because you can be whoever you want to be,” she says. The singer is set to release her fourth single next month, titled Free Falling which is set to be a big anthem song, accompanying her album due to release later this year. Zoe describes her new release as experiencing the end of something and then starting something new. “Life has all sorts of ups and downs, but with a bit of time, you’ll always be fine,” she explains. The single launch will take Zoe on an intense onemonth world tour, touring around Australia, Asia, London and Mykonos. Zoe made her biggest impact on the music scene in 2008 with her debut solo single, Release Me, with the club anthem holding the number one position on the ARIA club charts for two months.

“Release Me was inspired about not being in places where you don’t want to be. You have to be in a place where you want to be,” she says. So far, her three singles released under Neon Records have all made it to the Top 10 Club Charts, with this hat trick hoping to extend to Free Falling. Her successes led her to an ARIA nomination for Best Dance Song in 2009. “I was up against The Presets and Sneaky Sound System, and just to be in the category with those guys was amazing! Presets won the ARIA – But I was nominated!” According to her mum, Zoe started singing before she started talking, with the singer likely to be spotted screaming and dancing to her own songs in clubs. While performing is second nature to the singer, her fans singing back her lyrics louder than her when she performs still surprises her. So what else can we expect from Zoe Badwi this year? “There are exciting times ahead! There will be lots of different things, a few house elements, maybe a ballad, but always with an edge. I always give my music a bit more attitude.”
