County passes $126.7M budget By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com The county passed a 2013-14 budget at Monday night's monthly Tipton County Legislature meeting, setting the property tax rate at $2.34, unchanged from last year. “I want to thank the finance committee for their hard work,” County Executive Jeff Huffman said. “Every year people come to them with legitimate needs, and some don't get it … The need is always real, but we can't always give it to them.” The $126.7 million budget includes
crime
$78 million ($1.11 of the tax rate) for the schools, by far the most money in any category. A little more than $50 million of that goes to salaries. The rest of the budget breaks down like this: $7.5 million ($.35) for debt service, $6.6 million ($.07) for public works/highways and $16.6 million ($.81) for the general fund. Approximately $18.5 million of the budget is not funded by property tax. Those funds come from the state and federal governments or are borrowed for capital outlay projects. Commissioner Dale Smith thanked budget director W.T. Bailey, who was
hired last year, for his work on the budget. “Last year we were flying by the seat of our pants,” Smith said. “This year was much better. What a difference a year makes.” In other matters: • Huffman announced that Tipton County has been awarded a zeromatch $1 million hazard mitigation grant. The money, Huffman said, will be used to build a building near the Tipton County Public Works facility in Brighton that will store equipment to be used in the event of a natural
disaster. “This all came about after the 2010 flood,” Huffman said. “There's a lot of work still to be done on this.” Although there is no match, the county will have to spend money for the design of the building. He said the budget that just passed does not include money for that. • A committee consisting of commissioners Steve Bringle, Bob Wilson, Tommy Dunavant and Rusty Wooten was appointed to handle the task of putting prices on land the county has acquired over the years because of unpaid property taxes.

Stepfather arrested in newborn murder By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com A Munford man was arrested Thursday for the December 2012 murder of his infant stepson, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced Friday. Bryan Austin DeMeza, 21, of Drummonds Roads, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated child abuse in the death of 19-dayold Zayne Hunter DeMeza. Bryan DeMeza reportedly found the baby unresponsive on Dec. 6, 2012. When DeMeza found he was unresponsive in his bassinet, he took the newborn to his in-laws' house where they called 911. The baby was pronounced dead at 4:07 a.m. That was not the only alleged incident of abuse, however. The report states DeMeza admitted to dropping Zayne on Nov. 23, just six days after his birth, while standing in the kitchen. He reportedly described to investigators the way the baby's body hit his knee and the kitchen cabinet before hitting the floor. Five days later, Zayne's head collided with a door frame while DeMeza was holding him. This incident resulted in a bruise on the baby's forehead. DeMeza reportedly admitted to this as well. Kristin Helm, spokesperson for the TBI, said the autopsy showed Zayne suffered bruising and abrasions in front of his ear as well as on his scalp, the right side of his neck and the back of his lower left neck. The baby suffered from both a brain and See infant, A3

Munford hires new administrator By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Munford has a new city administrator, and he's somebody many people in Munford already know. Peter Colin Sr. accepted the position Monday and will begin Sept. 16. He replaces Neal Hunter, who held the position for 40 years before retiring at the end of last year. Colin's wife, Terry Colin, is a Munford alderman. Mayor Dwayne Cole said Terry Colin “recused herself completely from the (hiring) process at the start.” She will resign her position before her husband begins his new job. “While I understand the need, I regret that Alderman Terry Colin will
resign her position as alderman,” Cole said. “And, it has been my pleasure to serve with her for many years." Peter Colin holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and is a certified professional engineer. He worked in the waste water management field for several years and also at Union Planters Bank as a financial technology manager. Colin also worked in the electronic infrastructure and information technology departments at Vining Sparks, a financial firm with offices all across the country. “He has a strong background in financials, accounting and management,” Cole said. “I believe he will provide exceptional leadership for the future.”
Cole said several candidates were considered. A selection committee consisting of Cole, Hunter and five aldermen – Bob Forbess, Jack Foraker, Johnny Crigger, Sue Arthur and Mike Durham – was assisted by Tennessee's Municipal Technical Assistant Service. “MTAS’s review took into consideration the education, professional experience and qualifications of the applicants,” Cole said. “The top candidates made it through the MTAS review to the final round.” Hunter has been working part time for Munford since his retirement and will continue to serve in an advisory role.” The job's compensation is $52,000 a year.

Cyber-bullying now a zero tolerance offense By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com The school board is proposing cyber-bullying and electronic threats a zero tolerance offense, punishable by an indefinite expulsion. The addition is in accordance with a new state law requiring development of policy regarding harassment, intimidation, bullying or cyber bullying.
According to school board member, Farrel Vincent, cyber bullying is a big issue around the nation, “kids have committed suicide across the country because of this type of bullying. I’m all for having a policy in place.” The amended policy states “any student who transmits by an electronic device any communication containing a credible threat
to cause bodily injury or death to another student or school employee and the transmission of such threat creates actual disruptive activity at the school that requires administrative intervention shall be expelled for a period of not less than one calendar year.” Vincent especially likes the provision that the expulsion is on a case-bycase basis. “I’m doubtful a

The decision stays here in the county.” The second reading will take place on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend.

Covington awarded $53K grant for Frazier Building By ECHO DAY eday@covingtonleader.com Tuesday, the Covington Board of Mayor and Aldermen announced the city received a grant that will help open the doors of the new Boys & Girls Club. The $53,100 grant, awarded by USDA Rural Development, will be used to complete the renovation of the Frazier Building, which is part of the gym from the former Frazier High School. “This is a large grant to get from Rural Development,” said mayor David Gordon. “We’re extremely proud they’ve partnered with us.” Gordon said the money will be used to help with flooring, baseboard mate-
rials, a proper coat of paint on the gym floor and other items. He said volunteers are needed to help with labor. Five years in the making, the Boys & Girls Club of the Hatchie River Region will soon open at the corner of Long Avenue and Alton Street. A fundraising event has also been planned for Thursday, Sept. 19 at Marlo’s Down Under. The event will feature cheesemonger Matt Shankle, internationally-acclaimed pianist Gretchen Lowery and several locals known for giving back to the community. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased at any Patriot Bank location, Marlo’s and at the Covington-Tipton County Chamber of Commerce.
New technology can stop texting while driving Texting While Driving is a habit that could turn deadly. According to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration if you are texting while driving you are twenty three times more likely to become involved in an accident. If you text while you drive you may as well have a Seeing Eye dog or a white cane because, according to the VA. Tech Transportation Institute, texting while driving is the same as being blind for five seconds. Over 800,000 drivers are texting every second across the United States. By doing so, they are reducing their brake reaction speed by as much as 18 percent. If you are in the habit of texting while driving, you might as well have had a couple of brews because according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration texting while driving is the same as consuming four beers. According to the National Safety Council 1.6 million accidents occur every year because
of texting while driving and accounts for almost 25 percent of all vehicle accidents. Every day there are eleven teen deaths in America because of texting while driving. In fact, texting while driving is the number one cause of death among driving teenagers. If you are tempted to start texting while driving, turn off your cell phone before you get in the car. Put your phone in the glove compartment, in a bag, or in your purse. No text message or phone call is worth your life or the lives of others. If you must text or call while you are driving, pull off the road, and stop completely. Break the texting while driving habit by letting your friends and family members know that if your phone goes straight to voice mail it means that you are unavailable. It is vital that you take control over your cell phone. Never let it control your life. You are the only person who can decide if and when you read or send a message on your cell

School board proposes changes to system’s nepotism policy By FRANCE GASQUET fgasquet@covingtonleader.com Members of the Tipton County School Board recently voted to change the nepotism clause policy, which is a result of a state law passed July 1. The policy states members must declare relationships prior to voting on any matter of business that may affect a relative. The goal is to ensure the matter is handled in the best interest of the school system and brings more transparency to the board. "We do our very best to uphold all laws and policies of the Tipton County Board of Education,” said Dr. Buddy
Bibb, superintendent of schools. The relationships cited are between any member of the board, the director of schools, any administrator in the system, a county commissioner, or any appointed or elected county office and a spouse, parent, parent-in-law, child, sonin-law, daughter-in-law, grandparent, grandchild, brother, sister, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, or any person who resides in the same household. The policy states that relationships are to be publicly made known prior to initial employment in the school system and encompasses relatives who work
within direct line of supervision, or become within direct line of supervision by marriage or promotion. If such a case were to exist, then the director of schools shall either: transfer of one of the employees or an alternate evaluation plan shall be devised for one of the employees. The list of known relationships between members of the Tipton County School Board and employees includes, but is not limited to, the following: • Mr. Marty Burlison, District 3, one daughter, teacher • Mr. Grant Shipley, Jr., District 4, mother and wife, principals

Dunavant joins council on animal protection District Attorney General Mike Dunavant has been selected to join the newly formed National Law Enforcement Council of The Humane Society of the United States. The council brings together outstanding current and former law enforcement officers and prosecutors from across the country to assist the organization in its efforts to strengthen and better enforce laws to protect animals from illegal animal cruelty. Members of the national council were chosen for their leadership in protecting animals from neglect, violence and other crimes. With a particular emphasis on animal cruelty, fighting and poaching laws, the council brings together the best in the law enforcement field to help combat animal crimes nationwide. Member activities may include supporting state and federal legislation that strengthens animal protection laws, promoting animal protection training opportunities for local law enforcement, and raising awareness of The HSUS’ animal crimes rewards, tip lines, and other resources. “I am honored to be selected to serve on this important National Law Enforcement Council. Animal victims of abuse cannot speak for themselves, but my office is
taking a stand in seeking justice for abused and neglected animals. I look forward to working with this esteemed group of law enforcement professionals from across the nation to promote public safety by strengthening enforcement and prosecution of animal cruelty and neglect,” said General Dunavant. Earlier this year during its National Justice for Animals Week 2013, the Animal Legal Defense Fund named Dunavant one of America’s Top Ten Animal Defenders. Ann Chynoweth, senior director of the animal cruelty and fighting campaign for The HSUS, said: “We are honored to join forces with General Dunavant to combat animal cruelty, fighting and poaching through the National Law Enforcement Council. By fostering relationships across local, state, and federal levels of law enforcement and prosecution, we can make meaningful improvements to policies and actions that protect animals across the country.” Other members of the HSUS National Law Enforcement Council include former Attorney General of South Carolina, Henry McMaster; former Attorney General of Ohio, Jim Petro; Wayne County Assistant Prosecuting Attor-

Munford handles new hire with class
Peter Colin Sr. is the new city administrator for the city of Munford and we’d like to welcome him and congratulate him on the new position. Most importantly, we want to thank the city and its board of mayor and aldermen for the way in which the hire was handled. Mr. Colin is, you see, the husband of Alderman Terry Colin, but Mrs. Colin and the city took a notable and bold step forward. In addition to recusing herself from the vote to name Mr. Colin to the position, Mrs. Colin announced to the city afterwards that she would be resigning her position on the Board of Aldermen prior to Mr. Colin’s start date. Mayor Dwayne Cole expressed his sadness and gratitude to Mrs. Colin following the decision. “I regret that Alderman Terry Colin will resign her position as Aldermen and, it has been my pleasure to serve with her for many years,” Cole said. The hiring and naming of relatives to jobs is part of small town life. Certainly if given a choice, most of us would want to work with someone we’ve known and worked with in various capacities our entire lives over someone who’s just a name on an application. As Tipton County has grown, more and more government bodies have been working toward separating themselves from charges of nepotism by adopting new policies and taking bold steps forward and this is a good thing. Tipton County is a community of 60,000 residents now and it’s not as small as it used to be. While it still has a small town feel, Tipton County isn’t so small anymore. For its part, the Tipton County Board of Education just took a step in this direction by adopting a new policy regarding disclosure of situations in which family members are being considered for positions. Now comes this news out of Munford, and it’s welcomed, though it’s certainly not “exciting” to lose someone with Mrs. Colin’s experience from the Board of Aldermen. We’d like to applaud the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of the city of Munford for taking this transparent and bold step; applause should also go the Tipton County Board of Education for addressing its policy regarding nepotism as well. We look forward to working with Mr. Colin in the future and thank Mrs. Colin for her service.
E-dating advice, part two As promised, this week we discuss men and their take on online dating …. Today, I’d like to introduce you to Jordan, Tom, Jeff and Simon. Jordan is on a dating site, because in his late 30’s, he’s ready to settle down, and it’s not easy to work and be active in life and meet someone you’re compatible. It doesn’t happen every day. And so he joined the site to widen the pool of people he knows. He is very practical about what he wants: first meet someone, see if there’s chemistry, start going out and eventually have a long term relationship leading towards marriage. Because he’s actively looking, he meets women on a regular basis. He told me that there are three levels of meet and greets: the coffee, which is: I’m just going to meet you to see what you’re like in person, but I’m not really excited about it; 2) the lunch: a little better than a coffee, but still a let’s meet, greet and go; and 3) actual Southern France France Gasquet PLANS. If he makes plans with you, well, then there’s definite interest on his part.” Tom prefers the lunch date, “I found that it was much easier if you didn’t get along because it had a hard stop. You both have to go to work so even if you didn’t like each other it took the pressure off so at least you could be sociable knowing it was only an hour, and everyone feels more at ease at lunch time.’ Jeff suggests, though, being realistic about meeting someone for the first time, especially if you have been compatible on the phone or via

letters to the editor Theory of baptism? Dear editor, Regarding Mr. Kelley’s theories as to baptism, even if we agree (and I do not), what about Mark 16:15,16 “he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved” or I Peter 3:21:” Baptism doth now also save us” and many other verses as well? There are eight accounts of conversion in Acts, all are baptized immediately. Jesus Christ was perfect and he was baptized “to fulfill all righteousness.” If it was important to my Lord and Saviour, it is important to me. Jim Ward Munford Thanking TCSO Dear Editor, On behalf of the commissioners, employees and customers of Poplar Grove Utility District, I would like to thank the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office for the hard work in locating and returning to us our John Deere tractor that was stolen from a construction site on Nolan Road. Detectives and Investigators in the Criminal Investigations Division chased down every lead, sometimes while off duty, until the case was solved. We often take for granted or do not know about the long hours that our law enforcement officers put in to serve and protect us as we go about our daily lives, until we or someone we know is the victim of a crime. This incident has given me a newfound respect and appreciation for the difficult and sometimes dangerous job that law enforcement officers do every day. Thanks again TCSO. David Braden, G.M. lege savings, you’ll be well advised to start saving as early as possible — specifically, during the first few years of your child’s life. Of course, given all your other expenses, you may find it challenging to begin putting away money for college. And with so many years to go until you actually need the money, it’s tempting to put off your savings for another day. But those “other days” can add up — and before you know it, college may be looming. Consequently, you may want to put your savings on “autopilot” by setting up a bank authorization to move money each month into a college savings account. And, as your income rises, you may be able to increase your monthly contributions. Save early, save often: It’s a good strategy for just about any investment goal — and it can make an especially big difference when it comes to paying for the high costs of higher education. DATING
Continued from A4 texting, “realize that there is an adjustment…you don’t see people’s quirks online. You don’t see how they live in the real world. You don’t see their habits.” And then there’s the expectation of a relationship before you have even yet to meet, as explains Jordan, “you have no idea how often someone says she really likes me or whatever, when I haven’t even met her. If I haven’t met you, how could I be dating you?” Tom, a former widower,
tried four dating sites before he struck gold. He suggests first making a decision as to what you want from online dating, “many people might be unsure of their goals. Do they want casual dating? Flings? What exactly? In my case I knew that eventually I wanted to be married again, to give my boys a more stable home life. Knowing what you are after helps you create a profile that targets the kind of people you are looking for, those people looking for

the same end game. For example: you probably don’t want a bunch of partying pictures when you are looking to settle down with your true love. Likewise, if you are really just there for casual dating or meeting new people to hang out with, it might not be wise to discuss in great detail how badly you want a baby.” The profile and pictures are important, because they are what you lead with— you won’t meet anyone if they aren’t interested in your profile or photos. “Your profile is your chance to sell yourself so take a little time and fill it out. If a woman’s profile didn’t even bother to tell me about herself, I usually kept looking,” says Tom. However, Simon offers this sage advice, “remember that no one is really as cool as he or she is in the profile because we all post our most attractive pictures.” He continues, “There’s a reason Ryan Gossling isn’t on a dating site. Don’t expect to find him.” At the same time, try to be as upfront as possible about your body type. Tom explains, “curvy or a little extra are popular descriptions for people on these sites, however, if your curves are actually one big curve, be honest and say so, otherwise you may miss the chance to meet the people who will love you for you.” Once your goals are decided, the profile and photos are uploaded, the men suggest you date as much as possible. “Try going out a lot, selectively of course,” says Tom. “One way I looked at it was that since my social life was limited because of my boys, I got a chance to go out and eat at a restaurant without chicken nuggets or a drive through and enjoy adult conversation, regardless if
it ever went anywhere. Use the dates to feel more comfortable and have fun.” Simon agrees, “It may feel like a desperation move to pay a service to find you a date. The pros? Every other date is fun and the chances are definitely good that you’ll find real chemistry if you’re persistent and tenacious.” And, lastly, but probably most importantly, use common sense. Before you meet someone, make sure he/she is who they say they are. And, meet them in a public place the first couple of times. These days, you can’t be too careful. I’ll leave you with a cautionary tale, Jordan lives in Nashville, and has been on a dating site for a couple of months. An athlete, he participated in the Polar Plunge this past February for charity. Proud of this accomplishment, he used the photos for his online dating profile. Here’s the problem: he’s an unassuming guy who is attractive in real life, and to him, these are just pictures, a glimpse of one day out in the water. Jordan has a couple of other photos, up as well, but truth be told, the polar plunge ones are art work….. so much so, that his pictures were copied and used by someone in New York. Yes, Jordan luckily was contacted by a woman who saw his profile and questioned his existence. He is the other side, the third side of a catfish scheme, it would seem (if you don’t know what this is, google it.) That’s a true story. Jordan is my friend and it happened in the last few days. So be careful out there, but remember Penelope’s wise words from last week… .”sometimes a blind pig can find a truffle.”

The Ruffin's production of “Grease” was so successful the last two weekends the musical's organizers have decided to have one more performance tomorrow at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $6 for students, seniors and military. Courtesy photo Hello everybody! Hope you’re all doing well this wonderful week! We are, as I’m sure you all are, fully enjoying this uncommon like weather. All I can say is ‘may it be.’ I can handle a little tropical weather for a change. I mean who says the Canary Islands have to have all the nice weather, or Costa Rica for that matter? Although I’d go to either one in a heartbeat, ha-ha! We’ve had three good birthdays this past week… mine was wonderful! Teya’s, I hope was good, but she had to work, and Zen, I’m not sure at press time, because hers has not been as of yet, but I’m sure she and her husband Stephen, will have a blast, because she is off! Ms. Jean Bell’s birthday on the 28th, and she is the only one of our residents that has a birthday this month. So happy birthday Ms. Jean, as always, we hope and pray your day is a special one! A great big thank you to Mr. Tim Bentley for coming last week and playing the guitar for the residents.
I’ll bet I can tell you who enjoyed it the most, Mr. Charles Turnage, he does love to sing and loves to play the guitar and listen to someone play it as well. So thank you Tim for making our folks’ day a little brighter! Then we had Cindy Alan and her crew of the Encouragers come and, from what I hear, put on quite a show! Thanks Cindy and the Encouragers, for y’all brightened their day as well. If you would ever be willing to come and do something, we would love to have you come and perform. I would also love to have someone call Bingo during the week. We play at McCalla on Sundays, but it would be great for someone to come on a weekday too. There aren’t as many Bingo players as there used to be since Mr. Kenny left and Ms. Mary doesn’t get out that much anymore. And then there was our dear Ms. Madelyn, oh how she loved to play Bingo! And let’s see, there was Ms. Tavie Gray and Mr. Freddie, before his eyes got so bad, but we

He told them this was not his bus, and the bus driver returned him to school and called his mother, who was not at work that day. We really felt bad for him. He is really a smart child with a fourth grade reading level. At Elm Grove United Methodist Church, the worship schedule has changed so that the offering is at the end of worship. Hey, maybe if everyone likes the sermon they will give more money? Does it work? I hope so. M. D. is cutting the grass today, although I think it is too wet. Last week when he cut the grass, it was too wet and it left little clods all over the yard. It sure did look bad. Love & Prayers.

Hello dear friends, One of our sons, who is 50 years old, has been visiting us this past week. We have enjoyed having him with us. He has three cats that live with him in his RV. And, one of the cats was born blind. There is the mother cat, the blind cat and the third that he found on the street when the kitten was a baby. I remember going to visit him when he lived in Tunica, and the kitten was so little that he crawled under the closed door and came to sleep with us in the bed. Jeff loves his cats. He keeps them fed and watered and makes sure they are in the garage at night. A big black snake visited us in our garage this past week. I was going out the kitchen door into the garage and Mr. black snake was just lying there. It scared me to death, I yelled, "there is a big black snake in the garage!” M. D. and Jeff ran to the garage and killed the snake. I guess he was looking for some of the left out cat food. We have a little greatgrandson, who is in the second grade at Millington

Tipton County and the Civil War-Mississippi By RUSSELL BAILEY County Historian Col. Robert V. Richardson of the Tennessee Partisan Rangers was exonerated of any misconduct by Confederate
authorities. Richardson commanded Mississippi cavalry detachments in his unsuccessful attempt to pursue and capture Gen. Benjamin Grierson’s Federal cavalry raiders. During May 1863,

Richardson operated at Raymond, Port Gibson, Brookhaven and Edwards’ Depot. President Jefferson Davis later nominated Richardson a Brigadier General but the Senate never confirmed it. On May 21, Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, commanding the relief army for Vicksburg, wrote to President Jefferson Davis requesting that Brig. Gen. Cadmus Wilcox be promoted to Major General and sent to his army to command a division of infantry. Johnston termed the former Covington resident as an “indispensable” commander. From May 19 through July 4, the 7th Tennessee Cavalry including men from Tipton County operated along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad in Mississippi. The death of young William T. Haynie of Covington on May 22, 1863, saddened his comrades. Detailed a courier for Brig. Gen. John B. Vil-

lipigue at Fort Pillow and in Mississippi, Haynie was captured and died in a Union prison. His body was brought back and buried in the old Tipton Cemetery a few miles east of Covington. The 7th Tennessee was in Col. Wm. F. Slemmons’ second Brigade, Gen. James R. Chalmers’ Cavalry Division. Slemmons’ Brigade included the second Arkansas and Lt. Col. W. W. Faulkner’s Kentucky Partisan Rangers. On June 15, Gen. Chalmers led 400 picked cavalrymen and three cannon of the Quitman Light Artillery from Senatobia to the Mississippi River at Dales’ Point. His cavalry consisted of four companies of the 7th Tennessee, four of the second Arkansas and two of Faulkner’s Kentuckians. At Dale’s Point 4 miles above Commerce on June 17, his command fired on Union transports’ Alice Dean, Commercial and Rocket. Reports indicated that one of the boats
sank while one was abandoned and burned. On the 19th, Chalmers’ cavalry attacked Union Major John Henry’s command of Illinois, Missouri and Ohio troopers, 320 men at Dr. Atkins’ Plantation 3 miles north of Coldwater and 4 miles southwest of Hernando. The 7th Tennessee led in the attack with Tipton’s men from Company I charging in gallant style. (Co. K. of the 7th Tennessee had disbanded and most of the men transferred to Co. I and a few to other companies). A soldier of the 7th Tennessee later wrote: “The Seventh Regiment was drawn up on a hill and the enemy on another opposite, with a ravine or depression between. Firing rapidly, the regiment, under Col. (J. G.) Stocks, charged, mounted, down this hill and up the next, the immediate enemy—namely the first Missouri-giving away and scampering to the rear in hot haste. The enemy’s force, be-
ing assailed on all sides by Chalmers, was almost annihilated…” The Confederates pursued the Yankees some 15 miles capturing 88 prisoners. An additional 30 men were killed or wounded, according to estimates. Chalmers reported one man killed and 10 wounded. Among the wounded was Lieut. R. J. Black of Tipton’s Company B, shot through the thigh in the charge down the hill. On the 19th, he ordered Col. J. G. Stocks with the command back to the river to fire on enemy transports. Company B., commanded by Capt. J. P. Russell, remained as escort to Gen. Wm. W. Loring and “moved about Canton, Jackson, Yazoo City, Vicksburg and Meridan, Mississippi” for about a year. Earlier that year, Thomas Archer died of sickness at home near Garland.

GreetingsIt was all good! Even better than that. Our second annual usher’s day program on Aug. 11 was a great success, thanks in part to my former church, Bright Hill M. B. Church Jamestown. Their associate pastor, my sister, Rev. Pearl Andrews, brought the message, “Usher me in” Ps. 84:10. Our pastor Rev. Steven Miller, formerly of Jamestown, was happy to see a lot of our family, it was like a mini reunion of North Star Community Church and Bright Hill together again. It was cloudy Tuesday morning, and I slept late, until 9 a.m. The air went out Friday and since the parts won't be here until Thursday, we are living with fans and ceiling fans. It is supposed to be a lot cooler Wednesday and Thursday, so we will make it! At least it's not near 100 degrees like the summer we had a few years ago. Everyone on Facebook has offered places to stay, fans and even a window unit; I have great friends! This week's cat report: Minnie had her surgery and was declawed. She crept around for the first few days and hid under beds and on one of the lower computer desk’s shelves. She finally emerged and we've been picking her up, putting her on the couch. Yesterday she started jumping on the couch, so we let her. Figure when she feels like it, it's okay. It’s darkly funny, though, when she tries to claw her way up on the couch - she's like "what?" This week's farm report: (this one's for you, Otis!) we received 3/10 of an inch of rain Sunday, and again last night, which included a big windstorm. Beans are blooming all along the long limbs, and they have been sprayed for fungus. The corn is starting to turn brown, the ears are hanging
down and will be on the last leg before long! We started shelling corn Aug. 26 last year, but it will be later this year. It looks like it will be later for everything, with all the rain we've been blessed with. I drove through the storm last night to Courtney Gurley's home for a "Revealing" Party for her brother and his wife, Justin and Amanda Gurley. About 40 folks gathered for grilled chicken, baked beans, slaw and mac and cheese. The cupcakes were iced with pink or blue icing and we picked pink or blue cups to drink from depending on what we thought the baby will be. It's a boy and I chose a pink cup! Congratulations to the happy couple – the baby is due on Christmas Eve! I had a very enjoyable luncheon with Norma Beasley and Shirley Harrington, Covington girls, and Vicki Baker and Linda Lowrance, Dyersburg girls, last Wednesday when former employees of South Central Bell reunited! We plan to do it again this fall and maybe more can come. It had been 31 years since we'd been together! Danielle Schlauch and I drove to Jackson last Thursday for a Soil Conversion Summer Meeting. We stopped by and visited with my dad, Kenneth Weir, afterwards. He was doing well, knew me and gave me a hug. Always makes for a good visit! On our prayer list is John Henderson, who is having
complications after surgery, Judy Randolph, who made a trip back to the hospital Saturday night and returned home, Bonnie Holbrook, who had eye surgery, Kristin Raley, knee surgery, and Shirley Cook, Genie Renfroe, Jenni Langston, Sam Stitt, Walter McIntosh, Kerry Overton, Heath Overton, Doug Jones, Wayne Lovett, and so many more, along with all our servicemen and women. There will be a baby shower for Lauren and Logan Wall's baby boy on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. The birthday party at Covington Manor will be at 2 p.m. on the 17th and the devotional at Covington Care will be on the 18th at 4 p.m. Happy birthday to Jan Kinningham and Amanda Fletcher on Aug. 14, Heather Keith on the 13th, Ethan Stewart on the 16th and Tim Gatlin on the 17th! Happy anniversary to Casey and Amanda Fletcher on Aug. 14 and Alex and Alliston Cates on the 15th! This week's Farmer's Almanac quote: "Every ear of corn has an even number of rows, unless the plant was stressed." I see God's hand in that. "Thanks for reading" this week goes to Norma Beasley, Pat Gatlin and Brooksie Gurley! Sa-lute! We are headed for the "ber" months - September, October, November, December, which are my favorite months! Until next week.

A first look
Schools host jamborees Friday By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com Tipton County high school football fans looking to catch some preseason football action this weekend will have three choices with Covington, Brighton and Tipton-Rosemark Academy each hosting jamborees tomorrow. Covington will host Munford, Haywood and First Assembly Christian School. The action begins at 6:30 p.m. with Munford taking on Haywood. Covington plays FACS in the second game. Charger head coach Marty Wheeler said he's looking forward to assessing his team before the season starts a week from tomorrow. “It's an opportunity for some guys who don't have a lot of experience to get out on the field under the lights,”
Wheeler said. “It's a trial run for us to get an idea of what guys can play in different spots and get a closer look at our offense and our defense as well as special teams.” Brighton will host St. Benedict in a two-quarter jamboree that starts at 7 p.m. Tipton-Rosemark will host North Point (formerly Southern Baptist Educational Center), Rossville and Lausanne. The action begins at 7 p.m. with TRA taking on North Point. Rossville will play North Point after that, followed by Lausanne vs. Rossville and TRA vs. Lausanne. All four local teams begin the regular season Aug. 23. Munford hosts Covington, Brighton hosts Carver and TRA travels to Tupelo Christian Prep.

What happens in Vegas
By RICK HUFFMAN Gilt Edge Church of Christ A few years ago, a young man was telling a group of his coworkers about his recent vacation. He had gone to a nude beach in Mexico with his wife. As most on the beach were unclad or mostly unclad, he donned his Speedo and his wife walked the beach sans top. (Why would you want to go to such a place? Ex 23:2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil…). As luck would have it, who should they see walking toward them on the beach but his father’s friend and his wife. This couple was not as “liberated” as the young man and his wife and was dressed somewhat more modestly. The young couple was embarrassed and scrambled to cover themselves with beach towels before the other couple met them and hopefully before they recognized them. The young couple was ashamed at the prospects of seeing someone they knew who might tell their families and others back home what they saw. What the young couple failed to realize is that they are always visible before the all seeing eye of the Lord. Heb 4:13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do. Remember Adam and Eve. After they sinned they realized they were naked. They made a feeble
attempt of clothing themselves with fig leaves (Gen. 3:7) and then “hid” from God. How naïve to think they could hide from God! People take great pains to hide their sins from other people- family, friends, coworkers, church members-yet do not consider that their lives and deeds are an open book before God. Ec 12:14 For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. It amazes me that people throw their religion out the window when they go on vacation. We see who or what is really lord of our lives when it comes to vacation. Our congregation always has its gospel meeting beginning the third Sunday in July and its VBS starting the first Monday in June. We have families who will schedule vacations every year for one of these weeks or the other if not both and then say they did not know there was a conflict. People, when they go on vacation, think they can take a vacation from God. They do not plan ahead to find a church where they can worship while away. They do not schedule events so that they do not interfere with their service to God. They do not pray like they did at home. They do not read their Bibles like they did at home. They dress or undress in ways they would not dare to at home. They go places they would not dare to go at home such as bars and honky tonks or worse. They use language they would

not use back home. They drink, party and carouse like they would not dare do if at home. On a recent episode of "The Tonight Show," Leno quipped, “It is not cheating if it is in Vegas.” It’s like there is another standard (or no standard of conduct) if we are on vacation. Vacationers do not make up the contribution they missed but spend it on vacation. The phrase has been coined, “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” as if to imply that we are not responsible or accountable for what we do if we are on vacation. Is God’s will (rules) not the same everywhere? Does where we are determine if something is right or wrong? Is there a different set of standards in Vegas (or wherever we vacation)? Can we follow the maxim, “when in Rome, do as the Romans do” in our moral and spiritual behavior? What if God (or His Son) took a vacation? What if He did not make the sun to shine? What if He did not make the world keep turning? Col. 1:17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. (RSV) Thankfully, we do not have to worry. We can depend on God and His Son. Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. The question is: “Can God depend on us?” God never takes a vacation from His responsibilities to us nor to His creation; can we take a vacation from God and our duty to Him?

Plenty of talent is back for 2013 Lady Cards soccer squad By JEFF IRELAND jireland@covingtonleader.com The Brighton Lady Cardinals soccer team lost four key seniors to graduation. But considering the returning players scored a combined 76 goals last season, third-year head coach Shari Garrett is optimistic about the 2013 season. “Coach Bubba (Chambers) and I are excited about the upcoming season,” Garrett said. “We are looking at a great group of girls who are determined to succeed.” Senior Courtney Carpenter, who scored 22 goals last year and added nine assists, leads

that group. Shady Ross and Mo Whitefoot, two more seniors, are also back after productive 2012 seasons. Ross, a forward, had 10 goals and two assists and Whitefoot, a center midfielder, tallied 14 goals and 12 assists. The defense brings back experience as well. Senior keeper Gaby Ripley returns, as do senior defenders Emily Kirk (two goals last season) and Codie Davis. Heading up the junior class are Montana Allred, Kasie Jacome, Holly Maddox, Haley Ralls,
Aleah Williams and Kailee Zimmerman. Sophomores looking to make their mark this season include Avery Denton and Brandi Holland. Brighton finished 12-4 last season, finished second in the district and advanced to the region tournament. “Coach Bubba and I agree we need to improve on working together as a team,” Garrett said. “We also need new players to be physically and mentally ready to step onto the field at any time in case of injury.”
