THE PATSY GARLOW COLLECTION OF WILLIAM F. CODY FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHS

Matt Chapman matt@cowans.com

The Patsy Garlow Collection of William F. Cody Family Photographs, Plus Additions Lots 1 - 213 Provenance The majority of items in this sale descended directly in the family of Irma Louise Cody Garlow, Buffalo Bill’s last surviving child. William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846-1917) and his wife Louisa Frederici Cody (1843-1921), had four children, but only daughters Arta (18661904) and Irma (1883-1918) survived into adulthood. Irma married Frederick Harrison Garlow, Sr.(1880-1918) in 1908, and had three children, Frederick Harrison Garlow, Jr. (1911-1985), William Joseph Garlow (changed to Cody) (1913-1992), and Jane Cody Garlow Hallehan-Keane (1909-1987). When their parents died just three days apart in the influenza pandemic of 1918, the three young children were cared for by their grandmother, Louisa. Fred Garlow, Jr., married Margaret Sutherland and they had two children, Patricia Ann (b. 1948) and Mark Frederick (b. 1952). The items offered here are those of Patricia Ann (“Patsy”) Garlow, Buffalo Bill’s direct great-granddaughter. They have remained the property of Cody-Garlow family, with most items spending much of the latter half of the 20th century on loan to the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Most items bear a BBHC index number on verso.

William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody William Frederick Cody was born in Scott County, Iowa, on February 26, 1846, the fourth of seven children born to Isaac Cody and Mary Ann Bosnell Laycock Cody. He grew up in the frontier towns and farms of the West, learning to ride, shoot, track, etc. When his older brother, Samuel, died as a result of an accidental fall from a horse, young Will was left “second in command” of the family. In 1854, his father Isaac learned that Kansas was to be opened for settlement, and he joined his brother Elijah in Weston, Missouri, to survey lands that would soon be available. Will accompanied this “scouting” expedition, and at one of their first stops, Ft. Leavenworth, saw a full-dress dragoon parade, which impressed him, and was likely an inspiration for some of the events in his later Wild West shows . He was further influenced by the “Bleeding Kansas” era, the half-decade of violence that many see as the real beginning of the Civil War. It certainly would have had an impact on the young Cody, particularly since father Isaac, committed to the anti-slavery side of the conflict, lost his life in the ensuing violence in 1857, leaving 11-year-old Will as the principal breadwinner for half a dozen people. Cody took on several odd jobs; he worked as a hunter and trapper supplying the wagon trains, drove a stagecoach, prospected in the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1859, and rode for the famous yet short-lived Pony Express in 1860. When the Civil War erupted on a scale larger than Kansas, he tried to enlist, but his mother insisted he was too young , so he continued working supply trains, to at least help get food and materiel to the troops. Then, at 17, he enlisted in the 7th Kansas Cavalry, serving 18 months across Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, and Tennessee, in the armies of Sheridan, Rosecrans, and Grant, among others. After being discharged, he married Louisa Frederici (1844-1921), with whom he would have four children. By 1867-1868, Cody went back to hunting, this time to feed the railroad construction crews. He became especially adept at hunting buffalo, reportedly killing over 4,200 in 18 months, for which he earned his nickname “Buffalo Bill.” According to legend, he and William Comstock, also a buffalo hunter, were both known by that name, so they decided to have a competition – who could shoot the most buffalo in 8 hours? Cody won, with 68 buffaloes to Comstock’s 48, thus securing the sobriquet for himself. Or so it has been reported. Cody, ever the showman and promoter, had a habit of embellishing— some would say fabricating—events. Beyond dispute, however, was his service as a civilian scout for the U.S. 3rd Cavalry in 1869-1872, for which he was awarded the Medal of Honor for the rescue of a white woman held captive by Cheyenne warriors. Cody’s exceptional skill and capability on the range, combined with his magnetic personality

and leadership qualities, allowed the legend of “Buffalo Bill” to grow to the point that General Sheridan personally recommended Cody as the lead scout for Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia’s royal hunting party. Around this time, the character “Buffalo Bill” began starring in “dime novels,” adventure stories with the target audience being young boys. Ned Buntline, the premier author and publisher of such tales, decided to branch out into stage productions, and in 1872 hired Cody and friend Texas Jack Omohundro to appear in “The Scouts of the Prairie” in Chicago. A couple years later, they added Wild Bill Hickok to the troupe, and the show toured in various forms for nearly a decade. The circus-like Wild West shows as we think of them today were begun in 1883, when Cody founded Buffalo Bill’s Wild West in North Platte, Nebraska, along the line UPRR, which allowed him to transport his massive production across the country with relative ease. He employed dozens of Oglala Lakota warriors from the nearby Pine Ridge Reservation to reenact Western action scenes, and made stars of other performers such as sharpshooter Annie Oakley. The show later expanded to include the “Congress of Rough Riders of the World,” featuring other cultures with a mounted tradition—American Indians, Turks, Gauchos, Arabs, Cossacks, and more—the more colorful and exotic, the better. Cody is sometimes criticized because some of these, particularly the American Indians, were always “bad guys.” But the other side of that is Cody employed native peoples and, in the case of Indians, he also had the women and children set up their camp, as they would if they were engaged in traditional pursuits. The public was allowed to watch to emphasize that these were people with families just like themselves. He also supported the rights of women, paying Annie Oakley and his cowgirls the same as the men. Later in life he became a conservationist, pushing for some restrictions on hunting even though he ran big game trips. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West toured North America and Europe for more than three decades, performing two shows per day up to 200 days per year. Near the end of the century, Cody founded his eponymous town in northwest Wyoming, not far from Yellowstone, and moved his home and operations there, partly because rail lines were reaching more of the West, making transportation for this enormous operation easier, but America was also “civilizing” much of its formerly wild territory. Indians had been relegated to the reservations, buffalo herds were nearly extinct, land was fenced (and barbed wire had been invented), and the plains were irrigated for farming. The shows began to serve as not just entertainment but as a window into the past, and even a history lesson (if imperfect) for many on the East Coast and in Europe. Mark Twain, who Cody considered a friend, praised the shows overseas tours as the only “purely and distinctively American” export. By the end of the first decade of the 20th century, Buffalo Bill Cody was contemplating retiring in the still relatively wild corner of Wyoming, although he also purchased grazing land and built up a dude ranch, hotels, ran camping expeditions and big game hunting. His show merged with “Pawnee Bill’s” Far East show, and they spent a few years on a combined “farewell tour.” But the productions were so enormous they were always in financial trouble. Eventually he agreed to an especially bad contract and the show finally declared bankruptcy in 1913, though much of the act continued as part of the Sells-Floto Circus in 1914 and 1915, and in its final season as part of the Miller Bros. 101 Ranch Tour. Cody died January 10, 1917, while visiting his sister in Denver. He is buried on Lookout Mountain in Golden, Colorado, although he wanted to be buried at his ranch in Cody, and here have been sporadic fights over the years to move his remains back to Wyoming. His legacy is twofold: as the embodiment of the spirit of the Wild West, and as one of the first true international superstar entertainers.

1 Cody Family CDV Album, 1860s Approx. 6 x 9 in. album, full leather covers with raised designs and gilt lettering,. Contains 65 CDVs and six tintypes ( four sixth plate, one ninth plate, one gem-sized). A penciled index accompanies the portraits, but they do not seem to be in that order. Many are identified and dated on verso or the album page and most bear backmarks of studios in San Francisco and several other California towns, including the Gold Rush settlements of Coulterville, Sonora, Columbia, and Virginia City, Nevada, as well as a few from New York, and Connecticut. Dated 1861 to 1877; a few with revenue stamps on verso. Paper taped to FFEP reads Mary Collins Cody / N.L.A. Cody’s first wife. Nelson Lowell Adams Cody (1848-1927) was born in Lake County, IL to Nelson Towers Cody (1820-1896) and Susan B. Adams. His wives are listed as Mary Frances Collins, Anna Marie Nelson and Olive Lewis St. John. Some sources identify Nelson L. as the grandson of Isaac Cody, who is William Frederick Cody’s father. However, that would mean that Nelson T. is Isaac’s son, and most sources list his offspring as: Martha, Samuel, Julia, William, Eliza, Helen and May. No Nelson. Other sources indicate that the common ancestor is Philip (17291808), who with Abigail Emerson had Philip, Jr. (1770-1850), Joseph and John (John had a son Nathan, Joseph appears to have only had a daughter). Philip’s (1770-1850) sons are listed as Isaac, Elias, Elijah, Joseph and Philip. Perhaps the Cody Family Association can clarify the relationship, but the album, along with many others, ended up in the hands of a Buffalo Bill descendant, so we assume there is a connection. Nelson Towers Cody and Martha A. Cody are listed in the 1850 census in Waukegan, Lake Co., IL. He was 30, she, 22, and Nelson L. was 3 years of age. Shortly thereafter, Nelson T. headed for California,

at first joining the miners in Hangtown and Gilroy, then opening a general store in Horseshoe Bend to supply the miners. He gained the confidence of the miners, and they deposited their gold in his store safe. He moved several times, eventually adding dentistry and pharmaceuticals to his business (going to Stent, then known as Poverty Hill, then to Chinese Camp, Big Oak Flat, Coulterville, Seattle, WA, and finally back to Ventura, CA). He seems to have remained in the drug business for the remainder of his life, a profession taken up by his son, Nelson Lowell. Nelson L.A. Cody grew up in the mining camps, then went to San Francisco to work in a wholesale stationery business, and later worked as a stenographer and clerk. After several more moves, he returned to San Francisco and sold subscriptions to periodicals and books, including Mark Twain’s books. After his marriage to Mary Collins, his father split his stock with his son, and Nelson L. entered the drug business in Snelling, Merced Co. and added postmaster to his duties. After his wife died, he married Olive St. John, and moved to Oakland and later Vallejo. He met General Grant in San Francisco in 1879, and in 1884 went East on an extended visit, going to Europe in 1889, where he spent a year touring the major cities. He returned to California, locating in Merced, again engaged in the drug business. He gave up the store in 1920 for a ranch of just under 400 acres, but it was burned out just 4 years later. Nelson married Anna Marie Nelson in 1899. She and a couple of other ladies of Merced started a lending library on the second floor of “Cody’s Corner Drug Store.” When it was “too successful” the 600 volumes were donated to Merced as the nucleus of a free library. Nelson Cody died in 1927, leaving his wife, Anna. $1,000 - $1,500

2 Cody Family Cabinet Card and CDV Album, Including Wm. F. Cody Cabinet Card Approx. 8.5 x 10.5 in., embossed leather album with gilt lettering and highlights, single clasp (missing), containing 55 cdvs, three tintypes (all mounted on cdv-sized cards) and seven cabinet cards, including the portrait of William F. Cody. At one time, these photographs were labeled in pencil on the pages, but many are now empty. Two tintypes mounted on cdv-sized cards are labeled E.C. Bradford and Arta Cody, and many are of the Crook and Bradford families. Additional labels reference the Holister Family and the Lydon (or Tydon?) Family, but individuals are not identified. Dr. J.J. Crook, one of the individuals who is identified (along with his wife, son, and daughter), was the owner of the hotel in Salt Creek

Valley which Buffalo Bill’s mother worked at after the death of Isaac Cody when William was only 11. Crook’s son, Dr. W.W. Crook, appears in the album as well, and was the doctor who Buffalo Bill visited at Glenwood Springs, Colorado, just days before his death (see Lots 61 and 62; interestingly, Dr. W.W. Crook appears in this, one of the oldest items in this sale, and in the last known photographs of Buffalo Bill. Bill’s sister, May, married a man named Ed Bradford. The section in the album labeled Bradford Family, lists Ed, May, Will, Nellie in the corner, however there is no photograph. Nevertheless this grouping is clearly linked to William F. Cody’s sister. Other members of the Bradford family include Sam and Frank, presumably Ed’s brothers, but an ancestry search did not locate them. $1,500 - $2,000

5 Two Albums of William F. Cody at Leisure, Compiled and Presented by Illustrator R. Farrington Elwell Lot of 2 albums made for William F. Cody by Robert Farrington Elwell (1874-1962) a self taught artist who covered Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in the 1890s and became Mr. Cody’s ranch manager in Wyoming. Elwell’s Western illustrations appeared in Harper’s, Century and American. Both albums are artfully compiled, with inked captions for each photograph and small ink accent illustrations and designs scattered throughout. One album is constructed of 6 heavy card stock mounts, 9 x 13 in., bound with 2 metal rings, with illustrated covers and containing 45 photographs. The other is 13 heavy card stock mounts, 9.75 x 12.5 in., with no cover and no binding, containing 113 photographs. The bound album features a buffalo illustration on the front cover and the initials R.F.E. and M.F.E. and 1901 on the back cover. All photographs show the TE Ranch, Carter Ranch, and surrounding scenery, plus a few views of the battlefield at Little Bighorn, though none show Cody himself. Every photograph is captioned and has gold stars affixed at the corners, and each page includes small ink illustrations of Western wildlife, campsites, tepees, saddles, and the like.

The unbound pages are similarly arranged, but without the stars and accent illustrations. They show at least 15 candid photographs of William F. Cody at the T.E. Ranch, Pahaska Tepee, and on a hunting and camping trip in the surrounding wilderness in November 1904. The other men on the trip are Iron Tail, of whom several fine candid shots are included, Elwell, a man called “Black Fox,” and unidentified others. Two notable shots of lron Tail show him in full headdress and regalia, seated on a blanket playing a game of cards with an unidentified man in wooly chaps (titled A game for ponies and A critical moment). Four more shots show Cody relaxing inside his den at the TE (with titles such as Here one finds a homelike atmosphere never to be erased from memory and Where the strife of the outer world is excluded). Two views show Cody directing two men working three-horse plows (Plowing an oatfield a mile in circumference), and two show him cracking a whip in the corral (Trying out an old companion and Crack after crack like the bark of a Winchester, with a close-up of the whip titled Could this whip but tell tales). Locations mentioned in the captions include Elk Fork, North Fork of Shoshone, Sweetwater, Whit Creek, Camp St. Lawrence, and the Coal Mine. All in all, an exceptional and unique album capturing Cody and friends out of the spotlight. $6,000 - $8,000

and the Chippewa. They were life long enemies. They meet today, after centuries of warfare, to make an everlasting peace. This is the first meeting of the Ogallalla Sioux and Brule Sioux with their ancient enemies the great Chippewa tribe, since they met together in hostile array. I want to thank Captain Mercer for making this meeting possible. This council will live in history. It is one of the historical meetings that will find a place in the annals of our country. It is an epoch in American history. I am proud that it has taken place in the Wild West show, on the historic and ancient battle grounds of these two great tribes on the shores of Lake Superior. If any Chippewas remain in Ashland tonight, I will be pleased to extend to them every courtesy, and will give orders that they shall be admitted free. I now take pleasure in presenting to the head chief of the Chippewas, this pipe, and pouch embroidered with beads filled with kinikinick, such as the Sioux smoke in their peace pipes. with horses. A final RPPC provides a distant view of the employees taking a break to eat. Always short on funds, in 1913 Cody accepted a loan from Denver businessman Harry Tammen under somewhat questionable circumstances. Apparently he did not realize that the loan made him an employee (featured act) of the Sells-Floto Circus. When he fell behind on payments, Tammen seized the show and a glorious career came to an end. By some accounts, Cody was attempting to organize a new show while at his sister’s house in Colorado in 1917, but he died there before realizing his ambition. Many have suggested that he died of a broken heart after losing his beloved Wild West show. $400 - $600

133 Rochester Evening Express, July 27, 1876, with Headline, Buffalo Bill’s Trophies, Describing Cody’s Trophies Captured in the Indian Battle at Warbonnet Creek The Rochester Evening Express, Volume XVII (28), No. 177, July 27, 1876. Large paper, 22.5 x 26.5 in. (9 columns), 4pp. On the second page, fourth column, there is an approx. half-column account of “Buffalo Bill’s Trophies,” with the subtitle, “Yellow Hand’s [sic - more often translated as “Hair”] Scalp, War Bonnet, Shield, Pistol, Knife, Bridle and Blanket in Rochester, and on Exhibition at the Pickwick Cigar Store.” The article recounts part of their description of the Battle of Warbonnet Creek the precious week (the fight occurred July 17), between troopers of the fifth Cavalry under Colonel Wesley Merritt, who planned an ambush of Cheyenne warriors who, following Morning Star’s example, were leaving the Spotted Tail and Red Cloud agencies in Nebraska to join Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. The natives had been encouraged by the success of the Sioux, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors at Little Big Horn River just three weeks earlier (June 25-26). William Cody acted as Merritt’s guide to intercept the Cheyenne attempting to reach the other warriors. In the “battle,” really more of a “duel” between Heova’ehe (Yellow Hair) and Buffalo Bill, Yellow Hair was shot and scalped, the only casualty of a short fight (although an unknown number were wounded), in which, for a change, no soldiers were killed. This episode also sealed Buffalo Bill’s reputation, which had been growing for years. Property of another consignor. $150 - $250

145 Big Horn Expedition, August 15 to September 30, 1874, Commanded by Capt. Anson Mills, U.S. Third Cavalry Mills, Anson, Capt. 3rd Cavalry. Big Horn Expedition August 15 to September 30, 1874. No publishing information. Map of expedition 13.25 x 16.5 in., drawn by C. Page, Co. M, 3rd. Cav. 8vo, printed paper wraps, 15pp. Along with 343 men and 15 officers, Mills took two civilian guides, William Cody and Tom Sun, plus six scouts and various packers and teamsters (50 total). The expedition went out to round up Indians found off their reservations. Although Mills refers to “murders and stealings around Steele, Rawlins and Seminole” and their determination that they were perpetrated by villages on the North Fork of the Powder River, but specific “murders and stealings” are not enumerated. An article in the Sacramento Daily Union of 22 August 1874 (vol. 47, No. 7296) also notes this expedition, although in somewhat different terms. After a reference to the Black Hills Expedition led by Custer which discovered gold, “Now we are told that the real fighting expedition, ‘under command of Colonel Anson Mills, is encamped near Rawlins, in Wyoming Territory,’ close to the railway, and that it will soon be ready to start for the country of the hostile redskins. ...The instructions are to thoroughly scour the valleys of the Sweetwater, Powder and the Big Horn rivers, and the country to the southern extremity of Yellowstone lake, and to administer the severest punishment to all Indians found off their reservation.’ And it is added to this, that ‘much good is expected of the expedition...’ At the very low estimate the cost of these pretended hunts after hostile Indians this year will foot up not less than $1,500,000 or $2,000.000; of which the cormorants who follow after the troops, the plunderers who let the contracts and those who take them, will share about three-fourths, half of it clear stealings. If any good thing either for the Indians or the whites most interested (the settlers) could be effected by it, much of the objection to this wasteful policy would be overcome. But that is not one of the results, nor intended to be. The fact is that the substratum of our Indian policy is now, as it always has been, a composite of brutality, fraud, and hypocrisy.” They go on to compare Canadian management of native peoples with American management. Interesting, especially for 1874. William “Buffalo Bill” Cody was one of the civilian scouts on this expedition. It is interesting that he had already acquired his nickname, mentioned by Mills, reportedly from his prowess with hunting the bison to feed railroad construction crews. He claims to have shot 4,280 animals in less than 18 months. By some versions, he “won” the right to use it in an 8-hour competition with William Comstock, shooting

68 bison to Comstock’s 48. Yet Cody was just 28 years old at this point. He was already on his life’s path, since Ned Buntline has begun producing his “Scouts of the Prairie” stage shows in 1872, and before that publishing “dime novels” starring Buffalo Bill. On this particular journey in the Black Hills, the expedition encountered California Joe, given name unknown, an old-time trapper and mountain man, who also helped with scouting since he knew the territory intimately. His encounter with Joe is a story told by Cody many times (which makes one suspicious that it is a bit “embellished”). It is interesting that Mills makes no mention of this encounter. This seems to have been one of the last field expeditions made by Cody. After this, it was all “show biz.” Early in the expedition, the crew got pinned down by an early snow storm. Whether this storm, or some other event (such as scouts alerting the villages to the presence of the army), the Indians appear to have left the hills. Most campsites that they encountered had been abandoned weeks before, many about the time of the storm. So rather than the planned three months in the field, the expedition appears to have been cut in half, since there was no one to “round up.” $800 - $1,000

152 Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show 16 Film Reel Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show: A Grand Review. 16mm reel, diameter 10.5 in. (roughly 800 feet), in a Chicago Film Laboratory, Inc., case. We have not viewed this film, but have unwound to the title card, which reads Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show / A Grand Review, referring to parade of riders which opened each show, and we would suspect most or all of the standard 20 or so scenes segments of a normal show would be included. Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show performers were first recorded on kinetograph by Thomas Edison in 1894, notably a shooting demonstration by Annie Oakley. Edison and Cody had earlier partnered on a massive electrical lighting system for a stand in Paris, and Edison chose the show as one the first subjects to be recorded. It is unclear if this 16mm reel is a transfer of the Edison footage or a later shoot. $1,000 - $1,500

The young, well-dressed boy wearing ringlet curls and holding a toy gun is Kit Carson Cody, as identified on verso, the only son of Buffalo Bill Cody who was struck by scarlet fever at 5 and half years old and passed away on April 21, 1876. Kit Carson Cody occasionally appeared in his father’s Wild West shows. While performing in a play in Massachusetts in April of 1876, Cody received a telegram from his wife, Louisa, indicating that their boy was near death from scarlet fever. He immediately caught the overnight train to the family’s home in Rochester, NY, where, within hours later, Cody’s son died in his arms. In a letter Cody wrote to his sister, Julia Cody Goodman, following the death of “Kitty,” as he affectionately called his son, he stated: “He was too good for this world. We loved him too dearly he could not stay. And now his place is vacant and can never be filled, for he has gone to be a beautiful Angel in that better world, where he will wait for us.” (Information obtained from Buffalo Bill Historical Center, December 11, 2013.) $600 - $800

Watson, and at its maximum contained 8000 acres. It became known as the “1733 Ranch” because it was 1,733 miles from both Boston and San Francisco. It became a kind of experimental station, introducing new species, one of which was alfalfa. The crop was introduced in 1890, in part to establish its value as feed as well as the feasibility of growing it in Nebraska, which had just experienced a drought. According to hayinart.org, this ranch may also have been a site to experiment with/demonstrate new machinery (harvesters, stackers, etc.). $1,200 - $1,800

180 William F. Cody Posed with a Stagecoach Full of Friends, North Platte, Nebraska 6.5 x 8.5 in. silver gelatin print, mounted to 10 x 12 in. Cody is at the reins, Maj. Burke(?) next to him, and at least a dozen other people piled on the coach. An article in the Nebraska State Journal for November 12, 1893 may shed some light on this. The article describes the return of the home town “hero” from the Columbian Expo in Chicago. “North Platte people are proud of Buffalo Bill,...and proud of the fact that Bill loves his home town and spends a great deal of his money here. His neighbors and friends delight to do him honor when he makes his appearance among them, and therefore when it became known that Cody would reach home Thursday night of this week preparations were at once made for a banquet at Lloyd’s opera house Friday night, where he could be warmly welcomed by his many friends. There is no other place in the city large enough to accommodate Cody’s North Platte friends....” The article goes on to describe Cody at the banquet, and his plans for developing his ranch in North Platte. The last bit is interesting: “The large two story tallyho coach Bill brought from Chicago with him attracted more attention on the streets today than would a herd of buffalo or a band of Sioux Indians. All citizens will now be treated to a tallyho ride, for Bill is always free with his favors and never stingy with anything.” (http://www. nebraskahistory.org/publish/publicat/timeline/buffalo-bill-north-platte.htm accessed 13 Dec. 2013) This may well be one of those groups of citizens being treated to a tallyho ride! $600 - $800

Both labels on verso indicate that they are from Buffalo Bill Cody’s Carter Ranch, Sheep Mt. in background. Two 3.5 x 5.5 in. images on 5.25 x 6.375 in. mounts. Each with manuscript label on front. One with “Col. Cody & Foreman at horse pasture / Carter Ranch / Big Horn Co. / Wyo.” and “Col. Cody in horse pasture / Carter Ranch / Big Horn County / Wyo.” Unlabeled 5 x 7 in. shot of cattle and cowboys in background. $1,000 - $1,500

188 Candid Photographs of William F. Cody and Family and Friends Relaxing at the Bobcat Ranch Lot of 7. All 3.25 in. square on 5 in. square mounts. At least six appear to have been taken at the same “event.” The images show various combinations of William Cody and three friends - a couple show all four men, three more captured three of the four, and one is a conversation between Bill and one other. The seventh image appears

to be from a different time. Two other men are present (and at least one appears to be the same as one in the other series), but also in the frame are Louisa and two (probably) grandchildren. Bob Cat Ranch was nominally Irma’s ranch, so these could be her children. Although a bit difficult to see, the latter image captured one of the gambling prints offered in lot 198 on the wall just over Bill’s head. $800 - $1,000

189 William F. Cody and Family at the Pahaska Tepee on the Trail From Cody to Yellowstone, Plus Yellowstone Photographs By Haynes and More Lot of 36. One group shows the porch of the Pahaska Tepee, carriage out front, approx. 5 x 7 in. image on larger mount. Plus Buffalo Bill standing on the porch of the Pahaska Tepee, approx. 4 x 5.5 in. And 5 x 7 in. image with label on verso: “When we stopped to change teams.” In a different hand: “Taken at the site of future Wapiti Inn. Logs on ground for Inn to be built near Elk Fork. Tourist in wagons headed for Yellowstone.” Another group includes three images on postcards of Pahaska Tepee/Hotel, one in winter. Plus a postcard of Cork Screw Bend in Yellowstone. And seven other images, most postcard-sized: one of Pahaska in winter, with snow to the roof line of the porch; one of people cooking over an open fire, food skewered on sticks; one of men “Digging ditch for Pahaska Flume”; one of a couple teams of horses around a carriage; one of a couple on a lookout; one of a woman standing alone; and one of an elk in snow to its belly. Another group includes scenes from Yellowstone, including: a Haynes photo, “3564 Boiling Spring, Gibbon Canyon,” Boudoir Views, with Haynes’ NPRR St. Paul identification both in the negative and on verso. There are two smaller images, 3.5 x 4.5 in., one is identified as a Haynes image, the other is very similar and probably also his. One is a room at Old Faithful Inn, the other “Yellowstone Park Bears” (who appear to be foraging in the dump). Plus there is a group of six snapshots ranging from 2 x 2.75 to 3.5 x 5.75 in., mostly of bears, near, far and standing in the road, plus a few scenic views, including a waterfall and a horse silhouetted on a rock pile. And there is a group of 12 early postcards, ten in color, highlighting Yellowstone scenes: natural bridge, Red Rock, the lower falls, Wildcat Point, Lookout Mountain, tourists and bears, Thumb Paint Pots, Fort Yellowstone, Punch Bowl Spring, Col. Cody in the Office of Irma Hotel, and a card with a cartoon image of Cody holding a flag with “Welcome to Cody Wyoming The Home of “Buffalo Bill” and the Scenic Entrance to Yellowstone Park” with a map of the region at his feet, plus two blackand-white cards of Teddy Roosevelt entering Yellowstone and having a “cowboy breakfast.” There is also a postcard-sized photo of the sign marking Shoshone Dam, with all of its statistics (i.e., height, capacity of reservoir, etc.). $600 - $800

They also contain Mrs. and/or Mr. Sam Aldridge. All taken at Bob Cat Ranch. Two images approx. 3 x 5.5 in. One is labeled on verso: “Aunt May’s Ranch - ‘The Bobcat Ranch.’” The other appears to be the same cabin as the first three images taken from a different angle. Five 4 x 5 in. images are different angles of the cabin at Bob Cat, two with manuscript notes on front. 90

Plus one interior shot, 6.375 x 8.375 in. On verso “Bob Cat Ranch / So. Fork River / Cody Wyo.” Cozy interior with log walls, oriental carpets on floors and two bobcat pelts on the wall on either side of a door to what appears to be the dining/kitchen area. Mary Hannah “May” Cody Bradford Decker (1852-1926) was William Cody’s youngest sister. The bond between the two was very close, and apparently he even took her with him on the plains occasionally. It is not surprising that she also had the ranch near her brother in Cody, WY. It was in her house in Denver that Cody died in 1917. $1,000 - $1,500

195 Mark Twain and His Boyhood Home Photograph 7.625 x 8.875 in. silver gelatin print on a 10 x 12 in. mount with the imprinted title Mark Twain and His Boyhood Home and Copyright 1902 by H. Tomlinson, Hannibal Mo., with similar credit in the negative at lower right. It is uncertain exactly how Cody acquired this photograph, but is known to have communicated with his famous contemporary. In fact, Twain may have played an important part in convincing Cody to take his show to Europe. After viewing two consecutive performances in 1884, Twain wrote to the showman: “...It is often said on the other side of the water that none of the exhibitions which we send to England are purely and distinctively American. If you will take the Wild West show over there, you can remove that reproach...” $800 - $1,000

Cody in the TE Ranch, all chromolithographed Detroit Photographic Co. prints from William Henry Jackson negatives, including 53406 - Utes - Ignacio, High Chief and 53414 - Pueblo Indians - Jose Jesus and Wife, each 6.5 x 9 in., in the original 10.75 x 13.75 in. mounts, and three 3.5 x 7 in. prints in the original 7.25 x 10.875 in. mounts: 51065 - Colorado - “Yamani,” A Runner for Chief Ouray; 51209 - A Moki - Farmer; and 51210 - Bringing in the Harvest. $1,500 - $2,000

197 Two Nicely Hand-Colored Photographs of Plains Indians 4.5 x 6.375 in. prints, mounted to 10 x 12 in. Both nicely tinted in several colors, one view showing chiefs and warriors among their tepees, the other showing women and children. A large performance tent in the background of the women’s view indicates these are likely Show Indians from the Oglala Lakota tribe, as were most of those employed by Buffalo Bill. $800 - $1,200

198 A Bluff in Chicago and Showdown at the 400 Prints Owned by William F. Cody and Displayed in His Home Prints by Thure De Thulstrup (Swedish/American, 1848-1930) and Albert Beck Wenzell (American, 1864-1917). The second is from a series of poker prints by Wenzell, one of which has the subtitle “Blue-bloods Playing for Blue Chips.” This one a bit different, however, in that the “blue-bloods” are joined by a Chinese dignitary. Very appropriate for William Cody who included individuals of many ethnic and national groups in his shows. The first print shows gentlemen playing cards in a proverbial “smokefilled room,” African American waiter with champagne and glasses on his tray. At least two others have ice buckets with champagne bottles at their feet, the “dead soldiers,” in all likelihood. No beer-swilling in these halls! Seltzer bottle on side table with cigar box on lower shelf. One of these prints is visible in a number of photographs of Buffalo Bill at the Bobcat Ranch, Lot 188. $600 - $800

199 Artist’s Palette Oil Painting Inscribed by Adolph Schwarz, Vienna, Signed on the Board to William F. Cody Adolph Schwarz (1869-1926). Oil on board (palette), 7.5 x 12 in., framed to 15.5 x 20 in. Signed at lower right Mr. W.F. Cody, Remember of Vienna, Adolph Schwarz, 1906. Large building in a park-like setting. Possibly where the show was in Vienna? $400 - $600

TERMS AND CONDITIONS By registering and bidding in an auction conducted by Cowan’s Auctions, Inc. (“Cowan’s”), bidders (whether present in person, by telephone, by agent, by written or telephone absentee bid instruction, or through a live internet connection) agree to be bound by these terms. These are the complete and only terms and conditions on which all property is offered for sale. Cowan’s retains the right to bar any bidder from participating in any auction and to exclude or reject any bid. 1) REGISTRATION. All bidders must register their name, permanent street address (no P.O. Boxes), and telephone number prior to the auction. Unless known to Cowan’s, all registrants are required to present two forms of identification, at least one of which must include a current photograph. Bidders may be required to present a valid Visa or MasterCard. By registering with Cowan’s or submitting an absentee bid form, an individual registrant authorizes Cowan’s to obtain a copy of his or her consumer credit report and authorizes Cowan’s, at its sole discretion, to use the information contained therein to make business decisions regarding the registrant’s participation in the bidding process. 2) ACCEPTANCE OF TERMS. Bidding on any item, whether in person, by phone, by absentee bid or via a live internet auction indicates the bidder’s agreement to be bound by these Terms and Conditions for Bidders. Any right of bidder under this agreement shall not be assignable and shall only be enforceable by the original buyer. The rights and obligations of the parties shall be governed by the laws of the state of Ohio. All bidders submit to the personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in Ohio. 3) TERMS OF SALE. Announcements made the day of auction take precedence over any previous communication. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any lot at any time before its final sale and to reject any bid for any reason. The highest bidder for each lot acknowledged by the auctioneer shall be the “buyer”. If any dispute arises as to any bidding, or between two or more bidders, at the sole discretion of the auctioneer, the successful bidder will be determined or the disputed lot shall be put up again at the last undisputed bid and resold. 4) BUYER’S PREMIUM. (a) Buyer’s Premium for “Antique and Modern Firearms” auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 15% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 10% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (b) Buyer’s Premium for “American History” and “World at War” auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 17 ½% of the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 12 ½% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (c) Buyer’s Premium for “Fine and Decorative Art”, “Modern Ceramics”, “American Indian and Western Art” , “Fine Jewelry and Timepieces” and any other specialized auctions; the Auctioneer will collect and retain from the Buyer, as additional commission, a premium equal to 20% the Sale Price of each Lot up to and including $200,000, plus 15% of the amount by which the Sale Price exceeds $200,000. (d) Buyer’s Premium for online, timed and other third-party bidding platforms may vary. 5) ESTIMATES AND RESERVES. Presale estimates are intended to be guides and may or may not reflect the ultimate hammer price of a lot. Cowan’s retains the right to change estimates on any lot up to time of sale. A reserve is a confidential minimum price agreed upon by the seller of the lot and Cowan’s. In the case of reserved lots, the seller has authorized Cowan’s to bid on seller’s behalf until the reserve price is reached. In no case will the reserve be higher than the low presale estimate. Cowan’s standard house reserve on all property at auction is one-half of the low estimate. 6) WARRANTIES AND DISCLAIMERS. Cowan’s makes a limited warranty only to the original buyer of record concerning the authenticity of each lot for a period of 14 days after bidder’s receipt of the purchased lot. If a buyer is not satisfied that the lot purchased is genuine, the buyer may, at his or her own expense, obtain the opinion of two mutually agreed upon recognized experts in the field of the disputed lot. If these experts determine that the item is not genuine, the buyer’s sole and exclusive remedy shall be the rescission of the sale and refund of the amount paid for the item. It is specifically understood and agreed that the rescission of the sale and refund is exclusive and in lieu of any other remedy which might otherwise be available as a matter of law or in equity, and such remedy is conditioned upon the buyer returning the property in the same condition as at the time of sale. Cowan’s shall not be liable for any incidental or consequential damages. All sales are final, with no returns or refunds except as provided in this limited warranty. Except as provided in the immediately proceeding paragraph, EVERY LOT IS SOLD “AS IS”, without any representations or warranties by Cowan’s or the seller as to merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, condition or value of the property, or the correctness or completeness of the catalogue or other description of the property, and no statement, whether written or oral, shall be deemed such a representation, warranty or assumption of liability. Cowan’s makes no representation or warranty that the buyer of manuscript material, photographs, prints or works of art will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights. Cowan’s does not guarantee the working order of any clock, watch, electronic or mechanical device. Dimensions given in the catalogue descriptions may be approximate. 7) DEFINITIONS OF AUTHORSHIP. “By” or “Maker/Artist” — in our opinion, the work is by the artist or maker stated “Attributed to” — in our opinion, the work is probably, but not definitely, by the artist or maker stated “Signed” or “Marked” — in our opinion, the signature or mark is that of the stated artist or maker “Bearing the signature (or mark) of” — in our opinion, the signature or mark is probably, but not definitely, that of the artist or maker stated “Circle of” — in our opinion, the work is of the period and by an artist or maker closely associated with the stated artist or maker “School of” — in our opinion, the work is by a pupil or follower of the stated artist or maker “Manner of” — in our opinion, the work is of the period and done in the style of the stated artist or maker “After” — in our opinion, the work is a copy of a work by the stated artist or maker 8) INSPECTION. Except for On-Line Only Auctions, all lots are available for inspection prior to the auction. Condition reports for most items can be found online at Cowan’s website, www.cowans.com, and prospective bidders are encouraged to contact Cowan’s directly for additional information regarding the condition of any lot. Cowan’s does not warrant the condition of any item. Buyers interested in the condition of an item are encouraged to contact Cowan’s and, to the best of our ability, we will document for the prospective bidder the condition status on any lot. Condition is always a subjective evaluation and final responsibility rests with the buyer to assess the condition of any item sold by Cowan’s. ABSENTEE, TELEPHONE AND INTERNET BIDDING Absentee and telephone bidding is offered as a free service to our customers and prospective bidders. Cowan’s shall not be responsible for any errors or failures in executing bids, either absentee, telephone or via the internet. 9) ABSENTEE BIDDING. Absentee bids are accepted via mail, fax, email and on Cowan’s website. Such bids will be posted with the time and date of arrival, with ties being awarded to the earliest bidder. Absentee bids that are faxed or emailed to Cowan’s need to be in the office at least 2 hours before the sale begins. An absentee bidder unknown to Cowan’s may be required to submit a bank letter of credit prior to the auction, or, using a credit card, deposit with Cowan’s a fee equaling 30% of the absentee bid. All absentee bids are executed competitively by a member of the auction staff. The auction staff will try to purchase the lot for the lowest price possible and will bid up to the amount designated by the absentee bidder only if necessary. Cowan’s does not accept “buy bids,” or absentee bids which have no limit. In the event of a tie bid between a floor and an absentee bidder, the floor bid will be honored.

10) TELEPHONE BIDDING. Bidding live via the telephone is available on a first come, first served basis for those lots with a low estimate of $500 or greater. In order for Cowan’s to efficiently serve the needs of those who wish to bid by phone, please note the following: • To participate in the auction by telephone, potential bidders must complete and sign the absentee bid form and check “I WISH TO BID BY TELEPHONE” for the designated lots. Potential bidders may also reserve a phone line on Cowan’s website. If faxing or emailing requests for phone bidding, they need to be in Cowan’s office 2 hours before the sale begins. Once the auction begins, requests left on Cowan’s website may not be retrieved by the staff. • Telephone bidders are advised to indicate an “insurance bid”, which amount will become an absentee bid, pursuant to the absentee bidding process set forth above, if Cowan’s can not reach the bidder by telephone for a particular indicated lot. • Telephone bidders must disable any caller ID or other call blocking mechanism. • Cowan’s sells about 100 lots per hour, so telephone bidders should plan accordingly. Cowan’s will attempt to reach each telephone bidder, but Cowan’s is in no way responsible for missed calls. 11) INTERNET BIDDING. Internet bidding is available through our website; additionally, Cowan’s may post certain auctions on Live Auctioneers (liveauctioneers.com) or Proxibid (proxibid.com). There may be terms which apply solely to internet bids that should be reviewed online at the time of sale. Cowan’s is not responsible for any failure to execute a bid and shall have no liability to any bidder for any technical or other failure associated with an internet auction. 12) BIDDING INCREMENTS. The following increments are used at the auction. Absentee bids must fall within these increments. Cowan’s will automatically reduce any absentee bid to the closest increment if the bid falls outside the published range of increments. For Bids Falling Between Bidding Increment $0-500 $25 $501-1,000 $50 $1,001-3,000 $100 $3,001-5,000 $250 $5,001 and up $500 or at the discretion of the auctioneer Cowan’s reserves the right to modify increments at any time during the auction. AFTER THE AUCTION 13) BUYER’S RESPONSIBILITY. Upon the fall of the hammer, title to the offered lot shall pass to the buyer and the buyer immediately (a) assumes full risk and responsibility for the lot, including liability for loss or damage and (b) is liable for payment of the Purchase Price (as defined below) to Cowan’s. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ask specific questions on condition related concerns prior to the auction. Cowan’s will not rescind sales with buyers that have disputes regarding firearm’s bore condition. 14) PURCHASE PRICE AND PAYMENT. The discounted “Purchase Price” for each lot shall equal the hammer price, buyer’s premium, sales tax and, if applicable, all packing, handling, insurance and shipping costs. Payment may be made with cash, personal or traveler’s check or credit card. Cowan’s reserves the right to hold a purchased lot until a check has cleared. A convenience fee of $15.00 will be assessed to all transactions made in the alternate payment channels: Phone payments are made available as a convenience outside Cowan’s Auctions customary payment channels, therefore these payments are qualified as payments made in the alternative payment channel. All forms of payment made using this method will be assessed the convenience fee. Please call Cowan’s Auctions if you have any questions regarding this policy. PLEASE NOTE: A surcharge of 2% will be assessed to all credit card transactions. This surcharge is not greater than our cost of acceptance. Buyers who are present at the auction must pay the full Purchase Price at the time of the sale. Buyers who bid by telephone or who are absentee bidders will be invoiced within 5 days after the close of the auction and must pay the full Purchase Price for each purchased lot within 14 days after the date of the auction. By signing the absentee bid form or placing a bid by telephone, an absentee bidder authorizes Cowan’s to charge the Purchase Price for each lot for which such bidder is the successful bidder to the credit card number provided by telephone or on the absentee bid form, unless payment in full or alternative payment instruction is received within 14 days after the date of the auction. No property will be released by Cowan’s unless the Purchase Price has been paid in full. Institutional billing may be available, and should be arranged prior to the auction. Cowan’s may impose late charges of 1.5% per month (or the highest interest rate allowed) on any amount owed to Cowan’s that remains unpaid after 30 days. Buyer shall be liable for any collection costs or attorney’s fees incurred by Cowan’s to collect payment, to the extent permitted by law. 15) SALES TAX. Buyers are required to pay any applicable state and local sales tax. 16) SHIPPING. At the request of the buyer, Cowan’s will authorize the shipment of purchased items usually within two weeks after payment has been received. Shipment is generally made via UPS or Fed-Ex Ground. Unless buyer gives special instructions, the shipping method shall be at the sole discretion Cowan’s Auctions. Cowan’s is in no way responsible for the acts or omissions of independent handlers, packers or shippers of purchased items or for any loss, damage or delay from the packing or shipping of any property. ADVICE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS. Cowan’s will not ship any package containing a firearm to any location other than within the United States. Buyers outside the United States must make their own shipping arrangements taking full risk for the transportation of any firearm. Property made of or containing certain plant or animal materials, such as coral, crocodile, ivory, whalebone, baleen, tortoiseshell, etc., may require a license or certificate before exportation from the United States and importation to another country. If you are purchasing items that contain these materials, you need to check the government wildlife import requirements in the countries from which and to which the item is being shipped prior to bidding. Since the export and import licenses are independently issued by the countries of origin and destination, obtaining one does not guarantee that you can obtain the other. Purchasers are responsible for making timely payments on items won at auction, even if a license is delayed or denied. 17) SHIPPING CHARGES. Buyers are required to pay for all packing, shipping and insurance charges. Overseas duty charges are the responsibility of the successful bidder. Be aware that for larger and/or valuable items, shipping charges can be substantial. 18) REMOVAL AND STORAGE OF PROPERTY. If purchased property has not been removed, or Cowan’s has not received shipping instructions within 21 days after the auction date, a $10 per item per day storage fee may be charged to the buyer. 19) CANCELLATION OF SALE. If purchased property remains in the custody of Cowan’s for a period of 60 days following the auction, Cowan’s may, at its option, cancel the sale, retaining as liquidated damages any payments made by the buyer, or resell the property at auction or by any other commercially reasonable means, for the account and at the risk of the buyer, and in such event, buyer shall be liable for the payment of all deficiencies plus all of Cowan’s costs, including but not limited to storage and costs of both sales. This right of cancellation is in addition to any and all other remedies available to Cowan’s. Copyright © 2014 Cowan’s Auctions
