AND WE'RE BACK! This summer, Belgian has witnessed an explosion of electronic music festivals. So many new players have jumped on the bandwagon that it’s hard to believeI❤TECHNO has been around for sixteen years – and counting! Thanks to you and an ever-growing electronic music landscape, we’ve been able to keep the fire burning – year after year. And guess what? It’s only getting hotter! Last year, I❤TECHNO recognized dubstep’s growing influence by inviting some of the key players over for what turned out to be a massive party. This year, we’ve decided to go all overboard and reserve an entire room for what is undoubtedly still one of the freshest genres in electronic music today. Nero, Chase & Status, Flux Pavillion and Skream vs. Benga – the Orange Room is yours. Demolish it as you please! At the same time, I❤TECHNO continues to support both the techno and electro scene and look for fresh talent in other places as well – like the new UK sensation Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, ready to prove they are in fact the future of electronic music; Feed Me with his perfect mixture of house, breaks and electro; Canblaster, already widely regarded as a genuine talent; and of course Gesaffelstein, the hottest producer around at the moment. Further add some electronic music legends and a large number of futuristic gods to the mix, and what have you got? That’s right: the biggest, meanest, craziest, wildest, sweatiest and still – since 1995 – most pioneering party in the world!

BOYS NOIZE
+
2007 saw the young Boys Noize become one of the most important actors in today’s electro-tech scene. He received much acclaim for his debut artist album ‘Oi Oi Oi’ and his incredibly successful remixes for Feist, David Lynch, N.E.R.D., Depeche Mode, Snoop Dogg and Chemical Broters. 2009’s ‘Power’ album just confirmed that status, with bangers as ‘Transmission’ and ‘Kontact Me’. In the meantime he spent studio time with Chilly Gonzales, Erol Alkan, Spank Rock and Scissor Sisters. But the kids on the dancefloor, and by extension everyone who heard his 2008 I❤TECHNO mix-cd, knows that he’s also one of the finest in putting a party on fire with his DJ-skills. www.boysnoize.com
THE SUBS live
These Ghent based beatbastards are your ultimate live experience. Live instruments, decks & EFX, and one crazy frontman, that somehow will be the ingredients for The Subs live at I❤TECHNO. After their debut album ‘Subculture’ - full of hit singles such as ‘Kiss My Trance’, ‘Music Is The New Religion’ and ‘Fuck That Shit’ - they came up with ‘The Pope Of Dope’ together with PartyHarders. They got a gold record (!) for it in Belgium, and now there’s the long-awaited follow-up album ‘Decontrol’. From what we can see, the first singles ‘Face Of The Planet’ and ‘Don’t Stop’ are looking to go that same way! After seeing them destroy the marquee at Rock Werchter, we strongly believe nothing can go wrong to make it an extraordinary party! www.thesubs.be
CROOKERS
Italians do it better! Drawing from influences of house, hip hop and beyond, Crookers blend their beats with the kind of fidget house finesse that makes the rest of us wonder how they do it. 4
Crookers have sleazed out dance floors with a catalogue of original tracks, but it’s their work as remixers that have made them one of the most requested producers in the scene. Their debut album ‘Tons Of Friends’ featured the likes of Kelis, Soulwax, Major Lazer, Spank Rock and Roisin Murphy just to name a few. And in 2009 they did a terrific job mixing the official I❤TECHNO compilation for us! Their latest work goes by the name of Dr. Gonzo, check it out! Rumour has it that they’re working on a new album to appear later this year, keep an eye on it! www.crookers.net
FAKE BLOOD live
There is very little known about Fake Blood. When his global crossover hit ‘Mars’ got released on Hervé’s Cheap Thrills label, his real identity was still a mystery. It even took some time before the English press could reveal it was in fact a disguise of DJ Touché. But that didn’t stop the remix offers from massively coming in; UNKLE, The Kills, Underworld, Armand Van Helden, Gossip… you name ‘em! Than there was the new single ‘I Think I Like It’ - which became at least as big - and his first mix-cd. The long-awaited new Fake Blood EP is due to come out this autumn. We can’t wait to see him at I❤TECHNO, where he’ll play live for the very first time! www.myspace.com/welovefakeblood
PROXY live
Proxy got discovered by Tiga’s brother Thomas on Myspace and is as far as we know the only Russian artist on Turbo. He’s definitely the godfather of the small but firm Russian electro scene emerging right now. Check out his label Mako for more on that subject. ‘Raven’, ‘Dance In Dark’ and ‘Vibrate’ are just a few of his banging club hits that you will know for sure. And his yet to be scheduled debut album is already said to sound like the electronic equivalent of an earthquake. We’re pretty sure he’ll reveal some of his new bangers during his live set at I❤TECHNO, don’t miss it! www.facebook.com/useproxy
CANBLASTER
Canblaster is the prodigious child from the north of France. Ultra active producer and confirmed dj, Canblaster is the wild card of the Club Cheval collective. Legendary artists such as Underground Resistance, Basement Jaxx or Yellow Magic Orchestra made him fall in love with electronic music. Obsessed with vintage synthesizers, Canblaster is producing massive tracks, using Detroit pads, UK broken rhythms, French chords and that Japanese mystical sense of melody. His tunes were quickly playlisted by Sinden, Diplo, Brodinski & Teki Latex. His remixes for Drop The Lime, Crystal Fighters, Style Of Eye & Slagmalsklubben are here to confirm his great talent. soundcloud.com/canblaster
RAVING GEORGE
This young Belgian lady DJ only began her raving flight in 2010, but she definitely took off big time!! After winning a contest in “Switch”, the dance show on our national radio station Studio Brussel, she became one of their new monthly residents, and she immediately saw herself getting booked at huge festivals like Tomorrowland, Pukkelpop, Feest In Het Park and Laundry Day. Now it’s time for her maiden trip at I❤TECHNO... Keep an eye on this girl will you! www.facebook.com/ravinggeorge

YELLOW ROOM
+ Ever since he first played I❤TECHNO in 2006, Boys Noize hasn’t missed one edition. ‘You might want to start calling me the new Dave Clarke’ – which is funny, because Dave Clarke is one the ‘new’ artists on Boysnoize Records. First things first though: what’s your earliest recollection of I❤TECHNO? BOYS NOIZE: ‘The great thing about my first time at the festival is that I got to play two times – pretty unforgettable. As a young and upcoming producer you hear these thing about this festival and you think ‘man, if only I could play there one day’. And then Stephen and David gave me a call and asked me if I wanted to open their room at I❤TECHNO and play in between Soulwax Nite Versions and 2ManyDJs. Duh! So I get there at eight o’clock – expecting to warm up for Justice and save my best records for when I have to play again later that night. But when the doors
BOYS NOIZE: ‘Oh, no. That’s something else: I’m releasing a track on – surprise, surprise – Cocoon Recordings! I did so many tracks over the years and some of them don’t feel 100% Boysnoize Records to me – including this old skool Carl Craig inspired tune that I play all the time. So I thought I’d give it to the Main Guy and luckily Sven (Väth) loved it. It’s coming out in September on Cocoon and then Dave is re-releasing his Red series on my label – featuring a couple of new remixes of course. It was his idea and I said ‘yes’ right away. I mean, he could have picked any big techno label in the world but he chose BNR. (Laughs) Call it a nice little middle finger to all the techno heads living in their own narrowminded world.’ To confuse people even more: you’re also releasing the new Spank Rock album – one of the hottest hip-hop acts of the last five years. BOYS NOIZE: ‘And I’m also very excited about that! To be honest: it’s a bit scary as well. Naeem (Juwan aka MC Spank Rock) is a really big star and obviously BNR isn’t a hip-hop label. Then again, the album sounds very electronic and the label has never been about one sound to begin with. It’s always been a place where artists can think out of the box and even crossover to other genres, which is exactly what I’m doing with Spank Rock right now.’ You’re also one of the producers of the album. BOYS NOIZE: ‘Yes, and I ended up mixing the entire album as well. I met Naeem in the US – when he was really struggling to get his new album on track. Some people had let him down and I offered to help. Next thing you know: we’re in the studio in Berlin and he’s asking me if I also want to put out his album. I humbly agreed.’
progresses at an incredible speed so I expect a lot from him in the future.’ We recently made a discovery as well: a sloweddown version of Avalanche, the track you made with Erol Alkan. BOYS NOIZE: ‘Yeah, this guy told me about it in LA. Crazy, man! I wouldn’t say I like it more than the original but I must admit it does sound very futuristic – in a good way. I’m also very excited about the new version of Avalanche we just finished with Jarvis Cocker – he’s singing on it. At first, we just asked him to sing over the original track but when we heard what he did – he reinterpreted the Leonard Cohen song of the same name – we got so excited that we started redoing the whole song to fit his vocals. Now it has an even more crazy energy. Plus: we’ve asked guys like Canblaster to make some new remixes for it.’
Before I forget: do you prepare something special when you play I 3 Techno? BOYS NOIZE: ‘I do! You know I still like playing smaller clubs in cities like Berlin, London and Amsterdam because it’s more fun and challenging than playing big festivals, where a lot people expect me to play my own stuff. Obviously, I❤TECHNO is a big festival too but I think it has the vibe of a small club. I can really play some deep stuff there, in line with the current state of electronic music, and I always include some cutting-edge techno as well. Like I said, it’s never about one style – not with me.’
Middle finger You too! open, hundreds of people start running towards the DJ booth. Within fifteen minutes that whole room was packed – 5,000 people – and I wasn’t even that famous back then! That’s when I knew Belgian is a special place. So yeah, I had to come back every year since. Sorry, Dave, but I’m going after your record!’ (Laughs) Okay, now you can tell about Dave Clarke and Boysnoize Records. Was that the big secret you tweeted about a couple of days ago?
I think you also just signed to young but very different producers: Audionite and Scientist. BOYS NOIZE: ‘Very different indeed but both very talented as well. I actually found them after I somewhat jokingly remarked on Twitter that I needed more Germans on the label – and then people started sending me tons of links. Audionite and Scientist popped out – the former because of his dark electronic sound, the latter because he’s only 17 but he really knows his shit – from moody electronica to straight-up techno. He also

PAUL KALKBRENNER live
Do we still need to introduce Paul Kalkbrenner? This producer, actor and die-hard party animal is working hard on his career since many many years in the techno scene in Germany. He already had quite a following, but in 2008 he finally got his long deserved big breakthrough. Because of the movie ‘Berlin Calling’ (Paul played the main character and composed the soundtrack) and the radio hit ‘Sky And Sand’ - for which he even got a gold record in Belgium, quite unique in this genre! - a whole new audience got acquainted to his name. Recently he released a live DVD, and now there’s a brand new album to listen to: ‘Icke Wieder’. paulkalkbrenner.net
LEN FAKI
When Len Faki moved to Berlin in 2003, he already looked back to years of fruitful productivity and the management of two highly acclaimed techno labels: Monoid and Feis. His move to Berlin marked a decisive turning point in his career. With his new labels Figure and Podium he founded a platform and trademark for his idea of techno music. He now holds a residency at Berghain, a position which further fueled his open-minded approach as both DJ and producer. In 2009 he released a fantastic mix-cd on their label Ostgut Ton and of course he’s a high in demand remixer too. www.lenseries.com
BRODINSKI
+
Brodinski is another one of those French young guns. Only 24 years old but already a fast rising star in the current electro scene. His debut ‘Bad Runner’ on Mental Groove, that he made together with his good friend Yuksek, got played by Erol Alkan, Tiga and all the other usual suspects. That was enough to kick-start his career and in the meantime he’s a regular on labels such as Turbo, Southern Fried, Grizzly and Relief Reocrds, whilst doing remixes for people like Klaxons, Mixhell 8
To the younger generation of clubbers and DJs for whom the funtastic era of 2001-2003 revivalism was a missed experience, Gesaffelstein represents a double-breasted jacket of nostalgia for everything from the power of industrial and 80’s new wave to the Gigolo-glam of early Kittin & The Hacker, Vitalic and Tiga. Gesaffelstein has single-handedly updated an entire genre, sharpened the edges, and notably traded in the camp and pastiche that made ‘electroclash’ a dirty word, for a refined and stylish simplicity. Gesaffelstein makes futuristic party bombs which skillfully draw from our favourite dance music of the last 30 years. The breakdowns are massive and very French, but never out of order. His album is due to be out in early 2012, but we bet he’s going to be trying out some of his bombs already at I❤TECHNO! www.gesaffelstein.com
FEED ME live
Debuting by being the first external artist to feature on the infamous mau5trap label, Feed Me’s array of hard hitting electronica with a grin quickly caught the eyes and ears of listeners worldwide. After a succession of high profile remixes, Feed Me continued to develop his distinct visual style and sound with his first extended play. The acclaimed eight-track ‘Feed Me’s Big Adventure’ immediately took Beatport by storm with 6 tracks hitting the top 10, gathering fans throughout different genres. Lining up this year with a flurry of festivals and support slots with Deadmau5, the sharp-teethed monster is coming of age, and making big noise in 2011. www.facebook.com/youfeedme
FRITZ KALKBRENNER live
His album that got released end of last year was called ‘Here Today, Gone Tomorrow’, but that’s definitely not applicable to the man
himself! Here in Belgium the public probably knows him best as the voice on ‘Sky & Sand’, the golden single from his brother Paul Kalkbrenner’s “Berlin Calling” soundtrack. Their first and to date only collaboration. But Fritz Kalkbrenner is much more than this lovely voice. He makes great techno music, with a lot of soul influences. Just check out his album and you’ll be amazed of how much talent there is in the Kalkbrenner family. There must have been something in the water... www.fritzkalkbrenner.com
SIMINA GRIGORIU
Born in Romania, raised in Toronto and since then arriving to Berlin, Simina Grigoriu discovered her love for techno thanks to the music of Jeff Mills, Adam Beyer, Josh Wink and Juan Atkins. Next to being Paul Kalkbrenner’s favourite opening DJ of choice during his stadium tours, her DJ skills bring her all over the place really. Alongside her busy schedule, Simina is currently starting to work on her first album. She has already released music on Berlin label Sonat Records, as well as with Italian labels Intelectro Vibe and Frequenza Records. More of her is coming up on labels such as Bohemian Yacht Club, Real Music Records and Phase Insane Records. A fresh talent for you to discover at I❤TECHNO! www.facebook.com/siminagrigoriumusic
FADER
Fader - also a music journalist and an employee at N.E.W.S. Records in Ghent - is DJ’ing since 1997 and plays a blend of deep techno and mnml house. Constantly looking for those special tracks, but always with the dancefloor in mind. Since five years he also runs his own Curle label to high critical acclaim. There were recent contributions from much respected artists such as Efdemin, Roman Fluegel, Jonas Kopp and Patrice Scott, with much more goodies ready on the shelf. Fader will be warming up the Green Room this year. www.myspace.com/doffice

GREEN ROOM Three years ago, Annie Mac called him ‘the most exciting DJ and producer to explode onto the scene.’ This year, Brodinski has already proven he is still on top of his game with a new release on Green Velvet’s label and now he’s also getting ready for his third visit to I❤TECHNO. Let’s talk Green Velvet! BRODINSKI: ‘Cool! Curtis (Jones a.k.a. Green Velvet) got in touch with me a while ago because he was relaunching his label Cajual Records and he wanted me on board. He asked me if I wanted to record an EP for him and I said yes – of course. Green Velvet has always been a hero of mine so doing something on his label (Brodinski released the EP Manifesto on Cajual’s sublabel Relief Records in February) was a dream come true.’
+
'
Do you remember who was most surprised when you told them the news? BRODINSKI: ‘The kids! I think a lot of young people simply don’t know how big and important Cajual was in the ‘90s. They all expect me to release new music on trending labels like Turbo and Night Slugs but it was a really big thing for me to release an EP on Cajual. In the end though, most young people seemed to like it and my friends thought it was coolest thing in the world. I also heard that a couple of old people didn’t get it but I feel I really can’t be held responsible for everyone’s happiness.’ (Laughs)
tEChNo is thE NEW ElECtRo
'
First there’s you releasing new music on his label and now everyone starts playing Green Velvet’s Flash again. BRODINSKI: ‘I think techno is getting back – it’s the new electro! Seriously though, people like Gesaffelstein and Len Faki are really pushing the boundaries of the genre again so it’s easy to see why people are also getting excited about it – again. Oh, and for the record: I love the Jamie Jones remix of Flash.’
Thanks for sharing and – come to think of it – discovering Gesaffelstein! BRODINSKI: (Laughs) ‘I’m sure he would have had no problem making it on his own. I found out about him three years ago, when he released the EP Modern Walk on GoodLife. Later on I met him in Paris and introduced him to my management. I had a really good feeling about him – simple as that. We also get along really well: we’re often on tour together and in September we’re releasing a split single.’ Are you also still working with Yuksek every once in a while? BRODINSKI: ‘Definitely. It’s just that he’s been really busy with his new album and now he’s also touring with a brand new live set. The Krays (the project they’ve been working on together) is still very much alive though; we’re just taking it easy right now. In the meantime I’ve got new remixes coming up for Gesaffelstein and Nero, and I just finished my FabricLive compilation. I thought I’d make it nice and slow – go deeper than before. I think it worked out really well and I can’t wait for it to come out in September.’ In a recent interview you listed Brussels as the party capital of the world while Paris barely made your top five. You don’t like it there anymore? BRODINSKI: ‘I’m just hard on my own city, I guess. I love playing in Paris but at the same time I want Parisian nightlife to keep pushing the envelope. So I don’t want Paris to be number one because than everybody would become lazy and we’d fall from grace faster than you think. Besides, there’s definitely room for improvement – trust me. Brussels on the other hand is a magical party city: great people, great vibe, it’s just perfect. Also, whenever I’m in Belgium, I actually get to hear the songs I play on the radio. I find that truly amazing. We don’t have shows like Switch or radio stations like Studio Brussel in France – and that truly makes it even more exciting to play there.’ How did you enjoy playing I❤TECHNO in 2008 and 2009? BRODINSKI: ‘I can’t even begin to describe what it was like. I think I❤TECHNO is one those festivals you wish you could play every year so when you actually get an invitation to come back the next year you feel like you’re in heaven. It’s one of five festivals in the world that really matter and I think DJs become addicted to it just as easily as visitors. In other words: yes, I’m hooked – for life.’

CHASE & STATUS live
+
Chase & Status are called the most exciting British producers around, counting N*E*R*D, Andy C, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg amongst their fans. Their love for drum’n’bass brought the two together in the mid 90’s. Not long after they were filling countless dance floors, and in 2004 they also started making their own music. Fast forward to 2009 when their single ‘End Credits’ was the road straight ahead towards mainstream success and installed the duo as the biggest crossover act since Pendulum. Their second album ‘No More Idols’ (2011) – featuring Cee-Lo Green, Dizzee Rascal and White Lies – consolidates their new status. It’s a whirlwind in which dubstep, grime, hip-hop, funk and garage are flying around. Some Belgian pride: the duo are big fans of our very own Netsky. www.facebook.com/chaseandstatus
KATY B live
Katy B is a British singer, graduated of the famous BRIT school. Everybody will definitely know her debut solo single on Rinse ‘Katy On A Mission’, which was produced by Benga. It was one of those tracks that took dubstep to a pop level, but totally got away with it. On her debut album ‘On A Mission’ Katy B doesn’t stick exclusively to dubstep, it includes as much garage, house or UK funky. ‘On A Mission’ also features the singles ‘Lights On’ and ‘Broken Record’. Katy B for sure has one of the most amazing voices, but at I❤TECHNO she’ll also bring her live band. Expect them to throw one hell of a party at Flanders Expo! katyonamission.com
SKREAM vs BENGA ft. Youngman & Pokes
Last year Magnetic Man performed at I❤ TECHNO, the supergroup formed by dubstep dons Skream, Benga and Artwork. This year Skream & Benga will mix it up for you, with the help of Youngman & Pokes. Rising out of the early ‘00s underground, they spent the early part of the decade co-building the dark, bassy genre now known as dubstep from their HQ in Croydon. As individuals, their records speak for them12
selves. Now these two superstar DJs, producers, but first of all friends, come together to take on the world with their mutant basslines. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see them together at I❤TECHNO!

NERO
Nero have become a big name in both the drum and bass and dubstep scenes, often fusing both styles of music in their DJ-sets. They started making DnB in 2004. Since then Dan and Joe’s tracks have caused quite a stir, gaining huge support from DJ’s like Andy C, Grooverider, Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Adam F, Skream, Tiesto and Diplo. Nero’s consistent releases have made them one of the most talked about acts in dubstep. Of course they have also remixed anyone from La Roux over Deadmau5 to N*E*R*D with devastating effect. Last year Nero won the 2010 Beatport Awards for best dubstep act and best dubstep track for “Act Like You Know”. And as we type this, they are releasing their debut album on Chase & Status’ label MTA! www.thisisnero.com
KNIFE PARTY
Knife Party is no other than Pendulum’s Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen who leave their guitars at home and bring the heaviest face melting electronic beats and bass to the dance floor. They mix up everything from dark house to twisted dubstep, without holding back from any boundaries! As Pendulum they already sold more than one million albums worldwide. With Knife Party on the other hand, they already did remixes for other big names, such as Swedish House Mafia and Nero. Their first EP is scheduled for release in September, with another Swedish House Mafia co-operation coming up in October. It doesn’t need a clairvoyant to predict them a golden future!! soundcloud.com/knifepartyinc
FLUX PAVILION
Flux Pavilion has been influenced by hard hitting dance music from the likes of The Prodigy, Basement Jaxx and Rusko, especially loving the high energy madness that dance music was capable of. It was only a matter of time before he found his own sound in early 2008 when dubstep came into his life - he hasn’t been the same man since. Already adept with production skills he was soon off the starting block and his tunes were in swift circulation on the dubstep boards and Flux Pavilion was quickly becoming a familiar name in the scene. Together with his childhood friend Doctor P, he formed the now infamous Circus Records and rapidly became one of the main players in the dancefloor dubstep family. www.facebook.com/fluxpavilion
JAKWOB
Jakwob first appeared on the radar thanks to his bootleg of Ellie Goulding’s “Starry Eyed”. He immediately saw the remix requests coming in from Robyn, Empire Of The Sun, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Diplo and many others. His eclectic style transcends genres combining elements of dubstep, electro, ghetto-tech and breakbeat. Jakwob also launched his own label Boom Ting Recordings, and after getting singed to Mercury Records he is currently working on his debut album as well as several productions for other artists. Not bad for a 22 year old! www.jakwob.com

Jamaica Calling
'
They’ve won five Official Drum & Bass Awards, parked five of their own songs in the UK Top 40, made even more hit singles and remixes for artists like Rihanna, The Prodigy and Example, and they’re about to turn I❤TECHNO upside down. Brothers and sisters, give it up for Saul Milton and Will Kennard a.k.a. Chase and Status! UK Bass is so hot again these days that it’s hard to imagine there was a time when it had – well, let’s be honest – gotten a bit out of fashion. According to you, what has been the recent turning point? WILL: ‘It’s hard to pinpoint one moment in time but I think the whole dubstep movement played a major role in bringing drum & bass back in the spotlight. From the birth of grime and the beginning of dubstep in the early 2000s to artists like Skream and Benga really working their magic, there was simply no stopping dubstep or denying its significance as an underground force. It all took flight from there – with radio stations and music journalists getting excited; songs entering the UK charts; the genre crossing over to the US, where artists like Skrillex started redefining it again; and now even Jay-Z and Kanye West are on board. It’s been a crazy ride and we’ve all benefited from it – dubstep and drum & bass artists alike.’ Despite the fact that both dubstep and drum & bass have crossed over to pretty much every country in the world by now, UK producers still rule the scene. How come The Force is much stronger where you live? WILL: (Laughs) ‘I think we’re just really lucky that the UK is such a multi-cultural place. From drum & bass to acid and garage, there has always been an emphasis on bass – and a lot of it stems from Jamaican reggae dub culture. Like with drum & bass, all you needed to do was add some funk and breaks to it – simple as that. And the UK being a genuine melting pot has not just helped kick-start drum & bass or dubstep, it is also what has kept both scenes alive.’ That and massive radio support? WILL: ‘Yes, definitely! It’s easy to think nothing of it when you’re used to it, but I’m sure we’ve got the most open-minded radio stations in the world. And I’m not just talking about former pirate radio stations like Rinse FM, where Dizzee Rascal and Wiley got their break. I’m also talking about the BBC and people like Zane Lowe and Annie Mac, who reach millions of people all over the country. You just don’t get that kind of support in – per example – the US, where radio stations are a lot more corporate and music is just a commodity.’
What about the drum & bass party scene in the UK? I❤TECHNO holds up to 35,000 people. Ever played at similar events in the UK or are dubstep and drum & bass still more restricted to smaller venues? WILL: ‘There are lots of small, intimate dubstep and drum & bass parties across the country – and those are great. But we’ve also got some really big summer festivals in the UK where artists like us, Skream and Benga get to play for 20,000 people. I guess that’s still 15,000 short of I❤TECHNO but it’s already pretty massive to us. Oh, and in November we’re headlining UKF Bass Culture at London’s Alexandra Palace. UKF is quite possibly the biggest website on dubstep and drum & bass in the world and they’re throwing this enormous party where Flux Pavilion and Doctor P are playing as well. Still no 35,000 people but you know: we don’t mind playing for 10,000 people every once in a while. Keeps us balanced.’ (Laughs) On to the annoying ‘this is Belgium so we have to ask you this’ question: how do you feel Netsky is holding up amidst all those UK producers? WILL: ‘Extremely well, I’d say. We really love that guy – every time we play in Belgium, we try to meet up. Actually, we’ve even asked him to do a remix for our last single but unfortunately that didn’t go through. He’s in high demand.’ Can you hear he’s not UK? WILL: ‘In his music, you mean? I’ve never really given it any thought but maybe a little bit, yeah. He has a very British style though so if I didn’t know any better and you’d tell me he’s from London, I’d believe you. The same can’t be said about a lot of American drum & bass producers, whose tracks sound too perfect – too clinical. Trust me: that’s not British at all. In fact, those early drum & bass tracks were often glamorously underproduced. They didn’t sound polished whatsoever. That’s also what I liked about them.’ Just so people at I❤TECHNO know when it’s time to breathe again: do you still play Fool Yourself at the end of every set? WILL: ‘Only when we play live. Such a loud and noisy song full of energy, it’s perfect to end a gig with. But expect to hear different sounds from us when we DJ: lots of cutting edge tracks that no one has ever heard of. Going back to our roots, man!’

CARL CRAIG 69 live
As part of the celebrations for the 20th anniversary of his Planet-E imprint, legendary Detroit producer Carl Craig is touring live under his 69 guise for the very first time. He will only perform a few exclusive dates, and I❤TECHNO is very honoured to be one of them!! As 69, Carl Craig produced the first ever EP for Planet-E in 1991 – ‘4 Jazz Funk Classics’ – a release inspired from his love of the disturbing sound and vision of English avant-garde group, Throbbing Gristle. Following releases included iconic masterpieces such as ‘Sound On Sound’, ‘Jam The Box’, ‘Desire’, ‘Pungtang’ and the album ‘The Sound Of Music’. In 2009 Planet-E also released a limited edition 69 vinyl box-set, entitled ‘The Legendary Adventures Of A Filter King’. For the 69 show, Carl Craig will perform live a selection of the finest 69 classic releases, infused with masks, darkness and amazing visuals to stimulate all senses! planet-e.net
LAURENT GARNIER LBS
The godfather of the French techno scene. He founded the influential F-Com label with Eric Morand and was responsible for all time classics like ‘The Man With The Red Face’, ‘Crispy Bacon’ and ‘Acid Eiffel’. At I❤TECHNO this year he will be presenting “L.B.S.”, which could be explained as “Live Booth Sessions”. This club orientated project will bring together Laurent Garnier (DJ & machines), Benjamin Rippert (keyboards) and Stephane “Scan X” Dri (machines). One could say it’s the best of both worlds between a DJ-set and a live show with musicians. Don’t miss this exclusive experience at I❤TECHNO!! www.laurentgarnier.com
AGORIA
+
Agoria first gained international recognition with a series of 12”s on PIAS in 2002, which were followed by the acclaimed album ‘Blossom’ a year 16
later. Since then, Agoria has released two more long-players; ‘The Green Armchair’ (2006) and the soundtrack ‘Go Fast’ (2008), all showcasing Agoria’s talent for creating deep, stripped-back, melodic, techno tracks. In addition Agoria has compiled three mix-cd’s and founded his own imprint. InFiné is a label that follows no rules, shies away from trends and features young, new talents, from various parts of the world. Agoria’s own debut on the label only came in 2009 with his 12” ‘Magnolia/ Libellules’. However, with his new third album ‘Impermanence’ one can clearly hear that InFiné has also had an influence on Agoria’s own music. www.facebook.com/agoriaofficial
PSYCATRON live
You’d be forgiven for wondering just where Psycatron have sprung from over the past few years to their current position as one of the leaders of a new school of techno on the international electronic scene. Their discography is beginning to read like an A to Z of the world’s finest labels, with amongst others Planet E Communications, Tresor, our very own R&S, Sven Väth’s Cocoon label, John Digweed’s Bedrock imprint, Simple Records... Although difficult to define, their sound has its roots based somewhere between the dance music capitals of Detroit and Berlin, but it’s Psycatron’s distinctive Western European take on things that makes them stand out and peddle their own groove, regardless of what’s the flavour of the month. Without a doubt one of the acts to watch at I❤TECHNO this year! www.psycatron.com
SEBASTIEN SAN
Sebastien San grew up to the sounds of Kraftwerk, Giorgio Moroder, Stevie Wonder, Prince and Serge Gainsbourg. He went from working in a record shop over being a DJ and throwing parties to becoming a globally well respected techno producer. He began releasing on DJ Hell’s Gigolo imprint, and has since than released records on Carl Craig’s legendary Detroit label Planet E Communications, Rush Hour, Echocord Colour, Len Faki’s Figure label, our very own We Play House Recordings... the list of quality labels is endless. He also worked together with the deplored Detroit legend Aaron-Carl. With many more projects in the pipeline, Sebastien shows no signs of slowing down. www.myspace.com/sebastiensan

RED ROOM
'
It was either this or working in a record store Think this is the first time Agoria plays I❤TECHNO? Think again. While the French producer never played inside Flanders Expo, he was one of thirty acts to grace the lineup of I❤TECHNO Outdoor in 2003 – sharing a stage with Alexander Kowalski, Sven Väth, Speedy J and Deetron.
Good times? AGORIA: ‘Of course! My debut album Blossom was about to be released so that gig couldn’t have come at a better time. My stage’s line-up was also very impressive and I feel that’s important. Like this year, playing with Laurent Garnier, you just know the flow will be perfect. With him and the other artists in my room, I know I’ll be able to play the music I like – which is not always the case. Sometimes I arrive at a party and there’s this DJ playing who is on a completely different planet than me. Don’t get me wrong: I like to play all kinds of music. Recently at Sónar I was mixing disco, indie and techno all in one set. But if there’s absolutely no musical connection with the guy playing before you, you can’t just take over and start doing your own thing. The result could be disastrous.’ (Laughs) So bottom line: the secret to a good party is the running order? AGORIA: ‘Well, yes! It’s not enough to book a bunch of good deejays. The order in which they play is equally important. Oh, and if possible: let everyone play two-hour sets – at least! A lot of festivals are now having DJs play for one hour and that’s just too short. It’s like you need to get all hands in the air within five minutes or you’re
'
not doing a good job – and that’s just crazy. I need time to build up a set. Yes, even when I’m playing big festivals.’
continue showing that other side of me – the side that discovers new producers like Space Dimension Controller and plays their stuff at parties.’
Check! You know, every year some people complain about the fact that I❤TECHNO isn’t about ‘real techno’ anymore. What’s your view on that? AGORIA: ‘Well, I still make techno. Does that count? (Laughs) Seriously though, I think it depends on what you call techno. To me, growing up in the ‘90s, it’s always been about music with no message and no boundaries. Techno was so many things at once but most importantly: it was openminded. So two decades later, it seems only normal that the scene has evolved – with some people still making classic techno and others having gone in completely different direction. Thank God!’
Space Dimension Controller, Zodiac Free Arts Club, Izmabad, your Fabric mix is full of interesting new things – mixed with Carl Craig and DJ Kaos. AGORIA: ‘Exactly the way I like it: mixing generations! You know, before I became a DJ, I wanted to work in a record store. I want to share my passion for music but not sound like a professor! I don’t want to teach; I want to communicate.’
Beginning of this year, you released your excellent third album Impermanence almost simultaneously with a mix album for Fabric – which was a lot more ‘dance floor’ than Impermanence. Was that your way of telling people: ‘See, I can still make you dance too!’ AGORIA: (Laughs) ‘It could have been but it was more coincidence – though a rather nice coincidence, I must admit. When I make an album, I want it to be a real album – a sort of landscape with a real story and real soul. What I don’t want is for it to be a collection of random songs with people skipping tracks to go to the dance floor stuff. I want it to be different and fresher than anything I’ve done before – regardless of its party potential. So I’m happy when people listen to the album and say they like it but at the same time I also want to
So what will you be communicating in the near future? AGORIA: ‘I guess the most important thing is the release of my new track Singing on Dixon’s label Innervisions. He fell totally in love with it and also made a remix for it. Then I’m also working on a special project for the Trans Musicales festival in Rennes in December. It’ll be a very special DJ set – my personal testimony about everything I liked from 1989 until today. Normally, my DJ sets are totally improvised but this time around I’m working with a real synopsis: everything is fully prepared.’ Twenty-two years? You’re talking thousands of songs! AGORIA: ‘Yeah, but it’s not going to be a best of. Just wait and see. Rennes will of course get the world premiere but I also want to do it in other places. I can’t say anymore at this time – except that I’ll be mixing things that are not supposed to be mixed. I can’t wait!’

STEVE AOKI
Since founding Dim Mak Records, Steve Aoki has stepped into the limelight himself as a DJ and producer remixing the likes of Michael Jackson, The Killers, Lenny Kravitz, Weezer, Tiga and more. More recently he’s been collaborating with likeminded producers ranging from Armand Van Helden, Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Boys Noize, The Faint, D.I.M. & The Bloody Beetroots and can now be found readying his debut artist album which includes collaborations from the likes of Lil Jon, Sky Ferreira, Travis Barker, Kele of Bloc Party, Kid Cudi and [[[zuper blahq]]] aka Will.i.am. We’re sure you still remember last year’s amazing I❤TECHNO compilation mixed by Steve Aoki! dimmakrecs.com/artists/steve-aoki
DIGITALISM live
Germany’s Digitalism are mashing garage band attitude with pumping electro music while in cahoots with the stylish French dance label Kitsuné. Their loose heavily distorted rough grooves and blankly delivered lyrics owe as much to Joy Division as they do to Daft Punk. For the past years, they have been the go-to men for remixes, having reworked the Klaxons, Dave Gahan, Tiga and Daft Punk. Their debut album ‘Idealism’ was one of 2007’s best albums and this year they finally released the long-awaited follow-up called ‘I Love You, Dude’. www.thedigitalism.com
BIRDY NAM NAM live
Birdy Nam Nam is a group of four French DJ’s, known in the French underground since many years. They won the DMC World Championships several times, so you know we’re talking scratches and turntablism here! In 2005 they released their first album entirely created with nothing but turntables. One year later it got followed up by a (must see!) live DVD, and in 2009 there was ‘Manual For Successful Rioting’, which sounded much more electro. Now they are back with their 3rd album ‘Defiant Order’, that they 22
conceived together with Para One and serves a cool mix of hip hop, R’n’B, house & us techno. www.birdynamnam.com
CASSIUS
Together with Daft Punk and Etienne De Crécy, Philippe Zdar (Motorbass) and Boombass - together known as Cassius - were responsible for the French Touch movement in the 90s. But in 2011 they are still together, and more importantly, still going strong, as they proved with their megahit “I <3 U So” on Ed Banger Records earlier this year. Currently, they’re together in the studio, writing the follow-up to their last album ‘15 Again’. In the meantime Zdar kept himself more than busy, producing albums for Phoenix, The Rapture and his all-time heroes The Beastie Boys. www.cassius.fm
MUMBAI SCIENCE
+
At only 24, the duo already has a decade worth of creative experimenting behind them. However, it was only last year that their musical passion culminated into the indie electro vibes of Mumbai Science, creating a sound that melts contemporary electro-synths with a vintage techno feel. In 2010 they signed to Lektroluv Records, releasing four original EP’s. Club hits like ‘Ancova’ and ‘Gold’ got picked up rapidly by artists from around the globe (2manydj’s, Crookers, Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Tiga...), putting Mumbai Science on the world’s EDM radar. In the meantime they also did remixes for Goose, MixHell, Dr Gonzo and Alex Gopher. Mark our words, these guys are gonna be big! www.facebook.com/Mumbaiscience
DROP THE LIME
New York native Luca Venezia, aka Drop The Lime (Trouble & Bass), was brought up on a staple diet of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison and Richie Valens, and learned to sing and play guitar from a young age. Like every kid, he wanted to be a rock star. Fast-forward a few years and a love affair with club music – specifically the UKcentric sounds of drum’n’bass, jungle and 2step garage – soon began, solidified by a short move to Berlin and an immersion in house, techno and the never-ending warehouse parties the city is famed
for. But the tattooed, Brylcreemed Venezia never lost his love for the sounds he grew up with, and he showcased that perfectly with his second album ‘Enter The Night’, featuring his big hit ‘Hot As Hell’. Drop The Lime is spearheading a new sound. Electrobilly? Rockabass? One thing’s for sure – we’ll be dancing to it. www.dropthelime.com
TOTALLY ENORMOUS EXTINCT DINOSAURS live
Originally hailing from the Greco-Roman stable, TEED has released three EPs with the Berlin and London party-starters. They are all superbly executed cross-sections of electronic mayhem. Check out ‘Garden’ and ‘Household Goods’, that have propelled TEED into the spotlight, as one of dance music’s brightest new talents. His remixes of artists as diverse as Fenech-Soler and Professor Green have helped turn the wheels even faster. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs swings between overt musicality and scarily on-point dance floor intuition. There’s a sense of playfulness, sleight of touch and FUN that seems missing from many of his contemporaries. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs has now signed to Polydor, with his debut album to follow in September. facebook.com/totallyenormousextinctdinosaurs
MADEON
Hailing from Nantes in France, recently turned 17 (!) year old Madeon came to the attention of the world with his unique blend of pop/house/ electro in his “Shuriken” and “For You” tracks, as well as his amazing remix of Pendulum’s “The Island”, which won a remix competition set up by Pendulum and Warner Records. His most recent remixes on the Yelle “Que Veux Tu” and Deadmau5 “Raise Your Weapon” singles have been a huge success with support from the likes of Martin Solveig, Alan Braxe, Skrillex, Pete Tong... When Madeon posted his Pop Culture Mashup on Youtube, it immediately got over 3 million views in 3 weeks! We already can’t wait for his debut EP to be released later this year! www.facebook.com/itsmadeon
BLUE ROOM Two of the new kids on the I❤TECHNO block this year are called Mumbai Science – quite possibly Dr. Lektroluv’s biggest discovery to date. The continued support from both their label boss and artists like Boys Noize, Erol Alkan and 2ManyDJs has put Maarten Elen and Jonas Kiesekoms clearly in the spotlight. Now, the two Belgian producers are ready to take over the world – ‘starting with I❤TECHNO!’ Did you use to visit I❤TECHNO as a rave kid? JONAS: ‘Every year! No, wait. I wanted to come as soon as 2003 – the year I fell in love with Stanny Franssen’s I❤TECHNO Anthem – but I only got there for the first time in 2006. Like Justice and Boys Noize. (Laughs) I remember it being much bigger than I had imagined. I knew it was a big of course but I didn’t count on having to walk that much. Mind you, I had a terrific time and I enjoyed coming back every year.’ So what would be your most memorable I❤TECHNO set ever? JONAS: ‘I would have to say MSTRKRFT in 2007. They closed the blue room that night and basically kept me on my feet until six in the morning. It was such an amazing set – I didn’t want it to stop.’ You’ve already toured the globe by now: is there any other festival in the world you can compare I❤TECHNO to? JONAS: ‘No. And I’m not just saying that to kiss ass. The unique thing about I❤TECHNO is not just its size but also the fact that it’s so eclectic. The only other place we’ve been to that somewhat has the same vibe and diverse line-up is Ultra in Miami – but that’s outdoor. Don’t get me wrong: I like playing outdoor festivals but in the end electronic music still works best indoor – with the right sound system and the right lighting. And when it comes to indoor festivals, I❤TECHNO clearly has no competition to speak of.’ This past summer you’ve gotten even more support from international DJs than the year before. Whose support did you get most excited about? JONAS: ‘Tiga’s – because he gave us the best compliment of the summer. A while ago we made an edit of his Burning Down track and sent it to him. Then someone told us he played it at Dour so when we caught up with him a couple of weeks later I asked him about it and he said he hated the edit. Man, I could literally feel my heart stop beating. Then he thanked us because he ended up playing it a party – the first time in years he played that song – and the crowd went wild. He said he didn’t get it at first but then he realized we
+
had found a way to make the song relevant again. All of a sudden my heart was beating twice as fast.’ (Laughs) Got any more edits or remixes coming up? JONAS: ‘We recently did two remixes – one for Alex Gopher and one for Crookers’ Dr. Gonzo project – and now we’re in the studio working on our new EP. Hopefully, it’ll hit stores ahead of I❤TECHNO. We aim to finish four new tracks and maybe also include some remixes though we’re not sure about those yet. We feel it’s more important to focus on the new songs and to let people hear what excites us these days. So far, Mumbai Science has mainly been about making banger tracks while we also incorporate deeper techno sounds into our DJ sets. The new EP will reflect that. Plus: we’ve gotten really inspired these last couple of months so we just had to go back in the studio.’ How do you two get inspired? JONAS: ‘By playing and dancing. When we’re playing, we often feel there’s a song missing in our record collection – a song that really fits the mood of the moment and would take the audience too an even, well, higher state of consciousness. Only trouble is: that song doesn’t exist or we haven’t found it yet. So we either have to look harder or simply make it ourselves. (Laughs) And as far as dancing goes, we’re not superstar DJs haunted by paparazzi yet so you can still catch us dancing at parties whenever we get the chance. Trust me: excellent way to get inspired.’ One last thing, what’s with the whole ‘hurb’ campaign? JONAS: ‘Hurb is the word, bro! It’s like the next level of cool. Per example, when we play at a massive party – that’s hurb! Basically, it’s a word we came up with – together with the guys from Sound of Stereo. We even had stickers made for it. They’re all over Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Colorado and Leuven.’ We actually looked it up online and according to UrbanDictionary.com ‘hurb’ means loser. JONAS: (Shocked) ‘What?! This changes everything of course. I will have to call a meeting with the hurb committee to address this issue. Oh, but wait: you mean ‘hurb’? Okay, see, you’ve got it all wrong. It’s spelled ‘#hurb’ – hashtag included. This is 2011, dude! We only speak in tweets.’

LEESA
So far, 2011 has treated Leesa well. She released her second EP Au Revoir Mon Coeur on the Belgian label Atmosphere Records, got featured in Belgium’s number one fashion magazine Weekend Knack and was one of six female producers asked to be part of Bitch – the one-off all-female version of Studio Brussel’s dance show Switch. Oh, and in case you’re wondering: the other five producers were Ellen Allien, Monica Electronica, Harmony, Foxy Lady ft. Mc Elvee and Raving George, who is also playing at this year’s I❤TECHNO. Now who said this is a man’s world? www.leesa.be
POLYDOR
Polydor got his first big break when he was asked to become a monthly resident at the legendary Dirty Dancing club in Brussels – as part of the DJ duo Cook-e & Matik. In recent months, he also started to make a (serious) name for himself with solo releases on the Belgium label Midnight Munchies. In fact, Fatboy Slim called Polydor’s recent EP You Better ‘mental’ and both Tony Senghore and Jaimie Fanatic made an excellent remix for it. Expect to hear a lot more great things coming out of this guy’s studio in the near future. www.myspace.com/polydormusic
BONGO
What started out as a funky history lesson is gradually turning into an even funkier look at the current state of Belgian nightlife: this fall, Red Bull Elektropedia is back with a new website and – as always – its own room at I❤TECHNO. When Red Bull Elektropedia was launched in the summer of 2009, its main focus was on the history of Belgian clubs, parties and electronic music in all its guises – from Telex, Front 242 and Boccaccio to Bonzai, I❤TECHNO and 2ManyDJs. While that is still the case today, the multimedia platform is completing a new website to further underline the significant role Belgium still plays in the international electronic music scene. Red Bull Elektropedia’s new website will feature both legendary and fresh DJ sets; breaking news items and in-depth coverage from expert music journalists and leading nightlife websites; a heavy dose of quality shows from Red Bull Music Academy Radio (including the brand new webcast Inside Out – The Belgian Edition); monthly video features on some of the key players in the scene; and let’s not forget about the upgrade the Red Bull Elektropedia Awards are getting – not just focusing on lifetime achievements anymore but also rewarding the class of 2011. Curious? Go to www.redbullelektropedia.be and/or drop by the Red Bull Elektropedia Room at I❤TECHNO – with these three upcoming Belgian producers ready to show you what they’re made of.
Being influenced by ethnic music styles, Bongo stands out with his brazillian percussion to uplifting house music, african steel drums to swinging techhouse and italian trumpet riffs to stunning afrostabs. Bongo’s first EP immediately got picked up by the infamous “Sweat it out” label (Yolanda Be Cool, Act Yo Age, Ajax, Solo, Vhyce,...) and has been released on the well known “Club Sweat” compilation in april 2011. His remixes have been been blogged across the web and got airplayed on Annie Mac’s BBC1 radioshow. As a result of his first EP he gained support from the likes of “Yolanda be cool, Solo, Round Table Knights, Mercury, Mowgli, Renaissance Man and many more...”. His second EP will once again see daylight on Sweat it Out by the end of 2011. To say the least, Bongo is redefining african-latin music in an art-nouveau style with his productions, remixes and sets. www.facebook.com/bongomusic 27
