Free, Valuable Career Advice is available at Coweta Public Libraries

College may be not for everybody but a Career is (and we can help) …

There are plenty of opinions these days on the cost of an education versus what the degree will do for your earning potential in our competitive world.

A lot of folks say that “college is not for everyone” and I tend to agree as there are a lot of important, fulfilling jobs that do not require the four-year dance. Therefore, college may not be for everyone, but a career is. Everyone should have the opportunity to earn for themselves, hopefully doing something they like and that contributes to the world around them.

Some of us were lucky to fall into a great career while others had to try on a job like some do shoes. Every year, we are guaranteed through the graduation process that there will be a new batch of degreetoting prospects looking for the perfect opening. With all the variables that go into a potential job fit, it is as important to be armed with good information as it is a good resume. We can help!

On our very own website, www.cowetapubliclibrary.org, you will find a tab entitled Digital Library. Once you click on it, you will be taken to a very attractive list of databases that are free because you are using the library’s site (what a deal!). For brevity’s sake, I will name a couple here and give a brief description but please take the time to peruse as many of the sites as you can.

GA Degrees Pay is a cool site for understanding current degree attainment for professions and salaries involved, along with giving details on all 26 public colleges and universities.

Job and Career Accelerator is exactly what it sounds like, the site assists with resumes, interviewing, work skills improvement, and preparation for work related examinations. It also offers expert advice and tips.

Many library patrons are already aware of the super site, GALILEO, which is Georgia’s virtual library, but I want to highlight one database in particular. O*Net Online features an interest profiler for job/career researchers and is run by the Employment and Training Administration of the US Department of Labor. They also have special matching criteria for veterans who are job hunting.

The Georgia Career Info Center site provides current and accurate occupational information to help young people and adults make informed career choices.

Finally, anyone investigating jobs and careers should visit Learning Express Library. This site offers more than 800 job-related tutorials, practice exams, and eBooks. These items not only assist with basic skills but go into job preparation and advancement.

While I have listed mostly electronic devices, please know that we also buy the most in demand print books on jobs and careers too and are always happy to order a particular item for you if asked.

On a different book note, I will mention a couple of fiction titles I have recently enjoyed and happily recommend to you. “The Sanctuary” by Katherine Engberg is a Danish police series that will have you burning the midnight oil to finish. I have really enjoyed the Shana Merchant series by Tessa Wegert; give it a try if you like characters who overcome and seaside locales. Finally, “The Villa” is a provocative gothic suspense novel centered in an Italian villa… break out the vino and read!

March, the highlights for the month are Daylight Saving Time begins and St. Patrick’s Day.

The last month and a half have been an amazing spiritual experience that I cannot put into words. This happens most often and is followed by a book being placed in my path that puts my amazing experiences into the proper perspective. This then becomes my Book of the Month. I will discuss this later in the column.

I recently re-discovered the amazing National Geographic. They have amazing true stories with great pictures as well. They cover everything from plants to insects, animals to sea life and all forms of the human being that exist all over the globe and outer space. Just one magazine can convince you that God does indeed exist. This amazing magazine started in 1866 I believe and it is one of the

most underrated magazines for what it does.

They send talented people to remote places all over the world, as well as to the bottom of the ocean and the tops of the highest mountains. They show how we are all truly connected to all of life and to each other everywhere.

My old issues of National Geographic magazines shall keep me entertained to the end of my days as I intend to read every story in every magazine I have and I might even buy more someday.

I believe my re-discovery of these magazines and my higher levels of spiritual growth are truly connected, as both give me a greater awareness of God. This is a spiritual awareness of God as opposed to an intellectual one.

When we seek intelligence and understanding we are truly in ego as God is not found in the head but in the spirit. This brings me to my Book of the Month. It is titled “Everything Belongs, The Gift of Contemplative Prayers” by Richard Rohr, a Franciscan priest. This book was sent to me from one of my kindred spirits following a month and a half of surreal spiritual experiences that I had no words to express. This book put my spiritual experiences into proper perspective.

Everything Belongs is in so many ways our total Godexperience as in everything belongs in our spiritual and religious life experience. All of what and what we are, the good, the bad, and the ugly are all part of my spiritual experience. Everything counts, nothing is left out of our spiritual experience.

To find God we are to step away from defining God in or through our intellectual mind. I encourage my readers to experience this book for themselves. Through a spiritual understanding that is building a solid foundation of faith, we come to know we are connected to Divine Spirit, to each other and to all of life in its many forms.

Until next time, Peace, love and respect Mr. Personality n

Screening for Colorectal Cancer is Critical, Especially for People at High Risk

March is national colorectal cancer awareness month, and doctors at Piedmont Newnan Hospital hope to educate people in the community about the importance of regular colorectal cancer screenings, especially for individuals at high risk.

“Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the U.S.,” Ibrahim Adamu, M.D., general and colorectal surgeon at Piedmont Newnan, said. “A colonoscopy is the best screening test available for colorectal cancer, and many of these cancers can be prevented through regular screenings.”

Most people should get their first colon cancer screening, a colonoscopy, at age 45. The American Cancer Society updated its screening guidelines in May 2018, lowering the recommended screening age from 50 to 45.

“African American men and women are considered high risk for this type of cancer, with a 20 percent higher rate of developing colon cancer, and a 45 percent higher mortality rate,” Dr. Adamu said.

In 2016, there were an estimated 17,000 new colon and rectal cancer diagnoses in African American men and women. Yet, the disease is preventable with proper screenings. Colonoscopy screenings are the number one way to detect disease or find polyps before they become cancerous.

“Some people may not experience any symptoms at all, but symptoms to look for are a change in bowel habits, unintentional weight loss and loss of appetite,” said Adamu. A colonoscopy is a procedure that allows for examination of the inside of the colon, helping doctors to identify precancerous polyps, which are abnormal growths in the colon or rectum. Any polyps or abnormal tissues found during a colonoscopy can be removed and sent to a laboratory for testing.

“Early stages of colorectal cancer usually present no symptoms,” Dr. Adamu said. “This is why screening is crucial because when found early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable.”

Both men and women should have a colonoscopy starting at age 45, however, people at an increased risk may start earlier. It is recommended to get tested every 10 years after that, unless there is a higher risk of colon cancer or someone has previously had cancer.

“Anyone with an immediate family member with a history of colon cancer, such as a parent or sibling, should be tested 10 years earlier than the recommended age of 45,” said Adamu. “Anyone with a genetic disposition or genetic disease should also be tested earlier.”

Risk factors for colorectal cancer include personal or family history of colorectal polyps or cancer, history of inflammatory bowel disease, racial and ethnic background, obesity, and smoking.

First Friday Hero Program Re-Launches

Honoring local first responders who go above and beyond the call of duty

In March, Piedmont Newnan Hospital will re-launch its First Friday Hero program, and honor local first responders who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

Piedmont Newnan created the First Friday Hero program in April 2019, but took a pause at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, when the hospital and community were stretched on resources.

“We are excited to restart this program and recognize those in our community that make a positive difference in every life they touch,” said Vicki Kaiser, COO at Piedmont Newnan. “It is heartwarming to read all the nominations we receive and learn about how our first responders go above and beyond to help those in our local communities get the help they need.”

The First Friday Hero program is designed to recognize first responders on a monthly basis who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Their line of work is often a thankless job and Piedmont Newnan wants to make the community aware of our local heroes and all they do to make Coweta County and our surrounding communities a better and safer place.

The Featured Joint

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …

Japaneck Frank 2.0

It is always a pleasure when one of your “joints” just knocks it out of the park. Like a scrawny little kid who becomes Mr. Athlete, welcome to Japaneck Frank 2.0.

Frank started out in a small food trailer. He focused on Hibachi dishes that included fried rice and vegetables, with a selection of steak, chicken, salmon or any combination you wanted. We always said he had some of the best sauces we’ve ever had, all homemade. He became so popular he built a bigger trailer.

And now, well he still serves all of the above, but let’s add sushi, bento boxes, fried rice bowls, mushroom soup (awesome), gyoza (to die for dumplings) and well, much more.

Let’s go back to the sushi for a second. He has everyone you would want plus some pretty amazing “special rolls.” Like the 5 in 1 Roll. That would be tuna, salmon, red snapper and yellowtail deep fried w/ eel sauce, spicy mayo, honey wasabi, sriracha sauce topped w/scallions & masago. Like we said, “special.”

Frank has given up his wheels and moved into a brick and mortar spot located inside Senoia Coffee House’s “Mess Hall.” Just enter the coffee house and go toward the back. But if you need a catering job, he will always fire up the trailer for you.

David is the manager and teaches music at Musicology in Newnan. He is also lead guitarist for the Kris Youmans Band and lends his talents to other groups and individuals needing exceptional guitar work. His skill and versatility in multiple music genres is recognized by all who know

We talked to David about music, influences, family, and career. Music seemed to be ever present for David as a young kid. His father is a musician/guitarist and the bands were frequently at their house. In 2005, he graduated from AIM-Atlanta Institute of Music. We asked if teaching was the main goal after graduating.

“I just needed music to be my career. I was lucky enough to get a call from Doug Kees three months after graduation. Teaching isn’t all I do, but it’s definitely the foundation.”

(Around the Newnan Courthouse)

Pickin On The Square starts around 10 a.m. and goes until 2 p.m. and is for all ages and levels of play. Join in the fun by singing along or bring your acoustic instrument. Lots of networking for musicians going on during the performances.

His influences cover a wide range of music.

“Besides my father’s influences, Nirvana and Stevie Ray Vaughan opened me up to the world of the 90s in Atlanta-rock & blues.

“One of the highlights so far as a musician would be when the band won the Georgia Country Awards Traditional Artist. We were also chosen as one of eight bands representing Georgia through Georgia Public Broadcasting in advance of Ken Burn’s documentary ‘Country Music.’ The band was voted Best of Coweta in 2020, 2021.”

David says the biggest reward with music has been the blessing of leading worship with his kids - this is what it’s all about and family is what is most important to him.

He says, “Imma keep playin’ till I can’t play anymore!”

And he has some advice for young musicians just starting out.

“Don’t set your sights on just one thing, develop as many industry skills as you can and be open to all industry opportunities”

How Do Books Help?

The more words a child hears, the larger the child’s vocabulary and the larger the child’s vocabulary, the more likely the child will be a proficient reader. However, in order to read with a child, books must be in the home.

Great Scot! Coweta Prepares to Welcome Students from Abroad

This July, Scotland’s Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra (AFO) will return to the United States for the first time since the COVID pandemic. Their first tour stop is Newnan, and the five dozen young musicians will have the opportunity to stay in local homes, learn about American culture, and perform at the Wadsworth Auditorium. The trip is an extension of the international sister-city relationship between Newnan and the city of Ayr (and likewise, sister-county relationship between Coweta and South Ayrshire) forged in the 1990s.

Coweta’s heritage has long been linked to Scotland. Chief William McIntosh, Jr., an admittedly controversial figure in history whose father was Scottish and mother was Creek, played a huge role in the formation of Coweta. Scottish-American industrialist Andrew Carnegie built Carnegie libraries both in Newnan and Ayr, and throughout the 1700s and 1800s, a number of Scottish families settled in Georgia.

Today, Scottish heritage is celebrated throughout the county. Each year in January, Larisa Scott, Executive Director of the McRitchie-Hollis Museum, and her husband, Michael Scott, facilitate the Newnan Burns Weekend which celebrates famed poet Robert Burns who was born in Ayr. Periodically, representatives from Newnan, which in the past have included Bette Hickman, Phyllis Graham, Cynthia Bennett, and Mayor Keith Brady, have visited Ayr as an expression of the continued commitment to the sister-city, sister-county relationship.

At present, the AFO Steering Committee, which is made up of city and county employees, Explore Newnan-Coweta, members of the Newnan Cultural Arts Commission, and other local citizens is diligently planning the multi-day itinerary.

“I’m so glad to be back surrounded with so much energy to make this event first class in every way!” says Co-chair Bette Hickman

who recently returned from an extended stay abroad. The activities planned include a hoedown barbeque, pool party, and a much-anticipated concert.

“I just think that the energy these young people have - because they’ve spent a lot of time on their craft - is reflected in the music. It makes you want to dance and move!” says Co-chair Phyllis Graham who also notes the importance of the arts when it comes to healing and connection. “It’s an opportunity for the community to come together for something that’s positive, for celebrating the gifts that we’re given!”

Families interested in hosting the foreign students can apply on the City of Newnan website. A formal background check is required. For more information, contact the City of Newnan at 770.254.2358.

Five Common Contingencies in Real Estate

As a Realtor, we deal with contingencies in contracts every day. As a consumer, you may or may not be aware of these contingencies. Contingencies are provisions that must be met for the property transaction to be completed or the buyer is entitled to terminate the contract and receive their earnest money back. They are critical in our contracts and in protecting our clients.

The most well-known contingency is the home inspection contingency. This gives the buyer the right to have the property that they are purchasing professionally inspected and request repairs and/or a credit from the seller by a certain date. The home inspection is typically completed during the due diligence period of a purchase and sale agreement.

Another popular contingency is the appraisal contingency. This allows the buyer time to have the property appraised by a neutral third party, typically the buyer’s mortgage lender’s appraiser. If the appraisal comes back lower than the sales price or with required repairs, the buyer may negotiate with the seller to handle such requests during the appraisal contingency.

The financial contingency protects the buyer should they not be approved to obtain a mortgage. An example of this would be the buyer losing their job during the financial contingency. The buyer would be protected and would receive their earnest money back in this situation.

Perhaps the most important but least talked about contingency is the title contingency. You cannot sell a property without clear or good title. There is a pre-written language in our Georgia Association of Realtors (GAR) forms that allows the buyer to examine title and terminate the contract, without penalty, should there be any issues. Most sellers will try to resolve any issues with title to push the transaction through. However, this is not always possible. An example of this would be a property owner, recently divorced, that has unpaid spouse support or alimony to their former spouse. I have seen this hold up contracts before when it cannot be resolved.

A home purchase is the largest financial investment most people make. When purchasing real estate, it is essential that you have a well thought out plan, with contingencies in a contract, to protect you. Many issues can be discovered throughout the course of a transaction, and you need to protect yourself. I highly recommend working with an experienced Realtor to do so.

The Film Fix … Streaming Edition

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

In Theaters:

Cocaine Bear (now playing) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – In the 1980s, a cache of cocaine is dumped from a crashing plane in the Tennessee/Georgia mountains. When a black bear discovers and ingests large amounts of the powdery, white substance, she goes on a rampage.

This tongue-in-cheek comedy, loosely based on a true story, is equal parts funny and gory. Destined to be a cult classic, director Elizabeth Banks infuses her “Jaws” parody with ample amounts of 80s nostalgia. The movie features a stellar cast featuring a humorous turn by Alden Ehrenreich, an adorable and funny pint-sized, foulmouthed Christian Convery, and the last performance by the late Ray Liotta.

Creed III (March 3) – l NO Fix Rating 5/10 – In the third, and, hopefully, final, Creed film, Michael B. Jordan never lets you forget that he’s a movie star--from his expensive designer clothing, his fabulous LA mansion, to his perfect Rolls-Royce. In this slick production, Jordan looks rich from head to toe, even when his character is taking a beating in the ring.

That wealthy, polished persona belies the rough and ready one that handsomely launched the “Rocky” spin-off “Creed” in 2015. By contrast, “Creed III” lacks the raw edge and the street cred that the 2015 film captured perfectly. This entry is a marginal improvement over the cartoonish “Creed II,” but it’s a wasted opportunity for Jordan, who also makes his directorial debut.

When interviewed about this project, Sylvester Stallone said, “I like my heroes getting beat up, but I just don’t want them going into that dark space. I just feel people have enough darkness.” In exploring Creed’s relationship with an emotionally damaged childhood friend, arguably, “Creed III” might not be dark enough.

Even though Stallone does not appear in this film, the narrative he originally wrote in 1976 is partially recycled in “Creed III.” The story has Adonis “Donnie” Creed retiring after a rematch with Ricky Conlan (Tony Bellew). As a second career, Creed turns to promotion and management.

One afternoon, he’s visited by an old friend Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors), who has recently been released from a long stint in prison. Anderson, whose age hovers around 40, was once a golden glove champ. He desperately wants Creed to give him a shot at the title. Can Creed overcome the demons of his past and make things right with his friend? Naturally, this is gonna end up in the ring.

“Creed III” is the kind of pulpy entertainment associated with lesser installments in the prolific boxing movie franchise. But something is off, as the core theme is confused, with an irresponsible message promoting that all problems can be settled with your fists. An attempt to grapple with this dilemma is jettisoned in a false moment when Creed’s thoughtful wife (Tessa Thompson) embraces the violent solution with little explanation.

Majors, who just last month was the best thing about the MCU’s “Quantumania,” once again proves that he’s the real deal. If only this script would have allowed him to be genuinely as frightening as he could be. But what’s surprising is that despite his questionable motives, I found myself rooting for his character as the final battle with Creed hits the ring.

Streaming Selects:

Perry Mason (Season 2 starts on March 6) – The origin story for the famous 1950s-era television lawyer continues with its second season. Matthew Rhys plays the title character, a private investigator and, eventually, a lawyer, in 1930s Los Angeles. The noir drama was well-received when it launched, but nearly three years have passed since season one, meaning that viewers may have to do some heavy lifting and rewatch the first eight episodes to reacquaint themselves with the players and their place in the world.

Agent Elvis (season 1, March 17, 2023) – In this animated adventure, Matthew McConaughey gives voice to a fantastical version of the famous Memphis singer. In “Agent Elvis,” the rock star becomes a secret agent who, according to the Netflix synopsis, “trades in his jumpsuit for a jetpack” and joins forces with a secret government program. The musician-turned-spy reportedly battles “dark forces that threaten the country.” The trailer looks like adultskewing fun, and McConaughey’s voice work sounds less like Elvis and more like, well, McConaughey, which is “alright, alright, alright.”

Ted Lasso (March 15) – “If seeing is believing, I believe we’ve been seen,” Ted (Jason Sudeikis) quips, standing beside his right arm Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt). The two seasoned pros inspect the team lockers, each adorned with a custom version of his trademark motivational term, “Believe.” Believing in Lasso, Apple’s streaming platform hopes that the return of its marquee show will help viewers discover all the quality programming it has been churning out.

After checking out “Ted Lasso,” you can also give their climate change series “Extrapolations” a look starting on March 17. And at the end of the month, you can watch the movie “Tetris,” which is a narrative about the origin of the famous video game; hint, it was smuggled out of the Soviet Union.

Theatrical Teasers:

Scream VI (March 10) – The latest installment in the long-running self-aware horror franchise takes Ghostface to New York City.

Luther: The Fallen Sun (March 10) – The hit British television series gets a theatrical spin-off. Disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) is forced to escape prison to capture a serial killer in London.

The Mandalorian (season 2, episode 1, March 1) – Disney’s most popular space opera series returns after more than a two-year hiatus. Meanwhile, the crown of the Star Wars universe’s best series was taken by last year’s transcendent “Andor.” In the season three “Mandalorian” trailer, Mando (Pedro Pascal) decides to return to Mandalore to seek forgiveness. Still, there’s darkness threatening the galaxy, and he’s got the child, Grogu, to protect. Of course, Grogu might not need protection as its powers continue to grow.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods (March 17) – Shazam (Zachary Levi) returns to do battle with a new group of super-powered villains led by Hespera (Helen Mirren) in the latest DC comics adaptation.

65 (March 17) – Adam Driver plays an astronaut who crashes on a strange planet where he discovers that the life there might not be very hospitable.

John Wick: Chapter 4 (March 24) – Keanu Reeves is back in fine form as the super-killer title character. This time, he’s offered

a chance at freedom from the dangerous organization, The High Table.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (March 31) – This reboot of the 2000 adaptation of the popular role-playing game stars Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. While the action looks fast and furious, the comic vibe might make the movie even more entertaining.

Daisy Jones & The Six (season 1, March 3, 2023) – l Fix Rating 6/10 – Adapted from the bestseller by Taylor Jenkins Reid, “Daisy Jones & The Six” is arguably an improvement over the tedious source material. The book was composed of a laborious series of documentary-style interviews, partially recreated in this series. But the material comes alive as the action is vividly recreated in the cinematic form. The story follows the rise of a 1970s rock band. Elvis’ granddaughter Riley Keough plays the title character, a Stevie Nicks-inspired siren, who joins a Fleetwood Mac-style music group.
