Remembering my best Christmas Gifts ever! What is the best Christmas gift you have ever received? I remember two gifts from my childhood that stand out. The first was my Chatty Cathy doll. She could talk! (Fun Fact: The first talking doll was given to us by Thomas Edison way back in 1889.) Chatty Cathy was bigger than my other dolls. To a five-year-old girl, she made it so easy to pretend she was real. Even the doll that wet her own diaper could not hold a candle to my Chatty Cathy. She was the best gift ever! Until my second “best” gift. I think I was maybe 14 years old – way past the age of believing in Santa Claus. But that year, Santa made a surprise visit and delivered my very own record player with speakers that could disconnect. . As a teenager, I listened to my records over and over and sang every word to every song. My record player represented to me that I was growing up. I could play the music I wanted, when I wanted. Just like a grownup. As an adult, my most precious gifts very often came from my granddaddy. These were not expensive gifts. They were not practical, nor were they anything that I wanted. But each gift had a story behind why he bought it for me. The connection between me and the gift would never be clear until he got to the end of his story, and then it was crystal clear. No matter what the gift, I always knew that it was selected specifically for me. When my granddaddy saw the often-odd item, something about it reminded him of me. The best gifts in life are not those that cost the most. They are not the ones that are the “next best thing.” They are not the ones that are repeated on the television commercials or come up on your Facebook page right after you talked about it to

someone. That is still so very creepy when that happens. The best gifts are those that say the giver thought about you when choosing the gift. That is all we really want. To know that our loved one thought about us and wanted to give something that is meaningful. So, this holiday season I want to challenge you to give the unexpected. Instead of giving movie gift certificates, give a movie date with you. Instead of restaurant gift certificates, take them out to dinner. Instead of pajamas, have a pajama party. Give a gift that has a backstory, like my granddaddy did. And most important, give a gift that includes you. Your parents, your friends, your aging family members, your adult children and your grandchildren, really only want you for Christmas. You are the best gift you can give them: your time, your words, your attention. So many gifts are not remembered, but time with loved ones, those memories are cherished. Front Porch Stories It's the memories and sharing them Seattle, Washington is the only place that my husband John and I have both been to, but not at the same time. He traveled there a few times for business and I went with a friend to board a scrapbooking cruise to Alaska. At the time I was planning to go, John told me to be sure to visit Pike Place Market. He and I have talked about the market from time to time and we agree that we need to go there together and also take that Alaskan cruise.

There aren’t many pictures from that day. Some were lost in a fire while others were lost while still on the rolls of film. Of course, these days there are not many brides who have to worry about rolls of film being lost or damaged, and that is something to be grateful for. John traveled all over the world for business in the years before he retired. For the exception of local trips, I accompanied him only to Paris, France because his assignments were typically short. We added a week or so in France, but he wasn’t able to extend his time very often. He wanted me to go to Australia every time he was scheduled to go, but I’d need a whole month for a trip like that. Australia isn’t on my bucket list, but Paris was one of my top destinations and that particular trip happened to be in the spring, which made it perfect in every way. In our 47 years, our number increased to eleven, which includes our daughter and her family as well as our son and his. Sadly, our overall family has decreased by his sister, our parents, a step parent, my oldest sister and two brother in laws. We have seen the most devastating times as a grandchild was diagnosed with cancer, but we have also seen incredible blessings as she is now in remission. I was 17 and he was 22 when we spoke our vows. Someone once said we were “lucky” to have been married so long. I explained it’s not luck. We gave our marriage to God on day one. We asked Him to guide us in everything, especially when we didn’t seek Him. If we can attribute one thing to such a lifetime of togetherness, it’s this: invite God in. It’s never too late. We just celebrated our 47th wedding anniversary, and we will be waiting another couple of years before we take that journey. Maybe on our 50th, but as long as we get there, it doesn’t really matter when. Once you’ve been married over four decades, the years start blending together. How many times were we in the Bahamas? We don’t know. What year did we go to Maine? Cancun? St. Maarten? No idea. We just know we went, and the best part is that we share those great memories together. We were married on Thanksgiving Day in 1976. My mom teased me on my wedding day, saying that’s two Thanksgivings she had to miss since I was also born on Thanksgiving Day. I don’t recall much about my wedding day except that my soon-to-be husband’s mom and my mom had to do a rapid alteration of my wedding dress. I also remember his uncles jokingly telling me not to worry, my groom would be along as soon as the football games were over. And I can never, ever forget seeing him standing at the altar waiting for me to walk down the aisle.

A Festive Raspberry Dessert for Christmas

Remember those elegant tins of hard candies with the filled centers that you used to see every Christmas? They can still be found every now and then, but when I was growing up, those candies were an essential part of Christmas celebrations. The berry-flavored candies weren’t something I’d thought about too often until I decided to make this raspberry dessert for Christmas, and boy, did it bring back some tasty memories! This recipe hails from a vintage booklet I bought on eBay years ago titled Holiday Treats and Elegant Buffet Dishes, and it’s a collection of recipes that originated in the tearoom at Halle Brothers Co., a department store that operated in Cleveland, Ohio, until 1982.

I love raspberry-flavored treats, and a pretty red filling seems perfect for Christmas desserts, so once I discovered that this recipe calls for raspberry pie filling—and that said pie filling can be purchased at Walmart—I was all in.

The taste was all I hoped it would be. It has a cookie-type base and a tart raspberry filling, but the decadent topping is clearly what made shoppers of yesteryear absolutely love this treat! A 3-inch square slice makes a rich dessert, and a smaller-sized bar (about 1 x 3 inches) would make a fine addition to a dessert tray. Merry Christmas!

Halle’s Tearoom Raspberry Squares Dough: o 3 cups flour o 1 teaspoon salt o 1 tablespoon baking powder o 1/2 cup sugar o 1 cup cold margarine (I used butter) o 3 egg yolks o 1/2 cup milk o 1 teaspoon vanilla Filling: o 2 cups raspberry pie filling (I used Duncan Hines brand) Icing: o 1 cup butter, softened o 1 teaspoon salt o 1 cup marshmallow créme o 1/2 cup vegetable shortening o 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese o 1 (16-ounce) box powdered sugar Garnish: o 1 cup coconut

Combine flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and butter and blend well, just as you would a pie dough. (Following a tip I read in Southern Living years ago, I use a cheese grater and grate my cold butter before blending it into biscuits, scones, etc. It’s so much easier to get those “pea-sized” pieces that way.) In a small bowl, beat egg yolks, milk, and vanilla and add to dry ingredients, then combine all with a fork until well blended. Chill dough for one hour. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Roll out a little over half of the dough, rolling it quite thin. (I rolled mine between two pieces of wax paper, and the colder the dough, the better.) Place on a large (15.25 x 10.25-inch) greased cookie sheet. Spread with pie filling, almost to edges. Roll out the remainder of the dough very thin and place over the filling. Bake about 25 minutes or until light brown. Cool completely. For icing, whip all ingredients together using an electric mixer and, when pan of cookies is completely cool, spread on top. Sprinkle with coconut. Cut into squares of desired size. Note: Original recipe observes that “blueberry pie filling is equally delicious.”

The local real estate market in Coweta County has a lot to be thankful for this year. We may not think about it, but one of the most obvious reasons is our close proximity to the busiest airport in the world and the city of Atlanta. Another reason is that the fact that Interstate 85 runs through the middle of our county. Coweta has attracted many types of industry and businesses through the years but big names like Amazon and Goodyear are here now. The Coweta County Development Authority does a nice job of bringing in prospective businesses to our area. Personally, I am seeing more and more employees from large companies like Chick-fil-A , Coca-Cola and Delta purchase homes in Coweta as opposed to the northside of Atlanta. Having an affordable cost of living with attractive housing options helps us attract new people here. Having a good school system really helps as this is a very important factor for families with children when selecting where to live. We are lucky to have a good school system with nice private schools also available. Most of the people that live here in Coweta seem happy to be here and do not want to leave. Looking at the number of homes listed for sale, they are very scarce, and we have less than a two-month supply of homes available to purchase. Many sellers are staying in the county and moving locally. The number of buyers and the demand for housing outpaces the number of properties for sale. I have seen more buyers from outside of Georgia this year than any year I can remember. The individual cities and the county have done a good job providing attractive amenities. One example is the Newnan LINC or walking trail system. It is like our own version of Atlanta’s Beltline. With this rapid growth, good leadership and “smart growth” is essential. We are fortunate to have good leaders in place to protect our hometowns and grow with vision. You see many practices in planning, involving density and best uses for properties, by our local leadership. Coweta County is in a prime position to flourish in the next decades. Some of this is simply due to our location while much of it is due to planning, developing, and good leadership. Simply put, Coweta County is just a nice place to live. 4-H Cloverleaf Camp (June 24-28) – This camp is for 4th -6th graders and is held at Rock Eagle 4-H Center.

Agriculture & Natural Resources Backyard Meeting (January 9, 2024) – This program discusses “Perils and Pitfalls of Overused Plants” and will be taught by Bartow County Extension Agent, Paul Pugliese. Backyard meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month (January – November). West Georgia Equine Symposium (March 30, 2024) - This symposium is a partnership between the Troup, Coweta, Carroll and Haralson County Extension offices and will include topics that are helpful for new and experienced horse owners such as forages, nutrition, horse health and more.

4-H Senior Camp (July 1-5) – This camp is for 9th -12th graders and is also held at Wahsega 4-H Center. 4-H Senior Natural Resource Camp (July 1-5) – This camp is also held at Rock Eagle and exposes high school youth to various natural resource topics through hands-on learning. Youth interested in wildlife, fisheries, forestry, water, etc. are encouraged to apply. * Camp registration forms and payment information will be available on January 3rd at the Coweta County Extension Office.

Diabetes educators and even physicians turned to Piedmont’s virtual platforms which allowed for more connection than the alternative, with the added benefit of eliminating the hassles of long-distance travel. And with the potential of long commutes for the classes taken out of the picture, those participating in Piedmont’s Diabetes Education Program flourished. Not to mention the centralized workflow allowing patients access to more scheduling options than their local classroom has provided. And it was even easier for patients to maintain continuity when taking into account the fact that the online meeting platforms allowed for more opportunities to connect with not only those teaching the curriculum, but also their caregivers, streamlining their access to each part of the process. About 5,000 patients have received a three-session diabetes education program provided by Epic. About 80% of those who complete the classes see a substantial drop in their A1C. More than 15% drop a full percentage point, Dr. Jim Latimer, Piedmont’s chief medical informatics officer for ambulatory services, recently told USA Today about the program. “I’m thrilled that the program we’ve developed has been shown to be able to have an effect,” he said “We want to expand it further so that we can help more.”

Piedmont’s Virtual Diabetes Classes Improve Patients’ Blood Sugar Levels Taking a new virtual approach to educate diabetic patients, Piedmont is seeing significant progress in patient comprehension and health outcomes — with participants achieving healthier blood sugar levels. In fact, 80 percent of those who complete the classes see a substantial drop in their A1C. The average drop is two full percentage points. By utilizing and expanding its virtual platforms, Piedmont has reached people in a long-term, day-to-day sense, without needing to be in the same room.

The holiday season often is the busiest time for hospital emergency rooms. Last year at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, more than 10,500 patients sought treatment at the ER during the holiday season. Here’s how to avoid the emergency room this holiday season: 1. Know when a trip to the ER is really necessary. Most health issues that arise during the holidays are not medical emergencies.
