Regional Coordinator Kevin Stanfield (GEMA region 6) conducted the site assessments as a part of an offer from the agency to school systems statewide. Coweta County’s school safety plans have been developed through the years with GEMA guidance.

“It’s always good to have a new, and welltrained, perspective on our school safety and security measures,” said Horton. “I value our partnership with GEMA and local law enforcement, and their expertise as we seek to make our schools as safe as they can“Thebe.” purpose of the assessments is to provide schools with individualized guidance on things they can do to be safer environments,” said Coweta Schools Safety Director Ken Kesselring, who accompanied Stanfield on the site visits.

Stanfield took principals and system staff through walkthroughs of the entire school campus, following the 11-page site assessment guide. Safety is actually our bread and butter” at GEMA, said Stanfield, who also lives in Coweta County. “And in these sorts of assessment visits, we are really another set of eyes,” and the assessments can offer teachers and staff a new perspective on safety issues which need to be addressed or enhanced, he said.

Sundays.

Corby Carlin Winters, Marketing/Public Relations corby@wintersmedia.net

What are some of the big “crowd pleasers” you’ve noticed over the years?

Definitely the rides and the food. The Lumberjack and Lumberjill competitions. The Disney Princesses were a big hit last year as was the “living statue.” Both will be back again this year.

Kiwanis’ mission is to “Serve the Children of the World.” The Fair provides children and their families an opportunity to enjoy time together in a fun, entertaining, and wholesome environment while also providing us the opportunity to give back to the community through grants from the proceeds of the Fair.

Primetime Amusements does a great job of providing a wide variety of rides for all ages. As for attractions, we will have a petting zoo again after not having one for a couple of years due to COVID Lew-E’s Comedy Circus is new, as is Rock and Read, Mahayley’s Grave and Latin Dance and Music on both Sundays. And this year we will have lots of new activities for children on the lawn in front of the main stage. Dates and times for all entertainment and programming can be found on our website: cowetacountyfair.net

What do you enjoy the most during the fair?

I think Sundays are best. We are open Sundays from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Crowds are usually light. If Sunday doesn’t work for you, then the best times would be Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday where we have sponsors offering free entry which saves you $5 per person.

Check in at the Information Booth (otherwise known as the “Fruit Stand”). Or contact us through our Facebook Page.

No rain, moderate temperatures and a well behaved crowd.

Definitely the Mega Pass. It saves you up to $10 on Friday and Saturday and can save you time in line on other days. Mega Passes are on sale now through September 14th at cowetacountyfair.net or in person at Keith Ross Agency, Southtowne Motors, Coweta County Extension Office, and Arnall Grocery.

Anything else you want to add?

Why does the Kiwanis sponsor the fair?

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office, the various departments throughout the county and the numerous volunteers that support us each year. A lot of planning has gone into making this year’s Fair the most entertaining and exciting yet. We have managed to hold the cost down despite the rise in inflation and hope to see everyone out having a good time.

What is the best deal?

We will have a petting zoo again after not having one for a couple of years due to COVID. Lew-E’s Comedy Circus is new, as is Rock and Read, Mahayley’s Grave and Latin Dance and both And this year we will have of new for on the lawn in front of the main stage.

“We’re eager to take the feedback from this process and put it into practice,” said Horton.

Kesselring noted that GEMA plans have formed the foundation of Coweta Schools’ safety and security planning for 20 years. “Every year we have a checklist that we go through, twice a year, for school evaluations,” and separate local reviews with input from local law enforcement.

Schools Safety Assessment story

Principals were given the site assessment ahead of the visits so they could begin their own self-assessment “and that allowed them to have conversations with their teachers, their SROs and others in their school” before the visit, Kesselring said.

3. Walk your pet in a neighborhood common area, dog park, or other area where the visibility of the turfgrass is not as important.

A.

Most pets repeatedly visit the same general area, and over time small urine spots can become large dead spots. Minor damage will look like patches of dark green grass that are taller than other areas of the lawn, while more severe damage appears as dead patches 3 to 6 inches in diameter with dark green perimeters.

2. Water the area your pet uses. This can help minimize serious damage but may not completely stop a greening response in the turf.

For more information about turfgrass management, contact the Coweta County Extension office at 770254-2620 or email coweta.extension@uga.edu

Q. My dogs are damaging my turf. What can I do?

4. Maintain a healthy turf that can more easily recover from damage. Proper fertilization, mowing height and irrigation are very important for a healthy turf.

The University of Georgia College of Agricultural & Environmental Sciences is an equal opportunity, affirmative action organization. Special thanks to Purdue Extension and University of Illinois Extension turfgrass resources for contributions to this article.

Damage from animal urine can occur in any turfgrass species in any climate, but the most severe damage occurs when soil moisture is low, and the weather is hot and dry for an extended time. Sounds like a typical Georgia summer, right?

1. Keep your pet off the most visible parts of the lawn and/or train your pet to use a designated area away from the main lawn.

Sometimes this damage can be confused with lawn diseases like dollar spot and brown patch, but diseased turfgrass usually lacks the dark green perimeter around the dead spot. Instead, diseased turf will have a lighter green or yellow ring, called a halo, around the spot.

Pets can be tough on turfgrass, especially if your goal is to have a perfectly manicured lawn that resembles a golf course. However, even if your expectations are not that high, you may still want a lawn without dead spots appearing in highly visible areas.

5. During times of drought, water deeply and infrequently to maintain adequate soil moisture. Two inches of water once a week is much better than shallow watering (1/2”) 2-3 days per week, which encourages shallow root growth and weaker turf.

It is important to note that there are products available that claim to repel animals to keep them from urinating on particular areas, but these products have not been proven effective. Consult with your veterinarian about any products that claim to repel animals from certain areas or that claim to provide dietary modifications that help limit turf damage caused by animal urine.

Here are some tips to limit damage caused by pets to your lawn:

Little Grown Ups

The ten-year-old and her little sis just came in for a visit. She’s all decked out in her finery, too dressy to play outside. Just as I was lamenting a flittering childhood, she asked if she could watch T.V. “Of course,” I replied.Moments

I remember being “little” and too young to do things grownups get to do. I couldn’t wait to grow up, so I understand number two, three and four’s eagerness to be grown girls. The boys are still very much rough and tumble, and I love that. And I totally get it that these girls don’t want “kid” menus at the restaurant. I understand they are far too mature (in their minds) for kid cups. And even though I probably did the same, it’s hard to watch them rush their childhoods away.

One of our Littles will be turning 16 in just over two years. He is the most cautious one of the bunch, something I feel is a blessing from God to this grandma who can’t imagine any of these kids being out on the road. But by the same token, I was driving before I was 16, windows down, rock music up, hair flying in my face. They were my glory days and I wouldn’t have missed them for the world. It’s a rite of passage, and while I will be holding my breath for at least a year or two after he starts driving, he deserves to experience the same. I’ll have to be okay with that, but only when the time comes. I won’t borrow those worries of tomorrow.

She’s a grandLittle, third in the lineup of five, and she turned ten in February. She shadows number two, the already-eleven-year old and she towers over number four, who wants to be just like her.

I think today’s term is “adulting.” Of course, as a grown woman with grandkids, I’m expected to “adult.” And as hard as it was to be a teenager, this whole “adult” thing is definitely not for the weak. There are mortgages, car expenses, jobs and so many more things we must do to be responsible adults. And while we reap the benefits of being grown, it’s not always what it’s cracked up to be. I so wish the kids knew to cherish their childhoods while it lasts. There will be plenty of time for high heels, makeup and all the trimmings, actually decades of time. But childhood is barely 16 years.

She comes in with dangling earrings, a pretty dress and braids in her hair. She is stunning whether she is dressed up fancy or not, and surely she doesn’t know how those bright blue eyes, blonde hair and perfectly dainty features just melt our hearts.

Now a bit of advice about attending expos.  What typically happens is that you end up with a bag full of information which you have all the good faith in the world to read over, organize and file.  But instead, you don’t.  You stuff it up on some shelf somewhere for later or worse yet, after staring at it on your counter for a few weeks, you just chunk it.  So here is a tip.  Before you go to the expo, grab three folders or three manila envelopes.  On each folder or envelope, write: “Where Do I Want to Live”; the next one write: “How Am I Going to Pay for It”; and on the 3rd one write: “Who is Going to Take Care of Me.”

We will have professionals from healthcare, housing, finance, and senior law.  Whether you are “of a certain age” or you love someone who is, this is a great place to begin your search to gather information.

But how can you be prepared for something you have never faced?  You research, look for answers and talk to experts.  That could take a lot of time.  Or you could attend this Fall’s Healthy Aging Expo.  This Expo is a one-stop shop for everything you need to know about how to age well.

Whether you are prepared for what life has to throw you as you age or not, if you are lucky, you will get to age.  But if you are like me, I don’t just want to age.  I want to age well.  And your best bet to age well is to be prepared.

The book features a number of recipes once served in the tearoom of the Thalhimers store in Richmond, Virginia, and this rice pudding was said to be a favorite of both adults and children there.

But rice pudding sounded old-fashioned, and I was initially skeptical about making it. I realize that cooks of yesteryear had to get creative with their dishes, especially during World War II and rationing, but rice in a dessert? I tried it anyway, and as the Monkees used to sing, now I’m a believer.

Even with the ups and downs of supply chain issues over the past few years, we still have a ton of choices at the grocery store. Like rice. There’s white, brown, jasmine, basmati, instant, sticky, and every variety of flavored rice imaginable. My husband and I discovered we liked basmati rice a few years ago, and while any old rice is fine by us, we especially love the kind we get with our favorite Chinese takeout. Have you ever watched rice being planted? I’d never thought much about it until a friend sent me a link to a YouTube video about a town in Japan that is finding new life by growing green tea (I’m a fan) and rice. The video—titled “Revitalizing a Japanese Tea Town” if you care to look it up—opens with footage of a contraption that operates like a small tractor designed for the rice paddy. Through some marvel of mechanization, it drops perfectly spaced rice plants into the wet ground. I was as fascinated by the rice as the tea!

This simple treat was fast and easy to prepare, and I love that its ingredients are almost always on hand. I used vintage glass sherbet dishes to present individual servings, and tied with colorful ribbon, these can add a bit of panache to the table at Thanksgiving, Christmas, or anytime you want to treat your family to something special.

I keep several varieties of rice on hand, and in addition to eating rice as a side dish with savory foods, I’ve learned to view rice as the basis for a dessert. Early each fall, I start to think about cooking comfort foods. Something rich and creamy sounded good for dessert one evening, so I decided to try a rice pudding recipe I came across in a book about one of the old department stores I love to research.

Barron said the local sheriff’s department has previously contacted him when they were trying to track down a rental scam prospect.

“The most common forms of scams I see in my real estate business are rental scams involving deposits and earnest money and wire fraud,” Barron said.

• Ads for the property have grammatical and spelling errors or overuse capital letters.

Rental Scams

“People need to do their due diligence when looking at properties to lease or buy,” Barron said. “I would recommend using a trusted realtor to help avoid these types of scams.”

• The advertised price is much lower than the cost of similar properties.

The scam artist will change a letter in the closing attorney’s email address in hopes their target doesn’t notice and will wire the money to their account instead of the real estate closing attorney. With home purchases, the buyer could lose a significant amount of money.

The scams have even hit close to home. An agent at Lindsey’s Inc. Realtors recently had his fatherin-law’s residential property listed for sale. While looking online, the agent saw that someone had taken pictures of the house and posted that the

• Get rental terms in writing, including fees, rent and maintenance.

• Get a copy of the lease signed by the renter and the property owner or manager.

As housing costs continue to rise, home buying and rental scams have also been increasing. Consumers need to beware of scams so they won’t lose money or have their personal information end up in the wrong hands.

Ways to steer clear of Home Buying

• Rent a property they’re unable to see prior to signing the lease.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reports there has been a steady increase in losses reported by victims of real estate and rental scams in the last three years. In 2021, nearly 11,600 people nationwide reported losing more than $350 million due to these types of scams, a 64 percent increase from the previous year, according to a report from theJessFBI.

• Conduct a search on the owner, real estate management company and listing. If renters find the same ad listed under a different name, this is a clue it may be a scam.

Here are some additional tips for renters to protect themselves from scams:

The scammer was using the money payment application Zelle and asked prospective renters to put both a security deposit and first month’s rent down. He created urgency by telling people they had to put the money down as soon as possible or someone else would lease the property. The scam artist took $3,000 from one potential renter. Barron said the scam artist used Zelle because it is harder to trace.

“We see scam artists create email addresses and pose as the closing attorney asking for the earnest money or funds to purchase a home,” Barron said.

USA.gov recommends that renters should be suspicious if:

• Send money overseas for a rental.

Real estate closing attorneys, who typically hold earnest money as part of contracts, can call the home buyer or email them the correct wiring instructions, he said. However, home buyers still need to pay attention to details.

Rental scams occur when either a property owner or potential tenant misrepresents themselves, as well as when the terms and availability of a rental property are misrepresented, according to USA.gov.

Wire fraud is another common type of fraud that Barron has witnessed.

Barron recommends for home buyers to close with a trusted real estate attorney and have their realtor double check everything, including wiring instructions, before they send the money. The home buyer could also call the closing attorney before they send the wire to make sure the wiring instructions are correct. Wire fraud is very common, Barron said.

• The owner or agent requires the renter to sign the lease before they see the rental property. They might also charge the renter a fee to view the property or say they aren’t able to let the renter enter the home or apartment.

untrue.“The scam artist was cold calling prospects to rent the property,” Barron said. “He just happened to contact our agent’s friend, so she called our agent and made him aware of the scam.”

• Visit real estate websites to see if the desired rental property is listed in another city. A scammer could have copied the photo or description.

• Wire money as a deposit or payment for first and last month’s rent. This is the same as giving cash, so the renter can’t get a refund even if the offer was fraudulent.

The Braves received the official invitation from President Joe Biden on Sunday (Sept. 18) to stop by and celebrate the team’s title.

The Falcons, now 0-2 to start the 2022 NFL season, will be in Seattle on Sunday, Sept. 25, to face the Seahawks, 1-1.

Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. and will be televised by FOX.

For the season, the Braves rookie is batting .305 with 26 doubles, 18 home runs, 58 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 99 games.

The 2023 season will consist of a balanced schedule with 13 games each vs. teams in their respective divisions (instead of 19 like this season) and 46 interleague games (20 this year).

After Sunday’s 31-27 loss on the road to the defending champions Los Angeles Rams, the Atlanta Falcons will remain on the west coast through the week instead of making two crosscountry flights.

Brantley Gilbert meets with fans at the Sep tember 14 Small Town Throwdown Concert in Newnan.

The most common forms of scams I see in my real estate business are rental scams involving deposits, earnest money and wire fraud. I have had the local Sheriff’s Department contact me looking to track a rental scam prospect down.

“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity of this commu nity and our sponsors. We can’t thank Brantley Gilbert enough for bringing this concert to Newnan. This was a huge undertaking, and as we saw on Wednesday, he and the other performers pulled it off and made the 2,500 fans here incredibly happy with a fantastic concert,” said CCF Executive Director Kristin Webb.

“After the enormous success of last year’s concert with Alan Jackson, we were thrilled that we could again use the gift of music to entertain Cowetans while raising money for the Coweta Community Foun dation,” said Webb. She noted that sponsorship proceeds will “allow us to enhance our community’s quality of life by encouraging philanthropic interaction in Coweta County.”

The presenting sponsor of the concert was Pepsi.

One of our agents recently had his father-in-law’s residential property listed for sale. He was online and saw where someone took pictures of the house and posted that the home was available for lease, when in fact it was not. The scam artist was cold calling prospects to rent the property. He just happened to contact our agent’s friend, so she called our agent and made him aware of the scam. The scam artist was using the money payment application, “Zelle,” and asking the prospective renters to put both a security deposit and first month’s rent down. He created urgency by telling people they had to put the money down as soon as possible or someone else would lease the property. The scam artist took $3,000 from someone. He used the payment application Zelle because it is harder to trace.

The Foundation was able to raise money by selling spon sorships to businesses, and Webb said she was grateful for all of those who supported the concert by signing on as a sponsor. They included Title Sponsor, Southtowne Motors; Platinum Sponsor, DTH Expeditors Inc.; Gold Sponsors, Agrimerica Farm & Construction LLC, Coweta-Fayette EMC, J&M Pools/Turin Pest Control, Buffalo-Rock Pepsi; Silver Sponsor, LaGrange Gro cery; Bronze Plus Sponsors, Brent Scarbrough & Company, Davis Building & Integrated Science/FSR Homes; and Bronze Sponsors, Paramount Engineering, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Monster Tree Service, Crossroads Church, Georgia Bone & Joint, Cancer Treatment Centers of America, Shane’s Pest Solutions, AmWaste, and Tim Stout Group.

People need to do their due diligence when looking at properties to lease or buy. I would recommend using a trusted Realtor to represent you to help avoid these type scams.

From Special Reports

My suggestion here would be to close with a trusted real estate attorney and have your Realtor double check everything, including wiring instructions, before you send. You could also call the closing attorney before you send the wire to make sure the wiring instructions are correct. Wire fraud is very common.

Another type of fraud I commonly see is wire fraud. Buyers typically wire in their earnest money as part of a contract. Buyers need to make sure that they have the correct wiring instructions from the earnest money holder. Do not open suspicious e-mails from people you do not know. Real Estate closing attorneys, that typically hold earnest money as part of contracts, can call you or e-mail you with correct wiring instructions. We see scam artists create e-mail addresses and pose as the closing attorney asking for the earnest money or funds to purchase a home. They will change a letter off of the closing attorney’s e-mail address and hope their target does not notice. The scammer will then try to get their target to wire the money to the scammer’s account instead of the real estate closing attorney. With home purchases, we are talking about losing a significant amount of money.

artist Brantley Gilbert led the concert lineup which also featured LOCASH & Gyth Rigdon, & Dee Jay Silver. It was produced by Palmetto Entertainment.
