Lighting design pays off

Put your business in a good light Light can evoke emotions, set the mood, provide a sense of security or give a feeling of well-being. The right light can also change people’s behaviour. It can influence sales, create an experience for your customers and serve as part of your company’s brand. For millions of years, the only light we had came from natural sources. Today, lighting design is a matter of creating change and striking the perfect balance between natural and artificial light. That is a balance we at COWI specialise in helping our customers find. Modern lighting design benefits your business and your brand, and it helps you reach your goals.

Urban Forest, Kongens Nytorv metro station, Copenhagen

Bring your brand out into the open The key words when it comes to branding and marketing are visibility and impact. A media facade brings your company and your brand out of the office and onto your building so that your message is even more visible. A media facade can also establish the right reputation for your product, which allows you to create the image you want for your company. Regardless of what you are trying to promote, a media facade stops target audiences in their tracks and serves as a clear communication channel for an audience bombarded by outside impressions. Use artwork or an advert to get your audience to pay attention to what you are saying. Art installation Urban Forest did just that by putting Kongens Nytorv metro station in a whole new light. MEDIA FACADE

Secret Wartime Tunnels, Dover, England

Give your displays a little something extra Modern museums and exhibitions face stiff competition from amusement parks and other forms of entertainment, and attracting visitors is big business. Fortunately, COWI’s lighting design specialists have a variety of tools for attracting and holding on to an audience’s attention. Light and video projections give exhibitions the extra dimension that brings them to life. At the Secret Wartime Tunnels in Dover, England, thundering explosions and fighters buzzing overhead recreate the experience of being on the battlefield in 1940. By using light and video projection, the exhibition brings the drama of the past to life for the young audiences of today – and consistently attracts new guests. Møntergården, Odense, Denmark

Just like being there yourself Moods don’t create themselves. They must be created. The 1000-year history of the city of Odense, Denmark, is packed with important events. During the Middle Ages, Odense was a national seat of power and served as the gate between the eastern and western halves of the country. The city’s Middle Ages come to life at the 1,500 m2 museum Møntergården with the help of video projections and dynamic light displays. COWI’s lighting designs can also give your exhibition, event or meeting facility a distinctive dynamic characteristic that sets the mood, evokes emotions and gives you a unique place to make new connections with your customers. Frederik VIII Palace, Copenhagen

Spotlight on the royal art collection You would not think so, but it is possible to improve on even the most incredible works of art. More than half a million people visiting the newly renovated royal apartments in the Frederik VIII Palace in Copenhagen were given an extra experience thanks to COWI’s unique lighting solutions that brought out the best in everything there was to see. Over the past years, COWI has been responsible for a number of projects for public and private sector customers interested in putting an untraditional spotlight on their art. We can do the same for you. COWI’s services: Concept development, lighting design and installation of exhibition lighting Partner: Kvorning design & kommunikation, 2010

Moesgård Museum, Aarhus, DenmarK

Lighting design pays for itself When completed, the new Moesgård Museum will be a rare architectural gem, due in no small part to the enormous, bright galleries housing some of Denmark’s most important pre-historic treasures. We created the illusion of sunlight in several parts of the museum using modern LED technology and classic theatrics. For the guest, COWI’s lighting design adds to the experience and accentuates the architecture. For the museum, it means lower power consumption, and Moesgaard will be one of the world’s most energy efficient museums. COWI’s modern lighting design allows you to cast your building in the precise light you want, cut your power bill and help save the climate. COWI’s services: Lighting design, natural light and artificial light level simulations, 3D lighting renderings and consulting concerning conference and stage technology Partner: Henning Larsen Architects, 2009-2013

ARCHITECTURAL LIGHTING

GeoCenter Møns Klint, Møn, Denmark

Perfect illusions Today’s audiences expect effects that are among the best of the best. And that is just what we offer. Even though GeoCenter Møns Klint recreates an ancient tropical sea, it does not need a drop of water to do so. The museum’s underwater illusion has been created using specially designed lighting and smoke systems, and it has made GeoCenter Møns Klint one of Denmark’s biggest tourist attractions. COWI can help you achieve the same position in your market. Kristiansand Performing Arts Centre, Kristiansand, Norway

Lighting design accentuates the architecture Your building’s facade is your company’s business card. Lighting design accentuates the positive in your building’s architecture, the essence of your product or what is special about your brand. The Kristiansand Performing Arts Centre wanted new lighting for the building’s spectacular facade, but because of its design, it was impossible to install new lighting on the building itself. The solution was to install specially developed inground fixtures to provide the perfect accent lighting for the flowing oak facade. ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Vestas, Aarhus, Denmark

Sustainable lighting reduces power use The new corporate headquarters of wind turbine producer Vestas is as green as they come. Drawing on geothermal heating, wind energy and low-power lighting helps make the facility one of the world’s most climate-friendly buildings. COWI worked with Vestas every step of the way, including designing the building’s LED lighting, which is used in everything from facade lighting to the enormous water staircase. LED lighting reduces the power consumption and enhances the experience. All buildings, new or old, can benefit from the facelift COWI’s advanced lighting design provides. And with the energy savings they deliver, the investment begins paying for itself within just a few years. COWI’s services: Lighting design and technical consultancy Partner: Arkitema, 2010

Tietgen Building, Copenhagen

Highlight the details and hide the lightsturerne You have already invested money to make your building look good. Get people to notice it by highlighting its unique details for your partners and other visitors. Modern lighting systems can cast new light on your building without requiring the installation of visible light sources. The elegant details of Copenhagen’s Tietgen Building, dating from 1904, are highlighted without using a single visible light source. Inside, the lighting systems recreate sunlight, making it impossible to tell the difference between natural and artificial lighting. OFFICE LIGHTING

Storebrand Insurance, Oslo, Norway

New lighting increases productivity and decreases sickness absence Employee satisfaction impacts your company’s bottom line. Satisfied employees are less likely to call in sick and are more productive. A workplace that has good natural lighting is one of the most important factors influencing employee satisfaction. COWI can give your employees the workplace they deserve. Even in large spaces, such as the 1,000 m2 atrium of the Storebrand Insurance building in Oslo, Norway, it is possible to use natural lighting. A large reflector mimics the feeling of sunlight, and nourishes job satisfaction. Natural light can also make your employees more productive. From challenge to solution:

using lighting design to benefit your business One of the most important things we can do is to understand your business and your lighting needs – whether that is creating a good indoor climate or combating falling sales. Our design process includes sketches, 3D models and test lights. Our end goal is to create a lighting system that benefits your business. Read more about the way we work and the results we created for two of our customers.

NetDesign

3D video conference Need NetDesign has video conference rooms in its offices in the towns of Farum and Skejby, Denmark. The video equipment in the conference rooms used a lot of power and meeting attendees struggled with lighting that reduced contrast, gave blurry pictures and made it generally unpleasant to sit through a meeting. Solution After presenting NetDesign with a variety of different possible lighting systems, we installed new directional lamps and painted the walls a better colour. The result: more contrast, deeper picture and a conference room that was a miniature version of a real TV studio. Results The new lighting design required less power and made video conferences livelier and more productive. The improved image made it possible for employees to sit through even the longest of meetings.

Danish National Board of Industrial Injuries Better light

Need The employees at the Danish National Board of Industrial Injuries were dissatisfied with the lighting in their new office. The advanced, electronically controlled lamps created a blurred light, and managers received complaints about the lighting which was causing a poor working environment. Solution After a thorough analysis, COWI tried out a number of different lighting design solutions. We tested a number of different lights on employees, and based on their feedback we created an entirely new lighting system for the office’s 250 work stations. Results Simply addressing the problem had an effect on employees. In addition, the mood at the workplace improved and the changes had a positive effect on absence due to sickness.

Pakhuset Langelinie, Copenhagen

Good indoor climate begins with light Architecture, daylight and artificial lighting are all incorporated elements of the most advanced office spaces. Pension firm ATP’s new office building will seek to create the best indoor climate possible for its employees as well as its guests. Thanks to a unique combination of architecture and lighting design, the building’s interior will be lit by the maximum amount of sunlight possible. Perforations in the facade and the roof will let the sun shine in, and the sunlight’s reflection in the surrounding water will serve as inspiration for the building’s lighting design. The harmony of artificial and natural lighting will create an inspiring and unique workplace for ATP’s employees.

Sunlight makes sales grow It is springtime and the sun is shining. Customers, though, no longer need to choose between enjoying the great outdoors or indoor shopping centres. In WAVES shopping centre in suburban Copenhagen, large skylights welcome the sun and the guests. COWI performed light simulations and developed a lighting solution that makes people feel welcome and increases their willingness to spend money. Tomorrow’s attractions will use light to create satisfied guests who stay longer and spend more money. COWI’s services: Daylight simulations Partner: PLH Arkitekter, 2009

URBAN SPACES Dimly lit car parks and empty urban spaces can leave some people feeling uneasy. Making them feel safe, however, does not have to cost a fortune. COWI’s lighting designs use as few light sources as possible to illuminate car parks and warehouses. Lighting can also be used to lead customers to the right entrance. Using the right type of lighting helps keep power consumption at a minimum, which saves you money and helps your customers spend theirs. One of the customers benefitting from COWI’s services is the Prøvestenscenteret in Elsinore, Denmark, where our lighting designs guide customers straight to the entrance. LIGHT AND ART COWI helps companies and other organisations reach their goals. But we are also passionate about technology and art. That passion led us to join forces with 3XN Architects and Stage One to create the sustainable sculpture of the future for the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in 2009. The sculpture uses solar panels and the movement of playing children to generate power for lighting. The project was awarded the 2010 JEC Innovation Award for its innovative use of sustainable materials. COWI’s services: Concept development, lighting design and energy efficiency Partner: 3XN, 2009

City of Odense Pavilion, EXPO 2010, Shanghai

Urban branding using lighting Light is an ideal way to make your mark. The city of Odense, Denmark, took advantage of light’s ability to get a message across when the city designed its pavilion at the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, China. The pavilion’s central element was the city’s success promoting cycling. Also featured was the city’s most famous inhabitant, storyteller Hans Christian Andersen. COWI helped out, from the initial bright idea to creating beaming smiles on the faces of the guests. We are ready to put your image and your products in the perfect lighting, day or night.
