South End volunteer firefighters were the third department to respond to a house fire in as many days when they were dispatched to a blaze Thursday night. Emergency dispatchers received

“four or five calls” about the fire, located at 6496 Diana Dr., just off Wicks Road, the home of Jan Heerwagen and her husband Bjorn (BJ). They built the house in 1982. It was the first house in the subdivision. “The firewall he put in was extra strong,” Jan said of her car-

Jon Lefebure, North Cowichan’s mayor from 2002-2008, squeaked by incumbent Tom Walker by a mere 26 votes Saturday to reclaim his old seat and a third term as mayor. “I had my doubts about it,” Lefebure admitted on Monday. “I guess that’s not unnatural when you’ve worked hard and you lose the vote in your own home town.” Lefebure lives in Chemainus and voters in that community were integral to Walker’s victory over Lefebure in 2008. This time the results were reversed. “That was incredibly satisfying,” Lefebure said. In an ironic twist, the Chemainus poll was the last to report. “It was not looking good and we were down to the one poll which we had to wait for and wait for,” Lefebure said. “The Chemainus poll just happened to have a glitch and be delayed in the counting, there was no other reason for it to be the last poll. It just played into the drama.” He knew the results were in when he heard a shriek from the other room. “It threw me, like an electric current,” he said. Not long thereafter he got a call from Walker. “Tom was very gracious,” Lefebure said. “It’s not an

The rain stopped briefly for Remembrance Day ceremonies in Duncan on Friday morning, but the afternoon’s foul weather resulted in thousands without power in the Cowichan Valley. It was a “pretty intense” first storm of the season, according to BC Hydro spokesman Ted Olynyk, who said, at its peak, around 4 p.m., more than 6,000 customers were affected throughout the Cowichan Valley. “Damage to lines, downed lines, trees down across lines,” he said. “All storm-related.” Winds reaching 60 kilometres per hour blasted parts of the island, knocking out electricity and creating havoc with the water. Olynyk said the hardest hit spot on the Island was just north of Nanaimo but that the Cowichan Valley also saw its share of outages. “We work year-round to maintain the resiliency of our system,” he said. “Whether it’s through vegetation management or hardening of the distribution system. We’ll never eliminate outages completely but what we

SEAFOOD: Cowichan fisherman takes ‘community supported agriculture’ model out onto the waves, hooks Valley interest SARAH SIMPSON CITIZEN

In Community Supported Agriculture members pay a farmer in advance, which helps the farmer make ends meet in the winter months. In turn members are treated to fresh produce come harvest time. It’s a win-win for both farmer and consumer — fresh local food for financial stability. But fish? You bet. Alderlea Farm’s John Ehrlich says the “Community Supported” model “creates the ultimate connection between the producer and the consumer which raises the consciousness of consumers, especially in regard to such highly important and valuable services like producing food sustainably.” Cowichan is in the middle of a transition back to its agricultural roots. More and more people are praising the merits of local goods. But something not often thought of, and somewhat surprisingly, is Cowichan’s other “garden” — the mighty Pacific Ocean — surrounding the whole of Vancouver Island. Kristen Ruecker, a spokesperson for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans said in 2010 there were 59 commercial fishing vessels registered to owners in Ladysmith, North Cowichan, Duncan and the Cowichan Valley Regional District. “According to the information provided to the Department, these vessels harvested 56 different types of species totalling 2.516 million pounds for an estimated value of $4.279 million,” Ruecker said. Local fisherman Guy Johnston, the captain of the 40-foot fishing vessel dubbed the Michelle Rose, is not surprised. “When the First Nations came here they didn’t try growing potatoes. They figured out, hey [the ocean] is where you get your food,” he said. Johnston is leaning on experienced farmers like Ehrlich to help him set up a saltier version of Community Supported Agriculture — a Community Supported Fishery. Ehrlich was happy to oblige his fellow small-scale producer. “Given the state of the world economy, small producers who have quality in mind cannot easily compete with the large fishing and agriculture industries,” he said. Johnston is hoping the move will keep his livelihood afloat. He said fishermen are getting paid less for most of their salmon then they were when he started out some 35 years ago. “For the prawns, our prices fell about six years ago and they’re

A commercial prawn trapper and a hook and line salmon troller, Johnston typically sells his haul to big companies. But he’s starting to think this new venture is the way to go. The Community Supported Fishery uses the same “pay now, enjoy later” method as its agricultural cousin. “As we’re rigging up our boats at the beginning of the season, that’s when we’re shortest of change,” Johnston said. “To be able to have money coming in at that time is a real benefit.” Knowing his catch has already been spoken for takes a lot of stress out of the equation as well. “To know just how much we can

actually bring back makes a huge difference for us.” Previously if he arrived at the wharf on a rainy day, customers wouldn’t be there, leaving him with extra fish. “Then I have to scramble and find out what to do with it,” he explained. “It can put you at a fair bit of risk sometimes.” The CSF program means there’s a built in market for the fisherman — even for his fair-weather customers. Without a change Johnston figures his fishing days were numbered. “Either we gave up or we try something different,” Johnston said. “It’s working good for the farmers.” Initially, Johnston figured a CSF membership of about 30 people constituted success.

Through little more than two small meetings at the Ehrlich farm, a third in Cowichan Bay, and some word of mouth, his program netted 60 investors. “I kept on getting email after email,” he said. “Most of the people I don’t know. In fact it rather astounded me that people were willing to send me cheques never even having met. It’s quite amazing.” The inaugural distribution day was July 8 — the first of five between July and mid-December. Victoria’s Belle Leon and Gabe Epstein made the trip up on behalf of a small group of South Island residents. Some 25 folks from Victoria, or one-third of the total group, signed up for the program. Johnston facilitates a carpooling/pickup option.

In addition to their own haul, Leon and Epstein also picked up for two other people. They’d be happy to do it again. “It’s nice to come for a drive. Someone else can come out next time,” Leon said while walking to her car clutching one of her cooler’s two handles. Epstein had the other. “We love it,” he said. “I love buying straight from the supplier. Anything that cuts off those darned big corporations,” added Leon. The pair said they enjoy reading the ship’s (b)log online (http:// communitysupportedfishing.blogspot.com). The happy couple was thrilled to know their seafood was battled for against prawn-loving octopi before being scooped out of the chilly drink, and immediately stored in the massive freezer in the hull of the Michelle Rose. What volumes of each product customers like Leon and Epstein receive depend on what the crew catches throughout the season. On July 8, members received two pounds of prawns and a pound of king shrimp. The salmon season starts soon. “It’ll change year to year in terms of salmon because in different years, different runs are predominant, but this year it’ll be mainly pinks and sockeye,” Johnston said. The price of the full meal deal is $300, which gets members about $200 worth of prawns and shrimp and another $100 worth of salmon. Members could also order a half-package for $150 or go with just salmon or only prawns and shrimp ($200 each). “Some people are buying a couple of shares,” he said. “Some are just shellfish, some are just salmon.” Given the prawn season just ended July 1, Johnston has no more room for would-be buyers in that group but he said he might be able to squeeze in another couple for salmon. Either way, he’s open to folks getting in touch to sign up for next year. He knows there’s just something about fresh seafood that many can’t seem to resist. But it’s not just the seafood, Johnston said. He admits he’s worked out a swap with the farmers that have helped him set up his new venture — their produce for his fish. “It’s good eating right?” he said with a laugh. “You can’t argue it.” For more information, go right to the source. An air ambulance landed in the middle of the Trans Canada Highway about 9:30 a.m. on Monday morning to airlift a victim from the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash near Valleyview Centre. Police investigation has revealed

that a southbound four-door Subaru Impreza had attempted to turn left off the highway and onto Cowichan Bay Road. A northbound Ford F350 pickup truck towing a utility trailer struck the newer model Impreza. “Upon impact the Subaru was sent approximately 100 feet back-

wards up the TCH,” Shawnigan Lake RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Rob Webb said Monday afternoon. The small red car came to rest on the northbound side of the highway, forcing its closure for approximately two hours. Traffic was redirected through

Cowichan Bay. A 70-year-old Nanaimo woman was the passenger in the Subaru. Cowichan Bay and Mill Bay volunteer fire departments extracted her from the car using the Jaws of Life. She was taken to Victoria General Hospital and as of Tuesday afternoon was in the Intensive

hope to do it lessen the impact on our customers, whether that’s through the duration of the outage, or frequency of outages.” Olynyk said smart meters will help Hydro do that. “It’ll make it a lot easier for us to attend to outages,” he said. “We’ll know where the outage is occurring.” Currently, Hydro waits for phone calls from customers complaining their power is out. Smart meters, he says, will automatically send the information. “We’ll still want people to call 1-888-POWER-ON to let us know if there’s a safety issue,” he said. “And we still need people to call that number now to let us know about outages.” Social media played a roll in notifications for B.C. Ferries as staff took to Twitter Friday with up to the minute news on delays and cancellations. Most routes on the network — including the Crofton-Vesuvius and Mill Bay-Brentwood Bay sailings — were affected because of high winds. Smaller ships, too, were affected.
