The Rights of Nature
Around the globe, a movement of immense import has been building. There is a growing body of law that supports the idea that humans are not the only species with rights. Lawyers are fighting courtroom battles to protect the legally enforceable rights of chimpanzees, rivers, forests, killer whales, and more. And if nature has rights, then humans have responsibilities.
The Rights of Nature: A Legal Revolution That Could Save the World is a timely and important exploration of the ways in which our cultures and laws must adapt to provide the necessary protection for the planet and the species with whom we share it. David R. Boyd pleads a hopeful case that a legal revolution may be the solution for the current global environmental crisis. David R. Boyd is an environmental lawyer, professor, and advocate for recognition of the right to live in a healthy environment. Boyd is the award-winning author of eight books, including The Optimistic Environmentalist, and co-chaired Vancouver’s Greenest City initiative with Mayor Gregor Robertson. He lives on Pender Island.
