Tree Retreat

Being sick is stressful. To add insult to injury, hospitalization puts already vulnerable people into environments with unpleasant sights, sounds, smells, and feelings. For those with long-term illnesses, hopes of finding an escape from this reality can be thwarted by ongoing treatment, monitoring, or accessibility concerns. A design for a retreat centre near hospital grounds puts a getaway within reach of those who need it most. This project, set in a wooded valley landscape at a busy Toronto hospital, explores themes of biophilia, coping, family-centred care, respite, and escape.
