National Director’s Message
By Bill Genasci
It appears that there is finally some light at the end of the tunnel for the dairy industry. Milk supplies have moderated, storage inventories are down, and the futures look promising. The past four years have taken a severe toll on dairy producers from coast to coast, but hopefully the worst is behind us. At the March meeting, the Holstein Association USA Board voted to support the Dairy Price Stabilization Program (DPSP) as a way to avoid this situation in the future. Developed in 2009, DPSP allows controlled growth, (at a cost to the dairyman expanding), while rewarding those that keep their production stable. Research has shown that if this program had been implemented as part of the 2014 Farm Bill milk prices would have been higher, fluctuations would have been less severe, and fewer dairymen would have been forced to exit the industry. Copies of the DPSP program are available from HAUSA. The Information Technology (IT) major update at HAUSA is proceeding on budget. When completed, all programs and processes should be easier to use, and information more readily available. It is also designed so that future updates will be quicker and less expensive. This has been a major investment in both time and money, but it will pay dividends in customer service and efficiency. If you are one of the many Holstein Breeders who have chosen to breed the bottom end of your animals to beef bulls, the HOLSim Beef Project should be of interest to you. Although this program is still in
development, here are a few basic facts: Holstein-beef cross calves bring a premium price over purebred Holstein calves. As a Holstein breeder, you know that not all sires are the same, and not all matings produce the same quality of offspring. It appears that SIMAngus Sires are the best beef cross on Holsteins to produce superior carcass traits. The American Simmental Association and International Genetic Solutions have teamed with HAUSA to use genetic testing and develop an index to identify the SIMAngus Sires that create the most valuable carcass traits. When completed, the HOLSim program will provide you with the opportunity to create more valuable beef cross calves to improve your bottom line. I’m sure you will hear more as information becomes available. If you would like to hear more about the HOLSim branded beef program now you can contact Darin Johnson at (802) 451-4048; djohnson@holstein.com. I would like to thank the membership for giving me the opportunity to serve as your director. My first year has been very informative, and it has been a joy to watch the board members approach every issue with the best interests of the membership in the forefront. If you have any questions or comments I can be reached at 209-7657111 or genace1@aol.com.

Doug Maddox Memorial Senior Breeder Award Ken Mevold grew up on a dairy farm west of Lodi, CA where he was an active member of the Lodi High School FFA. Displaying his eye for good livestock at even that young age, he was on the FFA State Champion Livestock Judging Team in 1958, and was named an FFA State Farmer in 1959. He continued his judging career at Fresno State College as a member of the dairy judging team under the guidance of Dr. Bob Selkirk. While at Fresno State, he was also a charter member of the agriculture fraternity, Alpha Gamma Rho. After graduation in 1964, he went to work as herdsman for Willamonte Holsteins in Wadsworth, NV, and after a couple of years, took on the herdsman position for Champ Goodwood Holsteins in Ellsberry, MO. After that, he worked for Cash Bottema, caring for the show string which included traveling across the country by railcar. On April 16, 1971 he married Marlene Cobb. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Christina Lyn and Anne Elizabeth. Ken and Marlene established their own prefix as well: Ken-Mar-Vue.

A.J. Quist Memorial Young Breeder Award With nearly 100 years of dairy farming in the U.S., the Santos family of Tulare, CA, has a rich history of caring for their land and their cows. Michael Santos Jr. has spent his adult-life thinking about how to improve the genetics of the herd, while increasing milk production, and breeding cows that still look good. These reasons are why he was chosen at the 2019 AJ Quist Memorial Young Breeder Award recipient. Terra Linda is home to 1300 milking and 175 dry cows and 2000 replacement females with 90-95% of the herd homebred. Terra Linda Dairy has been the highest producing dairy in Tulare County for the last five years and boasts a herd average of 34,137M milk on 3x milking. They have also received numerous Milk Quality Awards from Land O’ Lakes Creamery. The breeding philosophy at Terra Linda is simple – emphasis on production with functional feet and legs and good mammary systems. They also focus on production traits, such as milk, fat and protein. “We believe in cows that have the capacity to work hard and breed back,” notes Michael. They aim for a medium to larger cow that can produce larger volumes of milk as well. And while production is the main goal, Michael still aims to breed cows that look good. “We want cows that will go on to be Very Good and potentially Excellent, while still maintaining high production.” To date, there are 42 EX and 892 VG cows carrying the Terra-Linda prefix. The Santos family has always been focused on the genetics of their herd and making genetic strides. When genomics was introduced to the industry as a management tool, Terra Linda turned its attention to that. “We see a tremendous value in having DNA results on each and every calf to make careful management decisions,” commented Michael. Since 2014, every animal on the farm has been genomic tested. With this change, the farm also ramped up its ET and IVF plan. In 2017, the original 1944 flat barn was converted to an IVF lab and work room with a chute. Currently they IVF 20-25 donors every two weeks and conventionally flush four to six donors twice a month. Terra Linda is putting in several hundred embryos a month; and working with other herds across the country as well. Because every animal is genomic tested, Michael notes that there is a potential for any animal to go through their genetic program. “We use the genomic information to determine who receives embryos, sexed semen, conventional semen or who is used a recipient. To me, it’s the best investment you can make to have a cow’s potential future at your fingertips.” And with this whole-herd approach to genomics, Terra Linda has qualified for Holstein Association USA’s Progressive Genetics Herd Award eight times over the recent years. A cow family that MIchael has invested in and had numerous successes with is Larcrest Cosmopolitan (VG-87 GMD DOM). The Sandy-Valley herd is one that Michael has admired for their continued success on both the male and female side. Ms Terra-Linda Pepper-ET had preliminary genomics of +2898G +995NM in February 2017 and topped the Fun in the Sun West Sale that same month, selling to Peak Genetics for $170,000. Terra Linda consigned Lot 1 to the National Holstein Convention, a +2944G +1109NM Tahiti from the Sully Shottle May-TW (EX-91 2E DOM) family. She will be the highest GTPI +NM$ heifer to sell at public auction to date!
38 California Holstein News 2019
Mike Santos Jr., middle, with wife Leslie and daughter Noelle, surrounded by friends & family. A new family that Michael has recently invested in is Our-Favorite Unlimted-ET (EX-94 96-MS), who has had numerous progeny and family members come out high in numbers. Our-Favorite Restless-ET (VG-88) is a Kingboy direct from Unlimited. She has four Denver daughters all over +3.2T with her highest at +4.04T +3.30UDC +1.64FLC. Restless is owned in partnership with Raspberry Futures and they have Hancock embryos they are planning to implant for 2020 show-aged calves. Additionally, Michael just sent six bulls to Select Sires, ranging from +2830G to +2927G, sired by Solution and Tahiti. Michael has pretty strict criteria when selecting his mating sires. “My main rule of thumb is milk and CFP traits along with GTPI being at a certain threshold.” He like sires to be at least +1500M +145CFP. With the GTPI formula constantly changing, he is a bit more flexible with that number. “Right now, anything over +2800 is put into consideration after analyzing their production traits and pedigrees,” he concluded. Pre-lease sires currently being used include: · 200HO11586 EINSTEIN (Topnotch x Duke x Supershot) · 200HO11330 MAESTRO (Imax x Duke x Bombero) · 29HO18960 ACCURA (Achiever x Profit x Supersire) · 250HO14710 MESCALERO (Pinnacle x Rubicon x Supersire) · 29HO18837 OAKDALE (Charley x Delta x Supersire) · 7HO14364 EISAKU (Samuri x Rubicon x Morgan) Michael pays close attention to the sire stacks that he uses on the complete herd as well. “I prefer to use sires that have proven dams that come from good cow families,” he added. They work exclusively with young genomic sires and use bulls from Select Sires, ABS Global, Semex, Alta Genetics and ST. Current herd sires, most of which are sexed semen, include Embellish, Emerald, Challenger, Duke, Excalibur, Solution, Tropic, Honda, Yoda & Kenobi. For Terra Linda Dairy, the future certainly seems hopeful. While focusing on the marketing potential of certain animals, they haven’t lost sight of the big picture. “At the end of the day, we are still just dairymen and our cows need to milk,” remarked Michael. By using the tools available to them, they’ve balanced breeding good cows with high production while improving the genetic footprint of the entire herd. The passion that Michael Jr. has for the dairy is evident in everything that he does and plans to do for the next generation of cows and people.

Junior President’s Message Hello, my name is Samantha Gambonini and I am the 2019-2020 California Junior Holstein Association President. I am 16 years old and I grew up in Petaluma, CA on my family ranch, Gamlake Dairy. I am a fifth generation dairy farmer and I raise and care for a herd of 46 registered Holstein and Jersey dairy cattle. I have been an active member of the CA Junior Holstein Association for many years through competing in dairy bowl and speech competitions, attending the annual Cow Camp, and attending numerous Holstein shows around the nation. This past summer, our juniors had many days spent at their local fairs but in between that, a few of them had the amazing opportunity of traveling to Traverse City, Michigan to compete at the 2018 National Holstein Convention. California’s name can be read in almost every competition as the winner or a close second! Our junior dairy bowl team consisting of Rachel Mancebo, Emma van Loben Sels, Victoria Paolini, and Reese Renati received 4th High Team. Our senior dairy bowl team consisted of Alyssa Timoschuk, Tim Elmer, William Claflin, and Karleen Lopez. In the dairy jeopardy contest, Mikel Mull, Lindsay Elmer, Kaylie Vander Meulen, Hannah Mancebo, Jennifer DeVries, and MacKenzie Elmer all participated and Hayley Fernades was name the National Intermediate Champion with Jacob Fernades following her closely in second place. Siana Barrett received 2nd place for her folding display and created California’s 1st place winning national banner. Additionally, Alexandra Gambonini represented California as the National Distinguished Junior Member. The juniors excelled at the National Convention and created many friendships with people around our nation!

This past February, our State Holstein Convention was held in Lemoore, CA. South San Joaquin held a fantastic convention and juniors from across the state traveled to compete and participate in dairy bowl, dairy jeopardy, speech competitions, workshops, and more. Many juniors were chosen and competed for a spot on the national team to compete this summer in Appleton, Wisconsin at the National Holstein Convention. These individuals representing California include our junior dairy bowl team consisting of Reese Renati, Mykel Mull, Victoria Paolini, and Emma van Loben Sels, and our senior dairy bowl team of Abbi Prins, Kylie Konyn, Jacob Fernades, and Hayley Fernades. Our dairy jeopardy participants include Sebi Paolini, Kiara Konyn, William Claflin, Jennifer DeVries, Alyssa Timoschuk, and Arielle Spotswood. Furthermore, our speech contestants are Evie Reidman, Alyssa Timoschuk, and Emma van Loben Sels. This summer from June 18th to the 20th is our annual Cow Camp. This year it is held in Fresno and is open to ages 9-21. Our juniors have the opportunity to learn more about the dairy industry, create friendships with people around our state, and have great experience at this year’s Cow Camp! It is an honor to serve the California Junior Holstein Association as the Junior President and I am extremely excited to see what our juniors achieve this year!

Breeder of the Future Award Winners MARILYN HERZOG BREEDER OF THE FUTURE GIRL
BREEDER OF THE FUTURE BOY
“I think perhaps this award is more than just being the Breeder of the Future, its for being part of the future of dairy, and I plan to be that.” Emma van Loben Sels, 14, is the winner of this year’s Breeder of the Future Girl award, now presented by Marilyn Herzog.
Logan Silveira, 13, of Chowchilla, is a three year member of his 4-H Club and CJHA. He says his passion for the dairy industry started at age 8, when he started working on his family’s dairy, Silveira Dairy. “I learned that raising dairy heifers takes hard work and dedication. I had to learn to balance school, sports and dairy.” Over the last year, he has started to be more active on the dairy, helping with vet checks, using DairyComp and learning more about the dairy’s breeding program.
Emma was given her first calf by her grandparents in 2013. Over the last six years, she has purchased more animals from the earnings of working on the farm. She now owns 12 Registered Holsteins who average GP82 and have an impressive 31,615M 1129F 974P average. On the farm, she helps feed calves, clean the barn, feed grain rations, and assists with herd health and vaccinations. “I love working on the dairy and I see some of the difficulty that goes along with that profession, low milk prices, labor problems, longs days, short nights. I like being there to help as often as I can, and some days I’m really needed.”
Logan is a 4-H member and exhibits animals at the Chowchilla Fair, Madera District Fair, CA State Fair, Cow Palace and Western Classic Dairy Show. He enjoys competing in Showmanship and was the 2nd place Junior Open Dairy Showman at Cow Palace in 2018. At the 2018 Madera District Fair, he won two division Junior Champion titles and was Reserve Champion female with a Senior 3-year-old from his family’s dairy. Because of his involvement with his dairy projects, he was the 4-H County Record Book Winner in 2017-2018.
Emma has been an active member of the Merced County Junior Holstein Club and California Junior Holstein Association for Logan has participated in Dairy Judging since five years. “Some True California Boys” If you are looking for high type these full brothers fit the bill! JAKE and JET are full brothers by KASHMIR and sons of the 2018 All-California Senior 2-Year-Old, RUANN DOORMAN JEAN55162-ET EX-92, who went on to be nominated All-American and is fresh again and looks to continue her winning ways! This cow family being developed by the Maddox family of RUANN Genetics got its start in California in the early 1960s with the cow NUNESDALE NOBLE JEAN VG-87 who was the dam of the well known cow NUNESDALE ORIGINAL JEANNIE EX-95 4E. She was nominated All-American multiple times in the 1970s for owner and breeder Tom Nunes. Almost 60 years, 8 generations VG/EX, of California breeding behind these two bulls. The California Convention Sale has been one of the premier venues to purchase California bred animals over the years. FRENCHIE’s grandam, DEN-K MASSEY MELODY VG-86, sold through the 2014 California Convention Sale as a choice. She was consigned by DEN-K Holsteins and purchased by TRIFECTA Genetics. FRENCHIE’s 10th dam, born in 1980, is DEN-K MARS MARIE EX-90 GMD DOM who was the first generation of this prominent California-bred family to carry the DEN-K prefix! Other results of a purchase at a California Convention Sale are brothers PILEUP and CD, CRUSH and SOLOMON sons bred by CALORI-D Holsteins. Their dam is an EX BEEMER daughter of RUANN GOLD C POSCH-22563-ET EX-91, purchased in 2013 Sale from RUANN Genetics. These boys complete 7 generations of California breeding! Interesting fact is their third dam is the
fourth dam of RUANN KENEDY POSCH-85077-ET 2878 GTPI 1060 NM$ who sold for $130,000 this spring to DENOVO Genetics through the Fun in the Sun-Bovino Vineyards Sale. Regardless of your interest, this family can make them! ROCKFORD should be in the tank of California dairyman! Great production, health and fitness with a solid type proof and no holes linear, this CHARLEY son hails from a cow family that has proven itself generation after generation at Hilmar Holsteins. TOM is another bull that checks all the boxes when selecting sires for the future of your business! More recently being developed by Curtis Vanden Berge this cow family thrived for generations in a commercial California dairy setting at Dias & Dias. If you like showing reds BUTCH should be the bull to get you to the winner’s circle! This high type AVALANCHE son is a 10th generation carrying the RUANN prefix and hails from one of their prominent cow families that traces back to the early 1970s. If there is any question as to whether the family can make show winners, look no further than BUTCH’s full sister, RUANN AVALA BONNIE-65924-RED-ET VG-87, the Reserve All-California Senior 2-Year-Old and Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Red and Whites at the 2019 California State Holstein Show.
