“Joy is the simplest form of gratitude.” e did it – give yourself a pat on W the back! Whether you were an exhibitor, visitor, or an avid spectator

watching from home, we partook in another World Dairy Expo. The annual week-long gathering in Madison, Wisconsin highlights every aspect of the dairy industry, as demonstrated by the mind-boggling trade show, but it is, in particular, a special celebration of those animals walking on the colored shavings. We all know the costs involved in taking care of show cattle. The many, many hours at home, the many miles traveled to shows, the staggering expense of feed, hotels, gas, entries, etc. At Expo, more cattle leave the ring without a ribbon than with one. Why, then, do we keep going back for more? Hopefully, you can see some answers on the cover of this issue. The beauty of these dairy cattle; the love we all have for them; the joy when that hard work IS rewarded with a big rosette or being named an Expo Champion. Even if we weren’t in the presentation photos ourselves, even if we stood in 23rd place in the class, even if we watched from the farm office at home or followed the updates on Facebook – this is our community. We don’t all get to be in the winner’s circle, but we all have a connection to these champions somehow. Maybe we were in the crowd when Gold Barbara sold at public auction as a 2-year-old; maybe we tied next to Lily at Syracuse; or maybe we were on the wash rack next to Blanche. Have you used a son of Delilah; or maybe you bid

on a heifer from the same family as Spritz; do you remember Malt as a heifer at the Northwest WI Parish Show; or were you rooting for Stinger after seeing her finish 2nd last year? We can’t all be in the spotlight, but we all know the dedication it takes for a life with dairy cattle – show cattle or not. Our lives are these cattle, our days are spent caring for them, raising them, studying them, nurturing them, treating them, and overseeing their every move. And this is why we love the photos on this cover – they capture a bit of the feeling of why everyone gets up early every morning 365 days a year; why we all gather at ringside when the champion is named; why we all taste a bit of the victory even if we’re not taking home the hardware. Well done, everybody – we’ll see you back in Madison next year. With Thanksgiving just past us on the Canadian calendar and just ahead of us on the American calendar, it’s also the perfect time for us to express our gratitude to the members of our Cowsmo team that have covered shows and sales all fall, but especially during the wonderful, frantic week of Expo. You can throw healthy eating and regular sleep out the window that week, and yet, we applaud our team for bringing nothing but enthusiasm, professionalism, and a

big dose of laughter to a full, full week of coverage. You guys are simply the best. We’re incredibly thankful for the continued support of the subscribers and advertisers to this magazine. Our first issues have been received with passion and positivity – we’re delighted! We’ve had a few glitches and growing pains, but we’re sorting those out. Our goal is for every issue to be educational, engaging, and delivered seamlessly – please keep letting us know how we can improve. While the actual 2019 show season may be winding down, our work here at Cowsmo is just beginning with the year-end competitions! The All-West Contest will be featured in our Winter issue, which will be in mailboxes in early December. The All-American Holstein & Jersey nominations will be a big part of our new January issue, and the Junior All-American Holstein & Jersey contests highlight our new February issue! We’re SO excited to bring these respected competitions to you this winter – keep an eye on Cowsmo.com for more details and announcements!

WORLD DAIRY EXPO 2019 Delilah . . . the name says it all. After selling for a world-record price in the Brown Swiss breed earlier this fall, Cutting Edge T Delilah arrived in Madison, WI, ready to defend her title. “What a cow folks! It is truly an honor to get to place this cow. She is just an impressive individual,” commented Judge Joe Sparrow during his reasons in the Aged Cow class. “Our winning Aged Cow needs no introduction. She is just a dairy train coming at you. Her dairy strength is second to no cow I’ve ever seen. And she just floats around this ring and moves with grace,” he concluded during the Senior Champion lineup. Delilah walked away with Grand Champion honors once again, and would eventually capture the Supreme Champion title for the second year in a row. The judges were unanimous in their decision of Supreme Champion. She is now owned by Ken Main and Kenny Joe Manion, Copake, NY, who were also named Premier Exhibitor of the Brown Swiss Show with their Elite Dairy II partnership. The original partnership of Ken Main and Peter Vail, Elite Dairy, earned their fourth consecutive Premier Breeder title. Winning the prestigious title of Supreme Champion Heifer in both the Open and Junior Divisions was Milksource Thunder-Red-ET, an Avalanche fall calf owned by Molly Olstad and Tristan Ostrom, Stoughton, WI. “This fall calf for us is the Junior Champion quite handingly,” commented Judge Jamie Black during the International Red & White Show. “A heifer that is extremely well balanced and has loads of style.” Reserve Supreme Champion honors of the Open Show went to two animals coming off bigs wins from the Eastern States Exposition. De La Plaine Bingo Stinger, the winning Ayrshire 5-Year-Old, was selected as Reserve Supreme Champion for Blue Spruce Farm, VT. She was Grand Champion at the Big E just weeks prior. Windcroft Dr Irreplaceable14 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall Special Edition 2019

ET was the winning Summer Yearling of the International Holstein Show for Westcoast Holsteins, BC. She was Junior Champion for previous owners, Allyn, Hovden, Gibbs, Carpenter, Mitchell, Dickson & Black, CT, at the Notheast Fall National Holstein Show at the Big E in mid-September. Red & White and Wisconsin favorite MeadManor Def Adeline-Red was the winning Junior 3-Year-Old for Mike & Megan Moede and was selected as Supreme Champion of the Junior Show. She was also named Best Bred & Owned of the Open and Junior Divisions of the International Red & White Show. Adeline was also Grand Champion of the Wisconsin Championship Red & White Show earlier this summer. Reserve Supreme Heifer honors went to NorBert Lochin Vesta owned by Dalton, Dillon and Breanne Freeman, IN. Vesta was the 2nd Fall Yearling and named Reserve Junior Champion of the Open Show as well. She is no stranger to the show ring, capturing Supreme Heifer honors of the Premier National Junior Show at the All American Dairy Show in September, along with numerous other Junior Champion wins in 2019. The above results wouldn’t be possible without the care and hard work of everyone behind the scenes, both at the shows and at home. As you walked the pavilions at Expo this year, the large strings of animals certainly stood out. Whether they were all from one breeder, or were “regional” groups traveling together, or boarding businesses, the successes they had throughout the week across numerous breeds takes endurance and determination! Here is just a sampling of some of these strings: - Budjon Farms & Budjon Boarding, WI: 52 head exhibited in 5 shows; 12 1st & 2nd places, 13 additional top 10 placings; 1 Grand Champion, 2 Reserve Grand Champions & 1 Reserve Junior Champion

- Northeast Group (Ridale Genetics, Blue Spruce Farm, Hardy Farm, Four-Hills plus numerous tie-ins): 35 head shown in 6 shows; 27 animals in the top 10, with 17 of those Ayrshires; 2 Grand Champions and 2 Reserve Champions and 1 HM Champion - Lookout Farm, QC: 31 head in 3 breeds; 17 animals in the top 5 with 5 class winners and 4 additional 2nd or 3rd places; Junior Champion, Reserve Junior Champion and HM Intermediate Champion wins - Glamourview, MD: 38 shown in 6 breeds; 28 top 10 placings; 5 1st place wins; 2 Junior Champions & 1 Intermediate & HM Grand Champion - Franchise Kind, OH: 22 head in 3 breeds; 12 in top 5 & 20 in top 10; 2 Reserve Intermediate Champions & 1 HM Champion - Eaton Holsteins, NY: 28 head shown in 3 breeds; 5 1st place & 12 head in top 6; Grand Champion, Intermediate & HM Grand Champion, Junior Champion, HM Senior Champion - Interstate Heifer Care and MD-Hillbrook, MD: 5 breeds with 19 total head; 16 of 19 placed in the top 10 with 10 in the top 6 - Western Canada Group (Westcoast, Unique Valleystream, Benbie, Robella): 35 total in 3 breeds; 16 in the top 10; Junior Champion

EXPO CHAMPIONS AT HOME We’ve all seen the World Dairy Expo champions from this year looking their best, but what are they like at home? We talked to the people behind the cows to learn a bit more about each of the breed champions from 2019.

DE LA PLAINE BINGO STINGER EX-94

Housed at: Blue Spruce Farm, Bridport, VT

“Stinger is a great cow to work with - very consistent and always has a laid back look to her. She seems to enjoy her day and trips to the milking parlor. Every now and then, she likes her head scratched. With that said, she is no pushover and has a fierce side. She likes being at the shows but doesn’t like to lead, even though she’s been shown every year of her life!,” according to Nathan Audet. Stinger is bred back for mid-summer 2020, and if all goes well, the Audets plan to take her to the show circuit again next fall. She will have a few IVF sessions done in the near future to get a few pregnancies, then will enjoy some time off.

CUTTING EDGE T DELILAH EX-95

Housed at : Elite Dairy II, Copake, NY

“Delilah is the kind of cow that any dairyman would always hope for. She is so easy going at the farm and always ready to go to the next show at anytime. A week after returning home from Expo, she had 107 lbs. milk for the tester, something that she didn’t even have to work hard at doing. Her calm demeanor can easily be seen in the ring when Kyle parades her around, barely even holding the halter!,” commented Ken Main, one of Delilah’s owners and caretakers. Delilah will be bred again for next show season, with hopes that she will return to the tanbark in 2020. When she settles, she will start on an IVF program.

VALLEY GEM ATLAS MALT-ET EX-92

Housed at: Valley Gem Farms, Cumberland, WI

“Malt’s personality at home is a strong one, to say the least – she’s very dominant! We joke around and tell everyone she has her own pen, but it’s more for the safety of others! One thing is for sure - never get in between her and food. She can hear the feed pans being prepped a mile away and is ready to aggressively eat anytime! Though she is aggressive, she’s also low stress, and she does enjoy the occasional scratches,” smiles Kim Grewe. Currently, Malt is being bred back and will be entering an IVF program.

BUTZ-BUTLER GOLD BARBARA EX-95

Housed at: Kueffner Holsteins, Boonsboro, MD

“She enjoys affection on her own terms” sums it up for Barbara according to caretakers Ernie Kueffner & Terri Packard. She loves to be outside on pasture and chooses that location first over going to her box stall. “She’s very efficient at turning grass into milk – she won’t dry up if she’s still grazing,” mentions Terri. Always good to work with on a day-to-day basis, she’s a no nonsense cow to be around. Barbara is due to be flushed soon to sexed Solomon to fill an embryo order for Japan.

BRI-LIN VALSON SPRITZ EX-94

Housed at: Triple-T, North Lewisburg, OH

“Spritz is the kind of cow that is the same everyday, whether at the farm or at the show,” according to Nathan Thomas who cares for Spritz at home and away. “She’s a really easy going, go with the flow kind of cow that will never be the one to ‘pick a fight’ with another cow in the pen!” Spritz will be shown at The Royal Winter Fair in early November and then will enter an extensive flush program to fulfill embryo interest and Picks of Flushes that will sell later this year.

EICHLERS MD BLANCHE EX-90

Housed at: Spungold Farm, Gettysburg, PA

”Blanche is an easy cow to work with, but she does have a mind of her own,” comments Deanna Bendig, who cares for Blanche along with her husband Dale. “If she wants to go, she will - with or without you! She can be a handful to lead at times. At home, she lives on a bedding pack with four other cows, and does like a pat on the head every so often.” Blanche is pregnant to Hard Core R. Rob Showtime and is due back in June. There are no plans to flush her at this time.

HIGHCROFT ABSOLUTE LILY

EX-94

Housed at: Eaton Holsteins, Marietta, NY

“She’s a tremendous everyday kind of cow. She never has a bad day and is a really good doer,” comments Aaron Eaton. “She loves her routine, so if something interrupts that routine, she’s strong-willed enough to let you know she’s crabby!” What’s next: Lily has been serviced to Unstopabull-Red. There’s been lots of embryo interest in her, so if she’s pregnant, she’ll enter IVF with a first mating to Unstopabull-Red.

CEDAR LANE FARM

PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE IN THE HILLS OF NEW JERSEY

T

hough perhaps not first to come to mind when someone mentions the dairy industry or the purebred dairy cattle business, the rolling hills of New Jersey have been home to a number of influential herds through the years. Several of those herds were established on the estates of wealthy families who had an interest in developing and improving a particular dairy breed. Cedar Lane Farm in Oldwick, NJ continues in that tradition for the Johnson family, whose predecessors founded the medical, health and consumer goods company, Johnson & Johnson. Home of the Milk & Honey prefix and herd, Cedar Lane is part of the family estate - a property that includes 2000 acres in west-central New Jersey, an hour west of New York City. J. Seward Johnson became interested in breeding Registered Holsteins as a result of research being done at the nearby New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station in conjunction with Rutgers University. In 1938, one research project resulted in the establishment of the first cooperative artificial breeding association for cattle in the country. With a prescient eye to the future, J. S. Johnson wholly supported the

organization by giving homebred and purchased bulls to the stud. That interest in propagating and marketing genetics continues at the farm today, where the 60-cow herd sports deep pedigrees, receives Gold Standard awards for its quality milk, and produces show winners on the state and national level. The herd is still predominantly Holstein, with a number of Red & Whites, a few Jerseys, and an occasional Brown Swiss adding color to the mix. The dairy farm, consisting of a 46-stall barn for the milking herd, and a greenhouse barn for recipients, dry cows, and springers, takes up just a portion of the property. Several family members have homes on the estate, and there are miles of trails throughout that cater to equestrian pursuits. The family business office is located above the tie-stall barn, so the herd sees regular visits from the Johnsons. Bill Taylor and Beth Roberts manage the herd, and work closely with Tucker Johnson in determining new animals to bring into the herd. Special family meetings are held after important

When they’re looking to buy, deep pedigrees, outstanding udders and feet & legs, and a strong maternal line are essential as they are always looking to be able to merchandise the offspring. longevity, that will last for 8-10 years and have multiple calves is a cornerstone goal of the program. That philosophy coupled with insistence on the very best care and dedication to cow comfort gives every herd member her best opportunity. “I’m a firm believer that environment and feed quality can bring out the potential in any cow,” observes Bill. That reasoning is bearing fruit in several different ways. In 2018, Cedar Lane was the #1 BAA herd in their region at 112.8% - an accomplishment that Beth says is very humbling when one considers the number of outstanding Holstein breeders in New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and West Virginia. More than 70 years after putting bulls into the country’s first AI stud, the Milk&Honey prefix still makes an appearance in sire catalogs most notable recently with Milk&Honey Destry Moses-Red, a proven bull at STgenetics, that carries a +2.93T number. Bill and Beth enjoy working with hightype cattle, and breed the cattle with that in mind. They utilize high type genomic young bulls when planning matings, but proven bulls are still an important part of the program as well, such as Dempsey, Doorman, Absolute, and Awesome for the Holsteins and Red & Whites; and Colton, Sultan, Joel, and Fireman for the Jerseys. As a result, the herd has received numerous All-NY and All-NJ awards and have had several All-American nominations in both the Holstein and Red & White

breeds. 2019 has yielded numerous champions for the Cedar Lane show string at regional and national shows: - Ashlyn Sanchez Sprinkles EX-94, Reserve Senior The Cedar Lane Farm crew at the 2019 Eastern States Exposition. & Reserve Grand Champion, Northeast Fall National Holstein Show & Reserve Senior & HM Grand Champion, New England Summer Show - Milk&Honey Talent Meg EX-94, Champion Bred & Owned, New England Summer Show (grandam of Milk&Honey Dm Madison) - Milk&Honey Dm Madison, 1st fall calf & Junior Champion, New England Summer Show, 1st fall calf & Reserve Junior Champion at the Northeast Fall National Show - now owned by Hullcrest, Conroy, Clark Valley, and London Dairy, IN, 5th at the International Holstein Show - Curr-Vale Abs Adored-Red EX-92, 1st 4-year-old, Senior & Reserve Grand Champion at the Northeast Spring National Holstein Show As one of 42 remaining dairy farms in the state, they try to be good neighbors and friends. The Johnsons are active conservationists, and strive to operate the 3,000 acre farm in a manner that is best for the land, cattle, and neighboring properties. With an eye to keeping

Beth Roberts and Bill Taylor with Judge David Crack at the New England Summer Holstein Show. breeder organizations active in the state, Cedar Lane still exhibits at smaller shows in New Jersey. They want to share knowledge with other herds and especially with junior members. “We’re competitive and like to win at the bigger shows, but we’ll always try to help others learn and succeed,” notes Beth. A dedication to helping youth is central to the vision shared by the Johnsons as well as Bill and Beth. “Whenever we can do something for the youth in the region,

we want to be involved,” states Beth. The farm regularly hosts FFA and 4-H judging events and showmanship clinics. They also oversee an intensive internship program. Applicants are chosen with great care, but then have a wonderful opportunity to gain an immense amount of knowledge through the operation. “Our interns become part of the family,” Beth says. “We make sure to include them in all facets of the operation; they’re here front and center when visitors come to the farm.” She proudly notes that former interns have gone on to successful careers in many industries.

in Marcellus, NY, where numerous champions and All-Americans were developed from the herd. In 2000, Bill received the Klussendorf Award at World Dairy Expo. “It’s very special to me that the previous award winners voted for me to join this exclusive club,” Bill relates. He’s recently been elected as President of the Klussendorf Society. After he left Sycamore Hill in 2004, he sold feed and did nutrition work before entering his role at Cedar Lane Farm.

There’s always plenty for Bill and Beth to tackle at Cedar Lane Farm - from managing the show cattle, overseeing the marketing of genetics, and the overall day-to-day challenges of staffing and chores. The herd is fed a basic TMR with a protein supplement with a goal to produce 80# of 4.0% buttermilk per cow per day. All the forage for the cattle is raised on the farm. During the summer, 1/3 of the dry matter forage comes from pasture as the cows go out to graze at night. Two or three months before the show season, the show cows get switched over to a custom, complete feed and hay ration overseen by their nutritionist, and are turned out on a separate pasture from the rest of the herd.

Beth grew up in New York on a Registered Holstein farm. She attended SUNYCobleskill, where she earned a degree in Ag Business and Animal Science. She participated in a German Exchange program in the late 1990s where she lived in Germany for a year and managed a large 600-cow dairy there. She returned to New York and started working for Blue Seal Nutrition, where she became one of their top salespersons. Bill encouraged Beth to apply for a position at Cedar Lane, where she was hired in 2012. They both have a love for showing cattle, and that’s the kind of cattle they like to work with on a daily basis. Many of the herd members are show winners themselves or are out of show-winning

dams. A part owner of Jacobs Sid Beauty EX-95, the 2015 All-American Junior 3-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion at World Dairy Expo, the herd sports several of her daughters, including those sired by Dempsey, Doorman, Windbrook, Diamondback, and Impression. Kingsway Doorman Andrea EX-91 sold from the herd last fall to Glamourview, under whose ownership she won the senior 2-year-old class at Expo. They still have a Dempsey summer yearling and a McGucci fall calf on the farm out of Andrea. Her +3.30T Callen son, Mr Andreas Anthem, is headed to AI. The couple relish their work and enjoy the synergy of their partnership. “We push each other, and it’s great to see how the herd and the farm has evolved over the past decade,” Beth says. They also enjoy working for the Johnson family, who are an active presence on the estate and around the farm. James Johnson, Tucker’s father and a well-known contemporary artist, comes to the barn and sketches the cows on a regular basis. Mrs. Johnson, who as a girl admired the rural landscape dotted with cows on pasture, tells people about the pride she has in her own herd today. Purebred herds established and maintained by wealthy owners have made an irreplaceable contribution to every dairy cattle breed in North America. The prefixes of these herds - Pabst, Montvic, Lippitt, Lee’s Hill, Vaucluse, McDonald, Romandale, to mention just a few - are speckled throughout the pedigrees of our modern-day cattle. The resources brought to bear by these owners on show ring competition and breed improvement have bettered every type of dairy cattle. In their quest to breed the best possible herd to stand in their barn and to graze on their pastures, the Johnsons of Cedar Lane Farm continue in that storied tradition. By Kathleen O’Keefe

Bill and Beth both bring suitable experience to their management positions. Bill was hired right out high school by George Morgan of Dreamstreet Holsteins located in Walton, NY, and he was a part of the crew working with the marquee show string that traveled major miles in those days. He credits Peter Heffering and his parents Ralph and Alice Taylor, as mentors from that era of his career. After 15 years at Dreamstreet, he moved to Sycamore Hill Jersey Farm 52 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall Special Edition 2019

10 GENER ATIONS TIMES TWO!

AYRSHIRE FAMILIES WRITING THE BREED HISTORY BOOK

I

n our Fall issue, we published a story about the 20th generation Excellent Holstein, and that got us thinking about the longest lines of Excellents in the other breeds. There were several outstanding Ayrshires in the show ring that caught our eye this fall, so we thought we’d explore that breed next. Ayrshires can count a line of 10 generations of Excellent, but the breed has two families with that claim to fame! Rooted in eastern Wisconsin, the first, and more populous line is the ‘D’ family that traces back to Will-Ayr’s Duchess EX-90. The first four generations of Excellent cows in this line carry the Will-Ayr’s prefix of the Willer family. Ross Westphalen of Chapel Hill Ayrshires owned Will-Ayr’s Dynamic long enough to get two daughters and the fifth generation Excellent, ChapelHill-Ayr’s Heligo Delet EX-91, was one of those heifers. Tim & Katie Busch of Grand-View Ayrshires in Cecil, Wisconsin always had a good deal of interest in the family. They had owned the 2nd generation cow, Will-Ayr’s Dizzy EX-90, a number of years earlier, and were quite familiar with the whole maternal line. When the Westphalens dispersed their herd, the Buschs bought Heligo Delet, who was scored VG-86 at the time. “We got her at a pretty reasonable price, as she was a bit backwards and was going to have a longer dry period,” remembers Tim. “We weren’t really focused on the

from anything related to her. Her EX-91 granddaughter, Old-N-Lazy Dream of a Diva, was the Intermediate Champion of the 2018 International Ayrshire Show.

A breeding to Woodland View Pru Olympic 2 resulted in Grand-View Oly 2 Diva EX-90, the only EX daughter of Delet. Diva produced over 205,000 lbs of milk and produced six natural daughters, of which four went Excellent and one Very Good. Diva scored Excellent on the same day as one of her daughters, so the Buschs jumped from five generations to seven generations of Excellents in one day. With four EX daughters, the number of possible offspring poised to continue the line certainly increased.

Dreamer’s Calimero daughter, GrandView HP Calimero Dane-ET is now scored EX-94 – the breed’s maximum score – so now the family has back-to-back EX-94 cows. Nominated All-American 5-Year-Old in 2017, Calimero Dane is now entering an IVF program with thoughts of an initial flush to De La Plaine Vicking.

Diva’s Forever Schoon MM Cornelius daughter, Grand-View Cornelius Drama EX-91, produced a Blackaddar B B Kellogg heifer that would go on to be arguably the most well-known cow at Grand-View. Grand-View BBBK Dreamer EX-94 5E has been twice nominated All-American in milking form, won the World Dairy Expo Ayrshire Futurity, has a top record of over 26,000M and close to 150,000 lbs lifetime, and she was named the Wisconsin Cow of the Year in 2016 in a recognition ceremony at World Dairy Expo.

And if excelling in all those areas wasn’t enough, Dreamer’s most impressive feat has been as a brood cow. Still alive at 13 years of age, she’s now a permanent dry donor. She’s sold embryos worldwide and has over 50 daughters around the globe in six different countries. Tim mentions that when international visitors Grand-View Calimera Dane EX-94 is a 9th generation Excellent for Tim & come to the farm during World Katie Busch. She is a full sister to the dam of Del Ray, one of the Ayrshire Dairy Expo, they are always interested in purchasing embryos breed's 10th generational Excellent cows. Photo provided. 58 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall Special Edition 2019

Grand-View Calimero Dea-ET EX-91 EX93-MS, a full sister to Dane, was the AllAmerican Junior 3-Year-Old in 2014, after winning her class and the Futurity at Expo. Her sister, Grand-View Diamond Burdette EX-91, Reserve All-American Junior 3-YearOld in 2012 also was a Futurity winner at Madison. A 9th generation Excellent, Dea looks like she may follow in the brood cow steps of her mother, Dreamer. Her Forever Schoon Predator daughter, GrandView Predator Del Ray-ET, scored EX-90 at 3-02 earlier this year, making her a 10th generation Excellent from this family. The next in line at Grand-View? Del Ray has an April 2018 B-King daughter due in April, so that is probably the next potential EX for the Buschs. “The family breeds very consistently. I watch the components a bit, but they throw really good udders and really correct feet and legs. I think about 40% of our herd traces to the family at this time,” notes Tim about his thoughts on the family in his 45-cow herd. That consistency is what attracted Mary Mackinson Faber of Mackinson Dairy in Pontiac, IL to the ‘D’ family initially. Well, to be honest, she admits her initial purchase was a bit serendipitous, but once involved, they haven’t looked back! “I went solo to the 2007 National Ayrshire Convention in

at the 2019 IL State Fair, and placed 7th in the biggest class at the International Ayrshire Show in Madison. The potential 11th generation EX at Mackinson Dairy may not be long in coming, as a Reagan daughter of Predator Dazzle recently scored VG-85 as a summer junior 2-year-old. Whether she is the first 11th generation Excellent or not doesn’t seem to matter much to the Mackinsons. They’re not in a ‘space race’ with Buschs or anyone else to have the first; they just really enjoy working with the family. “They’re good looking cows that milk well, have some stature and good udders,” is the consensus from Matt Mackinson. For the other 10-generation Excellent Ayrshire family – which was actually the first family to 10 generations - we turn our gaze east to Perry, Michigan, home of Charles Sayles and his Hawksfield Ayrshires. Named the 2019 Master Breeder by the American Ayrshire Breeders Association, Charlie is legendary among breed enthusiasts for his encyclopedic knowledge of Ayrshire pedigrees. Hawksfield March B Bronara made history in April 2017 scoring EX-90 as a 4-year-old and becoming the first 10th generation EX for the breed. B Bronara fulfilled the promise of a purchase Charlie made 26 years earlier when he purchased a dry cow by the name of Englan Royal Command Bud at below market price. "She was 88 at the time and I didn't realize that she had four EX dams behind her," remarked Charlie. Under his care, she achieved the then-possible score of EX-95 3E. "I had wanted into this cow family for nearly 20 years before it she came along. I had no clue what would come of it, but had just hoped it would improve the genetics," Charlie said. "Instead it changed the herd beyond my wildest dreams." A mating of Bud x Desblay Rebel Willy created one of the finest Ayrshire cows in history, Hawksfield Bronara-ET EX-94 4E, who lived to over 20 years of age. Nominated All-American Aged Cow in 2001, Bronara also received the Living

Lifetime Production Award in leading the breed with her astounding totals: 352,302M 4.3% 15,073F 3.4% 11,824P. Bronara was one of four Excellent maternal sisters and as a 6th generation EX group they produced nearly 900,000 lbs of milk in their careers at Hawksfield. Charlie sold some embryos to the UK, where a Trident daughter scored EX-93 and has established another line of EX cows in England. Hawksfield Boomer Bronara EX-92, a Mackayr Bonny’s Boomer daughter of Bronara, was next in line as the 7th generation EX. She was nominated AllAmerican Aged Cow in 2005 and her Maple-Dell Avenger Sarge daughter, Hawksfield Song Bronara-ET at EX-91 2E became the 8th generation EX. By this time, Charlie had slowed down somewhat in flushing his cows, and there were fewer daughters of each cow to continue the line, but a natural daughter of Song Bronara by Palmyra Raven Billick kept history marching forward. Hawksfield Bronara Rose More EX-90 had her first calf in September of 2012 by a homebred bull named Hawksfield Forward March. That heifer, Hawksfield March B Bronara, wrote a new chapter in Ayrshire history when she scored Excellent in 2017.

And here we circle back to Grand-View Ayrshires in Wisconsin. Tim Busch bought some Woodland View Pardner embryos from Charlie out of an EX-92 Red-Wagon Sharon’s Last daughter of Englan Royal Command Bud – the seminal purchase made by Charlie. One of those embryos turned into Hawksfield GVA Pardner Blue-ET EX-91 4E. Nominated as a summer yearling in 2010, Blue now has over 172,000M with a 4.3%, and is due again this fall as a 10-year-old. Her EX-94 Burdette daughter, Grand-View Burdette Burgandy, is an 8th generation EX in that branch of the family. Burgandy has a natural daughter by Family-Af-Ayr Doublwhammy that is now a bred heifer, and she also has four March 2019 daughters by Family-AfAyr Distinction that could be the 9th generation EX Bronaras at Grand-View. It seems fitting that these two families co-exist in the same barn and look to continue to set Ayrshire breed history into the future!

“The Bronaras really have good udders and good feet and legs. I protected the front-end width somewhat and they could lack a bit of capacity as young cows, but the family always had high components and they matured into really good older cows,” assesses Charlie. B Bronara has a 2-yearold Maple-Dell Burdette Dempsey daughter milking in another herd, so the line has potential to keep adding to its total. Charlie quit milking his 40-cow 50/50 Holstein and Ayrshire herd last year. He continues to raise some calves and heifers on his central

Focus on

FAMILY HILL CONNECTION CHILLI Family Hill Connection Chilli-ET EX-91% has produced several lines in the Jersey breed that are not only winning in the show ring, but topping the genetic lists as well!

I

t’s an unusual and special cow family that can make top-tier show winners, sale toppers, and also make bulls with enough numbers to enter AI, but that’s just what the Chilli branch of the Circus family is doing in the Jersey breed! Family Hill Connection Chilli-ET EX-91% has laid the groundwork for an impressive and versatile group of cattle. Before Chilli, there was her dam, Pleasant Nook F Prize Circus EX-97%, twice named National Grand Champion (in 2003 and 2006). Ryan Lancaster and his wife, Freynie, originally part of the Lancaster Family Hill Jersey Farm, established their own Royalty Ridge herd in Tillamook, OR, and Circus was their foundation cow. Michael Heath, of Spring Valley Jerseys in Westminster, MD, was selecting for the Spring Valley 5th Edition sale after Circus claimed her first National Grand Champion title. He persuaded Ryan to consign a pick of flush from the cow. Ryan told Michael to choose the mating sire, and they settled on Giprat Belles Connection-ET, a Centurion son of the great show cow, Duncan Belle EXCAN, that was making nice young cows at the time. When the sale rolled around and the choice came on the block, Michael got aggravated when he didn’t think it was Chilli Premier Cinema-ET EX-93% made an impressive debut at the 2015 International Jersey Show, winning the Junior 3-Year-Old class and being named Reserve Intermediate & HM Grand Champion. 72 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall Special Edition 2019

bringing enough money. Though he hadn’t budgeted for the purchase, he ended up placing the final bid at $4,800, and brought in the Ehrhardt family of Baldwin, MD as his partners. The two Connection heifers were born in January 2005, Michael selected Chilli as his pick that spring, and she was delivered to the All-American Show that November, after which she made her ride home to Maryland. Her new owners liked her well enough, but she wasn’t a show heifer. When she got to be about seven months pregnant, though,

Michael remembers he started getting really excited about her. She calved in the spring of 2007 with a beautiful udder and went VG-89% at 2-06 that summer. After the fall campaign, she was nominated ABA All-American Senior 2-Year-Old. Fresh again as a senior 3-year-old and now scored EX-91%, Chilli made the trip to Madison and was to be sold there along with several other head owned by Nathan and Jenny Thomas, but she fell sick and had to be pulled from the sale. “That turned out to be a lot of good luck that

before settling into an outstanding production career with a top record of 26,500M 6.4% 1707F 3.7% 972P. Chilli was a long, stylish, silky cow with a great mammary system coupled with high components and impressive health traits. Michael always tried to protect her strength and width a bit with the mating sires he selected. While out in Richmond, Hirds Colton Dream-ET EX-94% was Grand Champion at the 2018 All American Utah attending the Jersey Show for Keightley-Core and Borba. She is one of three EX-94 daughters Spring National Holstein of Colton. Show, he took a short trip to Hawarden Jerseys she didn’t sell,” Michael acknowledges. in Idaho where he went to look at Once she didn’t sell, Michael and the milking daughters of Hawarden Impuls Ehrhardts decided to start flushing Chilli, Premier, and he admired the strength and one of the first interested parties and width that he saw in those young was Herbie Lutz, sire analyst for Select cows. Premier was at ABS and had some Sires. Herbie wanted a Forest Glen Avery genomic numbers, and even though Action son out of the cow, and so the Impuls wasn’t a bull Michael looked for mating was planned. The resulting bull in a sire stack, he thought the mating calf, Chillis Action Colton-ET (named might start to build some more numbers after Colton Thomas, Nathan and Jenny’s into the pedigree as Chilli had ‘tweener’ son) has been a successful type sire for numbers at the time. Select.

Colton’s type proof keeps improving as he adds daughters, and was at +2.2T on the August, 2019 run along with a 26.8 GJUI. He’s also been one of the leading sires of show winners for the last number of years – he was the Premier Sire at the 2018 All-American Jersey Show and breeders appreciate how the fancy heifers turn into good cows. One of his three EX-94% classified daughters, Hirds Colton Dream-ET, is the reigning National Champion and All American Lifetime Cheese Production Cow for owners Keightley-Core and Borba. His other two EX-94% daughters are BolleAcres Coltons Angel, owned by the Bollenbacher Family of Indiana, and SVHeaths Colton Monique, owned by Michael, Billy & Betty Heath and Allen Stiles, MD. Colton’s full brother, Chilli Chavez-ET, went to Semex where his type proof holds at +1.9T. The heifer from that flush, their full sister, Chilli Action CoutureET EX-92%, won the junior 2-year-old class at the Maryland State Fair in 2012,

Cinema calved as a junior 2-year-old and scored VG-89% a few months later. Ernie liked her, but admits she was a slower-maturing type of young cow. “She was the first Premier we ever had, and we came to learn they can be slower starters,” according to Ernie. She won her class at the Maryland State Fair, but then they took her home and put her on an IVF program. Michael suggested an early mating to TJF Visionary Regency, a high genomic sire, to try to keep escalating the numbers in the family. That flush resulted in Elliotts Regency Casino-ET, who is now in the Select Sires lineup with a plus production proof, +2.0T, 25.7 GJUI and +123 GJPI. He’s been a very popular sire with use worldwide, and the early reports of daughters calving in are quite positive. Cinema calved in again as a junior 3-yearold, and this time according to Ernie, she was ‘big-time’. She made a statement at Madison where she won the Junior 3-Year-Old class and was named Reserve Intermediate Champion and Honorable Mention Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo in 2015. Ernie and Terri were having a sale in September, 2016 and decided

The Premier calves were born in April, 2012 and one, Chilli Premier Cinema-ET, had quite high numbers at the time. She was consigned to the first Summer Hummer Sale in Wisconsin that June, and Michael called Ernie Kueffner and Terri Packard to encourage them to take a look at the calf. Ernie remembers being interested, but also having some reservations. “We weren’t really looking at genomic individuals at the time, but after talking with Michael, we took a look. She was a really pretty calf, but very young at the sale only two months old,” Ernie recalls. They ended placing the final bid of $9,500.

Healthline

EFFECTIVE DRY COW PROGRAMS KEEP MILK FLOWING Preventing a problem before it starts is a sure way to keep your dairy performing at an optimal level. This rings true during the dry period, when cows are at greater risk of developing new mastitis infections. The dry period, with the right dry-off program, can mitigate challenges to udder health. It is a time when secretory cells can be repaired and new ones built so that a cow’s full milk production can be obtained from a healthy gland. The goal of a dry-off program is to treat subclinical infections, reduce the risk of new infection and decrease the need for treatments during the next lactation. A prevention plan that includes dry cow protocols can also help prevent the spread of infection to other animals. KEEP COWS CLEAN AND DRY Make the management of dry cows and springing heifers a priority. Effective management and maintenance of dry cow pens are driven by animal need. Providing a clean environment for cows during the dry period can curtail new udder infections. Additionally, providing well-maintained calving or maternity areas is essential. Bacteria need a food source, such as manure, along with a moist, warm environment to thrive. This can be especially problematic during the heat of the summer, so it’s important to keep stalls clean and dry to diminish bacteria growth. Demand for space (animal stocking density) can be variable based on the effects of herd reproductive efficiency and the effects of seasonality on reproduction. Heat stress mitigation is a priority due to the potential negative effects on the cow and her calf. Provision for bedding management to maintain comfort and minimize pathogen exposure is a must. MAINTAIN IDEAL BODY CONDITION Cows are most likely to become over conditioned during the last three to four months of lactation, when milk production has decreased and caloric levels have not been reduced accordingly. Assigning a condition score when cows enter dry off allows your dairy to formulate a diet so she maintains a desirable body condition score (BCS) of 3.50 during dry off with a goal to minimize loss or gain of greater than 0.25 BCS during this time. Work with your veterinarian to assess cows’ BCS at dry off, identify gaps or weakness and build a protocol to monitor and assess the protocol outcomes. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION Mastitis is the most common reason antibiotics are administered on the dairy farm. Prevention is the best way to reduce the risk of antibiotic residue and to help you maximize milk quality on your farm. 76 « COWSMOPOLITAN Fall Special Edition 2019

At the last milking of lactation, use a product like Orbenin®-DC to treat existing intramammary infections. By treating contagious, mastitis-causing bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus agalactiae, Orbenin-DC helps put fresh cows into the milking string faster. Vaccinating during the dry cow period is another step By John Champagne, DVM, MPVM, you can take to protect cows Ruminant Technical Services Manager, from mastitis. Coliform mastitis Merck Animal Health vaccines, such as Bovilis® J-5, can help a cow mount an immune response to E. coli, a gram-negative bacteria. Vaccination should be administered at dry-off to prime the immune system. Three doses of Bovilis J-5 are recommended at four- to six-week intervals (Note: do not vaccinate within two weeks prior to calving). Being proactive by developing a prevention protocol can stop issues before they impact productivity on the dairy. It’s important to talk with your veterinarian to determine a protocol during dry off that is right for your operation. CRAIG LEAL, WITH HIS SONS (L-R) JOHN JR., JIMMY, AND JASON, HIS DAUGHTER JAMIE, AND HER HUSBAND, RON MEYER, AT LEAL RANCHES IN CORONA, CALIF.

“The first cows arrived at Leal Ranches on December 6, 1972 – long before the freeway was built just two blocks away, the thousands of houses that are on two sides, the intersection out front that is never quiet, and the big shopping centers that are on three corners. It has been a great place to dairy with my mom and dad, Elizabeth and John C., and my late brother Brad, and to raise four wonderful children, and to have so much fun breeding cows and race horses. “Over the years, especially here in the Chino Valley, I’ve seen a lot of trucks go onto dairies to take away the animals, and I knew some day my turn would come. Every dairyman is going to have that day eventually, and I’m glad I was alive to see it on August 12 this year. “Ron Pietersma and I have been friends for almost 50 years. My trust and respect for him has been there forever. Yet this is the first time we’ve done business together. Working with him and Tim Souza was super easy, because they do everything they say. They did a great job for us.” – Craig Leal & Family
