Embrace the Change!

s we were preparing this issue for print, I was flipping through the ad proofs and a headline on one of the ads caught my eye – “Great Things Never Come From Comfort Zones” – and that idea has been bouncing around in my head ever since. It just rings with truth, doesn’t it? Nothing ever really changes or grows in your life if you just stay in that safe, comfortable space. Stretching out and stepping into the unknown brings the possibilities for more fulfillment, adventure, and prosperity into your life. I’m kind of laughing at myself as I write this, because I am a 100% Comfort Zone Lover. I like to wrap that zone around me like a big puffy quilt on a couch in front of the fire with a whole menu of Netflix ready and waiting! Comfort zones do serve a purpose – they give us security and stability. But they’re also a short, slippery slope away from being a rut. And that’s where none of us wants to end up. 2020 definitely bounced most of us out of our comfort zones. We had to figure out how to help educate our kids through Zoom or Google docs; remember to always have a mask on hand when we got out of the car; how to market our cattle differently; to become more patient with the mail delivery; and maybe to substitute our holiday family visits with a Facetime or a phone call. Those things were hard, but we did it. It even became kind of normal. Now, I don’t want to get used to limiting visits to my parents, or wearing a mask the rest of my life, but it’s a useful snapshot that shows our remarkable human capability to change, adapt, and grow. When you think about it, most New Year’s Resolutions are just decisions to get out of our comfort zone. A change we make by choice, not because it’s

thrust upon us. Going to get in shape and lose weight by heading back to the gym? How do those first couple weeks feel? They suck. They’re hard. But it’s in that hard place – the huffing and puffing and the lactic acid buildup – where the changes in your body are happening for the better. Is your resolution about decluttering? It’s a lot of grindy work, but that calm feeling you have when the office is finally clean and the surfaces are clear…it’s heaven! Maybe you’re finally getting your financial house in order. It can be brutal looking honestly at all of your accounts and knowing exactly what you have and exactly what you owe, but there’s a liberation in not avoiding it any longer; in knowing the hard, truthful numbers. Then there’s a place to begin, a starting line for a better future. We’re thankful for those that pushed comfort zones aside this year and made the 2020 show season possible – for those that organized new events or moved traditional shows to new dates. Because of those actions, we’re able to bring you the 2020 All-American Holstein and Jersey Contests in this issue! There were a huge number of entries for both contests, and the quality was tremendous, even with the difficulties of the year. Please take some time to look through the contest pages and appreciate the incredible individuals from coast to coast that were nominated! Another big thank you to Vicki Fletcher and France Lemieux, who moved out of their comfort zones and organized the Canadian Champions Holstein competition this year while the AllCanadian contest is on hiatus. They wanted print recognition for the Canadian Champion nominees, and we’re delighted they chose Cowsmo to be that venue! We commend and

appreciate the many hours of hard work they put in to give the Canadian breeders a stage for their cattle this year – look for those pages in this issue as well! Two years ago, Julie & I took a chance and leapfrogged out of our comfort zones when we purchased Cowsmopolitan. We were scared, but so, so excited and it’s been an absolutely life-changing experience ever since. Those first months were a whirlwind and I’d be lying if I said we weren’t winging it a lot of the time! We’ve got a better grip now, and though there are still plenty of chaotic days, we find our challenge is to not sit in that comfort zone; to not get stuck in the rut of the same old, same old. With that in mind, we’ve got some special goals for 2021! We’re growing as a company and we’re going to be adding more talent to our staff. We’re always looking for more and better content for the magazine, and more and better event coverage out in the field. One of our biggest objectives for 2021 is adding another issue – one to be published in the mid- to late-summer. That makes eight issues per year now, which feels about right and doable to us – an issue to arrive in your mailbox about every six weeks year round. This wouldn’t be possible without the constant support of our advertisers and subscribers – and those that give positive feedback and constructive criticism – we’re so thankful for all of you. Here’s to 2021 and shrinking that comfort zone!

AN UNPRECEDENTED YEAR… BUT THE ALL-AMERICAN CONTESTS CONTINUE ON!

W

hen the COVID-19 pandemics restrictions landed like an anvil in mid-March, we were all just gearing up for the spring show season. As the cancellations piled up and scheduled events came off the calendar, the question we heard the most was “Is there going to be an All-American Contest this year?” We always answered in the affirmative while holding out hope that there would be some large, prominent Holstein shows held sometime, somewhere in 2020. There were days when that hope seemed faint, to be honest. But the resilience of dairy cattle breeders and show enthusiasts soon emerged, and 2020 saw a number of state and regional shows, as well as events that were national in scope. So it is with great excitement, and some relief, that we present to you the 2020 Holstein All-American Nominations! Since its inception by HolsteinWorld in 1922, the All-American contest has acknowledged the very best Holsteins presented in US show rings in any given year. As always, we tip our caps to those breeders, owners, caretakers, and exhibitors of these outstanding individuals. To be included in these pages indicates a dedication and a willingness to do the right things for your cattle, no matter how small the detail, day in and day out, year around.

The number of entries in this peculiar year was unbelievable! Without the dominant weight of placings at the traditional fall shows, exhibitors were more willing to participate in the process. Total entries numbered 265 – about 50 more than a typical year – with several classes garnering 18-20 entries. Overall, 48 different sires were represented by nominated individuals. In the sire race, Val-Bisson Doorman once again tops the list as the leading sire of All-American nominated animals with 15. He is followed by Dymentholm Mr Apples Avalanche and Braedale Goldwyn, both with 8 nominees. Mr D Apple Diamondback (6), Walnutlawn Solomon (5) and Gillette Windbrook (5) round out the leading sires. Elmvue Holsteins of Johnstown, NY led all exhibitors with 6 nominations solely owned. Several perennial exhibitor list leaders were right behind including Milksource of Kaukauna, WI with five solely owned and two partnership nominations; Duckett Holsteins of Rudolph, WI and Triple-T Holsteins of North Lewisburg, OH with four solely owned and two partnerships; Eaton Holsteins with eight nominations owned in partnership; and Kevin Doeberiener and Lindsay Bowen with five partnership nominations. Triple-T Holsteins bred seven nominees, and also garnered two group class nominations to head the breeder list in this year’s contest. Most of this year’s prominent Holstein shows opted for a large number of breeder judges who also extensively exhibit cattle themselves. In

the nominating committee meeting, judges who have bred or exhibited an animal entered in a particular class are asked to exit the room while the class is deliberated. With that in mind, a larger group of seven judges (as opposed to the typical five) were asked to be on the committee to ensure every class would have adequate discussion and evaluation. Justin Burdette, Keith Topp, Phil Topp, Chad Ryan, Michael Heath, Mike Berry, and Tyler Reynolds comprised the 2020 AllAmerican Nominating Committee. This group had judged and observed cattle at shows from east to west this year. As advised by Cowsmopolitan/HolsteinWorld in keeping with the contest criteria, the committee based their decisions on three factors: the show placings, the quality of the photo, and their own personal knowledge of the animals. A panel of 21 judges are selecting the final award winners by ballot. Judges are asked not to vote in classes where they have bred or own an animal. The votes will be tabulated with scores of seven points for 1st place votes, three for 2nd, and one for 3rd. The voting record of the judges will be posted on our website and the final numeric totals will determine the All-American, Reserve All-American and Honorable Mention designations. Winners of the contest will be published in the February 2021 issue. Once again for 2020, we want to thank everyone who makes the All-American contest possible. In fact, for 2020, let’s make that a double portion of gratitude for everyone who helped plan and run a show, got cattle on a trailer and into a show ring. Whether you were a judge, an exhibitor, an announcer, or kept the official book – we’re so grateful for all of your efforts to bring some normalcy to 2020 and to enable the All-American contest to thrive in a difficult year! THE

Black Diamond STORY

B

ehind every great show cow is a story. At the 2020 North American Open Dairy Cattle Show in Circleville, Ohio, K-Land Kilo Black Diamond EX-94 was crowned 1st aged cow, Senior Champion, Grand Champion and Best Udder of the Holstein Show. She is owned by Matt Lintvedt of Majestic View Genetics, Sun Prairie, WI, along with his mother Rhonda Hetts Shore, his father Gary Lintvedt, his aunt Randy Hetts Connery, and a friend Pamela Probert. This is Black Diamond’s story. When Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the 54th World Dairy Expo (WDE) the news was met with immense sadness. Matt Lintvedt and his family were particularly disappointed. Matt’s grandfather, the late Allen Hetts of Crescent Beauty Farms, Fort Atkinson, WI, is widely acknowledged as being primarily responsible for conceiving the idea of WDE and having it located in Madison, WI. Three generations of the Hetts family have exhibited cattle at WDE.

K-Land Kilo Black Diamond is surrounded by her owners, friends and the team of people who helped her on her way to becoming Grand Champion at the 2020 North American Open Holstein Show in Ohio in October. When a committed group of American dairy cattle exhibitors rallied and organized a new major fall show in Ohio, Matt Lintvedt and his various partners decided to take four Holsteins and one Jersey to the event. As the long day of Holstein showing in Ohio drew to a close, yells of jubilation and joy rang from ringside as the aged cow

K-Land Kilo Black Diamond was declared Grand Champion by Judge Mike Berry. It was an exciting and emotional win for Black Diamond’s owners, especially Matt Lintvedt, 41, whose passion for owning and showing dairy cattle pulses through his veins. Two days after Black Diamond’s victory, he posted on Facebook: “So we all show cows for different reasons…for me, it’s always been about family legacy. It’s never been about the money (we all know that these days), being in the photo (hate getting my picture taken) or popularity (self explanatory lol). My main goal was to have the Hetts family be the first three-generation family to exhibit Grand Champion at Madison.” Matt’s grandfather, Allen, captured the first Holstein Grand Championship at WDE in 1967 with Bayland Crescent Charmane EX-91. In 1974, Allen and wife Doris’s “kids” – Randy, Rhonda, Roy, Renee and Rodney

“Black Diamond has been special to our family since day one and still is. We are, and will always be, her biggest fans.” HAWVERMALE FAMILY

Black Diamond was Junior Champion of the 2015 International Junior Holstein Show as a Spring Yearling. – along with Matt’s Dad, were members of Felicia May Associates, the owners of that year’s WDE Grand Champion, Gene Acres Felicia May Fury EX-97. More recently, Rodney Hetts and Renee Hetts Beilke were partners in WDE’s 2019 Grand Champion, Butz-Butler Gold Barbara EX96-3E-GMD. While Black Diamond’s win did not come on the colored shavings at WDE, Matt knows his family is proud. On Facebook he wrote, “When I asked Mom, ‘What would Grandpa and Grandma think of this?’ Her response was, ‘Don’t worry, they are watching. My Dad would love Diamond, she is his kind.’” Black Diamond was bred by Kenny Krebs, K-Land Holsteins, Fredericksburg, OH. Her sire is K-Land Kilo, a Sanchez son from a VG-86 Dundee dam and then four EX dams behind that. Krebs collected semen on Kilo and there are reports his semen can still be found in some tanks in Ohio. Black Diamond’s mother is K-Land PacMac Kindle GP-83, who is sired by another K-Land bred Sanchez son. Kindle is from a VG-85 Dundee dam. Four of five of the next maternal dams are all EX. In addition to the double dose of Sanchez and Dundee in Black Diamond’s linebred pedigree, the 3rd dam on the sire side and the 5th dam on the dam’s side are the same cow, K-Land Kurtsie EX-90 by Lystel Leduc. In 2014, John and Donna Hawvermale, Wooster, OH, were looking for a show heifer for their daughter Ashley, a Junior Holstein member. They found Black Diamond in the calf hutches at K-Land Holsteins and took her home. As a spring calf that year, Black Diamond was 1st at the Mideast Summer National, 2nd at the International Junior Holstein Show, and 8th in the open WDE Show. In 2015, she was 1st spring yearling and Junior Champion at the International Junior Show for Ashley. As the Hawvermale

family says today, “Black Diamond has been special to our family since day one and still is. We are, and will always be, her biggest fans.” It was right after that WDE Junior Show win that Black Diamond was acquired by Scott Culbertson, Peak Genetics Inc. Sales Manager from Pine Island, MN, and Tom DeGroot of T & L Cattle Ltd., Rosedale, BC. As DeGroot recalls, “We bought her at Madison as a bred heifer. We had seen her pedigree. She was from a barnyard bull, but we thought what the heck, let’s buy her because we really liked her.” After placing 8th in WDE’s open show, Black Diamond moved to DeGroot’s farm. “She calved eight weeks early,” he says. “Then we got her ready for the 2016 British Columbia Spring Show in March. She was 1st junior 2-year-old and HM Intermediate Champion.” Matt Lintvedt picks up the story, “I was in the frozen food section of the grocery store and looking at Facebook. Scott Culbertson had put a picture of Black Diamond up from BC Spring Show. I called him. He said, ‘You’re not going to like her because she doesn’t have any pedigree.’ I said try me. Right after, I called Garry Vanderpost of Saskatchewan to get his opinion because he had led her in British Columbia. Garry was very positive and said it was worth

coming up and having a look at her. I got on a plane the next week to see her, along with Matt Smith of Smith-Crest Holsteins. Diamond was in a free-stall barn. She was underdeveloped, her feet were a mess and she was kind of round. But you could see that it was all there and it was just a matter of which way she was going to go. I had $20,000 in my pocket from my Mom and I, but Tom wanted $30,000. Tom and his wife Laury invited us in for supper. By the third bottle of wine I reached across the table and shook Tom’s hand and said, ‘I am going to buy the cow’. I gave him his price, not knowing how I was ever going to pay for her.” The next morning while at the Vancouver Airport, Matt Lintvedt’s Dad called and asked how the trip had gone. Matt shared the news and his dilemma of coming up with the rest of the money to pay for Black Diamond. A few minutes later, his Dad called back, “Well you never asked me to go in on one with you. I could do that if you need me.” After checking with his Mom to make sure she was OK partnering with her ex-husband, Matt accepted his Dad’s offer and the family partnership

“She almost shows herself. As soon as she gets in the ring her head goes up and it never comes down. Everybody that has ever worked with her says Diamond has such a kind personality. She doesn’t buck the system. She knows why she is there.” MATT LINTVEDT

was created. Pamela Probert (Matt Smith’s mother in-law) joined the group, and then in August 2020, Matt’s aunt Randy became a partner. Black Diamond remained in Canada for the Canadian National Convention Show in Alberta in April where she placed 2nd. She was then transported to Manitoba where her new owners would pick her up. As Matt Lintvedt and Matt Smith approached the Canadian border with truck and trailer, Lintvedt realized he had forgotten his passport. Lintvedt was forced to remain at the border crossing, while Smith retrieved the cow. Once Black Diamond’s paperwork was cleared, the two took her to Smith-Crest Holsteins,

Watertown, WI. In 2018, Black Diamond moved to her present home at MapleLeigh Futures, Delavan, WI, where she is under the care of the Schmaling family, with Tanner Schmaling and his wife Maddie in charge of her show preparation. Black Diamond finished her 2-year-old show season with 9th at WDE and 15th at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. After calving as a junior 3-year-old, she showed only once placing 7th at the 2017 Royal. Her owners decided then to leave her open and show her as a second calf 4-yearold. At over a year fresh, she was 2nd at Wisconsin Championship Show and the Midwest Spring Show and 8th at WDE. After calving again early in 2019, Black

Diamond was 2nd 5-year-old and HM Grand Champion at the Midwest Spring Show. That fall at WDE, she was second, HM Senior Champion and HM Grand Champion, winnings which propelled her to Reserve All-American 5-Year-Old. Black Diamond calved with her fourth calf in early 2020. In addition to being Grand in Ohio, she was 2nd aged cow and HM Senior Champion at Wisconsin Championship Show. These achievements have now earned Black Diamond her second straight All-American nomination, with further accolades no doubt coming her way. Tom DeGroot recalls telling Lintvedt the night he bought Black Diamond, “Be patient, she will do something great one day.” He was right. “Black Diamond hung around as a bridesmaid for awhile and then all of a sudden she looked incredible. That day in Ohio it was lights out. It was her and nobody else,” DeGroot says. Matt Lintvedt agrees. “Black Diamond was the closest thing to perfect on show day in Ohio as I have ever seen,” he says. “Skippy (leadsman Chad Ryan) could have led her with his pinky finger. She almost shows herself. As soon as she gets in the ring her head goes up and it never comes down. Everybody that has ever worked with her says Diamond has such a kind personality. She doesn’t buck the system. She knows why she is there.” What does Lintvedt love about Black Diamond? “Obviously her balance and mammary system,” he replies. “She exudes style. For me, she is dairy strength personified. She has a wide chest, big front-end, a long neck with a wide muzzle. She has a distinct chine, is hard on top and flat boned. And her udder, I don’t know that you could draw a better udder on a cow, especially with that many calves and at that age. Many people are comparing her to the True Type model.” He continues, “This cow’s future is ahead of her. The floor of her udder is still three inches above the hock. She has matured in all the right places and gotten more massive as she gets older. While her udder has gotten more volume, her attachments are as good as they have ever been. She already qualifies for the Lifetime Production Cow class.” Judge Chad Ryan selected Black Diamond, again led by Garry Vanderpost, as his HM Grand Champion at the 2019 International Holstein Show. Black Diamond has a lifetime total to date of 154,582M. At 4-09, she made 39,575M, 1506F, 1227P in 365 days. She has three daughters. Her first, that was born at DeGroot’s, is HAW066 Kilo of Cocaine VG87. Sired by Atwood, Cocaine is owned now by Dari Delite Farm, Sicamous, BC, is A2A2 and projected at 4-01 to 21,411M, 4.1F, 3.3P. Black Diamond’s second daughter, a Diamondback bred heifer, will freshen in early 2021. Her youngest, Miss Diamond Devotion ET, is sired by Doorman and was 9th spring calf at WDE in 2019. She is now owned by Esteban Posada of Mexico. A first choice female by Goldwyn from Black Diamond, due in December 2021 or March 2022, sold through the recent Music City Celebration IV Sale for $15,100 to Ben Verthein, Altura, MN. Black Diamond is due in February to a beef bull. Lintvedt explains, “Everything that we own we breed to two Holstein bulls and one beef bull all at the same time. My theory on this is if we want to make heifer calves we will make calves by IVF and flushing. Getting a cow pregnant is the most valuable thing we can have.” Until now, Lintvedt and his partners have not put any effort into doing IVF or ET on Black Diamond. “I firmly believe that the more you flush or IVF, the harder it is on the cow,” says Matt. “In our program, longevity is a big deal. So we try to get them bred back and then once they are pregnant we kind of leave them alone. We are going to give Black Diamond a year off, mainly because we don’t have many progeny from her. We are going to cross her with some of the prominent bulls like Goldwyn and Avalanche.” As he points out, “Black Diamond is one of the most famous outcross, show cows

in the world as she does not have any Goldwyn or Apple blood in her pedigree.” Matt continues, “I firmly believe our industry needs some fresh bloodlines. It is getting harder to breed and flush cows today without crossing over into the same cow families over and over again. Black Diamond brings a whole different approach to things and I am excited to see what her transmitting ability is as we use different bulls on her.” Black Diamond is not Matt Lintvedt’s first show winner. Matt is the Owner/ Managing Broker of Lintvedt Reality Group and specializes in working with private equity firms who make agriculture land investments. He also buys the majority of the replacement heifers for one of the largest dairy companies in North America. Matt started seriously investing in dairy cattle 14 years ago. At the 2006 Sale of Stars in Toronto, he and a partner were the contending bidders on Misty Springs Shottle Silk EX-90 12* when she sold as a calf. (Silk later became the number one LPI Cow in Canada and an All-American nominee.) Doug Blair of RockyMountain Holsteins in Alberta was sitting behind Matt at the sale. When Matt didn’t get Silk, Blair asked if he would be interested in buying some embryos from Silk’s dam, Willsona Freelance Sizzle VG-86 10*. Lintvedt and his partner agreed and bought five embryos. They got one bull and two heifers. The bull went to an A.I. stud, one heifer sold for $27,000 in the 2008 Global Glamour at Arethusa Sale, and part-interest in the third heifer sold to a group in England for $30,000. Matt and his partner took that money and bought B&L Dundee Samantha EX-94 who went on to be nominated for All-American

three times (2006-07-08) and All-Canadian once. “Samantha blew up in terms of marketability and embryo production and she is the reason we were able to buy all the other animals we have,” he says. Lintvedt has earned close to 70 AllAmerican and All-Canadian nominations between the Holstein, Red & White and Jersey animals he has owned. Other show winning Holsteins and R&Ws to appear under the Majestic View banner include Cavanaleck BG Bruin EX-94, Reserve AllAmerican 5-Year-Old 2017 and nominated All-American 2018-19; Miss Hot MamaRed EX-92, 2016 Holstein USA “Cow of the Year” and All-American R&W and Reserve All-Canadian B&W Milking Yearling 2015; full sisters Comestar Hodree Goldwyn EX-91, Reserve All-American Summer Yearling 2014, and Comestar Holiday Goldwyn VG-87, All-American and AllCanadian Summer Yearling 2016; Ms Apple Arrie EX-93, Reserve All-American Senior 2-Year-Old 2017; and Crystal-Star Avlnch Cali VG-87, Reserve All-American Fall Calf 2019 and nominated AllAmerican Milking Yearling 2020. Among his prize winning Jerseys are Leachland Kisses-K VG-88, HM All-American Milking Yearling 2019 and nominated now three years in a row. Lintvedt shows because he loves the “competition”. As he says, “Where else in the world does a normal person like me, or my partners, get to compete at the top level like this for something that is the best in the world?” More importantly though, Lintvedt says, “I do this for my parents. They have been in this business their whole lives and I have seen the enjoyment that Mom and Dad get from doing well at the shows and being around them. I take a lot of pleasure in seeing their excitement and happiness.” As Matt Lintvedt reflects on Black Diamond’s success, he says, “One thing I do really value is the fact that we have been able to do this all with family. And the other partners we have outside of family on other animals, they are like family. The business has gotten to be fun again.” By Bonnie Cooper Tanner Schmaling, owner of Maple-Leigh Futures, shares a special moment with Black Diamond after her win at the North American Open Dairy Show. AN EXTR A SPECIAL NOMINATION T

he All-American contest is a timehonored tradition approaching it’s 100th Anniversary. Unique stories emerge with each new announcement of nominations. This year’s contest holds a special place for the Demmer Family of Le-O-La Holsteins, with them earning their first homebred Open Holstein Nomination, Junior 3-Year-Old Le-O-La Arvis Lauralee (EX-91). What makes this nomination extra special is the fact that Lauralee traces her roots back to the Demmer family’s first Registered Holstein. Leo and Stella Demmer started farming in 1947 and moved to the farm where Rick and Kathy currently operate just south of Peosta, IA in 1956. Rick and his eight siblings began showing in 4-H at the Dubuque County Fair in 1964. This same year, Leo decided to start AI’ing his herd, which sparked an interest in genetics with Rick and some of his brothers. Rick and Kathy transitioned to ownership of the farm in 1998 where they built onto the original barn and in turn doubled their herd size over the next few years. Their focus continued to be developing deep pedigreed, high quality cattle that brought appeal to dairymen nationwide. As Rick began to develop their breeding program, he began to invest in new bloodlines and took their herd to a level

that gained interest by dairymen across the nation. Today, with the help from his sons, they continue to invest in and develop families they see could do well in the show ring while also bringing attention to the Type world. By the use of deep pedigrees and investment in high type sires, the Demmer family has established a herd they are all proud to work with every day. Today, Rick takes on the primary day to day operations at the farm. Kyle, their oldest son, works as a Farm Manager for GenoSource, a 2,800 cow dairy based out of Blairstown, IA. Riley, their second oldest son, works for Eastern Iowa Dairy Systems helping other dairy farmers with the latest milking equipment technology available including robotic milkers. Royce works as a Sales & Service Representative for Select Sires Mid-America and travels all of Eastern Iowa working with both dairy and beef farms to advance their genetics. Their youngest son, Regan works with dairymen providing hoof trimming services throughout the Tri-State area. All four of the boys work on the farm when they can, assisting in daily chores, field work, herd health protocols, breeding decisions, registering calves and much more. Back to Lauralee ... In 1969, Rick’s father Leo, had the decision to either invest in his cattle or try to buy land around

the farm. With the prices at the time he thought investing in Registered Holsteins was going to be better in the long run. He purchased Oak-Valley Cedardale Lilly as a winter calf, the first Registered Holstein to call Le-O-La home. To this day, Lilly stands to be one of the most influential cows in the Demmer’s herd, with Lauralee tracing 13 generations back to Lilly! In 2020, Lauralee was the winning Junior 3-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion of the Midwest Fall National Holstein Show and the Iowa State Show. She also anchored the Demmer family’s Senior Best Three entry at both those shows, were they took first place. While Lauralee may be their first Nomination from this family, she is not the only standout. Some of Le-O-La’s best brood cows and show prospects have come from this line of cattle. Le-O-La Talent Libby (EX-94 96-MS) is a two-time All-Iowa winner as a Junior 3 & 5-Year-Old; Le-O-La Atwood Leanne (EX-93) was the All-Iowa Senior 2 and has thrown some pretty nice heifers calves as well; Le-O-La Atwood Lyndi (EX-92) has been at the top of her classes since she was a Senior 2-YearOld; Le-O-La Raider Lady (EX-92) was the All-Iowa Senior 2-Year-Old and Reserve Grand Champion at the Iowa State Fair in 1995; and, Le-O-La Christmas Lilly (EX-90) was a Gold Medal Dam and the first place Aged Cow & Reserve Grand Champion at the Waterloo Cattle Congress in the early ‘80s. “This entire maternal line has really given us some great opportunities and has developed into a show family we are proud of,” commented Rick. “It seems like every year we have at least one family member to develop well and I’m just proud our kids were able to experience success with them. I know my dad, Leo, would be proud.” Rick concludes, “It is really exciting to have reached this level of developing an All-American nominee. There is a special place in my heart for this cow family and Lauralee, especially since she traces back to the foundation of Le-O-La Holsteins that my parents started. It exhibits years of breeding and developing our cattle and herd.”

A CHALLENGING YEAR… FULL OF OUTSTANDING JERSEYS!

2

020 threw everyone a curveball – when we wrapped up the 2019 AllAmerican contests, we had no idea that holding the 2020 competitions might be in some doubt. Spring shows and many summer shows were canceled or postponed, but eventually, breeders and exhibitors went to work to put on several regional and national Jersey shows. Some of these were new shows – like The Jersey Event and the North American Open Jersey Show; some were in a new location like the Western National Jersey Show held in Tillamook, OR. In covering those shows, one thing was quite evident – 2020 may have messed with the calendar, but it did not make one bit of difference in the quality of cattle exhibited at these events! From coast to coast, the Jersey breeders brought out their best, and the shows were simply outstanding.

This year saw another increase in entries and most notably, the impressive depth of entries in many classes. Our nominating committee met in person in December and carried out thoughtful, professional deliberation for each class. Seven judges comprised the 2000 AllAmerican Nominating committee: Justin Burdette, Keith Topp, Phil Topp, Chad Ryan, Michael Heath, Mike Berry, and Tyler Reynolds. This group had judged and observed cattle at shows from east to west this year, and also made the nomination selections for the Junior All-American Jersey contest that will be featured in our Early Spring 2021 issue. As advised by Cowsmopolitan

in keeping with the contest criteria, the committee based their decisions on three factors: the show placings, the quality of the photo, and their own personal knowledge of the animals. It’s always interesting tabulating the leading sires, exhibitors and breeders with the intention of respecting those who excel in the show ring year-in and year-out, and also to recognize and call attention to the new influencers in the breed. Looking over the sires for the 2020 contest, we see a changing of the guard, for this year at least. Sires like Tequila and Premier that have numerous All-Americans to their credit may be entering the final turn of their careers, as we see a new crew at the top of the list. Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry-ET narrowly claimed the first spot with 12 nominated individuals, followed closely by Sunset Canyon Andreas with 11. Next are Chilli Action Colton-ET (9); then Guimo Joel and Tower Vue Prime Tequila-ET, both with six. Misty Meadow Dairy of Tillamook, OR has entered the show circuit in a big way in the last couple of years, and they garnered 13 All-American nominations, all solely owned, in 2020 to top the exhibitor’s list. Vierra Dairy of Hilmar, CA slotted into the second spot with ten nominations. They were followed by Ratliff Jerseys of Garnett, KS and the Budjon-Vail

partnership of Lomira, WI – both with six each. Ratliff Jerseys captured the Premier Breeder banner at the 2020 AllAmerican Jersey Show and they also top our list of breeder nominations with seven individuals that carry the Ratliff prefix along with one group nomination. Arethusa Farm of Litchfield, CT and Big Guns Cattle Co. of Newville, PA follow with four each. A panel of 17 judges are selecting the final award winners by ballot. Winners of the contest will be published in the Early Spring 2021 issue to be published in February. Thank you so much to everyone that made the shows possible in 2020! Your efforts in organizing and exhibiting make the following pages possible – and here’s to a much more normal 2021! By Kathleen O’Keefe

In this past year full of uncertainty, we felt it was very important to still have a contest to showcase Canadian Genetics, and provide a stage to the hard working breeders and exhibitor’s across the country to promote their animals. With the year the way that it was, we didn’t want to leave anyone behind; and made it possible for all to participate in this contest. We would like to thank the breeders and exhibitors for trusting us with their entries (198), this confirmed by the number of registrations. A big thank you to our panel of judges! Congratulations to all the Nominees!

THE BOB HAEGER STORY

f you think that Brookview Tony Charity was the “be all and end all” of Holstein show cows, you had better take another look. It might come as a surprise that there was an Illinois cow as renowned in her era as Charity was in hers. In fact, in the early years of the 20th century this cow, who went by the name Minerva Beets, set a record that Charity, despite her best efforts, failed to equal. Brookview Tony Charity was U.S. national champion (if a win at Madison counts as such) four times. She won the supreme award at Madison in 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1987. But she’ll have to stand down to Minerva Beets who was grand champion at the National Dairy Show on five occasions, in 1914, 1916, 1917, 1918 and 1919. If there were a Mount Rushmore for Holstein showmen the first face would no doubt belong to Robert E. Haeger who happened to be Minerva’s owner. And at the end of the line, probably, would be a likeness of David John Brown. In an 18-year period (1986 to 2004) “Brownie” won a total of 92 All-American and AllCanadian awards, a record that has yet to be matched. In Bob Haeger’s day there was no such thing as an All-American contest. Conformational superiority, in the United States at least, was measured by success at the National Dairy Show. At this exhibition Haeger put all others to shame, winning nine grand championships in the eleven years from

1909 to 1919. These nine purples were a record in the history of the show. Minerva Beets, as already mentioned, was Grand Champion five times, while Paul Calamo Korndyke pulled down the National’s top prize in three consecutive years, a record that was not duplicated until 1928 when Sir Fobes Ormsby Hengerveld came along. Incidentally, the latter matched Minerva’s record when he won his fifth National Grand Championship in 1930. Robert E. Haeger was born at Algonquin, Illinois on May 5, 1875. He grew up in a Holstein atmosphere. R.W. Haeger, his father, bought his first Holsteins in the year after his son’s birth, purchasing some purebreds from one of George E. Brown’s importations in the neighboring town of Elgin. When he was eight years old, young Bob started out on the fair circuit with his father, never missing a year from 1883 to 1894. After some years as a professional baseball player – a newspaper of the time called him a “red-headed firebrand of a pitcher”, he returned to the home farm, put together a herd of show cows, and for a dozen years the Haeger herd burned up the big-time show circuits. Bob Haeger made his first appearance at the National Dairy Show in 1909, coming away with two blue ribbons. In breeders’ minds, this 1909 event established the National as a permanent institution and the American nation’s most

MINERVA BEETS Bred by W.B. Barney, Hampton, Iowa and born in 1905, she went back to Netherland Prince on her sire’s side.

Paul Calamo Korndyke was purchased by Haeger in E.A. Vandervoort’s dispersal in 1912. In the same year he started his three-year reign as National Dairy Show grand champion, which made his $250.00 purchase price seem a bargain.

prestigious. It enjoyed patronage from across the United States and Canada and as time progressed, the honor of a win at the National was considered the fitting climax of a successful show season. Haeger again made his presence felt in 1912 having three firsts to his credit, this being the first of three consecutive Grand Championships for Paul Calamo Korndyke, whom he had purchased for $250.00 at the Vandervoort Disperal in 1912. Haeger caught the brass ring again in 1913. In a show with eleven exhibitors from six states, Haeger took thirteen out of a possible twenty first prizes as well as both Grand Championships, Paul Calamo Korndyke claiming his second purple and Crescent Beauty Butter Maid, showing as a 4-year-old, topping the female section. At the 1914 National, Haeger won both Grand Championships for the second time. The year marked the third and final championship for the veteran Paul Calamo Korndyke, a record that was not duplicated by any other

bull until 1928 when Sir Fobes Ormsby Hengerveld won his third National Grand Championship. This too, was the year the Minerva Beets started the string of championships that she continued up to and including the 1919 show, a record unapproached by any other female. No dairy show was held in 1915 on account of an outbreak of foot and mouth disease, but in the next year Haeger was again the big winner, exhibiting twelve first prize winners and winning the female Grand Championship with Minerva Beets. At the Nationals held at Columbus, Ohio in 1917 and 1918, “Minerva” continued her series of Grand Championships and Haeger, competing against the likes of Iowana, Carnation Farms and Chestnut & Sons, Kansas, won his fair share of blue ribbons, topping the get of sire class with a group by Paul Calamo Korndyke.

The Robert E. Haeger Memorial Trophy was awarded to the owner of the winning get of sire class at the National, beginning in 1933.

Dickinson & Son of Wisconsin were the leading winners at the 1919 National but were closely pressed by Haeger, whose Minerva Beets here closed her show ring career with her fifth grand championship. That 1919 exhibition was Haeger’s last appearance at the National Dairy Show.

Every cow in this picture was a Grand Champion and all were owned and exhibited by Robert E. Haeger. Left to right they are Minerva Beets, five time National Grand Champion; Aconeth Lady, Grand Champion Waterloo Dairy Cattle Congress, 1913; Lucy DeKol Wayne, Grand Champion Waterloo, 1914; and Crescent Beauty Butter Maid, Grand Champion at the National Dairy Show in 1913

Haeger and Mack were fixtures at every national sale event, East or West, until Kelley retired in 1920. Haeger, who at that point was probably the best-known auctioneer in the land, joined forces with W.L. Baird and Francis Darcey. The year 1926 marked the beginning of the annual National Blue Ribbon Sales under their management. On Haeger’s death, the firm of Baird & Darcey continued with these sales. As a show ring judge, Haeger officiated at most of the important shows in the United States and Canada. He also served as a member of the True Type Committee of the Holstein-Friesian Association of America which gave expression to the ideal Holstein type in creating models of the perfect cow and bull. As he passed his fifty-year mark, Haeger’s health deteriorated. He suffered from

severe arthritis attacks and in 1930 sustained a severely broken leg which failed to heal properly. Neuritis, angina pectoris and other complications hastened his end. Haeger’s courage and indomitable spirit were shown in 1931 when he went to Detroit for the Royal Brentwood Sale with one crutch and a cane. Although too crippled to work in the ring, he sold nearly the whole sale from a chair in the auctioneer’s box. He passed away a year later, on August 12, 1932. “Bob Haeger’s ready wit and keen humour brought sunshine into many a sale,” said his Holstein World obituary, “and brightened many a dark spot for countless friends. Bob Haeger believed that the way to have friends was to be one. He proved the soundness of this belief in his everyday life.” By Edward Y. Morwick

Haeger the Sales Manager Bob Haeger, although the winningest showman of his generation, in later years devoted most of his time to sales management. Having sold sales locally for several years, he entered the big time in 1908 by teaming up with Barney Kelley in the management of the C.F. Hunt sale at Liverpool, N.Y. The sale averaged $129.00 for 69 head with a $500.00 top which earned it prominent mention in the Holstein-Friesian World. J.E. “Gene” Mack joined Kelly and Haeger in 1910 and they became the most famous selling trio in all of Holstein history. Kelly,

CALF R AISER OR CALF R AISES? E

mily Shaw has done both! The 25 year old dairy enthusiast is originally from Pennsylvania but now resides in the sunny state of Florida. Emily grew up in youth dairy organizations and helped raise show calves for her family’s herd, Linden-Loch Holsteins. Along with her love for the dairy industry, Emily spent the rest of her free time playing an array of sports year round. As a dairy kid and athlete at the same time, she developed a passion for both. As a graduating senior from Pennsylvania State University in May 2017, she devised her idea for Dairy Girl Fitness. Combining her time spent in youth clubs and activities with a Bachelor’s degree in Agribusiness Management, Shaw shared that “she always knew she wanted to be an AGvocate and voice for the dairy industry”. Read on to learn more about Emily and her @DairyGirlFitness page!

Q&A With Dairy Girl Fitness! What is your connection to the dairy industry? Right now, I’m not actively on a dairy farm everyday or work within a direct dairy industry job. I’m a personal trainer, and tie into the dairy industry with my AGvocacy Both of my parents grew up on dairy farms, I still have multiple family members with operating dairy farms, my boyfriend’s family runs a dairy farm in Georgia, and we grew up raising show heifers at our house for Linden-Loch Holsteins. Through this, I was involved in our county and state 4-H, FFA and Junior Holstein Association. I participated in dairy judging, showing, dairy bowl, jeopardy, junior Holstein conventions, basically any event that gave me the opportunity to do more with cows! So now being further away from all of that, I share information on the dairy industry through social media and travel to events/shows when able. If I have the opportunity to attend a dairy cattle show or a dairy conference, you can find me there! How has your follower base/ audience grown?

“Our audience has taken a LONG time to build. I always have to explain that to people. When they see we have almost 100k followers they want to know how to do that. Our followers had to be earned over the past 6 years. We earn followers by being ourselves, Emily Shaw has combined her love of the fitness industry and her passion for agriculture in sharing the truth of the ag industry, a unique social media platform. and creating a fun space for people to talk ag. When people come to our page we want them to leave inspired. We have a good mix of followers that are involved in ag and many that are not involved in ag whatsoever!” How did you get started with Dairy Girl Fitness? What motivated you to start? I started Dairy Girl Fitness simply as an Instagram page in the spring of 2018, so I’ve been doing this coming up on 3 years this spring! Being active and dairy promotion have always been things I’ve been extremely passionate about, so I started thinking of the idea for Dairy Girl Fitness when I graduated from Penn State in May 2017 and was having trouble finding a full time job in dairy. I moved from Pennsylvania to Georgia right after graduation, and then we moved to Florida in March 2018. I couldn’t find a full time job that I loved, had a lot of free time, felt homesick and felt like I wasn’t making an impact in the dairy industry, so I decided to stop caring what others might think and created the Dairy Girl Fitness Instagram. My main reasons for starting Dairy Girl Fitness was to combine my love for health and the dairy industry into one thing. There are a lot of misconceptions out there about the dairy and animal ag industry, so I knew I wanted to use my voice to tell dairy’s story and share the REAL facts. I think a lot of people still have this very old school vision of what dairy farming and farmers look like, and so I want to help update dairy’s

HOW DO YOU RECOVER POST WORKOUT? I REFUEL WITH CHOCOLATE MILK Chocolate milk is one of my favorite things, especially used as a post workout recovery drink! Why? · Chocolate milk is a ~natural~ source of high quality protein to build and repair lean muscle mass · Has the right mix of protein and carbs (scientifically shown!) to refuel muscles and help them recover after a workout · Provides electrolytes (like calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium) to replenish important nutrients lost in sweat · AND IT TASTES DELICIOUS I love all kinds of chocolate milk, but if you’re in my home state of Pennsylvania and looking to support your local farmers and #ChoosePADairy you can look for Pennsylvania’s state code “42” on the milk bottle, and some will have the PA Preferred logo as well! Facebook post from Dairy Girl Fitness, December 7, 2020

look to an audience that usually doesn’t see anything about dairy or animal ag the fitness industry. Also in the fitness industry, there are a lot of big accounts, movies, and people who promote cutting animal products and dairy out of your diet if you want to be “really healthy.” I wanted to show people that you can still consume dairy and animal products, achieve the results you want, and feel amazing. And with tying fitness into my AGvocacy, I would say that this has influenced me to continuously talk even more about the nutrition and health benefits side of things with dairy and animal ag products. And with talking about the health benefits of dairy, I wanted to be able to “walk the walk” and have taken my own health and fitness goals more seriously to show you can DEFINITELY reach your goals while still consuming animal protein and other products. How has your audience grown and/or changed? Since starting, my following has grown to 18,000+ which is crazy to me! I would say I still have a really awesome mix of agriculture and health/fitness accounts that follow me, but I think I have gained even more of an audience from the health and fitness side of Instagram – which is important to me because again, these people usually don’t follow or see much information about the dairy and ag industry. What is your favorite part about AGvocacy? My favorite part about AGvocating is the

incredible relationships and experiences it has provided! I have gotten to meet really wonderful people, and travel to new places and conferences. It’s also extremely rewarding when I have someone from outside of the ag industry reach out to me and let me know they learned something new about the dairy industry from my page. I want to continue to show people that they don’t have to fit societal norms, they can go after whatever passions they have, that it’s important to share your story despite criticism, and they are WORTHY of amazing things in life. What is the biggest challenge you face? Biggest challenge would definitely be the comparison game! If you’re doing enough, not enough, doing it the wrong way, etc, etc, etc. That’s the double edged sword of social media! I’ve really tried to stay true to myself, be authentic, and use others as inspiration instead of comparison. And of course the random animal activists attacks aren’t super fun LOL, but they help boost engagement so WOOHOO! Office & Cybil: 920.465.3880

Jenny: 614.395.9823 jennythomas614@yahoo.com

What is your best advice to someone else starting a similar page? If you are involved in the animal agriculture industry in any type of way, don’t be afraid to speak up and talk about your life and experience! Our industry needs all of the voices it can get right now, because if we don’t tell our story, someone else will. You don’t have to follow a traditional route, and you don’t have to be directly tied to the dairy industry to still care about it! People love being able to connect with you about your similar interests, so it’s great and important to share those! Be honest, be authentic and remember…. “Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care” Check out Dairy Girl Fitness on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and at their website! 2020 HIGH R ANKING BAA LISTS The Holstein Breed Age Average (BAA%) value provides a way to compare the score of an animal (and herd average) to the average of the breed, taking into account age of the animal and stage of lactation. All animals receive an individual BAA value on herd classification report, and herds participating in the Classic or Standard options of the Holstein Classification program receive an overall BAA for the herd. For the purposes of these lists, if a herd classified twice in a year (between 1/1/2020 and 12/31/2020) and received an official herd BAA for both classifications, only the most recent BAA was used. To appear on these lists, a herd must have at least 10 cows included in the BAA calculation. In 2020, 947 herds had a BAA value eligible for inclusion in these lists. The average number of cows included in the BAA calculation for the entire group was 68, and the average BAA% was 107.2. Source: Holstein Association USA
