Thank Your Teams!

s I write this, the NBA playoffs are on the TV in the background, and my home state team - the Milwaukee Bucks - are battling hard to defend their 2021 NBA Championship title. I’m a big sports fan and follow our Wisconsinbased teams closely, including the Bucks. While putting professional athletes on a pedestal can be a tricky proposition, as great talent at playing a game does not guarantee a character worthy of admiration, there is one player that I continue to hold in high regard and that is Giannis Antetokounmpo, the star power forward for the Bucks.

For those of you that don’t follow basketball, Giannis was born in Greece to Nigerian parents. He was drafted by the Bucks as a very green player with lots of potential, and has played his entire career in Milwaukee. He has put in so, so much hard work and has fulfilled that potential with two NBA Most Valuable Player awards and last year, won a NBA Champion title with the team. From very, very humble roots in Greece, he now is one of the highest-paid players in the NBA. But in spite of all his basketball success and material riches, Giannis Antetokounmpo has remained one of the most down to earth personalities in the league. The one thing that often strikes me when I see him giving interviews to the media or at post-game press conferences is how he continually THANKS people all kinds of people in his life. He thanks his teammates, his coaches, the city of Milwaukee, the fans, the media. He thanks

God, his family - his wife, his brothers, his mother, his late father. He thanks the whole Milwaukee Bucks organization from the front office to the maintenance staff. He thanks the countries of Greece and Nigeria for supporting him. Take a minute to watch his acceptance speech for the 2018-19 NBA MVP award. It’s emotional and heartfelt, and it makes you realize just how many ‘teams’ we all have in our lives that hold us up.

I’m guilty of not always expressing gratitude out loud; of assuming people know how much I value their work, their support, their advice. But watching Giannis, who could take credit for singlehandedly bringing the highest success to his team, continually shout out his thanks to the people who touch his life, I’ve resolved to say it out loud and more often. We all have so many ‘teams’ that help us in our everyday life - our families, of course. Our employees or co-workers come to mind quickly as people we should thank. But then there are the people whose actions allow our lives to run a little more smoothly like the bus driver who always waits the extra few seconds for your one kid that can’t get out the door on time. Or the neighbor who always seems to be there when you need an extra hand running hay or grain wagons. Or the feed store clerk who always offers to carry the big dog food bag to the car for you. A word of sincere thanks can make their day.

I’ve tried to be more observant of the ‘teams’ I lean on without even realizing it, and I’m trying to let them know they matter to me. I live next door to a retired couple and they always ‘keep an eye on things’ when I’m traveling, which is often. It’s a comforting feeling knowing they are there in a pinch for anything on the home front. The UPS delivery guy always puts my boxes in a spot on the porch that won’t get rained on. These might seem like trivial things, but both keep my life from being more stressful, and so I’m grateful. So this is a perfect time for a shout out from my desk to you - readers, subscribers, advertisers, breed enthusiasts - thank you for supporting Cowsmopolitan and all of our endeavors! You make it all possible! Also, to all the people that work with us or for us during the year - our fulltime and part-time staffers to those we subcontract for show coverage and for writing content - thank you!! Again, we couldn’t do it without you! To our families who pick up the slack - you’re incredible! Julie has small kids at home and her family is invaluable in helping out while she is away. We lean on my family often for help with show coverage and they drive anywhere to sit down at the table to help. We are so fortunate with our ‘teams’ and we know it! Hope everyone is having a safe spring in the fields and on the farms - see you at ringside!

Kathleen

RED DIRT GENETICS

Big Dreams on the Great Plains!

t might be a ‘road less traveled’ for most in the purebred dairy industry, but for Abe and Katrina Cobb, the wide open spaces and red dirt of Oklahoma suits them and their future plans just right. The young couple, who describe themselves as ‘two small-time dairy farmers’, have been building on their dreams in Perkins, Oklahoma. The word is getting out about the Red Dirt herd Abe & Katrina have been named as the American Jersey Cattle Association Young Breeder award winners for 2022.

Childhood misadventures led both of them to appreciating the little brown cows. Abe Cobb is the Sooner State native, growing up in a family that is best known for fine Brown Swiss and Ayrshire cattle bred under the Cobblestone prefix. He started showing Brown Swiss, but didn’t enjoy the manhandling it took with the larger breed. As just a youngster, he bought a grade Jersey heifer at a sale barn and decided that was an easier go in the show ring. Katrina’s path to the Jersey breed runs along similar lines. Her parents, Mike & Robbie Watson, had a Holstein herd at their dairy operation in Decatur, Texas, and she ‘hated getting run over’ by the

larger heifers. Clifford Buchanan, a family friend who became a mentor, gave Katrina a Jersey calf - a twin to a bull. “She was the ugliest calf, but I dragged her to every show around,” remembers Katrina. Her mom, Robbie, actually had a background with Jerseys and loved showing, so she supported the endeavor.

Fast forward a few years and it seems Abe and Katrina Cobb and their Dachshunds, Abbie & Dinnozo, inevitable that Abe and Katrina met probably the most extroverted and famous members of Red Dirt! each other via the show ring. He was making a living as a fitter and Katrina by redoing the inside of the milking barn needed one for their string headed to the and built a small sand pack barn for the Texas State Fair. Abe actually couldn’t do it, show cows. Katrina’s father, Mike, passed but they kept in touch. When Katrina and her away in 2015, and her mom, Robbie, mom traveled to the All-American Show in moved to the area after selling the dairy Louisville in 2009, Abe was fitting for Ratliff in Texas. She has always loved showing, Jerseys - the very year Ratliff Price Alicia and was thrilled that Abe and Katrina EX-95% won her second of three National established their Red Dirt prefix and were Grand Champion titles. They started dating proving they could develop show cows. after that and never looked back. “Christy [Ratliff] said we’d end up together, and she In 2017, the same year they got married, they also built a show barn just the way was right!,” laughs Katrina. they wanted it. Katrina elaborates, “It was Abe returned home to the family farm kind of like an early inheritance for us. We and Katrina joined him there. In 2012, had traveled around a lot and saw what they purchased the 160-acre property we wanted to do and some things we from his parents, Abe and Trish Cobb. didn’t.” Abe agrees about the thought that They immediately started improvements went into their new tie-stall and box-stall

We made sure the cooling system was right for this climate. We liked a number of things we saw at River Valley, and much of it is really based off of Ratliff’s old tie-stall barn.” The herd consists of about 25-30 pasture cows and 10-12 show cows that have access to pasture paddocks. The young stock on the farm numbers around 100 head at any given time. The cows are milked in a double-4 herringbone parlor, while the original barn has been re-purposed into a sand pack barn with headlocks and more pasture paddock for the show heifers. “When we first decided to pursue our dream with show cattle and genetics, we thought we’d have to relocate to the upper Midwest somewhere, but now we’re really happy with our set up here,” relates Abe. “It does get hot in the summer, but the cows are outside for so much of the year, the weather is actually mostly an advantage.” A large number of their homebred herd traces back to Abe’s original sale barn Jersey. Those early Jerseys kept having heifers and Abe kept showing them. Clifford Buchanan - the same man who gave Katrina her first Jersey - kept an eye on Abe’s progress and then gave him some semen by Nabdon Master Patrick and

One of the resulting calves was Cobblestone David Flyer who eventually scored EX91% and was the dam of Abe’s first Junior All-American - Cobblestone Waiting To Fly {6}-ET EX-91% by Rapid Bay Just Wait. Abe flushed her to Elliotts Renaissance Deluxe and one of those daughters, Cobblestone Deluxe Foundation-ET EX-92% also had a fine career in the show ring being Reserve Junior All-American in 2008. Her EX-92% Tequila daughter, Red Dirt Tequila Frosted Glass-ET has a Premier daughter that is continuing the family tradition. Red Dirt Premier Frosting was Reserve AllAmerican Spring Calf in 2017 and is now Excellent. She has a Lolalala daughter, Red Dirt Lolalala Frosty VG-88% that placed third in her show ring debut in a nice junior 2-year-old class at the Southern Spring National Jersey Show in April. Frosty was also the Junior Champion at Southern National in 2021. A Chrome winter calf out of Frosted Glass herself, Red Dirt Chrome Fancy-ET, won the winter calf class at the 2022 Southern National.

“That whole family has flushed great and they really throw a pattern - pretty heads and beautiful frames. They’re big calves and aggressive eaters their whole life,” comments Random Luck Surprise Me EX-94% was Nominated All-American Aged Cow in Abe. “Every generation of that 2021 after a win at the Southern National and 3rd place finish in Louisville. family was a great reproductive

cow, which is just so important. We have a Trans Ova satellite center only three miles from us, but if they can’t get pregnant or flush, it’s so hard to build your herd. We have a full sister to Frosted Glass who is also EX-92% that had four natural heifer calves from four total units of semen that’s the kind of cow that helps you get ahead.” While the ‘F’ family keeps forging ahead, it’s two Wisconsin-bred cows with the Random Luck prefix that have brought home a big load of rosettes for the couple recently. Random Luck T Heather EX95% was Grand Champion at the 2022 Southern Spring National Show after winning the Lifetime Production Cow class. It was a repeat win for the eightyear-old Tequila daughter who has had six calves, as she also wore the Grand Champion sash in 2021 which kicked off a big year for Heather. 2021 culminated in a 2nd place finish in the Lifetime Production Cow class at Louisville on her way to Reserve All-American honors. Random Luck Surprise Me EX-94%, a Valentino daughter, won the aged cow class at the 2021 Southern National Show and placed third in the class at the All-American Show, which led to her All-American Aged Cow nomination last year. Bred by Lisa Caya, both cows originally stood in Rick ‘RT’ Thompson’s barn in Darlington, WI and the pair made up two-thirds of a senior best three group that was second at Louisville and also nominated for All-American last year. Abe and Katrina with On The Go Vindication IAmSoGood, their first EX-95% cow. “Heather and Surprise Me are just true RT cows - they just keep doing what they’re supposed to do,” praises Abe. Heather was the first one to make it to Red Dirt as RT sent her down with the “if you don’t like her send her back” guarantee, needless to say, Heather never left. Abe fell for Surprise Me when he stopped at the farm before Expo in 2017. “She was a late calving junior 2-year-old fresh one day and I knew I wanted to buy her,” recalls Abe. They ended up taking her home and had her on their program for three years prior to taking her to a show. “She looked nice last year at Louisville and we’re really excited about her returning there this year again as an aged cow,” says Abe. The latest cow to move south to Oklahoma is Random Luck Joel Applause VG-88%, purchased as a springer from the Spotlight Selections Online Sale in 2021. She calved in with a fancy Joel udder and stood 8th as a junior 2-year-old at Louisville, and the couple look forward to her future. “RT is awesome - he’s always been so supportive of us,” says Katrina with appreciation. One more young cow with lots of promise is Red-Dirt Comerica Boobers, a VG-89% junior 2-year-old that won her class at the recent Southern Spring National Show. Her dam, Billing Colton Bongo-ET EX-91%, is a maternal sister to Billings Impression of Booboo-ET EX-92%, who was the ABA All-American Junior 2-Year-Old in 2017, was purchased by Robbie and a 5-yearold has had three natural heifers calves. All of these cows and their families exemplify the kind of Jerseys the Cobbs like - cows with uphill run, open rib, proper rumps with great udders and correct feet and legs. They don’t worry too much about breeding for production. 10 « COWSMOPOLITAN Late Spring 2022

“If they’re the right kind, we can make them milk,” remarks Abe.

business, he always comes to the shows to help and hang out,” smiles Katrina.

Robbie, who has more limited mobility after a stroke in 2017, still plays an active role on the farm with heat detection and she keeps an eye on all the cows and heifers that are getting close to calving. Abe and Katrina appreciate her help as there is always plenty to be done on the farm. They usually have one full-time person working on the farm, but have been without an employee so far in 2022.

And hanging out at the shows is still the ‘vacation’ of choice for the couple. “It’s the only time we get off the farm,” according to Katrina. Their show circuit consists of the Southern National Show at Stillwater, OK; the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville, KY; World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI; and the All-American Show at Louisville. They always have an attractive display and lineup of cattle, and though they are wellknown, the most famous members of the crew may be their pair of extroverted Dachshunds, Abbie & Dinnozo!

A herd with small numbers needs to market genetics in order to make it, and that’s the rule at Red Dirt. “Heather will die here, but other than that, everything is for sale - especially heifers. They’re not our main focus here - we both like the cows so if someone asks a price on a heifer, they get a price,” emphasizes Katrina. They merchandise through Facebook and put animals on consignment sales, but also have developed a good private market for junior project animals - about five or six calves a year. They also have a good nurse cow and family cow market in their region. “It’s a very niche market, but when you can sell a cow that isn’t going to make it into the show string for $2,000-$2,500, that’s pretty good. Everything on the farm is broke to lead right out of the calf hutch, so we know those junior project animals and those cows going elsewhere are easy to handle,” explains Katrina. They’ve also developed an extensive herd bull market in Texas, so they keep all of the bulls at a 20-acre property about two miles from the home farm. “We can sell about every bull out of every show cow, so it’s worthwhile for us,” notes Abe. In addition to marketing from their herd, they also make extra income by boarding cattle. Their main customer is Melinda Rushing of the famed Lily Lane Guernseys in Yukon, OK, for whom they house about 25-30 head of Guernseys. “Melinda is good friends with my mom, Trish, and she comes to visit about once a week. She is fantastic to work with and lets us totally run the management aspect for her cattle,” says Abe. One other long-time boarding customer is Dustin Coppenbarger of Joplin, MO, who owns half of Random Luck Joel Applause. “Dustin has always been there - he helped us get established. I think we’ve boarded animals for him for about ten years. Even though he owns his own landscaping

Abe and Katrina volunteer their time to give dairy kids opportunities in the region. Abe attended Oklahoma State University and was a member of the judging team there, so they support OSU Dairy Club activities. They also help organize and run the Sooner State Dairy Show, an all-breeds junior show held in July each year. A bigger plan for down the line is to host a sale that would bring people to Oklahoma. “We’d love to have a sale, and we have a goal to have one in the next couple of years that will have an emphasis on the Jerseys in this region. It’ll be a nice event - we’ll have a party!,” promises Katrina. They aspire to have a National Grand Champion hail from the farm, and are striving everyday to better their herd. They both are looking forward to their upcoming trip to Portland, Oregon to accept the Young Breeders award at the National Jersey Convention - a wonderful honor recognizing the first decade spent building their dreams in the red dirt of Oklahoma!! WESTVALE-VIEW DAIRY & MOO-VILLE CREAMERY

G

“If it ’s not better, why bother! ”

ive a man enough tractor time and that leads to thinking time - and you’ll never know what he might come up with. While working the fields around his Nashville, Michigan dairy, Doug Westendorp noticed the amount of traffic on nearby state highway 66 that runs from south to north all the way through Michigan. It occurred to him that it was an ideal location for a farm store of some sort and the idea for what has become MooVille Creamery took root.

The farm’s adjacent location to the welltraveled route set the stage for what has become an expanding family business for the Westendorps. In a peaceful rural location next to the farm, the original MOO-ville location, which opened in 2005, offers homemade ice cream & dairy products, a gift shop, drive-thru, farm tours - both escorted and self-guided. In the busy summer season, they have a petting farm and play area as well as an outdoor eating area, and the family is continually improving the property. They now have three other retail locations throughout west-central Michigan and they sell their products in 140 other coffee shops and grocery stores and over 50 ice cream shops. That’s a pretty impressive dairy product ‘empire’ that really began back in 1992 when Doug and Louisa Westendorp, who both

28 « COWSMOPOLITAN Late Spring 2022

grew up on dairy farms, moved their young family to the current property. And when we say young family, we mean young - with six kids under the age of six! One ‘single’ - Carlyle; one set of twins - Eric and Troy; and one set of triplets - Levi, Tina and Brittany - made up the pack of kids that grew up with the Holstein herd at Westvale-View Dairy.

As the kids got older and all seemed to have some interest in the herd, the farm or working in the family business in some capacity, Doug and Louisa realized the business would have to expand in order to allow that to happen. They didn’t want to increase the herd size and they thought they would need to milk thousands of cows to support everyone, so they built the creamery in order to give all the kids a chance to find a role. And it worked! All the siblings are currently involved in the family enterprise in various positions: Carlyle is the crop and farm manager; Eric loves his job as the herd

manager; Troy is the ice cream/ creamery manager; Levi is the milk/creamery manager; Tina manages the four retail stores; and, Brittany organizes the tours. Doug and Louisa still oversee the entire operation, but they also can find the time to cuddle up to their 17 grandchildren. Originally, the family milked 80-90 cows in a double-8 parlor until they expanded and built a new six-row barn with four Lely A4 robots in 2012 (which they upgraded to A5 units in 2020). The entirely Holstein herd now consists of 230 milking cows and 250 heifers. Their impressive rolling herd average is 32,500M 4.1F% 3.1%P. All of that milk is utilized to make their Moo-Ville products - milk, ice cream, yogurt, cheese and butter. Currently, they

process 18,000 gallons of milk a week, and around 4,000 gallons of ice cream weekly in summertime (the busy season for ice cream!). The company sold 155,000 gallons of ice cream last year. The unique twist to their Holstein herd and their on-farm processing is that all their milk is A2A2. That A2 beta casein can make milk more digestible for those that have some distress when ingesting dairy products. Doug Westendorp thought it would be a good niche market to pursue and may get people who thought they were lactose intolerant back to drinking milk. “We’ve had a ton of people say that they can now drink our milk and enjoy our ice cream after years of avoiding dairy products,” says Levi Westendorp. The Holstein herd is now 100% A2A2 cows, but it was a long, tough process to get there. They had been breeding A2 bulls for seven years before that, and had tested the entire herd for A2 status. They sold off the A1 cows as they calved in and replaced them with A2 cows. Eric and Levi admit that they had to sell some really good cows for the change over and that was the hardest part, but by spring of 2020, they were fully A2A2. A walk through the Westvale-View herd finds cows that are well-balanced and milky with great udders and a calm temperament. That should be no surprise as that’s what the breeding goals are balanced cows that milk well and score

Good Plus or Very Good in their first lactations and move up to Very Good or Excellent scored cows as they mature. “We aren’t necessarily looking for the highest type or GTPI animal, but we’re looking to make a balanced cow that has a will to milk with solid type and index numbers,” notes Levi. “We look at cow families a lot more than we used to for bulls. If we don’t like the family, we don’t use them even if they are one of the higher GTPI or type families.” “We don’t have one certain cow that put us on the map, but everybody’s favorite cow was an Excellent Blitz that produced over 400,000 pounds of milk lifetime. We’ve had good luck with the Outside Wish, Cookiecutter Halo (especially the Habitan branch) and the Kings-Ransom Cleavage families. Those families fit our profile - cows with good type and numbers to go with an extreme will to milk,” elaborates Levi. “We don’t aim to make the highest GTPI bull mother or Madison show winner, but we like to have really good barn cows with some numbers. We just try to breed cows that make it fun to go to the barn.” Those criteria hold true when they are looking to add females to the herd. “Obviously, they have to be A2, which can be difficult when buying new animals. Then we look for cow families we like and big milk records. If they don’t milk, we will generally pass even if we like

everything else, and then lastly, they have to pass the eye test,” according to Levi. The milk cows stay in the barn, while all the other barns with dry cows and young stock have access to pasture. While they have built new barns for the cows, they remodeled the old milking barn to house the breeding age heifers. In addition to the herd and the creamery and retail shops, the family also farms 1000 acres, usually consisting of 200 acres of alfalfa, 350 acres of corn, 300 acres of beans and 150 acres of wheat. The cows are fed a ration of corn silage, haylage, ground dry corn, and a robot-fed pellet. All the feed for the cows is grown on the farm other than the pellets. They emphasize the production of high-quality forage and crops, and in 2020 they were named the BMR corn silage champion at World Dairy Expo. Producing quality products is the mission of the Westendorp family and their MooVille operation whether it’s foodstuff for the cows or dairy products to be sold on their shelves and loaded into their five delivery trucks. ‘If it’s not better, why bother’ neatly sums up their drive to make the best. In 2021, their MooVille chocolate ice cream took first place overall in the chocolate category at the North American Ice Cream Association Conference - beating out 125 other

Moo-Ville offers a full lineup of products at four different locations throughout Michigan and their brand can be found in over 140 coffee shops and 50 ice cream parlors. a relaxing day of rest with their families. Sunday is the biggest day for ice cream sales in the US, yet that is one area that they refuse to yield.

Yet, to this day, the family makes sure that they run the business and not have the business run them. Their creamery and retail locations are closed every Sunday so that the Westendorps and their employees can attend church and enjoy

The family is an enthusiastic advocate for agriculture, for the dairy industry and for the Holstein cow. A stop at the farm will always find one or more Westendorps willing to explain their processing of dairy products, expound on the value of

reaching out to a non-agriculture-based public, or happy to take a stroll through the barns to talk pedigrees and genetics. If you’re traveling near Grand Rapids or Lansing this summer, do yourself a favor and stop in to appreciate a family business based on their love of the dairy farm and their pursuit of constant improvement! A Visit with Illinois Milking Shorthorn Breeders

I

llinois will host the National Milking Shorthorn Convention this coming month and we took the opportunity to visit with several breeders throughout the state to learn more about their individual operations and breeding programs. HALPIN FARMS Four generations of the Halpin family own and operate the farm, located in Cullom. William and Julia were married in 1938 and received two bred heifers as a wedding present, starting the Milking Shorthorn tradition on the farm. Today, George, along with his children Mike and Amy, and grandkids (the 4th generation) operate the farm. The operation consists of 100 head milked at two local dairies - Mackinson Dairy and Erdman Dairy - with the calves, heifers and dry cows housed at the home farm. Halpins also crop an extensive amount of acres, keeping the family busy year-round. The breeding philosophy is straightforward - breed for type and longevity while emphasizing quality feet and legs and superior udders. There are a few main cow families that have excelled over the years. Halpins Mona-EXP (EX-91) is an Othello daughter

that was All-American Senior 2-YearOld and Reserve Grand Champion of the International Junior Show in 2002, and Reserve All-American and Reserve Intermediate Champion of the Open Show in 2003. Mona also was Grand Champion at Harrisburg and Louisville during those years. Numerous generations of “Monas” have gone on to compete in the showring, including her daughter Melody (EX-93) who was Reserve Grand Champion at Harrisburg and All-American 4-YearOld in 2008. Her daughter, Mona II (2E92), followed in her dam and grandam’s steps, earning banners at Harrisburg and Louisville and Reserve Grand Champion honors at Expo in 2013. Mona II is owned with Matt Mackinson. Another winning family is that of Halpins Ruthanne (2E-94). Ruthanne was Reserve Grand Champion at Louisville in 2014 and named Best Udder of the International Milking Shorthorn Show that year. She was also All-American 4-Year-Old in 2013 after winning Madison and named HM Grand Champion behind Mona II. Her son by Mudslinger, Halpins Muddy Rockstar, has been a very popular type sire over the last five years and was named Premier Sire of the Heifer Show at Madison in 2021. With the impressive families they are working with, it’s no surprise the Halpins have exhibited a Grand Champion four times both at Harrisburg and Louisville and have four Reserve Grand Champion banners from Madison, and countless championships from Illinois State Fair. They have earned over 50 All-American titles and 20 Reserve All-Americans. In 2021, they had the HM All-American Junior Best 3 group along with 4 Junior All-

American Nominations including Junior All-American Junior 2-Year-Old, Halpins Lapdog Misfit, owned by Mike’s sons Colt and Owen. MIKES-DAR FARM & DREAM CHASER GENETICS Dave and Betty Gregory bought their current farm in Harvard in 1986. The farm now has three generations involved - Dave & Betty, their sons Mike & Darrin, and Mike’s children, Colton & Danielle. The farm milks 65 cows. The farm started out being primarily registered Red & White Holsteins. Tim Baumgartner was their key mentor (and still is to this current day) on getting involved with type and showing competitively. The farm has had Red & White All-Americans in all classes. In 2005, Dave sent Mike to purchase their first Milking Shorthorn. Mike and Dave bought a just fresh 2-year-old and her polled calf, who they thought had potential down the road. That cow was North Star Now You See Stars (2E-95), who produced over 115,000 lbs milk, 4,856 lbs fat, and 3,406 lbs protein. She became the foundation cow and helped grow the herd to what it is today. The breeding philosophy is strongly based around type and strong milking components. Darrin married Katie Agnew of Mapleton Valley Farm, in 2018, and will move to Wisconsin to be apart of their herd. Mike Gregory and his significant other, Michelle Upchurch, started their own farm in 2021, Dream Chaser Genetics. Mike bought a 15 acre farm in Hebron, 15 minutes from the home farm. Here, MikeDar Farm’s and Dream Chaser Genetic’s show cows, heifers and marketable bulls

are housed. In their inaugural show year, they exhibited 4 All-Americans, 3 Reserve All-Americans, 1 HM All-American with 9 nominations total. Since 2019, they’ve had 2 Junior Champions (including in 2021), 1 Reserve Junior Champion and 1 HM Junior Champion at World Dairy Expo and Grand Champion at NAILE in 2020. They also bred and still own the top Proven PPR bull (+111), Mikes-Dar Titan ET, who has sired several All-American nominated daughters. He also ranks #1 for Milk and Protein and #2 for Fat. His dam is Vinra CD Trilium (4E-92), who made over 150,000 lbs. milk in 9 lactations and was a 2x Reserve Junior All-American. Between both farms, they currently have cow families that hold bloodlines going back to Stars, Palm Pixie, Cabernet, Rubens Roxy, Trilium, Christina, Clarification, Mix-P, Peri, Lady Luck, Zues Lala, Oakleigh, Caliente, O’Royce, O’Raely, Lime, Sahara, Stella 905, and many many more! Most importantly, they would like to dedicate this and everything to Dave & Betty Gregory. The next generations are living out their dreams and continue to build on solid cow families. They would also like to thank Jerry King, Kingsdale Farm, and all of their partners for trusting them and trusting the process. NEV’R IDLE FARM George Isom Baxter moved to a farm in south-central Illinois near Newman in 1908. His son Stanley started the current milking shorthorn herd in 1935. Continuing the herd was Stanley’s son, George, and in the 1950s milked up to 25 head . Today, the next two generations manage the farm: George’s son Mark, and Mark’s son, Matt, and Matt’s wife, Kristen. They have a cow-calf operation and milk their top show animals during show season. “Our breeding philosophy is to raise

the best show quality animals and also excellent meat quality when processed with our feeder calves,” said Matt. The Baxter’s favorite cow family is the Fairy’s Maid family. “My grandpa had almost a 100 animals from that family before he retired and we have continued with many more,” commented Matt. For the last 20 years since Matt has been involved, he has aimed for the best framed animals to continue building and breeding high quality show animals. And this philosophy has paid dividends. Numerous animals from the Fairy’s Maid family have been show winners at the state and national level. In 2017, B&B Fairy’s Magic, sired by Rockstar, was named Reserve All-American Winter Yearling. The following year, she was Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion at the Illinois State Fair, and placed second at World Dairy Expo, earning her another Reserve All-American title. In 2019, she earned yet another All-American Nomination after placing 4th at Expo and winning the Illinois State Fair. After an abbreviated show season in 2020, Magic still came away with an HM All-American title as well as a max score. One of Magic’s most promising daughters is Nevr Idle TikTok, sired by Triple Crown. She was HM Junior Champion at Louisville in and was Nominated All-American Winter Yearling in 2021. There are two other daughters and one granddaughter of Magic as well on the farm. TRIPLE S GENETICS Triple S Genetics started in 2001 as a 4-H project for Samantha, Savannah, Sadie, and Darren Ropp of Strawn. Originally, they started with Jerseys and in 2006, they branched out into the Milking Shorthorn breed with the help of George and Mike Halpin. When Samantha was in college and dating Josh Fairbanks, they also become involved with Holsteins and Red & Whites. In 2016, Samantha and Josh were married and the Fairholm prefix was created. In May 2021, Josh and Samantha welcomed their first child, Knox.

Sam, Darren, Josh and Knox with their first Illinois State Fair Grand Champion, Triple S Lad Laidbacknlazy-EXP. show ring. This is also true for the Jersey, Holstein, and Red & Whites, however we also use genomics to help make those breeding decisions as well,” commented Samantha. Halpins America was Triple S’s very first taste of success in the show ring. In 2006, she was Junior Champion of the Illinois State Fair Junior Show and went on to be 4th in the Open Show and 1st Junior at Madison. Since then, they have had numerous All-American nominations with 2021 being a highlight: 6 total nominations including 2 Reserve All-Americans, and the Unanimous All-American Junior Best 3 Females. The entire Triple-S Milking Shorthorn herd except for the one purchased animal goes back to Halpins Angel. She had four daughters, three of which they owned or showed. One of the current favorites is Triple S Lad Laidbacknlazy-EXP (EX-92 93-MS), who was their very first Grand Champion at Illinois State Fair and is a 2x All-American Nominee who is just fresh again with her 4th calf. As for the other breeds they are working with, cow families include: Silvermaple Damion Camomile (EX-95); All-American Ms-Aol Cntndr Revive-Red (EX-94); Big Guns Jamacia Vanilla (EX-95); and, Lochdale Shaquille Missy-Red (EX-93).

In total, there are 25 cows in the milking herd. The cows are milked in Iowa at Josh's aunt and uncle’s, Doug and Jody Fairbanks, Wapsi-Ana Dairy. There are currently four Milking Shorthorns consisting of 3 VG 2-year-olds and one max score 4-year-old Triple S Lad Laidbacknlazy-EXP. B&B Fairy’s Magic, HM All-American 4-Year-Old in 2020, Nominated 2019 and Reserve All-American in 2017 & 2018.

“Our goal with the Milking Shorthorns is showing, so we try to select bulls from cow families that have been successful in the

Triple S Genetics won the Junior Best 3 group at Expo and then went on to be name Unanimous All-American in 2021. COWSMOPOLITAN Late Spring 2022 » 41
