I
Hit The Road!
’m not going to lie. In the Cowsmopolitan universe, March can be a struggle. While most of the purebred industry has had a couple of quieter months in January and February, we’ve been working on some of our biggest issues of the year (hooray!) - and finishing up the work on four All-American contests. Julie & I love that work and we love the contests, but by the time we’re wrapping up the Spring issue, we’re starting to run a bit ragged. Since December, there have a lot of long days spent in the office looking at the computer screen, and though necessary, it can start to feel like a slog. Not the conversations with our advertisers or subscribers, but the actual work plugging away at the keyboard. It’s been that way for me for years working out of my home office. I love the flexibility of working from home, but sometimes it gets a bit isolated and that’s when I start flirting with burn out. I know you’re the same. The colder days and longer nights of winter can start to wear you down by March when you’re farming. Tractors that won’t start, hutches and pens that need cleaning, the leaking water cups, the torn curtains - it can get to be a grind. But I’ve got the answer and the medicine to cure those late winter doldrums: get out and hit the road! Leaving the familiar scenes and problems at home - even for an afternoon - is the best tonic when you’re feeling like the grind is getting you down. I recently was lucky enough to ride along with a couple of Canadian friends who were touring in the Upper Midwest. We made all kinds of stops - about half to operations I had visited before and about half to places that were new to me. Just getting out and seeing daughters of various bulls, having
conversations about breeding and management philosophies, looking at cattle being prepared for upcoming show and sales - there’s nothing like it to get your engine Spring Travels! Watch for our feature on Julie in “action” at the first show of the and enthusiasm Mooville Creamery / Westvale-View Dairy in year for the Cowsmopolitan crew. Photo © Mackenzie Yerian. revved up again! an upcoming issue! Not everyone can tour about for a couple of days like I did, but do what you can! Take the afternoon and go to a breed organization barn meeting, or take in that AI-sponsored lunch and hear the pitch about their bulls. Hop in the truck and go across the county line to that breeder’s place you’ve never stopped at, even though they’re not very far away. You’ll never know what you might learn from their operation or pick up from a comment they drop. Large or small, there’s still plenty of operations that are hidden gems. They might not be running the show the way you would, but we saw good heifers and good cows at every place we visited, whether they were milking 40 cows or 4,000. If nothing else, it breaks the work, work, work cycle we all fall victim to at times. Seeing a different facility or herd can help you look at your place and your cattle with fresh eyes. Social media helps keep us all connected and maybe we feel like we don’t need to visit physically anymore, but the physical visit and fellowship is good for us! It also pays to remember that everybody’s social media presence is curated. Don’t compare your everyday life at home to someone else’s ‘highlight’ reel - sometimes an in-person visit tells you the full story about that
sale heifer, bull daughters, or potential show cow. The 2022 sale and show season is underway and before we know it, the sudden rush of spring and early summer will be here. Take the opportunity now before the cropping season gets rolling in earnest to go someplace you’ve never been before - even if it’s just in the next county. We’d be remiss if we didn’t give one final shout out to everyone who entered one of our All-American contests - thank you, thank you, thank you! There would be no competitions without entries and this issue holds the final results. Congratulations to everyone who bred or exhibited an animal that is pictured on the pages - we know the hard work, the many, many miles and luck it takes to get one across the finish line - well done! With that said, we’re raring to go in 2022! We’ve got travel booked to Ohio, New York, Oklahoma, Maryland, Ontario, California, Wisconsin, Utah and more! See you at ringside - stop and say hello!

99TH ANNUAL HOLSTEIN CONTEST
I
Back on Track in 2021!
n our final wrap-up of the 2021 show season, we’re so pleased to present to you the winners of the 2021 All-American Holstein contest - the 99th annual competition since it’s inception in 1922! This year’s results had a more normal feel and process after the unsettled season of 2020, and we were all delighted to be back at the big fall shows this past year. In December, a committee of six judges deliberated over the entries in each class to select the six nominees they considered the best of each age group. Those nominees were published in the Late Winter 2022 issue of Cowsmopolitan. A ballot was then sent to a larger panel of 19 judges, who each placed a vote for first, second, and third in each class. (In classes where there was a potential conflict of interest for an individual judge, that person did not vote. As a result, point totals will vary from class to class.) Final results were totaled using a point system of with first place receiving seven points; second place three points; and third place one point. The complete All-American ballot with judges’ votes can be seen online at www.cowsmo.com under the All-American tab. The panel for the 2021 contest included: Mike Berry, Eddie Bue, David Crack, Tom

DeGroot, Dean Dohle, Mike Duckett, John Erbsen, Lynn Harbaugh, Yan Jacobs, Ryan Krohlow, Chris Lahmers, Pat Lundy, Chris McCullough, Callum McKinven, Mark Rueth, Chad Ryan, Jenny Thomas, Phil Topp, and Roger Turner. We thank them for their thoughtful consideration in awarding final year-end titles.
Lesperron Unix wins the AA crown with three All-American winners and two Reserve All-Americans to his credit, followed by Braedale Goldwyn, with two All-Americans and one Reserve AllAmerican. Farnear Delta-Lambda is the only other sire with two All-American winners tallied.
Fifteen All-American winners were unanimous choices (thirteen individuals and two groups) - quite a high number compared to most years: Reyncrest Dlambda Lit Up (Spring Calf ); KimballWay Gdwyn Monday (Spring Yearling); Milksource Unix Chassup (Fall Yearling); Rosemary Unix Goldie (Milking Yearling); Fraeland Chief Liberty (Summer Junior 2-Year-Old); Ladyrose Caught Your Eye (Junior 2-Year-Old); Wrightvale Doorman Livvy (Junior 3-Year-Old); Oak-Ridge-K Gchip Turbo (Senior 3-Year-Old); Oakfield Solom Footloose (4-Year-Old); Ms Beautys Black Velvet (5-Year-Old); Erbacres Snapple Shakira (Aged Cow); Farnear TBR Aria Adler (Lifetime Production Cow); Ferme Petitclerc (Junior Best Three); and Ferme Jacobs (Senior Best Three).
Milksource of Kaukauna, WI bred one AllAmerican and two Reserve All-American individuals while Jim Butler of Butlerview Farm in Chebanse, IL exhibited two All-Americans and two Reserve AllAmericans. Other breeders and exhibitors represented by multiple winners include Glamourview Farm, Duckett Holsteins, Ferme Jacobs, MB-Luckylady Farm, Ferme Blondin, Ferme Petitclerc, and Le-O-La Holsteins.
Like last year, the sire race was wide open, with 24 bulls represented as sires in the final tally of All-American or Reserve All-American award winners. Croteau
As always, we want to again express our sincere gratitude to everyone who enters the All-American contests and to everyone who studies the nominees and winners in the magazine. We are grateful for the feedback we receive every year - we consider every suggestion very seriously in our continuing quest to improve the contest. We’re looking forward to an even bigger and better competition in 2022 the 100th anniversary of the All-American Holstein contest!

17TH ANNUAL JERSEY CONTEST
W
A Real Thriller!
ith two dominant shows in the fall - one at Madison and one at Louisville - along with several very highquality regional shows, the final vote in the Jersey contest is always a thriller. This year proved no different as a number of the final class outcomes came down to the tally of the last vote or two. The photo finish aspect of this contest has a very different dynamic from the Holstein contest with that breed’s one dominant show at Madison carrying a lot of weight in the voting.
In December, a committee of five deliberated over the entries to select the six nominees for each class which were published in the Late Winter 2022 issue of Cowsmopolitan. A ballot was then sent to a larger panel of 18 judges, who each placed a vote for first, second, and third in each class. The panel for the 2021 contest included: Mike Berry, Pierre Boulet, Alta Mae Core, Brady Core, Louie Cozzitorto, Ted DeMent, Kevin Doeberiener, Michael Duckett, Micheal Heath, Ryan Krohlow, Jack Lomeo, Joe Nash, Terri Packard, Chris Reichard, Mark Rueth, Chad Ryan, Molly Sloan, and Keith Topp. We thank them for their expertise and deliberation in placing their votes on the ballot. 36 « COWSMOPOLITAN Spring 2022
In our final summary for the contest, we note that there were five unanimous AllAmerican choices: SVHeaths Kid Rock Jaden (Summer Yearling); Rivendale VIP Eloise (Junior 2-Year-Old); Pacific Edge Premier Diva (Senior 2-Year-Old); Bri-Lin Valson Spritz (Aged Cow); and Spring Valley Farm / Heath Jerseys with their Junior Best Three group.
Eighteen different bulls had daughters that were named All-American or Reserve All-American. Guimo Joel heads the list with two All-Americans and four Reserve All-Americans. Tower-Vue Prime Tequila, a former sire list champion, follows him with two All-Americans and three Reserves. Close on his heels is Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry with two All-Americans and two Reserve All-Americans. Other sires with multiple winners include Hawarden Impuls Premier, Ms Kathies Kid Rock, River Valley Venus VIP, and Chillis Action Colton. Vierra Dairy of Hilmar, CA capped off their extremely successful year with seven AllAmericans and one Reserve, which led the exhibitor count for this year’s contest.
They were followed by Misty Meadow Dairy of Tillamook, OR with two AllAmericans and one Reserve All-American. Both Milksource of Kaukauna, WI and the Budjon Farm/Peter Vail partnership of Lomira, WI exhibited one All-American and two Reserve. Looking at the breeder standings, Spring Valley / Heath bred three All-American winners (two individuals and one group). Arethusa Farm bred an All-American and two Reserve All-Americans (all in the individual classes), and Pacific-Edge bred an individual All-American winner and a group winner as well as a Reserve group winner. Ratliff Jerseys, Four-Hills, and Rivendale also had an All-American and Reserve All-American to their credit. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors noted in the following pages! We really appreciated seeing entries from farms that had not participated in the contest before, and the 2021 edition of the competition was the highest-quality and most competitive ever! We can’t wait for the 2022 lineup - see you at ringside!
Vierra Dairy Farm led an impressive campaign throughout all of 2021 and led the way in exhibiting the most All-American wins in this year’s contest.

ROBELLA HOLSTEINS F
Balance is Key!
or most dairy farms across the world, there comes a time when major succession decisions need to be made. And this was no different for the Lindenbach family of Robella Holsteins. Tough decisions needed to be made, but ultimately those choices have created opportunities that will carry the Robella herd into the future.
Located in Balgonie, SK, just east of Regina, the farm itself is a century old, but Robert and Ella Lindenbach didn’t start dairying until 1970, thus starting Robella. Their son, Reg and his wife Julie took over the farm in the 80’s and purchased the first Registered Holstein and now the next generation is taking over. Kenton and Alicia, along with their daughters Rylee and Addison, manage the dairy, while Braden, Cara and daughter Ella manage the grain operation. Over the last four decades, the family has continued to grow the herd, but the extensive labor involved with a tie-stall setup encouraged the family to consider their options. “The old facility was very hard to staff and keep things looking and running how we wanted,” remarked Kenton. While some young couples would forgo an expensive upgrade and just move on from the industry, the family instead 50 « COWSMOPOLITAN Spring 2022
decided to invest in their future and forge ahead in the Registered business. “We made the choice to go with robots as it allowed us to achieve consistency in milking reduce physical labor and increase the flexibility in our daily live,” said Kenton. A new barn was completed in February 2020 and features two DeLaval robots, sand freestall, perimeter feeding, an automated feed pusher and an alley vacuum scraper. “The transition was a larger challenge that we anticipated, both for cows and people,” said Kenton. “Initially we struggled to find our new management style, and the cows had some footing issue. Cows in heat and fetch cows also presented us with some challenge.” Now, with two years under their belt, the Robella crew has most of the kinks worked out. “We have clued into our new ways of managing the herd. The cows are settled in, and we now know how to manage cows in heat and foot problems in our facility,” commented Kenton. “We called a lot of our friends in the industry and took all the advice we could get along the way. As cows continue to calve back into the new barn, it gets a little easier every day and we can see we’re on the path to achieving our goals!”
Prior to the robot facility, Robella was milking around 60 head, and they knew they would need to grow their numbers for the new barn. “With the anticipation of moving into the new barn, we were in ‘growth’ mode for a long time,” said Kenton. “Now that we have the numbers we want and with the value of replacements decreasing, our breeding goals have changed over the past year.” The breeding program has always been forefront, and the addition of the robots has really allowed Kenton and Alicia to focus more specifically on the top 50% of the herd. These cows are bred using sexed semen, flushed and IVF’d, or the odd exception of using conventional semen with the hopes of breeding a bull for stud. The remaining cows are bred to beef, allowing them to keep their replacement numbers lower, manage the current feed shortage and increase revenue on all animals sold. “Ultimately our goal is to breed a moderate stature, high-producing, exceptionally uddered, balanced cow – the kind of cow that can perform in the show ring and in any dairymen’s barn. She’s the kind of cow I believe all dairy producers can appreciate,” Kenton remarked.
Ultimately our goal is to breed a moderate stature, high-producing, exceptionally uddered, balanced cow – the kind of cow that can perform in the show ring and in any dairymen’s barn. She’s the kind of cow I believe all dairy producers can appreciate.” KENTON LINDENBACH ON THE ROBELLA BREEDING PHILOSOPHY Today, the herd is meeting these goals, with a 40 kg (88 lb) average per cow with 4.35% fat and 3.3% protein. They have received the SCC award for the last 3 years for the province of Saskatchewan and average 65 SCC currently. They have 21 ME cows, 12 EX, 72 VG and 30 GP. Robella has focused on building their herd from foundation cow families from Glenridge, Vandy-K and Ells. With their focus on breeding from strong maternal lines, it’s no wonder they’ve been recognized for their efforts. In 2018, they were named Saskatchewan Holstein Branch Breeder of the Year in 2018, Premier Junior Breeder at the 2017 & 2019 BC Spring Shows and have received numerous All-American and All-Canadian nominations over the last decade. New additions to the herd trace back to EX-
97 Blexy, EX-95 Prude and Lone Pine Grandious Thunder (EX-95). Robella Sanchez Marabella (VG-89-3Y EX-MS) was a standout in the herd from the beginning. She had a best record over 20,000kg milk 3.8F 2.9P at 3-05. Her dam was Robella Reg Macy (EX-94 5*), Nominated All-Canadian 5-Year-Old in 2013, then two more VG dams. In 2016, Marabella was the winning Junior 2-Year-Old at the Calgary Spring Show and followed that up with a 3rd place finish and Best Bred & Owned award at World Dairy Expo. That earned her an All-American nomination and All-West honors. She would return to the ring in 2018, capturing Grand Champion honors at BC Spring Show, an event they traveled 18+ hours to. While Marabella was unfortunately lost shortly after, her six daughters sired by Sidekick, Tatoo and Jasper are all scored Very Good in their first lactations. Four are currently on the farm with exciting futures ahead of them and two of them are recently fresh on their second lactations awaiting the classifier.
In 2018, PDF Goldwyn Highball (EX-94-4E 7*) was named Saskatchewan Cow of the Year for Robella and partners Lampada Holsteins of Manitoba. She had two Superior Lactations with over 140,000kg milk lifetime and all 13 of her daughters were GP+ or higher, with 4 EX (2 @ EX-94) and 6 VG. She was All-West 4-Year-Old in 2012 and Nominated All-West Mature Cow in 2016. Robella Goldwyn Edgeley (EX-94-3E) is backed by an EX-90 5* Dundee, then VG-86-3Y 4* Gibson then EX-90 Leader tracing back to the Ells herd. Edgeley was the winning Senior 2-Year-Old class and named HM Grand Champion at the 2014 Manitoba Spring Show. She traveled to Madison and stood in the top half of a very competitive class, but she caught the eye of Ferme Petitclerc and traveled home to Quebec with them after the show. The following year, she was the winning Senior 3-Year-Old and Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Royal, securing a Reserve All-Canadian honor. She continued to do well for Petiticlerc, named HM All-Quebec Production Cow

To say I have it all figured out would be a lie. What I do know is that I have an amazing support system, especially my wife Alicia who keeps things running at the farm daily. in 2018 & 2019, and has four Superior Lactations. Of her first four classified daughters, three are VG. Robella added some color to their Holstein herd in 2018 with the addition of Coytee EW Strait Tequila Nite (EX-95-2E). She was Reserve Grand Champion at the Western Dairy Showcase that year and followed up that with a Grand Champion win in 2020 and Reserve Grand Champion honors this past year. She was nominated All-Canadian Mature Cow this past year as well. She has two VG daughters, and her Victorious Junior Calf was Junior Champion at the Westerner this year as well. While focusing on genetics and breeding a better cow are foremost, they are certainly not the only items keeping the Robella crew busy. Recently, the farm has been brokering cattle from surrounding dairies to ship mainly to the states, which
presents challenges along with unique opportunities. Kenton is also a sales rep for an AI company, which keeps him on the road a few days a week. “Running a farm, having a young family and working another job comes with many challenges,” Kenton remarked. “To say I have it all figured out would be a lie. What I do know is that I have an amazing support system, especially my wife Alicia who keeps things running at the farm daily. We also have a great team of employees, and we are learning the importance of balance.” Kenton also knows the importance of being active off the farm. He served on the Young Leader Advisory Committee for Holstein Canada and has judged provincial and 4-H shows in B.C., Alberta, and at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. He is also the Western Representative for the Show & Judging Committee for Holstein Canada. Additionally, he
is serving as one of the chairs of the National Convention Sale, which will be held in Saskatoon in April. “It’s exciting to be able to have an event so close to home,” Kenton said. “I believe Western hospitality is something we are so proud of and being able to showcase that and the quality cattle we have is pretty darn special! It will also be a change to just go three hours down the road for a show, versus 12 or more.” The robot facility was the first hurdle on a long road to a bright future for the Lindenbach family. With that successfully overcome, they look forward to the future of reaching their breeding and production goals. Kenton concludes, “We believe that the time will come when Robella has their first homebred EX-95 cow and a Master Breeder Shield.”

ALL-CANADIAN HOLSTEIN CONTEST 2021 Holstein Canada is proud to announce the winners in the 2021 All-Canadian Holstein and Red & White Holstein contests. This was the first year that Holstein Canada sponsored and organized the All-Canadian contest after taking it over from the Holstein Journal, who founded and conducted the competition from 1942 through 2019. Several enhancements and changes were made to the contest in 2021. All animals who showed at a Holstein Canada recognized show in Canada were eligible to enter. The Red & White contest was expanded to six classes (formerly four) and six nominees were now named in each class, giving more Red & White animals recognition. There was no Nominating Committee or nomination process. Instead, 20 judges were invited and charged with the responsibility of evaluating all the Holstein and Red & White entries submitted by exhibitors via the AssistExpo program and then casting their votes “online” for their top choices. Judges ranked animals in each class from first to sixth – first (All-Canadian), second (Reserve AllCanadian), third (HM), and four, five and six (nominated). Points were assigned for each vote ultimately determining the nominees and winners. No judge was permitted to vote in a class in which an animal he bred or owned was entered. JUDGES: Selecting the 2021 All-Canadian Holstein and Red & White nominees and winners were: Pierre Boulet, Montmagny, QC; Ricardo Boulet, Saint-François, QC; Daniel Brochu, Tingwick, QC; Brian Carscadden, Fergus, ON; Simon Cartier, Saint-Aimé, QC; Yvon Chabot, Victoriaville, QC; Don Chalack, Red Deer County, AB; Jean-Philippe Charest, Saint-Alexandre, QC; Dan Doner, Whitby, ON; Mike Farlinger, Morrisburg, ON; Dominic Fortier, Saint-Christophe-d’Arthabaska, QC; Steve Fraser, Fergus, ON; Markus Hehli, 56 « COWSMOPOLITAN Spring 2022
Rimbey, AB; Kevin Jacobs, Sainte-Brigittedes-Saults, QC; Thierry Jaton, Compton, QC; Kevin McGriskin, Melancthon, ON; Morgon McMillan, Hastings, ON; Brent Walker, Guelph, ON; Blair Weeks, Pleasant Valley, PE; and John Werry, Oshawa, ON. ENTRIES: Despite a challenging show season because of restrictions related to Covid-19, exhibitors were enthusiastic in their support of the 19 Holstein and six Red & White classes offered in the 2021 contests. The names of Holstein exhibitors who reside in seven Canadian provinces, 11 states of the United States, and three other foreign countries are found in the final list of All-Canadian winners and nominees. While no 4-H classes were held in 2021 because of the Covid-19 situation, plans are to resume these classes in 2022. ALL-CANADIAN HOLSTEIN CONTEST: A total of 206 entries were submitted (185 individuals and 21 groups), with entry numbers ranging from eight to 16 in each class. Forty-six different bulls sired a nominee in the Holstein classes. LEADING SIRE: In the Holstein competition, Croteau Lesperron Unix is the leading sire. His 11 nominated daughters, the most in the contest, captured two All-Canadian, two Reserve and one Honourable Mention award. Following closely behind in second place is Brenland Denver whose eight nominated daughters garnered two All-Canadian, one Reserve and three Honourable Mention prizes. LEADING BREEDER: In the Holstein contest, this year’s leading breeder is Ferme Jean-Paul Petitclerc & Fils Inc., Saint-Basile, QC. Their Petitclerc prefix appears on eight nominated animals, the most in the competition, and is carried by
two All-Canadian and two Reserve winners. Runner-up for leading breeder is Ferme Jacobs Inc., Cap-Sante, QC, whose Jacobs prefix can be found on seven individual nominees who won one All-Canadian, two Reserve and one HM designation. These two well-known Quebec breeders were also rewarded in the group classes as well, with Petitclerc having the All-Canadian Junior Breeder’s Herd and Jacobs the AllCanadian Breeder’s Herd. ALL-CANADIAN RED & WHITE CONTEST There were 54 entries in the competition. Class sizes ranged from seven to 13 animals. Sixteen different bulls sired the 36 nominees. LEADING SIRE: Mr Blondin Warrior-Red-ET, whose four nominated daughters seized two AllCanadian and two Reserve awards, is the leading sire among all R&W. Riverdown Unstopabull and Cycle McGucci Jordy-Red had the most nominated daughters in the contest with six apiece. “Unstopabull” takes second place in the sire race, however, with one All-Canadian, one Reserve and two HM to his credit. LEADING BREEDER: This year’s leading breeder of All-Canadian Red & Whites is Kozak Holsteins Ltd., New Sarepta, AB, whose Kozak prefix appears on one All-Canadian and one Reserve winner. Runner-up for Breeder is the Ferme Blondin, Saint-Placide, QC, which can be found on one All-Canadian and two other nominees. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF THE 2021 ALL-CANADIAN WINNERS! Holstein Canada wishes to recognize the outstanding contributions of Bonnie Cooper and France Lemieux for managing this contest. By Bonnie Cooper

Royal Agricultural Winter Fair 100th Anniversary By E. Y. Morwick
R
oyal Winter Fair. Three words immediately recognizable by livestock breeders from all corners of the globe and their full implication understood. The Royal Winter Fair, in Canada at least, is the ultimate arbiter of bovine pulchritude, a place of final judgments, and its red ribbon is coveted as is no others. Glamour! Here, it will be found in abundance, oozing from the very cracks of the paved aisles behind the cows. And oh those cows! There they stand, sleek as eels, with all the promise of a bright spring morning. They are their owners’ major accomplishment, his calling card, the best he has to offer. And today they are his declaration of battle. The Royal Winter Fair is held in November of each year at the Canadian National Exhibition grounds at Toronto, Ontario. It is devoted entirely to agriculture, lasts two weeks, and people come from all over the world to witness the finest livestock exhibition on the planet. The Royal was held for the first time in 1922 so this year marks its 100th
anniversary. Three years earlier, that would have been in 1919, the first steps were taken by representatives of various Canadian livestock organizations toward the holding of a major Canadian agricultural winter fair. For a number of years winter fairs, from the Prairie Provinces to the Maritimes, had materially contributed to the progress of the Canadian livestock industry. But these events by their very nature were limited in scope and power. Canadian stockmen longed for the day when a show similar in influence but greater in scope than the International Livestock Exposition held annually in Chicago would take place in Canada. It would bring to one central point for competition the best that Canadian showmen, breeders, fruit growers, gardeners and poultry fanciers had to offer. The Royal Winter Fair has been held every year since 1922 except for the six-year hiatus between years 1939 and 1945 when the Exhibition was canceled because of the demands of the Second World War when the buildings were required for the housing of Canadian infantrymen. The

In 1922 the Royal Winter Fair got off to a magnificent start, its many features combined into one colossal show that surpassed the expectations of even the most optimistic supporters. Spectators from the United States proclaimed it the best show of its kind that they had ever seen. The Holstein exhibitors excelled themselves and remarks were common to the effect that such uniformity and general levels of quality had rarely been seen. The senior sires were out in full force, with Rooker Canary Wayne, property of Dickie Bros., Truro, Nova Scotia, standing at the head of the mature bull class. He met defeat, however, for grand champion before the young Sir Romeo Mildred Colantha, a truly royal youngster. Judge

was D.C. Flatt, Hamilton, Ontario, who kept firmly in mind a certain type, from which his judgments seldom deviated. A line-up of aged cows in milk, which one reporter described as “sufficient to warm the cockles of the hearts of breed admirers”, was headed by Alfred Hulet’s Lady Norfolk Abbekerk, a Prince Colanthus Abbekerk daughter. The grand championship rosette, however, went to Fred Hilliker’s Butter Baroness Korndyke, winner in the aged dry class. The 1923 Royal Winter Fair was judged by James Rettie. In the 200-head exhibition, Rettie found his grand champion bull in Sir Francy Netherland Abbekerk, shown by C.W. Thurston & Sons and W.H. Rothwell, Regina, Saskatchewan. Sir Francy Mercena Burke quite easily led a class of five junior yearlings en route to junior championship honours. The aged cow class in milk was a disappointment. Haley & Lee had an easy winner in Delta Finderne, but there were many badlyshaped udders. From the mature dry cow class, easily the sensation of the Holstein exhibit, came the grand champion, McGhee Bros.’ Aaggie Sylvia. Newton

CLAQUATO FARMS All-American Tradition in the Great Northwest! W
ashington State has long been known as a prime place for milk production, but for the Young family owners and operators of Claquato Farm in Chehalis, WA - that history of dairying predates even Washington statehood! Their ancestors boarded a ship bound from Maine on April 15, 1865 to look for opportunity in what was then known as the Washington Territory. The Panama Canal had not yet been constructed, so that journey entailed sailing down around the southern tip of South America to go from the Atlantic to the Pacific - more than six months of sailing. It’s no surprise that when those forebears landed and settled in the Chehalis River Valley in 1867, they stayed put. The Young family continues to farm that land to this day - now with the 4th, 5th and 6th generations as a part of the operation. Kevin and Margaret Young - the 4th generation - started changing over the existing dairy herd from grade cattle to registered cattle, and applied for the Claquato prefix. That prefix - a local Indian term for ‘high ground’ as the farm sits on a hill - has been well-represented in the show ring and AllAmerican contests for the past couple of decades. The Youngs really enjoy showing,

but have never been afraid to let a good one go. Numerous Holsteins, Jerseys and Red & Whites carrying the Claquato prefix have championships and All-American and AllCanadian nominations for other owners. Presently the farm, home to a 210-head herd of registered Holsteins and Jerseys, is owned by The Young family was recognized as the Master Breeder at the 2022 Washington three brothers: Dusty, State Holstein Convention. Another homebred EX-94 cow that was well-known in the region was Claquato Goldwyn Regina EX-94 95-MS 4E, a four-time Grand Champion at the Washington State Show. Her dam - Cutmar Supersire Robinetta - was bred in Nova Scotia and was purchased as a young cow by Kevin from Mike Deaver who had spotted her at Harry Weier’s Dun-Did farm in Wisconsin. That three-year-old matured into an EX-95 cow with Dusty and Carol, front, with their kids Gary, Lauryn and Kinley. an EX-97 mammary system, and she too was a four-time Grand Champion at the state show. All Claquato. animals are pastured during the summer months. With that emphasis on high-type, great High-type is a priority for the Youngs, and they focus on pedigrees and matings that emphasize cow families, udders and feet and legs - both in the Holsteins and the Jerseys. Any animals they purchase also have to live up to that criteria. The results of that philosophy is evident from their most recent classification: 47 Jersey cows average 88.2 points, and 99 Holsteins average 85.9 points. Two cow families make up a large part of the Holstein herd. Claquato Armani Sun Daze EX-94 95-MS 2E is currently the highest scored cow in Washington, and completes twelve generations of VG & EX cows tracing back to the VT-Pond-View herd in Vermont by way of Canada. That one generation bred in Canada was the third dam of Sun Daze - Holywell-I Encore Staci, purchased by Kevin as a heifer on the 2001 Sale of Stars, who went on to become an Excellent cow. Sun Daze, bred and owned by Gary, Lauryn and Kinley, was the Grand Champion of the Western Fall National Junior Show in 2019 and 1st 4-year-old and Senior Champion of the open show. About a third of their Holsteins hails from this strong pedigree and the Youngs love the family for the consistent high type it delivers.

udders, and longevity, it’s easy to see how the herd was selected to be the official Holstein herd for the Hoard’s Judging Contest in 2006. But that was about the time that the little brown cows started making an appearance in Chehalis! Lauryn was born early at 34 1/2 weeks and weighed only 3 1/2 pounds at birth. At that time, her grandpa Kevin never thought she’d be able to handle a Holstein one day, so he and purchased a daughter of Waymar Patrick Nadine EX-97 in partnership, and the Jersey breed found a home at Claquato.
When Lauryn was four, she selected a calf out of the hutch at Family Hill Jerseys to be her first show calf. Family Hill G Faith Flirt, a Griffens Governor daughter, went on to become a fourth-generation EX-95 point cow from the famous ‘F’ family bred by the Lancasters. Flirt was a real powerhouse, and transmitted her high-type on to her offspring. She left 20 daughters at the farm, and to date, ten are Excellent and seven are Very Good. Her Motion daughter, Claquato Flirts Funky Motion VG-87% was nominated All-American and All-Canadian Summer Yearling in 2016 for Rivendale Farms. Her daughter, Claquato Verbatim Flicker is EX-94% and was the 2020 Great Western Futurity winner, and is the dam of Claquato Victorious First Run EX-91%, who was nominated Junior All-American Junior 3-Year-Old in 2020. The first homebred EX-95 cow at Claquato was bred by Kinley - Claquato Iatola Cupcake, who hails from a different deep family at Family Hill, and Cupcake completed six generations of Excellent cows. Cupcake is extremely balanced with a great udder and has two Excellent daughters in the herd, one by Thriller and one by Andreas. Dusty and partners Chris Ingram and Mike Berry bought a nice springing heifer from Family Hill in 2011 named Family Hill Counciller Nastia. From that animal comes everything they breed, show, and sell. Gary and Lauryn have done very well developing their families so far, and Kinley, as the youngest is catching up. When he was younger, Gary developed a fondness for Red & Whites, and since there wasn’t much red in their Holstein herd at the time, He used some of his cattle money to buy a package of embryos on the local Lewis County Holstein Club Sale. By Crackholm Secure out of an EX-92 Advent, the embryos came from a deep cow family bred by Mark and Stephanie Miranda. In 2019, Claquato Apple Turnover-Red VG-87, her Armani daughter was nominated All-American R&W Junior 2-Year-Old. With these kinds of results, it’s no surprise that Claquato genetics are in demand. The Youngs market their cattle by showing at local, state and national shows, through their active and engaging farm Facebook page, some print advertising, and through consigning to sales across the country. They recently sold two head at the heavilyattended Amplify Sale at Vierra Dairy, where a nice Sidekick summer junior 2-year-old prospect was purchased by RuAnn Genetics, and a pretty Joyride summer yearling found a new home with the sale host, Vierra Dairy. More recent good news from California for the Youngs came the next week when Lauryn exhibited the Supreme Champion
of the 2022 Western Classic Dairy Show, Whey-Mat DB Paige, a VG-87 EX-MS Diamondback daughter that goes back to the T-Triple-T Dundee Paige family. Along with building a deep-pedigreed dairy herd, the Young family has always been active advocates and supporters of the dairy community in Washington. Dusty was awarded the Washington State Holstein Young Breeder Award in 1997, and in a nice full circle, he and Carol were named the Master Breeder at the recent 2022 Washington State Holstein Convention. At the same convention, Dusty’s parents, Kevin and Margaret (who will celebrate their 50th anniversary this spring), and his grandparents, Fred and June, were inducted into the Washington PDCA Hall of Fame for their lifelong contributions to the state’s dairy industry. With an enthusiastic 6th generation working in the barn everyday, the Youngs are looking to the future. To support that next generation, the possibility of investing in robots and/or processing their own milk are serious options they are weighing. One thing seems certain - that after 155 years on their piece of land called Claquato, the Youngs will find a way to stay there for years to come! By Kathleen O’Keefe

MORE SHOWS, MORE JUNIORS, MORE JOY! The Junior shows in 2021 had some of the largest attendance we’ve ever seen, and those numbers went hand-in-hand with lineups exhibiting outstanding quality. Our junior members bred, bought, fitted, and marketed some superb individuals and the contest reflects their attention to detail throughout the year! The Junior All-American Holstein contest is in its’ 71st year, and every year it’s a real joy to notify those who received a Junior AllAmerican nomination or year-end title! Following the nominating committee meeting in December, ballots with the nominated animals were sent out to a larger voting panel in order to mirror the process of the Open Holstein contest. This panel was instructed to
keep three things in mind when voting – the quality of the photograph, their personal knowledge of the animal, and the animal’s junior show placings. We appreciate the thoughtfulness of their votes and thank them for their expertise in assisting with this contest. The nominees in this year’s contest come from seventeen different states. Perennial powerhouse Wisconsin blew the doors off this year with 34 nominations, followed by New York with 12; Ohio with 9; and Illinois with 8. Val-Bisson Doorman and Brenland Denver tied atop the sire list with eleven nomination each. They were followed by Dymentholm Mr Apples Avalanche
who checks in with eight, and Duckett Crush Tatoo with six. In all, 42 bulls had daughters nominated in the Junior Holstein contest. Year in and year out, we’re impressed by the professionalism, sportsmanship, and dedication of our junior exhibitors. Thank you to the parents, families, and mentors who enable these kids to gain experience at local, state and national shows. Every level brings its own lessons, and we love to see the progress of our young enthusiasts from year to year. Our warmest congratulations to the breeders and owners of the cattle featured in the following pages!

JUNIOR JERSEY - BUILDING THE EXCITEMENT! As with the Open Jersey contest, 2021 was a year of continued growth with the Junior Jersey contest! Entries from firsttime participants, along with entries from a full slate of contest veterans, resulted in more classes with tough competition to be nominated and to win a year-end award. We’re thrilled with how the quality keeps getting better and better in this 5th edition of the competition. Once again this year, ballots with the nominated animals were sent out to a larger voting panel in order to mirror the process of the Open Jersey contest. The judges were put through their paces to decide their votes as top-quality junior shows took place across the country throughout the year, and a number of animals didn’t necessarily meet head-tohead in the fall. As always, the judges were instructed to keep three things in mind when voting
84 « COWSMOPOLITAN Spring 2022
– the quality of the photograph, their personal knowledge of the animal, and the animal’s junior show placings. We appreciate their measured deliberation and thank them for participating in this contest meant to recognize junior-owned animals for their achievements in the junior show ring. The nominees this year hail from seventeen different states. Leading the way is New York with 18 nominations, just edging out Wisconsin with 17, followed by Pennsylvania with 12 and Ohio with nine. A large number of bulls across the spectrum had daughters represent them in the junior contest – 44 sires in all. Rapid Bay Indiana Gentry had a strong showing this year with eight nominations, just nosing out Chillis Action Colton and Sunset Canyon Andreas who each tallied
seven nominees. Guimo Joel, Arethusa Vitality, Rapid Bay Reviresco, J-Kay Tequila Fizz, and Tower Vue Prime Tequila all had four nominees to their credit. Eighteen of the junior-owned animals on the following pages were also nominated in the Open Jersey contest – deserving a big shout out to our young exhibitors for the kind of animals they are breeding, buying and developing! We also heartily thank the adults that make this possible for our junior members by encouraging and mentoring their progress. Our warmest congratulations to everyone that had a role in each of the marvelous Jerseys on the following pages. Your love for the little brown cow continues to flourish in show rings across the continent and we are eager to see you at ringside in 2022!

KNAPPS KRINGLE TAPPY & THE FR ALEY FAMILY
S
Building a Guernsey Legacy!
ometimes it takes a little nudge to set you in the direction that you didn’t know you needed to go! That’s just what happened when a young Landree Fraley was showing at the 2015 Lycoming County Fair in north central Pennsylvania. The Fraleys (Adam, Gina and their twin children Landree and Dakota) exhibited a number of dairy breeds, but when judge Dave Trotter spoke with them after the show, he emphasized that they needed to add a Guernsey to their string. You may recognize Dave as being part of Trotacre Farm in Enon Valley, PA - a world-famous Guernsey herd. Dave is a former President of the American Guernsey Association, so he certainly had a not-so hidden agenda in promoting the breed to the family. That seed of an idea planted in the summer of 2015 sprouted into reality in the spring of 2016 when Adam Fraley reached out to Cara Trotter and asked her to locate a good Guernsey heifer. She told Adam that a really good heifer had just sold in the Pennsylvania Blue
Halter Sale, the annual state Guernsey sale. She reached out to the buyer and a deal was struck. Knapps Kringle TappyET, a fancy winter calf, was headed to the Fraley heifer barn in Muncy, PA - the first Guernsey at the family operation. When you’re venturing into a new breed, it’s always a good idea to purchase one from a well-known, well-respected cow family, and that’s just what the Fraleys got in Tappy. A Kringle daughter out of an EX-90 Regis dam that made 27,000M and 1238F, who was a full sister to the Knapps’ famous show cow - Knapps Regis Tambourine EX-95. Tambourine was a three-time Unanimous All-American with records over 40,000M and 2055F, a three-time Reserve Grand Champion at Madison, and the 2015 Global Guernsey Cow of the Year. The next dam is Knapps Ace Tamera EX-93, a true brood cow with over 50 Excellent and Very Good daughters. Tappy’s third dam is Sunrise Luxury Tami EX-93, the matriarch of the extensive T family at Knapp Guernseys in
Epworth, IA, that has produced numerous show winners and All-American nominated individuals. It’s a family that is no stranger to the show ring and also regularly tops the performance lists - just what the Fraleys were looking for in their new project animal. But sometimes it’s about more than just what’s on the paper; sometimes that heifer also captures your heart. Gina Fraley remembers the day Tappy arrived. “Landree and Tappy had a special bond from the moment she got off the trailer. She was so easy-going and followed Landree anywhere.” Undoubtedly, they had high hopes, but may not have dreamt how far Tappy and Landree would go as a team. A successful first show season wrapped up with Tappy being named HM All-American and HM Junior All-American Winter Calf in 2016. In 2017, the pair brought their A-game to the show ring. Tappy was named Junior Champion at the Premier National Junior Show and All-American Dairy Show; Reserve Junior Champion of the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo; and Junior Champion and Reserve Supreme Junior Champion at the NAILE Junior Show in Louisville. “Tappy was the first heifer Landree had that earned a spot in a Supreme pageant. They really were a good team together - we always called them our Dynamic Duo,” recalls Gina. Tappy was named Unanimous Junior AllAmerican Winter Yearling and Reserve All-American Winter Yearling at the close of the show season. When she freshened as a two-yearold, Tappy moved to the Boop herd in MIllmont, PA. She continued her winning ways - nominated as a Senior 2-Year-Old in 2018, and named Unanimous Junior All-American and Reserve All-American 4-Year-Old in 2020, with Landree showing her every step of the way.

The 2020 National Show in Louisville will be one the Fraleys remember forever with Tappy and her daughter What’s On Tap named Grand and Junior Champion respectively.
We were thrilled with how Tappy did as a show heifer and show cow, but I never dreamed the extent to which she would breed on. We’ve owned some really good cows, but I’ve never had a cow that transmits like this. The American Pie cross was really a home run - we haven’t had a bad one. ADAM FRALEY ON TAPPY’S TRANSMITTING POWER Tappy, who had been flushed as a heifer, continued to be a prolific embryo producer as a cow. Adam thought the perfect cross for her was to Indian Acres American Pie, the extremely popular son of World Dairy Expo Supreme Champion, Indian Acres MM Pistachio Pie EX-94. They sold the resulting #1 embryos and used the #2 embryos to make show heifers, a strategy that paid off over and over, as the embryos always brought good prices, and the pregnancies they made turned into fancy calves.
The burgeoning cow family at the Twin County Farm has left lots of memories with the family. “One of the special shows that sticks out is the 2020 National Guernsey Show in Louisville. Tappy was Grand Champion of the Junior Show and What’s on Tap was Junior Champion of the Junior Show - the mother-daughter duo that swept the show,” smiles Gina. Tappy daughters made up the All-American Junior Best Three that year, and Love Tap and What’s on Tap were the Reserve AllAmerican Produce of Dam in 2021.
“We were thrilled with how Tappy did as a show heifer and show cow, but I never dreamed the extent to which she would breed on. We’ve owned some really good cows, but I’ve never had a cow that transmits like this. The American Pie cross was really a home run - we haven’t had a bad one,” says Adam. Her two milking Pie daughters have show ring resumes that rival their dam.
Sadly, the Fraleys lost Tappy earlier this year in January. “She calved early with twins, went down and couldn’t get up. We took her to the veterinary hospital at Cornell, but she passed away. It was pretty hard on all of us, and Landree particularly,” says Adam. “The one thing that helped was having her heifers in the barn, and we’ve got about 20-25 #2 embryos in the tank from her, so her story isn’t done. Her legacy will be continuing for the next few years as we make more daughters from her. We have March and December calves from her now as well as Summer and Spring yearlings in the barn, and we know
Twin County What’s On Tap claimed the ‘Triple Crown’ as a winter calf - winning the three big fall shows at Harrisburg, Madison, and Louisville on her way to being named the Unanimous All-American and Junior All-American Winter Calf in 2019. She continued in 2020 as the Unanimous Junior All-American Winter Yearling and HM All-American Winter Yearling before calving in 2021 and being nominated Junior All-American Junior 2-Year-Old.
of a good September calf of hers that we might try to buy. We’ll have a full slate of Tappy daughters to show this year.” Though they continue to have a barn full of many colors, Tappy and her offspring made the Fraleys enthusiasts of the Guernsey breed. “The Guernseys have come so far in the last ten years - they’ve really made strides in adding more width back to the breed, in their feet and legs, and udder quality. Landree really loves them - I think they may be her favorite breed. They are really nice cattle to work with temperament-wise, very gentle and they love to be loved,” notes Adam. Tappy may not be standing in the barn any longer, but she will always have an outsized place in the family’s affections, according to Adam. “She was our first bigtime show heifer. She was the first heifer Landree showed at World Dairy Expo that did well. She had so much success for our family and now her daughters are doing the same. She really took us to the next level and we’re really grateful we had the chance to work with her.” By Kathleen O’Keefe
Not to be outdone, her younger full sister, Twin County Pies Love Tap-ET, won that same Triple Crown as a Junior 2-Year-Old in 2021 - 1st at the three biggest shows led to her Unanimous All-American and Unanimous Junior All-American Junior 2-Year-Old titles (she was also the Reserve All-American Spring Calf and Reserve AllAmerican Spring Yearling in preceding years). Unlike Tappy, the Fraleys kept Love Tap at home for her 2021 campaign. “We milked her everyday here at our place and we were really happy with how she developed. We’re going to give her this year off, and bring her back as a 4-yearold next year,” explains Adam. Landree and Twin County Pies Love-ET, Unanimous AllAmerican Junior 2-Year-Old in 2021. Making the Headlines
IDW CHAMPION NOW EX-95
The “benchmark” cow in Australia is now EX95! After claiming her title of Grand Champion of the 2022 International Dairy Week National Jersey Show, Windy Ways Galaxies Dawn 7 decided she wasn’t done yet and achieved an EX-95 classification score! In 2021, she was the Interbreed Supreme Champion at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and continues to get better with age. Congratulations to Cherrylock Cattle Company of your continued success with this extraordinary cow!
ITALIAN CHAMPION IS NOW EX-97!
She is no stranger to the show ring, and now after her most recent win at the Verona Holstein Show, Du Bon Vent Inkapi is now EX-97! She is owned by BEL Holstein , BAG2, ALL. NURE Holstein, Lorenz Bach & Luca Sarreri and bred by Gaec Du Bon Vent! Inkapi scored EX-96 just last year after an impressive year on the show circuit, earning Reserve Senior Champion honors at Montichiari. She was also 2nd at Swiss Expo in 2019 & 2020 and was Reserve Grand Champion there in 2017. Photo © Guillaume Moy Photographies
A FINE ITALIAN EXCELLENT-96
SWITZERLAND'S NEWEST EX-96
Off of her Reserve Grand Champion win at the Verona Holstein Show, Sabbiona Doorman Tiky is now EX-96 for Sabbiona Holstein! Tiky was also named HM Grand Champion this past fall at the National Italian Show in Montichiari. Congratulations to everyone involved in her success!
In La Joux, Switzerland, lies Rogy Holsteins, a farm with a rich history and interesting story. Their newest success is Rogy Goldwyn Ghardaia who recently classified EX-96-4E at 10-years-old and on her 6th lactation! Ghardaia’s ancestry traces back to the farms first few Holsteins, including one of their esteemed foundation dams, Rogy Lyster Odyssee EX-92. She has proven that the family only gets better with time as she rose to the top of her class and was named Grand Champion of the Swiss Expo in 2018 and the Junior Expo Bulle in 2017. Congratulations to her breeder and owner, Joe Demierre on Ghardaia’s continued success!
THE EAGLE HAS LANDED AT EX-95
After much anticipation, Lantland Farms broke out the champagne when they received their newest classification scoring on Lantland Destry Eagle, who is now EX-95! In 2020, Eagle was Grand Champion of the North American Red & White Junior Show, earning her Junior All-American honors. Congratulations to Kirt Menzi and Lantland Farms on breeding this exceptional cow! COWSMOPOLITAN Spring 2022 » 107
