elcome to the last issue of Cowsmopolitan in 2019! As we wrap up the 15th year of publication for the magazine (and the fourth issue for us!), it’s a fitting moment to think about goals. One of the best things about doing coverage at all the major shows is the chance to visit with the exhibitors and breeders after winning a championship. Several times this fall, a winning owner mentioned where their journey had begun in the show ring – namely, at the bottom. David Jordan, co-owner of Edgelea Tequila Sheraton, 2019 Grand Champion at the All-American Jersey Show, reminisced about standing dead last with the first cow he ever showed at Louisville. But then he also talked about how much he loved attending the AllAmerican Show every year, how much he dreamed, and, most importantly, how much he learned. How satisfying then, these many years later, to be standing on the other end of the class and to be holding the Grand Champion trophy. Was it a straight line from the bottom to the top? Of course not. Was it worth the struggle? Absolutely. David would be the first to tell you that not every cow develops into a Grand Champion. Not every goal you make comes to fruition as quickly as you would

like – that’s true for every one of us. Every agonizing, irritating, even heartbreaking, set back along the way teaches us something about that goal. Hardwon lessons…and sometimes just hard lessons. Maybe you realize that goal isn’t truly what you want anymore, or maybe the cost of getting there is just too high – goals don’t have to be carved in stone for the rest of your life. But if you’ve got a goal that’s etched in your heart, keep at it! The effort is a big part of the prize – at least until you’re holding that trophy! Here at Cowsmo, we love to hear the stories about the sweat and work behind the headshots, the Master Breeder Shields, the top of the list sires. Knowing someone else had a twisty-turning path on the way to success can be a big help to those that are still pushing along. And here we are – pushing along! It’s only been a year since we decided to purchase Cowsmo and less than that since we took the helm, but it’s been a fabulous experience! An experience filled with long days and late nights doing event coverage, writing stories, designing ads, and everything that goes along with producing a magazine, but we’re thrilled with our decision to do this full-time and full-bore.

One of the first goals we set for 2020 was to increase the number of issues per year from five to seven – and we are achieving that goal! Look for the AllAmerican Holstein and Jersey Contest Nominations in our new January issue; the Junior Holstein and Jersey Contest to be featured in our new February issue; and All-American winners highlighted in March along with our regular Spring issue! We’ve got more goals for 2020 and beyond and we’re excited to have all of you as partners in those dreams! Take a moment for yourself as 2019 comes to a close, and think about your goals for 2020 and beyond. We can’t wait to feature your success in these pages one day. Happy Holidays! We’ll see you in the New Year – here’s to a happy and prosperous 2020!

T

he person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it.” That’s a fabulous quote, and it really sums up the forward-thinking mentality of the Kozak family of New Sarepta, Alberta. Anyone who is down on the future of the dairy industry or negative about the younger generation coming back to the farm will find there’s no one listening at Kozak Holsteins! The operation was started by Brenda and Henry Kozak in 1988 with a gift of 20 cows and quota from Esther and Steve Reminsky (Brenda’s parents who owned Remm Holsteins). Though their initial stake came in the form of a gift, no one can say the Kozaks took the easy route. Their first farm was affordable because it was a bank repossession, but affordable also meant run down. They moved into a mobile home on the property, fixed up the barn and started milking their 20 cows. With lots of elbow grease and help, they cleaned up the property and started their family as Katelyn and Keith were born in 1990 and 1993. By 1995, the small barn was at capacity, and the opportunity arose to buy a larger farm just ½ mile down the road. With room for 60 cows, a large house, shop, sheds and buildings for machinery and feed storage, the Kozaks had found their new home. They transitioned the herd from a tie-stall situation to a parlor and free-stall setup and embarked on breeding the kind of cows that would be profitable for their future. After high school, both Katelyn and Keith attended Lakeland College in Vermilion, AB. Katelyn graduated in 2011 with a diploma in Animal Health Technology. This landed her a job at the Farm Animal Hospital in Leduc, AB, where she worked full

time for 7 years as a Registered Veterinary Technician. She gained a tremendous amount of knowledge of all-around cattle health which has been very useful on the farm. While working off farm full-time, she still came home to the farm and help with chores everyday. Keith graduated with a diploma in Crop Technology in 2013 and returned to the farm to oversee and manage all field/cropping work. Along with Henry and Brenda, he has purchased some land of his own and farms with them. In 2016, both Katelyn and Keith decided to make the commitment to farm alongside their parents and step into ownership roles. “That meant we needed to rent more land, buy more quota and start planning a new barn build. Our old barn was at full capacity and needing fixing up, so the most efficient move was to build an improved facility and grow the herd to accommodate all of us full-time on the farm,” says Katelyn. In August 2018, they moved 65 cows into a new 120 free-stall barn with a double-10 parabone parlor. Currently, they are milking 85 Registered Holsteins and one Jersey. With an emphasis on longevity, the average age of the herd is approaching 5-years-old. Brenda and Katelyn like to develop big, wide deep, open framed cows that reach their full potential. BCAs for the herd are 204-219-213 and the herd classification totals are 4 ME, 3 EX, 47 VG and 43 GP. The family handles the labor needs on the farm - no hired employees – just the help of neighbors during fieldwork season. Katelyn’s boyfriend, Scott Lawson, helps quite a bit as well. He manages a 160 cow/ calf beef herd with his family. When he isn’t busy there, you can find him doing

fieldwork, maintenance and helping with chores at the dairy. He also has taken quite an interest in helping Katelyn at the shows and is very meticulous on show day! Brenda tackles the bookkeeping, helps with milking and feeds calves, gives her input on herd management, and helps with other odd jobs. Henry manages field work and maintenance of equipment as well as general farm maintenance and government paperwork. Keith oversees field work, cropping inputs and harvesting. He works with the nutritionist to keep the milking herd and outside stock fed. Katelyn handles overall cattle health and daily care, milking, breeding, calf feeding/ care, marketing genetics, and managing the show string. The Kozaks farm 1100 acres of land and grow all of their own hay and barley for forages, along with growing canola and malt barley as cash crops. They do all of their own fieldwork from seeding, haying, silaging, combining, dry manure and bale hauling. From the beginning, Henry and Brenda always strove to improve both the type and production of the herd. Once Katelyn and Keith were in their 4-H years, an emphasis on breeding individuals that could be competitive in the show ring became more of a priority. “The goal of our breeding program is to try and breed an all-around complete cow. We like a heifer that can compete in the show ring and hopefully she is also competitive as a milking animal. Along with show style, she needs to be a balanced cow that efficiently converts feed into milk and has the proper conformation to make a long-lasting cow. We like to show cattle, and over the years we worked on keeping up with trends of the show ring to breed

“We like to breed from proven cow families (on both sides of pedigrees), but we also have a small number of genomic animals, as well as red & white and polled cattle.” KATELYN KOZAK ON THE THEIR SIRE SELECTION

The matriarch of Kozak Holsteins, Remm Fancy Paul Mila EX-5E-CAN 4*. cattle that can compete at big shows with tough competition,” Katelyn elaborates. Over the past few years, they have focused somewhat more on production and that has influenced AI sire selection. “We like to breed from proven cow families (on both sides of pedigrees), but we also have a small number of genomic animals, as well as red & white and polled cattle,” notes Katelyn. Their most influential matriarch, Remm Fancy Paul Mila EX-5E-CAN 4*, accounted for the initial base of the show herd. “She lived to be 14-years-old, was flushed heavily, and we sold her bulls as they were often requested by local breeders who admired her. We used some of her sons in the herd and their resulting daughters often rose to the top of our herd. She produced 13 daughters which still influence the herd today,” notes Katelyn. The most well-known descendant of Mila is Kozak Reg Macy, a Regancrest Reginald daughter who was Reserve All-Western Junior Yearling in 2016. An off-age April heifer, she was purchased by Kenton Lindenbach of Robella Holsteins, and he showed her at WDE where she placed 13th in a strong yearling class. That week she was resold to Esteban Posada of Mexico where he helped Macy reach her full potential, as later that year she was Reserve Junior Champion of the Mexico National Holstein Show. She calved in with an amazing udder and is a regular in the Posada show string. An STBVQ Rubens calf purchased in 2010 from Wendon Holsteins continues to influence the herd a decade later. Wendon Rube Debbie calved in and went on to score VG-85. Her Bluechip Mr Aussie Apple great-granddaughter - Kozak Aussie Destiny Red VG-87-2YR was Intermediate Champion at AB Dairy Congress and Reserve Grand Champion Red & White at Westerner Dairy Showcase this year, and she was just named HM AllWest Senior 2-Year-Old for 2019.

In 2013, Katelyn purchased a greatgranddaughter of Larcrest Cosmopolitan at the Morsan 300 Sale. Morsan Oak Cinergy VG-86 boosted the genomic profile of the herd and produced a daughter, Kozak Daft Punk Cassia VG-852YR-USA, who entered the ST Genetics IVF program. Cassia’s daughter, Kozak Worth Carmella-ET, was subsequently purchased by ST Genetics, and the family is currently working with some of Cassia’s other daughters. The polled segment of their breeding program stems from a calf purchased by Katelyn and her former employer at the vet clinic, Dr. Dana Somers. Together they purchased Rietben Colt Madonna VG-85, a polled Colt45 daughter out of Rietben Sterling Miley EX-90 who is backed by 11 generations of VG or EX cows. Madonna was flushed as a heifer to Aussie Apple and produced two outstanding red daughters: Kozak Aussie Red Robin P VG-87-2YR and Kozak Aussie Red Ribbon P VG-85-2YR both now owned by Westcoast Holsteins. Red Robin was the 2nd place Junior 2-YearOld at the Royal Red & White Show in 2018. With an eye to various genetic markets, the Kozaks select a range of bulls to use in the herd. There are a few genomic bulls in the tank to use on the Larcrest Cinergy line to keep the numbers moving ahead, but they also pay attention to popular type sires at the shows to produce the next generation of fancy heifers. Current bulls in the semen tank include Stantons Alligator, Walnutlawn Skyhigh, Solomon, Sandstorm, Brenland Denver, Lindenright Apps, Siemers Overwing, and Crasdale Chill to name a few. With a good group of red cows in the herd, they also look to make more red ones with Dulet Amazon

Kozak Aussie Destiny Red VG-87-2YR, Reserve Grand Champion, Westerner R&W ‘19.

Red, Westcoast Swingman Red, Riverdown Unstopabull and Incredibull Red, Blondin Warrior, Mirand PP, Awesome Red, Ruti Appleboy Red, Vogue Never Again PP, Ammo P, Diamondback, and Aussie Apple. They raise breeding bulls to market to other dairymen but will use these bulls at time on some of the herd. “Over the years we have been lucky and gotten some exceptional daughters out of our homebred bulls, so if we favor a particular bull in our pen, we’ll use him heavily on our lower end heifers,” explains Katelyn. It’s not always easy to market cattle from the prairie provinces, but the Kozaks are stepping up their efforts on that front. Showing and local connections always inform some clients, including breeding bull customers. They consign to the sale at Alberta Dairy Congress and will occasionally utilize print ads in breed journals. Katelyn uses Facebook as an advertising/promotional tool for marketing and joined the Cowsmopolitan Breeder Tour to help grow their audience. “We have used professional photography at the shows more in the last few years so we can promote our cattle better and get great pictures when they’re looking their best,” Katelyn enthuses. “Our biggest challenge as purebred breeders is to keep up with the demands of our buyers,” comments Katelyn. At Kozak Holsteins, they look forward to tackling that future challenge with as much determination as they’ve brought to growing their operation in the past. If you doubt they can do it, don’t tell them – just stay out of their way! By Kathleen O’Keefe

ROYAL 2019 ... LYNZI WINS IT ALL

In one of the largest Holstein shows at the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair in recent years, crowd favorite Idee Windbrook Lynzi EX-95 was selected as Grand Champion by Judge Carl Phoenix. Lynzi, fresh just two weeks, wowed the crowd with her balance and grace in the show ring, and was led by Joël Lepage, one of Lynzi’s owners. The winning 5-year-old is also owned by Richard and Shannon Allyn, CT, Frank and Diane Borba, CA, Stephane Gendreau, QC, and is housed at JM Valley Holstein, QC. On Saturday, Lynzi capped off a perfect week, capturing Supreme Champion honors. Lynzi’s daughter, Idee Doorman Lysa sold for $215,000 at the Best of Jacobs Sale earlier this year, and was the 2nd place Junior 3-YearOld for new owners, Mike and Julie Duckett, WI. Lysa has now maxed out at EX-92 as well. Another daughter, JM Valley Dempsey Lyzara VG-87-2Y, was All-Canadian Summer Yearling in 2018 and was HM Grand Champion at the Rimouski Show this summer. Her daughter by Crushtime sold for $17,000 in the Sale of Stars on Thursday afternoon of the Royal. Lynzi, bred by Master Breeder Idee Holsteins of Hunter River, PEI, is the fifth Prince Edward Island-bred National Holstein Grand Champion, and the fourth since 2002. Previous

Champions include Eastside Lewisdale Gold Missy (2011), Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto (2010), and Idee Lustre (2002), a family member to Lynzi. While PEI is the second smallest dairy province in Canada, the influence of the PEI dairy industry and the breeders represented is much more significant. In the first time at the Royal in recorded history, a heifer was named Supreme Champion back-to-back. Miss OCD Doorm Georgette-ET was the winning Winter Yearling and Holstein Junior Champion for Kevin Doeberiener, Lindsay Bowen and William Schilling, OH. Georgette had sold in the 2018 Sale of Stars and before taking the Junior Champion title. Her dam is Penlow Geography Goldwyn EX-94 8*. Reseve Junior Champion was the winning Junior yearling, Knonaudale Ohyah, owned by JP Proulx, JM Valley and Stephane Gendreau. Westcoat Holsteins had HM with Windcroft Drman Irreplaceable, the Supreme Champion heifer from Expo. Ferme Jacobs once again captured Premier Breeder honors of the Holstein Show, with Ferme Blondin/Blondin Sires taking Premier Exhibitor honors. Reyncrest Farm of New York repeated their World Dairy Expo success by winning the Premier Breeder banner of the

Heifer Show and Westcoast Holsteins, BC, was named Premier Exhibitor of the heifer show. Vierra Farms of California once again had an outstanding showing in Toronto, taking home Grand and Reserve Grand Champion honors of the National Jersey Show in 2019. Judge Pierre Boulet switched the Champions from Madison, however, with Showdown Justine claiming Senior and Grand Champion honors and Bri-Lin Valson Spritz taking the Reserve title. HM went to Bri-Lin Karballa Salvia, the winning Mature Cow for Brian and Linda Raymer, ON. Pleasant Nook Jerseys was named Premier Breeder and Exhibitor of the show and also owned the Intermediate Champion and winning Junior 3-year-old, Pleasant Nook Apple Dumpling. In the heifer show, Morningmist Jerseys, ON, was named Premier Exhibitor and Charlyn Jerseys was named Premier Breeder. Junior Champion was Golden Joyride Louisa owned by Glen & Sheila Burgess, ON. For the third time, Meadow Green Absolute Fanny-Red was named Grand Champion of the National Red & White Show for Triple-T Holsteins, Mike Berry, T&L Cattle, Frank & Diane Borba and Frank & Carol Borba, OH. Fanny also

Supreme Champion Idee Windbrook Lynzi.

Premier Herdsman Awards went to Drentex Jerseys, ON; Trent Valley, ON; Ferme Malic S.e.n.c., QC; and Reyncrest Farm, NY.

won the Lifetime Production class during the Holstein Show the follow day and was pulled out for Grand Champion consideration. Reserve Grand Champion was Colganados D Avianca-Red, the 2nd Mature Cow owned by Oakfield Corners Dairy, NY. Weeberlac Tickle Me-Red continued her winning ways north of the border claiming Intermediate Champion honors, just like World Dairy Expo, for Alyson Phillips, Ferme Blondin & Kurt Wolf, QC. She also placed 2nd in the Junior 2-year-old Holstein class the following day. It was a two-farm race in this year’s National Ayrshire Show. Of the 12 possible Champion titles in this year’s show, 10 of them were won by just two farms - Vieux Village and Ferme Margot ENR - both of Qeubec. Senior and Grand Champion honors went to Ferme Margot ENR with Margot Patagonia, the winning Mature Cow. They also had the winning Senior 2-year-old Margot Calimero Lola, who claimed the Intermediate Champion ribbon. Belleroute Rocky Mountain rounded out their champions with an HM Junior Champion win. Florent, Vicky and Bianca Foley of Vieux Village once again earned the title of Premier Breeder and Exhibitor. Vieux Village Predator Apple was named Reserve Grand Champion and Vieux Village BB Lady was

Milking Shorthorn National Grand Champion Star Jacks Dorito was included in consideration for this year’s Royal Supreme Champion. Reserve Intermediate Champion. Their winning Intermediate Champion, Vieux Village Gentleman Joy, was named Junior Champion. For the first time since 2000, the National Milking Shorthorn Junior and Grand Champions were included in the Supreme Champion ceremony. Grand Champion North Star Jacks Dorito was exhibited by the Ashton family of Port Perry, ON, and Junior Champion Prinsville Bolero Stars was exhibited by Prinsville Dairy Farms of Bloomfield, ON. ANDREA CROWE MEMORIAL AWARD The 2019 presentation of the Andrea Crowe Memorial Award was held at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON, on November 8th during the National Holstein Show. The award is designed to recognize a young adult who demonstrates enthusiasm and dedication to the dairy industry, as well as active involvement in their community. Anne and Andrew Crowe presented the award to Ryan Krohlow of Poynette, WI. Ryan, his wife Haley, and their three children Callie, Conway, and Cooper own and operate Hammertime Holsteins. Growing up on his family farm, Craig-Kro Holsteins and Jerseys in Black Creek, WI, Ryan learned from a very early age that hard work ethic, honesty, and perseverance are some of the most essential keys to a successful career within our beloved dairy industry. His many years on the family farm and time spent traveling as a professional fitter also have inspired and driven a life-long passion for breeding deep pedigreed cow families that not only transmit but also exhibit equal parts style, balance and strength. Ryan and Haley’s years of hard work are very evident by their multiple All-American Nominations as well as many All-Wisconsin winners. In addition to pursuing his passion for breeding great animals, Ryan has had the incredible opportunity to travel worldwide during the past 15 years as a professional dairy cattle fitter to countries such as Canada, England, Germany, Italy, Sweden,

Switzerland, and Mexico and has had the privilege to prepare 17 Grand Champions at World Dairy Expo, as well as eight Grand Champions at the Royal Winter Fair. Ryan has never missed a World Dairy Expo or Royal Winter Fair since his infatuation with the great cows and great people of this industry first began. Ryan’s enthusiasm and dedication to the dairy industry is also very evident through his love of not only exhibiting in the ring, but also as serving as the official judge for many prestigious shows. Ryan has served as Associate Judge for the 2017 International Junior Holstein Show, Southwest National Spring Show, Western Spring National Show, Ohio State Fair, Maryland State Fair, along with many district and county shows throughout the entire Midwest. Through judging Ryan has had numerous opportunities to share his incredible positive personality, keen eye for great cows, and expertise learned from years of experience, with fellow exhibitors and especially to the next generation of youth who he has mentored and continues to serve as an outstanding role model to. Many times, Ryan can be seen taking extra time to help coach and give positive feedback to each and every youth all the way down the line whenever judging a showmanship class. Furthermore, Ryan also lends his talents and knowledge to all youth that want to learn the ins and outs of caring and preparing show cattle

Ryan Krohlow with wife Haley, Andrea Crowe’s family, left and center, and his parents Marlene and Craig. through many fitting workshops throughout the state of WI. He is always willing to extend a helpful hand to fellow exhibitors and goes out of his way to provide advice and guidance to aspiring youth. In addition to Ryan’s busy schedule of family, fitting, and developing heifers for the show ring he also is a full-time hoof trimmer and serves as a part-time consultant with Milksource Genetics. Ryan is an essential component to the success of any and all show strings that he is a part of. Not only is his talent and vast expertise a crucial factor in preparing cows and heifers for the ring, he has the ability to include everyone nomatter what their skill level, or whatever the situation may be. Ryan also is very active within his local church and community, as well as assumes many leadership roles at all levels of Holstein events. Congratulations to Ryan on receiving this honor! 40 YEARS OF THE CLASSIC

T

he TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic has been called the “Stanley Cup”, “Super Bowl” and “Olympics” of the 4-H dairy program in Canada. In November, Canada’s largest all-breeds 4-H dairy cattle show marked its 40th anniversary at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON. For four decades, the Classic has been bringing 4-H dairy club members and their project animals together from across Canada to compete in what is the pinnacle of the 4-H show season. The idea for a national 4-H dairy cattle show started in 1980 in the offices of Hays Farms International Ltd., the Oakville, ON, based livestock exporting and sales firm. A small group of 4-H enthusiasts and Hays staff began talking about the feasibility of starting a 4-H dairy show that would bring together the best 4-H animals and showpersons from across the country, similar to the Queen’s Guineas beef competition at the Royal. Tom Hays Sr., president of Hays Farms, thought it was a great idea. With Hays’ endorsement, Bill Edelstein of the Hays staff began seeking interest from others, as did Bertram Stewart, respected Ontario showman, judge and youth supporter, who was part of that discussion. Lowell Lindsay, retired Semex sire analyst and renowned showman

and judge, was also invited to be on the original organization committee. Bill Edelstein approached Doug Wagner, then eastern correspondent for the Alberta dairy newspaper Dairy Contact, to see if they would like to be involved. They were. The first “Contact Hays Classic” was held on October 19, 1980 at the Hays Farms’ sales arena at Oakville. Open to just Ontario 4-H members, the event was a huge success attracting 125 entries from 25 counties. Mark Smith of Sunnylodge Farms, the three-time Master Breeder herd at Chesterville, ON, showed the Classic’s first conformation champion. “I remember Bill Edelstein calling my Dad and asking if he could put together a group of 4-H calves from Eastern Ontario for that first Classic,” says Smith. “Dad asked me if I wanted to go. I loved to show, so said sure. I was only 13. I well remember my calf being made champion that day and the judge’s reasons. It was a special moment being invited to go to that show.” By 1983, interest in the Classic had grown enormously and the show was moved to larger facilities at the Markham, ON, fairgrounds. In 1984, organizers invited 4-H members from across Canada to participate. That year, 255 4-H members

The Classic moved to its present home at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 1985. That same year, the name was changed to “Scotiabank Hays Classic” when Scotiabank became one of the major sponsors. In 1987, all ten Canadian provinces competed at the Classic. It would be the first, and only time, every province was represented at the Classic because of costs and logistics and the creation of the Western Canadian Classic (WCC) in Western Canada. The Classic

Committee, however, is ever hopeful that someday they may get back to every province being represented again. In 2008, the show became the “TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic” when TD Bank became the signature sponsor, along with longtime major sponsors Holstein Canada and Semex. “Sponsorship is the backbone of the Classic. We could not function without these people,” says Classic Committee Chairman Murray Reissner, who had a 41-year career in the A.I. sector under the Semex umbrella of companies. Other current subsidiary sponsors include Jensen Halters (a sponsor since 1980), Gay Lea, Dairy Farmers of Ontario, Norwell, Dominion Regalia Limited, Walker Dairy Inc., Cowsmopolitan, Ontario Holstein and the Royal. Every 4-H team at the Classic also relies on financial support from local sponsors who help cover the costs of hotels, airfare, trucking, meals, etc. for competitors. Limits are set on the number of entries that can come from each county/ province to the Classic. A maximum of eight calves are allowed per county in Ontario and in six designated regions of Quebec, while eight calves per province

are permitted in all other parts of Canada. Competition is fierce for a place on the Classic team with sometimes as many as 40 or more 4-H members in a single county/province vying for one of the coveted spots. Blair Weeks of Weeksdale Holsteins, Pleasant Valley, PEI, took great pride in being chosen Blair Weeks (center) had the champion calf and was champion showman at the for his Classic team five 2006 Classic. It was a way to expand my knowledge and be exposed to different outlooks.” John is currently the manager of his family’s 1500-head Futurecrest Holsteins dairy operation, and also auctioneers at the monthly sales at his family’s Walker Dairy Sales. The “Breeder of Distinction” award was the idea of Brad Sayles. Sayles, who grew up at Bridon Farms, Paris, ON, has had a long career in the A.I. industry, starting as a sire analyst with United Breeders in 1998. Today, he is Chief Operating Officer at Semex, Guelph, ON. “The Classic is such a learning experience,” he relates. “When you are young, you go for the first time and watch everyone work together. You meet new people and quickly begin to understand the effort and work required to be successful at whatever you choose to do in life. As you get older and continue to participate, you begin to take on more leadership responsibilities within the team and build confidence in your abilities. The Classic, and 4-H, build life skills that you don’t learn in school. It exposes you to different facets of agriculture and teaches you to build relationships that can open up opportunities later in life.”

“There is only one winner on the day of the Classic, but all the kids participating can take home many positives from a show of this caliber such as making new friends, learning to be part of a team, showing their calf to the best of their ability, and ‘learning to do by doing’, while having fun in the process.” SCOTT WALKER, 1981 CHAMPION SHOWMAN & 1999 SHOWMANSHIP JUDGE

Many of the men and women who have competed at the Classic have gone on to become leaders in the dairy cattle industry. Many are now respected dairy cattle breeders and judges, while others have assumed leadership roles in A.I., sale management, marketing, or pursued other ties with agriculture. Many are now 4-H leaders, Classic chaperones or volunteers, or parents of Classic competitors. Scott Walker of Walkerbrae Farms, the twotime Master Breeder herd at Guelph, ON, was showmanship champion in 1981 and then judged the Classic’s showmanship classes in 1999 after his father, James (1989), and brother, Brent (1994), had also done so. “The Classic was a unique and valuable opportunity for me to meet other dairy breeders from across Canada that I still see at shows and sales today. I first met my wife Deb at the Classic,” he says. “The Classic opened doors for me and later I was hired to work for several prominent showstrings such as Hanover Hill and Pamtom.” Walker continues, “There is only one winner on the day of the Classic, but all the kids participating can take home many positives from a show of this caliber such as making new friends, learning to be part of a team, showing their calf to the best of their ability, and ‘learning to do by doing’, while having fun in the process.” Steve Fraser of the two-time Master Breeder Fraeland Farms, Fergus, ON, is one

As Crack says, “The Classic instills in youth the desire and drive to be the best. Many of the best young leaders and bright minds in agriculture today have experienced the 4-H Classic. I am certain that every one of them would say that the Classic taught them so much more than how to prepare and show a calf. It helped form the person they are today and made them a better person.”

In 1989, the Quebec Southwest Group of Three entry was anchored by David Crack Jr. (second from right) and his champion Classic calf. © Canadian Livestock Photography judge. When I got to judge showmanship at the Classic in 2006, I remembered all the times I had been in the Classic ring and vowed I would give every kid the best chance to show me what they could do.” Crack, whose father judged the Classic conformation classes in 1983, is one of only three father and son/daughter duos to have judged the Classic. In 2017, Kolton Crack replicated his father’s feat of being honorable mention champion showman in his first year at the Classic. “The Classic is the best youth show in the world,” says David Crack, who has judged shows in more than 20 countries to date. Classic participants, he says, learn many important life lessons by being part of this show: *TO BE HUMBLE… “These kids are the best of the best in their regions, but when they come to the Classic they quickly find out that there are others as good or better. It pushes the best to be better. It takes a perfect performance to capture the top spots.” *ADVERSITY, PRESSURE AND HOW TO DIGEST WINNING, LOSING AND DISAPPOINTMENT… “Every kid at the Classic has a dream of winning. Not everyone can win. This event teaches kids how to cope with adversity and failure, just like the real world. It builds character. Kids learn that calves do not always cooperate, different judges have different opinions, and even if you won last year, this year is not a given. You learn how to lose, how to win, and that if you give 110% you can always hold your head high.” 32 « COWSMOPOLITAN Winter Edition 2019

*HARD WORK IS A KEY TO SUCCESS IN LIFE… “At the Classic, if you don’t bring your ‘A’ game, or if you cut corners throughout the year, you will not be in the hunt for the awards at the end of the day. To be the best showman, it takes focus, training, practice and honing your craft to be competitive.” *ACCOUNTABILITY AND TEAMWORK… “For three days these kids become a mini-showstring. They learn how to be accountable to their team, how to work together, and how to bring the strengths of each member to the forefront. While members may have different views, the team in the end has to come together and make a plan that fits for everyone.”

The success of the Classic would not be possible without the large group of dedicated volunteers who each year donate their time to organize and help put on the show. Two men, Lowell Lindsay and Doug Wagner, have been on the Classic Committee all 40 years. Just three men have been Chairman of the Classic Committee since its inception – Bill Edelstein (1980 to 2008), Bert Stewart and now Murray Reissner. “We all have the same passion, desire and vision,” says Reissner, who has been on the Classic Committee since 1984. “We want to make the Classic the best experience we can for the 4-H competitors. We want to give them that magical feeling of showing at the Royal.” As Reissner says, “The Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic is way more than just a cow show. It is an opportunity for young people to learn life skills, build lifelong friendships and memories to last a lifetime.” By Bonnie Cooper

VANDER MEULEN WINS CURTIS CLARK AWARD Andrew Vander Meulen of Avonlea Genetics Inc., Brighton, ON, has won the Curtis Clark Achievement Award for 2019. His selection was announced on November 8th during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ont. Vander Meulen is the 33rd recipient of this award which was established by the Alberta Holstein Branch in 1988 to honour the late Curtis Clark of Acme Holsteins, a respected Alberta Holstein breeder, cowman and showman. Andrew Vander Meulen, 49, has been involved with Jersey cattle all his life. He grew up on his parents’ Peninsula Jersey Farm at Stirling, ON, where he developed his love and passion for breeding purebred Jerseys while working on the farm and participating in 4-H. Following graduation from Kemptville Agricultural College, he worked for six and a half years for Jersey Canada as Assistant Executive Secretary and Associate Editor of their Canadian Jersey Breeder magazine. During his time with the Association, Vander Meulen cultivated many great relationships with Jersey breeders around the world, while also gaining a great business background. In 1997, Andrew married Jennifer Livock and

they became partners in the operation now known as Avonlea Genetics with Jennifer’s parents, Jim and Liz Livock. Offspring from three of the original six cows purchased for the farm by the Featherstones are still making an impact at Avonlea. Following a barn fire, the farm moved to Brighton in 2000. While the Avonlea herd has always had a worldwide reputation for breeding quality cattle, Andrew and Jen have worked tirelessly to bring the herd even further to the forefront of the Jersey breed. Today Andrew and Jen and their children, Taylor, 18, and Will, 16, along with help from Jen’s parents, manage this highly regarded Jersey herd. A two-time Master Breeder winner, Avonlea Genetics was this year’s Breeder of Distinction at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic. The Avonlea herd presently consists of 20 Excellent, 33 Very Good and four Good Plus cows. Avonlea has earned over 300 All-Canadian nominations resulting in 55 All-Canadian and 42 Reserve All-Canadian awards. An internationally recognized judge, Andrew has judged national Jersey shows in Canada (Royal Winter Fair), the United States (the All-American and World Dairy Expo), Brazil,

Andrew Vander Meulen, second from left, with Curtis Clark presenter Orville Schmidt, previous winners Don Chalack and Rolland Dubois.

Mexico and Colombia, as well as officiating at shows in Australia and countless more across North America. Vander Meulen is humbled to have won the Clark award. He says it is truly an honour for him to be recognized by a group who have been his peers and mentors and for whom he has the utmost respect. He is also grateful to the Alberta Holstein Branch for their continued efforts in sponsoring this award. “This type of recognition is important in our industry, and I am glad the Alberta Branch has continued the tradition of this award,” he says. IN MEMORIAM - PETER ENGLISH G. Peter English passed away at South Lake Regional Hospital, Newmarket on Friday, November 29, 2019, age 76 years. Born November 6, 1943, Peter grew up on the Enghill Holsteins farm of his parents, Gordon and Eleanor (Garvey) English, along with his five siblings. Active as a 4-H member in showing cattle from his family’s Master Breeder-winning herd, his asthma condition prevented him from a career on the farm as a Holstein breeder, although he always maintained the use of the Enghill prefix. He found other venues for his Holstein enthusiasm. He attended the Diploma Course at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, where in 1966 was a member of winning OAC judging team at the Royal Winter Fair. He graduated in 1967, the same year he joined the Holstein Journal staff as an associate editor, sharing both advertising and editorial duties. In June 1978, he was appointed Holstein Journal livestock advertising manager. His dream of one day owning the magazine became a reality in 1987, when he became a partner in the Holstein Journal with Don Mackenzie, Keith Boddaert and Bruce Murchison. In August 1991, he became sole 48 « COWSMOPOLITAN Winter Edition 2019

owner of the Holstein Journal under his company, the Holstein Journal Group Inc. In addition to being owner and publisher, he remained livestock advertising manager. In subsequent years, he was a part of the technological evolution of Holstein Journal, overseeing the process as the magazine went from letterpress to offset printing to desktop publishing. He established the digital version of the magazine and Holstein Journal website. The Holstein Journal and the Holstein business was his life. Over the years, he traveled countless miles to attend shows, sales, meetings and to make farm calls. He was in the office seven days a week, often with 12+ hour days. He truly enjoyed the Holstein community and always remembered the contributions of retired and senior Holstein breeders and industry personnel. In March 2019, he announced that he was ceasing printing of the Holstein Journal after 81 years of publication. He planned to continue conducting Holstein Journal’s All-Canadian contest, and at the time of his death was working on the 2019 contest. English was bestowed with Holstein Canada’s Certificate of Recognition award in 2008, and

Peter English, center, with Bonnie Cooper being recognized at the 2019 National Convention by Holstein Canada President Gerald Schipper and Past President Harry Van der Linden.

in 2015, he was presented with the Supreme Dairy Show’s International Friend Award in Quebec. At the 2019 National Holstein Convention, Peter and long-time Holstein Journal editor, Bonnie Cooper, were honored for the accomplishments of the Holstein Journal and its role in keeping breeders across Canada informed and connected with the Registered Holstein industry. He was the loving brother of Kerry English of Mississauga, Colleen Olsen of Cobourg, Julie English, Barbara Clifford and Margaret Gheyssen, all of Toronto; and beloved uncle of several nieces and nephews. Services were held in early December with a private interment at St. Paul’s Cemetery in Norwood, ON.

STRONGER THAN THE STORM 2

019 is a year that many farmers would like to put behind them. Historic snow amounts collapsed barn roofs; spring flooding prevented crops from being planted throughout North America; drought in Australia and New Zealand forced dairy and beef operations to close their doors; and a wet fall and early cold weather halted harvest of what crops actually did get planted. While we all know you can’t control the weather and natural disasters, how you deal with the situation and embrace the challenge can mean the difference between moving forward or being left behind. For the Leach family of Linwood, KS, they choose to be “stronger than the storm” and ended 2019 with purple ribbons and banners from the All American Jersey Show. May 28 started like any other day for Rob and Lisa Leach, and their daughters, Taylor, Erin and Sophie. While the girls were helping at the Legacy of Wilstar Dispersal in Pine River, WI, a massive EF-4 tornado tore Lin-Crest Farm apart, which had been in the family since 1964. Nearly every building on the farm was destroyed, with significant damage to the house as well. Rob’s sister Chris and her family were not as lucky, however, with their house literally ripped from the foundation by the tornado. Despite losing 10 barns, every mile of fence and almost every tree on the property, no person was hurt, and that is something the family has been thankful for over the last six months.

“When we first came From day one, we’ve felt guilty about how people have out of the house after helped us and donated equipment, their time and the tornado was over, money. We are just so grateful and humbled. Lisa and I headed straight towards the ROB AND LISA LEACH barn and Chris met us about 15 minutes later,” Rob said. “The calves were all pretty That evening, Christy called Roy Buessing, unscathed despite their hutches being a fellow Kansas dairyman who lived about blown away. They were running around 2 hours away. Roy hadn’t heard about the having a grand old time! The cows were tornado yet, but immediately jumped in more in shock … 125 cows just hanging the truck and headed towards Linwood to around the farm, not really knowing what assist the family. had just happened.” While the majority of animals were With the farm set over a ¼ mile off the road, their remote location from town and the number of downed trees everywhere, the farm was inaccessible to all vehicles. The girls, who were still in Wisconsin at this time, had heard about the tornado and turned on the TV and saw the large commercial nursery close to farm destroyed. Rob and Lisa told the girls to stay in Wisconsin that night because they didn’t want them driving in the dark and into the line of storms still present. Taylor connected with family friend Christy Ratliff, who lived about 90 minutes away. She and her husband Ron brought two trailers and as many halters as they could grab and made the trip to Linwood. “Since we were losing daylight, the plan was to load up any injured cows that night and anyone we could catch,” Lisa said. “We had friends who had walked for miles to get to us not knowing if we were alive or dead, and then they were helping catch cows!”

unharmed, two cows were killed the night of the tornado, and another 18 animals either died or were euthanized in the days following. Unfortunately, two of the family’s best cows were included in that statistic. Ratliff Minister Midgee EX-94 was one of the first cows that Rob and Lisa found that night, and she had an obvious broken leg. “I told everyone that I would be the only person to put down a cow, and that we would give them all a fighting chance if there was one to have,” Rob lamented. Midgee, who was the family’s newest EX-94 cow had just won Reserve Grand Champion honors for Erin and Sophie at the Southern National Junior Show in Stillwater, OK, the month prior. Midgee was also Nominated Junior AllAmerican 5-Year-Old in 2018. LC Valentino Clover EX-94 wasn’t found till the next morning and was over a ½ mile from the farm. Unfortunately, Clover had obvious injuries, but the family put all their efforts into saving her. After a consultation

with a vet, ultimately it was decided her injuries were too severe and they made the difficult decision to put her down. The “Joplin Syndicate” was started by Katrina Cobb after Dusty & Nicole Schirm donated Ho-Crawf Andreas Joplin to the Leach family. All money raised was also donated to help them with expenses incurred from the storm.

Just days after the storm, Katrina Cobb of Red Dirt Genetics in Oklahoma organized an online auction to help raise funds for the Leach family. Various items were donated from dairy companies and individuals from around the U.S. The largest donation came from Dusty and Nicole Schirm of Ohio, who donated Ho-Crawf Andreas Joplin, the 2018 AJCA All American Spring Calf, to the auction. This quickly turned into the “Joplin Syndicate,” where not only were the proceeds all donated to the Leach COWSMOPOLITAN Winter Edition 2019 » 51

Another group that have tried to help the Leach family “rebuild” what they’ve lost was Apple Partners of Lanark, IL. They contacted Rob and Lisa and generously donated three Warrior Sexed IVF embryos from non other than KHW Regiment Apple-Red-ET EX-96 DOM. Apple’s offspring have been foundation animals for herds The Leach family with several of the members of the “Visionary” across the world, and the Leach Syndicate that Willis Gunst helped spearhead to help the family rebuild family is excited to hopefully add her genetics to Lin-Crest Farm. part of what they lost on May 28. I texted Dusty and asked him to call me after it was announced in Facebook,” Rob commented. “When he called, I couldn’t thank him enough but told him it wasn’t necessary, and it was too generous. He was adamant that he and Nicole wanted to do this. I remember him saying ‘You have kids, we have kids, it’s just the right thing to do.’” Sophie exhibited Joplin in Louisville, placing 2nd in the Junior Show, and named Reserve Junior All American Spring Yearling. As if Louisville hadn’t already exceeded the family’s expectations, one last moment pushed it over the edge. Willis Gunst, who has been good friends with Rob and Lisa for years, and where the girls were at during the tornado, wanted to organize something for the family. In talking to Tim, Barb and Kyle Natzke of Wisconsin, they formed a plan to help “rebuild” the outstanding cattle they lost during the storm. At the National Holstein Convention, Willis proudly wore a sticker that said: “Ask me how you can help the Leach family!” Rob and Lisa didn’t know what he was up to, and never could have imagined what would come to fruition through his efforts.

While the donations and generosity have been in different forms and from all over the world, Rob and Lisa are truly humbled. “We know that we’ll never be able to repay everyone, and we just hope that others never have to experience something like this from our perspective,” Rob said. “We never once received a vet bill for any of the work that was done, and a pharmaceutical company stepped up and donated all of the medication that was used. Cargill and Purina assisted with grain and nutrition needs and Calf-Tel generously replaced all of our hutches that were destroyed.” So, what’s next for Lin-Crest farm? The family has started the rebuilding process,

While Rob was watching the line at Louisville, Kyle came over and asked him to look at another heifer for the girls to show in the Junior Show. Standing next to her was a fuzzy summer calf that Kyle pointed out to Rob and told him it was a maternal sister to Ratliff’s Vision cow, a granddaughter of EX-97 Veronica. “And what would you say if I told you that she is yours now?” Kyle joked. But, Kyle wasn’t joking. The Visionary Syndicate, as it became known as, purchased the calf from Johnathan Heinsohn, Red Carpet Genetics in Illinois, who made the heifer available at Christy Ratliff with Page-Crest Virtuoso 148 during the a very special price for the group. 2019 National Jersey Jug Futurity. but it is a slow one. They were unable to crop farm at all in 2019, and they are still worried about debris in those fields, so clean-up continues. They’ve had to drain their ponds and re-run all electric, sewer and gas lines. Work on a new commodity barn is underway, and they hope to build four more barns in the future. “It would be amazing to be milking again by the 1-year anniversary,” Lisa commented, “but there is a lot that has to happen beforehand.” The family does plan on downsizing their herd, however. “Insurance doesn’t cover everything, and we still have to be able to cash-flow as a farm after this is done,” Rob said. Between the various fundraising that individuals had for them at shows, sales and the National Jersey Convention, Rob and Lisa cannot say enough good things about all of the strangers that have help them.“We don’t want to overwhelm people with our story though,” Rob remarked. “And our greatest fear is that we won’t seem grateful enough.” Yet, to outsiders looking in, ungrateful is not a word used to describe the Leach family. Humble, kind and “stronger than the storm” are just a few that most would associate with Rob, Lisa, Taylor, Erin and Sophie Leach. By Julie Ashton

Healthline

MAKE MILK QUALITY A PRIORITY Outstanding milk quality herds, regardless of size, have several things in common. To keep somatic cell count (SCC) low, they follow detailed protocols and make it a goal to assure all employees understand the importance of working together every day to maximize milk quality. Developing a protocol to monitor for mastitis, successfully treating infections and managing a cow’s environment play a role. FINE-TUNE MASTITIS MONITORING Lactating cows with subclinical mastitis may show no clinical signs or visual changes in the milk for weeks but have SCCs greater than 200,000 cells per milliliter. Monthly Dairy Herd Improvement (DHI) testing provides dairies with the ability to track trends in milk production and investigate changes so issues can be addressed. DHI reports also identify cows with higher-than-desirable SCCs as well as cows that have been chronically infected, making it simpler to identify individual cows for further testing. One of the best ways to detect mastitis is by implementing a test/culture system (e.g., California Mastitis Test [CMT]), which is a measure of the inflammation within a quarter. When done early, CMT can help identify infection before it impacts performance and milk quality. CULTURE MILK TO TARGET TREATMENT After individual cows have been identified, the only way to know what pathogens are impacting milk quality is to culture milk samples. You can work with your vet clinic to run cultures or train someone on your dairy on on-farm culture testing and interpreting results. Culture tests are relatively inexpensive, assure the correct animals are treated and help reduce unneeded antibiotic use. Positive test results identify mastitis as contagious or environmental. Contagious infections spread between cows and reveal the presence of gram-positive pathogens, such as those in the streptococcus and staphylococcus families. Environmental pathogens come from sources such as bedding and reveal gram-negative bacteria are present, such as E. coli. Cows often fight off gram-negative infections without intervention, but without treatment, gram-positive infections can become chronic and need immediate attention. ENSURE TREATMENT SUCCESS Once mastitis is detected in lactating cows, deploying an effective cure is critical. Using an intramammary antibiotic like Amoxi-Mast® effectively treats mastitis quickly and limits the circulation of infections in the herd. With an 86% cure rate for Streptococcus agalactiae1 and an economical 60-hour milk withhold, this product with short-tip tubes is proven to yield higher cure rates and fewer new infections.2 54 « COWSMOPOLITAN Winter Edition 2019

Milk taken from animals during treatment and for 60 hours after the last treatment must not be used for food. Treated animals must not be slaughtered for food purposes within 12 days after the last treatment. For complete information, refer to the product label. Monitoring treatment success assures the protocol is working and results in a lower relapse rate. Follow through on all By Todd Bilby, Ph.D., M.S., Associate treatments even if milk quality Director of Ruminant Technical Services, Merck Animal Health improves after one treatment. CONTROLLING ENVIRONMENTAL INFECTIONS If milk culture results reveal gram-negative pathogens are present, then a thorough review of management practices is necessary. The goal is to create an environment in which it is hard for these organisms to survive. Train employees on the importance of keeping cows and their bedding clean and dry, as well as keeping milking equipment running and cleaned properly. Milk contagious cows last and move infected cows to a different area to reduce the spread of contagious organisms. Make sure the teat dip is effective against the organism you are combating and that employees have been trained on proper teat coverage. Since milk film harbors bacteria, make sure employees understand the importance of removing milk film from the teat before milking. Lower SCCs are important to your dairy’s success. Benefits include increased milk production, improved reproductive performance and longer milk shelf life. By monitoring milk quality, identifying the pathogens that are causing mastitis and appropriately treating clinical cases, you’ll keep your dairy running smoothly. Talk with your veterinarian to develop a plan that achieves the goal of high-quality milk production on your farm. References: 1. Wilson, DJ et al. ART AND BETTY OOSTDAM, WITH THEIR SONS MARK (left) AND JOHN, JOHN’S WIFE LAUREN, AND THEIR SONS JOHN MICHAEL (left) AND JOSHUA, AT THEIR DAIRY IN SAN JACINTO, CALIF.

“When you work with Pietersma & Company you shake hands and the deal is done. You know it’s going to happen and you know there won’t be any surprises. How much better would the world be if there were more people who have the integrity and professionalism that Ron Pietersma and Tim Souza do, and could do business that way? “We’re not sure how long our family has worked with Ron Pietersma, both as a buyer and a seller. It’s at least 30 years and maybe 40. My dad was first, then me, and now our son. When a local well known herd of very high quality cows became available, Ron called and asked if we were interested. We’re glad he did, because we were. As usual, everything went fast and smooth. “Ten days after he called, the cows arrived, and Tim was even there to help load them. They are excellent cows and they are doing well for us.” – Art, Betty and John Oostdam
