BEN HAMILTON
IT’S AROUND this time of year that I like to find out when all the Oscar hopefuls will be hitting the screens – and a quick glance reveals that February is the month to make the cinema your second home. It’s good timing – I like to think that intelligent film-goers are targeted when it’s dark and cold, and the morons when it’s bright and sunny. So in a very particular order, here’s this winter’s Oscar nominees and, just in case you like a bet, the latest odds (looks like the smart money’s on The Artist and Hugo). December sees the premieres of David Fincher’s remake of the Stieg Larsson adaptation, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (21 Dec, 16s), and Moneyball (15 Dec, 20s), which is directed by Bennett Miller (Capote) and stars Brad Pitt as a cashstrapped baseball coach making a splash with his clever stats. January sees the release of Stephen Spielberg’s War Horse (26 Jan, 11/4, yes, the main character’s a horse) and Clint Eastwood’s J Edgar (19 Jan, 8s) starring Leonardo Di-
Caprio, who is apparently brilliant, but not enough to save the film. Four films debut in February: The Artist (9 Feb, 11/5), The Descendants (16 Feb, 10/3), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (9 Feb, 14s) and The Iron Lady (23 Feb, 28s). While the British films probably don’t have a chance – TTSS came out months ago elsewhere and has had brilliant reviews across the board, and Meryl Streep really nails Mrs T down to a T so expect her to win – the other two are strong candidates. The Descendants is directed by Alexander Payne (Sideways), a filmmaker with a fondness for estranged characters and profound observation, and sees George Clooney play a divorcee trying to reconnect with his kids. While The Artist, a first US film for French director Michel Hazanavicius, sees two unknown leads, and a strong supporting cast, recreate the silent Hollywood era. And finally in March, we await Clooney’s poorly-received, well timed Ides of March (15 March, 25s), Hugo (15 March, 6s) and Extremely Loud and Close (1 March, 8s). Martin Scorsese’s Hugo is a mystery set at a 1930s Parisian station, with an extremely Britishheavy cast, while Stephen Daldry’s ELAC could finally be the 9/11 film that America has been crying out for. I cannot print the premise through fear of bursting into tears.
Lock up your tea cosies! The Made in Sweden show is coming to Copenhagen and obviously enjoy a good brew
Carl Dance Festival
Dansehallerne, Pasteursvej 14-24, 1799 Cph V; starts Friday, ends Dec 11; 3329 1010, info@dansescenen.dk; www. dansehallerne.dk The Carl Dance Festival is here yet again, and this year’s programme is packed with shows for all ages. Without further ado, here are three of the highlights from this year’s week of dance.
Hvem kommer først: sommer eller vinter? (Who comes first: summer or winter?)
Lille Carl, Pasteursvej 20; starts Fri, ends Wed, performances Fri 15:00, Sat 11:30, Sun 10:00, Mon-Wed 17:00; tickets 80kr, kids 50kr; duration 25 mins Who comes first: summer or winter? is a show for two to six-year-olds about experiencing nature and its mysteries. Watch the changes in the year passing by as the four seasons dance across the stage. This show is all about feeling nature, and the children will experience what happens when the seasons change - how the body reacts when it’s cold. And all this in a mix of movement, sound and pictures, which will fascinate everyone, young and old.
Performance Mozart
Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; ends Jan 15, performances Sat 17:00, Mon, Tue &Thu 20:00; tickets: 150– 360kr; www.bettynansen.dk The team behind the theatre gigs Gasolin’, Come Together and Bob Dylan are back. They’ve been given the ultimate challenge – to create a theatre show based on Mozart’s music. With a sense of timing and dizzying costumes, the unreasonable Cederholm & Co takes you on a journey through Mozart’s world of famous compositions, as you’ve never seen or heard them before. Rediscover Mozart’s big hits in a new guise with some fantastic singers and actors. EM
Made in Copenhagen
Store Carl; starts Wed, ends Dec 10, performances Wed-Thu 19:00, Dec 10 at 11:00 & 19:00; tickets 80kr, kids 50kr Dorte Olesen’s Made in Copenhagen is a performance for mature teenagers and adults, which the Swedish-based, Danishborn choreographer has adapted from her show Made in Sweden. It is a show about big feelings, teenage life and survival, and about what it means to be seen, or not to be. What happens when you introduce two different forms of art and let them run wild? Does creativity have a set age? Here you will experience the raw, honest language of the teenage creativity and see all their voices melt together and become one. Made in Copenhagen is a product of the dancers in it. The young professionals are not told what to do, but have been included in the process, adding to the originality of the show. Come and see a unity, and a bond on stage, which will spread to the floor and beyond. Made in Copenhagen is premiering at the Carl Dance Festival.
Livlægens Besøg (The Royal Physician visits)
Store Scene, Operaen, Ekvipagemestervej 10, 1438 Cph K; ends 13 Dec, performances at 19:30 on Fri, Tue, Dec 9, Dec 13; tickets 95-695kr; 160 mins including one intermission; in Danish with English supertitles; www.kglteater. dk This 2009 opera about Denmark’s greatest scandal - Johann Struensee, the German royal physician of Christian VII who usurped the mad king’s crown and place in his marital bed in the 1770s - is returning by popular demand. A flexible and vivid production, it is based on Per Oluf Enquist’s Swedish 1999 novel about the scandal, and is highly dramatic and emotional. It’s a historical honest creation that is inspirational and intense. KRG
The Nutcracker

Far Out takes you on a journey where dreams, hopes and catastrophes get intertwined in a show full of speed. Get up close and far out when nature meets our modern world. Far Out is premiering at Carl Dance Festival. For those interested, there will be dancing fun for the kids and free pancakes from 16:30 on December 5, 6, and 7. So come and have a bite and boogie along to the balloon dance, echo dance and mirror dance. Enjoy! JAZZ K W

The Nutcracker is the magical story of a girl named Clara who falls asleep on Christmas Eve. She suddenly wakes to find herself in a world where she meets the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Nutcracker Prince. This is the first time the Royal Ballet Company will perform choreographer George Balanchine’s famous version. Along with Tchaikovsky’s legendary orchestral work and a new set design by Briton Anthony Ward, expect this ballet to reach new heights this Christmas. EM

Lille Scene, Republique, Østerfælled Torv 34, Cph Ø; ends Sun, performances at 20:00; tickets 200–295kr, sold out – check internet forums; www.republique.dk Iconic American singer Tom Waits has been re-envisioned by a troop of artistically daring French Canadians. Whether you’re a Waits fan, or just a fan of art running rampant, this could be the event for you. The Quebec-based L’Orchestre d’Hommes-Orhestres will recreate Waits’s music using all varieties of instruments, real and invented. Many of Waites’s greatest hits were covered by other great performers - think ‘Jersey Girl’ by Bruce Springsteen and ‘Downtown Train’ by Rod Stewart – but being covered using household utensils as instruments … this is a first! AT THE RISK of breaking a bone … or a few … take to the rinks this season and experience some winter magic at its best! Even if you’re afraid of falling, find a special (and strong) someone to hold onto and turn it into a little romantic jaunt. There’s a range of rinks all over the city with many offering skates for hire by the hour. If you’re keen for your feet to stay on solid ground though, head along to Blågårds Plads and become an ice hockey spectator!

Toftegårds Plads has long been a dead grey space with a number of architectural competitions aimed at coming up with a solution for this dead area. This ice rink has provided that much needed solution, and at 1500 sqm this rink is big, big, big! With Valby Culture Centre as its nearest neighbour, you can pop over and grab some hot chocolate in between pirouettes on the ice.

The new CO2-friendly rink is made of wax, not water, for prime skating conditions. Although it’s free of charge, there’s no skate rental, so bring your own skates.

Described as a reinterpretation of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, The Bollywood Trip is a love story told via musical comedy that takes the audience through the vast range of human emotions. The performance fuses Bollywood dancing and Danish humour - a tactic not often seen on the Denmark stages. It’s refreshingly fun while parading the contradictions of west versus east, medicine versus love, crazy versus normal, and fixation versus liberation. JS

post-oasis, noel’s as free as a high flying bird
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
DR Byen Concert house Saturday 20:00; 195kr – 415kr www.billetlugen.dk www.noelgallagher.com
s
ay what you will about the infamous Gallagher brothers, but it’s clear they’ve made their mark on rock and roll. The fact that almost everyone has an opinion, one way or the other, reflects their remarkable ability to either get under your skin or put a smile on your face. with the last Oasis release a distant memory, Noel Gallagher has struck out on his own, keeping his unmistakable brand of Brit
rock alive and kicking. while Liam Gallagher may be the charismatic frontman, there’s no denying that Noel is the brains of the pair. It was his songwriting ability that saw Oasis scale those heights throughout the ´90s, and his dedication to their music that saw the band continue through countless break-ups and other (numerous) misadventures. It’s perhaps unsurprising that he has broken out on his own, stringing together a talented array of musicians to support him. The high Flying Birds first came together in 2010, following the much publicised split of Oasis. with Oasis experiencing what would be the last of their death throws, news broke
that Noel was preparing a solo album, drawing upon more than ten years of songwriting. after a strenuous two-year recording process in both the UK and the States, Noel released the self-titled album in October this year, creating with it an international success that has critics clamouring with praise. There’s no denying that the high Flying Birds sound a bit like Oasis, but this is to be expected. There are a range of catchy pop songs with well-crafted lyrics that easily set the foot tapping, and Gallagher’s voice has become so well recognised, it’s easy to think you’ve heard some of the tracks before. having said that, there are differences and this is where the magic lies.
Unrestrained by the demands of the former supergroup, the album sees Noel writing songs with a more free and liberal direction. There is more reference to his influences and an overall cleaner sound that comes from his desire to produce a more coherent record. Gone are the references to drugs and other rock clichés, as he sings about topics of substance, with supporting instrumentation that would never have made it onto an Oasis record. tracks like ‘Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks’ and ‘The Death of you and Me’ are highlights. The former contains a wonderful brass component, playing over a Beatlesque melody that unashamedly pays homage to that other British
super group. ‘The Death of you and Me’ is a well crafted and sophisticated track, the product of a musician with a clear sense of direction and the know-how to deliver it. Noel Gallagher has spent the majority of his career facing comparisons to other musicians. his over-publicised relationship with his brother, coupled with the media’s obsession with them, have often overshadowed the music he produces. Now, free from the shackles of a band that perhaps grew too big for itself, Noel Gallagher is able to show the world what he still has to offer. It’s now time for others to compare themselves to him. ive words: Happy boys and happy girls. You either love them or hate them, but for all the haters out there, Aqua are one of the only bands in the world who can sell tickets on the back of cheesy pop ballads and ridiculous lyrics - all while being ‘over the hill’. Beginning with a few golden oldies, such as ‘Cartoon Heroes’ and ‘dr Jones’, the foursome reminded fans that they still had the Midas touch. Lead singer Lene Nystrøm, who still doesn’t look a day over 25, showed her true professionalism, delivering a high-energy, crowd-pleasing ball-buster of a concert. And she wasn’t afraid to let her fans know it. “it was 17 years ago we formed Aqua, and we’ve never had as much fun as we’re having now!” she yelled. New singles such as ‘viva Las vegas’, ‘Party Patrol ‘and ‘dirty Little Pop song’ didn’t

exactly please the crowd – they had more of an electronic rock feel with a heavy bass that didn’t quite suit Aqua’s pure pop sound. Nystrøm quickly realised the lack of positive response from the crowd and redeemed herself by banging out some old hits such as ‘Turn Back Time’ and ‘Lollipop (Candyman)’. Aqua isn’t your usual pop band so it’s no wonder the mix of fans was equally weird. The crowd looked more like they were part of some crazy family reunion. eight-year-old girls
bobbed their heads as they stood next to men old enough to be their grandfather, both parties mouthing the words to ‘Fuck me like a robot’. The plastic pop sensations couldn’t resist ending the night with their 1997 hit ‘Barbie Girl’. The song that topped the charts around the world in 1997 seems to have remained number one in the hearts of fans for 14 years. it would be an understatement to say the crowd went wild. Five minutes worth of applause and Aqua were back on
again … as if they could resist. Playing three more numbers, their last rendition was ‘Around the world’, in which they hit the base hard and tried to create a deadmau5 beat. A final drum finale stirred up fans who offered an unending mammoth of an applause that would have been more appropriate for the last day of roskilde than a pop band that sings about toys. “what a great honour it is to play for you”, Nystrøm yelled. And the crowd was honored that they did. Emily mclEan

The bright lights of Copenhagen LIGHT is a vital source to good health – but where does one go when the light of the day gives way or daily life appears in bland nuances? Join us on our quest for lamps and sources of light at the museums in Copenhagen. And there was light – in the city The floor is shaking and the glass tables are vibrating. The noise is overwhelming. The great pistons are sliding up and down steadily inside the tubes, and the smell of oil is spreading through the room. It is Sunday at Dieselhouse (Elværksvej 50, 2450 Cph SV), and the engineer – dressed in his grey boiler suit – has just started the enormous engine, which was completed in 1933 and managed for 30 years to hold the title of world’s largest engine. The diesel engine in Sydhavnen ensured sustained electricity for the city during peak times, and enabled the electrification of Copenhagen’s streets. The outsized engine weighs a whopping 1,400 tonnes, or as much as 280 elephants (!), and regardless of any prior knowledge of engines one might have, it is a fascinating experience to witness it roaring and rumbling on the first and third Sunday of every month at 11am. DieselHouse is open from 10am to 1:30pm o’clock, and entry is free. Copenhagen’s tropical oasis You happen to think the summer went a little too fast, and you have long used up the travel budget. PH-lamp: essential Danish design “The PH-lamp is not a whim. The PHlamp is not a thing of fashion. It is a basic such as a telephone, a gas stove, a toothbrush.” Such were the austere words of Poul Henningsen when he presented his own invention in an advertisement text in the 1930s. All the same, what he claimed was true. The PH-lamp with its unique lampshade display system was not merely a thing of fashion, but was crucial in making Denmark globally known as a designer nation. Poul Henningsen – the architect, the cultural critic and the revue writer – was a partisan of a functionalistic, economical and democratic design. Today the PH-lamp is a collector’s item and the costs of the individual models have gone through the roof.

However, at Design Museum Danmark on Bredgade, you have plenty of opportunites to admire the different products of PH. In 1926, when the architect Kaare Klint completed the remodelling of the museum, which previously had been a hospital, he chose PH as the lightning contractor. It means that to this day one can still experience parts of the original lightning arrangements, which accounted for no less than 80 lamps. Moreover, the museum has decided to honour the light maker in a small, separate exhibition, where one can – besides experiencing the classical PH-model PH5, which radiates a pleasant light upon the work surfaces – get acquainted with ‘The Cone’, ‘Contrast’, ‘Plate’ and study blueprints and drawings of selected models. Rømer, the worldrenowned astronomer and scientist, owned no fewer than two observatories, which were situated in the centre of Copenhagen. He deemed the first of the two, Rundetaarn, to be unfit as the pealing of the church bells of Trinitas were interfering with his work, and at the other one, situated at St Kannikestræde, he could not see the stars even though he did saw off a piece of the opposite neighbour’s roof. This year’s guest designers include Anne Black, Superlove and TriCot Tage. This is your one-stop shop for jewellery, linens, clothing, pillows, ceramics and a whole lot more. Father Christmas gets inspiration here. EM Christmas art sale Blågårdsgade 14 st.tv, 2200 Cph N; Thu 12:00 till late Enjoy music and drinks at this independent pop up gallery as well as affordable screenprints and original artwork up for grabs. AR Art bazaar School of Visual Art, Charlottenborg basement cafeteria, Kongens Nytorv 1, Cph K; Sat 10:00–17:00 The talented students here have done away with impressing their teachers and are looking to impress you with their wide variety of creations. Everything from big to small works of art, ceramics, sculptures, graphics, paintings and drawings will be on sale. This school has produced some big names over the years such as Olafur Eliasson and Jeppe Hein. So this is the place to make that first step into art collecting at a reasonable price! EM
JUST OFF STRØGET and in spitting distance from the canals, an unobtrusive sign hangs above a single closed door. If you didn’t know what you were looking for, you could easily walk past one of Copenhagen’s most sophisticated bars. Inside, a stylish woman is perched at the metallic bar top, tapping away at her macbook and sipping a champagne cocktail. A group of elegant middleaged women chatter away on the leather couches in the small side room. A trendy couple sit at the back, unwinding with some micro-brewed beers. The lone, spunky-haired bartender mixes drinks with ease. The place feels edgy, the lights are low, and the atmosphere slightly elitist. Admittedly, it takes a little bit of time to adjust to this slick little enclave of cool. If you aren’t between 30 and 50, and a hip professional, you might feel a little out of place to start. Don’t let that stop you though – after a little bit of time and a few of their incredible cocktails, you’ll soon be relaxed and you won’t want to leave. We order an espresso martini and a rosehip and hibiscus margarita. The inclusion of orange liquor in the martini is a twist on an old classic. Reminiscent of Terry’s Chocolate Oranges, the addition is well appreciated. The margarita is worlds apart from what one might expect from the ubiquitous Mexican cocktail, but in the best way possible. It’s perfectly bitter, wonderfully cold and refreshing and, like most things in this bar, a refined version of something familiar. We try two more cocktails.
Answers on a postcard regarding which one the lady had
The ‘lemon meringue’ has a strong hit of limoncello and is indulgently creamy and sweet – perhaps too much so. The ‘petite louise’ on the other hand is a stunning combination of aperol, elderflower liquor, champagne, rosemary and vermouth. With a selection of only two wines by the bottle, K-Bar is most definitely a cocktail bar. James Bond himself would be spoilt for choice by the hefty and creative martini list. Saffron martini, anyone? The bar also has an impressive whisky list, a selection of micro-brewed Danish beers on tap and a small menu of gourmet bar snacks. The music here is also a particular highlight. It’s a chilledout and mellow mix that along with the strong cocktails helps you to fully unwind. The décor is minimalist with
low wooden tables and leather couches. Modern art – available for purchase – adorns the walls. K-Bar is an exclusive cocoon that provides an escape from the cold drudgery of the outside world. You could spend hours here, enjoying the superb cocktails and the intimate atmosphere. It would be a perfect place to impress business partners, clients or a special date. Saying that, the attitude of the place is not particularly warm and welcoming. The service is offhand and aloof, and the clientele are a touch pretentious. However, the emphasis here is on privacy and the right for every patron to be able to enjoy a killer cocktail away from the masses. If that’s what you’re looking for, this is the place. KEVIN PONNIAH

HANS AND GRETEL were trapped in a house like this. But if you make your own you can omit the wicked witch and in this way it’ll be safe. Even though you cover the house with sweets and sugar, you won’t be punished for it. Or you might, but in a different way. You’ll be punished with dust. It will gather in every little sticky corner, and it will make it look less edible although everyone under ten will disagree. For them, sugar is delicious no matter what. To illustrate my point, I used to eat chocolates that had fallen under the seats in my mom’s car. But whether you decide to eat the house after Christmas or not, it’s a fun thing to bake and to decorate. Make it with friends - alcohol will
add to the experience, and to the time spent making it, and to the architecture. Try to make your own dough. It’s not that hard and it’ll taste nicer and you get to add as much pepper and ginger as you like. Professionals draw the house on a computer. I make stencils of baking paper and cut the dough accordingly. When you shop for ingredients you must remember to buy a lot of sweets like marshmallows, liquorice, wine gums, chocolate Santas, marzipan pigs, and anything else that can be used to express your own gingerbread vision. Here’s how to make the dough. The rest is up to you.

Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th. dk; 1,250kr per person 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. to wrap it in plastic foil and leave it in the fridge for something like ten hours. Step one in the building process is to make your ball of dough flat, and if you don’t have the proper tool for this a washed wine bottle works. Dust it and the table with some flour, and once you’re done you can put your stencils on top of the dough and start cutting. Bake them at 170 degrees for ten to 12 minutes and let them cool before you dip them in melted sugar and glue them together with the other parts of the house. When it’s time to decorate you should try to fit as many sweets in as possible, at least that’s usually my main ambition. Dip the toes of marzipan pigs into melted sugar and stick them on the roof and place small chocolate Santas in the chimney or in the garden and colour the house with wine gums and make snow out of melted marshmellows.

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231 www.dalaman.dk; three-course menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open MonSat 12:00-22:00, pub open Mon-Thu 12:00-24:00, FriSat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; www.brewpub.dk; three-course lunch menu 155kr The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre LB

Five courses at once - an all-out onslaught on your taste buds
Jerusalem artichokes; Tartar of organic veal with salted peaches and rye bread croutons; and Glazed pork cheeks with mushrooms, chestnuts and lingonberries. The pork cheeks were as sweetly palatable as the cod composition was deliciously fresh. Each course seemed to insist on its gastronomic identity as if the four others were mere supporting acts. No redundancy there, just a wealth of ‘long’ flavours (as they say in the wine world) blending into a multidimensional symphonic experience on your palate. My guest had as her fourth and fifth

SUNDAY BRUNCH
REGULAR READERS of InOut will already know there are good reasons for heading to Ekvipagemestervej on the island of Holmen. This country’s most legendary building projects in recent history, and one of the world’s most modern opera houses, is nothing less than stunning up close. Besides delivering when it comes to opera, the place is a high-water mark of luxury and pleasant eccentricity. Much colourful folklore and hearsay surrounds the Copenhagen Opera House: from how its donator, the 90-something Danish shipping magnate Mærsk McKinney Møller, has personally test-sat a number of cushioned seats to single out the comfiest, to how the main curtain by Per Arnoldi is impossible to photograph due to optical tricks that confuse the camera. And the wall tiles indoors and out each ring a different tone when rapped with knuckles. Of course a grand and fabulous place like that needs a restaurant – and not just any. The gourmet restaurant and chocolatier Bojesen has made it its official mission to personally connect with guests and to exceed their expectations every time. It only operates in places with a significant history or meaningful setting. One meeting with Møller later and we can now enjoy the symbiosis. High above the foyer, the restaurant inhabits all of the fifth floor, and tables are spread out to command a breathtaking 180 degree view of the Copenhagen skyline to the south-southeast. It’s even possible to take a romantic stroll on a giant balcony outside the windows. You’ll be closer to the sunset there, at liberty to smoke and, in case of rain, you’ll be dry under the majestic canopy roof. The first treat at the table was the exquisite Champagne NV Brut – DuvalLeroy (at 395kr a half-bottle), an absolute keeper and a great start to an innovative, personal and unpretentious gastronomic performance. Unlike at most pedestrian restaurants, time isn’t endless – for those with opera tickets anyway – so logistical corners have been cut to maximise the time spent actually enjoying food and wine. Five courses are served in one go, ingeniously arranged on a classy tray to suggest (what with the bubbly and all) how tapas is probably served in heaven. The menu changes monthly. My fives were the ‘Greens + Sea + Field’ selection (the meat option) that comprised Marinated beetroot with goats cheese crème; Baked onions and pickled potatoes with cress crème; Salad of cod and
courses Salted scallops with a salad of Brussels sprouts, apples and hazelnuts, and Grilled halibut with pumpkin, capers and dill. Part and parcel of Bojesen’s ‘classic food with a twist’ concept is a culinary philosophy placing great emphasis on taste. It will make or break a meal, if off or lacking by just a fraction. Enjoyment and gratification largely depends on it. As we jumped from Greens to Sea to Field it became obvious that this maxim was honoured in the kitchen that night. No less so when we reached the cake, which was truly delicious.
The wines – one white, one red – were sensational: a 2010 Villa Maria Private Bin Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (380kr a bottle) and a 2005/6 Brunello di Montalcino from Tuscany (595kr a bottle). Careful though, enjoy responsibly – you don’t want to be drunk watching Mozart or Wagner. However, as far as a proper meal for a night of opera, I’d say you need look no further.

Now the Auteur Superior on account of his talent MARK WALKER
NEDS Dir: Peter Mullan; UK/France/ Italy drama, 2010, 124 mins; Conor McCarron, Greg Forrest, Joe Szula, Gary Lewis, Peter Mullan
Premiered December 01 Playing Vester Vov Vov, Empire Bio, Gentofte Kino
N
EDS (Non Educated Delinquents) traces the descent of a bright boy to whose cherubic features we are introduced bathed in warm sunlight. The film is perhaps best understood through the Christian spectrum of good to evil. John McGill (played by Forrest and then McCarron) is sweet natured and naturally gifted but a dark and dangerous environment conspires to break him down, just as it seems to have broken his older brother and father before him. In an early scene, John who has just moved to this 1970s Glaswegian neighbourhood, is unjustly placed in a class below that to which he is academically suited on account of his elder brother’s reputation as a gang leader. It soon becomes clear that John will need to work harder than the other boys in order to escape the hellish fate to which his teachers and many others have already consigned him. Director Peter Mullan quickly establishes this as as a film about place - or rather being placed. Notions of displacement, of not fitting in, reoccur throughout the film. Better known for such performances as the lead in Ken Loach’s My Name Is Joe (1998), the acclaimed actor’s previous spells behind the camera resulted in Orphans (1998) and later The Magdelene Sisters (2002).
In a bid to get Glasgow’s disaffected youth off the street the trainer shows them a few dance steps that could lead to a part in the Broadway hit Riverdance The youngest in a Roman Catholic family of six, Mullan grew up in Glasgow after his family moved from the north of Scotland and, like his creation John McGill, he spent a brief spell with a street gang. Despite similarities between his life and the film, Mullan insists that NEDS is “personal but not wholly autobiographical”. In his small but pivitol role as John’s abusive, alchoholic father, Mullan teeters close to the edge of archetype before delivering a succession of devastatingly honest moments that linger in the mind long

after you leave the theatre. NEDS will undoubtedly draw comparisons to This is England, not least because it has been marketed as ‘This is Scotland’ (somewhat deservedly). However, unlike Shane Meadow’s autobiographical English bulldog, Mullan’s bite is just as fullblooded as his bark, with more brains to boot. In a superficial sense it is perhaps more closely related to Richard Jobson’s 16 years of Alcohol, but it easily surpasses that film in every respect. NEDS joins a pantheon of great

his own script. However, whatever NEDS might lack in visual poetry it more than makes up for in heart and balls. While it evokes many classic films on account of the subject matter and setting, it does so with such a sense of urgency and a bloody ferocity that it ends up feeling quite unlike any of them. NEDS is not a film for everyone, but if you appreciate the genre, it’s as good a film as you’re likely to see or have seen this year at the cinema. So, if you’ve the stomach, your soul will be greatly rewarded.

works in that most British of genres: social realism. The obligatory tyrannical father played by Mullan himself brings to mind Pete Posthlewaite in Terence Davies’ seminal Distant Voices, Still Lives while the sense of isolation recalls the young outsider from Ken Loach’s Kes. One might argue that this film lacks the deftness of touch of Kes - its visual lyricism. This shortcoming can perhaps be attributed to the emotional distance Loach could afford from his film’s source novel - a proximity that writer/director Mullan did not have from

OU HAVE PROBABLY heard the term ‘hysterical’. You may even associate the term as typically describing women. What you may not know is that the original term, hysteria, was a disease that only affected women. It was consid-
ered a disease from 4th century BC Greece up until the 1950s. Hysteria caused women to act in many different ways: frigidity, nymphomania, anxiety, depression, the list goes on and on. It describes any woman who acts irrationally or emotionally, which is to say all women. Naturally, the disease had treatments. At the end of the 19th century in Victorian Britain, Mortimer Granville developed the best treatment to date: the modern-day vibrator. And that’s exactly what the film Hysteria is about. The film takes place in the 1880s, the peak of Victorianism and the start of the electrical age. Granville (Dancy) loses his job because he believes in
‘germ theory’ at a time when leeching was all the craze. He ends up getting a job with Dr. Dalrymple (Pryce), who only treats hysterical women. With a little help from his eccentric, wealthy friend (Everett), Granville manages to create the vibrator. The film could have been extremely good. Hysteria as a disease is a very interesting and unusual topic. It was daring to create a film like this as a romantic comedy. Unfortunately, the film falls short in that it squeezes what was a fascinating true story into the standard format of the romantic comedy. The film is utterly predictable and very cheesy at the climax (no pun intended).
The acting in Hysteria was enjoyable, although the characters didn’t seem particularly complex. Each character fitted into the mould of the romantic comedy, and I suspect you can guess who is who. Everyone was charming, though it may just have been the British accents. Also, I didn’t actually find Hysteria that funny. The comedy was either obvious or supposed to be found in the ridiculousness of what people believed back then. I suppose it is better to laugh than to cry, but in the end, I simply found it rather depressing that women were so oppressed. ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

New this Week Immortals Dir: Tarsem Singh; 2011; 110 mins; Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke and John Hurt To put it bluntly, Immortals is a sprawling epic cobbled out of faux-Greek mythology. The brutal King Hyperion and his murderous army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason vows to avenge the death of his mother, leading to a final desperate battle for the future of humanity. The director takes an ultra-stylised approach with each shot gobsmacking the eye, but sadly its impact stands alone and never carries over to the next image. And when it comes to the actors, bigger credit ought to go to their personal trainers than their drama teachers. EM
In Time Dir: Andrew Niccol; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy In the not-too-distant future the aging gene has been switched off. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency – the rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. Timberlake plays an heir to a fortune of extra time who ends up fleeing the corrupt police force known as the Timekeepers. Despite the skimpy plot the film’s storyline means no one looks older than 25, making for a very attractive cast. While the looks may be hot the
action scenes are not – most are blatantly mundane at times. As one reviewer said “In Time fills its dynamic, sprawling universe with about as much character and drama as a half-hour game of Sim City.” EM
Spy Kids 4D: All the Time in the World Dir: Robert Rodriguez; 2011; 89 mins; Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven and Joel McHale As if 3D wasn’t enough, now there’s 4D which consists of a scratch ‘n’ sniff card that corresponds to certain points in the movie. Frankly the card smells like nothing but cardboard, though given that half the odors were of the diaper bomb variety, that was fine. The plot goes that Marissa (Alba) - a retired spy juggling motherhood - has her world turned upside down when a maniacal timekeeper threatens to take over the planet. An endless series of obscure jokes sap the charm out of nearly every scene, resulting in a chintzy adventure that could have gone straight to DVD. The fourth Spy Kids should only be seen when it really does feel like you have all the time in the world. EM
Book Your Tickets 50/50 Dir: Jonathan Levine; US dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard The ability to get laughs out of an illness so devastating is dif-
ficult, and getting them without being cheesy or forced is a true work of genius. 50/50 has a surprisingly good vibe and makes for an excellent night out at the movies. 50/50 is the story of Adam (Gordon-Levitt) a 27-year-old diagnosed with a rare form of spinal cancer with a survival rate of 50 percent. The movie follows Adam as he copes not only with his disease but the reactions of those closest to him. KE
The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis From the opening credits to the very end, this film is a playful contradiction of old and new. Whilst the film very much stays true to the mythical and timeless world that Tintin author Hergé so masterfully created, the introduction of slick film techniques and 3D wizardry makes it a modern story for a modern audience. Directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg and produced by the super clever Sir Peter Jackson the film is action-packed, visually dazzling, and fantastically fun. JS
Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Make sure you’re in your seats early for this one or else you’ll miss one of the most brilliant opening scenes in a movie ...
ever. Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE
One Day (7) Dir: Lone Scherfig; UK/US drama, 2011,107 min; Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Patricia Clarkson Everyone could probably point to a past event of which the consequences have literally dictated who and where they are today. ‘One Day’ is a meditation on this theme with a bit more in the mix. The nicely interwoven themes, and the generally believable acting have the film living up to its own ambitious intentions, delivering an emotional punch in the gut. KRG
Avoid like the Plague Paranormal Activity 3 Dir: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman; US horror, 2011, 84 mins, Katie Featherston Just like with Paranormal Activity 2, the film has skipped the press screenings and saved the premiere for the people who count – the airheads who’ll watch any sequel because it’s a safe bet.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I Dir: Bill Condon; USA drama, 2011, 117 mins; Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner Pattinson gives his usual sultry, overly dramatic performance,
except now he’s perfected the art of the sulking pout. Stewart, still just as annoying as the shy, awkward teenager might be carrying a half vampire baby, but all we get is one-dimensional Bella, just with a bigger belly. EM
Also Playing Contagion Dir: Stephen Soderbergh; US thriller/drama 2011, 118mins; Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Jude Law Contagion is rather like the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand - in that there’s a long list of well known faces; the end is nigh; and some sort of uber-flu is to blame. The film also functions more like a bird’s eye view - rather than an intimate human account - leaving the audience uninvolved and distinctly uninfected. MW
The Help Dir: Tate Taylor; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard The Help follows aspiring author Skeeter (Stone) who develops an unusual friendship with her friend’s black maid. Set in the 60s Mississippi, the film has a political backdrop, but despite pulling on the heartstrings, The Help is entertaining and enjoyable. The trailer promised more comedy than was delivered though and in this sense is not a true reflection of the novel. ED
G19
Jane Eyre Dir: Cary Joji Fukunaga; UK/US romance, 120 mins; Mia Wasikowska, Michael Fassbender, Jamie Bell, Judi Dench If you’re familiar with the story of the book, the film is disappointing. It seems like the skeleton of the story without some of the harsher details. The social criticism on the hypocrisy of Victorianism is removed, and because of this the film not only lacks meaning, but also really drags. ED
Tower Heist Dir: Brett Ratner; US comedy, 2011, 99 mins; Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Eddie Murphy, Alan Alda, Gabourey Sidibe After seeing Tower Heist, you can once again safely say that Eddie Murphy is one funny son-of-apunk-ass-bitch. Unfortunately, the script and the actual heist cannot keep up with the excellent groundwork laid by the actors and their characters. KE
Midnight in Paris (3) Dir: Woody Allen; UK/ France com, 2011, 94 mins; Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams Premiered August 11 Despite the promising trailer, a sinking disappointment accompanies the realisation that this is going to be one of Woody’s daffier works. MW

Red Riding Hood: In the Year of the Lord 1974

DAVID PEACE likes to rub people up the wrong way, and it’s no wonder given his preference for writing fictional accounts of factual events. His football book, The Damned United, is to the family of Brian Clough what The Satanic Verses is to the Islamic world. And don’t get caught in possession of his Red Riding Quartet by the Yorkshire Police Force - he alleges their hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper was more inept than the search for the Amager Attacker. Come on! Even Clouseau could have caught him in a week. For this acclaimed BBC miniseries, Peace’s quartet has been reformed into a trilogy with a mesmeric cast and gruelling narrative, the first of which Red Riding Hood: In the Year of Our Lord 1974 stars Andrew Garfield, an Os-
car nominee in The Social Network and so quietly brilliant in Boy A. It will “haunt you waking and sleeping, night and day,” promises the LA Times, one of a number of US publications that loved it. “If you survive the watching of it, that is, which is no easy thing.” Part two follows next week – don’t miss it as it keeps on getting better. Equally acclaimed (97 percent on RT) is the winner of the 2010 Oscar for best doc, Inside Job (SV1, Tue 22:00). Narrated by Matt Damon, it provides an analysis of the global financial crisis that summons, according to the New York Times, “the scourging moral force of a pulpit-shaking sermon”. Although the BBC’s provocative drama Freefall (BBC Ent, Sat 23:25), dealing with the same
subject matter, has an interesting premise (we’re all greedy scum), it delivers a vacuous punch that suggests it was written in a hurry. Elsewhere, Injustice (DR1, Tue 22:00) is a British miniseries with mixed reviews that follows a barrister disillusioned with the justice system; it’s the eighth season of Project Runway (TV3 Puls, Thu 20:00); there’s DR1, Sun 22:50 Red Riding Hood: In the Year of our Lord 1974 another chance to see acclaimed cop series Blue Bloods (TV2, SunThu 22:05); will Face Facts: The Truth About Botox (TV3 Puls, Tue 22:00) reveal that all our faces are going to fall off; and School of Comedy, (BBC Ent, Tue 23:15) is a rubbish sketch show performed by teenagers who think they’re hilarious but really should stick to their school production of Bugsy Malone.
