I WON’T BE going home to Britain for Christmas. While I have fond memories, I don’t miss it anymore. Besides, I was always hungover, sometimes even on Christmas Eve, which was a shame as it was one of the best pub nights of the year. For what seemed like a long time in my teens, all the Christmas Eves merged into one narrative, as if you were merely resuming a conversation you’d left off 365 days beforehand. Great times, but as they say in panto (see G2), it’s behind you and I started to shun the jolly, kissy catchup. I’d turn up at the local already sloshed, fail to recognise the people I spoke to last year, swear at a former teacher, lose something, stumble home and have a whisky-fuelled argument with a family member – one year it even ended violently with a brother. The evenings started to remind me how little my life had moved on. Christmas Day, the embodiment of everything that was sacred in my childhood, had become a lie-in, a hair of the dog drink, a meal, and a television marathon.
Now I have kids, all of that has changed, but it makes me wonder what it was about the British Christmas I used to love. Was it really all about the telly? Maybe I wasn’t getting out enough. My parents were too uppity to take me to anything that would demand interaction with ‘poor people’ (they didn’t actually say that, it was my aforementioned brother). Insulated from the perceived working classes (in 1984, during the miners’ strike, my friend’s mother paid me 50p an hour to shovel horse dung because it was the same wage as the strikers – and I believed her), I had to rely on other people’s parents to take me to my first football game, and also my first (and only) pantomime. The CTCs decision to start doing an annual panto is another reason for not going ‘home’. Denmark already has more traditions than most countries, and if it can borrow a few of the ones that don’t revolve around pickling your liver for Boxing Day, the more the merrier. But if you fancy a couple of festive drinks in a classic British boozer, you won’t find a better one than Charlie’s (see G9 for a long overdue review). While it can’t guarantee you any former teachers to swear at, it offers some of Britain’s best loved bitters, including my personal favourite, Harvey’s from Sussex, a stalwart of many a Christmas Eve past.

Cinderella
Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, 2100 Cph Ø; starts Thursday (Dec 15), ends Jan 7, performances at 19:00 (weekdays) & 16:00 (weekends) Dec 15-23, Jan 3–7; tickets: adults 150kr, children 120kr, via www.ctcircle.dk or 2812 3680, tickets@ctcircle.dk for group discounts; special cast meet-ups on Dec 17, Dec 18, and Jan 7 EVERY CHILD has seen a Disney movie – and every parent has been bored stiff, as animated characters prance past evil witches and towards a handsome prince. The kids are learning important information about good, evil, and how to recycle a plot line – the parents are just wishing it would stop. But this Christmas, there’s a little relief on the way. You might know how the fairy tale ends – but now, you and your kids can have fun together along the way. Copenhagen Theatre Circle, the city’s oldest English language theatre group, is bringing the British tradition of pantomime to Copenhagen with their original production of the children’s classic Cinderella. A rite of passage for all British children, pantomime is descended from the Italian masked comedy, comedia dell’arte. Its current form is a noisy, raucous, gender-bending part of the classic UK Christmas. The style takes familiar story lines and demands that the audience (and the actors) break theatrehouse rules. This usually means musical numbers, loud costumes, and plenty of drag. A ‘principle boy’ is played by a feminine young woman, while the ‘Dame’ is played by an older man in makeup. The lucky chorus plays the farm animals, usually a cow. High jinks ensue, and the audience is encouraged to yell, scream, boo, and cheer the villains and the heroes. If the lines “He’s behind you” and “Oh no, it isn’t” aren’t familiar, don’t worry, they will be by the time it’s finished. Expect this to yield plenty of entertainment. The cast has promised references to Harry Potter, the Danish parliament, and lots of interactive musical numbers. And rest assured that the many sexual entendres and innuendos – as vital to a good panto as drag and slapstick – fly over the heads of the younger audience. They might get the joke, but in a flashback ten years from now. “It’s great,” enthuses Simon NeubertLuckner, the vice-chairman of the CTC. “We’ve been considering doing a Christmas show for quite some time – something that appealed to both young and old. Betty Nansen Teatret, Frederiksberg Alle 57, Frederiksberg; ends Jan 15, performances Sat 17:00, Mon, Tue & Thu 20:00; tickets: 150– 360kr; www.bettynansen.dk The team behind the theatre gigs Gasolin’, Come Together and Bob Dylan are back. They’ve been given the ultimate challenge – to create a theatre show based on Mozart’s music. With a sense of timing and dizzying costumes, the unreasonable Cederholm & Co takes you on a journey through Mozart’s world of famous compositions, as you’ve never seen or heard them before. Rediscover Mozart’s big hits in a new guise with some fantastic singers and actors. EM

seemed the obvious choice.” The story of Cinderella is a classic. The pretty young hero is forced to cook and clean while her gaudy, man-hungry stepsisters scheme and bicker. On the night of the local prince’s ball, she’s forced to stay home and keep house. But with the help of a token fairy godmother, who does some very imaginative things with a pumpkin, she has the chance to get decked-out and snag her man. Barry McKenna - a winner of the Reumert Award, Denmark’s foremost prize for the performing arts - is the writer and director. Not content to let Cinderella’s path to romance be paved with dull jokes, he’s given the plot a welcome update, with lots of juicy parts.

The Nutcracker
“I was hoping to audition for one of the Ugly Sisters,” muses CTC chairman Frank Theakston. “But those roles were given to younger men.” Instead, he will play Baron Hardup, Cinerella’s father, who is inadvertently married to the wicked witch Carabosse. “It’s been a burning ambition of mine since I joined the CTC in 1979 for us to do a Christmas pantomime, and now we’re finally there,” Theakston said. “It’s hopefully the beginning of a long annual tradition in Copenhagen.” Pantomime theatre has been exported across Europe, Asia, Africa and India, largely by British expats. Now, the fun has arrived in Denmark. KATHERINE DUNN W

This is opera charged with a passion that comes through both musically and dramatically.” So says Kasper Holten, the artistic director at the Copenhagen Opera House, about the bilateral production of Cavalleria Rusticana & Pagliacci, Pietro Mascagni and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s widely admired (but separate and independent) operas from 1890 and 1892 respectively. The pairing of the two (colloquially referred to by aficionados as the ‘Cav and Pag’ doublebill) was first tried in 1893 and has become a favourite with audiences ever since. tune their interpretations so that narrative is unconnected while themes ‘resonate’ across the intermission. Like hemispheres, the halves significantly complement each other without actually overlapping. As already hinted there is little opera buffa in Cav and Pag’s ferocious starkness. However, those who like to snicker and chortle may find compensation in two other aspects of these long neglected titles. The first is of such a magnitude that it could potentially fill the seats of any opera house in the world: namely the Argentinian tenor José Cura whose legendary vocal work will grace the first four performances. (He’ll pass the torch to the American tenor Roy Cornelius Smith whose fame is also considerable.) Intimately acquainted with the material from recording it on DVD, Cura (and after him, Smith) will perform under the conductor Stefano Ranzani. Like Cura’s arias, ticket prices have been permitted to soar on those four nights – the world’s leading interpreter of Verdi, as one critic puts it, knows what he is worth. And the second is the work of set designer Mia Stensgaard whom critics tend to praise with similar unanimity. Her signature will augment both Cav and Pag and enhance the aesthetic coherence of the evening. Her role is
clearly not to be underestimated – and nor is her artistic punch, as Tannhäuser at the Opera demonstrated in 2009. Occasionally paying subtle tribute to a legendary visual artist in her work, Stensgaard also appears to be the kind of artist whose ideas suffer very little obstruction between conception and expression. Working closely with her is costume designer Anja Vang Kragh; up until 2005 her skills were used in the fashion houses of Stella McCartney, Christian Dior and John Galliano. But as such inducements are after all external to the essential work, let me mention a few choice elements. One is Cavalleria’s much-loved, climactic Easter Hymn – ‘Innegiamo, il Signor non è morto’ – which has compelled some to say that, by and large, even Carmen (a possible model for much of Cavalleria) is outdone by the opera’s powerful tragedy. And then there’s the ‘Vesti la giubba’ aria of Pagliacci, one of the world’s most famous tenor arias, which beautifully exemplifies Leoncavallo’s harmonically expressive vitality and sense of drama. What’s there not to like? This double dose of pure Sicilian passion and vivid drama might be the best relief from all our December chills.

risy, drinking and to-the-death duelling (Cavalleria) dovetail nicely with those of uncontrollable passion, violence, poisoning, and murder (Pagliacci). Strictly speaking, though, Holten only directs Cavalleria, an iconic, swift-moving oneact affair and one of the world’s classic verismo operas (a nonRomantic style distinguished by realistic, sometimes sordid and violent, depictions of everyday life). As Mascagni’s best known opera, its track record is impressive: up until Mascagni’s death in 1945 the work was produced a staggering 14,000 times in Italy alone. The Royal Danish Theatre caught on in 1927 – but left off in 1986. The national stage had been pushing 410 performances, and now it’s time to dust off the old classic and see how it fares in this millennium. The director of the Pagliacci half is the Scottish-born Paul Curran, the artistic director of the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet. Curran, who was a professional ballet dancer until a hip injury sent him to Sydney’s National Institute of Dramatic Art, has directed over 20 operas in the past ten years. Including Tosca and La Bohème - both of which Pagliacci is said to resemble musically and dramatically. As collaborating directors for this double-treat, Holten and Curran have decided to fine-

Named after a poet, they’re showmen and they know it
The William Blakes
Bremen, Nyropsgade 39-41, Cph V Saturday 20:00; 170kr www.billetlugen.dk www.myspace.com/thewilliamblakes
I
T’S BEEN another year for Danish four piece The William Blakes, and world-wide fame and recognition continues to elude them. While this is no doubt frustrating for the band, it does give us the opportunity to see one of rock’s most underrated bands at relatively small venues. As they roll through Copenhagen again, it’s worth catching them, for there’s no telling when that big break may come. Naming their first album Wayne Coyne after the singer of The Flaming Lips, The William Blakes don’t seem to mind shouting their influences out to all that will listen. This is refreshing in itself. The William Blakes borrow heavily from a number of pop acts, The Flaming Lips among them, but they use these influences in the best possible way, blending what’s popular at the moment and fusing them into their own songs. They ride the ‘80s revival wave with a mixture of passion and humour, making for a wellrounded sound that’s still in the process of evolving. Releasing their first record in 2008, this four piece enjoys a solid fan base in Denmark and Sweden, although little is known of them outside Scandinavia. Their album Dear Known Friend was released last year and earned the band sol-
id reviews, with their European shows attracting wider attention. Their live performances often feature additional musicians on stage, and it’s not uncommon for the band to swell to as many as eight, creating a solid sound that does well to keep the audience entertained. Most impressive is their use of two live drummers, who square off and face each other, creating a syncopated backbone that drives the music forwards. The band combines pop and rock nicely into a form of music that is easily pleasing. The rhythms are solid and dance-inspired, and a combination of guitars and keyboards colour the melody section, creating a platform for the singer, Kristian Leth, to do his thing. Leth combines the best of what we’ve come to expect from traditional rock stars, and he has a modern flare reminiscent of The Arcade Fire. He is exciting to watch, fronting the band with a perfect mixture of cool and aloofness. The band have formed their own record label, ‘Speed of Sound’, giving them infinitely more freedom to record the albums they want to. As well as enabling more creative direction, their record label allows them to release as many albums as they want, bypassing record labels’ often strict release schedules. Speed of Sound has also begun to support other local artists, becoming a much needed outlet for up-and-coming bands. There’s little doubting it, the band are entertaining. They create a raw energy when playing live, and it’s clear they enjoy themselves. With a diverse range of influences, it’s hard to pin them down, and their songs vary in both depth and scope. The William Blakes are above all a band that exudes positivity, and it’s this fresh approach that will continue to see their popularity grow. ANDY RUGG

ardcore punk might be the only sub-genre of music where half of the bill will disband after a show. It almost sounds like a joke, but that’s exactly what happened on december 3 when Scandinavian hardcore stalwarts Hjertestop and Skitkids decided to play one last show at Ungdomshuset before calling it quits. The demise of Hjertestop and Skitkids was particularly poignant for the latter, as this was the 10-year anniversary of a band that had earned its stripes in europe’s dingiest clubs. The well-trodden ways of both bands meant europe’s most passionate hardcore punks, crust kids, and squatters all descended upon Ungdomshuset, ready to mosh one final time to their hardcore heroes. The second Hjertestop started their short-but-sweet set, a jolt went through the

Real Estate Lille Vega; 21:00; 140kr The four-bit indie-rock group hark back to old-style americana – with a hint of the hollow sounds of the ‘50s in their tinny chord sequences colliding with the group’s evident infatuation with surfer rock. Hjertestop brought a live performance that fed as much off the crowd as the crowd fed off the band. Soon, even a fan on crutches couldn’t resist risking life and (another) limb as he entered the fray. and when Hjertestop’s bassist broke out the dIY pyrotechnics in the form of a lighter against his lips as they sprayed alcohol into the air, it finally seemed to sink in that this was really going to be it for the danish band that had graced Ungdomshuset so many times. With the (bittersweet) benefit of playing their final show and being the final act of the night, Malmö’s Skitkids received an audience with no reason to save energy for later and no reservations when it came to stage diving into a crowd that may or may not catch you. and while the crowd was wild, the actual stage was even wilder. In the middle of an all-out crust attack from Skitkids, someone wearing a monkey mask ran out onto the stage and held a lighter to a spray can and sprayed fire over the heads of the audience – until someone in a pig

AS THE DANISH saying goes: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.” Whereas a few years ago a glance out of the window at a cold, wet, winter’s day would have had me running for the jigsaw puzzles and Disney DVDs, now it has me reaching for the ‘flyverdragt’ and bike helmets. The key to staving off the winter blues is to keep the body and mind active and get outside as much as possible. Let’s face it, with kids in the house, staying home with your feet up isn’t really an option. With the start of the school holidays coming up, it’s a great time to get out and explore the creative side of Copenhagen. With all the Christmas lights, markets, ice skating and theatre going on, there are plenty of activities to keep all those little senses stimulated. (You can find theatre listings for children on bornibyen.dk.) There are some days, however, when the weather gets the better of everyone, and these are perfect opportunities to get creative at home. There has been an explosion in blogs and websites giving parents creative inspiration over the past few years - playathomemom3. blogspot.com is particularly good for pre school children. Pinterest.com is a great resource of ideas for projects for all ages. You can also get inspiration during December for activities for the kids in Copenhagen on newcitymums. blogspot.com. Urban Outfitters Ostergade 42b, Cph K; open Mon-Thu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:0017:00; www.urbanoutfitters.co.uk From coffee table books, to arty, travel and dirty ones, these little gems make fantastic gifts, and because the variety is so wide, you’ll find something for every man. Book prices begin at around 50kr so it’s a fantastic place to pick up that small gift for the nephew or the cousin you rarely see but feel obliged to buy for. Abercrombie & Fitch Købmagergade 11, Cph K; open: MonThu 10:00-18:00, Fri 10:00-19:00, Sat 10:00-16:00; Price range for cologne: 30ml: 400kr, 200ml: 900kr; www. eu.abercrombie.com When your man’s ‘Old Spice’ really isn’t cutting the mustard anymore, take a whiff of one of Abercrombie’s eight different scents: four classics and four recently released sporty ones. ‘Fierce’ is the most popular and is actually unisex, so it has an understated fruity touch. If you like your man smelling a little more like a man though, try the ‘Woods’ - it’s musky and clean. ‘Colen’ is also nice, but smells a little like baked goods. Don’t be afraid to ask for a little customer service either - the shop assistants/male models will enhance your shopping experience tenfold.
Kids When you wish upon a star Anemone Theatre, Suhmsgade 4, Cph K; ends Dec 23, performances Fri 11:00 & 17:00, Sat & Sun 13:00 & 15:00, Tue 09:30 & 11.00, Wed 11:00 & 14:15; tickets: 35–120kr; www. anemoneteatret.dk The poetic Christmas story When you wish upon a star tells the story of a grumpy, miserable homeowner, Madsen, a pregnant young women, Sophie, and a lonely writer, Jensen - all of whom try their luck by wishing on a star. The magic begins with a backyard treasure, and an elf who with some angelic help proves that miracles really do happen when you wish upon a star. Age group: 4-12 years. EM Festive fun at Tivoli Vesterbrogade 3, 1630 Cph V; until 30 Dec; www.tivoli.dk This year Tivoli has created an amazing Russian theme, recreating a 2,000 sqm Russian city, complete with a version of St Basil’s Cathedral. Children can go on a Babushka doll treasure hunt to win a prize or visit Father Christmas and Rudolf the Reindeer. The programme of events includes the Tivoli illuminations, Christmas parades, The Nutcracker, the DR Ramasjang Christmas concert, and the Skt. Lucia parade. SA
IF ANY OF YOU have read Harry Potter you’ll probably be familiar with Harry’s local: The Three Broomsticks. It’s warm, crowded, welcoming and a little rowdy. With the exception of serving Butterbeer and Firewhisky, The Three Broomsticks has a lot in common with a little place in the city centre I like to call Charlie’s. Tucked away in a small hollow on Pilestræde sits this wee gem of a place - and I mean wee. It’s only 65 sqm and licensed to fit 60 people. Beer mats, some from 30 years ago, line the roof, while black and white pictures of old breweries and framed ‘ode to beer’ poems plaster the wall, giving this place a class of its own. It’s fair to say that Charlie’s really is in a class of its own. It’s one of only two places outside the UK to be awarded the Cask Marque – the equivalent of a Michelin star for beer. It’s no wonder then that Dave O’Neill from the ‘Campaign for Real Ale’ association writes: “It’s only a slight exaggeration to say that Charlie’s Bar has done for drinkers in Copenhagen what Noma has done for foodies.” British owner Iain Russell began Charlie’s 12 years ago as an alternative to the Carlsberg monopoly that gripped the country. “I wanted to tap into a vein that wasn’t catered for - to serve good quality beer where the focus was on the customer and not how much money could be made,” says Russell. Russell and his team personally source all the ales themselves from microbreweries across the UK - the focus being on independent breweries with heart and soul. With six hand pumps, continental beers and the odd cider, there’s something
Cut your own Christmas tree Rosendal, Rosendalsgade 5, 3140 Ålsgårde; ends 23 Dec; www.rosendal-gaard.dk; www.veterantoget.dk Pick and cut your own Christmas tree. There is a farm where the kids are welcome to pet the animals and if the weather permits, pony rides. Get there by steam train on the Nordsjællands Veterantog there are even special carriages for transporting your tree back home. SA Christmas Crafts at the Zoo Roskildevej 32, 2000 Frederiksberg; Sundays, 11 Dec & 18 Dec; www.zoo.dk This year Father Christmas has moved his workshop to the Old Elephant House at Copenhagen Zoo. There he invites you to get creative and make beeswax candles and Christmas cards using a variety of materials including elephant dung! SA Creepy Crawly Experimentarium, Tuborg Havnevej 7, Hellerup; ends Sep 2012, open daily 09:30-17:00; under-threes free adm, under-12s 100kr, over-12s 160kr; www.experimentarium.dk Learn more about the creepy crawlies that share your living space. From flies and ants to spiders and maggots, learn the unexpected places where insects live and don’t leave without your Creeponaut certificate. EM
The marvellous Harvey’s of Lewes rarely leaves Sussex, but they have it often at Charlie’s
for every discerning and non discerning local. All the pumps are imported from Britain - an extraordinary feat considering some breweries refuse to serve their ales 100km away in their own country. Theakstons Lightfoot Bitter was a brilliant example of a great ale. Light and crisp, this straw-coloured ale uses a special malt to produce a ‘peach-like’ element. And its low alcohol content made for extended sipping. Another favourite was the port stout matured in port casks - which showed off its rich flavours while flaunting an extremely creamy head. Adding to our list was Fuller’s Golden Pride, which was very rich in malt, and Tribute Extra, which is matured in bourbon cases that give it a very distinctive flavour. We thought it only proper to try some of the more continental beers on offer too. Denmark’s very own Hancock Julebryg was a big favourite. Mild and well rounded, it boasts a 10.5 percent alcohol content so it’s one to respect. And while the Weissbier on offer is another notable option, I would opt for a cider, the Old Rosy. It will put hairs on your chest.
The freshness of the brews is one of Charlie’s key ingredients that ensures it stands out from other pubs. After importation, Charlie’s give their ales a second fermentation right here in Denmark, which according to bar manager Gerard Gilmartin creates “the best representation of what the ale should taste like”. Not just satisfied to serve some of the best ale in Denmark, Charlie’s also serves up some of the best service. The barmen are more like long lost friends, and certainly have their wits about them when it comes to beer. And with only six tables in the place you make friends easily. This is what makes Charlie’s so successful - that and great beer, friendly staff, quirky locals and that cosy home away from home feel. Russell acknowledges that their success has come from staying true to this grassroots pub culture. “Charlie’s, like any pub, is a living breathing organism; it’s a place for everyone regardless of age, class or social standing, where beer is the primary concern.” May I suggest making Charlie’s your new local? BY NICHOLE ACCETTOLA
OVER THE SUMMER, my husband and I decided to replace our 90-year old roof. We gave ourselves four weeks, but before the workmen could start, we had to make sure the attic was empty. Dark and dusty, it seems highly unlikely today that our children will one day think of the attic as the cool place to hang out with their teenage friends and listen to music. Neither my husband nor I fancied the idea of going up, and we’d hardly been up there since we moved in two years ago. Nevertheless, I took a trip up the rickety ladder to make sure there wasn’t anything other than isolation and cobwebs up there. To my surprise, the light from my flashlight was then met by not
one, but two sets of small beady eyes. And it wasn’t until a few seconds later I realised that I had just found the house’s very own elves. One female and one male, both about 20cm tall, they needed a good brushing off once they came down. My five-year old son started jumping and laughing, excited to get a closer look at what I’d discovered, while my one-year old son backed away slowly, for fear that the elves were alive. Once the workmen had redone our roof, the two elves were returned to their positions in our attic. But my oldest son only allowed them to go up there with one condition – that we make and serve rice pudding to them each Christmas from now on.

Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Copenhagen N; 3535 7535; fourcourse menu 450kr, sevencourse 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you will find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it is well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th. dk; 1,250kr per person 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; www.reinwalds. dk; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75215kr Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. Danish Rice Pudding: ‘Risengrød’ 250 ml short-grained white rice, grødris in Danish, or brown rice 1 tsp salt 120 ml milk, preferably low fat cinnamon sugar, to taste cold butter, to taste In a thick-bottomed saucepan, bring the rice and 2 dl of water to a boil for 1 minute. Add the salt and the milk and bring it to a simmer. Cover the pot when possible, but remember to stir often to avoid scorching the bottom of the pan. Turn the heat down to low. (A little trick I use to keep the milk from cooking over is to keep a long metal spoon or ladle in the pot at all times.) After about 40 minutes,

the grains should be soft and creamy. Add more milk if necessary. Serve hot in bowls and top with a sprinkle of cinnamon sugar and pearls of cold butter. An alternative and old-fashioned way to prepare the pudding is to proceed as described above, but once the milk has simmered for about 8 – 10 minutes, remove the pan from the stove, pack it in several layers of newspaper, then towels and then a down comforter, to hold in the heat. After about 1 ½ hours (!), the self-pacified pudding is ready to eat! The Danish tradition of making rice pudding for elves in the attic will be a new addition to our home this year. And hopefully, there’ll be some leftovers for the rest of us too!

If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. rewarded for, perhaps three times over, it’s the 300 gram piece of Omaha sliced beef known as ‘Surf n’ turf’. This true blue Australian classic has been refined to fit even the most discerning French diner. My dining partner testified that this steak was ‘among the best three pieces he’s tried in Copenhagen’. More than tender, without being undercooked, I’ve never experienced a steak where the flavours are so available they were literally pouncing onto the tongue. Cox says a forward-looking menu will always have its challenges, but he feels they’ve found the right equilibrium: “French

SUNDAY BRUNCH
WHEN AN AUSSIE meets a Frenchman it’s unlikely they’ll bond over their choices in food. The Frenchman may find the Australian’s palate a little too primitive, maybe conjuring up images of kangaroo steaks and damper. The Aussie on the other hand may find the Frenchman’s taste buds a little too pretentious, perhaps struggling to understand why it’s so important to add garlic to every single dish. But one unlikely duo have done the extraordinary, bringing primitive and pretentious food to a middle ground. At no other place will you find Australian and French cuisine blended in such a way that it just works. In other words it’s ‘Tight’. According to the Oxford Dictionary, the definitions of tight is “having everything together”. From the service, to the homely yet sophisticated cuisine, to the wine matches, this is one restaurant that knows how to do it. Tight is the result of a chance meeting between its Australian and French co-owners Joel Cox and Nicolas Lammin, who met at Reef and Beef where Lammin hired Cox as a waiter. One thing led to another and the once abandoned nightclub (literally) at Hyskenstræde 10 was turned into Copenhagen’s next big thing. It’s hard to imagine this place was once a trashed club. Surrounded by polished wooden floors, brick walls and big candles, diners feel more like they’re hanging in their friends’ trendy New York loft. Adding to the inviting feel is a collection of the owners’ travel photos adorning the walls. And much like a friend’s home, the food they serve is made with love, and lots of it! Diners can choose a two or three-course menu, or if they’re hungry for a bit of everything, the new five-course small portion menu is perfect. I myself had this one, and I’m thankful I did. The portion sizes were enough that you felt satisfied at the end, while the palate had one heck of a ride. Beginning in France, we started with the truffle soup, which was rich in flavour with a thick consistency that gave it a hearty feel. It was served with a fried malt bread (something I never would have thought to do with bread) that gave the soup a whole new angle. Seafood can be a challenging dish for any restaurant to nail. Tight certainly rocked it though. Marinated overnight in lemon and maple, the salmon they served was a fresh twist on what can at times be a runof-the-mill dish. Served on rugbrød, with dill cream and pink peppers, the balance of spicy, sour and tart was rather loin–stirring. But if there’s one dish Tight should be
cuisine elements are easy to fit into any well balanced menu, the Australian food is a little harder to fit, but we make the most of the meats.” Wine-wise, the best French drops are on offer as well as the classic red Australian wines. Each wine matching was extremely tight too. Cox says the wine makes a huge difference to people’s dining experience: “We want to give people something different, something they enjoy, so we don’t skimp on the wines.” They also don’t skimp on the customer service. As an Australian, a friendly and gen-
erous disposition usually comes with the territory, and Cox makes the most of his hospitable cultural background. From the moment you step in and are greeted with a big “G’day guys”, to the time you step out with an “au revoir”, it’s the enthusiastic and warm comments that top off an already great experience. Tight (according to Emily’s dictionary) is a restaurant with an inviting atmosphere serving innovative and downright great tasting food.

here are a million ways to verbally trash Garry Marshall’s (Pretty Woman) latest romcom. But it’s Christmas and I should be forgiving, not because it happens to be the central message of New Year’s Eve but because this is entertainment, after all – not life and death. Let me do it, then, as nicely and honestly as possible: New Year’s Eve is basically a winter version of Marshall’s 2010 film Valentine’s Day. That basically means that we have a dizzyingly huge cast of attractive actors who except for Robert De Niro and Hector Elizondo show no sign of ageing. The fluffy skits are slightly less frantic than in Valentine’s Day but still on the jumpy side. And true to form, not one person on screen – except for the extras – looks or acts like a real human being. Bathed in gorgeous lighting, everyone radiates American sprightliness and excellent health. Every hair-do is chic, every tooth is bleached. Somewhat in the style of the comparable but infinitely superior British film Love Actually, New Year’s Eve opens by painting a brief but serious view of the world as we know it. This calibrates our reference points before we suspend all disbelief and get misty-eyed. There’s a 9/11 reference early in Love Actually and there’s one here – the unfinished One World Trade Center appears during a collage of aerial shots of sunlit
Pfeiffer is decidedly unimpressed with Efron’s attempts to show her how he can dance ‘robot style’ and simultaneously text with his gloves on New York City. A faceless voice goes: “Some people swear there’s no beauty left in the world, no magic. Then how do you explain the entire world coming together on one night to celebrate the hope of a new year?” With that, the important themes have been artlessly indicated. We’re in for a homage to New York, new beginnings and the end of the year. We meet our 20 focal characters, give or take, with 12 hours to midnight on the 31st. If you can forgive the lack of a solid, original storyline, it’ll amuse you to follow them as they deal with

whatever obstacles keep them from meeting a loved one before midnight. I hope it will, as New Year’s Eve contains no funny allusions to intrigue you otherwise, no philosophical angles, no cliffhangers, no humour, and very little substance. I found it a tepid, shallow and predictable farce full of trivial problems. I suppose the magic happens when, whether logistic, mechanical or emotional, each of these problems is defeated by a lot of New Year spirit. The best of the episodes involves the retired photographer Stan (De Niro), a crushed man dying from can-

nant women less convincingly. I honestly can’t recall comedy as offensively mediocre as this. Marshall makes many mistakes in New Year’s Eve and for one his cast is too big. The recent star-sprinkled romcoms You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger and Crazy, Stupid Love both demonstrate how less may indeed be more. Another problem is the episodic plot structure that so easily sacrifices quality for quantity. But there’s an upside of that: if it’s feel-good fluff you’re after, here’s enough for a whole year.

cer in a New York hospital. His only wish is to see the Time Square Ball drop one last time. His sympathetic nurse (played decently by Berry) can’t allow it but punches out in time for Stan’s daughter (Swank) to enter the wing. The worst and truly toe-curling episode involves two pregnant couples vying for the $25,000 prize awarded to the hospital’s first parents in the New Year. Seth Meyers and Til Schweiger, playing the fathers-to-be, are acutely aware that their lines stink; Jessica Biel and Sarah Paulson couldn’t play preg-

HE GODS HAVE angered King Hyperion (Rourke) by allowing the death of his wife and children. Now he means to bait them from the heavens by wreaking havoc on Earth. In his path stands one man: Theseus (Cavill), a peasant
trained in combat, unknowingly by Zeus disguised as a mortal. After his mother’s murder by Hyperion’s own hand, Theseus vows to lead the remaining armies against the king and avenge her death. Thankfully, what Immortals lacks in original story content, it makes up for elsewhere. Undoubtedly this film will struggle to avoid association with Zack Snyder’s visually unique sword and sandals epic 300 (2006). The trailer proudly trumpets the two films’ shared producers and plays up their similarities: the aesthetic is not wholly dissimilar and the subject matter has the same classical conception of gods and men. However, on engaging with the
film itself, it becomes clear that director Tarsem Singh has crafted a subtlely different film with faults and successes all of its own making. Anyone who has seen his previous works - the flawed but visually sumptuous The Cell and the magnificent The Fall - will recognise that Immortals is related more closely to those films than 300. To set the films further apart, it can be fairly said that Immortals, whilst still an action romp and by no means more cerebral, is a less clumsy work that contains far fewer unintentional laughs, something which marred Snyder’s inarguably good looking 300. There is one strong similarity: Immortals’ performances are of an inconsistent
quality. While Stephen Dorff, Mickey Rourke and the obligatory wizened John Hurt provide solid support, some of the lesser known leads fall short by comparison. Despite great physical presence, Cavill (incidentally set to don the cape in Snyder’s Superman) occasionally wobbles under the weight of playing the lead, and Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire) puts in a particularly weak turn as the virgin Oracle. The critics’ view has also been very mixed, but in the words of The Birmingham Post, “Its physical power just blew me away.” If you’re looking for 3D spectacle, this is definitely the film for you. New this Week Revenge: A Love Story
Husets Biograf, Magstræde 14, Cph K; Playing: Thu-Sat 19:00, Sun 15:00; tickets 60kr; www.husetmagstraede.dk Revenge: A Love Story is a stunning new Hong Kong thriller shown on a 35mm print with English subtitles. A smart film, it plays with convention to such a degree as to keep the audience from checking out as the formula plays out. The plot focus is on a cruel man who slices up pregnant women - he’s methodical, cold and calculating. Also worth noting that Politiken gave this film 5 out of 6. EM

The Nightmare Before Christmas 3D (7)
Dir; Henry Selick; US aniimation, 1995, 76 mins; Danny elfman, chris sarandon Tim Burton’s classic returns to our screens with the promise that 3D makes it extra scary! VS
Book Your Tickets 50/50 Dir: Jonathan Levine; US dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard The ability to get laughs out of an illness so devastating is difficult, and getting them without being cheesy or forced is a true work of genius. 50/50 has a surprisingly good vibe and makes for an excellent night out at the movies. The movie follows Adam (Gordon-Levitt) - a 27-year-old that has just been diagnosed with cancer - as he copes not only with his disease but the reactions of those closest to him. KE
NEDS (15) Dir: Peter Mullan; UK/ France/Italy drama, 2010, 124 mins; Conor McCarron, Greg Forrest, Joe Szula, Gary Lewis, Peter Mullan NEDS (Non Educated Delinquents) traces the descent of a bright boy called John who has just moved to a 1970s Glaswegian neighbourhood. He is unjustly placed in a class below that to which he is academically suited on account of his elder brother’s reputation as a gang leader. Director Mullan quickly establishes this as a film about place - or rather being placed. While it evokes many classic films on account of the subject matter and setting, it does so with such a sense of urgency and a bloody ferocity that it ends up feeling quite unlike any of them. NEDS is not a film for everyone,
but if you’ve got the stomach, your soul will be greatly rewarded. MW
The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis From the opening credits to the very end, this film is a playful contradiction of old and new. Whilst the film very much stays true to the mythical and timeless world that Tintin author Hergé so masterfully created, the introduction of slick film techniques and 3D wizardry makes it a modern story for a modern audience. Directed by the infamous Steven Spielberg and produced by the super clever Sir Peter Jackson the film is action-packed, visually dazzling, and fantastically fun. JS
Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; US thriller, 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Make sure you’re in your seats early for this one or else you’ll miss one of the most brilliant opening scenes in a movie ... ever. Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE
Avoid like the Plague In Time (11) Dir: Andrew Niccol; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy Despite a skimpy plot the film’s storyline means no one looks older than 25, making for a very attractive cast. While the looks may be hot the action scenes are not – most are blatantly mundane at times. As one reviewer said “In Time fills its dynamic, sprawling universe with about as much character and drama as a half-hour game of Sim City.” EM
Paranormal Activity 3 Dir: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman; US horror, 2011, 84 mins, Katie Featherston Just like with Paranormal Activity 2, the film has skipped the press screenings and saved the premiere for the people who count – the airheads who’ll watch any sequel because it’s a safe bet.
Spy Kids 4D: All the Time in the World (7) Dir: Robert Rodriguez; US comedy, 2011; 89 mins; Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven and Joel McHale An endless series of obscure jokes sap the charm out of nearly every scene, resulting in a chintzy adventure that could have gone straight to DVD. EM
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I Dir: Bill Condon; US drama, 2011, 117 mins; Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner Pattinson gives his usual sultry, overly dramatic performance, except now he’s perfected the art of the sulking pout. Stewart, still just as annoying as the shy, awkward teenager might be carrying a half vampire baby, but all we get is one-dimensional Bella, just with a bigger belly. EM
Also Playing Contagion (15) Dir: Stephen Soderbergh; US thriller/drama 2011, 118mins; Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Jude Law Contagion is rather like the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand - in that there’s a long list of well known faces; the end is nigh; and some sort of uber-flu is to blame. The film also functions more like a bird’s eye view - rather than an intimate human account - leaving the audience uninvolved and distinctly uninfected. MW
Hysteria (7) Dir: Tanya Wexler; UK romcom, 95 mins; Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett The film takes place in the 1880s when hysteria was considered a disease affecting
G19
women. At the end of the 19th century Mortimer Granville developed the best treatment to date: the modern-day vibrator. It was daring to create a film like this as a romantic comedy but that causes the film to fall short in that it squeezes what was a fascinating true story into the standard format of the genre. ED
The Help (7) Dir: Tate Taylor; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard Set in the 60s Mississippi, the film has a political backdrop, but despite pulling on the heartstrings, The Help is entertaining and enjoyable. The trailer promised more comedy than was delivered though and in this sense is not a true reflection of the novel. ED because of this the film not only lacks meaning, but also really drags. ED
Tower Heist (7) Dir: Brett Ratner; US comedy, 2011, 99 mins; Ben Stiller, Matthew Broderick, Eddie Murphy, Alan Alda, Gabourey Sidibe After seeing Tower Heist, you can once again safely say that Eddie Murphy is one funny son-of-apunk-ass-bitch. Unfortunately, the script and the actual heist cannot keep up with the excellent groundwork laid by the actors and their characters. KE

Edward VIII: the Nazi king
spor t THE W OF EEK
DR2, Fri 21:20
HISTORY can be misleading. Sure, the subject of Edward VIII: the Nazi King (DR2, Fri 21:20) may have been a fascist, but he didn’t look like he was separated at birth from John Merrick like the bloke in this docudrama. He didn’t sire more bastards than any royal in history – half of Australia is descended from his loins – because of his HRH status alone. The man may have been a Nazi, but he wasn’t nasty looking. Made by Channel Five, the broadcaster behind such gems as Was Hitler Gay?, this glosses over all the norms of the day – namely that the only British aristo who wasn’t a Nazi sympathiser was Goody Two Shoes, soon to be the Queen Mum. Still, the 2009 doc is worth watching as it makes use of some FBI files released under the US Freedom of
Information Act that confirm Edward passed on secret information that made Hitler change his France invasion plans, advised that “continued heavy bombing would make England ready for peace”, tried to advise Roosevelt not to join the war, and was being lined up to retake the throne should Britain fall. Meanwhile, Churchill, concerned that British-based German POWs would inflate an invasion force, decided to ship 40,000 of them off to Canada where they saw out the conflict at 26 camps. The docudrama Hitler’s Canadians (DR2, Thu 18:05) recounts their adventures – before America joined in late 1941 they had a realistic chance of freedom. Some compared the Canadian camps to hotels, and 6,000 of them liked it so much they
ended up emigrating there.
