BEN HAMILTON

IT’S A QUIET WEEK out there – not a lot going on at all. Nobody’s planned anything because normally it’s freezing. Thank god for English football. A winter break might make perfect sense, but what would the world do without it – watch darts? Everybody’s detoxing – a fat load of good some doctor said in Britain, but isn’t that always the case over there. Health-scare stories have replaced celebrity scoops as the new way to peddle newspapers full of hate that vindicate their readers for hating everyone else only marginally less than they hate themselves. It’s not a good time to have a birthday. While there are very few valid excuses for not turning up to a party in the first ten days of January, everyone will find one. Flu is the most popular option – isn’t it remarkable how some people get it 15 times more than others? Why can’t they be honest: “I’m not coming because I can’t fake it anymore. I hate my life, as I do every year in early January, and I just want to sit at home in the warmth. Please

don’t invite me to any more of your birthdays unless you decide to move it. Besides, you’re 43 – aren’t you too old for birthdays?” To any Capricorns reading this, please don’t be too literal in your interpretation (you’re morose enough already), although the suicide rate suggests you won’t – more people top themselves in spring than winter, apparently because they’re too knackered to carry it out because of the perpetual darkness. What you need is a distraction, and there’s nothing more so than a children’s birthday party (see G8 for an incredibly informative Kids Corner packed with handy advice about how to organise one). Personally, I like making a special effort with the cake (see the Guide cover and G8 for the Cirkeline and Robin Hood castle ones I made for my four-yearold last month – yeah, yeah, a woman helped me decorate), but do get a little miffed that I have to make cakes for two parties – one for her friends, and one for the family. It’s a birthday, not a birthweek! I guess what drives me on is how much better my cakes are than the layer crap the vast majority of this country splodges out from supermarket packets like one giant cowpat with sickly icing on top. Sorry, but something’s got to keep me happy during the long winter evenings.

GL Strand, Gammel Strand 48, Cph K; starts Dec 10, ends Jan 22; open Tue-Sun 11:00-17:00, Wed-Thu 11:00-20:00; www. glstrand.dk AN ONGOING exhibition at Gammel Strand, one of the older contemporary art centres in Copenhagen, groups together emerging local and international talents in the arts. The eclectic Extract exhibition is to become an annual event for Gammel Strand, founded by the Danish painter CW Eckersberg in 1825. Extract actually reflects Eckersberg’s original intentions when founding the institution. He saw it as a place to generate debate around contemporary art and support young artists in their work and careers. The seven young artists here have the opportunity to win two prizes. They are eligible to win the jury prize of 50,000 kroner and an additional audience award that provides the winning artist with the opportunity for a solo exhibition at Gammel Strand. Meanwhile, the winner of the audience award, which has been determined by votes received up until December 31, will be announced on January 11. All of the Extract artists are recent graduates of art institutions in Denmark, Great Britain, or Germany. The majority of the seven focus on story-telling in their artwork, rather than tying themselves to a particular style or tradition of art making. The stories range in focus from the artistic to the political to the mechanically strange. Stefan Sulzer, a Swiss artist living in London, shows a film about a secret art collection in the Swiss Alps that contains artworks by artists Jenny Holzer and Daniel Buren and architect Rem Koolhas among others, which is only accessible in the summer months. Sulzer, wanting a challenge, accessed the mountain-top art treasure trove via helicopter to create his double video projection. One projection shows the sweeping view from the helicopter, and the other: the interior of the inaccessible museum. For Sulzer, the story behind the project is the role the natural world plays in dictating when the art collection can be seen. Hidden behind a muted colour palette, the rolled-up prayer rugs in German-Turkish artist Naneci Yurdagül’s piece, Untitled (Made in Israel), 2011, tells another kind of story. While studying and teaching in Israel, Yurdagül made contact with Palestinian art students living on the West Bank and asked them for their used prayer rugs. He

They’ve been given the ultimate challenge – to create a theatre show based on Mozart’s music. With a sense of timing and dizzying costumes, the unreasonable Cederholm & Co takes you on a journey through Mozart’s world of famous compositions, as you’ve never seen or heard them before. Rediscover Mozart’s big hits in a new guise with some fantastic singers and actors. EM

then provided them with new rugs. Yurdagül points out that though the students could not easily travel to Israel, the prayer rugs were able to move outside the conflicted political borders, ultimately travelling all the way to Denmark. His unassuming art piece belies this hidden complication. The piece by Danish artist Ea Borre on the other hand looks complicated but is quite simple. Borre, who graduated from the Jutland Art Academy in Aarhus, is interested in music and machines. Her mechanised sculpture continually pipes out strange sounds, as it moves jerkily in the gallery’s exhibition hall. Borre was inspired by the repetitive sounds made by music

Store Scene, Operaen, Ekvipagemestervej 10, 1438 Cph K; ends Feb 4, 20:00 (unless stated) on Sun (15:00), Tue, Thu; tickets 95-1,250kr; 180 mins incl intermission; Italian with Danish titles; www.kglteater.dk Enjoy two operas for the price of one: Pietro Mascagni and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s widely admired works from 1890 and 1892 respectively. The pairing of the two (colloquially referred to by aficionados as the ‘Cav and Pag’ double-bill) was first tried in 1893 and has become a favourite with audiences ever since. Somehow the themes of adultery, hypocrisy, drinking and to-the-death duelling (Cavalleria) dovetail nicely with those of uncontrollable passion, violence, poisoning, and murder (Pagliacci). KRG

boxes, as well as the structural rigour of her new career choice as an organ maker. The young artist is not studying the old craft of organ making simply to improve her sculptural work - she is actively considering a career change. For now, Borre will continue making her sculptures, displaying them in art institutions, as well as using them in musical performance. Extract as an annual event for emerging contemporary art promises to become a fixture in the Copenhagen art world. Other artists in the exhibition include Meri Sidsel Gustafsson, Mads Thomsen, Soheila Sokhanvari, and Sandra Havlicek.

classic Cinderella, which has been penned by the director Barry McKenna, a winner of the Reumert Award, Denmark’s foremost prize for the performing arts. Panto involves musical numbers, loud costumes, and plenty of drag. High jinks ensue, and the audience is encouraged to yell, scream, boo, and cheer the villains and the heroes. If the lines “He’s behind you” and “Oh no, it isn’t” aren’t familiar, don’t worry, they will be by the time it’s finished. McKenna’s given the plot a welcome update, with lots of juicy parts. And rest assured that the many sexual entendres and innuendos – as vital to a good panto as drag and slapstick – fly over the heads of the younger audience. This year when Bartof celebrates its 20th anniversary, it will also be celebrating nearly 20 years of hosting concerts and gigs. From acoustic to semi-acoustic bands, Bartof has hosted performances over the years by names such as The Seamus Cahill Band, Ash Plant, Pentangle and Cecilia Norby. The place also promotes and supports up-and-coming musicians and works in conjunction with music festivals in the region such as Winter Jazz and the Roskilde Festival by holding themed concerts and performances. Such is Bartof ’s passion for music that food is never served during a performance and entry is strictly ticket-only in order to attract the right kind of crowd. Tickets prices vary from 30-200kr depending on the performances. Tickets can be purchased at the door on the evening of the performance or by contacting the café beforehand. Besides music gigs, Bartof also holds a monthly quiz night (in Danish), hosted by none other than popular Danish guitarist Michael Denner. Yes, this lively bar situated on the prominent Nordre Fasanvej is a bar/café that promotes and hosts musical talents throughout the year, while offering delicious home-made food. In a city like Copenhagen, with a strong café/bar culture, it is only natural that one is spoilt for choice and yet left confused when it comes to choosing a bar - more so, when they mirror each other in settings, menu and service. But not every bar achieves a perfect combination. Moreover, once you’ve thrown in the element of live music, it is only a handful of bars that come to anyone’s mind and one of them is Bartof. Phantom Limbs

Bartof has a strong reputation for promoting and supporting up-and-coming acts

politics, and it attracts a lot of mixed interest groups - a crowd of around 90-100 people on average. It starts at 19:30, is four per team, lasts approximately 150 minutes, and costs 40kr per head to enter (call Denner on 3315 9319 to book a place or find a team). The next edition is on January 17 or 24.

One cannot talk about a bar without mentioning the drinks and in this regard, Bartof tops the ranks with its unique collection of bottled beers from microbreweries in Denmark, Belgium and Germany. Friis-Holm is a conscious promoter of small breweries and regularly changes the draught beers. The beers

from the breweries in Herslev and Birthe Skands (Bryggeriet Skands) are highly recommended. As a repeat customer at Bartof, I would say that I am drawn to its quirky and mismatching furniture that reflects the mix in customers in age, culture and music preferences. Located close

to the Copenhagen Business School, it is a local favourite of both Danish and international students, while its gigs attract another type of customer altogether. In short, it’s impossible to feel out of place at Bartof: it’s truly a bar of the people.

The illustrations depict the violence and tragedy of war in a realistic style. This politically-charged series was not made public until 1863, 35 years after Goya’s death. Niki and the Dove Lille Vega; Friday 21:00; 140kr; www.vega.dk

T

here is no Niki and there is no Dove. Like their swedish electropop counterparts The Knife, Niki and the Dove like to keep their personal details very private, so apart from their names and their music, it seems that we know very little about them but, in a musical world that sometimes feels like it’s being taken over by the sob stories of X-Factor contestants, a band who simply let their music do all the talking is a welcome relief. This electronic duo consists of vo-

calist Malin Dahlstrom and primary songwriter/keyboard player Gustav Karlof, and between the two of them, Niki and the Dove cover an eclectic range of sounds from retro electronica to modern pop, with dazzling arrangements in a classic pop framework reminiscent of the likes of Little Dragon and Bat for Lashes. 2011 was a big year for the group as they have released an eP and, more recently, a self-titled album, and many music critics expect big things from them this year – they have been shortlisted for the BBC’s ‘sound of 2012 Award’, one of the UK’s premier awards for emerging artists. What is interesting about Niki and the Dove is that they are capable of marrying concepts together that seem to oppose each other. Their music is, on

first listen, very pop-orientated, with catchy hook lines and often an upbeat tempo, but this is tempered with layers of complexity. Upon further listening, other more subtle aspects of the songs come to attention – the single ‘DJ ease My Mind’ features tribal-style percussion underneath the main electronic drum beat, which is reminiscent of Florence and the Machine’s debut album, and the instrumentation of every song seems to reflect a natural landscape – something it seems scandinavian artists have a special talent for. Malin’s lyrics are also very closely linked to the natural environment. song titles such as ‘The Fox’, ‘Mother Protect’ and ‘Winterheart’ all hint at a love of the beauty of nature that comes

from a genuine place in the singer’s heart, and the fact that the band use so many electronic and artificial instruments to display a love of natural things is a wonderful irony that makes perfect sense when you hear them perform. At the same time, these deeper, conceptual ideas are not essential to finding enjoyment in Niki and the Dove’s music. several songs are genuine dancefloor fillers in their own right, such as ‘Under the Bridges’ where Malin’s voice (“it takes me back/to the night we danced/ under the bridges”) emerges from a jerky synth interlude along with a beautifully simple drum beat. it’s a very simple chorus, but simplicity and brilliance so often go hand in hand when it comes to pop music.

While Niki and the Dove may never achieve chart-topping success, their slightly secretive personal nature seems to suggest they do not want to. But they could be a band who develop a large cult following over the coming months and years. They seem to be continually creative – preferring to retreat into the studio than to spend time doing interviews and promotion – and to true music lovers this can only be a good thing. so whether you are looking for a deep and moving musical experience, or simply a great beat and a hard floor on which to move your feet, Lille Vega can provide both on Friday night. Wild Wax combo Mojo; 22:00; 70kr; Until mid-January, it’s going to be slim pickings. This period often lends the opportunity to homegrown, local groups to make an impression. rockabilly act Wild Wax Combo are one such group. With song titles such as ‘Hot rod Doll’ and ‘rumble in the Jungle’, and slick-back hair and tweed blazers to match, the band really do transport you back to a time before even The Beatles. There’s a peculiarly large following of this kind of music in Denmark, and WWC’s gimmicky dancefloor movers appear to have the market sewn up for now. ( english/Danish) Dvdn

like Pocahontas. Decked out in wacky jackets for most of the show, Dione shone with her slower songs ‘something from nothing’, which was written about her time in australia, and ‘recipe’. she then turned up the jungle vibe and belted out ‘Before the Dinosaurs’ while one of her band members beat hard on a bongo drum. Dione proved that she can’t be put in a box. at times she would hark back to a country feel, sitting on a chair with her guitar playing the crowd-pleaser ‘america’. she improvised the lyrics, taking out the word america and replacing it with Vega: “if you can make it in Vega/ you can make it anywhere.” Five minutes later, Dione’s inner Parton turned into an inner annie Lenox with an 80s synthesiser accompanying ‘song for sophie’. The crowd quickly ran with the 80s vibe and began to shake their booties. Dione’s voice didn’t falter for the whole two hours; she gave a soulful and zesty performance and the crowd lapped up everything she had to offer. While they weren’t so keen on the upbeat songs, the slower ones

Women in their 20s made up most of the sold-out venue. The few men who were there mostly hung out down the back, no doubt hoping Dione would make a costume change that involved apples. instead, she looked more

NØRREBRO isn’t known for its wine bars, nor is it known for its vast choices of cuisine outside shawarma and kebab. But to combat this, two men are attempting to steer this suburb in a new direction. Sitting just off Elmegade lies Malbeck Vinoteria, a sophisticated yet unpretentious place owned by Hans Hanhr and Patrick Mouritzen. Malbeck is one of those bars where you don’t feel underdressed or have to act as if you know more about wine than you actually do. There’s no typical crowd either. A Monday night saw a couple on a date, two old buddies from school, two girls talking clothes with their gay best friend and an after-work crowd trying to wash away the worries of the day. Yes the owners are Danish but the wine bar is not. Malbeck Vinoteria is the child of the mothership Malbeck Wine Baron Istedgade that opened in 2006. The Nørrebro bar was a product of the owners’ growing ambition for a wine store combined with a bar. According to Hanhr and Mouritzen, their aim was to create “a place where locals can stop by and pick up a bottle, or drop into have a bite and enjoy a glass of great wine”. In keeping with the colliding cultures of Nørrebro, Malbeck brings a touch of South America to Denmark. Their focus is on Argentinian wine that is of “very high quality whilst still great value for money”, according to Hanhr. In order to give you the best representation of the wine, Malbeck has

spared no attention to detail. All the wine is served in glasses from the Austrian ‘Riedel’ brand (the uncrowned king of crystal) and stored at a temperate 16 degrees. And they always serve up a good 150ml in every glass. I would highly recommend the goulat red from the Mendoza province in Argentina made from 100 percent Malbec grapes. A great drop, this wine has a dark red colour and an aromatic nose of fresh raspberry and cherry. This is an easy drinking Malbec. The tannins are soft and smooth and there’s a nice acidity that keeps everything together a good ‘house wine’ to enjoy with any mid-week meal. I was most surprised though (and I’m not often surprised at bars) to be served a sherry with our tapas. It was cool, light and unexpectedly worked wonderfully with the small tapas treats. The tapas on the other hand involved beautifully thin slices of delicately flavoured prosciutto, melt in your mouth brie – our first take was that it was but-

ter- and a nice helping of rabbit pâté served with diced pears on top. The risotto here is worth a shot if you’re after an everyday dish with a kick. Including four different kinds of mushrooms, it’s served with parmesan crisps on top. It was neither too rich nor too filling, which is hard to achieve with risotto. The food menu changes every day so don’t go there expecting to get ‘your usual’. Malbeck has also recently opened for lunch, and for a cheeky 100 kroner you can enjoy two courses. We washed down our dessert with a glass of port wine. It was rich and fruity and filled the whole mouth. If I didn’t know better, it could have been mistaken for a strong dessert wine. An extremely enjoyable port, nevertheless. Enjoy a touch of South America in the heart of Nørrebro with Malbeck. It’s relaxed, unassuming and simply ‘grande’. EMILY MCLEAN

The restaurant lives up to its name with some pretty awesome retro backdrops - which is cool providing they don’t start serving Coq au Vin

tremendously well to create a unique flavour explosion I’d never before tasted. We also enjoyed a traditional veal dish that was served with pumpkin cream, fresh coriander and parmesan cheese. Accompanying this we enjoyed a full-bodied Pinot Nero Piccolo Re’ 2008 Cabanon. For those who prefer a slightly softer Pinot Noir, I’d suggest the 2007 Pinot Nero Delle Dolomiti Dalzocchio Biodinamisk. It is produced by a female sommelier that only produces 5,000-6,000 bottles a year. It was feminine and its strong ribbons of flavour effortlessly seduced my dining partner and I.

SUNDAY BRUNCH

RETROGUSTO is an Italian restaurant serving authentic fare with a tantalising twist. You won’t find the dishes on their menu at every Italian restaurant in town. Their menu is small but fresh with Chef Michel Angelo Coretti doing the shopping himself three times a week at the local grocer to ensure that all the produce is hand-picked. Their wine list is also small but comprehensive - with only Italian wines sourced from the very best boutique vintners making the cut. Serving mostly organic wines, the restaurant’s co-owner Gianluigi Castaldo has no desire to serve customers anything stock standard and mass produced - what he calls “Coca-Cola wines”. The inside of RetroGusto pays homage to the owners’ heritage. With high ceilings, European décor and soft Italian music playing in the background, this restaurant appears much larger than it actually is. Able to seat 48 comfortably, my dining companion commented that even if the place was full you still wouldn’t feel crowded. From start to finish the attention to detail is evident in everything this restaurant does - nothing more so than the food. To begin they serve four types of bread that are of course accompanied by a strong and addictively tasty homemade olive oil. Be sure to keep an eye out for the rosemary and potato focaccia that was so tasty I could have almost called it a night. Along with the bread, we tasted a bubbly glass of Pieropan that was light and dangerously easy to drink - the perfect aperitif. The first dish we sampled was a Salmon Terrine held together by herb butter and sambuca. Served cold, this dish was light and fresh, making it an ideal starter. Accompanying this dish we drank a glass of Garlider 2009 from Sudtirolo in the extreme north of Italy. Fermented from the veltliner grape, this white - like the majority of others available at RetroGusto - contains no sulphates or added yeast. Following on, we were served the lovely Codfish with fresh orange and deep-fried tomato confit, served on a bed of squashed spaghetti and garnished with fried basil. Luckily the chef appeared at this moment to explain that we weren’t imagining things and that served on the side was indeed a tiny plate of hazelnut ice cream. Chef Coretti explained, despite my initial scepticism, that it is intended to be mixed with the dish. Now whilst this wasn’t exactly an appealing idea to me at first, I must admit I am now a convert. The ice cream alone was superb and probably one of the best I’ve tasted in a very long time, and when combined with the codfish it actually worked

Also on the menu is an extremely appetising risotto with broccoli, fresh pesto, potatoes, red peppers and topped with deep fried onions. As an avid lover of risottos that are done well, this dish was to die for. It was beautifully moist and bursting with flavour – something that is often missing in poorlymade risottos. Before moving onto dessert we enjoyed a tantalisingly tasty pork cheek served with chestnuts, eggplant and a chocolate sauce. The combination of the succulent pork with the chocolate was divine and the chestnuts provided a deeply nutty flavour.

For dessert we enjoyed a traditional Tiramisu served with white chocolate sauce and caramelised passionfruit, which was adorned with tempered chocolate. With service that is authentic, friendly and experienced, RetroGusto is a restaurant that will not only please lovers of Italian food but also those wanting to try something a little different. The food is fresh and flavoursome and, with its exotic twists, far from dull.

Small town knob jockeys fail the grade as big screen idols MARK WALKER

The Inbetweeners Movie (15) Dir: Ben Palmer; UK com, 2011, 93 mins; Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas

Premiered January 6 Playing nationwide

T

he Inbetweeners was a popular British sitcom that ran from 2008-2010 and traced the relentless efforts of four sixth form boy-men to get themselves “knee deep in clunge”. The problem with The Inbetweeners Movie? It’s not really a movie. Hardly surprising since the creative team remains largely the same as the show, with director Ben Palmer making his feature film debut here. Early on he tries to sell this as a cinematic outing by means of one unbroken virtuoso shot, that moves throughout the boys’ suburban neighbourhood and ends up in Jay’s (Buckley) masturbatory cesspit of a bedroom. It’s impressive but difficult to pinpoint anything in what follows that sets this aside from its small screen origins. When Jay receives an inheritance from his recently deceased grandad he hatches the plan to take his three best mates to Malia, Crete on ‘Pussay Patrol’. Recent dumpee Simon (Thomas) is on the rebound from his ex, Carly, consequently thinking he can see her everywhere, Neil (Harrison) is loved up, and Will’s (Bird) travel itinerary is full of archeological dig sites. The boys soon impress themselves on four equally hapless girls and spend much of the film failing to woo them, then falling out with each other, before becoming friends again. Then Carly actually does show up ... The series would often resemble Sex & The City, albeit tailored to appeal to a younger, male-orientated demographic;

“Hey guys, don’t look now, but I think one of The Smurfs is following us.” both series have sex and friendship as their focus and concentrate on the dynamic between four friends. The Inbetweeners was more of a sitcom and less of a ‘dramedy’, but the two shows are close in format. The resemblance is most obvious when you compare the protagonists (Will McKenzie and Carrie Bradshaw) who provide the shows’ moral compass, often bookending episodes with a voiceover that distills current events into insightful, lyrical sound bites. The Inbetweeners’ transition to the big screen also employs a similar strategy

to Sex & The City 2 (and incidentally, the regrettable Kevin & Perry Go Large) by supplanting a familiar environment with a more exotic locale, thereby creating an instant ‘fish out of water’ scenario. As with many TV to film transitions the tendency can be to adopt a more benign approach to its previous incarnation so as not to alienate newcomers nor attract overly restrictive age certification. Being a film clearly aimed at pre-existing fans, The Inbetweeners Movie thankfully retains much of its signature crudity but it does lose something by attempting to give us more.

The four leads remain perfectly at home in their roles and fans will soon find themselves smiling at the familiarity of their shenanigans. While the writing plays well to each of their comedic strengths, it prompts far more smiles than it does outright laughs. The plot is rather uninspired and, as the running time proceeds, events become more and more predictable. The problem perhaps lies in the plot’s over reliance on coincidental happenings. Chance encounters are easier to swallow when the setting is a house party or even a school, but when applied to an entire

resort town, such chances are considerably slimmer. This stretching of credibility extends throughout the film (Will gets a knockout love interest, whose attraction to him is particularly difficult to fathom) and is perhaps the film’s greatest flaw, namely because the series was admirably built on embarrassing truths elevated to painful hilarity. As such, while the movie pales in comparison to the show’s better episodes, and the formula struggles to fill the longer format, it will no doubt succeed in satisfying fans of the show.

Great ... if you like the idea of boxing robots DANISH FILM INstITUTE / IN THE HEART OF COPENHAGEN

Real Steel (11) Dir: Shawn Levy; US action, 2011, 126 mins; Hugh Jackmam, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, Hope Davis, Andrew Mackie, Kevin Durand

Premieres January 6 Playing nationwide

In January and February, see most of Orson Welles’ masterpieces including ‘Citizen Kane’ (12.-22. Jan.) and ‘the third Man’. Also, hear lectures about ‘the unknown Welles’ on 20.-22. Jan. R

eal Steel is a simple story, told thousands of times before – think Stallone’s Over The Top as a well-known example of a father and son bonding over sports. In this case the film takes us ringside with rousing, seamless scenes

full of boxing robots that hits you square in the solar-plexus. It’s sometime in the near future and robot boxing is all the rage – it seems the fans preferred the mechanical beasts (controlled by humans) bashing each other rather than their human predecessors. Charlie Kenton (Jackman) is just such a former boxer now eeking out a meagre living boxing old robots wherever and whenever he can. When Charlie does a deal with the husband of the sister of his abandoned son’s mother (don’t ask), he and Max (Goyo) spend the summer building and boxing an undersized yet unique robot that just may (or may not) have a soul. And in the process they find each oth-

er … (cue the music …) Of course Real Steel has a fairly predictable plot. Of course it has an ending so ooey gooey cheesy that you are liable to choke on it. It is also blatantly manipulative and yet, despite all of this you don’t seem to mind. You find yourself caring not only about the human characters but the robot too - this is where I would usually insert a joke about one of the actors but (un)fortunately they were all pretty good in this thing. This is especially true of Jackman (one of my favourites since he became Wolverine) who’s energetic and magnetic performance manages to pull off being a full-on jackass and

yet still is likeable as a character. The script he is working with is mediocre at best, but his charismatic performance manages to bring the story to life. His son played by Goyo is also nicely portrayed as he doesn’t tend to stray too far into the ‘cute’ kid mode but manages to keep his character grounded. Real Steel was always going to be compared to the Transformers franchise, but luckily coming in the wake of the atrocious Transformers 3, Real Steel looks like the real deal when it comes to movie entertainment. Just watch out for that overhand right. KEVIN EVANCIO

New this Week The Room

Husets Biograf, Magstræde 14, Cph K; Playing: Fri 20:00, 22:00; tickets 60kr; www.husetmagstraede.dk The Room can boast being one of Denmark’s favourite cult films. This gloriously misguided romantic drama has played one night every month since 2003 to sell-out audiences. The plot goes that a happy-go-lucky banker sees his world fall apart when his friends begin to betray him one by one. Some have hailed it as the next Rocky Horror Picture Show, talking back to the screen and acting out scenes as the softcore, melodramatic train wreck of a film derails before their eyes. Reservations can be made by emailing jack.stevenson@mail. dk. EM

book Your Tickets 50/50 Dir: Jonathan Levine; US dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard The ability to get laughs out of an illness so devastating as cancer is difficult, and getting them without being cheesy or forced is a true work of genius. KE

The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis

Whilst the film very much stays true to the mythical and timeless world that Tintin author Hergé so masterfully created, the introduction of slick film techniques and 3D wizardry makes it a modern story for a modern audience. JS

Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; US thriller, 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Refn manages to build extraordinary tension before igniting brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE

money ball (3) Dir: Bennett Miller; US drama, 2011, 133 mins; Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Robin Wright, Chris Pratt, Steven Bishop and Phillip Seymour Hoffman Moneyball is a baseball movie first and a drama about the underdog second. It isn’t really a movie about what happens on the field, it’s about what happens behind it, around it and off it as Beane tries to make his vision a reality. With a ‘home run’ performance from Pitt, Moneyball is his potential award winner of 2011. KE

Avoid like the Plague Another Happy Day Dir: Sam Levinson; US drama, 2011, 119 mins; Ellen Barkin, Ezra Miller, Ellen Burstyn

Another Happy Day combines some of the stock elements of a family film with an honesty and viciousness that brings it up a notch, but only just. EM

in Time (11) Dir: Andrew Niccol; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy While the cast’s looks may be hot the action scenes are not – most are blatantly mundane at times. As one reviewer said “In Time fills its dynamic, sprawling universe with about as much character and drama as a halfhour game of Sim City.” EM

larry Crowne (3) Dir: Tom Hanks; US comedy, 2011, 98 mins; Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Sarah Mahoney Do not expect Forrest Gump or Pretty Woman. Congenial is the word for Larry Crowne, but it’s as flat as an ironing board. EM

New Year’s Eve (3) Dir: Garry Marshall A tepid, shallow and predictable farce full of trivial problems. If it’s feel-good fluff you’re after, here’s enough for a whole year. KG

The Twilight Saga: breaking Dawn - Part i Dir: Bill Condon; US drama, 2011, 117 mins; Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner Pattinson gives his usual sultry,

overly dramatic performance, except now he’s perfected the art of the sulking pout. Stewart, still just as annoying as the shy, awkward teenager might be carrying a half vampire baby, but all we get is one-dimensional Bella, just with a bigger belly. EM

Also Playing

You’ll get the thrills you pay for but there’s something inalienably Swedish about the franchise that is not developed gracefully here. Relying on the original screenplay, screenwriter Steven Zaillian has produced a passable script but no character dazzles. Although not destined to become a modern classic, this will no doubt excite many. KRG

Contagion (15)

Hysteria (7)

Dir: Stephen Soderbergh; US thriller/drama 2011, 118mins; Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Kate Winslet, Jude Law Contagion is rather like the miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand - in that there’s a long list of well known faces; the end is nigh; and some sort of uber-flu is to blame. The film also functions more like a bird’s eye view - rather than an intimate human account - leaving the audience uninvolved and distinctly uninfected. MW

Dir: Tanya Wexler; UK romcom, 95 mins; Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett The fascinating story of the invention of the modern-day vibrator is squeezed into the format of the romantic comedy, and as a result loses a lot and ultimately disappoints. ED

The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo Dir: David Fincher; US thriller, 2011, 158 mins; Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer Something about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo jars. Whether it’s the fact that all of Stockholm unaccountably speaks English, or that Fincher’s version has grown up in the shadow of its model – an excellent work – is hard to say. Mara gets close to jaw-dropping in her performance of Salander but is mostly closer to simply outrageous.

The Help (7) Dir: Tate Taylor; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard Set in the 60s Mississippi, the film has a political backdrop, but despite pulling on the heartstrings, The Help is entertaining and enjoyable. ED

kill list Director: Ben Wheatley; UK Thriller, 2011, 95 mins; Neil Maskell, Michael Smiley, Myanna Buring, Emma Fryer The film’s greatest weakness is that it appears to have dropped off the cinematic ugly tree and hit most branches during the fall. There’s grim violence

G19

aplenty, from which poor aesthetics provide no respite. Performances are the film’s saving grace, lending more charm and credibility to a script that deserves far less. MW

immortals Dir: Tarsem Singh; US action, 2011, 110 mins; Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, Freida Pinto, John Hurt The critics’ view has been very mixed, but in the words of The Birmingham Post, “Its physical power just blew me away.” MW

Sherlock Holms: Game of Shadows

A

Dir. Guy Ritchie. US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Set in 1891, Europe is in chaos as a rash of assassinations and bombings threaten to take France and Germany into war. Sherlock Holmes (Downey Jr) then dedicates himself to defeating the man behind it all - Professor James Moriarty. Director, Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. He also has an excellent ear for soundtrack and the sets of old world London and Paris are very good. There isn’t anything to really bring it all together though, but you’ll still have fun with this one. KE

Peep Show

spor t THE W OF EEK

BBC Entertainment, Mon 22:45

EVERY YEAR we wait with baited breath to see what international TV series the Scandinavian broadcasters will take a risk with. Who in 2012 will be the first to take the plunge with Game of Thrones, or will it become another Breaking Bad, the insanely popular US series that started in 2008 and still can’t find a taker. And don’t forget Peep Show, the multi-award winning British sitcom that debuted in 2003 … what’s that, it’s making its debut after nearly ten years?! It’s particularly strange given that DR2 never stop showing the inferior sketch show of its costars David Mitchell and Robert Webb but have consistently turned a blind eye to a programme beloved in the UK for being so unashamedly honest, crude and, perhaps above all, middle class. Funnily enough,

its ratings have never been that good (it’s a phenomenon on DVD though), and the first episode is probably the weakest of all seven series made so far, so please persevere. No danger of anyone switching off during House of Saddam, a riotous BBC/HBO miniseries about Iraq’s premier family and their downfall that also gets a long-overdue bow this week. Really, it’s not a million miles away from Dallas – a feeling that the Times observed was served well by “the late-1970s/early1980s tacky glam” – while the Independent likened it to “The Sopranos with Scud missiles”. Distance yourself from the reality it’s based on and it’s a fantastic black comedy. Elsewhere, if you like the screenwriting of Alan Bleasdale (The Monocled Mutineer, Boys from the Black-

stuff) don’t miss The Sinking of the Laconia (SV2, Sat 13:50), a 2010 wartime miniseries set in 1942 that is his first project since the 1990s; Case Histories (SV1, Thu 21:45) is a new crime series with Jason Isaacs that has divided the critics; Decade of Discovery (DR2, Fri 19:10) is a new nature series that will introduce you to species you didn’t know exist- BBC Entertainment, Mon 22:45 Peep Show ed and neither did anyone until the 2000s; Arthur and the People’s Supermarket (DR2, Sun 20:00) is an interesting new series about a regular Joe who takes on Tesco with some help from his bros; and finally, Dickens’ Secret Lover (DR2, Thu 17:55) wasn’t HC Anderson, but a saucy actress – which kind of makes him the type of Victorian hypocrite he spent his whole career condemning.
