MARGARET THATCHER (see G2 for details of a new performance dance piece charmingly dedicated to her) and American football (see G9 for our preview of the best places in town to watch Sunday’s Super Bowl) were pretty big in the 1980s where I come from. I refer to, of course, England, a country that entered the decade with new hope after the doldrums of the 1970s, fell in love with money - both yuppies and labourers alike - and the Fridge (remember him?), and then left it with a rather nasty taste in the mouth. I thought I’d seen the back of them – by 1993 we’d pretty much got them out of our system – so why oh why do they keep on coming back. Embarrassing fashion (see G8 for Going Underground’s guide to gatecrashing parties at Copenhagen Fashion Week): see any episode of Dallas – yup, it’s returning. ‘Beat me up now’ haircuts: the New Romantics probably had the worst – just give it time. Crap tinny background music as one lone

voice, Morrissey, wailed in the wilderness: can anyone tell me a ‘80s band that hasn’t reformed, with the possible exception of St Winifred’s School Choir? The problem is that people in their late 20s and early 30s nostalgically look at the decade through rose-tinted glasses, but one glance at its films tells you everything you need to know. Al Pacino made just five, James Caan seven, and everything Harvey Keitel made went straight to video. Instead we got Chevy Chase and Police Academy, and a best film Oscar nomination for Working Girl. Take a look at any top ten list from that decade and I guarantee most of the films will be from 1980-83. That’s because decades don’t just end, they linger around for years as the new one try to define themselves. Those fluorescent shirts in the early days of the Premier League – really they were a relic from the ‘80s. But was it all Maggie’s fault? In many ways the old girl gets a rum deal. There’s not many who’ve been so widely vilified while they’re still alive. She might have left her country materialistic and in the grip of Murdoch, but it was still probably better than the winter of discontent. Albeit it with a prevalence of tasteless vulgarity.

It was a stalking horse candidate that brought Maggie down in the end, although that probably wasn’t the point of this gorgeous horsey shot

Maggie is a twat - the talkshow

Lille Carl, Dansehallerne, Pasteurvej 1424, 1799 Cph V; starts Sun, ends Feb 12, performances at 20:00 Mon & Wed-Sat, 17:00 Sun; tickets 60-130kr; www.dansescenen.dk EVER BEEN really pissed off at somebody you don’t really know, like an infamous warmonger, a child snatcher or maybe a politician? We’ve all been there. You want to crawl into their heart and shake things up a bit, make them see things from your perspective - but what are you going to do? Well, if you’re part of the performance dance duo The Mob, there is one thing you can do: you can take all of your anger and frustration and turn it into a spiteful dance performance topped off with a Sunday roast dinner - that’ll teach ‘em! Inspired by their deep resentments towards Margaret Thatcher, the two performers, Emma-Cecilia Ajanki and Julia Giertz, have put together a show in which the infamous Iron Lady gets it. Cleverly combining humour, quirky technical features and - of cause – animosity, The Mob invites everybody to a week of extraordinary experiences. Calling someone a ‘twat’ in the title of your show, and especially a lady of Margaret

Performance Blam!

Republique, Østerfælled Torv 37, Cph Ø; ends Feb 11, performances Tue-Fri 20:00; Tickets 160–255kr; www.republique.dk Four of Denmark’s best physical performers have taken their cue from some of the world’s bestknown action films to bring you the stage performance Blam! Set in an office, the actors merge stunts, parkour, dance, acrobatics, mime and slapstick to re-enact clips from their favourite movie scenes amidst desks, toilets and wastepaper bins. According to creator Kristján Ingimarsson, it’s where “the natural laws of gravity don’t apply and people are capable of great things. Don’t try to understand Blam! Just go with the flow.” EM

Thatcher’s standing, does not exactly send signals of well-grounded criticism lurking on the horizon. But the two performers engage sceptics head-on with an apology. “We are really sorry about the title we were just so upset,” they explain, giving hope that the act is more than a juvenile delirium dressed in dance, but stems from a genuine frustration related to the historic realm of UK’s first female PM. The Mob depict their dislike of Thatcher through a weird voyage of retribution, combining classic methods of anger transfer with cutting edge anger projection technology. In the forms of a faun and a unicorn, the two performers hide deep inside Thatcher’s “empty heart”. From here they use “a twometre voodoo doll” to try and get the Iron Lady to feel something ... anything. Maggie Is A Twat - The Talk Show runs for a week and during that week the performances are supplemented by a variety of thematic side dishes, designed to give the guests a broader insight into both the supposed horror of the reign of the Iron Lady, and into the artistic intent of The Mob. These include beverages at the premiere (Feb 5), a small lecture (Feb 8) about ‘self-staging and Margaret

Thatcher (given by dramaturge Inge Agnete Tarpgaard), an artists’ talk involving the two resentful women (Feb 9), and on the final day of the show (Feb 12), they serve up a traditional British Sunday roast dinner! “Tradition has it that the British Sunday roast dates back to medieval times when the lord of the manor would treat his peasants to a meal on Sundays as a reward for their work during the week,” promises the press release. “During the poorer periods of the 20th century, the Sunday roast was a luxury and possibly the only time of the week the family would have meat. But a Sunday roast is also a time for family and friends - be it at the pub or at mum’s house. Therefore it’s a pleasure for Emma-Cecilia and Julia to serve a plate of cosiness and togetherness to celebrate a week of voodoo and Margaret Thatcher thrashing.” So sharpen your forks, ready your smile, unlock that little vault of contempt for former UK leaders, and head on over to Dansehallerne to embark upon the original feast of Maggie is a twat - the talk show.

Now, one year later, we’re lucky to welcome its return. It has an alluring dreamy quality that stems from exquisite music and a host of fantastic characters – mostly in a seductive mood. And, of course, everybody can relate to a vicious, ugly troll. KRG

Premiered in war-torn Vienna in 1919, it comprises a mammoth score of sustained inspiration from Strauss and a similarly breathtaking wealth of ideas and allusions from the unstoppable librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Hofmannsthal, whose brainchild this really is, was drawn to the psychological side of fairy stories and he eventually got Strauss in on the project. Often compared to Mozart’s The Magic Flute, The Woman without a Shadow is now widely considered Strauss’s magnum opus. The composer thought so himself, as did Hofmannsthal, but the Viennese opera-goers anno 1919 were sceptically

hours eyecandy” magnificently accompanying the “grand, late Romantic music”. Not to forget that in light of what it surely takes to make such a monumental work come to life, no director will want to turn the page before absolutely necessary. “When we’ve chosen to restage The Woman without a Shadow it’s because it’s such a tremendous feat to stage it, and we want as many to have the chance to see it as possible. Another reason is that we get an opportunity to present a number of exciting, new artists,” Holten says before name-checking the acclaimed conductor Michael Boder. A force to reckon with, as Holten knows from first-hand experience, Boder has recently impressed with Alban Berg’s Wozzeck and Lulu at the Royal Danish Theatre. Another star to highlight is Ann Petersen in the role of the Empress - in 2010 she grabbed a ‘Singer of the Year’ Reumert Award as Ariadne on Naxos. The Empress is the titular, shadowless character - her strange deficiency a sign of her being half-human/half-spirit. It also symbolises her lamented inability to bear children. The Emperor (Johnny van Hal) receives the news that his father-in-law, the lord of the spirits, will turn him into stone unless the Em-

press casts a shadow within three days. Another woman (Linda Watson), married to the poor dyer Barak (Johan Reuter and James Johnson), is fully human - she is also infertile but she accepts it. The Empress’s nurse offers this woman a life of luxury if she’ll relinquish her shadow to the Empress. The plan seems unproblem-

atic until an ethical problem arises when Barak realises his love for his wife and the Empress realises her own selfishness. There are plenty of other twists charged with philosophical symbolism, including one that involves Barak and his wife being swallowed up by the earth when in a murderous rage he raises his sword to kill her – illustrating

instant karma, apparently. Spookily – but memorably – the opera also features singing from a choir of unborn children. But in terms of straight opera, it’s the endlessly admired leitmotifs of the Emperor and Empress that will probably stay with you when you return to the colourless shadows of reality.

nonplussed and far from entertained upon first experiencing the bombastic three-act opera. If art is entertainment for intellectuals (as Woody Allen has said), it’s true you’d have to be impressively well-read to appreciate the references to The Arabian Nights, Swedish folk tales, Goethe’s oeuvre, and the fairy tales of Novalis and Chamisso. Some cocktail, right? But one mustn’t sit through it like a lecture; there is no great message (except that artists are rarely philosophical and pedagogical at the same time). Today, however, it looks as though both Strauss and Hofmannsthal were ahead of their time. The work has certainly aged beautifully; enthusiastic audiences have greeted it at every juncture. When Kasper Holten, the former artistic director of the Opera, first unveiled his daring interpretation in May 2011, it was clearly a production built for future reruns. The critics loved it and rewarded such accolades as “lively, spectacular, mellifluous”. Another described it as “sublimely successful operatic magic”. Involving a dyer in one of the central roles, the narrative lends itself willingly to visually aesthetic and literally colourful (read: paint-drenched) scenes. This guy is going to steal your girlfriend Gavin DeGraw

Store Vega Monday, 20:00; 370kr; www.vega.dk www.gavindegraw.com

I

f you have a girlfriend, you might as well just let this gig pass by. Gavin DeGraw, the American platinum-selling singer is coming back to Copenhagen, and according to USA Today, “Gavin DeGraw is going to steal your girlfriend.” There are multiple internet forums on which girls are discussing whether or not he has a girlfriend. The comment of the one and

only guy replying – “I read somewhere that he’s 100 percent gay, so he’s more likely to have a boyfriend” – wasn’t much appreciated, to say the least. DeGraw is the standard-bearer of current radio-friendly piano pop. DeGraw has enjoyed success since breaking through in 2003 with his debut album, Chariot, which sold over a million copies, earned platinum certification, and yielded three hit singles: ‘I Don’t Want To Be’, ‘Follow Through’, and the titletrack, ‘Chariot’. He followed that up with his self-titled second album. After his third album, Free, he decided to shake things up a bit. On DeGraw’s latest album Sweeter,

he experimented with new sounds and collaborated with a host of top-notch producers he had wanted to work with for a while, including OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé, Adele), Butch Walker (Weezer, Avril Lavigne), Eric Rosse (Sara Bareilles, Tori Amos), and Ron Aniello (Barenaked Ladies, Matt Nathanson). “The creation of every song began with an interview to select the right producer,” DeGraw says on his website. “It was like speed-dating. I’d play them the songs I was working on and ask which ones they liked the best, and then ask them to produce those they were most passionate about.”

“This is the first album I’ve made where I felt ready to explore the more sexual side of my nature in my music,” he said. “My albums didn’t capture that in the past, so I guess you could say Sweeter is the sexiest, funkiest thing I’ve done.” And quite frankly, Sweeter’s love songs are tinged with some cringeworthy bromides and sometimes rather painful ‘sexy talk’ (“Damn, damn, girl, you do it well, and I thought you were innocent”). According to the man himself, his songs aren’t just for girls. “I want both women and men to love it,” DeGraw said. “Because I feel this album satisfies in a masculine way

while still having a feminine touch.” DeGraw – whose last gig on Danish soil was in KB Hallen, which unfortunately burnt to the ground a few months ago – has promised to play some of his old hits as well at Vega to make sure that the audience gets the chance to sing along. As part of his two-month tour, performing 25 gigs, Vega will host DeGraw on February 5. The day before, he performs at Train in Aarhus.

Birds on the Wire – A Tribute to Leonard Cohen

Lille Vega; 20:00; 150kr Taking the name of one of Leonard Cohen’s singles, Bird on the Wire is the project of an eight-piece Danish band. Paying homage to the artist’s lyrical universe, what initially started out as the concept of an exclusive concert at the close of the millennium has resulted in critical acclaim, a number of soldout concerts and the reworking of over 40 of Cohen’s modern classics. With the number of tickets available falling dramatically, it’s advised that you book up post-haste to avoid missing out on one of the band’s few live concerts.

OK Star Orchestra

Global; 21:00; 70kr With a plethora of jazz concerts springing up at venues across the town as part of the winter edition of the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Global offers something off the beaten track with a global fusion orchestra hailing from Sweden. Creatively bombastic, the five-bit orchestra rein in influences from just about every corner of every continent (including west African stringed instruments, Delta blues and French folk music) to create wildly eclectic jazz compositions. Global consistently delivers concerts of a different ilk to those found at other venues across town, and tonight’s concert is worth a look if you’re in the area.

TUESDAY 7

LeFaro

Amager Bio; 21:00; 100kr The Belfast-bred four-piece offer a post-hardcore noise-rock sound and have been hailed as one of Northern Ireland’s best alternative rock groups of the last decade. Their hit single ‘Tuppenny Nudger’ was in fact proclaimed the best Northern Irish song of the past five years in an Alternative Ulster survey of 2008. Heavy distortion, pummelling drum-beats and frontman Jonny Black’s thuggish vocals guarantee this will be yet another wild concert (as part of their European tour) that Copenhagen’s rock crowd will chew up.

WEDNESDAY 8

J Dilla Foundation hosted by Phat Kat

Loppen; 21:00; 80kr J Dilla is a legend of hip-hop, perhaps best-known for working with A-list hip-hop stars such as Busta Rhymes, De La Soul, Common and Q-Tip. He passed away in 2006 after a long battle with a rare blood condition, and a charity was set up in his name to support inner-city music programmes and provide scholarships for young hopefuls On behalf of the charity, Detroit rapper Phat Kat – no stranger to the hip-hop scene himself, with a career that stems back to the mid-‘90s – will be performing a special concert with the help of special guests in a bid to support the foundation.

on’t try this at home’ – life advice taken straight from MTVs TV show Jackass. However, as much as you might be inclined to think in terms of Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, and Steve-O, none of these three legendary guys are the star of the show this week. Instead, it is one of our time’s most prominent spokesmen: Henry Rollins. Rollins, born Henry Lawrence Garfield, is perhaps best known for his cameo appearances on Jackass, and his role as host on a wide range of other important shows such as The Henry Rollins Show, and MTV’s 120 Minutes. Starting his career as a punk

rock musician, he first became famous in 1981 when he joined Black Flag as lead singer. Black Flag, a Californian rock band, was one of the first bands to incorporate heavy metal melodies and rhythms into their music. Consequently, their unique merger of rock and metal built the foundation for American West Coast punk rock as we know it. Rollins left Black Flag in the late ‘80s and decided to start his own band. Rollins’ Band became the name of his newfound family – one that kept loyal to his punk rock image, although it came with a twist, fusing funk, post-punk noise, and jazz experimentalism. Songs such as ‘Low Self Opinion’ and ‘Liar’ both earned heavy airplay on MTV in the early ‘90s. In 2004, Rollins managed to – yet again – reform his unique music image when he started hosting a live radio show on Indie 103.1. Rollins and his colleagues were among the few who championed indie-rock while it was still at its grassroots level.

The political provocateur doesn’t pull any punches

Today, however, he primarily performs his ‘Spoken Words’ shows – shows that depict him as the leading social and political provocateur of our contemporary society. With his unique humour, Rollins is not afraid to touch a variety of topics such as gay rights, dating, and rave music – everyone gets a piece of his mind, whether they like it or not. As much as his music would classify him as a man of renaissance, his role as contemporary

James Blunt

Store Vega; 20:00; 420kr The English singer-songwriter came to prominence in 2005 with his two blockbuster singles, ‘You’re Beautiful’ and ‘Goodbye My Lover’ – from his debut, Grammy award-winning album, Back to Bedlam. Blunt is still yet to hit the same notes with his more recent songs, though, oddly, he still remains a high-flyer on the international pop charts. His concert in the picturesque grounds of Rosenborg Castle last summer probably gained him a few more Danish fans. It’s expected that those and many others will be chasing down tickets for tonight’s show too, so be sure to book in advance. (English)

provocateur is as up to date as the latest news. Addressing some of our core social problems, Rollins has no fear of calling a cow a cow – if that is what he believes. Henry Rollins – Spoken Words is not a show for fragile souls; however, it is a show for people who are not afraid of saucy and uncensored comments. As Rollins likes to put it, once the curtains have started rolling: “My content is UNCUT!” Petra Xotta

Four Year Strong

Lille Vega 21:00; 125kr This American four-piece was born out of the generation of soft, teen-rock groups such as Sum 41, Blink 182 and Attack Attack!. Releasing four commercially successful punk-rock albums since 2001 – their latest being In Some Way, Shape or Form (2011) – their music has gradually turned heavier over the years with each successive record, digging deeper into the band’s ‘90s influences. Rust; Wed 23:00; 80kr If you’re on the prowl for a midweek party, you needn’t look any further. Hosting a batch of Denmark’s up-and-coming rappers and DJs as part of the weekly event, Why Not? presents the Brooklyn-born Grammy-nominated DJ Kenny Dope Gonzalez to the forum with a 90-minute set. Working with Gonzalez will be the dynamic wordsmith Rasheed Chappell, who will also be performing his own 30-minute slot. talking professional bullshitting here. If you actually happen to be interested in the whole rag trade and would sell your grandmother’s knitting set for a seat in the front row, guess what? You actually do not even need any invitation at all in order to enjoy the catwalks, just a whole load of attitude. Remember, you are such a pivotal element in this business, that you are above this whole invitation thingy. Just walk around like you own the place and look snobbish as hell. If this does not get you in, simply enter from the exit and exit through the entrance. Hence making the beloved queuing system a thing of the past. Note to readers, this also works pretty much anywhere in Denmark and that includes concert venues, clubs, private parties, you name it. However, as always, adaptation is key - you just have to be ready, if caught, to come up in a flash with an explanation that will be so confusing that, by the time the bouncer realises what just happened, you will already be hitting the VIP bar, hard, ordering your drinks, four at a time. As with most things here, everything is so well organised, goes so smoothly, with everybody so obedient, that nobody expects you to play the game according to a different set of rules. I have personally tried and tested these techniques several times, made a lot of friends at lavish parties, and even ended up being officially invited, but hey, who needs an invitation when you can have twice the fun without one?

XLVI. THE ROMAN numerals convey it to be 46. Yet whilst the glory of Rome has faded into the tomes and lore of history, there are remnants of the former empire that continue to pay homage to the maxim of strength, honour and magnificence. They do battle in modern day colosseums surrounded by ravenous and unrelenting crowds. Although they wield not sword, mace nor spear, they do bear armour and their weapons are their muscled frames. The roar of the crowd pumps like a heartbeat at the sharp crack of helmet-to-helmet tackles. It’s big hits, bigger plays, one-handed catches and jukes for another ten. It’s Namath with his finger in the air, Elway flying 360, Montana going 92 yards, Dyson needing one yard, Bettis bussin’ through, Lewis crunching someone, Vinatieri sealing the deal. Oh yes, indeed. They are the contemporary gladiators and aspire only to hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy triumphantly into the air in the name of victory. Warriors unite! It’s Super Bowl time baby! (And yes, I have been watching a bit too much Spartacus lately.) On Sunday February 5, the 46th Super Bowl will kick off in Indianapolis featuring the New York Giants and the New England Patriots. It promises to be a classic and one worth seeing in company, so here’s a selection of the top venues showing the game. THE BIG GUNS: Brøndby Stadion Michael Laudrup VIP Lounge, Brøndby Stadion 30, 2605 Brøndby; starts 19:00; 595kr, 4363 1964 Brøndby Stadium’s Michael Laudrup Lounge has two immense bars, 24 x 42 inch flat screens, five monster screens and numerous skyboxes. Attending are the Elm-

ing brothers, famous for their contribution to the rise of NFL in Denmark, who will lead the way with a quiz including some excellent prizes. The event features a massive Super Bowl buffet, which includes spareribs, hotwings, coleslaw, onion rings, chocolate brownies and ice cold Budweisers. Anyone who buys a ticket to the gig will be able to hop on a 25kr shuttle bus back to the city centre after the game is finished. Football, food galore, beer and even some pole dancing, now THAT is the American dream. Parken Lions and Barrels, Øster Allé 50, 2100 Cph Ø; starts 20:00; 450kr, 6996 0040 This event has some local gridiron flair to it as it is co-hosted by the Copenhagen Towers football team. The buffet includes spare ribs, hotdogs and corn on the cob, along with unlimited pints and soft drinks, which could make the 450kr price a steal depending on how much you can put away in one night of football. In addition to this, there will be quizzes, other competitions, lotteries and a 360 degree HD experience with big screens and projectors littering the establishment. Imperial Cinema Ved Vesterport 4, 1612 Cph K; starts 21:00; 199kr, 7013 1211 Not only will Imperial Cinema be showing the game on a massive cinema screen, as one would expect, but they have managed to incorporate an interesting food option to boot. Starting at 21:00, they will be serving sultry American Style burgers with fries from Jensens Bøfhus. A Heineken (not sure about the aesthetics of that beer choice, but it works) or soft drink will be served to wash down the tasty meal. Cinemaxx theatres also have a similar gig, but their meal will consist of Burger King and Budweisers, with nachos and popcorn available all night long.

The helmet catch that defined Super Bowl 42

WORTH YOUR CONSIDERATION: Frederiksberg Hallen Jens Jessens Vej 20, 2000 Frederiksberg; starts 19:00; 249kr, 3874 6564 Frederiksberg Hallen plays host to another fine looking Super Bowl event that is showing the game on a big screen with the usual winning combination of spare ribs, coleslaw, baked potato and BBQ, combined with cheap prices at the bar all night long. Additionally, there will be a Madden 12 competition with cool prizes, and also the Budweiser Cheerleaders will be performing, much to the approval of the guests, I’m sure. Hard Rock Cafe Vesterbrogade 3, 1620 Cph K; starts 22:00; 100kr, 3312 4333 For a mere 100kr you get a snack menu and a Budweiser. There will be fun, games, as well as specials on food and drinks. Everyone knows that football and rock and roll always go hand in hand and the Bud Girls will be patrolling the café making sure of that. Groups are able to book here and it’s nice to watch the big game in the city centre if one fancies post-game shenanigans. But hurry up on this one as the first 50 people to book get a free Budweiser football jersey. CHRISTIAN WENANDE

BY JESSICA O’SULLIVAN

HAVING RECENTLY experienced my first Danish Christmas I have discovered there is one thing I really do love more than presents: frikadeller. This new-found love stayed in my mind long after the celebrations had finished and led me to find out more about this delicious national Danish dish. Frikadeller in theory is similar to the English concept of meatballs, but yet much, much tastier. It is the number one pork dish made by Danes and even as far back as the beginning of the 16th century, this dish, which translated means ‘pure pork’, is recorded in the history books. Due to their love of frikadeller it should come as no surprise that

Danish people eat more pork than any other nationality in the world. It is estimated that each Dane eats almost 60 kilos of pork every year, whilst only eating about 23 kilos of poultry and fish. Frikadeller is traditionally served with potatoes, preserved sour vegetables, pickled beetroot and thick brown sauce - although in my opinion it’s just as good by itself. For those looking to make a scrumptious Danish dish that won’t take hours to create, frikadeller is ideal. Whilst Christmas may be a while off yet, now is as good a time as any to start perfecting a meal that will be sure to wow even the strongest of Danish food critics.

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; www.1th. dk; 1,250kr per person 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a ‘best ever veal experience) and the chocolate cake (‘Oh My God’), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! 3 - 9 February 2012

Chill the meat mixture for 15 to 30 minutes in the refrigerator to make the meatballs easier to form. Heat the butter or margarine in a large frying pan over medium heat. To form meatballs, scoop up about 2 1/2 tablespoons of meat mixture with a large spoon, and form the mixture into a slightly flattened, oval meatball about the size of a small egg. Place the meatballs into the heated pan, and fry for about 15 minutes per side, until the meatballs are well-browned and no longer pink in the centre. Remember that there’s no limit to the number of vegetables or herbs or even spices that you can add to this recipe, although the more chopped garlic, sage, coriander or parsley you add, the less Danish the dish will become.

With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231 www.dalaman.dk; three-course menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. It’s a haven for meat lovers and is popular among its clientele for the meaty mixed grill. AJ

Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open MonSat 12:00-22:00, pub open Mon-Thu 12:00-24:00, FriSat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; www.brewpub.dk; three-course lunch menu 155kr The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH

Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

Look hygge up in the dictionary and it will say Cafe Alma

The Beef bearnaise and the Rooster from Bornholm: both suitable companions for a candlelit evening of excellence

plate. It was creamy and satisfying. One of the dishes we ordered for the main course was the Beef béarnaise. The dish features entrecote covered in mushrooms and homemade fries, as well as the Salad with pumpkin (also offered as a starter). And of course, there is a classic béarnaise sauce. It is a very classic dish presented in a classic way. The other main course was the Rooster from Bornholm. It was incredible. It came with turnips, mashed potatoes and a tarragon sauce. The play of sweet and savory continued with this plate, achieving an amazing

SUNDAY BRUNCH

ONE OF THE FIRST words one learns living in Denmark is ‘hyggeligt’. It is roughly translated as cosy and comfortable. It’s that feeling you get when it’s snowing and cold outside, but you’re inside and warm. Restaurants throughout Copenhagen try to create an environment that is hyggeligt. Café Alma succeeds in providing this kind of atmosphere - one that is comfy and reassuring. Upon entering Café Alma, it’s clear the mood is right. The romantically lit candles and low lighting combined with the rustic look of the restaurant creates a lovely feeling. On the walls there are black and white photographs featuring idyllic shots of town living. There are also old ads, including a French one depicting a woman with lemons and a Danish one for an old group called the KKKK. The cuisine offered at Café Alma could be described as modern Danish. But really, I think of it as Danish comfort food. The menu is fairly short, which usually means good things are to come. The restaurant values quality over quantity. And although Café Alma offers quality, the prices are extremely reasonable. The service at Café Alma was also a major highlight of the evening. The waitresses were friendly and approachable, which also added to the wonderful, cosy atmosphere of the restaurant. They were also helpful recommending wine pairings. For the starter course, we ordered the Lumpsucker roe and the Seasonal plate. For both items, it was recommended that we drink a French wine, the Petit Chablis. According to the menu, it is a “classic white wine…with a hint of dryness and a comfortable tannic acid”. It was light and smooth. The roe was gorgeously pink and flavourful, accompanied by smoked cottage cheese, cucumber, crispy rye bread, and dill. However, it was a fairly light starter compared to the Seasonal plate. The Seasonal plate comes with a whole array of different kinds of meats prepared in different ways. On a literal plank of wood, you are served smoked salmon, smoked prawn, ham from Skagen, smoked doe, roast beef, cauliflower soup and finally, an aioli dip. Though this dish features quantity, everything was of the upmost quality. The sauce that went with each cut of meat was paired quite well, and the sweet-meets-savory combination was glorious. A waitress brought us some homemade bread that was divine. One was dark malt bread and the other was a white bread. The bread served as a delicious instrument to mop up the remaining aioli on the Seasonal

balance of flavour. The chicken was moist while the skin was crispy. It was so tender that it was falling off the bone. Utterly and gorgeously rustic, with a delightful flavour profile. The recommended wine pairing was the Syrah Collection of Chile and it smelled incredible. It tasted lovely as well. Finally, for dessert we ordered the crème brulée and the cheesecake. The best part of any crème brulée is the caramelised sugar - something Café Alma more than understands. We received a very wide, flat ramekin with the crème brulée. The surface area of the caramelised sugar was incredible. The

crème was a little runny, but the flavours were spot on and it was a satisfying way to end the meal. As for the cheesecake, it was surprisingly light and airy compared to the heavy treat it usually is. The crust on the bottom had a great consistency; it was firm but not dry. Overall, it was a delicious dessert as well. Stuffed with delicious food and wine, it was time to end the evening. For a cosy atmosphere and comforting food, put Café Alma at the top of your list.

even if the Hollywood buzz word of late is ‘re-boot’ and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol feels like one, it actually isn’t. But you could be forgiven for feeling this way. Not only have they done away with the numbered titles, but this installment has a fresh quality to it like a carrot straight out of the garden. And you know what they say about dangling a carrot. First time live action director Brad Bird (The Incredibles, Ratatouille and The Iron Giant) making only his fourth movie, rattles off probably the best of the M:I movies. If Tom Cruise saw his enormous talent, why didn’t anybody else? Bird has shown his adeptness with humour, characters and rapid-fire storytelling in animation that should translate well into the action genre. It does. He keeps things jumping like Cruise on Oprah’s couch. This fourth impossible mission, while still full of complex action, gadgets and gimmicks, keeps things fairly black and white – it’s the good guys versus the bad guys and there is no mistaking which is which. The movie starts with a botched IMF job in Hungary and quickly follows up in Russia where IMF agents Jane Carter (Patton) and Benji Dunn (Pegg) are breaking Cruise’s Ethan Hunt out of jail. The reason Hunt is there does not become clear til later

“For god’s sake Tom, now one of your platform shoes has fallen off and hit our cameraman on the head!” in the movie. Once free, Ethan is dispatched, should he choose to accept it, to infiltrate the Kremlin along with Carter and Dunn. Unfortunately, the reason behind their infiltration is a clever cover set-up by madman Kurt Hendricks (Nyqvist), who needs the diversion to steal a nuclear launch device. He bombs the Kremlin, thereby implicating the IMF who are then disavowed by the US government under the term Ghost Protocol (which is a fancy phrase for “We have no idea who you are.”) With the unimaginable imagi-

nable, Cruise must hunt down Hendricks with the help of only three other agents, analyst (hmm, Jeremy Renner – the new face of the Bourne franchise and Hawkeye of The Avengers - as an analyst, hmmm…) William Brandt is also assigned to his team, and only a boxcar of gadgets (still enough to blow anyone’s mind) in order to clear their names and stop Hendricks from blowing up the world. Ghost Protocol’s only holdovers from previous films are Cruise and Pegg, although this time round, Pegg’s comical gadget guy gets signifi-

reason it’s called Mission:Impossible, as sometimes the laws of physics are bent a little bit. But the payoff is worth every one of Newton’s laws. ‘With the exception of a talky epilogue, Ghost Protocol is a whirlwind (storm) of action. Perhaps animation has expanded Bird’s conception of what’s possible in a live film. Or maybe action films have degenerated to the point that they are basically cartoons with live actors. In the end, Bird does it so well, you don’t really care how impossible it may be, you just want to see more.

cantly more screen time for brilliant results. Bird has wrapped this film with a nice outer layer of humour, especially Pegg who has great comedic timing and does a superb job adding humour elements in the darkest moments. Bird never lets things get too serious, which keeps the movie feeling grounded even when Cruise is dangling 130 stories in the air above Dubai. Of course there are moments where the real world and M:I world are so far apart you could only see them if you are Galileo, but there is a

lthough the name would imply otherwise, if you’re looking for a lot of action, you won’t find it here. But that doesn’t mean that this film is not vicious. Carnage is funny and entertaining, which is an impressive

feat when one considers that the film basically consists of watching four people argue. The situation that the characters find themselves is simple. There are two sets of parents and their sons have got into a fight. The parents are meeting to try to come to an understanding about the events that have transgressed. As uncomfortable truths come out, the day devolves into verbal carnage. Even from the beginning of the film, we can feel the tension amongst the parents. Carnage succeeds in taking the traditional bickering couple and doubling it to create an intriguing dynamic. As the film progresses we see alliances build

up, break down and switch, based on gender as well as other commonalities. Carnage is a film that is very obviously based on a play. The whole film takes place in one apartment (and its hallway) and focuses on only four characters. It is extremely dialogue heavy. The restrictions of the medium of theatre are pretty much directly translated into the film. For a script that focuses so heavily on dialogue, it is lucky that the dialogue is so well written and realistic. Although it does seem a tad unrealistic that this kind of interaction would ever develop this way. Why the visiting couple never leave out of politeness, yet act so impolite, is a conundrum.

The talent necessary to pull off a film like this was definitely there. The acting was very good indeed, though the men seem to have been given more likeable and charming roles - especially Alan Cowan (Waltz). These are flawed people, but their motivations were entirely believable. Unfortunately, there really is no character development. There are certainly revelations and further explination of who these people are, but this is not a situation where anybody appears to have learned a life lesson. If anything, these people leave the situation feeling more justified and grounded in their beliefs. ELIZABETH DELLAPENNA

New this Week Splatter classics from the ‘80s

Husets Biograf; Wed 19:00 & 21:00; tickets: 50kr per film, 70kr for both NEKRomantik and Reanimator are rather bizarre horror films, both with a comedy twist. The highly controversial German low-budget film NEKRomantik tells the story of Rob, a young mortuary attendant who lives with his girlfriend, Betty. Basically they like to steal decomposing corpses, take them home, and have a ‘ménage à trois’ with them. When Rob is fired from his job, Betty gets fed up with her dead-end existence and leaves him taking the skeletal remains with her. On his own, and not having access anymore to deceased bodies, Rob turns to murder to achieve his necrophilic urges. Reanimator is only a little less freakish - it tells the story of a medical student and his girlfriend who become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus. The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis Whilst the film stays true to the mythical and timeless of Tintin, the slick film techniques and 3D wizardry makes it a modern story for a modern audience. JOS

Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; US thriller, 2011; 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Extraordinary tension ignited by brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE

War Horse Dir: Steven Speilberg; US drama, 2011, 145 mins; Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson, Peter Mullin, David Thewlis, Tom Hiddleston are you the sentimental type who cries at weddings? Then you will absolutely love this movie. If you are a cynic and a cranky old fart, you will find the sentimentality of this movie overbearing.

My Week With Marilyn (3) 50/50 (7) Dir: Jonathan Levine; US dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Bryce Dallas Howard The ability to get laughs out of an illness so devastating as cancer is difficult- getting them without being

Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe.

Avoid like the Plague The Darkest Hour (11) Dir: Chris Gorak; US horror, 2011, 89 min; Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella Like many horror movies, at the beginning everything seems hunky dory until it all turns apocalyptic. The Darkest Hour was predictable and predictably bad and will leave audiences feeling confused and frustrated. ED

In Time (11) Dir: Andrew Niccol; 2011; 109 mins; Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy While the cast’s looks may be hot the action scenes are not – most are blatantly mundane at times. As one reviewer said “In Time fills its dynamic, sprawling universe with about as much character and drama as a halfhour game of Sim City.” EM

New Year’s Eve (3)

The Inbetweeners (11)

This Must Be the Place

Dir: Garry Marshall A tepid, shallow and predictable farce full of trivial problems. If it’s feel-good fluff you’re after, here’s enough for a whole year. KG

Dir: Ben Palmer; UK com, 2011, 93 mins; Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas As with many TV to film transitions the tendency can be to adopt a more benign approach to its previous incarnation – thankfully the film retains much of its signature crudity but it does lose something by attempting to give us more. MW

Dir: Paolo Sorrentino; Fra/ Ita/Ire dramedy, 2011, 118 mins; Sean Penn, Frances McDormand Cheyenne (Penn) is a retired rock musician. After receiving word of his father’s death he promptly returns to his birthplace of New York where he learns of his father’s life quest: to track down a Nazi officer from the concentration camp where he was imprisoned. There’s an awkward sense that the jaunty visual comedy of Penn as an ageing rocker belongs in a different genre than that of Nazi war camps. Yes, they form a coherent whole that is both entertaining and superficially engaging, but the problem lies in the lack of sincerity within the subjects themselves. MW

Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I (11) Dir: Bill Condon; US drama, 2011, 117 mins; Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Strictly for teenagers of the female variety. EM

Also Playing The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo (15) Dir: David Fincher; US thriller, 2011, 158 mins; Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer Something about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo jars. Whether it’s the fact that all of Stockholm unaccountably speaks English, or that Fincher’s version has grown up in the shadow of its model – an excellent work – is hard to say. Although not destined to become a modern classic, this will no doubt excite many. KRG

The Help (7) Dir: Tate Taylor; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard Set in the ‘60s Mississippi, the film has a political backdrop, but despite pulling on the heartstrings, The Help is entertaining and enjoyable. ED

Real Steel (11) Dir: Shawn Levy; US action, 2011, 126 mins; Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly Real Steel has a fairly predictable plot and an ending so cheesy that you are liable to choke on it. However, you find yourself caring not only about the human characters but the robots too. All in all, Real Steel looks like the real deal. KE

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (11) Dir. Guy Ritchie. US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. There isn’t anything to really bring it all together though, but you’ll still have fun with this one. KE

J. Edgar (11) Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts. Armie Hammer, Judi Dench Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE

The music never stopped Dir: Jim Kohlberg; US drama, 105 mins; J.K. Simmons, Lou Taylor Pucci, Julia Orman This film is like a satisfying meal; it isn’t too heavy and leaves you feeling content afterwards. ED

Sherlock - season two

spor t THE W OF EEK

SV1, Sat 21:30

SETTING Sherlock Holmes in the modern day hasn’t always worked. While many might cite Basil Rathbone as their favourite, only the first two of his 14 films were actually set in the 19th century. The rest were set in the 1940s and gave Joesph Goebbels a run for his money. In the first of them he foils a Nazi invasion and tweely tells Watson in the final scene that while “there’s an east wind coming”, there will be a “greener, better, stronger land” once the wind’s cleared – pretty much exactly what the ‘yanks’ wanted to hear in 1942. Fortunately, the excellent Sherlock, which is back with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman again on board, is neither rancid propaganda or flaccid melodrama. It’s a modern day adaptation masterclass, particularly the second episode,

‘The Hounds of Baskerville’, a riveting reshaping of Conan Doyle’s finest hour/hound. But given that the final part of the three-episode season is entitled ‘The Reichenbach Fall’, will Holmes be back for a third? Proving that even press releases can be mysterious, the first line of the promo for Girl Model, which claimed it “shows a rarely seen side of the fashion industry”, had me thinking it was going to be a feelgood hurrah about a regulated, responsible industry, not a depiction of exploited, soon-to-be bulimic, eastern European models two days away from prostitution should they say the wrong thing. Oh, and here’s the second line: “Ashley, an American former model, travels to remote Siberian villages to scout young teenaged girls for fashion shoots in

Japan.” Good work. Keep up the appalling behaviour and we’ll carry on blindly keeping you all in nylon tights. Elsewhere, Mixed Britannia (BBC World, Fri 20:30) looks at Britain’s immigration history; Mixed Up In The Middle East (BBC World, Sun 21:10) follows a British girl with half Arab/half Jew- SV1, Sat 21:30 Sherlock - season two ish parents who visits the Middle East for the first time; Chelsea vs Manchester United (Sun 16:30) and Liverpool vs Tottenham (Mon 20:55) are the pick of K6’s PL games; and in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People (DR HD, Tue 21:25) Simon Pegg demonstrates how making a US film can be the quickest way to lose friends and alienate people in your own country.
