BEN HAMILTON
I’M SURPRISED to see that this week’s films, The Artist and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (see G18), have such low ratings given how high the praise has been elsewhere. Metacritic, for example, which is surely the most reliable online movie barometer, gives them 89 and 85 respectively, the second and fourth highest scores of the last three months. And I have to admit that I would have been inclined to jump on the bandwagon and give The Artist six stars. It’s a massive 1/5 favourite to win the Oscar later this month; it’s probably technically very good; you have to applaud the bravery of, in this day and age, making a silent movie; it will undoubtedly make Francophiles of us all as we increase our daily usage of “Oh, la, la” and “Mais oui” despite it not even having any words; and it’s even got the cuddly toy factor - more column inches have been written about the unfortunate curtailment of the career of the lead dog (a Jack Russell no less: nippy
little bastards with a Napoleon complex) than the ongoing atrocities in the horn of Africa. And don’t forget the reviewer’s obligation to compare like with like. Because, whichever way you look at it, it’s one of the best silent movies of the last 80 years, along with Mel Brooks’ Silent Movie (1976), in which the only line is delivered by mime artist Marcel Marceau - how droll! But it would be an insincere opinion. I wouldn’t watch a silent movie unless you paid me – funnily enough, while I have a similar effrontery to opera, I have actually seen La Traviata (see G2) and it is the perfect pre-Valentine moodsetter (see G9 for more) until she finds out she’s got tuberculosis – which fortunately in our case is what we routinely do to obtain reviews. But while it doesn’t look good us giving three stars to the winner of the best picture Oscar for the second time in three years (the other was The Hurt Locker, which won for 2009 despite being released outside the US in 2008 – see G20 for our film of the week), I applaud our reviewer for his stance. Talking’s good. To echo a line from Diamonds are Forever, if god had wanted us to make silent movies, he wouldn’t have given us vocal chords.

La Traviata
Operaen, Store Scene, Ekvipagemestervej 10, 1438 Cph K; starts Feb 10, ends April 26, performances at 20:00 (unless stated) on Fri, Sun (15:00), Feb 25, March 7, March 9, March 12, March 14, March 17 (12:00), March 21, March 23, March 27, March 29, April 1 (15:00), April 10, April 16, April 24, April 26; tickets 95-895kr; 170 mins including intermission; in Italian with Danish supertitles; www.kglteater.dk THE ITALIAN OPERA La Traviata arrives at the Royal Opera House this month, and the hype is so big that some performances are nearly sold out. Written by Giuseppe Verdi and set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, this classic love story has proved enduringly popular since the 1850s. Indeed, it’s currently the second most performed opera in the world, trailing only behind The Magic Flute. See it once and you’ll understand why.

Because inspired by their deep resentments towards Margaret Thatcher, the two performers, Emma-Cecilia Ajanki and Julia Giertz (aka The Mob), have put together a show in which the infamous Iron Lady gets it. Cleverly combining humour, quirky technical features and - of course – animosity, they depict their dislike of Thatcher
Based on La Dame aux Camélias, a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas, it tells of the tragic romance between Violetta Valéry and Alfredo Germont. Act one, full of joviality and optimism, sees the lovers meet for the first time, joining together in the famous drinking song (‘Brindisi: Libiamo’) before Alfredo confesses his love (‘Un di Felice’), thereby sowing the seeds of their future romance. By act two they are living together in seemingly domestic bliss (‘De’ miei bollenti spiriti’) before the age-old relationship breakers - financial woes, family pressures, jealousy and a tangle of misunderstandings lead to Alfredo humiliating Violetta (Questa donna conoscete) and winding up in a duel. The final reconciliatory and lump-in-throat inducing act sees Alfredo discover how he has misread and mistreated Violetta, returning to beg forgiveness only to find her struck down by tuberculosis. Having planned to leave Paris together forever (‘Parigi, o cara’) Violetta falls dead at her lover’s feet.

The Copenhagen performance, which is sung in Italian with Danish supertitles, has a cast packed with Danes. Royal Danish Opera soprano Gisela Stille takes on her firstever appearance in the role of Violetta. A fellow Dane and first prize-winner of the Gosta Winbergh Award in 2006, the tenor Peter Lodahl, plays Alfredo. Regular opera-goers may also recognise baritone Palle Knudsen as Giorgio Germont and the soprano LiseLotte Nielsen as Annina. It is directed by David Radok who has staged several of the Royal Opera’s successes, including The Rake’s Progress, and given a modern overhaul by set designer Lars-Ake Thessman with costumes by Ann-Mari Antila. Men in suits and women in ball gowns bridge the gap between Verdi’s Paris and now. If you’re a Danish speaker, rock up 30 minutes early to hear a ten-minute free introduction to the show. Not exactly what Nixon had in mind The War on Drugs
Lille Vega Thursday 16 Feb, 21:00; 160kr; www.vega.dk www.thewarondrugs.net
T
HE WAR ON DRUGS play an unusual hybrid of sounds - if Bruce Springsteen had a baby with Bob Dylan in the ‘80s, and it was raised by Neil Young and U2, it would have been called The War on Drugs. And it’s not just their sound that’s unusual. Forty years ago US President Nixon declared a “war on drugs”, identifying drug abuse as “public enemy
number one”. “We’re not anti-drugs or anything, it just sounds cool,” frontman Adam Granduciel told Australia’s TNT Magazine. The War on Drugs - the American band, that is - maintains an important connection to musical trends that were in full bloom when Nixon uttered that phrase. Granduciel is the driving force behind the Philadelphian band. Back in 2003, Granduciel moved from Oakland, California, to Philly and began collaborating with a local musician, the alternative guitarist and singer Kurt Vile, on many of his early albums. The two soon began a new project that became The War on Drugs. They released their first album Wagonwheel Blues in 2008. However, by the end of
that year, three of the four band members had left - including Kurt Vile, who decided to pursue a solo career. Then drummer Mike Zanghi and bassist Dave Hartley joined Granduciel, a lineup that made its record debut with the mini-album, Future Weather, in 2010. The following year, multi-instrumentalist Robbie Bennett joined the fold for Slave Ambient, the band’s second fulllength album. Upon its release in 2011, Slave Ambient received general acclaim from music critics. On Metacritic, the album received an average rating of 81 based on 28 reviews, indicating ‘universal acclaim’. American music website Pitchfork bestowed the album with its ‘Best
New Music’ and awarded it with a rating of 8.3 out of 10, describing it as “excellent road-trip music”. Pitchfork wrote: “The really amazing thing about the album is how anthemic and affirming it feels despite the near total absence of proper sing-along choruses.” The release of Slave Ambient coincided with a European tour. After a series of cancellations, The War on Drugs had their first gig on Danish soil at Christiania’s music venue Loppen last September. In interviews, Granduciel had expressed concern about the band’s ability to duplicate live what they do in the studio. He needn’t have worried - they have proven to be a terrific live band. “Before the record came out, I
wasn’t sure how we were going to play a lot of them, but then everyone was super-confident in their playing, and it only took us a few rehearsals to where they sounded just great,” Granduciel said in an interview with the American entertainment website AV Club. Danish music and lifestyle magazine Soundvenue reviewed their gig at Loppen and gave it 5 out of 6 stars. As part of their five-month tour, on which they will perform 35 gigs, Vega will host The War on Drugs on 16 February, with the show scheduled to begin at 21:00. Check internet forums for tickets. here are, admittedly, few places to go out on a wintry Monday night in Copenhagen, and fewer still in the midst of the cold spell that’s been gnawing at our fingertips and cracking our lips of late. Nørrebro’s Kind of Blue is a bar that provides music of a different sort for those lonely Monday evenings when the streets seem darker and colder than usual. Now in its tenth installation, ‘Tangled Up In Blue’ is a singer-songwriter orientated evening Ebdk provides Copenhagen’s most talented names within the genre an opportunity to share their powerful, emotionallycharged music. This particular installation of the event featured German songbird Paula Tebbens accompanied by pianist Edoardo Bottalico (EDBK), Americana rock nomad MC Hansen and folk singer Julie Dybvad, who was backed

Jazzhus Montmartre; 20:00; 250kr The young Norwegian tenor saxophonist, Marius Neset, will be joined by a trio of new-generation jazz musicians, including British pianist Nick Ramm and Swedish drummer Anton Eger. Touring extensively through Scandinavia and the UK, Neset has experienced unparalleled success for a musician of his tender age. Perhaps most impressive is the recognition of his talent by The Guardian, which gave his latest album a five-star review. Introducing a new vocabulary to the tenor saxophone, Neset is at the forefront of the European contemporary jazz scene. (English/Danish)

MUSEUMS CORNER
GERTRUDE KIEL, KULTURKLIK.DK
Time travel to the 1950s home EVERYONE has a right to have a cool kitchen! Or at least that’s what a TV commercial read a couple of years ago. Sixty years ago, though, ‘a cool kitchen’ was an ideal few could afford to have. Our modern welfare state was founded in a decade where moderation and cramped conditions were the norm rather than the exception. But the 1950s were also an age packed with innovation and creativity. Both the stylish architectonical pure lines and Madam Blue of the worker home are haunting us to this very day with new, nostalgic retro features. Join Kulturklik on a time travelling experience as we invite you inside the 1950s home. Golden Age of Danish Design Design Museum Denmark (Bredgade 68, 1260 Cph K; open Tue-Sun 11:00-17:00) holds one of the most extensive collections of Danish furniture classics from the post-war time. The museum resides in the building, which once was the Royal Highness Frederik’s Hospital. In the old rococo hospital’s long corridors one can admire familar chairs and other renowned design objects by Finn Juhl, Børge Mogensen, Poul Henningsen and Arne Jacobsen, among others. The museum is the perfect place to delve into the history of design, as it was here the Cabinetmakers Guild’s influential annual furniture exhibition was held (from 1927–1966), where many of the classics were brought out for the very first time. After all, the purpose

of the exhibition was, among other things, to create furniture for the tworoom apartment. The worker’s daily life It was a while, though, before the Ant and PH-lamp became a common sight in the average home. A visit to the Worker’s Museum (Rømersgade 22, 1362 Cph K; open daily 10:0017:00) gives you an insight into the 1950s home as it was for the majority of Danes. Visitors born before 1950 do quite frequently exclaim: “We had something like that!” when they walk in. Nostalgically admire the furniture made in solid teak, bright colours, mottled curtains, travel-size gramophones, curlers, copper cauldrons and bunk beds. And remember the hardship as the non-existent minimalism is not merely a cover up for bad taste, but tells of poor circumstances too. When you compare the blue-painted Copenhagener’s kitchen with the modern sociable kitchen, you can almost see the revolutionary home evolution happen in front of your eyes. Above the small cooker hangs a coin meter, which had to be fed with your small change to obtain the gas, and the refrigerator was not taken for granted either. Having one meant you didn’t have to place the cold cuts adjacent to the windowsills to delay their rotting. mark the museum’s 100th anniversary, a new exhibition in the halls of the old iron foundry, ‘Home, dear home’, invites you to experience the technology of the average 1950s home. During the decade, the electric cooker, washing machine and Ballerup mastermix were but a few of the instruments that changed the daily life of the Danes. The family got together in front of the TV, Nilfisk declared war against dust, and transistor radios introduced rock and roll into our living rooms. Banning homosexuality Norms and taboos have also changed inside the domestic home since the 1950s. At the Police Museum (Fælledvej 20, 2200 Cph N; open Tue-Thu & Sun 11:00-16:00) you can see the taboos and norms of old close up. The museum keeps confiscated material from some pretty perverse sexual crimes, which tells of a wholly different time and age. Although, a few of the ‘crimes’ - transsexuality and homosexuality - are considered legal today. Much more about the 1950s Got a taste of the 1950s? VALENTINE’S DAY might just be the absolute coldest day of the year outside, but not necessarily inside. Celebrating the day of love at Copenhagen Marriott Hotel where the mood is set for romance, you get to spend quality time with your significant other in one of their luxurious and newly renovated rooms, and enjoy the four-course Valentine special with bubbles and wine in the restaurant. There you are fidgeting with the mascara and considering trying on the skinny jeans you haven’t worn since last spring. After all, this is the one day a year you shouldn’t be thinking about the comfort of stretchy pants. Seconds later, you’re standing in the hall trying to decide whether to throw on a nice pair of heels or your favourite pair of worn-out winter boots, and the argument from before returns, but it seems less convincing the more you think about it. You hear steps outside. Your loved one comes home after a long day at work and expects just another night with spaghetti and meatballs in front of the TV, but you surprise him with a night at Marriott. Here you have already chosen a room with either a city or water view. Obviously, the water front provides a more relaxed atmosphere, but the city side gives you a more edgy view of Copenhagen, which is especially nice at nighttime. After settling in the room – he checks out the TV channels and you the bathroom supplies – you go downstairs for the four-course meal at the Midtown Grill. Here the friendly wait-

How many deadly sins can you indulge in? Choccies, vino, stretchy pants - we’re in heaven
ers will get you started with a glass of bubbly that you enjoy with delicious hors d’oeuvres that consist of different tapenades in small glasses that unfortunately empty quickly. But otherwise the delicately picked ingredients in small portions throughout the courses definitely are enough to both satisfy your eyes and stomach. The courses consist of Oyster ravioli – an aphrodisiac to set the right mood - Gravid lax, Medallion of beef and, last but not least, the dessert is a lovely Chocolate fondant with berries, caramel and orange sorbet. And then spend the night in one of the hotel’s newly refurbished rooms. Even though the hotel is only ten years old, it recently felt the need to update, which it has managed, still keeping the feeling of homely comfort that businessmen the world over have adopted as a second home. The new style is more
Scandinavian than before with clean cut furniture and earth tones, but the American touch is conspicuous. And if you plan on getting lucky, the only protection you’ll find in the room is the Holy Bible, and the book of Mormons, both of which are placed in the drawers on the side of the bed - as they make handy weapons. If you aren’t a fan of bedtime reading, the TV is right where you left it, and full of entertaining programmes or films, some more expensive than others. The morning after you might as well enjoy the huge breakfast buffet, before you pack up your personal belongings - and maybe a soap or two - and head back out in the cold. Valentine’s Day is over and it’s back to the spaghetti and stretchy pants. MALENE ØRSTED

IN HONOUR of Valentine’s Day, I thought a chocolaty, decadent-tasting dessert would be a good recipe choice. However, to help with sticking to the popular New Year’s resolution of weight loss and living healthier, the recipe is also relatively healthy. Though it tastes rich, there’s only about 100 calories per serving and it’s only high in protein. I present to you: tofu chocolate mousse! I actually came across this recipe a while back when I accidentally bought silken tofu instead of firm. When doing a stirfry, you’re supposed to use firm tofu, because silken just falls apart. So now what? I googled some recipes and thought this one sounded simple (it is!).
It also seemed like an intriguing experiment. My boyfriend hates tofu. Tofu does not have a lot of flavour and usually just absorbs whatever you soak it in. So I can understand not liking it. I thought this might be an interesting chance to see if I could get him to eat it and actually like it. He loved it! And he would never have guessed that I used tofu. As you can tell, I cannot stop raving about this recipe. I think it’s delectable, decadent, and delightful. Apparently, the recipe is also vegan, which would make sense. That’s just an added bonus. Anyway, here’s to a lovely Valentine’s Day!

Restaurant Kiin Kiin Guldbergsgade 21, Cph N; 3535 7535; four-course menu 450kr, seven-course 775kr (with wine menu 1450kr); www.kiin.dk There are only two Thai restaurants in the whole world that have been awarded a Michelin star. One of them is in London, the other one is Kiin Kiin, which you’ll find in the heart of Nørrebro. And it’s well deserved. Kiin Kiin isn’t just a restaurant, it’s an experience, a place where every little detail is thought through. PDR 1. th. Herluf Gade 9, Cph K; 3393 5770, 1th@1th.dk; 1,250kr per person; www.1th.dk 1. th. is a gourmet restaurant with a twist. Tucked away behind a hard to-find-door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. Terrific food, friendly and attentive service and a unique setting. CS Reinwald’s Farvergade 15, 1463 Cph K; open Mon-Sat 14:00-24:00 (kitchen closes at 22:00); 3391 8289; five-course menu with wine 850kr, other dishes 75-215kr; www.reinwalds. dk Serving lunch and dinner, a director’s-script length of choices confronts you at Reinwald’s. It’s a who’s who of classic French and French-inspired Danish dishes as well as a monthly set menu. Any chef would be proud of this. SC
Cap Horn Nyhavn 21, Cph K; open Mon-Fri 10:00-00:00, Sat-Sun 09:00-00:00; 3312 8504; starters from 99kr, main courses from 139kr, desserts from 39kr; see www.caphorn.dk for special events Nyhavn, the old harbour, is an idyllic area of magic and hygge what the Danes like to say when referring to anything that is cosy, charming, or delightful: all qualities Cap Horn has in abundance. Its simple menu boasts a fine selection of organic, homemade Danish fare, with a touch of seasonal influence. There were two highlights: the veal, pumpkin, mushrooms and potatoes with amazing truffle sauce (a “best ever veal experience”) and the chocolate cake (“Oh My God”), which was possibly the best chocolate cake ever! MM BioMio Halmtorvet 19, 1700 Cph V; open daily 12:00-24:00 (later Fri and Sat), kitchen open 12:00-22:00; 3331 2000; starters 75kr, mains 135kr; www. biomio.dk Located in an old warehouse next to trendy Kødbyen, Bio Mio is certainly unusual for conservative Copenhagen. It’s stylish without being pretentious, fast enough that you don’t go crazy waiting for food, and loud enough that you can make a racket without anyone raising an eyebrow. Tofu chocolate mousse Serves: eight
350g tofu 80g bittersweet chocolate, chopped 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder 50g maple syrup 1 tsp vanilla extract FIRST ADD the tofu to a blender and blend it for about a minute until it comes out smooth (my blender is not of good quality, so it took more than a minute). Next it is time to melt the chocolate. It is usually recommended that you use a double boiler, but I live in a collegium and do not have such luxuries. If you are like me and do not own a double boiler, there is another way to melt the chocolate. For this you will need two pots, one larger and one smaller.
Oysters & Grill Sjællandsgade 1B, 2200 Cph N; open Mon-Sat 17:30-24:00, Sun 12:00-21:00; oysters cost 15-35kr each, main courses cost 135-185kr; 7020 6171; www.cofoco.dk Oysters & Grill is not rocket science, yet it gives diners in Copenhagen access to fresh and delicious food at reasonable prices with an emphasis on seafood, fish and meats, which are prepared simply and flavourfully. NA Thai Flavours Vesterbrogade 30, Cph V; open Sun-Thu 12:00-23:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-23:30; Starters 60kr, mains 100kr; 3331 3170, thaiflavours30@gmail.com; www.thaiflavours.dk A worthy exponent of the Thai kitchen has opened recently in Vesterbro, just one block from the Planetarium and the lakes. The utterly unpretentious yet stylish Thai Flavours has a hospitable and authentic atmosphere and walls that let you breathe. KRG Saga Queen Havnegade 31, Cph K (near Nyhavn); sails twice Thu-Sat at 13:00 (lunch ) & 19:00 (dinner); reservations 4675 6460 & info@sagaqueen.dk; www. sagaqueen.dk The city’s only restaurant cruise ship, the Saga Queen offers a two-hour lunch cruise and a three-hour dinner cruise. Every table has a wonderful window view, and there’s a choice of set menus. Sometimes a meal can feel like an eternity, but here the time passed by quickly and pleasurably as we enjoyed a feast for both our eyes and our very satisfied stomachs. JC Brasserie Degas Trommesalen 5, Cph V; 3322 2826; see www.brasseriedegas.dk for more info If you like macarons, this is the place to get them. The brasserie also serves main courses like fried duck breast with wild mushrooms. TDF
10 - 16 February 2012
Fill the large pot with water and bring that to the boil. Once the water is boiling, hold another small pot over it with the chocolate. The steam from the boiling water will melt the chocolate in the pot above. Voila! Remove the pot of melted chocolate from the heat and add the cocoa powder. Stir until smooth and combined. From there, add the chocolate combination to the blender, along with the maple syrup and the vanilla. Blend it until everything is combined. Finally, scoop out the mixture and put it into cups or ramekins. Chill in the refrigerator for at least two hours. The original recipe should make around eight servings. A fruit garnish adds colour and extra flavour; think any fruit that goes well with chocolate. Enjoy!

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dum Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. SC Restaurant Dalaman Vodroffsvej 15, Frederiksberg C; Open daily 16:0024:00; 3322 1231; threecourse menus 119kr, 139kr & 159kr pp; www.dalaman.dk Turkish restaurant Dalaman puts an emphasis on good food and customer satisfaction. It’s a haven for meat lovers and is popular among its clientele for the meaty mixed grill. AJ
Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

The currently available main within the five-course meal is a pork side (stewed for eight hours in an oven at 90°C) served on a bed of roasted potatoes with a side of small onions braised in (what else, but) a New York Lager. It’s a seemingly uncomplicated, but mouthwatering dish that demands the full attention of our taste buds. After that, an obligatory cheese plate is presented, served with “sweet and crunchy goodies” (a quote from

SUNDAY BRUNCH
CONVENIENTLY located just off Sankt Hans Torv, Nørrebro Bryghus opened its doors to the public in 2003 and has brewed around 28 beers since. It is a gem of a place: a blend of a brewery, restaurant, and a bar. As the name suggests, it is a place revolving around and completely devoted to beer, a brewery which makes, serves, and sells it. It is impossible, therefore, to talk about it without constantly mentioning the beverage that is infused into the very nature of this place. “For every dish in the world there is a beer that matches it,” claims the website of Nørrebro Bryghus, and it is clearly a motto that they live by and have successfully implemented in their kitchen. Beer is a key ingredient in many of their dishes: starters, mains, and desserts (go figure), as well as a dish in itself (as assured by the waitress about a particularly dark and strongly flavoured one). If chosen with a bit of knowledge or with the help of the staff, who know their way around various types of beers, it enhances and enriches the dining experience. The locale consists of three parts: the brewery, the bar and the restaurant. All is lit by a dim, orange glow. The restaurant itself is situated on the upper floor, so that it gives the guests a view of the barrels, tanks and boilers, where the beer is prepared and fermented. It enables them close contact with the whole process of making beer, which perhaps serves the cunning purpose of impressing the patrons and allowing them to understand and enjoy the food even more. Nørrebro Bryghus claims an allegiance to the traditional Nordic kitchen (albeit refined, and by no means conventional). They offer lunches and dinners. The star of the evening show is a five-course menu that the chef recommends. However, apparently very few people finish off all their beers that come with the food. So, if you do not want to overindulge yourself, the most optimal choice would be to go for the ‘Early Dinner’ (three-course) menu. Be aware, though, that the table must be vacated by 19:30. Nevertheless, it is really worth it. The starters are light, delicious, and intriguing – I got to sample a Brandade of cod with boiled beet roots and capers and a terrine of winter vegetables served with pickles. They looked and tasted incredible. The mains are much more interest-
the menu, but it is very accurate). The coup de grâce, just to finish everything off with flair and conquer the defences of any person with a sweet-tooth, was the dessert: winter apples poached in Little Korkny Ale (well, there you have it) served with almond tart and apple crème. Heavenly! As I mentioned before, every dish here can be accompanied by a glass of beer especially selected for this particular plate. The starters get a light, unassuming, blonde beer and the further into the meal we dive, the darker and more intense the beers get.
Nørrebro Bryghus is perfectly suited for a great night out with friends, your better half or a company dinner. And if you are lucky, you will get to listen to one of the free jazz concerts they host as a part of the ongoing Winter Jazz Festival. They perform downstairs, in the bar section of the venue. All in all, it was a fantastic dining experience that I recommend to anyone who wants to enjoy a taste of traditional Nordic food with a beer-inspired twist.

G18 More of a piss-take artist than an artiste of the screen FILM

The Artist (7)
Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel drama-comedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell
Premiered February 9 Playing nationwide
G
eorge Valentin (Dujardin) is the toast of Hollywood’s silent era. A swashbuckling smoothie with pearly whites and devilish screen charisma, Valentin has a beautiful wife, a giant house in the Hollywood hills and a cuddly canine companion to boot - everything a man could desire. And then one day he has a chance encounter with a lowly background artist by the name of Peggy Miller (Bejo). She awakens something within him, showing him exactly what his life is lacking. As their attraction to one another grows, Valentin’s life begins to collapse. With the advent of ‘talkies’ his career is quickly diminished. Conversely, Peggy has moved on from background work to usher in this era as the studio’s new leading lady. They lose touch as her star ascends and Valentin’s spirals further downwards. Before long though, fate inevitably conspires to reunite the pair. It’s impossible to see this film without certain preconceptions. It arrives here on Danish shores amid glowing press. Boasting relatively unknown leads and appearing on the festival circuit from seemingly nowhere in 2011, this film has quickly become the darling of this current season of award ceremonies. Cannes and Golden Globes wins are hotly tipped to be followed by glory at the imminent BAFTA and Oscar ceremonies. Perhaps then it’s important to briefly look at from where this film did emerge.
They’re lapping up the applause, but being a silent movie, how can they be sure that anyone’s really clapping Writer/director Michel Hazanavicius has been active for many years but has only made two full-length films prior to this. These were both comedies that, despite being commercial ventures, you would be unlikely to have seen outside of France. “OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies” (2006), and its sequel from 2009, are James Bond spoofs, a French response to Austin Powers or Johnny English. While these films have a more restrained humour, they are meticulously crafted, with a keen eye for ‘60s Connery-era aesthetics. There are clear parallels between The
Artist and Hazanavicus’s two spy spoof films. The Artist’s lead, Dujardin, is also the lead in these two previous films (bearing more than a passing resemblance to a youthful Sean Connery) and in all three outings he exhibits a boundless charm, an infectious energy and a flair for physical comedy. As with the spy films, The Artist’s visuals have been constructed with painstaking care and indepth period detail. From the opening credits sequence up to the last frame we are convincingly transported to a forgotten Hollywood of the 1920s and 1930s. So does the DNA from Hazana-
vicus’s previous films reveal The Artist to be little more than a competent comedic spoof on early American cinema? Yes and no. It’s not an entirely soulless venture. Dujardin and Bejo are joyful in many of their early scenes together and they give as much as their restraints allow but the ‘Prince Charming meets Cinderella’ premise of the film is thinner than the celluloid it’s printed on. Initially peppered with some hilarious visual set pieces, the predictable narrative quickly runs out of steam by the second third and the leads’ admirable chemistry fail to fire it up again.
It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. Perhaps fans of Jeunet’s Amelie (2001), that other pretty French export with a similarly insubstantial romantic element, may well find that the strawberries and cream of this film is enough to leave them satiated, but a more discerning audience will require more than just sweets to feel full.
The most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Dir: Tomas Alfredson; UK/Fra/Ger thriller, 2011, 127 mins; Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy
Premiered Feb 9 Playing nationwide
A
t the height of the Cold War, a recently retired George Smiley (Oldman) is secretly recommissioned by top brass at the British Secret Service (aka The Circus) when they discover that they have in their midst a Russian operative,
working in the upper echelons of their own command. Tasked with learning the identity of this traitor, Smiley has to remain under the cover of his retirement while enlisting help from inside. He must determine who can be trusted to assist him in the analysis of five suspects, all highranking intelligence officers. Collecting the most desirable ensemble cast of recent years, Swedish director Tomas Alfredson has hand-picked some of the greatest on-screen talent working today: old-school veterans such as John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds and Gary Oldman are complemented perfectly by fashionable young guns: Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy and a woefully underused Stephen
Graham. This is the second time John Le Carre’s 1973 novel Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy has been adapted for the screen - the first being a TV series in 1978 starring Sir Alec Guinness in the role of George Smiley. With this in mind, even before seeing the film, one might suspect a potential weakness in the condensed running time. The narrative is episodic, divided into spending concentrated time with individual operatives. In attempting to communicate in two hours all the material that the TV series allowed itself several episodes to convey means that through the course of the film we are left struggling to fully engage with any of the numerous characters.
On the other hand, London never looked more Scandinavian-cool; it’s all sombre white-skies and cigarette smoke in shadowy rooms. Alfredson has a steely hand and is a great director-as-stylist. Like his phenomenally successful horror ‘Let The Right One In’, the lighting is all subdued nostalgic naturalism, carefully framed with a restrained deftness of touch. One only wishes he’d displayed equal skill in administering his film’s narrative with an enema. Atmospheric and stylish yes, but this has to be the most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory. New this Week Classic War Propoganda
Husets Biograf; Wed 19:00 & 20:00; tickets: 50kr for both films Your Job In Germany, Our Job In Japan and Jøden Süss are three propaganda films from the Second World War. Your Job In Germany and Our Job In Japan are two military training films produced by the US Army at the end of the war to show that German and Japanese minds were “diseased”. Jøden Süss has been characterised as “one of the most notorious and successful pieces of anti-semitic film propaganda produced in Nazi Germany”. It was a great success in Germany, with more than 20 million viewers. The film premeried in Denmark in 1941. MH
Book Your Tickets The Adventures of Tintin 3D (7) Dir: Steven Spielberg; US action, 2011, 107mins; Jamie Bell, Daniel Craig, Andy Serkis Whilst the film stays true to the mythical and timeless of Tintin, the slick film techniques and 3D wizardry makes it a modern story for a modern audience. JOS

Christopher Plummer Something about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo jars. Whether it’s the fact that all of Stockholm unaccountably speaks English, or that Fincher’s version has grown up in the shadow of its model – an excellent work – is hard to say. Although not destined to become a modern classic, this will no doubt excite many. KRG
Real Steel (11) Dir: Shawn Levy; US action, 2011, 126 mins; Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly Real Steel has a fairly predictable plot and an ending so cheesy that you are liable to choke on it. However, you find yourself caring not only about the human characters but the robots too. All in all, Real Steel looks like the real deal. KE
The Darkest Hour (11)
The Help (7)
Dir: Chris Gorak; US horror, 2011, 89 min; Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella Like many horror movies, at the beginning everything seems hunky dory until it all turns apocalyptic. The Darkest Hour was predictable and predictably bad and will leave audiences feeling confused and frustrated. ED
Dir: Tate Taylor; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Bryce Dallas Howard Set in the ‘60s Mississippi, the film has a political backdrop, but despite pulling on the heartstrings, The Help is entertaining and enjoyable. ED

Dir: Ben Palmer; UK com, 2011, 93 mins; Simon Bird, James Buckley, Blake Harrison, Joe Thomas As with many TV to film transitions the tendency can be to adopt a more benign approach to its previous incarnation – thankfully the film retains much of its signature crudity but it does lose something by attempting to give us more. Dir. Guy Ritchie. US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. Cheyenne (Penn) is a retired rock musician. After receiving word of his father’s death he promptly returns to his birthplace of New York where he learns of his father’s life quest: to track down a Nazi officer from the concentration camp where he was imprisoned. There’s an awkward sense that the jaunty visual comedy of Penn as an ageing rocker belongs in a different genre than that of Nazi war camps. Yes, they form a coherent whole that is both entertaining and superficially engaging, but the problem lies in the lack of sincerity within the subjects themselves. MW
‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projected.
J. Edgar (11)
Dir: Brad Bird; US action, 2011, 133 mins; Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Vladimir Mashkov, Lea Seydoux, Michael Nyqvist You really don’t care how impossible it may be, you just want to see more.
Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts. Armie Hammer, Judi Dench Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE
The Music Never Stopped Dir: Jim Kohlberg; US drama, 105 mins; J.K. Simmons, Lou Taylor Pucci, Julia Orman This film is like a satisfying meal; it isn’t too heavy and leaves you feeling content afterwards. ED

PICK O THE W F EEK
Strictly Come Dancing - series six
spor t THE W OF EEK
BBC Entertainment, Sat 20:00
NOT EXACTLY spoilt for choice this week, although some of you will be pleased to learn that Game of Thrones is debuting on 22 February - check out our preview next week. In the meantime, we’ll have to make do with returning series of two tried and tested British oldies: Strictly Come Dancing, which is putting on its frocks and tails for the sixth time, and the conmen of comedy drama Hustle, almost unrecognisable from their first outing, now back for season seven. Strictly Come Dancing is showing no signs of dying on its feet – which is pretty much the case of any British show that involves an ever-changing cast of celebrities. Given our international readership, it’s hard to gauge who the majority will know from this season. Phil
Daniels, the lead actor in cult classic Quadrophenia, is probably your best bet, or Cherie Lunghi, Guinevere in John Boorman’s Excalibur. But series six is actually notable for two reasons. The first is broadcaster John Sergeant, the show’s worst ever contestant who is carried to the latter stages by a mischievous British public. The second is the rumba performed by Rachel Stevens. Hustle has also been incredibly popular despite undergoing more line-up stages than the percussion unit of Spinal Tap. But while the absence of Marc Warren is a blow, Adrian Lester carries the show with a level of charisma that might have taken him further in another lifetime – although he will be consoled that Warren continues to flit from one mediocre series to another.
Elsewhere, Work of Art (DR HD, Wed 18:45), which has the same format as Project Runway, is back for a welcome second season as there’s nothing better than seeing a pretentious artist being confronted for being the talentless arsehole they truly are; watch the brilliant Dickens adaptation Bleak House (DR K, Sat & Sun 13:45) and The Devil’s BBC Entertainment, Sat 20:00 Strictly Come Dancing - series six Mistress (DR K, Sat 20:00) in their entirety; Manchester United vs Liverpool (K6, Sat 13:00) is arguably English football’s fiercest fixture; and don’t forget to tune in for Sherlock: The Hounds of Baskerville (SV1, Sat 20:00), a triumphant retelling of one of the most captivating whodunits ever – which is funny because whichever way you look at it, there’s only really one suspect.
