BEN HAMILTON
THERE WON’T be a special St Patrick’s Day supplement this year, so you’ll have to make do with the preview of the events taking place a week next Saturday on G3. The truth is, we can’t be arsed (see cover and G2 for news of the bottomless supply of talent involved in this year’s Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition). There’s only so many things you can write about the Blarney Stone, Ryanair and that rugby player who looks like Uncle Fester. In recent years, we’ve done numerous A-Zs, an ‘on this day in history’, several pieces about the history of the parade, Irish food and musical instruments, not forgetting the one-offs on villains (memorably on the same page as a greeting from the Irish Embassy), sports, unsung Irishman, and different types of Irishmen. And despite doing all this, I still only managed to score one out of five when Ireland turned up as a specialist subject round at the Globe Quiz.
No, this year we’re switching our attention to St George’s Day on April 23, the patron saint of England, who in 2012 will be giving Paddy a run for his money thanks to the efforts of Martin Popplewell, the owner of the newly-opened English boozer Sankt Nikolai Restaurant and Pub on Nikolajgade in the city centre. “We’re getting a white horse,” says Popplewell. (Yeah, beat that Tourism of Ireland!) “The idea is for St George to trot through Copenhagen on a white horse, searching for the dragon to rescue the damsel in distress.” And along with the theatrics, expect some traditional English goodies like Lancashire Hot Pot, Fish & Chips, Cornish Pasties, a 15-strong all-English beer lineup, and a special St George’s Day Quiz (the answer to question one is that he was Palestinian). “Nobody ever celebrates St George’s Day, so I want to make a big thing of it.” Talking of English, our Select Shopping (see G9) this week looks at the best places in town to buy Anglophone books, although it omits the very best location: the St Albans Summer Fete in late August. Finding a good book there is as easy as finding a pint of the black stuff on St Patrick’s Day.
From now on, every time you hear Men at Work’s ‘Down Under’ you’ll think of Diego Agulló and Dmitry Paranyushkin’s The Humping Pact
Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition
Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Nyhavn 2, Cph K; ongoing, ends May 6; open TueSun 11:00-17:00, Wed 11:00-20:00; tickets: 60 kr, concessions: 40kr, under-16s and Weds after 17:00: free adm; www. kunsthalcharlottenborg.dk WITH SPRINGTIME comes love, so the saying goes, or at least sex! The annual Spring Exhibition at Charlottenborg does not disappoint in the way of sexual content, featuring a large amount of artworks with sexuality, from the intelligent to the vapid, as their focus. Red lips, naked men, gyrating dancers in scarves, and grainy YouTube videos populate this huge group exhibition - an annual tradition in the Copenhagen art world. The Spring Exhibition is one of Europe’s largest juried art shows, boasting 69 artists this year, ranging in age from 22 to 63. The largely unknown artists are from several different countries, including Russia, South Africa, France, the United States, Britain, and of course those in Scandinavia. Each year, the jurors select a winner: a best in show artwork. This year’s winner is South African artist Nkule Mabaso. Mabaso’s two pieces, Red Hot Lips (2011) and Sta-Soft-Fro “Conspicuous Individualism”
Performance The Woman without a Shadow
Store Scene, Operaen, Ekvipagemestervej 10, 1438 Cph K; performances at 18:30 on Sat; tickets 95-795kr, billet@kglteater.dk, 9816 5296; 230 mins including two intermissions; sung in German with Danish supertitles; www.kglteater.dk Richard Strauss’s opera Die Frau ohne Schatten is a convoluted, densely allegorical, psychologically vibrant quest-drama. Often compared to Mozart’s The Magic Flute, it is now widely considered Strauss’s magnum opus. It’s true you’d have to be impressively well-read to appreciate all its references. But one mustn’t sit through it like a lecture as there is no great message. KRG
(2011), explore contemporary black femininity and sexuality through artificial hair. Using herself as a model, the artist poses in the style of a pinup girl in leopard-print clothing wearing a wild, wind-swept wig and bright red lipstick. Posing in a post-apocalyptic landscape, she stares fiercely at the camera. Mabaso also displays three sculptures braided from synthetic hair. Her work is visually striking and forward-thinking in its attempt to open up a discussion about race and cultural stereotypes; however, it could benefit from a more polished presentation format. Mabaso’s artwork tries to complicate sexuality while the work of Diego Agulló and Dmitry Paranyushkin is unabashedly uncomplicated in its blatant sexuality. From Spain and Russia respectively, the artist duo showed their video and performance piece, The Humping Pact (2011). The Humping Pact features a mass of naked men simulating sex with inanimate objects in an industrial urban landscape. The artists say they are trying to build “an intimate and personal relationship with space”. At the very least, after seeing this piece, one will never feel the same about industrial waste. The Humping Pact’s pile of undulating man parts would benefit from being shown in larger format than the tiny video monitor it plays on at Charlottenborg.
Shakespeare Unplugged
Krudttønden, Serridslevvej 2, Cph Ø; ends March 24, performances at 20:00 on MonFri, 17:00 on Sat; tickets 95165kr, www.billetten.dk; 80 mins; in English; www.thattheatre.com That Theatre’s new play Shakespeare Unplugged proves that the bard is still very much alive today. Penned by the actors and director Barry McKenna, it takes place in a pub during a football match between England and Denmark. Confronted by a power cut, two fans (Ian Burns and Andre Jeffers) switch their attention to the lovelife of the barman (Adam Brix), teaching him how to woo his Rosalind in Shakespearean style, with a little help from the audience, which according to McKenna, is “a crucial element” in any Shakespeare play. MH
Living Room
However, if artistic references to large-scale manhoods are what you are after, you don’t have to go far at the Spring Exhibition. Visitors walking into the exhibition’s next room are greeted by Défense de touches (2010) by the French artist Gilles T Lacombe, a giant model of an elephant tusk hung like a phallus from the ceiling of the museum. Lacombe’s sculpture, made from over 4000 discarded piano keys, is a stunning memorial to elephants poached for their ivory tusks. A cornerstone piece in this year’s sprawling Spring Exhibition, it weaves together themes of ethnicity, cultural history, and sexuality that run throughout. Finally, in the same exhibition hall as Lacombe’s giant tusk, Finnish artist Jan Ijäs’s Sweet Mov(i)e (2011) can be seen. Sweet Mov(i)e features recycled web video footage of aficionados of bounce music, a hyper-sexualised genre of dance music that originated in the city of New Orleans and features the ‘booty bounce’ as its signature move. As an artist, Ijäs appears unaware of the original context of his source material, referring to it only as footage of people simulating sex. The Spring Exhibition is open until May 6 and visitors are able to vote for the Audience Award winner until May 2. BONNIE FORTUNE EW

St Patrick’s Day
Cph K (unless stated); Saturday March 17 (unless stated); remember, everyone’s Irish on St Patrick’s Day MARCH 17 is St Patrick’s Day - an excuse to celebrate all things Irish. But it’s more than just wearing green, drinking Guinness, and dealing with a hangover the next day - many people seriously honour the memory of the patron saint of Ireland. The Irish have observed this day as a religious holiday for over 1,000 years. On St Patrick’s Day, which nearly always falls during the christian season of Lent (it has on occasion been moved due to a clash with Holy Week), Irish families would traditionally attend church in the morning and celebrate in the afternoon. Today, people of all backgrounds celebrate St Patrick’s Day – including the Danes. Since 2004, Copenhagen has celebrated St Patrick’s Day with family-focused events in and around the city centre. The highlight of the day is the parade. Starting at Rådhuspladsen at 17:00, it moves through the streets of the city centre. After that, there are plenty of Irish pubs and bars in the city, so finding somewhere to move on to shouldn’t be a problem.

Bottled in England, but made in Nørrebro Bottled in England

T
his Nørrebro-based duo have managed to make a name for themselves over the past couple of years thanks to their reckless performances and a savage mix of drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep. So if you want a bass rave of epic dimensions, this is the perfect occasion. The band, which is comprised of Daniel Vognstrup on bass and electronics and August Dyrborg on drums, haven’t existed that long, but they have achieved quite a lot in their two years
on the national music scene. Last year, the duo played at several Danish festivals including Spot, Distortion and Roskilde, which has given them quite the reputation for gripping the audience with their mix of slow and gloomy dubstep-inspired tracks as well as their more energetic and dance-friendly, drum ‘n’ bass inspired ones. Their name, Bottled in England, comes from a mutual love of gin, and is directly inspired by the old Beefeater bottles, which bore the ‘Bottled in England’ label. The name fits, as the former British underground genres of drum ‘n’ bass and dubstep are here repackaged in a new and different way. Some might even say the band is a bit atypical in their composition of a drummer
and a bass player. This flies in the face of convention, as the other big names within the genre, like Magnetic Man, tend to use computer-generated drum beats. That Bottled in England have live drums gives their performances a very energetic vibe. The drummer, Dyrborg, is known to be tireless behind the kit, which he aggressively beats like a machine, something he learned from his drum instructor Anders Meihlhaardt, who used to play for the first Danish drum ‘n’ bass band ‘F.U.K.T.’. The other band member, Vognstrup, plays a deep wobble bass that’s sometimes combined with a few melodic lines, creating a more nuanced expression. Together they always man-
age to grip the audience with their particularly raw and vicious expression and their somewhat dirty and noisy tunes. Vognstrup is also known to stir up the audience by screaming along with the music. The audience aren’t the only ones to find the duo thrilling; critics have also been enthusiastic about the group. Music magazine Gaffa’s critic, Lene Wagner Munk-Petersen, said that “together, August Dyrborg’s intense drumming and Daniel Vognstrup’s recklessness – he appeared in wellies, green shorts and one tooth short – create a mood that makes you want to scream along, sweat along and spit along” after their performance at the Newbees Festival in Aarhus. In August 2011, the band released
their debut EP, Believe the Hype, and have now released a new video for the single ‘Change’. Check out the video if you want to get a feeling of Bottle in England’s flirtation with violence, as it shows six young people breaking things and beating each other up. It definitely gives a good impression of the vicious side of the band’s music. After the success of their first tour, they have just revealed a bunch of new performances, with the Loppen show being their second stop. So don’t miss the chance to “sweat and scream along” to this up-and-coming savage act.

Rangleklods + Reptile Youth
Lille Vega; 21:00; 120kr Releasing his debut record, Beekeeper (2012), three days later, electronic wizard Rangleklods – a Dane who cultivated his beatheavy brand of electro-pop in Berlin – will be revealing his latest material with an exciting live set-up that now includes a female guitarist. Gaining critical acclaim on the club circuit for his catchy experimental dancetune, ‘Young and Dumb’, the promise of new material will beckon Copenhagen’s young and trendy. In support are Danish beat-smiths Reptile Youth, who have a major following in Copenhagen.
Review Wilco

here’s something about Wilco’s music that is not only quintessentially American, but Midwestern. A bit surreal then for this Iowa boy to see his former Chicago ‘neighbours’ at Frederiksberg’s Falconer Salen, especially given that this was a seated concert. Once the lights dimmed, however, and Jeff Tweedy and company came out to the simple but elegant lampshade-infused stage, their music largely transcended time and place. Opening the show with the 12-minute subtle number ‘One Sunday Morning’ from 2011’s The Whole Love was a bold but effective choice for the band. The sombre theme of a conflicted relationship between father and son suited the theatre-like setting of the evening perfectly and settled the appreciative crowd deep into their seats. When it was followed by the equally

The Straits
Amager Bio; 21:00; 325kr The legendary ‘70s/‘80s ‘slow rock’ group Dire Straits – famed for iconic hits such as ‘Sultans of Swing’, ‘Money For Nothing’ and ‘Brothers In Arms’ – disbanded in the mid-‘90s. To meet the substantial demand for a comeback, the former members of Dire Straits – minus head honcho Mark Knopfler – have teamed up with other veteran musicians to return to the stage and perform old classics such as those listed above. On the receiving end of favourable reviews for their recent show in Odense, this is a night of nostalgia for classic rock fans.
down-trodden ‘Poor Places’, one was almost lulled into the sense that this was going to be one very low-key evening. Luckily, all of that changed when the band tore into the lush and experimental ‘Art of Almost’ followed by the poppy, up-beat ‘I Might’ – the opening one-two combo off The Whole Love. The pace and energy continued to build during unexpected highlight ‘Bull Black Nova’, an inspired version of ‘Spiders (Kidsmoke)’ and a romping ‘Impossible Germany’ that included a scene-stealing shredding guitar solo from Nels Cline. The easy-going vibe of the concert’s opening was firmly put to bed, but the weirdness would live on. A few songs on, a man in the audience – perhaps put off by the seated arrangement – shouted out that he wanted to dance to Wilco. “You want to dance?” the notoriously chatty Tweedy responded. “What exactly are we doing to stop you? Well, besides playing Wilco songs?” He then warned that, looking at the playlist, it wouldn’t be a particularly good time for danc-

Store Vega; 21:00; 350kr Led by Juan Formell, one of the most influential Cuban musicians of the Castro era, the afroCuban group have been active for more than five decades, popularising the indigenous rhythms of Cuba all over the world. Introducing what became known as the ‘songo sound’ – a lively blend of Cuban salsa and Caribbean rhythms – in the ‘70s, Formell and his band significantly altered the face of Latin music, subsequently obtaining stardom on the world music stage. Performing at Vega for the past six years at the dawn of spring, it’s become something of a tradition, and a popular one at that.

Although his polished, catchy electronic rap tunes are hardly pushing the boundaries of pop music, Example has the market sewn up and is now one of England’s biggest pop stars – a tag that will go far during his European tour.

Still Corners
Loppen; 21:00; 100kr Signed to the art-rock label SubPop – home to the likes of Avi Buffalo, Beach House and Wolf Parade – the transatlantic malefemale duo of American songwriter Greg Hughes and English vocalist Tessa Murray offer an ambient, calming and youthful brand of indie rock. Heavily inspired by cinema, Still Corners pair atmospheric instrumentation with Murray’s hollow vocal style to give rise to an emotionally powerful, albeit simple style that is fast gaining momentum on the continent. Their debut Creatures of an Hour (2011) has received the stamp of approval from several industry heavyweights.
Nightlife Balkan Beat Party
“Rock you, Copenhagen!” Wilco did just that
ing. And he was right. The concert hit a bit of a lull before being revived by the sing-along friendly ‘Jesus, Etc’ and then moving on to the strangest, most entertaining crowd interaction yet. Saying that early in the show he heard someone yell out: “F**k you, Tweedy”, Wilco’s frontman asked the audience if they were sure everything was okay. The offending concert-goer responded that he had actually shouted: “Rock you, Tweedy”, an explanation that elicited chuckles of
disbelief from the band. Tweedy then dryly responded: “Well, rock you, Copenhagen!” to roars of approval and the show then built towards a climactic performance of old favourite ‘A Shot in the Arm’ from 1999’s Summerteeth. After a short break, the band came out to play a five-song encore that succeeded in getting at least a few people out of their chairs – especially the penultimate tune ‘Heavy Metal Drummer’. Stengade; Fri 22:00; 100kr The Balkan gypsy-rock genre has become a phenomenon of late, popularised by Gogol Bordello and a number of underground DJs who have turned the rhythmic sounds of the eastern bloc upside down and inside out. Tonight’s crew, led by a hub of Scandinavian DJs including Megafon, Danjal and DJ Gulliver, have got their hands on the rustic, traditional folk tunes of Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia and contorted the songs into rough and ready mixes that get your feet moving. Stengade is one of the lesser known venues in Copenhagen and admittedly a little run down, but it’s an intrinsic part of Copenhagen’s underground scene.

The Chocolate Association has put together this special occasion for all chocolate lovers and enthusiasts, which will be held at TAP1, in the middle of Carlsberg central and will be housing more than 40 chocolate exhibitors for two exciting days to take you on a chocolaty ride. Whether you know your chocolate or not, it will be an experience not to be missed – get to enjoy chocolate tastings and even a chocolate massage, be enlightened about the history of chocolate, how it’s made and the benefits of consuming it. Chocolatiers, almost a century old like the well-known Anthon Berg, Peter Beier Chokolade and Frederiksberg Chokolade, as well as Summerbird and many more, will be part of this sinfullychocolaty event. From being consumed as a bitter beverage dating back 1500 years ago, chocolate has come a long way, so

head on down to the Chokoladeselskabet section for a demonstration of how chocolate is made. Nikolaos Strangas, the owner of Conditori & Cakeaway, Swiss chocolatier Pascal Beschle, and Damian Allsop, the owner of a chocolate shop and chocolate school will be in the demonstration kitchen at the festival for a more hands-on learning experience. On Sunday, there will be an annual awards ceremony at 13:00 to honour chocolatiers for their creative and brilliant creations in the chocolate world. If you want to learn more and into detail about chocolates, Jesper Møller, the director of the Toms group, the largest chocolate company in Denmark, and health expert Umahro Cadogan will enlighten visitors on everything about chocolates and the advantages of consuming it, while several other guest speakers who will be there to answer your burning questions. Chocolate massages are available to be enjoyed by visitors. Using chocolate in massages instead of aromatic oils is slowly
but surely becoming popular. But while there might not be sufficient evidence that chocolate can improve your skin when externally applied, studies have shown that it can lower your blood pressure - so chocolate is a sinful indulgence that has health benefits too! Only if you eat it in moderation, of course. To make your trip to the Chocolate Festival interesting, it could be handy to know a tip or two on how to appreciate chocolate, so here are some tips from the chief chocolatier at Godiva, Thierry Muret: Allow the piece of chocolate to melt against the roof of your mouth. Roll the chocolate on your tongue, allowing the aroma and taste to permeate your mouth, and feel the smooth and fine texture … But that’s not all there is to appreciating chocolates - if you want to find out more, head on down to the Chocolate Festival! I THOUGHT I would try a recipe for banana-walnut muffins. Although muffins are considered a fairly typical morning food in America, I know many Danes who would call it a cake. Quite frankly, it’s a relatively accurate title. This is not the healthiest of breakfast items, but it sure is delicious. The key to making quality muffins is to keep the dry and wet ingredients separate until the last possible moment. When mixing the two together, it is important to mix until just combined. If you mix the batter too much, the muffins will come out heavy. Most people prefer light and moist to bricks. This recipe is also great for
using up bananas that become too ripe but are still edible (aka bruised or brown). Usually noone wants to eat one, but bananas do get sweeter when they ripen. It’s also easier to mash browned bananas and results in a wetter, thinner batter - which makes more muffins, though your mileage will vary. You can make a batch during the weekend and have something quick and easy to grab for breakfast on the way out in the morning. They refrigerate well and the individual sizing of muffins makes for a great midday snack as well. Or if you ultimately think these muffins are more like a cake, you can always eat one for dessert!

Tucked away behind a hard-to-find door on the first floor to the right of a typical Copenhagen apartment, the restaurant is based around the concept of the dinner party with guests stepping into what appears to be a private apartment and then being utterly spoilt by their hosts. The monthly set menu costs 1,250kr and has a whopping ten courses, and you can tell them in advance of any food quirks you might have and they will personalise the menu for you. the melted butter. Fold the liquid mixture into the flour mixture until everything is moist. Be careful not to over-mix. Scoop out the batter into the muffin pan. The recipe should provide for 12 large sized muffins or 48 mini-muffins (though I’m not entirely sure where you can buy pans for those). I actually fill the liners prior to putting them into the pan. In my case, I really stuffed the 12 muffin liners in order to use up all of the batter because I have a strangely shaped, but incredibly cheap, muffin pan. It causes my muffins to take on a very mushroom-like appearance. But hey, the muffin top is the best part, right? Bake in the preheated oven. If you are baking mini-muffins, bake for 10 to 15 minutes. For regular sized muffins, bake for between 25 and 30 minutes. When the muffins are done, they should spring back when lightly prodded.

Saxo Cafe Colbjørnsensgade 11, 1652 Cph V; open 11:00-23:00; 3888 8288, www.saxocafe.dk; Chinese buffet 128kr pp, dim sum dishes from 35kr Saxo’s menu is an eclectic and comforting mix of cultures, incorporating Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese buffets, Dim Sum and Vietnamese menus, and traditional Danish fare. With such a wide choice, it’s a great place to go as a group who can’t agree on a choice of cuisine. On our visit our favourites were the Dim Sums - particularly the steamed pork dumplings that are perfectly fluffy. AK Gold Prag Gothersgade 39, 1123 Cph K; open Tue-Wed 17:00-23:30; Thu-Sat 17:00-24:00; SunMon closed; appetisers from 19Kr, mains from 89kr; 3391 4712, www.goldprag.dk Gold Prag has a distinct Austrian, Hungarian, Czech and Polish heritage and lives in a time of its own. The main courses are substantial, honestly cooked and rich in taste and include Vienna schnitzel with baked new potatoes and coleslaw and chicken breast topped with apricots and cheese. There are also dumplings cooked in the Austrian way and delicious goulash among the many different servings to be had. All in all it is a rough and tumble sort of place that is elegantly primitive with charisma, heartiness and austerely excellent food that perfectly accompanies classic beers and wine. Pubs The Irish Rover Strøget 46, 1161 Cph K; Open daily 10:00-late; www. irishrover.dk You won’t find a more childfriendly pub in the whole city. From the fish and chip expat family nights at 17:00 on the last Friday of every month, to enjoying the Sunday roast (lamb, all the trimmings, just 99kr, kids portion for 58kr), they are always welcome. There’s live music Thursday-Sunday (22:00-late), the kitchen is open from 10:00 until late every day - serving a burger meal with pint for just 120kr - the pub caters to all sports fans, there’s a pool table in their back room where you can smoke, and upstairs there’s a new lounge area, which is the perfect place to relax with a view over Strøget. BH Brew Pub Vestergade 29, 1456 Cph K; restaurant open Mon-Sat 12:00-22:00, pub open MonThu 12:00-24:00, Fri-Sat 12:00-02:00, Sun closed; 3332 0060; three-course lunch menu 155kr; www.brewpub. dk The menu is full of hearty, homely, yet inventive dishes featuring inspired use of the same wonderful ingredients that go into the brewing process. Each dish can be easily matched by one of Brew Pub’s own concoctions from the casks across the courtyard. AK Kennedy’s Irish Bar Gammel Kongevej 23, 1610 Cph V; Open Mon-Sun 12:0002:00 It’s not an Irish pub. Instead it’s a pub owned by Irishmen, and there’s a big difference. It’s an authentic taste of what the Emerald Isle was like in the 1980s in a pub totally devoid of concepts, themes, and DIY Irish pub kits. Drop by at 17:00 on Fridays for the traditional Irish music sessions which are rapidly gaining in popularity. BH
Southern Cross Løngangstræde 37, Cph K; open Sun-Thu 15:00-03:00, Sat-Sun 12:00-05:00; 3311 0939 This Aussie boozer is a mecca for expats and Danes, old and young, that has a lively darts board, a fortnightly quiz, a good sports-viewing atmosphere, and a happy hour that lasts to 8pm during which you can buy beers for just 30kr. JHW The Dubliner Amagertorv 5, Strøget, 1160 Cph K; Opening Hours: Mon-Sun 10:00-late This pub is never quiet. It’s the perfect place for sports fans to mingle, or for live music which it provides every day. It also serves food all day from 10am to 10pm, and diners can find peace from the music and sport on a table overlooking the walking street, or on the first floor balcony overlooking Amagertorv. BH The Globe Nørregade 43-45, 1165 Cph K; Opening hours vary, until 03:00 Fri-Sat Friendly service and good value food make this the perfect city pub, and it’s difficult to know where to enjoy your pint given the number of options. If it’s company you want, you might try the main bar, or a private function, the second bar; seating-wise pull up a high chair, relax on cushioned benches or lord it as a bishop for the evening; or go genteel in the library - a great place to cheat in the fortnightly quiz, the longest running in the city. BH The Old English Pub Vesterbrogade 2B, 1620 Cph V; Open Sun-Thu 11:30-02:30, Fri-Sat 11:30-04:30; 3332 1921; www.oldenglishpub.dk This Victorian style English pub has all the class and authenticity of a Cotswolds country pub not a Costa del Sol flea trap. Facing Tivoli’s arches and just a stone’s throw from Strøget, it’s the ideal pit-stop on a tour of the city centre. LB

Will appeal to everyone - apples and oranges even THE FIRST THING that strikes you as you enter Restaurant Orangeriet is the natural light. This little rectangular building, tucked just inside the border of Kongens Have, has three walls lined with gloriously large windows that both provide views of of the city’s prettiest parks and allow gigantic amounts of daylight to fall on the herringbone wooden floors and crisp white tables. The studied simplicity of the interiors is the next thing you notice. Oh so very Danish and oh so very stylish, there are Eames DSR Eiffel chairs set beside small square tables on which ferociously starched tableclothes are laid over a softer, muted grey underlay, while the Royal Copenhagen crockery and green-tinted glasses pick up on the hues of the olive and orange trees that soar into the airspace. Orangeriet was founded two years ago by the chef Jasper Kure and his partner Marie. They met at Krog’s fish restaurant - just one of many top-notch restaurants (including Prémisse, now AOC, and Brøndums Hotel in Skagen) that Jasper has worked at. Here the ambition is more modest, simply to create a relaxed restaurant serving fantastic seasonal dishes at reasonable prices. Somewhere you could pop in for cake and a coffee while walking the dog, or equally meet some friends for a long gossipy meal without fretting over the prices. And they have done just that. On the Wednesday that we visit, the room has a mellow buzz. There are a few couples romancing, older ladies laughing, a group of men who appeared to be taking the wine list more seriously than their business, and us, spoilt by the choice on the menu. The obvious move at lunchtime is to opt for one of the open sandwiches, the smørrebrød. Priced between 70 and 75 kroner, these include classics such as Roast beef, grated horseradish, roasted onions and pickles and more adventurous offerings such as Fano smoked salmon and applecelery remoulade. To start we try the Fried herring with red onion, dill and capers. Piled high with delicately flavoured herring and capers that had escaped the fate of their brine-soaked, overly salted cousins, it was a delight. For a light lunch this and perhaps a dessert would suffice. But alas, the restaurant reviewer has the perfect excuse to be a glutton so we pile in to the mains. Today we’re seduced by the a la carte options of Baked goat’s cheese salad and Steamed mussels with fennel flakes, but there is also a daily three-course set menu on offer for 245 kroner. Again our plates arrive arranged to pristine perfection, but it’s the portion size that makes us gasp. These are
Bathed in copious amounts of natural light, the interior is a paradigm of studied simplicity
very generous portions, which considering they only cost 135kr, the same price as a sandwich in some of Copenhagen’s tourist traps, is an absolute bargain. They’re tasty to boot. The salad peppered with pickled walnuts and succulent raisins was simple, but done well. The mussels - with their rich, herby, buttery sauce and thin linguine-like strips of fennel - were a fantastic derivation of the ubiquitous garlic and white wine dish. We sip on glasses of fruity and slightly sweet Riesling from the Mosel region, a mid-range choice from an extensive wine list that covers most of Europe, Australasia and the US.
Can we fit in a pudding? It would seem rude not to seeing as this building was originally a konditori providing sweet treats to Copenhagen’s finest. The Braised pineapple with rum and vanilla, caramel, coconut ice cream and raw liquorice sounds amazing, but instead we opt for the Petit fours and coffee. They arrive at the table in a pretty floral tin and when we pop open the lid we squeal with delight at the six beautifully crafted delicacies within. Salty peanuts clustered together with white chocolate, a mini slice of marzipan cake, a truffle bursting with dolce de leche, mini brownies, walnut
fudge and cool coconut cream encased by dark chocolate. We finished them all. Gulp. Three hours after we entered the restaurant we leave having filled our bellies with simple, fresh food cooked and presented exceptionally well. This really is a fantastic option for lunch, even more so from May 1 when tables will spill out into the park. Or you can book for dinner, when more hearty dishes appear on the menu. On Sunday there’s an extended cake menu too - perfect after an appetite-inducing stroll in the park.

Project X (15)
Dir: Nima Nourizadeh; US comedy, 2012, 88 mins; Thomas Mann, Oliver Cooper, Jonathan Daniel Brown

T
HE PROVERBIAL cats are away and these mice intend to party hard. Thomas’s parents have foolishly left their teenage son at the helm of their home for his birthday weekend. Initially reluctant to turn the organisational reins over to his loud-mouthed friend Costa, Thomas questions whether they’re popular enough to fill a room, let alone hold a house party. Costa hires some neighbourhood kids to do the security, a mysterious schoolmate to film the entire event, and promptly sets about marketing the evening by blitzing messages to everyone with a mobile: “Ugly bitches, stay home.” And so the stage is set for the most debauched, apocalyptic, drug addled, booze-fuelled event that ever spilled onto the sleepy streets of suburban Pasadena. Turns out they needn’t have worried about numbers. The scope of the party is something to behold. What begins as three nerds hoping for close encounters with females of the species culminates in flame throwers and SAS commando units. Refreshingly, these youth are able to trash things, take ecstasy and steal with relatively few consequences. I say refreshingly because you’d expect most films from a major studio to feature misplaced morals. Here there are none. In the grand sweep of things, the film succeeds in depicting a happening of breathtaking scale. Technically too, many shots are long unbroken takes that
“This is the blood of Christ,” although he probably would have passed on saving the sin that is Project X not only required careful choreography (particularly the action sequences), but special consideration to lighting. Unsurprisingly for a house party, the music is wall-to-wall and mixed loud, providing a full-blooded counterpoint to an all too anaemic narrative. There are diverse contributions from an impressive list of names, from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Metallica to Kanye West and Eminem. In fact, it seems a good portion of the budget must have been spent on the soundtrack. Beyond that though, the film fails on every level. It’s the smaller details that be-

tray the film’s lack of worth. The film is presented as a found footage/fly on the wall doc, and despite being comedy, some adherence to the form is expected. Early on in the film, Thomas’s parents are unknowingly filmed as they discuss their son’s prospects in private. When his dad dismisses his only child as “a loser”, without any protest from Thomas’s mother, any believability the film might have earned thus far, collapses. Such a moment might work in an absurdist comedic context but here it undermines the documentary form of the film. Of course, the film,

There’s also a predictable ‘true love under your nose’ subplot (amid borderline misogynistic objectifying) that borrows heavily from more likeable John Hughes ‘80s fare (Some Kind Of Wonderful, Ferris Buellers Day Off). Sound like a potential guilty pleasure? If only it was half as fun to watch as it must have been to make. At 88 minutes, the film manages to outstay its welcome, playing like an overlong episode of The Inbetweeners with 100 times the budget and none of the charm. It’s big, loud and pointless. It’s probably going to be massive.
Has its moments but no cartwheels Dir: Andrew Stanton; US sci-fi, 2012, 132 mins; Taylor Kitsch Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton
‘Guilty’ – Film of the Month 8-18 March: “a gripping account of the travails of a family man caught in a quagmire of false testimonies and legal blunders in this sensational true story of French jurisprudence gone astray.” – Hollywood Reporter
helmed by first-timer Nima Nourizadeh and produced by The Hangover director Todd Phillips, is intended to be funny - laughs are supposed to come via observed moments ‘caught’ on camera. During the whole running time, I laughed twice. Project X is derivative of many better examples of the genre such as American Pie (1999), Porky’s (1982) or Weird Science (1985). As such, there are clichés abound, including the obligatory ‘you just trashed my dad’s car’ scene and the ‘nerds earn respect’ resolution (come on, how else could it end?).
T
WO TYPES of people will be mainly interested in John Carter: fans of the original 1912 Edgar Rice Burroughs book series, and fans of fantasy/sci-fi in general. Whereas book fans might find the long overdue adaptation
fantastic and nostalgic, the average viewer will feel a bit disappointed by the predictable plot and cardboard characters. It’s basically the Prince of Persia film on Mars. It’s a universal story and Burroughs’ books were among the first ones to explore it. But it has inspired so many directors since (Spielberg, Cameron), that Andrew Stanton (Finding Nemo, Toy Story) just didn’t have enough space to create something different in his live-action debut. The story follows John Carter (Kitsch), as he is transported to Mars. It has life, civilisation and lesser gravity, enabling him to perform feats of an acrobatic nature. He’s captured by green,
four-armed creatures, gets entangled in a war between two nations by rescuing a princess (Collins) and interferes in the plans of fate itself. We see the planet, as John travels from one place to another, making up his mind about whether to stay and help or leave. The casting was impressive. It’s always a pleasure to see Ciarán Hinds, James Purefoy and Mark Strong act, even in tiny roles. And Willem Defoe as a green Martian king was hilarious. The special effects were realistic, but a bit boring. Mars (Barsoom, as the natives called it) was depicted as a withered, dying planet - it looked like the Grand Canyon’s landscape:
red and dusty. Sometimes, however, the action scenes were too chaotic - it was difficult to follow the characters’ movements. Supposed to create a feel of thrill and dynamism, it merely ended up being confusing. The creatures and skyships were gorgeous though. John Carter is enjoyable, but not memorable. Somehow it feels that Disney should stick to what Disney does best - animations - and leave liveaction films to others. But if you don’t mind formulaic plot devices and only crave a bit of light-hearted entertainment, it’s a pleasant enough way to spend two hours. DIANA CERENIEWICZ

New this Week
Avoid like the Plague
Shame (15)
The Devil Inside (15)
Dir: Steve McQueen; UK drama, 2011, 101 mins; Michael Fassbender, Carey Mulligan Simple but not simplistic, McQueen explores what happens when a man’s sexual addiction distracts him enough to delay responding to a cry for help from his sister. MH
Dir: William Brent Bell; US horror, 2012, 87 mins; Fernanda Andrade, Simon Quarterman, Evan Helmuth A woman becomes involved in a series of unauthorised exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, who allegedly murdered three people during her exorcism. It’s a tired take on an old formula that loses steam even before its atrocious ending. MH
La Guerre est Déclarée Dir: Valérie Donzelli; Fra drama, 2011, 100 mins; Valérie Donzelli, Jérémie Elkaïm It sounds like a crazy risk: to make a film about a young couple whose baby is diagnosed as suffering from a brain tumour - and to make it funny and romantic, with musical interludes, so that it plays like something Jacques Demy and Francois Truffaut might have cooked up together. But actordirector Valerie Donzelli’s second film is a joy to watch. MH
This Means War (11) Dir: McG; US com, 2012, 98 mins; Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, Tom Hardy, Til Schweiger This Means War is about two spies who are close friends, and how they compete over the same girl. Directed by McG, this film shifts with random bursts of energy. The script is mediocre, and the settings are off. The only pleasure comes from Bane and Captain Kirk fighting over Legally Blonde. MH
Attack the Block (3)
Book Your Tickets Drive (15) Dir: Nicolas Winding Refn; US thriller, 2011, 95 mins; Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan Extraordinary tension ignited by brief outbursts of violence. Sheer brilliance! KE
Dir: Joe Cornish; UK sci-fi action, 2011, 88 mins; Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard The characterisations are thinly developed, leaving it up to the actors themselves to fill in the gaps. Unfortunately for Attack the Block, the faceless, hairy, and black as night aliens often have more personality than the human actors. Not even Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Paul) can fix the damage. KE
Also Playing Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (11) Dir: Mark Neveldine & Brian Taylor; US action, 2012, 95 mins; Nicolas Cage, Idris Elba, Ciarán Hinds, Christopher Lambert It’s almost as bad as the first movie and not nearly as fun to ridicule. And in retrospect, that makes it feel like an even bigger failure. MH
J. Edgar (11) Dir: Clint Eastwood; US drama, 2011, 137 mins; Leonardo DiCaprio, Naomi Watts, Armie Hammer, Judi Dench; playing on Mon in Grand Teatret Even 137 minutes isn’t nearly enough to encompass roughly 50 years of one of the most interesting figures of the 20th century. At the same time, 137 minutes is much too long for a film that never digs deep enough to uncover anything profound. KE
Mission: Impossible - The Artist (3) Ghost Protocol (15)
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (11)
Dir: Brad Bird; US action, 2011, 133 mins; Tom Cruise, Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Vladimir Mashkov, Lea Seydoux, Michael Nyqvist You really don’t care how impossible it may be, you just want to see more. KE
Dir: Guy Ritchie; US action, 2011, 129 mins; Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law, Noomi Rapace Ritchie gives you what you expect here - lots of action, fight scenes and raw adrenaline chopped up and slowed down depending upon his mood on the day he was editing. There isn’t anything to really bring it all together though, but you’ll still have fun with this one. KE
My Week With Marilyn (3) Dir: Simon Curtis; US drama, 2011, 99 mins; Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh It is rather difficult to portray an actress whose image is still so ‘alive’. Williams captures the innocence, flirtation and insecurity of Monroe very well, delivering a complex performance. However, Williams never seems to fully exude the sexuality of Monroe. That was the message of this film, that Monroe was different in real life than her worldwide image. Nevertheless, Williams lacks the natural sexuality that Monroe always projeced. ED
Tinker Tailor Soldier Extremely Loud and Spy (11) Incredibly Close (11) Dir: Tomas Alfredson; UK/Fra/ Ger thriller, 2011, 127 mins; Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Kathy Burke, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hardy Atmospheric and stylish yes, but this has to be the most un-thrilling thriller of recent memory. MW
G19
Dir: Stephen Daldry; US drama, 2011, 129 mins; Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn If you’re a moviegoer who enjoys having your heartstring plucked like a bluegrass banjo, this is the king of movie you will be gushing over this while drinking double mocha non-fat cappuccinos with your friends. KE
Dir: Michel Hazanavicius; Fra/Bel dramedy, 2011, 100 mins; Jean Dujardin, Bernice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell It’s difficult to see why this film is being championed so highly. Many will defend it by claiming that detractors are put off by a lack of colour, dialogue, explosions and other contemporary mainstays. But really their efforts would be better spent lauding Chaplin’s Modern Times or Murnau’s Sunrise. MW
The Descendants (7) Dir: Alexander Payne; US dramedy, 2011, 115 mins; Geore Clooney, Shailene Woodley, Amara Miller Despite the nominations, Clooney delivers a performance we’ve seen many times before. LD
The Iron Lady (3) Dir: Phyllida Lloyed; UK/Fra drama, 2012, 105 mins; Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Olivia Colman, Richard E Grant From the first frame there’s a growing awareness that our perceptions of this woman are being gently and skilfully manipulated by director Phyllida Lloyd and screenwriter Abi Morgan, so much so that regardless of your political persuasion you’d have to be resolutely stubborn or emotionally retarded in failing to be moved by this biopic. Nevertheless, Margaret Thatcher is full blooded; she lives and breathes before your eyes. This film belongs entirely to Streep. MW
The Woman in Black (15) Dir: James Watkins; UK/Can/ Swe horror, 2012, 95 mins; Daniel Radcliffe, Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer Radcliff is taking the scare level up a notch from the Harry Potter movies with this British ghost story, where he plays a young lawyer, who travels to a remote village and discovers a vengeful ghost. Horror movie enthusiasts might not find this to be the scariest of scary movies, but if you have a less thickskinned significant other this is the movie to watch. MØ
Safe House (15) Dir: Daniel Espinosa; US action, 2012, 117 mins; Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds If you’re a fan of good, dynamic directing, Washington’s darker, more menacing characters, and Reynold’s bruised face, you will like Safe House. DC

NEW TV DRAMA Alcatraz doesn’t have much to lose. After all, nothing could be as bad as The Rock again. Throw a creator of Lost into the mix and we’ve got a time-travel/ mystery/crime series starring Sam Neil and Parminder Nagra (ER, Bend it like Beckham) in which 50 inmates and guards from the 1962 prison start turning up in modernday San Francisco, complete with obligatory back-stories and surreal moments that end with either “But, that’s impossible” or “That would make you 117 years old.” While Newsday liked its “weird, fun, trippy” vibes, Entertainment Weekly felt it lacked “humour and suspense but could morph into something interesting”. Time, though, questioned the point: “There’s a coldness and no sense that
these are characters I want to invest in and spend time getting to know.” The same can’t be said of Sailor Ripley. No! Not Alien, but David Lynch’s most fun outing, which is revisited in Once Upon A Time: Wild at Heart (DRK, Tue 22:15). From fairy tales to dairy tails and The Private Life of Cows, which seeks to answer all those burning questions you’ve ever had, like what does Moo mean and why do they keep on shouting it? The Guardian felt it quickly “became apparent that cows don’t really have a private life”. The programme concludes: “So we may be using the cows, but you could equally say they are using us.” The Guardian begged to differ: “I don’t remember seeing any humans getting artificially inseminated or being sent off to the abattoir.”
Elsewhere, one year on from the Japanese tsunami, the horrors are recalled in Fast Track: Japan (BBC World, Sat 19:30) and Children of the Tsunami (DR2, Sun 19:00 & SV2, Sun 22:00); give a wide berth to Extraordinary Women: Audrey Hepburn (DRK, Thu 21:00) because this series is clueless; the engaging K5, Sun 22:10 Alcatraz Seven Wonders of the Industrial World (DRK, Mon 19:05) charts the constructions of the Panama Canal and the London sewage system; and the 2012 Brit Awards (DR HD, Sat 21:00) includes an extremely miffed Adele getting interrupted five seconds into her acceptance speech, offering proof that nobody takes her generation more seriously than they do.
